La Fea Más Bella #128 10/19/06 We'll always have Cuernavaca...
Erasmo chooses some lighter drinking fare and drinks an orange juice. Julieta serves pancakes. He gives them to Tomas. Julieta says that Erasmo knows that she makes hotcakes on Saturdays. (Love the way she says hotcakes!) Tomas tells her that Erasmo is a little hung-over. She asks what that has to do with the hotcakes. Tomas tries to explain. They pass the pancakes back and forth between Tomas and Erasmo. Erasmo says that he wants some chilaquiles or some eggs with salsa ranchero. No, hotcakes, with lots of syrup. Tomas takes some pastries and walks out of the house. Tomas thinks it would be better for him to stay home this weekend. Julieta force feeds Erasmo. She talks about how rich they are. Erasmo squishes his face.
Fernando tells Lety that her joke was in poor taste. Lety tells Fernando that she really saw Ariel walk by, but she may have been mistaken. Fernando asks if Ariel saw them. No, he just passed by, and I may have been mistaken. The waiter brings them some fruit. They realize that they’ve never had breakfast together.
Omar and Marcia are walking together, but she wishes she had better company. He asks why she’s so concerned with Fernando when they’re in Munich! She says it would be impossible for her to stop thinking about him that Omar cannot possibly understand. Of course not, you’re being absurd! Marcia tells Omar that she doesn’t want to talk to him about Fernando. Omar says she should because he’s an expert when it comes to Fernando. Yeah, because you’re his witch-doctor! (Loving Marcia in this moment!) Marcia asks him to speak with complete honesty while looking her in the eyes, will Fernando marry her? Omar dances around the question. That’s exactly what she expected.
Meanwhile, Fernando goes on about how they’re going to forget about Marcia and everything else. Fernando wants to take Lety to a clothing store, since they didn’t bring any clothes. Lety says that she likes the clothing, but they’re not very fitting for her. They’re very fine material and she’s sure they’ll be expensive. Fernando says not to worry because he’ll buy them for her as gift. She doesn’t want to let him. She’s worried, she needs to call her parents. Fernando makes her repeat a promise to forget about everything outside of Cuernavaca. (During this incredible and marvelous weekend, I promise to forget everything.) Fernando reminds her that if she calls her house, she’ll be in trouble with Erasmo and he’ll want her to return immediately. She acquiesces resolves to forget. He rewards her with some kisses.
Erasmo stares at a picture of Lety. He says that if he knew where she was, he would go for her immediately. Julieta prays to the virgin for protection for Lety. Underneath the picture and candles is the cake topper from Erasmo and Julieta’s wedding.
Fernando and Lety look at some clothing. Fernando mentions that they need bathing suits. The saleswoman brings a bathing suit for Lety. Lety doesn’t want to try it on, but Fernando convinces her. After she walks into the dressing room, Fernando asks if they have anything more discreet. The saleswomen says that’s the most discreet that they have. Lety stands in the dressing room with the suit over her clothes. She says she can’t put the suit on. Everyone else will have beautiful bodies, and then they’re will be her. It’s impossible for her to put it on. Fernando knocks on the door and asks how it’s going. She asks him to wait. Lety begins to cry. She forgot who she is. “Lety, the ugly one!” She practically shouts several times. Fernando overhears her and asks if she’s okay. She lies and says she’s fine, but he does not look convinced.
Lety and Fernando have changed outfits. Lety really likes the clothing; she feels like a different person. Fernando says he has a pamphlet for the activities of the resort. There is a lot of activities. Lety asks if she can tell him something, he looks very nice in white. He kisses her and says that she looks very nice in white as well. They sit and talk about what activities they should try. He wants to balance energies, but Lety says she’s balanced already. What about a massage with five hands? Lety doesn’t want to be touched. Fernando comes up with an activity. She looks at him out of the corner of her eye. What will it be methinks.
Omar and Marcia are also looking at a pamphlet. Omar goes on about some castle, but Marcia doesn’t want to here it. Omar repeats that they’re in Europe and should enjoy it. Marcia says she’ll enjoy it how she wants. Omar says the only thing she ever thinks about is Fernando.
Fernando and Lety try a meditation exercise. Lety waves away the smoke and tries to look serious. Fernando whispers and asks if Lety knows what it is to silence their thoughts. Lety hushes him, and says not really. Fernando looks around at everyone else.
Marcia and Omar go on about Marcia’s jealousy. She says it’s like a torture; he tells her not to exaggerate. She says all of her problems have been because of Fernando’s lovers. Omar pokes fun at Marcia, asking if all the women of the world disappeared would she and Fernando be happy. Marcia does not laugh. She tries to get Omar to confess that Fernando is in love with someone else. Omar says that Fernando is not in love with anyone. Even me? (Nice, Omar) Marcia says that Fernando rejects her every night lately. Marcia gives another speech about her lousy relationship.
The meditation continues. Lety whispers to Fernando, but he’s sleeping. Fernando snores. The meditation guy looks upset. Fernando wakes up, making Lety laugh.
Marcia tells Omar that he’s never been in love, all of his relationships are casual. He’s never taken the time to know somebody that well. Omar says that women always want commitments. Marcia says its because needs to establish a family and have kids. Omar says that he’s free, unlike her. Nobody deceives him or kills his dreams. Marcia says Omar can do with his life what he likes, but she has a life with Fernando. She tells Omar to leave them alone, in peace.
Fernando and Lety were thrown out of the meditation seminar. Fernando doesn’t understand how something that’s supposed to be so relaxing can be so much work. Lety makes a joke and Fernando thinks she’s calling him neurotic. He says he has a cure for neurosis. They run through the resort and come to an outdoor theatre. She stands in the middle of the stage. She once acted a role, Alicia in the Marvelous Country. Her mom helped her study and made her costume. The teacher accepted that she would play the lead role, but she overheard the director say that she couldn’t play Alicia because she wasn’t marvelous and was very ugly. Fernando apologizes and tells her that the director was a fool, she is marvelous. Lety decides to sing him a song from the play. He tries to stop her, but she insists. It starts out really weak, but turns out okay. (Just so you know, this is Aqui Estare, one of Angelica Vale’s songs). Fernando applauses and says he never knew she could sing so well. She tells Fernando it’s his turn. He says he doesn’t know how to act, dance or sing – the time with the megtron was very impulsive. He goes to the middle after some convincing and says that he was in a play once. They play charades to guess which play it was. She can’t get it and guesses Pinocchio and Peter Pan. Nope, El Soldito de Plomo. He hops around on one leg. They kiss in the middle. Not twenty feet away Ariel makes out with his girlfriend…wife…girlfriend Ariel’s cell phone rings and they leave. Fernando and Lety almost follow, but she wants to go the other direction.
Omar and Marcia stand next a lake, near an artist. Omar asks if she really wants to know if Fernando wants to marry her. She’s not so enthusiastic. He talks to her about how she and Fernando grew up together. His parents have wanted this wedding for a long time. It will be an union between the Villaroels and Mendiolas of Conceptos. She asks him if he’s saying that her marriage is basically a business arrangement.
Fernando and Lety decide to try a martial art. Lety does a roll instead of a flip. She hurts her head and can’t move. Ariel stands behind them, still talking on the phone.
Marcia tells Omar that Ariel suggested that Fernando proposed to her to secure her vote for the presidency of Conceptos. She asks if Omar can confirm her brother’s suspicions Omar looks over the water.
Fernando helps Lety up from the ground. The master demonstrates another flip. Fernando excuses himself and Lety saying that he has a bad back. They walk away and class continues.
Ariel and his woman pass the martial arts class. He’s going on about business and money. He’s losing a lot of money! The woman wants him to stop talking about business. He’s complains about Fernando and the upcoming big meeting. The girl insists he get of the phone. She says she’s going to go have fun by herself. He gets back on the phone and walks away from her.
Next Lety and Fern and try and Indian cleansing ceremony. The Indian guy asks Lety to take off her robe. Lety says she’ll do it inside. Fernando gets steamed and walks past. Ariel and his woman look on at the events. She wants to participate so Ariel asks if they can come into the ceremony. The Indian tells him that, unfortunately, the ceremony is full. The phone rings again. Lety and Fernando sit in the steam room. Fernando says that this ceremony doesn’t only cleanse the body, but the spirit. Lety says she’s afraid. Fernando says that this ceremony is perfect for her. It will purify her. He asks her to take off the bathrobe. She does. An Indian in the dark says that this is a rebirth. Lety and Fernando hold hands. Fernando begins to hyperventilate. (It took me a moment to figure out what that sound was.) The Indian man says it’s time to lose their pride, lies, envy and other bad things. Fernando can’t breath and passes out. He yells and runs out. Lety follows, bathrobe back on. Fernando doesn’t understand, this is the seventh time he’s done this ceremony and every time he does it this same thing happens, he asfixiates. They walk to a new location. Ariel and his chick walk by again right after they’ve left. Ariel’s phone rings. He asks the person on the line to call him tomorrow, but the person says something interesting about money that makes Ariel listen and stalk off.
Marcia asks why Omar doesn’t want to answer her. She asks him again if Fernando proposed in order to not lose Conceptos. Omar walks away. My heart broke a little when I saw Marcia’s reaction. Omar remembers a conversation he had with Fernando about marrying Marcia and maintaining a relationship with Lety to preserve the company. Omar tells Marcia that Ariel is filling her head with doubts. Omar says that Fernando is not capable of doing what she’s accusing, but he can’t look her in the eye. She has another question. Does Fernando want to live like him, Omar, free and without commitment? Silence.
Fernando asks why Lety won’t swim. She says she doesn’t like to be in her bathing suit, but she has her feet in the pool. Fernando jumps into the pool. Ariel walks behind Lety, but doesn’t recognize her. Fernando waves for Lety to come in. Lety protests that she doesn’t know how to swim. He says it’s shallow. She stills afraid. He swims over to her, but changes his mind and goes into the pool. Later in the evening, Fernando walks and tells Lety how happy he is. All of his happiness is thanks to her. They stop on the deck of the resort and kiss. Ariel walks onto the porch arguing with his woman. He looks directly at Lety and Fernando.
Was it a trick of the camera? Are Fernando and Lety really caught?
Happiness never lasts; is it over for our happy couple?
Will Marcia ever move on from Fernando and find a guy who really loves her?

Omar reminded Marcia that she and Fernando were practically brought up together, and that the families had pressed this matrimony all along.
This was fun but I wish they'd made it to bed.
My favorite part of this episode was weirdly enough, Omar. I think he achieved a little more depth and we got to see that even he has a conflict about everything that's happening. Plus, we find out that all of his casual relationships are really just a way not to get hurt. I still think he's a punk, but at least he has some layers.
I didn't understand why Fernando was so anxious to see the resort instead of being with Lety in private. Just part of the story I guess to kill time until the good stuff.
I get the feeling that Ariel (who I can't stand!) was looking right through them!
Fernando looked pretty darn good swimming! I kept hoping Lety would just jump in, clothes and all!
I felt so sorry for Lety in the dressing room. It made me cry for her!
Thanks so much for the great recap!
I enjoyed the Ariel scenes. I'm hoping he wasn't really looking in the direction we think we was. :)
Omar is Omar...& Marcia if she has that many doubts do a real "Magnum" on Fernando instead of doing it on the cheap with Alicia.
I was glad that Omar was beginning to level with Marcia. She needs all the confirmation she can get so she can realize Fern's not the man she should want to marry.
As for Fern, it is so hard not to like him when he is so gentle and loving with Lety. I think a good point was made about the cleaning ceremony. It seem he bolted right about when the word "lies" was mentioned. Fern, Fern, Fern....
My heart also went out to Lety when she was crying. Amazing how deep our wounds can be. So, much of her fun was cancelled out because she has incorporated into her sense of self all the mean judgments others passed on her. I would love her character to be able to heal these wounds and really begin to shine. She has so many wonderful qualities. At least we got to hear her beautiful voice.
As for Ariel, man if I were a writer I'd opt for banning him from appearing again. What a pain in the butt. I felt sorry for the woman with him. But face it, even if he wasn't ignoring her by being on the phone all the time, she'd still have had a lousy vacation because..well, she's with Ariel.
As a bonus, there'd be less chance of running into someone they know if they stayed in their room. :)
There is a very important scene in Betty, la Fea where Armando (Fernando) has someone sing Besame to Betty (Lety). It's much farther into the novela (even beyond where they are in Mexico now) and it was a pivotal scene in the relationship. When it gets to that point, I'll let you know. If you must know more, you may, of course, e-mail me. :-)
