La Fea Más Bella #139-140 12/22/10 Does this car make me look different?

Capitulo 139.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Alicia tells Marcia that Tomás is nothing but a rich naco, but his relationship with Lety is on the rocks, considering that Lety was crying her eyes out in the bathroom.

2. Fernando says to himself, “Carvajal, you’re an idiot. It’s not your fault; it’s my fault for listening to you. I have to tell her that I feel awful. Every day it gets harder to break up with Marcia. I didn’t give her the ring! It was that imbecile, Omar. He’s always wrong about everything.”

3. Marcia gives Fern a present from her trip, an esclava (“ID bracelet,” but also the feminine form of “slave.”) Lety hears her thank him for the engagement ring, and she is crushed into yet finer sand.

4. He brings today’s card, and she points out his bracelet. The card says, roughly, “You feel so distant. You don’t care that we missed our night together. I desire you. My body misses you. I can’t stand waiting another week.” Lety weeps, “If only it were true.” Fern hears her tell the witches and Irmita that her novio is taking her out to lunch, and he has a surprise.

5. Tom wants a $90K Mercedes, but Lety says it’s too much car for their image. He says they worked hard for it, and she gives in because of his love and support. Fernando can’t stand the thought of Tom with Lety, and he leaves, mid sentence. Omar tries to comprehend the idea that Fern is jealous.

6. The witches admire Lety’s car. Ali asks, “Whose chauffer is your novio?” Lety answers, “It’s Tom’s, and his ex- didn’t give it to him. He got it by working hard. What’s more, it won’t be repossessed.”

7. The witches ooh and ahh. Sara says it’s wonderful that she can use it. Others say a rich galan wouldn’t let his novia ride the bus, it’s good he does what her boss won’t do (get her a car), Fern only wants her to work and doesn’t care about her, and he should be ashamed that his right hand who rescues him from messes rides the bus. Lety says, “To Fernando it’s normal that feas ride the bus.”

8. Fernando is quaking with jealousy. She gushed about Tom to her friends. Lety says he seems so content with Marcia back. He denies, “Marcia is just happy because..” Lety finishes, “You gave her the ring.” Suddenly Lety holds the high ground and Fernando backpedals. But Lety says, “At least now she’ll be happy until you break the engagement.”

9. Fern knows that was a direct attack, so he acts based on fear. “Lety, you need to start on the balance. It has to be perfect so no one is suspicious.” Lety answers pointedly, “Yes, so no one knows your company is in ruins, and I have your company embargoed.” Now Fern is really scared.

Capitulo 140.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. The witches mock Alicia about her poverty so she calls Tom to arrange a date for tomorrow night. Marta fights with Alicia over a bonbon and Marta faints.

2. Fernando asks to take Lety home tonight, but she says Tom is picking her up. Besides, Fern shouldn’t take her home now that Marcia’s back.

3. Lety says that they’ll be paid $800K for the Sport Wind commercial, but it had expenses of $700K. Luigi insults Lety, Fernando objects, and Lety says, “Don’t feel like you have to defend me. In the end, Luigi is always very nice.” Everyone’s stunned.

4. As soon as they’re alone, Fernando asks Lety why he wouldn’t let him defend her. She makes an excuse that someone might misinterpret it. He tells her to send Tom away; he’s taking her home. Marcia interrupts. She says he doesn’t need to take Lety home since her novio is here in his new luxury car.

5. Lola confronts Efren on the street because he wants to take her house and leave his own children homeless.

6. Lety makes sure Fernando sees her leave with Tom, and Tom treats her like a date, while Fern fumes. He starts hyperventilate when it dawns on him that maybe Lety used FI (and thus Conceptos) capital to buy the car.

Paula, I thought I heard Fern tell Lety the ring wasn't his idea, or he didn't buy the ring. Something like that. It was really fast, but I think he was trying to tell her the ring didn't come from him and then was interrupted.
Lety is so blinded by her anger that she can't see that Fern is actually acting jealous for real. Or that the card he gave her today was written in a different handwriting than the previous ones ( I always wondered why Lety didn't realize the cards weren't written in Fern's handwriting, I mean she as his assistant would know what his writing looks like)

Diann, about the ring. Here's the snippet.
L: Well, Mar is back and you two seem so content.
F: No we’re not! She’s happy because ...
L: Because you gave her an engagement ring.
F: I didn’t want...
L: You didn’t want me to find out.

Lety can't recognize that Fernando is sincerely jealous. Yes, she's blinded by anger and pain, and also it's self defense. But let's not forget. She completely believed Miguel and it was all lies. She completely believed Phase 1 of the betrayal (up until the motel) and that was all lies. She completely believed Phase 2 of the betrayal, and the letter tells her that was all lies.

Her only rational conclusion is that she is incapable of discerning truth from lie when it concerns romance. Remember in "A Beautiful Mind"? The star learned to test whether the people talking to him were real or delusions because in his 5 senses he couldn't tell the difference. That's how Lety's feeling. Fern has seemed SO MUCH in love lately, and she thinks she was wrong about that, so she concludes that her observations are always wrong.

On top of that, since she read the letter she's seen plenty of evidence that the romance was all a lie, particularly when she was at the board room door and heard Fernando tell Omar that of course he doesn't love Lety. On one hand, the world's greatest liar seems really sincere. On the other hand, the letter, the engagement ring, his words to Omar, and his asking for the balance ALL tell her that he's lying. Who ya' gonna' trust?

Thanks Paula and Amanda thanks for the original recaps. I don't always read the comments but I did today and got a kick out of Melenama's comment about not putting Fernandos picture on the blog page next to Colunga's until he starts to behave. Too funny.

Lety is a much better friend to Thomas than he is to her. All that flirting and wanting to buy such an expensive car.

Marcia's character is quite layered. As mean as she is to Lety it always surprises me when she is so supportive to the rest of the cuartel. Like Lola and even Paula Maria and now Marta.

Look at Fernando's opinion of Omar by now: "Carvajal, you’re an idiot. It’s not your fault; it’s my fault for listening to you. ... I didn’t give her the ring! It was that imbecile, Omar. He’s always wrong about everything." Okay, Fernando recognizes that Omar is always wrong about everything, and STILL he goes to Omar for advice!

Remember the old westerns, where every time the bad guy would take a step closer, the sheriff would shoot at his feet so he'd mind his distance? That's what Lety's doing. Every time that Fernando starts to come in close emotionally (Why are you doing this to ME, Lety? Don't you care?), Lety fires another round, like mentioning the engagement ring.

Speaking of the ring, as far as Lety knows, Fern got Marcia the ring but he says she doesn't mean anything to him. Lety got Tom the car but she says he doesn't mean anything to her.

Twice in Cap 140, Fern’s in Lety’s office trying to melt the ice, but Marcia arrives and calls to him from his office. IOW his attempt to win Lety back is foiled by his relationship with Marcia.

About the car. Remember way back in the series, we said that in Fea a car is a symbol of power and control, particularly the ability to control one's own life. e.g. When Fernando registered the embargo, his car was in the shop, and Erasmo drove them to the registry - he lost the company to Lety, and he lost driving ability to Lety's dad.

Now, Alicia lost her car on one day, indicating that she has no more control over her life. The very next day, Lety who has always been subservient to Fernando buys a car. And it is at the same time as she is breaking free from Fern and steering her own life. She even disobeys his direct orders. As Marta said on the BLF board, ". The moment she gets the Mercedes, he can no longer control her, read her, or even predict her behavior at all and it drives him nuts."

Pata, I think Maaarcia is mean to Lety because she senses something about her that will disrupt her life. She doesn't know what it is or even if she recognizes it, but instinctively she is not "safe" with Lety around. Something about Lety is going to change her whole life. Woman's Intuition.

Yesterday I brought up the patronage theme from early in the series. A patron's primary duty is to protect the client. A client's primary duty is to support the patron.

Lety first fell in love with Fernando, not for looks or money or charm, but because he defended her. He essentially reached out his hand and accepted her as his client from Day 1. In response, Lety became the perfect client, supporting him in everything, and demonstrating absolute loyalty.

With the letter, instead of protecting her he destroyed her. In Lety's mind he has broken the patron/client "contract." As a result, did you see what happened in the meeting? Luigi attacked Lety, Fernando defended her, and Lety said, "Don’t feel like you have to defend me." She REJECTED him as her patron in front of witnesses, i.e. officially. Notice, as soon as they were alone he asked her why she rejected his protection.

If he is no longer her patron, then it is no longer her duty to support him. This does not bode well for that doctored balance he needs so badly.

Marcia may be annoying with her constant checking up on Fern and even annoyed Alicia in the SPM episode but she really does love Fern. When he needs help she comes through for him something Lety never does.

The coven was jumping to conclusions again yesterday assuming that Alicia's father is in prison based on no more information then they had when they started the pregnancy story. I do wish they would just get on a bus and drive over a cliff shrieking, stuffing their faces and gossiping. They serve no real purpose in the story.

Omar once again picks up that Lety is not acting like herself and that it is interesting that Fern may be really jealous. People that fear emotion are sometimes very observant about emotion around them. How typical of Fern to blame someone else when things go bad. Yes Omar had the bad idea but Fern went with it and Fern doesn't learn from his mistakes.

Diann I too wondered why Lety was so dumb she didn't notice the differences in handwriting. Then again some people only want to see what they want to see.

I have come to the conclusion that Lety with her sulking, pouting and lately nasty behavior is really a spoiled brat. Erasmo and Julieta give her anything she wants and protect her always.

One thing really does bother me. Lety keeps rereading that letter. There is something sick about that because it reinforces her bitterness and lust for revenge. She has become a character that is difficult to like and while Fern is acting like an idiot he deserves better than her.

ALERT!!

If you have the te-lenovelas disks of LFMB, they are missing the first 20 minutes of Thursday's 2nd episode, #142. So you may want to record it this time 'round.

Paula,
The discs are also missing the Cuervavaca scene before they put their clothes back on. It jumps straight to them deciding to forgo the physical. It doesn't have the part where they are toasting wine to each other. And Fern asking Lety whats wrong because she was crying and her explaining why. Also the water swimming scene is set to some weird music, NOT Angie's Aqui Estare (guess they didn't want to pay royalties). I wish I would have saved that episode and not deleted it.
Diann

Paula, don't worry, I am not watching the discs ahead of the broadcast. Just watched what I have already seen. Boy, a lot has been cut out for the discs. But at least most of the cuartel scenes are missing (Yahh).
Also, I don't think anyone would be able to follow the discs unless they've seen the entire episodes. It jumps alot.
Diann

Diann, I think you're talking about the official condensed disks from Televisa. The set sells for about $15. I'm talking about the complete novela on disk, all 300 hours except for glitches like the missing 20 minutes from Cap 142.

Paula, My jaw dropped when you said there is a complete 300 hour DVD. Where do they sell that?
Diann

Paula,
What do you think of this--- If Fern had admitted to Omar (in the sala de juntas) that he did fall in love with Lety, Omar would have been surprised, but supportive to Fern. I think Omar would be an emotional crutch to help Fern. Omar seems callus on the outside, but he would do anything to help his best friend Fern. I don't think Omar would do burlas as Fern thinks he would. Sure, shock first, but then undeniable support. Diann

Diann, the site is Te-lenovelas.com. Fea costs $165 for the complete 300 hours, but there is a 25% sale until Jan 3. I've bought 4 series from them. Their LFMB is good quality, but I wouldn't recommend their BLF because of sound quality. There are no closed captions. The disks have menus and the shows are numbered so you can jump to the desired episode.

Keep in mind, these are "unauthorized" copies. I would far prefer to buy a complete novela from a more legitimate source, but since Televisa does not produce complete sets, only horribly condensed, I buy from these folks.

What if Fernando had told Omar? Well, first Fernando has to man up and stop lying, and stop being ashamed of loving Lety. That's what's stopping him; not Omar's burlas. True, Omar loves Fernando, but it's a very jealous love. Some on the board disagree with me, but what I've seen is that again and again, every time Fern shows some affection for Lety, Omar is very cruel to her or does something to turn Fernando against her. Omar is Fern's best friend, and Omar is losing his best friend to Lety. I don't think he would be supportive.

Paula,
I ordered it!! I'm totally trusting you on this one....
Diann
