#62 part 1
Ferit is petrified at grandpa’s door. He knocks and is called in. Halis stands with his back turned to Ferit and asks him to sit. Halis begins, my DIL was just sitting where you are, and we spoke. Ferit tries to speak, and Grandpa tells him to shut up. Why did you bring this girl to the house? I told you, Ferit replies, she needed help, you saw those men.
Halis asks, why did you bring her into your room? What is she to you, Ferit? Ferit begins to cry. Don’t cry, Halis responds, be a man. If you made a mistake, answer like a man! If you want to see your family and me in this house again, don’t you dare lie to me. Don’t you dare lie to me! Answer!
Ferit tearfully explains, when I married Seyran, Pelin was my girlfriend. Our relationship didn’t end immediately, but it eventually ended. And after it ended, she hooked onto some jerk. I treated this girl badly… It was a sin. I didn’t want to be cursed with this. I didn’t want her to ruin her life with this man, all because of me. I just wanted to help.
Halis asks, did your parents know you had a girlfriend when you married? Ferit nods yes. Halis asks, why didn’t you come and tell me, “Grandpa, I have a girlfriend, I love her, I want to marry her”. Why did you stay quiet?
No one asked me if I wanted to get married, Ferit replies, they only said, “you’ll get married. Your grandfather will find you a suitable girl from Antep and you will sit and be silent.” Ifakat Yenge said the topic was closed. What could I do? You said so and Mom, Dad, Yenge, they all agreed. I did what they told me. Grandpa, if you’d only asked me… if you asked me if I wanted to get married, I would have told you I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to marry anyone, but you didn’t ask me.
So now it’s my fault, right? Halis says, maybe you should ask yourself how it came to this. Have you ever once asked yourself that? Ferit wipes his eyes with a tissue. Halis shouts at him to get out. Go, so I don’t have to see you! Ferit leaves.
Ferit goes to see Suna. She immediately asks about Seyran. What happened? Where is she? Is she okay? I should be asking you, Ferit replies, you know your sister better. How is it possible for her to go so crazy?
I’m sorry, Suna says, but Seyran has endured a lot with you. Ferit seems surprised. She’s endured a lot? From me? [I guess he thinks he’s the one who’s endured.] Am I that hard to bear? I don’t understand. Suna is frustrated. Ferit! You are a fool! I swear, a complete idiot! Why do you think she did all this? I don’t know, he answers, that’s why I’m asking. I don’t recognize her anymore. I can’t understand her behavior. What’s happening to her?
Suna takes a breath. Seyran loves you as much as you love her, stupid. She pokes him in the head. Stunned Ferit asks, what? Who told you that? Was it Seyran? No, Suna replies, but actions speak louder than words. Ferit starts smiling. Suna explains, what my sister did was declare her love, understand? I know my sister well. She could have left, but she didn’t. Why? Because what she did was defend you and your marriage. Why else would someone do that? Don’t you see?
Ferit is giddy. Suna gives him a little kick—don’t laugh, stupid. You know what’s happening and why. Ferit can’t stop laughing with glee. Suna wants to know where Seyran is. He answers dreamily, Suna… Seyran is okay… she’s okay… you are incredible, baldiz (sister-in-law). I left her alone in the room to calm down a bit. Hell is about to be unleashed tonight. I don’t want to make it worse. You won’t ruin it, Suna says. Ferit jumps up. Well then, I’m going. Çak! Ferit slaps Suna high five, multiple times. Don’t forget what I just told you, she says, think about it.
#62 part 2
Orhan and Fuat return to the yali. Asuman meets them outside. She tells them that everything is okay for now. Seyran spoke to grandpa and after what she said all hell broke loose. And she chased the girl Ferit brought to the house, out of here. Orhan thinks the apocalypse is coming.
Seyran is out on the balcony looking out over the water. Ferit is watching her from inside. We see Orhan and Gulgun together. Ifakat looks at them and goes to her room to cry. Abidin looks at a message from Suna: “As you suggested, I won't be coming down for dinner this evening. I'll be in my room. Thank you for the heads-up.” Abidin smiles. Everyone heads to the dinner table to wait for Halis to bring the mansion down on their heads.

Halis begins, as is written in the Quran, verse 135 of Surah An-Nisa, the following: “Have integrity when you present as a witness of Allah, including against your parents, your relatives, even yourselves. You must defend justice scrupulously. Be they rich or poor, those you testify against, you must not forget, Allah is as close to them as he is to you. You must not follow your desires and deviate from justice. If you distort your testimony, commit false testimony, or avoid testifying, know that whatever happens, Allah knows certainly what you have done.”
Halis continues, you were scared of my power and wealth, and that’s why you lied to me. What good did it do? Becoming liars in front of Allah. How petty and insignificant are all these things you’ve been planning between yourselves. Do you think that Allah does not know what is truly inside your hearts? The punishments I could give you and all my yelling don’t have one iota of value compared to the punishments Allah himself will hand down. [cue the thunder from the storm outside.]
I am ashamed to see what you’ve become in front of my own eyes, Halis says. Have you ever looked in a mirror? Don’t you feel ashamed? Today, at this advanced age, I’ve discovered that my family is made up of a band of liars. While I was waiting peacefully for my time to walk with Allah, an immense fire burned within me. After this, how can I believe your words? How can I rest my head on my pillow? How can I close my eyes when my life is done? Didn’t you feel ashamed of telling those despicable lies? [Did I detect a slight nod from Seyran here?]
Halis isn’t done yet. Haven’t I given all of you the chance to choose the right thing? Orhan tries to interject and Halis slams the table. Silence! I took you and your son and stood you at the head of the company! As if you were truly a worthy son of mine. If I can’t trust you, who can I trust, Orhan? How many times have I told you to sort out the order in this house? You’re a coward, but the son next to you (Fuat) is an even greater coward.
And if the Korhanlar hadn’t heard enough, Halis says, today you have made me wish my family bloodline would disappear forever. [ha, does that mean Seyran doesn’t have to reproduce?] He calls Gulgun out—look at me. You call me “father”, my beautiful, graceful DIL. Have you ever asked yourself why you’re not the lady of this house after giving me two grandsons? It’s because you are selfish. You only think about yourself and your sons. And that’s what caused the most harm. You can’t hide your jealousy even with a smile.
#62 part 3
Halis takes a sip of water. [I imagine he really needed it after all this.] Ifakat! When you came to this house as a DIL, you were a poor, ignorant girl. Now look at you. I thought you were the only thing left in memory of my son. And despite my DIL, who gave me two grandchildren, I made you the lady of this house. I trusted you to run my house. And you, so not to bother yourself and not reveal all the problems here, decided to hide all the dirty things that happened from me. [ah, there’s one more left to be discovered!] All for your comfort! I thought you were the lady of the house all this time, but it turns out you are a pathetic woman who only thinks of herself!
Halis delivers the blow. From now on, there will be new rules for all of you. First, the person in charge of this whole house will be Latif. That’s a shocker, or maybe not. [look at the staff. As if they thought it was bad for them before…]
Even you will tell him when you go somewhere, Halis tells Ifakat. When I’m not in this house, Latif will be my eyes and ears. If you did these things behind my back in the house, let’s see what you’ve been doing at work. I want everyone to know and hear that Halis Ağa is not dead! He pounds the table for effect. [cue the thunder outside.] He shouts, I will go back to work and make real men out of all you useless people!
Halis rises and so do the others. He says, all these years, I’ve lived to protect my name, my honor, my customs, my traditions as the most sacred. I’ve worked. I’ve put my life into you. For what?! So someone like you, that I trusted, can come and destroy all my work?! I am ashamed! Who are you?! I ask each of you! Who do you think you are? You are just a family of unhappy insolents! [that table is taking a beating tonight.] How smart are you that you think I’m stupid? What have you earned so far? Have you even put one stone over another? If it wasn’t for me and my fortune, where do you think you’d be?! [yes, we’re looking at you, Ferit.]
Final words from Halis Ağa—now, eat all you can! You shameless leeches! Halis and Latif leave everyone with their heads hanging. Ifakat falters. Sultan rushes over to her but Ifakat puts her hand out. She orders the staff out of the room. Seyran leaves the table. Ifakat turns on Ferit. All of this is your fault! It’s your wife’s fault! Get out! I don’t want to see you and take your wife with you! Ferit leaves.
Ferit enters the bedroom. Seyran is crying. He asks, are you seriously crying? As if you aren’t the one responsible? I’m sorry for your grandfather, she replies, no one else. Look at what he must face at his age. He should deal with all of you. Are you joking, Ferit asks, who’s fault is it that grandpa is like that?
Excellent question, Seyran answers, who did all those things to your grandpa? Tell me, I’m listening. Who made me tell him everything? Sit and think about what I said, please. Take responsibility for your part in everything. You’re responsible. Don’t deny it. Ferit doesn’t answer. Seyro continues, and then I want you to think about what will happen for a second.
Ferit asks, what are you trying to say? What are you going to do? Pour gasoline and set the yali on fire? What will you do? He sits next to her on the couch. The truth is… now I’m not grandpa’s favorite. I’ve fallen from his grace. He looks at Seyran—now you’re his new favorite. I think I deserve it, she replies.
Seyran gets up and says she’s taking a shower. [is Ferit smiling at the thought? lol.] Then I’m going to sleep, she says, I need to sleep. Tomorrow will be a new day for everyone, won’t it? Seyran gets her pjs and enters the bathroom. Ferit slaps his leg, raises his hands and says, yandık… vallah… yandık (we’re burned, I swear, we’re burned).
#62 part 4
Hattuc is finally fed up with Kazim’s complaining. Why do you exaggerate? I’m getting angry, I tell you! The doctors know nothing about this, he replies, the only one who can say is the one who suffers. I know what this is. You’re tired of caring for me. Esme is annoyed at Kazim, too.
Hattuc’s phone rings. Who is calling at this hour? She asks Esme to look. It’s Halis. Esme is silent. Kazim asks, who is it? who? Esme thinks and says, uh, it’s no one. They are calling from Antep. An old friend of my aunt. She stares at Hattuc hoping she’ll catch on. Kazim gets annoyed with her “dead fish” look and accuses the women of doing something behind his back. Esme denies this. She was only worried about the call coming so late at night. He claims she’s emotionally traumatized by the thought her husband could die.
The phone keeps ringing. Hattuc gets up. Esme hands auntie the phone. Hattuc says she can’t deal with Kazim anymore. I’m going to my room. Kazim complains some more.
Hattuc answers the phone. How are you, Halis asks. Good, how are you, she replies. Today, a little girl enlightened my heart. Perhaps, I’m overwhelmed by worries. My poor heart closed itself up, but my beautiful Seyran filled it with light and gave me hope. I hope nothing bad happened, Hattuc asks, is Seyran okay?
Don’t worry, Halis answers, Seyran’s very well. Would I report bad news over the phone? Like you, Seyran is very patient and very brave. When she told me, “My aunt entrusted me to you”, there was such a light in her eyes. I remembered the trust you had in me. I felt I was back in those days.
Hattuc is emotional and so is Halis. He continues, tonight, I had to act on your trust in me, Hatice. I couldn’t take care of you, but tonight I took care of her. Since you don’t doubt my sense of justice…I want to tell you not to doubt my love… understand?
Edit: Hattuc returns to the living room. Kazim asks her what her friend wanted. Why did she call? She saw me in a dream and worried, Hattuc replies. See, Kazim says, she felt something happened to me, so she called you. Thank God we’re fine, Hattuc says, let’s go to the yali tomorrow and see how they are. What? Go to the yali, Kazim rants, what are you saying? I was shot! They must come here! Why should I go?
Hattuc snaps back, don’t make me angry! If I said we go, we go! What is with you? Thank God you’re fine. Since we became relatives, we should see each other more often. We’ll see, Kazim replies, if my leg doesn’t hurt tomorrow, I’ll call the in-law. When I call him, he doesn’t answer. [I wonder why.] I’m offended. May Allah send you reason, Hattuc says, I don’t know what else to say. Allah made me very smart, he tells her, very smart! End edit.
Seyran comes out of the bathroom. Ferit is already settled on the couch to sleep. She tells him, I’m going downstairs. I’ll sleep with my sister tonight. Ferit snarks, and if I say no, are you going to complain to grandpa? I’m not asking permission, she replies, I’m just telling you. It’s best you get used to it.
Suna is happy to see Seyran. Seyran tells her dinner was terrible and it was good that she didn’t go. Halis tore them to shreds. Suna says she heard, and she’s glad she didn’t go. What’s going to happen now? Seyran says she doesn’t know but now everyone in the house hates her. Even Gulgun Anne. Suna says, maybe they will learn not to praise their son unnecessarily. Their son is precious, but my sister isn’t? You did the right thing.
Seyran says, I never thought Halis Aga would talk to them like that. Didn’t he talk to Dad that way, Suna asks, what’s the problem if he talks to them that way? They know how he is. They’ll get over it. From now on, everyone in this house will learn to respect you. What happened with Ferit?
#62 part 5
It’s the same as usual, Seyran replies, his feelings and his behavior don’t match. When he’s sad, he laughs like a madman. And when he’s happy, he might start crying. The sisters laugh. Seyran says she still doesn’t understand him. But for the first time, it seemed he was regretful and understanding. And curiously, he didn’t seem too upset.
Suna wonders if Halis isn’t mad at him and that’s why Ferit is calm. How would you know, Seyran asks. Well, I was worried about you but I couldn't call you, Suna says, so I called Abidin. He heard everything from the kitchen and told me. Seyran asks if she can sleep with her tonight.
To Seyran’s surprise, Suna says no. After all that’s happened, you must stay in the same room with Ferit. You defended your marriage. You can’t sleep in another room now. If Halis Aga finds out, I’m sure you’ll have to explain yourself. Besides, everyone in the house is watching your every move, you must be careful. Suna tells her she can stay for a little while and then go.
Orhan and Gulgun go to their room. Orhan thinks about his father’s beratements and has a panic attack and locks up. Gulgun is frightened but she manages to calm him. He sobs, I’m so sorry… forgive me… you didn’t deserve any of those words. Neither of us deserved it, she replies, we didn’t deserve it. Or maybe we did? We ended up ruining everything. We couldn’t be parents or husband and wife. Calm down. I’m here with you, I’m here.
Slight edit. Seyran returns to the attic bedroom. Ferit is sound asleep on the couch. She covers him and then she sits in the chair and watches him. She gets up and kneels beside him. She studies his face and leans in. So close… [it reminds me of the mountain house scene they edited out. Neyse…] Seyran backs away.
Edit: Before sunrise, Latif is helping Halis get ready for the day. Halis drops his watch. Latif quickly picks it up. Halis laments, I can’t even bend over to get it. Life makes me go through this. Latif says, ağam… I can’t fault your decision, but are you sure? You left the job because of health reasons. I don’t like that you will have this stress again. Halis asks, what should I do, Latif?
Halis sits and tells Latif, no matter what I did, it didn’t work. My family betrayed me, worse than how my body betrayed me. Don’t feel sorry for them. Don’t you dare. Everyone is responsible for their own behavior. Only Seyran will get special consideration. Latif asks, are you worried she will leave?
On the contrary, Halis replies, yesterday, for the first time, I saw that she could never abandon her husband. She stood before me so boldly and defended her marriage. I felt hopeful! He smiles, for the first time since my wife’s death, I saw that she will become a worthy lady of the mansion!
Latif questions this. Halis answers—you heard right, Latif! I’ll entrust Seyran to you. You’ll educate her and take care of her. But don’t set limits. Those are my instructions. You’ll do it with or without me. But don’t transfer your power to anyone before Seyran becomes the real lady of this house. Don’t feel sorry for anyone. As you order, Latif replies.
Halis tells him to wake up Ferit. He has to come with us. He’ll start working in the business from now on. We’ll see if he can face the responsibilities. I have no doubts for Ferit Bey, Latif says, but… Halis asks, you’re referring to Orhan and Fuat, right? Latif nods.
Halis smiles, I’ve been thinking about them all day but now that I’ve chosen Seyran to be the lady of the house, I need to be sure that Ferit will be able to manage the responsibilities he’ll have. Do it. And wake everyone else up. We’ll pray the morning prayer and then go to the company.
#62 part 6
Latif knocks at Seyfer’s door. Ferit wakes, what’s happened? Seyran stirs. Latif knocks again. Ferit asks, who’s there? Latif calls out—Ferit bey? Ferit gets up. Seyran stops him from going to the door. The couch! They quickly remove the blanket and pillow, so the separate sleeping arrangement won’t be discovered.
Half asleep Ferit opens the door. Good morning, sorry to bother you, Latif says. Ağam sent me. Ferit replies, good morning? It’s still night, Latif Bey. Halis Aga has ordered you to get ready, Latif says, you’re going to work. Ferit asks, work? At the han? [where he worked with Necip.] No, Latif answers, at the company. Ferit asks, the company? With grandpa?
Seyran is standing in the background. Latif asks, Seyran Hanim, if you’d like something special for breakfast, I’ll alert the kitchen. Seyran is surprised and answers, no thank you, Latif Bey. Latif continues, you’ll go to morning prayer together. The car is being prepared, don’t be late.
Ferit sits next to Seyran on the edge of the bed. Ferit asks, did he say the company? Or did I misunderstand? Yes, he said that, Seyran replies, and he said “Seyran Hanim”, right? Yes, Ferit says, has he gone crazy? They laugh. Don’t laugh, he says, you went crazy, too. You infected him.
Seyran says, I think he was very serious. Come on, get ready, or you’ll be late. You know, you are blessed to have a grandfather like Halis Ağa. Ferit agrees. He has a question. Does this mean I have to wear a suit like my father and brother? No way. Seyran thinks, maybe not a suit. I’ll pick something for you. But you can’t go in those casual clothes.
Ferit smiles. What’s with you, Seyran? Yesterday, you went crazy with jealousy, caused a giant scandal, and now you’re picking out my clothes. She asks, what do you mean, “crazy with jealousy”? Do you think that was jealousy? He says yes. Besides, I thought you were staying with your sister last night. What happened? You came back like a cat and lay down on the bed.
[there were edits. Here’s the entire scene.] What can I do, she replies, I didn’t think I should leave you alone. He blocks her path. You’re going to keep saying you don’t love me, right? Yesterday, I brought the house down on your head, she says, do you think this is love? No, no… Ferit answers, you fell for me. I have never seen such a thing. You are crazy about me. In fact, at the airport I thought, this girl is dying for me!
Seyran places Ferit’s clothes on the bed. Don’t talk nonsense, Ferit, she says, come, try this on. I will, karıcığım, Ferit replies and he goes into seduction mode. For you, I will do anything. I’m thinking of starting with the pants. He takes off his pants. She looks at him, stoneface. I think you should start with the t-shirt, she says, I’d like to see your belly. [a fat joke.] Ferit gapes at her. Allah, Allah, he mutters and he throws his pants to the floor. What got into you? Why are you acting like this? I don’t understand.
Ferit puts pants on. Seyran asks, where is your phone? I’ll check it. Ferit points to the table—there it is, take it. You really are crazy. Seyran holds the phone up to him. From now on, there’s no password. Ferit moves in, takes her arm down, puts his hand around her waist, and pulls her in close.
They are nose to nose. Now what, he asks, what are we going to do? It almost looks like she will give in but she pushes him away. Ferit smiles.
And we are out.
Jueves Part 1 of 2 We are back to El Azufrero threatening to cut out the eyes of Miranda’s child. Miranda says she cannot believe he’s capable of killing an innocent child. Cruz pipes up that she did that to César. [I find it hard to believe Cruz bought that story from El Az.] Miranda says she’s done things she’s not proud of, but they were to protect herself and to protect Renata. El Az says she won’t ever see Renata again unless she tells them where the cache is.
Antonia and Hugo are once again interviewing Oscar. She tells him that Misael didn’t deserve to die that way. Oscar gets a faraway look on his face. He should have stayed in the apartment. Antonia asks if Oscar was there. I didn’t want it to happen. It was Tuqueque. I yelled at him not to shoot, but Misael jumped in front to protect César.
Miranda tries to negotiate with Cruz and El Az to split the Jerarca three ways. Azufrero yells that she killed his son and points his gun. Cruz stops him. Miranda wants to speak with only Cruz.
Antonia shows Oscar a photograph of Renata, the child he lived with for a while. She says that his father kidnapped her a short while ago, and it won’t be good. Does he think his father can be trusted? Look at what happened to his brother. Oscar caves and gives up the location of the warehouse where his father is hiding.
Our Team talks about the raid. Lobo doesn’t want a huge number of cops there. That might risk Renata’s life. Antonia tells Lobo she wants a Damian cool and calculating, not the impulsive one.
Miranda tells Cruz when they’re alone that she doesn’t want the money. If they cut out El Azufrero, she’ll give it all to Cruz in exchange for the freedom of Renata and also her own freedom. How can you be sure El Azufrero won’t kill you as soon as you get to the cache? We have to get away and leave him behind.
Oscar stops to speak to Leonor in her cell. He begs her forgiveness and tells her about his father ordering César’s killing.
El Az goes to speak to Renata. He grabs Tato and takes him away.
Nacho is at Santi’s place, speaking with Graciela. She tells him about Cruz kidnapping Renata. Santi asks if Nacho has any idea where they might be. He does not, but he decides to call his father.
The cops roll up on the hideout. Lobo arrives in his own vehicle. Hugo begins to speak into a bullhorn, saying that the place is surrounded. El Az wants to go down shooting. Hugo says they want them to release Renata. El Az tells the others that they need her as a shield.
Lobo insists on going in for Renata. He shouts at El Az, who shouts back and shoots. Lobo says there doesn’t have to be more bloodshed. He also asks why Cruz is protecting the man who ordered Cruz’s son killed. He wanted to separate César and Misael and ordered César killed, although he didn’t count on his own son dying as well. We see El Az look nervous. Cruz then looks at a text from Nacho telling his father just what Lobo said about how César died.
Cruz tells Placido he forgave him for sleeping with his wife, that he cheated him in business, but this…He shoots El Azufrero several times in the chest and then runs off with Miranda.
Gah! We get one more scene where El Azufrero sees Remedios and Misael in the “good place” and says that he knows he won’t be joining them. And, at last, he dies.
Somehow Cruz and Miranda get away. When Miranda screams about leaving Renata, Cruz bashes her head into the dashboard. Nacho calls and begs his father to give up. Cruz says that he loved them very much. But men like him can’t be in prison. He also wants Nacho to know that the man who killed César paid with his life.
Miranda grabs the gun, but Cruz took the bullets out and we just hear a click. As they snarl at each other, he tells Miranda (and Viewerville) that it was her idea to kill Gustavo and get their hands on the big bucks. He says she’s going to guide him to the cache, and he’s going to get someone to bring Renata. We then see him speak with the skeevy Fabio.
Renata is happy to see Fer. Then Lobo takes her into an office at the cop shop. She says she has a bad feeling, like when she found out that her parents were dead. She doesn’t want to be without a family. Lobo mentions Antonia, Graciela, and himself. He tells her that he is her father. He only found out recently from her mother. If he’d known sooner, he’d never have been separated from her. Renata says that her father died, and his name was Gustavo.
Hugo tells Antonia that Fer hacked the computers and found out how money was moved. He shows that map found with El Az’s phone. He says something about the map not making sense.
Antonia calls Ale to say that Cruz and Miranda appear to be on their way to the cache. She wants info from him about what they’ll find at the border, booby traps? He says that not even Miranda knows. He designed everything to protect her and Renata. Renata’s eyes are not the only thing needed for access. Some codes are needed, a password, to open the door for first access to the cache. Does Miranda know this? If she doesn’t have this information, Cruz might kill her. Her life is in your hands, Antonia. You have to save Miranda.
Cruz and Miranda walk toward a car he’s arranged. They have on the usual telenovela disguises, baseball caps.
Adela and Fer approach just as Renata says that Lobo is lying. He is not her father. She thinks he’s saying this so she’ll stop loving Gustavo.
Cruz brings Miranda to some hideout and says she’ll be handcuffed. They’ll go to the cache with Renata, and she’ll get 10%. He’ll get the rest. He’s offering to spare their lives.
Antonia comes to talk with Renata. Renata says that Lobo is not her father. Her father died. Antonia gently says that both things can be true. Besides the father you knew your whole life, now you have a new father. Does she only want Lobo to be her friend. Friends don’t lie, says Renata. Antonia says he didn’t speak before so as to not hurt her. She talks about the plans the three of them had. They’d get married and have a little brother for her. Renata just says she doesn’t love Lobo anymore.
Cruz tells Miranda that Antonia does things by the book. She’ll give Renata to social services. When Miranda resists this, he says that he’ll get Renata, use her eyes, and then kill her so she won’t miss her mother. How’s that sound?
