La Fea Más Bella #130 10/23/06 "Por no perder Conceptos"

My esteemed President, Here are your instructions, so you may continue with your routine of horror with Lety. I left you the cards that you should put on the little monster’s desk every morning with its respective gift. Don’t forget because I won’t be there to remind you! Writing these cards was harder than ever because with the others, at least you had told me what had happened the night before. So these cards have neutral messages and feelings along with the cheap poetry that fascinates her; it’s poetry for ugly women, ugly women in love.
The little monster will be in heaven because of Marcia’s absence. Of course, she’ll probably want you to spend every night with her. This is fine, but be careful. Alicia will be following you, and if she finds anything suspicious Marcia will cancel the marriage and that’s the last thing we would want. You must marry her no matter what!
Fernandito, keep the love alive! Drink some whiskey, and if you get sufficiently inspired, go to bed with her. Yes, I can see the face you are making, but you don’t seem to detest going to bed with her as much as you did before. Don’t rest until you’ve gone to bed with her; at least once. Just so you know, you can’t take her to my apartment again. Every doorman there made fun of how ugly the woman was that you brought to my apartment the other day.
Do not neglect her, because Tomás Mora is still after Lety and Conceptos. I don’t want to come back to the news that you left her in his hands because that would be the same as giving him the company.
When you think about how horrible it is to be with her, remember this: “I kiss Lety, so I won’t lose Conceptos! I make love to Lety, so I won’t lose Conceptos!” Think that with every kiss, every terrible caress, you are making sure that Lety is not playing a dirty game with us.
Finally, remember that, more than ever, you must be extra special to her to make sure that she will doctor the books for the upcoming board meeting. If you see that she is hesitant to do this, close your eyes, and bring yourself closer to her. There’s no one happier than an ugly woman after making love.
My esteemed President, I know that you’ll be sick after reading these instructions, but think about this: this hell won’t last forever. You’ll once again be a happy man, surrounded by beautiful women, when she gives back the company.
Cheer up, Mr. President!
Sincerely,
Omar Carvajal

Lety asks the man why he looks at her so profoundly and who he is. He says he looks at her that way because her heart called to him. Why did she run from him? Because she doesn’t know him and he made her nervous. Why is he here? It’s her fault he’s following her, not his. “How do you know?” she asks. “You told me.” Lety doesn’t understand how she could have told him anything, since she doesn’t know him, or does she? No, she doesn’t. Her energy told him that they know each other. Don’t you trust me? Why don’t you accept what her heart is telling her. Because her heart is full of fear. He tells her that her fear is full of guilt. The love that you feel for that man is honest, sincere and clean, but in front of you two is a woman in front of her wedding dress who cannot put it on. You fell in love with him without thinking it would be returned, because you think you’re ugly and that has always been a problem in your life. Lety thanks him for the statue and attempts to leave. He holds her and says that he needs to tell her something. It’s his obligation. His name is Jorge Flores. He’s a clairvoyant (a “seer”)who can feel sadness and happiness of all people when he sees them. Right now he sees a group of children playing with a red bag. (Flashback to the scene with the kids in Fernando’s office) Lety remembers Fernando’s red bag! There’s a yellow envelope inside. Lety almost interrupts to say the bag really had… No, Jorge interrupts. The important thing is the yellow envelope. In it are papers where your name is written many times. It’s full of dark feelings. He says his name again. Lety says that she’s afraid. Jorge tells her not to be afraid. She needs to have courage to face the circumstances of her life. She’ll confront these in the yellow envelope. She asks what it’s about. He says that she can tell him when she sees him again. You’re a good woman; you have profound eyes. You have to be strong, strong! Julieta calls for Lety. She asks where she ran off to. Julieta notices the saint, but does not ask where Lety got it. Lety is still very confused. Erasmo suggest they go home.

Before the work the next day, Fernando checks out a flower stand. He picks up some sunflowers but asks the clerk to help him find something more special. The clerk points out a very large, very colorful bouquet. Luckily Fernando says no. (Thank goodness!) Next the clerk points out a display of roses. Fernando decides that he just wants one white rose. The clerk can’t believe that’s what he wants.

Lety goes to work and tries to find a place for her saint. She sets it right in front of the drawing that Eduardo drew for her. She thinks about what Jorge Flores told her and how he knew so much about her. She wonders about the yellow envelope.

Fernando walks into the office. PM hands him an envelope from a business called “Sum”. PM is at work on time? It’s about the budget. He puts it in the briefcase. (Did anyone actually see him take it home?) He tries to explain its purpose to PM, but leaves instead. PM and Fernando wish each other to have a good day.

Lety asks the cuartel about the red bag that was in Fernando’s bag. How could they forget? Fernando told them that it had Omar’s “lab samples” but it really had Alicia’s jewels. She asks if anyone has ever mentioned it again. Lola says no, why? She remembers the clairvoyants’ words. Lety asks them if they saw a yellow envelope. Sara asks why this interests her so much. She tells them about the psychic who told her a lot of things, but they weren’t important. Lola asks for the story. Lety thinks some more about what Jorge said to her. She says that he just told her some useless stuff. Fernando walks through the common area. Alicia makes her entrance, bright blue “dress” and all. She asks Fernando if he notices that the cuartel is not working. Sara bites back. She says that Alicia is just jealous because they’re more productive. Wow! Sara’s boobs are rivaling Alicia’s today! Lola mentions that Alicia was at the Only for Women show. Fernando whips his head around to look at Alicia. She starts to say that she wasn’t there to look at the men, only to follow Fernando. He gets mad and asks if she was there looking for him. She says no and tries to change her story, but excuses herself instead. She shuffles off, wiggling her way back to her desk.

Fernando and Lety walk into his office. Fernando asks if Lety knew that Alicia was in the theatre. Lety freaks out and thinks that Alicia knows about their whole weekend together. Fernando calms her. Lety excuses herself, but Fernando tells her to wait. He found something in the street and he thinks it belongs to her. He slowly brings the rose up. Lety is thrilled. He says that she’s just like a white rose. She’s sincere; she’s pure and she’s very beautiful. After this speech he asks for Lety’s pardon in his thoughts. He can’t terminate his engagement with Marcia. He has to marry her. (Fernando, you’re hot, but you really are an ass). Lety smiles at him and thanks him.

Luigi makes his grand entrance. He’s back from Germany and he has presents. Alicia rushes over to him. She runs, but somehow the boobies don’t move. That is one hell of a contraption she’s wearing. She mentions his new coat. He spins for her. Luigi asks how everything went while he was gone, but before she can answer, Irmita comes into the room. She brings his dog. He bought his dog a bunch of gifts! Luigi presents Alicia with a stuffed bunny rabbit. He says it’s a joke. Luigi gives Irmita a stuffed soccer lion. He tells her that he missed her the whole time he was in Germany. The cuartel comes in and looks at Irmita’s gift. Luigi tells the cuartel not to touch it. They’ll contaminate it! Sara says that she thought that Luigi would come back with a better attitude. Luigi says I really do like you guys…as long as you’re far away. Alicia says that he’s going to work with the cuartel from now on. She tells Luigi that Fernando converted the cuartel into a production team. He’s horrified.

Lety and Fernando talk about Cristina and the upcoming festival. Fernando says they need to treat Cristina really well. Luigi enters the office in a fuss. He wants to know why Fernando allowed the cuartel to produce the underwear commercial. The cuartel follows and says that Alicia was the one who told him. Fernando explains that he had no choice and he adds that the commercial turned out really well. Luigi throws a hissy fit. He’s not David Copperfield! He couldn’t be in two places at once! He pardons Fernando. Luigi advises Irmita to make sure the cuartel doesn’t tell anyone that the commercial was left to them. If he hears anyone talking about it, he’ll resign. Fernando doesn’t want to hear it. He tries to pet Luigi’s dog. Alicia wiggles into the office and is immediately told to leave by Fernando. Fernando tells Luigi to go get the check that Fernando paid him. Lety adds that she signed it. Luigi doesn’t understand why he returned to get yelled at. He leaves in the fuss. The cuartel turns to leave the office. Fernando asks the cuartel not to say anything more about the commercial. They need to have discretion. Lety and Fernando laugh at the antics.

Fernando goes into Luigi’s office and greets Cristina Rivapalacios. She hands him her presentation. It was presented with much care. Luigi wants to create more problems. He and Fernando have a conversation about the Bella Life commercial. Luigi wants to know if Fernando has a production team. Luigi sarcastically asks if it is acceptable for him to handle the whole thing.

Lety’s phone rings. It’s Fernando. Fernando asks her to bring him the yellow envelope. She stutters and he repeats that he needs the yellow envelope that’s in his office. She opens his briefcase and finds two yellow envelopes. Jorge Flores’s voice is heard over the scene. My heart rate just doubled and my eyes have already started to water.

Back to Fernando in Luigi’s office. Fernando likes her presentation, but wants a few changes. Cristina says she will do whatever he wants. Marcia calls Fernando’s cell phone. Luigi points out that she’s the woman that Fernando is going to marry. Fernando blows it off like it’s a joke, but he leaves the office to talk to Marcia. She’s crying. Fernando asks her what’s wrong. She says nothing is wrong. She got his gift that he sent. Oh, there is a giant, giant rock on her finger. “Me?” “Yes, I have it in my hands.” Fernando curses Omar off the phone. He doesn’t know what Omar did. Fernando says that he’s glad that she likes it. Marcia says of course she does; it’s the most beautiful engagement ring that she has ever seen in her life. Close your mouth and stop your eye twitching, Fernandito. It’s about to get a whole lot worse.

Lety debates the two envelopes. She decides to take them both to Fernando and let him decide. She changes her mind and opens one of the envelopes. Inside is a letter. Lety begins to read. She makes it through the first sentence and then gasps. Her voice falters. It’s like she can’t believe what’s right in front of her.

Fernando and Marcia talk about her engagement ring and the beautiful card that he wrote her. He thought it was a way to prove that he really does want to marry him. She’s really happy! She reads the card to him. It mentions grandchildren. Omar really did miss his true calling as a Hallmark author. Fernando curses Omar to the side again.

Lety continues to read the letter. Tears, gasping and screaming. He’s not going to get married! He told me that he wouldn’t! He told me! She can’t believe the mention of Tomas. She can’t even finish reading the letter before yelling “What is this??!! What is this??!!” to no one. Once she finishes the letter, all she can do is cover her mouth and cry. She sits in Fernando’s chair, alone and crying. Everything, everything has changed.

Fernando continues to talk to Marcia on the phone. He asks her how many grandchildren she wants to have. She says that she wants three kids. Three! Fernando excuses himself. he has a meeting. Cristina and Luigi talk about Fernando. Luigi tells her to avoid Fernando. He left the office so he could tell more lies. Cristina reassures Luigi that she likes him. He calls her his queen. She excuses herself to go eat. Luigi says he’ll send her everything as quickly as possible. Cristina says she’s going to Fernando’s office, but only for a minute.

In Fernando’s office, Cristina runs into a crying Lety. She asks if Lety has seen Fernando. Lety says no. Cristina asks Lety what’s happened. Nothing. Cristina pardons herself but she thinks that Lety needs help. Lety doesn’t want anything. Cristina says she doesn’t like to see Lety like this. Lety pardons herself. Cristina walks over to her to comfort her, but Lety moves away. Cristina asks Lety again what’s wrong. Lety says that something happened to her that would never happen to a woman like Cristina. She asks Cristina to sit and then excuses herself.

Fernando talks to Omar on the phone. He yells at him about the ring. Why didn’t you send her flowers??? You told me to do something. Why are you mad? This ring confirms your enormous desire to marry Marcia. “What I want least at this time in my life is to marry Marcia!” Of course, because you want to be with your little gargoyle. That’s exactly what I want, Fernando thinks to himself, but it’s not possible. Omar says that Fernando owes him 5,000 Euros. What??!! I bought her a nice ring! She’s very happy! Yes, Marcia is enchanted, but I’m not.

Cristina comes into Lety’s office. She tries to get Lety to tell her what’s wrong. Lety says that Cristina could not understand because she has never lived a life like hers. Cristina asks if her boyfriend did something. What does it matter? It the same story, like always! Lety asks Cristina to leave. Cristina how could she be so sure about her; Lety doesn’t know her. All I need to know is that you’re beautiful. Men follow you, dream about you. Not me. They make fun of me; use me.

Fernando and Carolina enter Luigi’s office. Luigi tells Carolina that he missed her. Carolina says that she came for the two of them. She found something marvelous for the Cannes Festival. Carolina asks if its okay if they all go look at it. Luigi leaves his dog behind, tied to his chair.

Lety continues to ask Cristina to leave. Cristina says she’s sorry for insisting, but she does understands Lety’s pain. Pain does not have a face; it does not discriminate. She says that she’s also cried, just like Lety. Her soul has been destroyed. She thought her heart would never get better. She knows exactly, how Lety feels. For many years she was very ugly too, at one time. People made fun of her everywhere, even her family made fun of her. Yes, but time has made you beautiful. I was born ugly, and I’ll die ugly. Lety it wasn’t a physical change that made me beautiful. No, Lety, I stopped being ugly after I learned to love myself. A lot of times beauty is worse then being ugly. It’s difficult to recognize real love. I can never tell if someone loves me for me, Cristina. Men like to show me off to others. You and I are the same. We need someone who loves us for who we are, not for our bodies or beautiful faces. Beautiful women do not have all the luck. Life is not easy for anyone. I know what its like to be lonely. I’m sorry to talk to you like this, but I see myself in you. One concept that has always helped me is a Chinese symbol that means crisis. It also represents optimism. Every time you suffer, there is a new opportunity to be happy. You’re a beautiful woman. It’s important that you recognize that beauty in your soul will make your image more beautiful. I’m here for you, for anything that you need. Cristina leaves Lety alone in her office.

The cuartel look for Lety to go to lunch. Yazmin walks in, talking to Efren on the phone. Lola gets upset, but she thanks Yazmin for taking her kids. Yazmin insults the kids and Lola. She says that the kids are just like Lola, incorrigible. The cuartel herds Lola into the elevator.

Lety looks at the cards that Omar left for Fernando. The first one was for if Fernando had slept with Lety. Lety reads the card. More tears. The cards drop to the floor. Lety pleads to God for help.

Forgot to mention that the saint Lety has is Saint Jude. Also, if you notice, the car on Fernando's desk is almost the identical model of the one his father made him give Ariel when he was a child.
Sorry I don't have any teasers. My mind went blank.
Have a great night everyone. Enjoy your ice cream. ;-)

Thank you Amanda for the quick recap! Especially for interpeting the letter!
So, so sad. My heart is broken for Lety. Omar you are a jerk. Fernando you are an extremely handsome idiot. I think you and Omar deserve each other. Lety and Marcia can do better.
I'm too depressed to even think about ice cream!
Carrie L.

Thanks for the extremely thorough interpretation - this was a lot of detail, and so fast, no less!!! Are you trying to beat your own records!!! Lets hope for a happier show tomorrow!

St Jude is the Patron Saint of Lost Causes...My take is that Fernando is the Lost Cause not Lety...Anyhow the letter was cruel, but like everything else, when people do something like this, it is always a joke that goes too far. Like saying things behind someone's back, you never really expect them to find out & then they do.

I agree that at least Lety sees what is comin, while Fernando would have preferred to leave her in the dark & then marry Marcia.

In case anyone's wondering, 5000 Euros = US$6,267.81. I don't know a lot about these things but that seems like a very good price for such a sweet chunk of bling.

Even though I knew what was coming, I kept hoping Lety would just take the two unopened envelopes to Fern and not look inside. :-)

Oh and whatever happened to the DVD? Did Fern ever end up forwarding it to his parents, or is Lety going to have to deal with another angry phone call from them?

I actually translated the letter ahead of time. I knew this would be a talky episode and everyone would want to know what happened, so I tried to post fast.
Yeah, I'm still not an Omar hater. It was a joke that went waay to far. Lety was never supposed to see that letter.
I agree with Beckster. At least Lety is not in the dark about what Fernando is doing. This is a novela, and we knew he couldn't get away with it forever. I think this is going to set Lety up for a great evolution. If she never found the letter, I'm not sure that she would ever change.

I agree. However bad Lety feels now, just think how much worse she would feel if Fern surprised her by marrying Marcia and securing his presidency after she illegally cooked the books for him.

I still don't think Fern and Omar ever thought their plans through - how they expect Lety to keep their secret after they basically ruin her and leave her with nothing left to lose. Plus there's the fact that they're incompetent and won't be able to run the business without her. But now they have a whole new challenge on their hands and they don't even know it yet. *cackle cackle*

Is everyone forgetting that it started out with bad intentions but he REALLY fell in love with her. He, at least had a heart, he didnt want to do it - Omar, however, did it with great glee. You can see when Fern talks to her that he loves her. Call me a sap, but seeing him cry is going to kill me as much as seeing her last night. Fern's biggest crime is that he is weak.

Thanks so much for translating the letter; I figured out the gist, but was lost on the specifics. I'm hoping that all involved will have a chance for growth: Lety needs to get over her self loathing, Fern needs to get over his need to please (others & himself), Omar needs to get over his fear of intimacy, and Marcia needs to stop pining her happiness on achieving a little girl's dream.

You're right, Anonymous - it was practically spelled out for us, but I didn't quite put it together. Both Lety and Marcia are trapped inside the roles of childhood: Lety as the ugly girl, and Marcia as Fernando's sidekick.

And Fern is trapped in his childhood rivalry with Ariel and the feeling that pleasing his parents is more important than anything else.

All three of them need to grow up if they want to get on with their lives, and it takes a crisis like this to spur that kind of growth.

We never did get to hear Omar's backstory. I don't know if that means we won't get to see him improve and grow up. (Alicia too, for that matter. You just know she's got some issues.)

Thanks, Amanda! Wow, watching Lety read The Letter was excruciating. But you are right that it had to happen if she is ever going to move on -- whether or not she ends up with Fern in the end. I wasn't liking Fern so much in this episode, so I can't wait to see him suffering; that's when he's the most loveable. Ice cream for lunch sounds about perfect right now!

LOL. That "plan" was hatched before I started watching, but I'm aware of it. Maybe they don't know that there are telephones in Egypt too. What a couple of morons! I wonder how long the company would last if they were running it by themselves.

PS - for ice cream tonight I recommend Ben & Jerry's Karamel Sutra. I really wanted Chunky Monkey last night but this was an awesome substitute.

You know what else worked? Halloween candy. Too bad I have to go buy more now for the kids!

I don't feel too bad for Fernando right now but I have a feeling that we're going to see him suffer!!!

I been thinkin about Omar...Yes he is a jerk and I would probably Axe-Murder, both of them...but really I put the blame on Fernando. He knew exactly what Omar was going to do & he never firmly said back off. He is weak...even though he is pretty much the funnest person I know, but...he is weak and lazy, letting someone else write "fake love letters" dude how lazy is that? I guess if need be Omar could step up to the plate an father the three fantasy children.

Ah, Alicia. Yep, I'd say issues aplenty and you probably don't have to go any further than to the person on the end of her cell phone - her daddy! I have to say I particularly enjoyed the Christina character in this ep. I had mentally been calling her "Gummi Worm Lips" and dismissing her as a shallow, pretty thing - exactly what the character rails against, being judged positively or negatively based solely on appearance. Bad, bad me!

Me too. But I think she was generally more attractive in this episode. In her previous run on the show she was more preeny and flirtatious (and very fake). In this one she seemed more natural and sincere.

I'm also remembering the first day she was on the show and Omar was freakin' crawling all over her, moving her hair in front of her shoulders etc and she kept moving it back! Being treated exactly as she said, like a thing for them to treat as they like.

Excellent recall - I'd forgotten Omar was all over her like Karo on syrup. The only person she really flirted with big time was Luigi, someone she knew really wouldn't follow through.
