La Fea Más Bella #139 11/6/06 The one where EVERYBODY TALKS LOUDLY
Fernando and Omar are in the conference room, and Lety is in her office listening in. Fernando tells Omar that his date with Lety was caught short because Tomas came to pick her up at Yuri’s shindig. Omar mocks Fern because Lety chose Tomas “el nerd” instead of a night of crazy passionate animal love with Fern . Omar makes growling noises (must be another nod to Mundo de Fieras). Fern is still mad that she actually left with Tomas. Fern rolls his eyes, slams an office chair, and generally acts like a jealous man in love. Omar thinks it’s a bad sign. He advises Fern that he better not wait too long to spend some quality time with Lety. He should take the little vampire out for a good time ASAP. Lety is disgusted. They wonder some more about why Lety is acting weird. Fern mentions his promise to Lety to break his engagement with Marcia. Aha! Omar decides that must be why Lety is being weird. She must be doubting whether Fern will really break it off! He thinks he’s soooo smart. Fern tells Omar he’s wrong; Fern already discussed that with Lety and she was very understanding. In any case, Fern says he needs help writing a card for Lety, something really good. He can’t keep giving Lety sappy cards, she deserves better, something profound. Profound? Omar doesn’t get it. He helps him write another sappy card.
Lety’s phone rings and Lety answers brusquely. It’s Tomas. He says Filmo Imagen just got the approval for a bank loan that Conceptos needs. Lety asks him to transfer the funds to Coceptos right away. She also says she got Fernando to sign another promissory note (pagare), just in case the weasels find a way for the first documents (that give her ownership of Conseptos) to disappear. That must have been what Lety had Fern sign the day before when she was hounding him for a Carvajallmark card… very sneaky! Tomas says he is at a car dealership. He found a car he likes – of course he did, the lot is full of flashy and super expensive looking convertibles. He needs her to come down to authorize the car loan. Lety agrees to come by during her lunch break.
Marcia and Alicia talk about Tomas. They call him a naco (low-class) with money. Alicia tells Marcia that Lety was crying over him in the bathroom the other day, so their relationship must be in trouble. Marcia wonders what Alicia is plotting. Alicia denies plotting anything but it’s obvious that she sees this as an opportunity to get a piece of the naco pie. To change the subject, she ask Marcia if she got her a gift from Germany. Marcia feigns ignorance but then hands over a bottle of perfume.
Omar leaves the conference room and Fernando reads the sappy card that Omar just wrote for him. He’s not impressed. He says that what he really needs to tell Lety is that he feels terrible, that every day the situation with Marcia feels worse, that the engagement ring was Omar the Embicile's doing, not his. (Where are you, Lety? This is the part where you should be eavesdropping!)
Alicia and Marcia walk back to the common area, and Alicia asks Marcia who the gift box she’s carrying is for. Marcia loudly exclaims that it’s an esclava (a manly bracelet) for Fern, as a thank you gift for HER ENGAGEMENT RING. The cuartel hear this (how could they not?) and are impressed. Alicia loudly thanks Marcia for getting her the EXPENSIVE PERFUME. As Alicia walks to her desk, she sees that her last piece of chocolate is missing. She is impactada! She squeals in terror and accuses the cuartel of taking it. They deny any connection to the tragic disappearance of her chocolate. They are offended at Alicia’s allegation. (Seriously, these people need to find something more time-worthy to argue about.) Meanwhile, in the powder room, Martha is ogling Alicia’s chocolate. She talks to it and plays with it. She puts it up to the mirror so she can look at it twice as much. It’s sort of creepy. Alicia and the cuartel continue to argue as Martha walks back in, licking her lips.
Marcia goes into Fern’s office to bring him the present. Fern feigns excitement to see her. He pretends he likes the manly esclava, “Ah Caray!” She loudly thanks him for her ENGAGEMENT RING, and Lety overhears. Marcia is feeling frisky. She says she wants him NOW, but Fern says she needs to calm down, because Lety is in the next room. Marcia gets ticked off and says someday she’ll get used to the idea that wherever Fern is, Lety will always be there too. Lety, listening in, is ticked off too.
Carolina brings Lety a candle. Caro lights it and tells Lety that fire purifies (a nod to Doña Jacinta at Barreras De Amor). Caro says Lety should always light the candle with a purpose in mind. "Like what?" Caro explains that, for example, as she lit the candle just now, she hoped that it will help Lety purify her body of all the negativity she is feeling, and she also thought about the person who Lety is mad at. She gives Lety a quick lesson on karma. Caro tells Lety to always keep the candle lit. As soon as Caro leaves, Lety blows out the candle.
Jasmin and Lola have another confrontation. Lola says that Efren was never interested in her house until Jasmin showed up. Jasmin pretends to be hurt. Irma is nearby and tells Jasmin not to play dumb, they know what she’s up to. As Jasmin tries to walk away, Lola accidentally-on-purpose bumps a package that Jasmin is holding. The package breaks open. It’s a plaque that says “Welcome To Our New Home… Efren y Jasmin.” Lola is impactada. Jasmin tells Lola that she better pay for the plaque because it was a gift for Efren. Lola says she’ll be happy to pay for it, but she’s going to keep the plaque so she can finish breaking it… over Efren’s head! Jasmin says “Uh, nevermind” and scampers off.
Fernando brings Lety a card and a box of chocolates. Lety admires Fern’s new manly esclava, and asks if Marcia got it for him. Fern nervously says that she did, but it’s just a souvenir, and that she probably got it at the airport. Lety thought bubbles “Yeah right, a souvenir in exchange for the engagement ring.” Fernando hastely leaves. Lety reads the card. It says that he’s troubled because she is not acting herself, that his body misses her (this sounded much better in Spanish). Lety wants to believe what’s in the card, but remembers hearing Fern asking Omar for help writing it.
Lety goes through Fern’s office on her way to lunch. She says “Thanks for the chocolate, it was… rancid!” (Good one!) Fern looks crushed. Lety says she’s just kidding, the chocolate was fine. Omar walks in. Lety is just cold enough to him to make them wonder if she’s doing it on purpose. Lety walks out.
The cuartel invites Lety to lunch, but she tells them she can’t. When she realizes Fern and Omar are listening, she tells the cuartel that it’s because SHE IS HAVING LUNCH WITH HER BOYFRIEND, and that he told her he has a surprise for her. Omar and Fern (1) are impactados, and (2) wonder what the surprise could be. Omar asks if Fern gave Lety her card. Fern says he did, and that he had to write it himself, because Omar’s writing stinks. They argue like 8-year olds. Omar says Fernando can do his own writing from now on, he won’t be Fernando’s Cyrano de Bergerac anymore. He calls Fernando “Neruda” and “Shakespear” and tells Fern he better take Lety on a hot date immediately! Fern agrees but says it’s not so easy with Marcia around.
Lety arrives at dealership. She realizes there’s nothing but luxury autos there and tells Tomas he’s crazy. Tomas demonstrates for Lety how cool he looks sitting in a sleek convertible talking on the cell phone in his radio announcer voice. Lety asks how much it costs. “Oh, it’s just a million pesos, about 90,000 dollars.”
Omar theorizes that Tomas must be trying to seduce “la fea.” Fernando clenches his teeth and says Lety is NOT UGLY. Omar suspects that Fern must really be jealous.
Tomas tries to convince Lety to buy the million-peso car. Lety says that while technically, they can afford it, she’s just not comfortable buying something so classy. Tomas says that in that case, they should just go on and live their lives as busy little worker bees, letting someone else enjoy the good life (or something like that). He gets Lety to touch the car, then to sit in it. “A car like this makes us better-looking. Guys will be lining up for you .” Lety finally agrees to buy the car. Tomas is ecstatic.
Lety and Tomas drive up to Conceptos in their new car. The cuartel, Saimon, Alicia and Marcia are all outside coming back from lunch. They are all impressed by the car. Lety loudly thanks Tomas and calls him MI AMOR. Tomas loudly calls Lety MI VIDA.
As he gets in the car, he calls out “Ciao” to Alicia and then drives away. Alicia explains to Marcia that the guy is Lety’s boyfriend. The cuartel ask Lety why she didn’t introduce Tomas to them. Alicia tells Lety her boyfriend must be a chauffeur. Lety, who is not in the mood for this, replies that, no, he is not a chauffeur; no, he did not win the car in a raffle; no, he did not get it from an ex-husband; and oh yeah, nobody will be showing up to tow his car anytime, because he actually works for his stuff. The cuartel cackle in delight. Alicia says she won’t reduce herself to their level by responding to them.
In Fern’s office, Fern, Marcia, and Omar are talking business. They need Lety to draw up some paperwork. Fern calls for Lety. Marcia says Lety is not in her office, she’s outside showing off he boyfriend and her car to her friends. Fernando is incensed! He goes outside to look for her. He sternly tells her to come inside, because they lots of work to do. The cuartel comment that Lety always has to fix all of Fernando’s problems.
Alicia is wallowing in self-pity. She tells Marcia about how the cuartel taunts her because they repo’ed her car from the Conceptos lot. Marcia tells her not to worry about it, that it’s just silly office gossip, and that Alicia should not bring herself to their level. Marcia leaves and Alicia thinks aloud that Marcia is right; that she is not at their level. She has even less then them, because she doesn’t have a car or a boyfriend, she is lower then them. Awwwwh, poor Alicia... NOT!
Fernando is in his office when Lety walks in. He points out that she did not immediately rush back up as he asked her to. Woops, sorry, she says (though not very sincerely). Fern asks if she had lunch with Tomas. She says she did. He is at his desk trying to stay calm but he is acting very hostile toward his highlighters. He asks why she was showing off her “BOYFRIEND” to her friends. He makes harsh quote marks with his fingers in the air. I thought the veins in his neck would burst! She points out that it was his idea for her to say that Tomas is her boyfriend. Besides, she says, you look so happy with Marcia, what with ENGAGEMENT RING and all. Fernando is impactado. He stutters, “I didn’t want you to...” and Lety finishes his sentence “to find out that you got her a ring?” She says that she’s fine with it. After all, he needs to keep the relationship with Marcia in order to keep Ariel from dissolving the company, etc, etc.… Fern changes the subject. He needs Lety to put together some paperwork, and he wants to make sure the fake documents are perfect for the upcoming board meeting. Lety smiles the most evil smile that ever was smiled.

I was really surprised Tomas wanted Alicia to see him looking like his old self. Alicia didn't seem to mind his looks since he has the new car.
Unless I missed something it seemed like Carolina suddenly appeared in Lety's office? What happened to the exchange between Marcia and Fernando in the other room?
Marcia and Omar get on my nerves. I do enjoy the exchanges between Fern and Omar and Marcia and Alicia though.
Lety is getting scarier by the day.
I loved the man-bracelet. If I were Fernando, I'd want to make sure it doesn't have a homing device on it or something, like an ankle monitor for home arrest. :)
I noticed the Mercedes logos were all either hidden by bows at the car lot, or replaced by a squiggle (it wasn't easy, but I was able to slow-mo through the quick shot across the front of the new car). I wonder why they did that. It just seems odd, since they keep saying "Mercedes."
Lety was smiling a very evil smile. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. I didn't realize until tonight how far she is willing to go to get revenge. I guess taking over Conceptos and wiping Fernando all over the floor is on the agenda.
BTW I loved Fern being celoso. His aggressive finger quotes where halarious, as where his stabbing motions with the markers. Poor guy, he just not use to being usurped and replaced by another man. Lety could drive him insane and get all the revenge she wants with just this gimmick.
