Caray, Caray!

Ahoy all, thanks for your patience in waiting for my delayed post. I discovered I'm very bad at translating business conversations, so if I have left out anything important please feel free to add or correct. I always appreciate it. Also, some of y'all's nicknames for Paula were so scathingly perfect that I had to repeat them. It felt good.



We left last night with Paula telling Ana that she is leaving to find Juan. She wants to confront him for keeping the truth from her. If her lawyer calls, tell him he can reach her on her cellular. Ana yells after her to control herself. Fat chance.

Juan remarks to Fernando (Fer) that with Cesar Luis (CL) gone they have been orphaned. He and Fer look around and see the expectant faces of all the Farell employees.

Pastor goes over the accounts with Juan. He says Juan has many important decisions to make, and by the way, how are Juan's finance studies coming along? Juan answers that Rome wasn't built in a day. Pastor asks, didn't CL go over the important decisions with Juan before he left, such as the Campeoni aquisition? Juan comments that CL dropped him like a bucket of cold water, he said nothing. Juan goes into optimist mode, pulls himself up and tells Pastor not to worry, this sort of thing is easy for him, a piece of cake.

Juanito charms Ivonne and Julia with his wide-eyed questions about his Papi's new business (Farell). Ivonne suggests he's mischievous because he got in a fight. Juanito says it was because of some girl. (I don't remember a girl, I think he's fibbing because he let himself get jumped.) Ivonne comments that he's a chip off the old block.

Pastor explains to Juan how important it was for CL to purchase Campeoni. His biggest competition in the aquisition was Don Anga. Whose side is Juan on? He said some more stuff but I didn't really understand it. Apparently my eyes glaze over at the talk of business both in English and in Spanish.

Nacho tells Yadira that Kike's proposition is the solution to their problems. Kike can have the baby while they get their finances in order; it will only be temporary. Yadi cries No No, she can't live without her baby. She sucks her thumb and pouts.

The Harpy on Jet Fuel (Paula) strides into Farell and glares at Juan. She's nice to Juanito in a perfunctory sort of way; he's polite but unimpressed. She wants to talk to Juan ALONE; they go into the Screaming Room (CL's office).

Paula lights into Juan who is all Que the hell? She blames him; he doesn't know what she's talking about. Outside the office the employees (AKA Lobby Lizards) gather outside the door to eavesdrop. Juanito scolds them, shoos them away and stands guard at the door. I fast forward through Paula's tirade. She's a shrew. Juan is confused. She insults him and calls him a hypocrite (Pharisee). "A what?" he asks. "A traitor" she yells. He still doesn't know what she's on about but he's had enough. He yells back that she's an uncontrollable hysteric, that CL didn't have the pants to confront her, is that's what's bothering her?

They argue through the commercial. Juan is stuck on the CL issue and thinks this is what's bugging his shrill princess. He reminds her that he is no longer her employee but her associate, her equal. She calls him a thief, a robber, he stabbed her in the back. He demands that she explain herself. Instead she vows that he and his friends are going to pay dearly.

Paula stomps out, arms akimbo, and runs into Pastor with some guys from Campeoni. She answers yes, she is CL's wife and therefore an owner, but if they want to talk business they'd better talk to the new boss...just be careful! She leaves and snubs Marely on her way out.

Pastor tries to scold Marely for being absent that morning but Fer runs interference and saves her. Pastor and the other two, lets call them the Brethren of the Bad Comb Overs, move on toward Juan's (CL's) office.

Fer tells Marely that none other than Juan Dominguez is in the President's office. He and Paula were sequestered and were really telling each other off. Fer adds he can tell something is bothering Marely, what's up? They are interrupted by Juanito who runs over to happily greet Marely. Ivonne gets her digs into Fer as he goes to his office.

Over at Casa Cachón Alirio tells his dear belly-friend Kike that thanks to his own big mouth Paula knows the truth about Samuel Cachón's will. Now Nidia hates him and he's going to jail.

The Brethren try to talk Campeoni business with Juan but he thought-bubbles that they make about as much sense as a poem in Japanese. Juan tells them in order to consider the probablities, possibilities, coincidences, eventualities, and incidents, he needs to be alone. After the Brethren leave he holds his head, "Chinches Bravas, dear God enlighten me!" he begs.

Instead of reviewing the Campeoni aquisition Juan wonders Que the hell was eating Paula. The only thing that's clear is that nothing at all is clear.

Pastor tells Ivonne that in regards to Farell business Juan is more lost than a rube in an insurgent (overcrowded?) metro. She hoped the company could last through the CL/Monica upheaval...but now Juan!! Pastor hopes that Juan makes the intelligent decision to leave before it's too late.

Juan decides he needs to consult someone with more business acumen than his own. He tries to call Fer on the intercom but gets Rosi first, then the warehouse. Finally he walks outside his office and whistles for Fer.

Back at Casa Cachón Alirio continues to beat himself up but Kike congratulates him on his bravery for finally telling the truth. He agrees to accompany Alirio to his appointment with Justice.

Juan uses one of CL's phallic statues as a backscratcher and tells Fer he's the only one who can help him. "Ah, the Campeoni Proposal," observes Fer, seeing the pile of binders on Juan's desk, "What's the problem?" Juan admits he doesn't know what to do.

Inside the basement "office" Pastor tells Heriberto that none other than Juan Dominguez has taken over the reins of Farell Industries. Heriberto asks is that good or bad? Pastor answers that he doesn't know, but the entire staff is terrified.

Juan tells Fer that he was talking to a person who knows a lot about the issues of market movement. "Don Anga, right?" asks Fer. No, continues Juan, this man knows about economics, history, everything, he is a licenciado of know-it-all-ology, and this gentleman alerted Juan that if a business sells itself as the last wonder of the world, one should find out why would they sell it if it's so good? (Who is this gentleman? Is he from Juan's finance TV show or book?) Fer asks does Juan think something is twisted or wrong with Campeoni? No, Juan is only suspicious that there is something suspicious. He suggests they check over the paperwork carefully before he puts his foot in it. Fer says he's up for it, but there is someone else who is very familiar with the paperwork, very intelligent, and she's right outside the door. He instructs Juan on how to call Marely on the intercom.

As Marely heads for Juan's office she and Ivonne throw insulting barbs at one another. Marely gets the last word, that Ivonne should know what it's like to be used by the boss then tossed aside. Ivonne snarls and crumples up her notepaper.

Juan tells Marely he needs her for two things. The second thing is this Campeoni paperwork. "And the first?" she asks. Juan asks does she have any idea what fly was biting Paula? She came looking for him like a panther, she insulted him with a mountain of accusations. He didn't have the remotest idea what she was talking about. Can Marely clue him in? Marely asks to speak to Juan alone.

Marely tearfully tells Juan that Delirio told Paula the truth about Samuel's will, that Nidia stole the inheritance that Samuel left for Paula. Juan is muy, pero muy impactado.

Paula goes on a tirade to Ana that Juan didn't have the pants to admit that he was the front man (!?!) in the Cachón's dirty dealings. (Oh, so now Juan is the front man? My how her pea brain does twist things!) Ana asks shouldn't they be sure before they go around flinging accusations? She (Ana) tried to call Nidia but got no answer. Paula's not surprised that the pair of them won't answer. They want to escape and Paula won't stand with crossed arms. No, she's going to destroy them. She angrily calls her lawyer and leaves an urgent message.

Marely tells Juan that Paula was the sole inheritor. She fills him in on the details. Juan is still impactado. How could Nidia be so materialistic? He says this explains much of Samuel's last day. Marely agrees that her father must have been trying to compensate for not giving Paula his name. Now Paula thinks they are all accomplices in the plan. Juan decides he must go to Paula and immediately clear things up. Marely hopes Paula will listen to him.

Juan speedwalks out of Farell. Heriberto tries to stop him to discuss his career path but Juan gives him the bum's rush. Later Heriberto! Hasta mañana.

Kike can't find a place to park his truck so he drops Alirio off in front of the police station. Alirio dramatiacally states that he should take his last steps as a free man...alone. Kike is afraid Alirio will chicken out but Alirio assures him he must do this to save his soul. Please tell Nidia he did it for love.

Heriberto tells Pastor that Juan wouldn't take the time to talk to him about his career. He consoles himself by taking a coffee break with the sympathetic Don Pastor.

Alirio tries to confess at the police station but the desk sergeant thinks he's drunk. Alirio assures him he's not drunk, he's come to make an admission. They are interrupted by a noisy woman brandishing her umbrella and escorted by two cops. She denies stealing girdles at the market. She whaps Alirio with her umbrella as they drag her off. The desk sergeant, weary of Alirio's blathering confession of betraying his wife, tells Alirio to go home and ask his mujer for forgiveness. Please leave now, he's harried; he kicks Alirio out and calls for the next citizen. In the background the cops pull red underwear out of the umbrella lady's bags.

Juanito and Marely are ready for Fernando to drive them home. Juanito asks her is she sad because of what Paula told his papa? Marely tries to explain that Nidia did something very bad and Juan accidentally got mixed up in it. She's too ashamed to tell Juanito what it is but she feels responsible. Why? Because it affects other people. Juanito asks, did Marely do bad, yes or no? Marely supposes no. Then Juanito doesn't understand why she feels at fault. "You're good and my papa knows it!" he insists. Marely sweetly tells him how much his words mean to her. They leave with Fernando and his armful of Campeoni paperwork.

Paula's tea party for one is interrupted by the doorbell. It's Juan. She screams that she has nothing to say to him! Juan angrily insists he has something to say to her and she's going to listen. She threatens to call the police. She says she won't listen. "That's why I'm here," he points out, "because you have the wrong idea!"

Ana runs downstairs, what's the commotion? Juan tells her he's come to say something and he's not leaving until he says it. Ana suggests that now is not the best time as her daughter is out of sorts. "No Señora," Juan insists, "your stubborn daughter will listen to me, because although she yells, bellows and throws a hissy fit, I'm not moving from here until I show her she's mistaken!"

We open on Doña Sofia’s chat with Justo establishing where Camila is (gone). No they aren’t going to try to get rid of the baby—it’s coming home with her eventually, to accompany Paco as another out of wedlock grandchild. ( If people don’t buy the story that the kid is an orphan, I guess they will just spin some of those family immaculate conception stories like the ones in One Hundred Years of Solitude.) Sofia is ticked that Justo told her husband and not her. She asks for news of Ric and Justo says he doesn’t know if he is dead or alive but if he’s alive, he doesn’t want him coming back and turning the child into a pirate. Sofia suggests that they may be worried that Ric will come back—that’s why they sent Cami away. Justo self-righteously says that then he can hang—he’s a wanted man . Sofia points out that Ric makes his living with danger.

Next up, the family picnic (Ines, Vasco and Paco) is invaded by Ursula on horseback, trailed by the hapless Rita. Before the ladies show up, Paco announces that he doesn’t want to be a miller like his Daddy, he wants to be “a sailor” like Ric and have a big boat. When Ursula comes by and cracks about how cute they all look, Vasco makes a point of planting a big kiss on Ines. Ursula huffs and rides away. Paco starts to go after Aunt Rita but Ines holds him back afraid that Rita’s horse, which she barely controls will stomp him.

A quick shot over to Camila at the home for unwed Pirate’s wenches. She’s sewing. She looks up to heaven and says, “You’re in heaven, (Ric) please protect your child.” She gives a little sob.
Ursula is back at the palace drinking tea. She is interviewing Manuela on the whereabouts of Mister Lancaster. Mani swears she couldn’t find out anything about the guy. Ursula is disappointed but she notices Rita approach and gives a nasty laugh at her, saying how her mother spoils her more than herself, giving her jewels and attention. When Rita comes over, she and Mani exchange rather fake, stiff kisses. (Don’t mess up my makeup hugs—Margarita said last night). Rita asks Mani why she (unlike her dad) can’t accompany them riding. Mani says, sure she can. Rita manages to touch on a sore subject immediately with Mani—“How’s the new stepmom?” Mani says “fine” a little curtly and Ursula offers her some tea.

Meanwhile Ric’s convalescence is not going smoothly. He tries to get up again, lies back and cries with frustration. “Don’t lose faith, my love. By all that I hold dear…” he calls out to Camila across the sea.

Days later, a coach rides up to Camila’s country hideaway. Justo disembarks with Ofelia and a number of baskets. Camila is now showing and Ofelia makes a fuss and tells her she’s brought her some remedies and some maternity clothes. Justo’s brought cheese and other food. Camila says that he shouldn’t have bothered. He hands the basket to the servant. (Nice try, Justo but you’re still a jerk.) Camila turns to Ofelia and asks about Jimena. Ofelia tells her that she’s liking her new job as a tavern wench. (I imagine her tips are good). Then she asks about Ines and Vasco and Ofelia says that it seems that they’ve reconciled. Cami is very happy at this news. She looks at her Dad and asks, “And Rita?” Ofelia quickly says that they are all fine. Camila says tentatively “They haven’t forgotten about me?” Ofelia says no, that would be impossible. Justo looks sad.

Next we are in a not so happy house. LaFont and Lis are in their great room. (Lis by the way has gone from dressing in whites and pastels to an all black, widows weeds look. Very dowdy too—no cleavage and long sleeves. She clasps her shawl tightly around her neck.) Maybe she doesn’t want to give LaFont any ideas). He tells her that he wants to have Jorge over for dinner soon. Lis asks when and he says whenever he can get Sofia to agree. Lis looks worried and LaFont laughs and says not to worry. She’ll have to come around to the idea that she is now his wife. He grabs her roughly and sticks a glass of wine in her face, forcing her to drink. A little fast it turns out because half of it splashes out across her face. For some reason this is a turn on for him because he kisses her wine stained face. Lis continues right on asking him about the proposed social engagement and Sofia’s not liking her. LaFont laughs it off and says that Jorge’s family is not exactly a picture of rectitude. He announces that Ursula is slut. Lis is surprised. “Yeah, she likes them young and strong. Her last affair was with Vasco.” Lis says “I can’t believe it! Does her father know?” La Font says (all the time holding her close and grabbing her face) . La Font says [I think] yes, and Sofia too. “How awful,” says Lis. LaFont is getting more amorous. Lis asks about Camila. LaFont says that she’s still in that town. “What town?” asks Lis. “Garbancillo. And if there is no news, it means that everything is fine.” He starts groping her. Either she has gotten used to it or she’s a little more into it since she’s not putting up much of a fight. But—she’s saved by Manuela who comes into the room. LaFont disgustedly throws Lis’s shawl back around her neck and turns to Manuela. Lis smiles. La Font uses the occasion to upbraid Manuela about not visiting Ursula. Manuela mumbles something about her charity work but promises to visit her. She excuses herself and flees. Lis asks if he has thought of marrying her off. Yes, he says. “With whom?” “I’m thinking about it,” he responds grabbing her around the waist. He doesn’t want to marry her off to a nobody. Lis presses on while he starts taking her shawl off again. “Anybody in mind?” “Yes. But I’m not going to tell you.” She pulls away from him and tears roll down her cheeks. “I’m going to tell my aunt that it’s time for dinner.” She backs away and out of the room. LaFont looks thoughtful. [We see a flashback of him encountering Ursula and Rita on their horseback riding outing.]
Meanwhile, Lis is spilling the beans to Fran. Lis tells her that the town where Camila is being kept is called Garbancillo. Fran is like, big whoop. There’s a knock at the door and it’s Clotilde the maid with a fresh chamberpot. Lis asks her where Garbancillo is Fran shoots Lis a nasty look and grabs her arm. Clotilde notices that this a controversial topic ands says meekly that she’s never been there but it’s about a day’s travel away. She slinks out.

Next we see her outside at the gate, encountering Auxiliadora, the midwife who is there to give her report to LaFont. Auxiliadora isn’t all that friendly but Clotilde is suspicious with the mention of “Garbancillo” and “midwife.” She immediately gives a report to Lis. Lis gets excited at this news and yells at Clotilde not to tell anyone that she has told her. Clotilde timidly swears and promises that she can count on her. [Yeah, right]

Next we see Manuela unburdening herself with Ascanio, (dressed up very nicely) with Agata the nanny the disapproving chaperone. Mani is complaining about how her Dad is pounding on her to visit Ursula more often. Mani also tells him that Ursula has charged her with trying to get info on Mr. Lancaster. Ascanio asks why and she responds that she doesn’t know. Also strange is that her Dad doesn’t want her to go with Rita and Ursula on their horseback riding jaunts. Ascanio asks why again and Mani says she doesn’t know that either. Dad’s always been a little odd. He’s always asking her to do things and not explaining. Mani smiles and turns to a more pleasant subject. “How’s the new job?” Ascanio says it’s great, he’s learning a lot. And---the new boss (Santiago) says that he might be able to help them! He takes her hand and she gets up from the bench excitedly. “With my Dad?” Ascanio says not to get her hopes up too much yet. Manuela says that Santiago is going to be the future lord of San Fernando. Dad won’t be able to say no! She grabs him and hugs him. Ascanio looks over her shoulder and sees two ladies pass by. His smile turns to a look of worry. Manuela feels him stiffen, turns around and sees the ladies who are now gossiping. She sits back down. They exchange worried glances.

It’s now night. Pablo has reached his destination, which is Ric’s former country estate. He checks out the place and sees it closed up, furniture covered up and no Jimena.

Meanwhile, Santiago is in for a night of gentlemen’s’ entertainment with Jorge and the boys. They have dancing girls and plenty of booze. Santiago looks uncomfortable when a dancer starts shoving her butt in his face.

Meanwhile Pablo makes his way to Justo’s place. Justo is working in the garden. Pablo tells him that he’s come on behalf of Don Ricardo. Justo is super slo-mo impactado.

Next we Lis, dressed a little more as in former days in an aquamarine dress with an open neck. She is chatting with Fran about the possibilities with the midwife. Fran tells her to go through her husband who already has some kind of arrangement with her obviously. Lis says she’d rather make her own arrangements, in case LaFont says no. Fran worries about this but Lis says they can just pay the midwife to keep her mouth shut. Lis plots that it will be easy to take the baby. Camilia’s family won’t want it. She’s getting rid of their problem. Fran thinks it’s dangerous because they aren’t from there—they don’t know the lay of the land and her husband is very powerful. Any of these people could betray her in order to curry favor with him. Lis says she has to do it anyway. Fran sniffs that she should be looking to having her own children. Lis says whether she does or not, it has nothing to do with this. Fran gives her her dolly, which she hugs.

Justo has recovered from the shock of the news and verifies with Pablo that yes, Rick is ALIVE. Pablo smiles and says yes. Justo looks around nervously and asks if he is there. Pablo says no. He’s on an island in the Antilles, recovering. But he wants to know about Dona Camila. Justo says “my daughter is fine” non-commitally. Pablo says he has brought money to pay for Camila’s freedom letter. Justo tells him that it’s not necessary. She’s already free. Pablo says “That’s great! Can I talk to her?” Justo says “Why?” “So that I can hand her this letter on behalf of Don Ricardo.” He hands Justo the letter. Justo says he’ll give her the letter. Pablo asks again if she’s OK. Justo brusquely assures him that she is. Pablo says that he’d like to see her himself because he has something very important to give her. Justo gives him a sharp look and says “I guess you are a pirate too?” “You’d better get going because the town is full of guards and what with happened with your boss, they look suspiciously at all outsiders.” Pablo catches his drift. Justo is no longer to be considered a friend. He thanks him and leaves.

Later, Justo opens and reads the letter from Ric. He picks up a match and burns it. Taking no chances, he watches the entire thing burn in a plate. He then runs over to tell Santiago and suggests that there isn’t enough protection on the house in case the pirates find out where she is staying and try to get her. Santiago says he’ll let the guards know at the house. Santiago asks about the letter and he tells him that he made sure it was completely destroyed this time.
Later, Ofelia is with Santiago and the baby. Ofelia makes a fuss over how fancy the baby is dressed. Santiago says that Sofia gave her some old clothes of Tita’s. Ofelia asks if Ursula minds. After all, she’ll probably have more kids when she remarries. Santiago says he doesn’t think she cares. Everybody’s been real nice to them and he smiles broadly. Ofelia asks about Rita and the smile vanishes. He notes that Ursula is teaching her to ride. Just then Paco runs in trailing Ines and they make a big fuss over the baby.

Out in the fields, Ursula and Rita encounter LaFont. The wind is kicking up the dust. Ursula seems annoyed to see him. He wants to accompany them and Rita says she doesn’t mind. He falls in with them.

Santiago is checking in with the twins from the forge. They fill him in on what’s happening at the shop. The lanterns are selling at Uriel’s shop. One of them asks him why he changed his mind about letting Uriel sell them and Santiago says that now that he’s accepted being part of the upper crust, he couldn’t see how he could refuse him. And it’s good for them, for the business. The twins agree. Santiago smiles.

Back in the fields, La Font compliments Rita on her riding. Rita demurs, saying that Ursula may be a good teacher but she (Rita) still lacks the ability. LaFont makes a crack that he’s heard how good a rider Ursula is. Ursula says she’s a better rider than a lot of men. LaFont says no doubt and laughs nastily at his own joke. Ursula invites him to race her and takes off. LaFont turns to Rita and asks if she will join them. Rita says no, she’s afraid that that she’ll get thrown but LaFont pulls out a knife and sneakily stabs Rita’s horse in the hindquarters. The horse takes off, with Rita barely hanging on. Sure enough, she falls off and rolls down a ravine. (OH NO! THE DREADED TELENOVELA ROAD RASH! As seen previously in Duelo de Pasiones (Death) and in Amar Sin Limites (Amnesia) They didn’t do it in slo mo here).

Next we see the guards coming up to Santiago, Ines and Rita and telling him about the accident and that she’s very gravely injured. The women are horrified and Santiago runs off with the guard.

At the mansion, Ursula is crying and worried that she will be blamed. “Rita insisted that she wanted to learn how to ride!” Fortunata tries to comfort her. LaFont and Justo are also there. LaFont tries to explain that he met them on the road and that Ursula suggested a race. Vasco who is there also gets mad hearing this but LaFont claims that Ursula challenged him, not her. Next the doctors come down, both the European one and Fukuda. Jorge asks and they tell him that they can’t give a lot of hope. The European one says that he thinks that her internal organs were damaged. Justo asks if they can do anything and the European doctor says no. Santiago takes Fukuda aside and asks him and Fukuda says “There’s nothing to do.” LaFont puts on a look of fake pity and says “What a tragedy!” The European doctor says that he gave Rita some Laudanum so that she would not suffer too much. Santiago asks “How much time does she have left?” “I don’t think she’ll last until tomorrow” says the doctor. Justo wilts and Ursula weeps. Fukuda says that she’s asking for Santiago and her Father.

The go in to see her. [The doctor then says something else I couldn’t quite catch] More tears from everybody. Including Sofia who we also see is there.

Santiago and Justo arrange themselves on either side of Rita’s deathbed. She’s scraped up and breathing heavily. “I’m going to die. She says, before I go, I have to confess to something.” Justo tells her the priest is coming. No, she wants to confess to them NOW. Santiago tries to reassure her that she doesn’t need to tell them anything. Rita says she doesn’t want to go with a guilty conscience. Justo tries to soothe her by saying that she hasn’t done anything wrong. YES she has, she insists. She schemed against her sister. Justo interrupts her that her sister has always understood her and he’s sure she’s forgiven her. “I was always always jealous of her” continues Rita. Santiago, who is holding her hand, is starting to get nervous. She goes on “When she was kidnapped. I was happy.” (Justo takes his hand away and puts his hands over his eyes.) “The letter that arrived from LaMariana saying that she was alive and asking us to help rescue her DID ARRIVE. I got it. I destroyed it.” (Santiago is impactado. Both he and Justo's faces are bathed with tears.) “I did it so that she would never return. So that I could marry you.” Santiago still holds tight to her hand and tells her not to say anymore. She begs Santiago’s forgiveness but he shakes his head and growls a low “no” and says to ask God for forgiveness. That he will know how to understand (what she did.) She says she forgives him for not loving her, because she knows she never deserved it. Justo tries to get her to stop but she continues. She then asks him to marry Camila and to repay all the damage she has done to her by being happy with her. Santiago cries, but it’s not clear if he’s crying with guilt for Rita or Camila. Rita next asks him to ask Camila to take care of their baby daughter as if she were her own. “She’ll be a better mother than me…and you will have the happiness you deserve.” She finally says “I love you. I will always love you.” She winces and asks for her father.

It’s night now and the priest has FINALLY arrived. The room is full of candles and Rita is now clutching a cross. The priest asks everyone to leave and he and a lone altar boy do the last rites.
We jump ahead past the wake to the gravesite service. The principals, including Rita, Fortunata and Don Marcelino and Don Eustaquio (official witnesses?), dressed in black are in the cemetery as Rita’s casket is lowered into the ground. Ursula seems genuinely shaken up still from her part in the “accident.” Justo takes a cloth from around his neck and some dirt and throws it on top of the coffin in the grave. The priest gives a eulogy focusing on how death is not an ending but merely the door to an eternal life. Others throw flowers and dirt on the coffin. Lots of tears from the women and discomfort from the men. Ofelia takes something from her hair or ears (earrings?) and throws it into the grave. Next we see Lis and Fran are there. Another look at Justo’s face, crazed with grief and finally a long camera view of the proceedings. A cloud of black silhouetted against the fields. With the purple and white bedecked funeral cart nearby.

After the funeral, back at Mancera mansion we see that Ursula’s fears have not been unwarranted. Jorge is chewing her out for causing Rita’s death. Ursula says no but goes all tacky by trying to blame Rita herself for being ambitious and nuevo riche, and demanding that she teach her how to ride. Jorge agrees with the assessment on Rita but he asks her why they had to go out riding way out in the fields. She gets down on her knees and begs his forgiveness. He then starts asking about LaFont. Why he was there, what he did. Ursula mentions that he wouldn’t let Manuela go riding with them for some reason. Jorge then asks about the challenge. Ursula insists that she challenged LaFont, not Rita. Jorge looks thoughtful.

Next, Jorge is with LaFont. LaFont is complaining that Jorge is blaming HIM for his daughter’s thoughtlessness. Jorge reminds him [and we get a sepia toned flashback] of the time when LaFont suggested that if Rita died, that maybe his daughter could marry Santiago. LaFont complains that it was an accident and not to pin it on him. He tries to change the subject to his and Sofia’s coming over for dinner. Jorge says “We’re in mourning. We aren’t going to any parties.” “You don’t say” says LaFont archly.

Back in Ursula’s boudoir, she’s weeping to Fortunata. “It wasn’t my fault.” She admits that she never liked Rita but she didn’t want to kill her. Fortunata agrees but she tells her that it was unwise (to race.) Ursula insists again that she challenged LaFont not Rita. And if Rita decided to race too, it was her own fault. Fortunata tries to be sympathetic but Ursula cries that everybody is looking at her like she’s responsible. Fortunata tries to comfort her and hugs her. She is sure people are talking due to the shock of the sudden death.

It’s night time and back at Ofelia’s, the two families, including Jimena and Ascanio are sitting around. Justo remarks that he doesn’t understand why God has sent so many trials to his family. Ofelia says not to think that way. Things happen as they do. “We all feel bad. It’s been a great misfortune for our family too.” Ofelia goes over to Santiago. She tells him to think of little Anamaria. She wants him to let her take care of the baby. Santiago nods and agrees. Back at the table, Ines asks if Justo will tell Camila. Justo says no. It will be too painful for her. Ascanio exploits the opportunity to ask about how she’s doing. Justo says fine. Calm. Vasco shoots back “Calm? I don’t think so Dad…” Santiago comes over to the table but is silent. Justo says “Your sister has accepted that she committed a great error in living in sin with that man…and hopefully God will give her the opportunity to start a new life.” He looks over at Santiago who looks back at him. Santi looks a bit uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, at the house in Garbancillo, Camila has a chat with the maid, Julia. She’s not feeling well. The maid asks if she wants her to find her aunt, the grouchy midwife. Camila says no, she’s feeling a little off but not too bad. The maid is worried about the effect on the baby. She then asks Camila if she’s living there to be hidden due to the baby. Camila says yes. The maid says, so the father won’t claim it? Camila says that he did nothing wrong. He doesn’t even know that I am pregnant. The maid wants to know why she didn’t tell him. “Because I couldn’t” says Camila. The maid says that she assumed that when she arrived, the baby was Santiago’s, since he came with them. Camila says no, he only came to help out her Father. “And your lover? You don’t have a way to contact him?” Camila shakes her head. “I don’t even know if he is dead or alive.” Julia is impactada.

Alive Ric is and getting his beard shaved off at the moment. Mario is with him and mentions that Foreman hasn’t been around. For sure this means that he’s making arrangements for his big finish. Ric agrees and says that before he sees him again he wants to see Camila. But he still can’t fight or even get out of the chair he’s in. Mario says he’s going to have to get out of that chair if he’s going to go looking for his woman. Ric grunts and gestures unhappily. Just then Magdalena runs in, falling out of her dress as usual. She announces that Pablo has arrived. Ric makes another gesture and Mario urges her to let him come in. Ric immediately asks him if he has seen Camila and Pablo says no. Ric wants to know why and Pablo asks him to let him tell his tale. He went to see Justo and he told him that he came on behalf of Ric…we don’t hear the rest because it’s cut off by a commercial.

Instead, we see that Santiago and Justo are visiting Camila. She asks about everybody. They lie and tell her that everyone is well. Including Rita. Santiago tries to change the subject to how she’s doing. She says she’s OK but lonely. They ask about the midwife and she says she’s been OK and Julia, the maid has been nice. Justo again brought food and Camila again says he needn’t have bothered. She points out that it’s getting cooler so they’d best go in the house.

Back at Ric’s, he’s trying to figure out what’s going on back in San Fernando by asking Pablo questions. Pablo tells him that Justo refused the money to buy Camila’s freedom. Ric asks who paid, “Santiago?” Pablo says he doesn’t know. Justo wouldn’t say. Ric thinks that Justo would have preferred that his body be feeding the fishies right now. He figures that they are trying to keep him away from her. Paisana interjects that he shouldn’t think the worst. If Justo had really been against him, he would have turned Pablo in as a pirate. Ric is determined. He has to go find Camila. Mario points out that he can’t even get up from his chair. Ric says he’s got to. He then insults Mario by telling him he doesn’t undertand. He’s never had a great love, a pasion. Mario shoots back “HOW DO YOU KNOW?” Ric says that he’s always said so, his actions have always shown it. Mario suddenly leaves the room, with Ric shouting after him. Paisana says “You’ve offended him.” Ric says “Yes and he’s offended me, by not recognizing what Camila means to ME. “ Ric continues that he’s tired of living this way. Camila is his his hope of a better future, of a decent life and his only reason for living. Paisana says they are all tired of living this way, but if he’s going to succeed, he’s going to have to start thinking with his head and not with his heart. Paisana leaves the room and Pablo asks Ric if he needs anything. If he needs help getting back to his bed. Ric says no. After he leaves, Ric prays that God forgive him his sins and give him strength, not for his sake, but for Camila’s. He can feel it that she needs him. He feels it in his bones. (Actually, his guts, but we don’t usually say that in English).

Back in San Fernando, Jimena who is upstairs at the tavern, sweeping a balcony, apparently cleaning the rooms. She calls out to Ascanio below on the street. He walks up. They exchange the news. He is going to the Mass for the dead offered for Rita (Today this is usually an anniversary mass, offered a week, month and/or a year later and is different from the funeral mass. It's possible that back then, they had only the gravesite service and then a mass later, due to wanting to bury people quicker without embalming being available.) Afterward, there is going to be a lunch at Justos. He asks if she is going and she says she has to work. He asks if she can get time off and she says they won’t let her. But Ascanio can ask for her…and since he is influential…they laugh about this and he goes in to ask her boss. Jimena is gleeful.

On the way out of town, Santiago and Justo stop at the tavern.

Back at the house, Cami talks to the baby. She tells it that it will be born healthy and strong. She hopes that one day that they will be reunited with it’s father.

Back to Justo and Santiago. They are having a cup of something and chatting. Justo says that he knows it’s really soon to be talking about this but…he already knows how he feels about Camila. Justo says that he’s sorry about what Rita did to him. Santiago says he doesn’t think they are anybody to judge her. She’s confessed her sins and he’s sure God will forgive her. Besides, Rita herself asked. Justo doesn’t have any problem (with him hooking up with Camila). But Camila’s a fallen woman—it’s possible that Don Jorge will object. Santiago says he doesn’t think so. He thinks that after all this time, maybe God is making things right. That he and Camila are fated to be married. Justo says he’s happy to see this happen. But what about the baby? Camila isn’t going to want to be separated from it, says Justo. She’s already made him swear that wouldn’t happen.

Next time—LaFont breaks the news to Manuela that he has her in mind for Santiago’s Wife #2. Manuela is surprised and unhappy. Since we are now in ULTIMOS CAPITULOS we only get the generic flashes of things to come, including Camila going into labor.

Replay of yesterday’s scenes: Horacio is trying to find out why Socorro is so sad – she says her past was lingering by the front gate. Braulio tells Luci that he will help rein in Connie’s cruelty if she lays off Mili, and that domination is the way to handle him.

On to the new stuff: Socorro is in her night clothes, praying sadly beside her bed. Someone knocks and she gets into bed and pretends to be asleep. It’s Karla, but Socorro pretends not to hear.

Braulio is laying out his plan to Luci. He points out that she is very capable and that her lady friends can manage their family businesses – why not her too? She agrees that she could. Braulio says what if she knew a secret Connie was hiding – Luci thinks of Rosario. She asks Braulio why, seeing that he knows the secret and that Regina is so sad about her missing grandchild, hasn’t he told Regina? He says it’s not the moment. He says that Rosario is dead – and it’s Connie’s fault. Regina’s a bit too, because she didn’t stand up to her husband and Connie when they decided Connie should marry Luci.

So you hate Regina too? asks Luci. No, I don’t hate her, says Braulio, but I’m not going to tell her until the very last day of her life. When I see her on her deathbed, then, and only then, am I going to tell her. Wow – cold, Braulio.

In the foyer, Vale and two of her giggly girlfriends are squished together on the weensy couch, talking to Alex. Pilar is there too. They are discussing the campout/stag/stagette party that everyone apparently is going to. They all think Alex should go – Pilar gets up and strokes him and says, let’s go on it. He snaps at her that she should go if she likes.

Mili walks in. Alex asks her if she wants him to come. She says of course not. So I’ll go! he says. No no! she pleads. Because I love you, announces Alex, and I’m saying it right here in front of everyone. Oy, say the girlfriends, laughing. Pilar gives him the stink eye. Vale asks him not to embarrass her in front of her friends. She explains to them that he loves to joke and he would never fall in love with a servant.

Pilar stands up for Mili – she’s not a servant, she’s the future wife of your cousin. Oh, no, she’s not says Alex. Pilar taunts him – you couldn’t get her into your bed and now you’re all obsessed with her. No, says Alex, she would be marrying without love. Of course without love says Vale, she just wants to get out of the serving class. It’s the money you’re going for, isn’t it? she directs at Mili. Most servants sleep with the patrons for free, but you’re going to get a stack of money out of it. Stop it Vale! says Pilar. Hey, chill, say the girlfriends.

Alex tells Mili, everyone is wondering and I want to hear myself: What are your actual reasons for marrying Hugo? You don’t get it, says Mili. I don’t love you any more. I’m in love with Hugo and I’m going to marry him. Alex is abashed, and Vale and the girlfriends giggle.

Mili flees to the dining room and cries. Pilar comes in and lays a hand on her shoulder. Mili grabs her and sobs tell me the truth, that there was nothing between you and Alex, because he told me there wasn’t. Let me go, says Pilar. She wanders to one side, looks tragic and works up a few fake tears. He spoke to me of love, and yet now he’s not going public with it. Don’t get mixed up with a guy like him – he likes to play with people’s hearts. Don’t leave Hugo for him. She wipes a tear from Mili’s face. Mili says I feel like I’m losing my mind. Vale comes in, sees them, and reproaches Pilar for comforting Mili.

Alex comes in and says I don’t believe you Mili. Why are you marrying him? Vale says, for money. It’s a lie says Mili. Vale says maybe Hugo buys your story, but don’t expect us to. Mili grabs Alex’s hand and pulls him out of the room.

She pulls him into Regina’s room. Tell him who’s inheriting from you, says Mili. Regina says Mili is. See? says Mili angrily I don’t need to marry for money - and she tells him off a bit. Regina tells her to cool it. Alex flees to his room and is anguished.

He calls Bobby and Bobby says if you’re upset it must be Mili. Alex tells him that Regina has made Mili her heir. Are you upset about her marrying Hugo or being the heir, asks Bobby. Looks like she isn’t marrying for money, so it must be love. She’s not marrying for love! says Alex and he hangs up. He blubbers a bit and Pilar shows up. She sits down close beside him on the bed and strokes his cheek. He thanks her for standing up for Mili. She tells him that Mili said she’s sick of him pursuing her all the time.

But she doesn’t love Hugo, says Alex. Accept it, says Pilar. She’s not marrying for money. She loves him. Pilar is closing in, giving him little smoochies while he cries. Let me help you get over her, she says. She keeps smooching on him and finally he smooches back and they fall out of the camera’s view onto the bed.

The girls dorm. Mili is in bed, staring into the dark. Gloria says I don’t like to see you like this. Lina gets up too. Mili is blubbering. I lied to Alex because he hurt me so much. But right in front of everyone he announced that he loves me. And I love him more than life itself. Go tell him, it’s not too late, say the gal pals. In her bunk, Karla listens.

Mili comes into Alex’s room. He is in bed, looks like nothing on. All that weight lifting has really paid off, muscles are bulging everywhere. Mili tells him she’s so sorry, etc., and he looks touched, but also keeps flicking his eyes nervously off at what must be the bathroom. Uh oh. Mili stutters on, about to blurt out that she loves him when Pilar emerges in a bathrobe and asks what she can do for Mili.

Mili runs out and has a mini-breakdown in the hall. Alex runs out and tries to explain (how?) but she calls him a liar and runs off. He pounds the wall and says he is an imbecile.

Pilar comes out and asks what’s up. Alex tells her to go, that what was between them was a mistake. Pilar doesn’t look too discouraged.

Mili is in full meltdown in the girls dorm. She tells the pals that she found Alex in bed with Pilar. The gal pals point out kindly that Mili rejected him and said she loved another so he’s not entirely to blame - maybe he felt driven into Pilar’s arms.

Horacio is having coffee and Morgan comes in carrying a fishing pole. He still has one little bandage on. He’s all pumped about the camping trip, but Horacio says he’s staying here with Socorro because she’s really down.

Luci comes into Damien’s office and asks him what position she could hold with the company, like office director or boss? He asks if she’s been drinking. She says of course not, and since she has 20% of the shares, with his and Alex’s support, maybe…. Damien says Connie would never allow it. She says Regina might support her. I sincerely doubt it says Damien. Why don’t you run along on home? You’ll be happier there.

Horacio is in the kitchen with Socorro trying to get her to tell what’s wrong, but she says she said too much already. Braulio comes in, sorting through the mail, and exclaims that a letter was misdelivered – it’s to Amparo Rodriquez. Socorro looks like she’s going to faint. Ooops! Down she goes. Horacio and Braulio fan her frantically.

The camping adventure is starting. Everyone emerges from a big black SUV and looks out over a pond the color of pea soup. I hope no one wants to go swimming. Everyone is ready to go have fun. Hugo kisses Mili, and Pilar hangs on Alex, posing with him beside the pond while Mili looks on. Alex’s sweater is the same pea green as the pond. He asks Pilar what she wants to do and they head off, looking like a couple.

Regina is in the foyer and the handsome young doctor emerges. Seems like Socorro had a case of nerves and he’s given her a prescription for a tranquillizer and told her she must have absolute rest for a while. Regina says such a scare, and almost no one in the house. Where did they go, asks the doctor. Regina explains they’re off camping – you know kids! The doctor says she should have gone along.

Socorro is in bed but thinks she should get back to work. Horacio tells her no, stay there and rest. She asks him to do a favor and keep a secret. She asks him to go get that letter. He says but it’s for Amparo Rodriguez. That’s me, says Socorro.

Morgan is fishing and Vale and her girlfriends are with him. Vale says it’s boring. Morgan hooks something and struggles mightily with it, maybe it’s a shark! This is a lake, she scoffs. He reels in a smallish fish. Vale scoffs some more and goes off, and the girlfriends take his picture.

Socorro is explaining to Horacio that she changed her name after Karla was born. She thought a new name would go with a new life. Actually, she says, Socorro is her middle name. No more questions right now, she says. Who’s it from? asks Horacio. You never talk about Karla’s father. Could it be him? Why did he stop loving you? [I hope I got that right] I didn’t deserve it, she says. Now go get the letter. He starts to go, then turns and says I don’t care about your past – for me you will always be Socorrito.

The campers are lounging on the slopes of Algae Pond, a few geese are swimming. The grocery guy tells a lame joke and only Gloria laughs. They speculate on whether there are any snakes around. Vale jumps up and says something bit her – on her rear. Morgan offers to draw the venom out.

Horacio comes into the kitchen and finds Braulio reading the letter. He sharply reproaches Braulio. Braulio says Socorro lied to them. He is aghast as only Braulio can be. He says Socorro must leave this house immediately.

Somehow Hugo has unglued himself from Mili and has left her alone. She is sitting on a bench pondside, enjoying the sun. Alex comes up and offers to look at his fortune cards for her. Of course when he lays them out he says that she is going to be very unhappy in her marriage because she isn’t in love. He says someone very near to her loves her very much.

So much that he was in bed with another woman, she says. I made a mistake – everyone makes mistakes, says Alex. I’m dying for you. Of laughter? asks Mili. How come you came on this trip? Because it’s your party, and because I still have hopes. You and I are very different (she agrees). I can’t stand to see you wreck your life like this. I’m not wrecking it she says.

Oops! Looks like Hugo was just off at the outhouse. He’s lurking behind a tree. Alex proposes to Mili that she pass a test – give him one last kiss and he will know if she’s in love with Hugo, then he’ll leave her alone forever. She hesitates and then agrees. They kiss briefly (and of course in view of the whole lake – there’s really no need for Hugo to lurk). A goose swims by during the kiss – I guess they couldn’t afford a swan. Hugo fidgets. Mili breaks off the kiss and says there, now go. Alex says sure – and I found out what I wanted to know. You’re not in love with Hugo. He leaves.

Hugo comes out from behind the tree. Why those tears, he asks. Is it about the wedding, he fakes. Are you scared? Don’t be. I’m going to make you very happy. He gives her a kiss on the cheek and holds her close, happy. She looks away, uncomfortable.

A montage of fun at the pond. Our gang are taking turns riding a pulley across the lake, are trying the climbing wall, and even are riding horses.

Back at Casa Belmonte, Karla is in the sack with Damien. He’s glad she didn’t go, but she’s kinda sorry. She says when they have their party, can it be a camping trip? He doesn’t like the mosquitoes and red ants. Why don’t we go ahead and get married, she says. We’ll see he says. Karla says I want to get out of this uniform! He lifts the covers. Looks like you’ve already gotten out of it, he says. That Damien, what a card.

Braulio apparently hasn’t given up the letter yet. Horacio wants to take it to Socorro. It’s full of revelations, says Braulio. She has quite a past – she’s not who we thought she was. If you want to know, read it yourself. He leaves, and Horacio pulls the letter from its envelope. What a skunk! Wait, no, he’s folding it up unread. He says when Socorro is ready to confide in me, then I’ll find out what’s in it. What a guy! A prince.

It’s campfire time, complete with a marshmallow roast. Bobby is singing – but unfortunately not kumbaya. Gawd, he’s bad. Apparently he’s singing a love song to Vale, who is sitting with Morgan, enjoying it. No one else seems to like it. Alex, because he’s an imbecile as he noted earlier, is sitting with Pilar, who is cozied up to him. Way to show Mili there’s nothing between them.

Socorro has noted that the letter has been opened and Horacio tells her Braulio read it but promised not to tell. Socorro says why didn’t you read it and Horacio says because I want you to trust me. She tells him that the man who sent it – she thinks she saw him in the street. He’s a man who just got out of jail. No, he’s not Karla’s father, but he knows the truth because he protected her at the time. Socorro says she told Karla that her husband, Karla’s father, abandoned them, but it’s not true. There was no husband.

Socorro says that she was a dancer in the red light district, and after dancing, she and her friends would… she breaks off. You mean you were a ….? asks Horacio. No! she says.

Back to the marshmallow roast. The grocery kid is about to say something important to Gloria, but Lina overhears and goes and drags him over to the fire, positioning herself next to him. Vale decides she’s having a good time. Morgan says hand the guitar here - he decides not to play it, but to use it as a drum. He does a half-singing, half rap number while everyone claps.

Socorro is telling her story. She and the dance girls were expected to have drinks with the customers, but the customers weren’t supposed to touch. One night a fellow in fine clothes came in, was nice (cue the Piaf song), then got drunk and wanted to kiss her. But nothing happened. She was walking home in the morning and a few blocks away he grabbed her and wanted to take her up to his room. She yelled, but no one heard her. She said no no no no – Socorro is crying and Horacio hugs her.

At the campfire, Hugo and Mili show up. Mili says she has a headache. He is happy, she is very subdued. A toast to the novios is proposed and cans of something are passed around. Alex looks sober and Mili glances at him. They toast. Alex suggests Mili sing, Hugo says she doesn’t feel well. Bobby says he’ll accompany on the guitar and he starts up without asking her what song. She sings a heartfelt song about a relationship that broke off who knows why, an eternal love, about goodbyes. It’s lovely and sad. Vale looks serious, Alex tears up, ignoring Pilar who snuggles up to him. I’m going to forget you, sings Mili, looking at Alex. The song ends, Alex looks stunned, Hugo, who seems to have missed the point, kisses Mili’s cheek. Freeze frame.

Avances: Luci is asking Andrea to help her control her husband by feeding her some information that is bad enough to send him to jail. In the girls dorm with the padre watching, Alex is reciting wedding vows to an astonished Mili. He asks the padre to marry them then and there.

Ester tells Inspector Duarte that Alcides/Hugo has changed. Maybe so,
says the Inspector but he only deals in facts. Hugo says that he is
innocent. "Really?" says Duarte, "How do you know since you claim to
have lost your memory?" Hugo says that he would remember killing his
wife. "Tell it to the judge," says Duarte. The police handcuff Hugo.
Ester tells the police that Soledad wouldn't have denounced Alcides.
Hugo says that he doesn't believe Soledad was involved and that the
accusation came through Arturo. Duarte tells him to be careful who he
accuses. He tells them it was who Lucas denounced Hugo. Ester is
impactada.

Paquito tells Arturo that he has told Eloisa many times what a great guy
Arturo is and what a big mistake she is making by dumping him. Arturo
says that he knows that Eloisa's actions are caused by the other man she
is seeing. In addition to finding out about Eloisa's other suitor,
Arturo wants Paquito to find out all he can about Alcides. For money,
Paquito is happy to do whatever Arturo wants but it might take a little
time. No problem, says Arturo.

Soledad tells Ursula and Enrico that she and the baby have to run away
from her house to avoid being forced to go back to live with Alcides.
She doesn't want her daughter around Alcides. Ursula and Enrico agree to
help her. They can go to Enrico's hideaway. They go out the window and
sneak along the side of the house. Ursula makes a noise but they escape
unheard. Soledad doesn't even leave a note, which, of course, is going
to make her family think that she was kidnapped.

Dr. Pablo talks to the other nurse and says that Beatriz has been acting
very strangely lately. He mentions that she won't answer his questions
and has moved from where she was living without telling anyone. The
nurse says that Beatriz has always been strange but agrees that lately
she has been more so.

In the House of Sadism not much is happening. Beatriz is either taking a
break from torturing Alcides or she is starting to go catatonic. Alcides
is either semi-conscious or he has learned that trying to reason with
Beatriz only gets him smacked around more.

While loading Soledad et al into his cart, Enrico remembers the flower.
He decides to back for it later. Guarding the flower is a command from
above. They have to have it.

Antonia tells Hugo that she will talk to Lucas and get him to withdraw
the charges. Hugo says that he only wants to protect Soledad. Ester asks
Hugo if he is really worried about Soledad and the baby. Hugo says, "Why
do you think that is so strange?" then he whispers to Ester, "Is it
because the marriage was only a business negotiation?" Ester, says, "No,
I know you loved her and that is why I didn't oppose the marriage."
"This is not the right moment to talk about that," says Hugo.

Outside the house, Boris insists that he has to speak with Hugo. The
police let Hugo speak briefly with Boris. He tells Boris to get money
together and bail him out of jail. If he has to stay in prison for any
length of time, he might get a catalepsy attack and be taken for dead
(again). Boris says he will do it right away.

Rebeca tells Eloisa that she is playing with fire by seeing Alcides.
Rebeca says that Eloisa has always wanted a rich husband and now she is
giving one up to be the mistress of a married man. Eloisa says that she
knows what she is doing. When Rebeca leaves, she says that she isn't
sure whether what she feels for Alcides is love or lust but she just
wants to spend a lot of time with him.

Paquito witnesses the arrival of Alcides in the paddy wagon at the
police station. He immediately wants to know why Alcides was arrested.

Lucas returns home to reproaches from Ester. Lucas believes that he is
protecting Soledad by getting Alcides out of her life. Ester is
convinced that Alcides has changed and no longer is any threat to their
daughter. Antonia comes in to report that Soledad and the baby are gone.

Enrico goes back to get flower. When he has gone, Soledad says that
Enrico is a little peculiar but he is a great person and she always
feels safe with him. Ursula doesn't offer her opinion.

Eloisa arrives at the Hacienda. Marina tells her that Alcides is out and
she doesn't know when he will be back. Eloisa says that she will wait.
Boris returns to the Hacienda to get the money to bail Hugo out of jail.
He tells Marina and Eloisa that Alcides/Hugo has been arrested. (It's
amazing that Boris and Marina never slip up and refer to their boss as
Hugo when someone else is present. It must be very confusing.) Eloisa
immediately leaves the Hacienda. She is sure that Hercu-less is watching
her and will report that she has been there to Alcides (and she is
right; he's in the bushes). She says that she will take care of that.

Paquito tells Arturo that Alcides was arrested. Paquito doesn't know why
yet but Arturo doesn't care. It's enough that Alcides is in jail. He
gives Paquito a lot of money and says that he needs to contact the
person who got Arturo out of jail before. More money changes hands.

Boris is packing up the bail money. He tells Marina that because of his
illness, Hugo can't stay locked up. He might have a catalepsy attack.
Marina asks if he has thought about what Hugo would do without him.
"It's my job to help him," replies Boris. Marina starts her old refrain
- what about us, our lives, our plans. "Don't start that again," says
Boris. Marina asks what Boris will do if he can't get Hugo out on bail.
Boris says that in that case, he will have to do something more radical.
Hugo can't tolerate being locked up. Marina then suggests that just
leaving Hugo in jail and going off to live on his money might be the
best thing for them. Boris is aghast. "I will never betray Hugo," he
says and leaves. Alone, Marina wonders if this is the opportunity to
separate Boris from Hugo that she has been waiting for. (Marina, you
really thought that Boris was going to react positively to a suggestion
that he let Hugo rot in jail, have a catalepsy attack and get buried
alive again? Why don't you ask him to just shoot Hugo and put him out
his misery and then steal all his money. )

Now the comic relief. Dr. Max decides to do a Pygmalion with Elena and
turn her into a lady. He gets her some fancy new clothes and tries to
teach her about wine, with little success. Dr. Max tells the Cabinet of
his Dead Wife not to be jealous. Elena is part of his plan to bring her
back to life. Guillermo plays a serenade on his violin for Elena, gets
into a fist fight with Dr. Max over her, releases some poison gas and
appears to be left behind in the laboratory to die. But we know that
won't happen.

Ester is concerned that Soledad and her baby have disappeared. They
wonder if she has been kidnapped. They will go to the police. As the
Obragon party leaves the house, Enrico, who has come back to get the
flower, hears that Alcides is in jail.

Arturo goes to see the prosecutor. This is the same prosecutor that
Paquito blackmailed to get Arturo out of jail before. The prosecutor
caves into Arturo's threats to reveal scandalous information about him.
Arturo tells the prosecutor that Alcides is his enemy and he wants him
dead. All the prosecutor has to do is have a certain prisoner put in
Alcides' cell.

Hugo is put into a cell. As he watches the guard lock the door of the
cell, you can see that he is going to react to being locked up the same
way he did to being in the mine. He tells himself that he has to be
strong. Soon, Boris will come and get him out of there. He has a
flashback to being buried alive.

At Enrico's Hideaway, Soledad is nervous and won't eat. Ursula says,
"Don't tell me you saw Hugo. This place has ghosts in it already."
Soledad claims this is different: something bad is going to happen. Her
heart is racing. Ursula suggests that maybe she is having a reaction to
the baby being kidnapped, etc.

The judge refuses to release Alcides/Hugo on bail. Boris is beside
himself. Inspector Duarte thinks Boris is acting suspiciously
considering his past experience with Alcides (having Boris arrested for
robbery; fighting about the will; throwing him out of his house, etc.)
Poor Boris. He can't explain.

Inspector Duarte goes to Hugo's cell and tells him that he will be there
for a long time. He tells Hugo that Soledad has disappeared. Duarte
tells Hugo that if he has had Soledad kidnapped to keep her from
testifying against him, he will hang.

As part of her plan to get Hercu-less off her tail, Eloisa goes to see
Gladis. She spins her a tale that she has postponed the wedding because
she is afraid of failing Arturo. She tells Gladis that she hasn't dumped
Arturo. She just needs more time. Arturo comes in. Eloisa says that
people are saying that Arturo kidnapped the baby but she doesn't believe
it. She says that she went to Alcides' house to tell him to stop
spreading lies about Arturo. Arturo appears to be completely bamboozled
by this. He is glad that Eloisa is defending him. Eloisa won't let him
kiss her and tells him that it doesn't mean she will marry him. He won't
pressure her to marry him. He only wants to be able to court her.

Enrico tells Ursula that Alcides has been arrested and they decide not
to tell Soledad about this. Soledad probably doesn't care what happens
to Alcides.

Arturo finds a lowlife and hires him to kill Alcides in prison this
night.

Soledad doesn't feel well. She says that she did wrong to leave her
house without saying goodbye but she was afraid of Alcides. Enrico blabs
that Alcides can't hurt her where he is now. Soledad asks what he means.
Ursula and Enrico have no choice but to tell her that Alcides has been
arrested.

The lowlife is put in Hugo's cell. Hugo is having trouble breathing and
is barely conscious. The lowlife says that he knows Hugo is faking being
ill to try and get released but it won't work. He admires Hugo's
jewelry.

Arturo is happy. He says that today is great day - by tonight Alcides
will be dead and Eloisa still cares for him. Hercu-less arrives and says
he saw Eloisa leave Alcides' house. The success of Eloisa's plan becomes
clear. Arturo no longer wants Hercu-less to spy on her. Gladis comes in
and reminds Hercu-less that he is supposed to be working for her. She
wants him back as her coachman.

Boris tells Marina to pack up their stuff. He has dynamite and he will
use it to get Hugo out of jail. Marina tells him that he is crazy. They
will be the obvious suspects if they break Hugo out of jail. They will
be fugitives. Whatever, says Boris but he must save Hugo.
When he leaves, Marina says that she can't permit Boris to do this.

Dr. Pablo follows Beatriz to the House of Sadism. He hears a man's voice
when she goes inside and wonders if Beatriz is living with a man there.

Boris sets the dynamite. Before he can light the fuse, Marina knocks him
unconscious. She begs his forgiveness but says that she can't continue
to let him do such crazy things.

Hugo is unconscious from a catalepsy attack. The lowlife waits until
everything is quiet and then starts to smother Hugo with his jacket. At
that moment, Soledad arrives outside Hugo's cell. She sees what is
happening and calls for the guard. The credits roll.


Tomorrow- Soledad gives Hugo mouth to mouth resuscitation.

There was a long overlap from the night before, lucky for me! I'll start with Andrea in the bathroom feeding Mili a load of crap. Mili should let Alex be happy with Andrea, a woman who really loves him. She cries the crocodile tears.

Alex wants his father to congratulate him on the nomination for the award. Connie is not forthcoming, and Alex is outraged. He thought for the first time in his life he might get the gold star from Daddy. Not this Daddy. Connie accuses Alex of bribing the judges. Meanwhile, it's Connie who tried to bribe the judges, as best as I can understand.

Lina tells everyone that they should have a "campamento" for Mili's bachelorette party. This seems to be a campfire/campout/cookout of sorts. Much better than the tacky round of bars and male strip clubs we see here.

We see Connie on the phone with the judges, who seem to be accusing him of bribing them. He says no--you misunderstood--I just wanted to help your charitable institution. Let's have dinner to discuss it. Isn't that more of a bribe? But I digress.

Andrea stalks Alex.

Mili sees Alex in the hall of the mansion and says hi, but he acts rude. She wants to congratulate him on the prize, but he says it's only a nomination. Snobby (Val) and Snouty (Pilar) come in, and there are more congratulations to go around. Snouty plants one on Alex, and Mili looks on impactada, then runs out. The girls are going to Rodeo. Alex tells Snouty not to kiss him anymore.

In the kitchen, the gals plan the campout.

Andrea stalks Alex She tells him he has to go to the restaurant tonight for a big surprise. He should take a date so it looks like he came there by accident.

Over at Rodeo, Val has agreed to have a duel by dance between Bobby and Morgan, both of whom still have their faces covered by butterfly bandages, so they look supremely silly. Pilar didn't come because they say that at the last minute Alex asked her out.

We now see Connie sitting at the restaurant table with two burly men. My husband, who does not watch this show, walked by and asked "Are those mobsters?" Well, these two guys with Connie certainly looked like cheap hoods on loan from the Goodfellas set. Connie is feeding them more baloney--he wanted to honor their organization, which is a key piece in the revitalization of the Mexican economy, or some such. These guys have as much to do with the Mexican economy as I do . . . But then when they attempt to congratulate his son, he says well, you made an error there. They look at Connie as if he had two heads.

Back to Rodeo. Val has the first dance with Bobby. He looks like he is flinging her around like a rag doll. She reels away afterward, barely able to stand. The audience boos.

Back to the restaurant. Connie reveals that it's a terrible shame, but his son is a drug addict. Enter son!

Val now dances with Morgan. I detect hardly any difference, but she seems to think it's better.

Mili is eating a midnight snack in the kitchen when Michael Jackson (Hugo) comes in. He shows her a map and says he's going to teach her about Jamaica. She asks where's horchata? Both are drinks . . . ha ha. Anyway, he wants to take her there for their honeymoon. This gives her the shudders, as she realizes she's going to have to sleep with creepy.

At the restaurant dinner table, an awkward moment: one of the thugs asks Alex if he wants a cigar. He said he doesn't smoke. In fact, he's really into clean living. If he wins the prize, he's going to donate his money to the cause of anti smoking and anti drug promotions. Well, maybe there's a mistake they ask--what about your addiction? Huh? Well, your dad's been telling us . . .

Back home, Connie is pouring a drink and talking to himself: Stupid, stupid stupid. Alex comes in and asks for an explanation. Connie calls him a mocoso de porqueria, or a snotnosed brat from the trashpile. Mili hears the yelling from the kitchen. Connie says Alex was stupid--he had been talking about Luci, not about Alex. Alex looks angry and says no I heard right--you did it so I wouldn't win the prize. Connie stands up and says hit me, hit me, hit me. Connie then hits Alex. Mili runs in and tries to intervene. Just then, Alex was striking back at Connie and accidentally hits Mili. Both are stricken with remorse and try to help her. Connie is horrified and reveals that part of himself that we all hate to love, as he sees his daughter is injured.
Mili actually tells Alex the he shouldn't treat his father this way. This is interesting, as she has been shown to talk frequently about how much she hates her unknown father. But Mili also has a belief in loving one's family. She is conflicted.

Pilar shows up.

Rocky does more dancing and jokes about taking Val on Dancing for the Wedding of Your Dreams. She says she will keep her word and pay for dinner. He says he only wants her presence.

Over at the master bedroom, Luci asks Connie why Braulio is packing suitcases. Connie is going to Brazil. With his lover? No, on business.

More hilarity: Morgan and Val have a candlelight dinner in the back yard. Morgan keeps switching jackets when he is serving as waiter and when he is the guest at his own dinner.

Connie is in bed with Andrea and they light cigarettes. He wants her to come to Brazil. No, she says she's going to visit a cousin in Merida. A likely story.

Alex complains to Damien about his father. Tell it to someone who cares!
He then thanks Andrea for warning him about Connie. She is using it to show him what a truth teller she is. She now tells him to fight for Mili.

Soco goes to collect groceries from Chamuco at the gate. She sees an old man waiting outside. She is impactada. Can this be her Frenchy?

Damien tells Andrea that he doesn't think it was just chance that Alex went to the restaurant. Ya think?

The servants eat and plan the campout. They tease Braulio, 'cause he doesn't want to go. Not refined enough.

In the girls dorm, Mili looks sad. Why? Because of the honeymoon to Jamaica. The girls ask her if she doesn't want to go to Jamaica? No she doesn't want to go on a honeymoon with Creepo. Mili looks queasy again. Gloria points out the truth that Mili really loves "the guapito," or Alex. The girls want to invite Alex to the party, but Mili is adamantly against it.

Soco talks to Horacio: She has just seen the past . . .

Braulio brings tea to Luci. She wants whiskey. He says he'll give her whiskey later if she helps him with his niece. He has some proposal to help her too--to do something to Connie--not kill him, but disarm him? All will be revealed later, I suppose.

Avances: Alex wants to go to the party, and he announces in front of everyone that he loves Mili. Pilar hears.

I’ve been yelling a lot at the TV lately and it’s made it’s way to my comments. Hopefully they’ll amuse rather than distract.

Episode 78:

We start with yesterday’s portion as Cami begins to set up her praying area (complete with an image of the Virgin) in her new prison – I mean home for wayward girls room – and Santi comes in to say g’bye. He tells her he’ll leave some money behind so if she needs anything, all she has to do is ask. Cami says it’s not necessary and Mr. Condescending tells her that he knows she doesn’t approve of what they’re doing, but he hopes she’ll use this time to return to God. Cami gives him a great look that sends virtual arrows through him. He asks why she’s looking at him like that (‘cause you’re a condescending hypocrite you dumbass!) and she tells him she can’t avoid it. He asks if she thinks he’s doing something against her and she tells him she doesn’t know him anymore. He says he doesn’t know her either and asks what happened to her beliefs in the church and the laws of God and she tells him that God granted man free will. He replies that it was under certain rules that she’s well aware of. He says that man (Ric) coaxed her with his lechery and she tells him it wasn’t lechery, and that she doesn’t want to think that he’s helping her dad hide her from Ric out of jealousy (‘cause he is). Santi says he only wants to help her find the truth and she asks him if he means hers or his. He says the truth is only one (yeah, that he’s an asshat) and he can’t understand how she can be so charmed with a man like that. She says she doesn’t expect him to understand and it’s not worth arguing about. He’s doing what he thinks is best and so will she. Santi worries and she explains she doesn’t plan to run away, but she will never stop loving Ric, and one day they will be together, in this life or the next (Paradise or reincarnation? Hard to say).

Justo converses with the midwife (who looks very shifty and uncomfortable) and tells her that Cami says she’s about 3 months pregnant (I also thought she said a little more than 2 the last time, but it’s been a few days since her conversation w/Justo and Santi so I guess that’s how they’re doing the math) and asks her to look in on his daughter and tells her that Santi’s mom, who is also a midwife, will come visit and will probably assist in the birth (as far as one can predict when the little munchkins will choose to drop in on you). He pays her and Santi tries to do it for him. Justo argues that Cami is his responsibility (about friggin’ time!). Auxiliadora (funny name, it means auxiliary, or giver of aid) tells them not to worry, as she’ll watch over Cami. Al escorts her out and gives her a handy bribery-sized money pouch in exchange for her services to HIM. She is to report to him every 2 mos in SF. She is to keep quiet about that.

Juliana brings Cami a throw rug and asks if she needs anything. Cami says no thanks, but wants to know what their instructions were. Juli tells her they were told to care for her ‘cause she’s preggers and that she’s not to leave the place. She says fine and Juli mentions there’s a little orchard/garden patch where she can walk and get some fresh air. Cami asks if there is a book in the house she can read to distract herself. Juli mentions the house used to belong to a clergyman and that he left books. She can bring them tomorrow. Camila thanks her. (I wonder if she’ll find any juicy gossip in them about Jorge’s machinations...one can hope) and Juli exits. Cami now tells herself she will obey her dad’s rules and not reveal herself. She then prays to the Virgin that her child is born healthy and that if Ric is alive, he has the joy of meeting it. She kisses the watch Ric left her.

Over at the Coralina brothel (LP got the madam to rent it to them while Ric recoups), Mario insists he should be the one to go to SF. Ric says no way, it’s too dangerous. LP offers to go since nobody knows her. Ric is worried El Chino might have been arrested (he did kill the captain of the guards) and people saw her with him. He’d go himself but he can’t even move. MMM repeats he should go and Ric reminds him he said NO. LP is pleased that at least his mood is back! Ric asks Pablo if he’s afraid and he replies he wasn’t at the scuffle and hardly anyone saw him while he was in town. Ric assures him that if he follows Ric’s instructions, nothing will happen to him. Pablo says he trust him. Mario says the boat to Veracruz will leave tomorrow and Ric asks them all to leave him to finish his letter. He writes: “I don’t know if you continue as a serf to Lis, but Pablo has the money to buy your freedom and will give it to your dad. And you, my love: have faith. As soon as I am able, I will go find you. I will be careful, I promise. And this time, without any pretext or excuse, I will bring you with me.”

On to today: Ursula laughs at the palace courtyard and asks Mani if Ascanio kept the appointment. Mani says yes, out of respect to Ursu. Ursu asks if they’re seeing each other and Mani says she ran into him on the street. Ursu says yeah right! Then she asks Mani if they’ve done it yet. Mani’s offended and asks how she can think of such a thing. Ursu says if Mani doesn’t she’s a fool. She then asks Mani for a favor. She knows “Lancaster” (aka Foreman, the sleazy English Corsair) was a friend of Al and she wants Mani to get his address. Mani doubts her father will give it to her and Ursula explains she’s not supposed to ask for it, she’s supposed to looks for it amongst dad’s things. Mani says she wouldn’t dare and Ursu threatens to tell Al that Mani’s got a romance with Miller boy if she doesn’t help her. Mani hopes she’s bluffing, but Ursu says she’s bored and a public flogging might be fun. Just then, Ascanio arrives and tells the doorman Santi’s expecting him. Ursu spies him and they exchange pleasantries. As he’s off to see Santi, Ursu tells him no to disappear. She then taunts Mani saying Ascanio has a nice amount of flesh; so a few lashes shouldn’t kill him. Mani agrees to help, but she tells Ursu she’ll pay for this someday. Our little girl is growing up =)

As the sugar to make up for how annoying he’s being; we are treated to a nude Santi in his bed (well, with a sheet over him) getting the last few acupuncture needles removed from his back. Ascanio’s in the room and Santi asks what he thinks. Ascanio’s impressed and Santi points out that it’s helping. His leg hurts less and he’s walking better. He turns over to reveal his fussy bear chest and legs (kibbles and bits discreetly tucked under the sheet). Ascanio apologizes for not coming sooner, but he’s been looking for new digs. Santi asks why and Ascanio says he doesn’t want to take advantage of Justo any longer and that he’s also looking for new work (and perhaps he’s afraid he’ll deck him for being such an asshat to Cami). The doc (they call him Master) tells Santi to rest and he’ll see him tomorrow. Santi dismisses the valet and Ascanio asks after Cami. Santi says she was obviously sad. Ascanio asks if they think they did the right thing. Santi says there was no other choice; they had to take precautions in case Ric survives and tries to come get her. Ascanio nods, but we can tell he’s not really convinced.

Over at the Coralina brothel, Ric hands Pablo the letter and tells him not to do anything that occurs to him in his head (really, that’s how he said it, the poor man has a fever), but only what Ric told him. He is to go to Ric’s old rental place to look for Jim. If she’s not there, Pablo shouldn’t look for her, but got to Justo’s place (I can already see a big hole in this plan) without going through the main plaza. He asks Pablo to please take care of the money (yeah Ric, rub it in how the poor guy was almost killed guarding your loot the last time). Pablo says not to worry, and Ric tells him to go with God. Ric turns to MMM and says that even talking exhausts him. Mario tells him he’ll get better. Ric asks “When?” Weeks go by and he feels useless. He doesn’t know how Cami is. What if she thinks he’s dead? He falls asleep. Outside the room, Pablo puts the money in his satchel and LP mentions that they’ve spent weeks together, but haven’t talked even once. She knows it’s not Pablo’s fault, but hers since she’s afraid he’ll think she’s telling him lies. He says he doesn’t think anything and she says she doesn’t want to speak ill of anyone or blame anyone, but life’s sick and everyone knows the good and the bad they’ve suffered. She says they’ll talk when he gets back and if he believes her, great. If not, they’ll say goodbye. She hands him a satchel and Pablo leaves shaking his head. He’s clearly uncomfortable with the situation.

“Una Semana Despues” (A Week Later) flashes across the screen. Juli tells Cami that Doña Auxiliadora’s there to see her. Cami says she feels fine, but reconsiders and decides to see her. Aux introduces herself and says Cami’s color is good, but she’s a little thin. Cami says she’s been trying to eat well because of the baby, but she hasn’t had any appetite. Aux asks how far along she is and Cami says she thinks 3 ½ months. Aux asks if this is her first because 1^st timers always get the count wrong. Aux tells her she’s leaving her some herbs for tea. Cami says thanks, but she already has some herbs that were given to her from another midwife and that’s what she’s taking. Aux asks if she doesn’t think hers are any good (they look similar, but you can never tell) and Cami replies politely she’s sure they’re good, but she’d like to finish Ofi’s first. She mentions that Ofi has been like a mother to her. I have a bad feeling about this woman... I can totally see Al holding on to the kid in case Ric shows up.

We join a procession outside the church for the wedding of Liz and Al. They exchange vows and she’s on the verge of tears. Al kisses her and she quickly turns away. They now enter the church (This is strange ‘cause you usually end with the part inside the church and then leave. Maybe ‘cause it’s those two they are doing it a$$ backwards) and everyone goes inside looking quite uncomfortable. Sofia is nowhere in sight, but the rest of the Mancera clan (including the new additions) are there. There’s a lovely children’s choir singing in Latin.

Over at the mill, Jim asks Ascanio if he knows anything about Cami. He says he heard from Lazaro that Justo heard she’s well. Jim feels terrible that they can’t even see her. She asks if he thinks Ric died and he says he hopes not. She agrees for both Ric and Cami’s sakes since they love each other.

On his sickbed Ric tells Mario he’s sick of being in bed. Mario warns that the “matasanos” (it literally means killer of the healthy, but it’s usually used to mean a doctor) said too much strain could re-open the wounds. Ric doesn’t care and asks MMM to help him. Mario says no way, do it yourself. Ric manages to sit up and put both feet on the ground. MMM rejoices and tells him how proud he is. Ric asks how long the doc thinks it will take him to heal. MMM warns he won’t like it but Ric again doesn’t care. It will take about 2 months. Ric thinks the doc’s crazy. MMM reminds him that he received two fatal wounds that would have killed anyone and he should be thanking God he’s alive. Ric says he’s thankful but he’s gotta get his wife damn it! Mario tells him to suck it up because his wounds haven’t scarred properly and he still needs to be able to stand and gain some strength ‘cause he was left quite “fregado” (in bad shape, though it normally refers to dishwashing – maybe the scraping with the brillo pads has something to do with the “bad shape” expression). And for him to be able to pick up a sword and handle it like he used to will take a lot of time. Ric replies he has no time and starts chewing bread. Mario is so cute. He’s like a hyper puppy trying to avoid cabin fever.

Liz is in her boudoir as Fran helps her get ready for her wedding night. She tells Fran she’s scared and Fran says she knows but there’s no turning back. We get a little Sex Ed moment as Lis asks what she should do and Fran tells her to do nothing and just let him do everything. She asks, “what if he hurts me” and Fran explains that she’s heard the man always hurts the woman the first time. Lis asks “so then?” Fran says to suck it up ‘cause that’s the way God made us. She puts the robe on Lis and tells her it’s time. Lis asks for what and Fran tells her not to play dumb, Al asked for her a while ago. Lis asks why he doesn’t come to her and Fran tells her to stop asking stupid questions ‘cause she belongs to her husband and must do whatever he wants. Lis tries to stall asking for her cane and Fran gets it and rushes her out of the room. Ah, the perils of being raised by your spinster aunt before they started teaching science class...

Al is in his bedroom wearing his own bathrobe when Fran brings in the terrified Lis. She leaves closing the door behind her without even saying goodbye. Lis tells Al she’s nervous. He says there’s nothing to be worried about, removes her robe and lays her on the bed. He removes his robe and jumps on the bed. We are mercifully spared any additional flesh in this scene. Al starts pawing her and telling her how beautiful she is and how much he likes her pale soft skin. Liz looks like she’s ready to hurl and he tells her she’s his wife and there’s no place for modesty in that room. He starts kissing her torso and she tells him it’s a sin. He tells her he warned her she would learn to bring him pleasure. She says she doesn’t want to. He tells her he wants her to enjoy him and to let him enjoy her. She says she’s cold and asks why they don’t throw on a sheet. He says he wants to see her and have her let him. He also wants her to “see” him with her hands. She says he can’t force her and he slaps her so hard she falls off the bed. She screams “not like this” as he picks her up and throws her on the bed. She crawls off the bed and tries to run away, but he blocks her way. He tells her he wants her to give him pleasure and throws her on the bed. We are spared the rest as they cut to commercial.

Now for the spoonful of sugar. At chez Justo, Vasco walks down the steps to the kitchen to get some water. Ines is in her jammies making tea for Paco. Vasco tells her he wants them to be a couple again. He tells her he needs her and asks if she no longer feels anything for him. She walks away and says she needs him too and that she still loves him, but she’s afraid of suffering again. He says the way they’re living they’re already suffering. He sees her everyday; so beautiful, so attentive and smiling to everyone except him. She’s worried he’ll go back to his old ways and he says it won’t happen, because he’s starting to fall in love with her. We now see them in their room as a new song plays (I think we may have heard it when Ascanio kissed Mani). She’s a little shy at first, but they both exchange a lot of come hither looks and we get to see a great deal of both. Ines blows out the candle. The audience collectively smiles knowing what’s coming...

It’s the next day. Poor Lis sits at her dressing table as Fran sets her hair. Lis tells Fran it was horrible. Not only did he hurt her, but he humiliated her. Fran says the worst is over. Fran just sucks at this comfort thing! Lis asks why women must endure so much shame and humiliation. Fran tells her she’ll get used to it and Lis says she never will. Fran asks if she thinks it would have been any different with Ric. Lis says of course, Ric was good and sweet and she loved him. She now wants to talk about the child, but Al is at the door. Lis tries to cling to Fran but she pries Lis off and leaves her to her rapist – I mean husband. Al comes in with a rose and asks for forgiveness if he was too rough. He asks Lis when she wants to leave on their honeymoon. She says she thought about it and maybe it’s better not to go. He takes a seat behind her and asks why. She says since she can’t see, it’s probably better if she stays in places she knows. Here’s something almost as disturbing as what happened the night before: for the rest of the conversation, Al strokes her cheeks, ears, etc with the rose. Always from behind her and constantly switching sides. You can see the terror in her face as she tries to figure out where he is at any given time. He says fine, but perhaps later on they can take a trip to the capital and go to the theater, to concerts, stroll as he describes the streets, the coffee shops, would she like that? She says she doesn’t know. He tells her to calm down and promises he’ll be gentler next time. He kisses her and throws the rose on the dressing table. Once he’s gone, she wipes her mouth and says she will never like. She begs God to give him a heart attack so he’ll drop dead. Just like her dad...That’s the way he died isn’t it?

Santi comes into Rita’s room and she asks how his sessions are going with the Master (acupuncturist). He says they’re going well and asks about Ana. Rita says she’s at the nursery and he notices her crib isn’t there. Rita says Ursu suggested Ana Maria sleep in the kids’ room with Tita and the nannies. He points out they are of different customs and Rita asks if they can’t enjoy the kindnesses they have now just because they used to be poor. He says he just wants his daughter to grow up with them and not her nannies. Rita says it’s not like she spends no time with her, and if she can get a little help what does he care. He tells her he doesn’t like her abandoning their child to dedicate herself to frivolities. He asks how much time she now spends fixing her hair and dressing herself that way. She says she needs to look a certain way or people will think she’s his maid instead of his wife. He says he sometimes wonders if he made the right choice moving to that house. She tells him not to start. He says he feels that she wants to forget where they came from. His mom says she hardly ever goes to visit her or Justo. Rita says she does visit, but she has to also spend time with Sofia and other society ladies so people won’t think they are rude. He now asks what’s the deal with her wanting to learn how to ride. She says it’s a common form of entertainment among women of class. He tells her she should entertain herself with their daughter. She tells him again that Ana Maria is fine; and if he’s so worried maybe he should entertain himself with her since she’s his daughter too. He tells her it’s her duty as the mother. He says he also won’t allow her to adopt Ursula’s manner. Methinks the boy thinks he knows what everyone should be doing... He slams the door and Rita primly strolls to the door herself.

Al sees Rita and Ursu and tells Rita how elegant she looks on that horse. Rita thanks him and Ursu says the only problem is she hasn’t learned how to fall with grace. Al offers to join them in one of their rides. They say it would be great and Ursu complains that Mani has forgotten about her. Al says he’ll send her over. The girls ride off.

In Jorge’s office, he asks Al why they need to organize a dinner. Al says Lis is hurt because Sofia wasn’t a “madrina” and didn’t even show up at the wedding. Jorge tells him she needs to get over it. She’s the one that declared war on Sofi when she refused to sell her Cami. Al says it’s the more reason why they should have a dinner and smooth things over. It will also show people that Lis is welcome in the palace.

We see that Jim is now a waitress at the tavern. She starts to bus a table and sees Santi walking to the municipal building out of the corner of her eye. She makes a face like she smelled something foul (and I don’t just mean his hair or his scarf). You can see the hate in her eyes.

Inside the building, Santi greets the people in the hall and tells them he’ll be right with them. He runs into Marcelino and asks if Ascanio’s in. Marcelino takes him to the private office and Santi tells him he can go. Marcelino’s a little afronted, but he says of course. Let me know if you need anything. It looks like Ascanio has been hired by Santi as an independent auditor. Santi asks how it’s going and Ascanio says he just started. He says he asked for his help because he considers him a friend and someone to be trusted. Ascanio says he’s grateful. Santi mentions people pay a tithe to the church and a lot of taxes. He knows part of it goes to the crown, but he wants to know what happens to the rest since he hasn’t seen much improvement in the town. Ascanio points out there often is corruption among government officials. Especially if his father allows it... Santi says he still wants to know. Ascanio asks if he wants him to spy and Santi says no, just as a friend he wants to know what’s going on. Ascanio warns he might find something Santi doesn’t like. Santi says he’ll decide that. He knows they don’t agree on many things, but this is for the good of the people (and Ascanio may well find proof of the caravan robberies, or at least the spiffy new fake seals). Santi asks about Mani and Ascanio says please, “do you think I’d ever be able to marry her?” Santi points out that he went from blacksmith to heir apparent. Ascanio says it’s different, he knows where HE came from. Santi says he does as well. Independently of what he’s told Santi (the whole killing the guy who raped his sister) he’s a good man, and his friend. He might give him a hand...Commercial break with a scary shot of Al.

Sofia visits with Ofelia and asks if she still disapproves Santi’s recognition. Ofi says he looks happy and Rita’s thrilled. She has Ofi make her dresses just like Ursu’s with the same cut, ruffles, etc. She’s even gotten into horseback riding. She misses her granddaughter. Sofi says if Mohamed doesn’t come to the mountain...Ofi says she couldn’t go to the palace. Sofi wants to talk about Cami’s sudden trip. Ofi says she was very sad and SF brought her bad memories. Sofi asks what convent she went to and Ofi says one in the capital, Saint...Saint something or other. Sofi asks if she’s lying. Maybe she went to meet Ric. Ofi says they haven’t heard from him and she thinks he’s probably dead.

Over on the fields, Ursu yells to Rita to keep up. Rita complains the horse won’t obey her and Ursu reminds her it’s not a horse, but a mare. She should know that by now, pay attention.

Sofi comes over to Justo and asks if he’s been hiding from her (Ya think? Guilty conscience?). He says he’s been busy and she asks after Camila. Justo says she’s fine. Sofi says she thought they were friends and that he trusted her. She wants to know if she went looking for Ric ‘cause she doesn’t buy the convent BS. She reminds him that he knows well that if he doesn’t answer she’ll keep nagging until he does. He finally tells her Cami’s pregnant, please understand his shame. She says she can understand whatever feeling he wants (her husband and daughter aren’t exactly vestal virgins). She wants to know if they plan to get rid of the child and he says of course not! She wants to know where they sent her and he says one of Jorge’s properties, but please don’t tell him you know. Nobody can’t know! She’s shocked Jorge knows and wants Justo to tell her where it is so she can go visit. He says she knows how fond he is of her, but he simply can’t tell her. She says fine (she’s got other spies...) but what do they plan to do with the child. He says the child will live with them. She asks about Ric and he says he doesn’t know. But in case Ric survived, they’re not about to give him the kid to turn into a villain, a filibuster. They will say the kid is an orphan or something. She asks if they aren’t worried Ric will try to come back and they said that’s why they sent Cami away. His only solace is that Ric knows he’s a wanted man. If he tries to come they will catch him and hang him. Sofi points out that Ric’s not the kind of man who’s afraid of danger. That’s how he makes his living. I just knew Sofi would come into this somehow. Hopefully between her and Ofi they can help Cami get word to her hubby.

Over by the mill, Vasco and family are having a picnic. Paco asks how sailors can track the stars if they keep moving. Vasco tells him sailors know the patterns the stars follow. He asks if Ric could teach him and Vasco says there’s no need ‘cause he’s going to grow up to be a miller. Paco says nope, he wants to be a sailor so he can have a really big boat. Ursu rides by and says they look really cute. Ines bolts up and Vasco tells her to pay Ursu no mind and kisses her. Eat your heart out WhoreSula! Paco notices Rita and calls out to her. Ines holds him back as the horse looks quite skittish. Vasco calls out to Rita and she waves as she tries to stay on her horse.

Over at the Garbancillo home, Cami does her embroidery and talks to the sky. She says: “If you’re in heaven my love, please protect your child.”

Back at the palace, Ursu enjoys her tea as Mani swears she looked everywhere and found nothing about a Mr. Lancaster (nobody told her he was filed under “F” for Foreman or “P” for pirate contact or “C” for English corsair who pays them money to steal) and tells Ursu she has to believe her. Ursu says fine and nearly spits out her tea when she sees Rita coming out with her fan and parasol. Ursu comments her mom spoils her more than herself with jewels and attentions, etc. Rita gives Mani a “don’t mess my makeup” hug and kiss and tells her that Al offered to take them riding and suggests Mani should join them. Mani says sure. Rita asks about the new stepmom and Mani says she’s fine, but looks uncomfortable.

Over at the brothel, Ric sits up and manages to stand for a few seconds, but soon collapses back in the bed and bursts into tears of frustration.

On tomorrow’s episode: Al takes Ursu and Rita riding and gets her to call a race. Rita tries to bail out and Al takes a knife to her horse who starts galloping off as he laughs. We all collectively cheer!

Santi tells Justo he will notify the captain of the guard to be at the ready. I hope it’s in response to Sofi’s comment and not because they caught Pablo.
