La Fea Más Bella #150 11/21/06 Busted!

Your boyfriend was with la Oxi last night! Lety feigns distress.

Erasmo wants Tomas to explain himself. Tomas tells Erasmo that it’s all about his luck. Erasmo doesn’t act convinced. It’s not just luck but also because he’s intelligent, nice, enchanting and sympathetic. Instead of shaking his head, Erasmo shakes his hand. Tomas shows Erasmo how well his investments went today.

Lety pretends to be horrified. She asks the cuartel how they found out about his. Juana says that they knew that Alicia went with to dinner with someone last night. PM and Sara tell Lety that they confirmed with la Noir that Tomas was the man with Alicia last night. The rest of the cuartel says maybe there are lots of Tomas Moras. PM puts a stop to this. Lola goes on a tirade about all men being the same. Sara begs for permission to take the Oxi out. (How I wish Lety would have said yes!) Lety asks them not to say anything to Alicia or anyone until she talks to Tomas. The cuartel acquiesces and leaves but reminds Lety that if they break-up, she will not be able to take Tomas’s car anymore. Irmita tells everyone to leave Lety alone. Lety continues to calm everyone. She grunts out Tomas name after they leave. Before going back to work, the cuartel stop in Fernando’s office to complain about men. They’re all like this, pure animals!

It worked! It worked! Erasmo cannot believe that Tomas had so much luck again. Tomas made a wise investment in dollars right before the value of the peso dropped. Julieta brings over some food. She says if the men don’t want to eat them, she can give them to Moty. The boys put the food on the desk in front of them. The phone rings. Geez, who could it be? Watch out Tomas! It’s Lety! Tomas wants to tell Lety the good news about the finances of Filmo Imagen. Lety sarcastically congratulates him. L - Tell me, my boyfriend, how did you spend the company’s money last night? T – Um, I bought some stuff for the office. L - The checkbook? T- It’s in its place. L – And the bill from La Noir? Tomas plays dumb, but Lety is upset. She demands to know if he took Alicia to La Noir the night before. T - Yes, but it was an insignificant date. I swear I won’t do it again! Lety continues to yell at the same time that Omar and Fernando walk into the president’s office. They quietly listen to Lety yell at Tomas for taking Alicia to La Noir on Filmo Imagen’s dime. Tomas says he will assume the consequences. She hangs up on him and stands in her office, frustrated.

Erasmo asks Tomas if his good luck has ended has ended so soon. “The devil is a pig!” Tomas replies. (This sounds much better and makes a lot more sense in Spanish) Tomas begins to cry and writes his resignation from Filmo Imagen. He folds the paper and asks Erasmo to take it to Lety. He gets up to leave. Julieta chases after him and asks him to wait. Tomas tells her that he needs to resign…from all of Julieta’s cooking. Erasmo doesn’t understand Tomas’s change in attitude. Erasmo sits Tomas so that they can talk and eat. Tomas gets up and says he’ll see them later. Julieta wonders if Tomas is sick. Tomas walks away from the house and turns to look at the car. T - I’m going to miss you! I’m going to miss you! He walks away, and turns around about every five feet. The last time he waives good-bye to the car.

Fernando freaks out about Lety’s conversation with Tomas. Omar says the worst thing is that Tomas took out his (Fernando’s) car and paid with Filmo Imagen’s check! Lety storms out of her office. She tells Fernando that she didn’t realize that he was back, then she politely turns to Omar and asks him how he is. Omar snickers and asks her the same. Fernando asks her what’s wrong. She negates that anything is wrong and runs out of the office. Something’s wrong! Omar’s more concerned with the balance!

The cuartel stands out in the secretary area still obsessing about Tomas and Alicia. Lety tells them that she talked to Tomas and it’s all true. Omar passes by and listens for a moment. PM thinks that it would be a good idea if Lety punish Tomas by taking his car for forever. The cuartel and Lety realistically realize this isn’t possible. Juana says that if Lety goes out with Tomas tonight maybe she’ll stop his date with Alicia! Lety asks if Tomas is really going out with Alicia again. That’s how she made it seem. Fernando walks into the room and says that he needs Lety. After Lety leaves, Sara talks about how sad Lety appeared. Sara says that Lety may be really smart, but she doesn’t know anything about issues of the heart.

Fernando warns Lety that he and Omar overheard her conversation with Tomas. She was yelling and he could tell she was really upset because she was yelling. Lety apologizes. Fernando asks what’s going on with her and Tomas. She tries to pass it off as a bad understanding that resulted in a fight. That’s not what seemed like to me, he replies. Fernando tells Lety that the car, the money and Filmo Imagen don’t bother him. Then what is important? He asks her if she was jealous. L – Is that how it appeared, Don Fernando? Yes, Fernando thinks she was upset because Tomas went out with another woman. She says she’s upset because he took the car out and spent Filmo Imagen’s money. When she gets to her office she does a little movement and then walks over to her desk and picks up the phone. She calls her mom to ask for Tomas. L - He quit!!!! I’ll call his cell phone! (Fernando perks up a little). She tells her mom that she’ll call back to talk to Julieta. Lety hangs up and exclaims about Tomas’s idiocy.

Tomas’s hair has suddenly doubled in height! I’m not sure but I think he’s trying to do an imitation of a parrot. Maybe he thought he was going to a Jimmy Buffet concert? He says good-bye to his love, Alicia. It’s a beautiful poetic moment, especially with the screaming people in the background. He puts her picture back in his pocket book. The cellular rings. L - Where did you go? T- I’m in the street. Tomas lets Lety know that he’s going to return everything to the Padilla house. How could you even think of resigning?! Tomas gives a little speech about ethics and morals. Lety ignores this and tells him to go to her house, get the car and come get her at quittin’ time. She mentions his other “date” for the night. Huh?, he replies. L – I want to talk to you with my heart in my hand. She moves close to her door and asks him what he thinks about going to La Noir. He replies that it’s very elegant. Fernando immediately stomps into her office and says that he’s not going to permit her to go out with Tomas again. He tells her that he’s dying of jealousy and love. She asks him if he’s really jealous or afraid of losing his business. That doesn’t matter to me! Ay, it was all a daydream. Lety and Fernando look equally sad in their respective places. Fernando hears Jorge Flores in his head but stubbornly refuses to believe Jorge’s words.

Alicia talks on her phone about getting her car back. She whines that it’s not easy to get the money together. She says she’ll talk to them tomorrow but nobody better touch her beautiful car! She yells at Sara and Juana, who are listening to her conversation. She asks them what their grudge is today. They insult Alicia and she attempts an insult at Juana’s uniform, but it doesn’t work.

Luigi walks into the room with Caro (Carolina – I’m being lazy tonight) and some models. He goes over everything that needs to be done to get the girls ready for the celebration. Caro calms Luigi and says that everything will be ready by tomorrow night. Alicia walks over to them and greets Caro and Luigi. La Oxi asks Luigi to come talk to her for a minute. Luigi knows that she wants something. Yup, she wants to participate in the Cannes festival. She can sing. She starts singing some opera song. Everyone ducks there heads.

More roses for PM! Saimon asks PM why she’s so sad. In her mind ever-so-not-superficial PM is worried about never getting to ride in the Mercedes again. He begs her to tell him what’s bothering her. She tells Saimon that it’s not important and to forget about it.

Luigi tells Alicia to stop, this is not Cantando por un Sueno. For a moment, Alicia sees her 40,000 pesos. Luigi brings her back to reality and tells Alicia to forget about it, there’s not even the smallest possibility. He tells her that the show will feature Ha*sh. She blesses him. No, the group stupid. Alicia still wants to participate. Nope. Luigi says he loves her, but the answer is still no. He and his dancers wander off to wherever it is they go. Alicia thinks about Saint Tomas Mora.

Saimon pouts. PM wants to him to leave. He demands to know what’s wrong. PM tells him that her problem has nothing to do with her, it has to do with Lety. He catches on that if Lety loses her boyfriend she’ll lose the car. He asks PM if she suffers for Lety, Lety’s boyfriend or Lety’s sports car? PM weirdly smiles at him.

After speaking to her lawyer, Lola calls Efren. She asks him if he’s forgotten her. He says that he would like to, but that seems to be impossible. What does she want? Lola tells him that he can’t get half of the house until they’re officially divorced. Lola encourages El Cheque to pursue a voluntary divorce. Sara and Martha don’t understand Lola’s excitement about the divorce. She tells them that she can’t ask for money for her children until she and Efren are legally divorced. She’s going to negotiate for the house. She calls her lawyer back to talk about the voluntary divorce.

Saimon reminds PM that the car is not for people like them, but for millionaires. PM says something about her being able to get a millionare that drives a sports’ convertible (I think). This comment makes Saimon see red (literally). Weird smile again.

Jasmin, wearing a dress the same color as Saimon’s face, talks to Irmita. They talk about the dancers that Luigi hired. Luigi comes into the office with the dancers. He yells at Irmita about the wardrobe and other things for the party. She calmly writes down everything that he needs. Caro worries about him giving Irmita so much work. Don’t worry about it, she always gives 100% and if she doesn’t (he makes a weird motion, like he’s breaking his pinky) then she’ll give 200%. Caro unsurely glances at Irmita.

Saimon beats on PM’s desk. He jumps up and down. He flees. PM talks to herself, blaming Saimon for pressuring ing her.

Luigi asks Jasmin to help with preparing the dance for tomorrow. She catches on that she won’t be dancing at the celebration. . Luigi sarcastically calls her brilliant and says that she should write a book. She’s not going to dance in this event, nor the next or the next after that. She begs him for another opportunity to dance. She says that she’s bored doing the same thing everyday and she’s been taking courses. Luigi suggests that she hire a lawyer and sue the people who gave her all those classes. He tells her that they’ve talked about her future at the office, she’s going to take over Irmita’s position. He reminds her that she’s not indispensable. Maybe she should call El Cheque to take care of all her problems. Jasmin storms out of his office. (I’m doing a little I-love-Luigi-today-dance in my head!) Luigi and his harem follow.

Efren calls his lawyer to talk about options. It looks as though he’s going to have to comply with the divorce. The phone rings again. He answers his phone. It’s Jasmin. She’s going to quit her job because she’s very bored. Luigi’s never going to let her dance. Efren explains that it’s not a good time. He tells her about the divorce. She’s worried about the house. He tells her that unless he gets the divorce, he cannot proceed with anything. The divorce is going to obligate him to pay for the kids.

The cuartel yells at PM for insulting Saimon. She continues to blame him. Jasmin enters and yells at Lola for upsetting her Flaquito. Lola won’t talk to Jasmin directly. Sara threatens to punch Jasmin in the face. Jasmin spits back some insults and walks out of the room. Juana turns the conversation back to PM’s mistake with Saimon.

Saimon paces in front of Celso. Saimon asks if he should rob a bank for the money for a sports car. Celso attempts to reassure Saimon. PM steps off the elevator and gives a surprise hug to Saimon. She begs for forgiveness. Saimon won’t have it and he leaves. (So… essentially nobody is getting any tonight? Que lastima!)

Celso stands outside and sees Tomas pull up. Tomas introduces himself (didn’t these two meet last night?) and asks Celso to go get Lety. He pretends to talk on his cell phone.

Omar walks into Fernando’s office and asks if he can ask Fernando a question. Fernando hushes him. Omar asks about the balance. Fernando quickly says that she’s working on it, but he’s more preoccupied that Tomas is taking her to La Noir tonight. Omar insists that Fernando take Lety out tonight. Not going to happen! If Lety’s going to fix things with Tomas, she’s going to do the same with Me! This little game is going to end; I’m tired of all of it!

Will Lety and Tomas really go to La Noir?
Is Fernando's jealousy coming to a boil?
Will Jasmin quit Conceptos?
Did Marcia fall off the face of the planet?

Have a great night everyone! Until next week!

"Oxigenada" is not in my dictionaries. Has anybody been able to say what it means, exactly?

I love Fernando when he's on fire with jealousy..It is his finest hour and really funny..

Oxigenada? That's a reference to her peroxide or bleached hair, which it seems has totally diminished the brain of Alicia.Maureen

Why oh why does Luigi put up with Yasmin? Why does anyone put up with Luigi?
I wouldn't mind if Marcia, Luigi and Yasmin fell off the face of the planet!
I love Fernando's jealousy too. I would love to see Lety with a real smile once again.
Thanks so much Amanda for a great recap!

I've asked my Latina friends the meaning of "Oxigenada." One of my Latina friends said an "Oxigeneda" is someone who dyes their hair blond. Another one of my Latina friends said that it is like calling someone a "bubble/ airhead." Hope that this gets us closer to the meaning of "Oxigeneda?" Thanks for the great recap!!!!!

I had asked a Mexican friend about "la Oxi" recently, and it literally means the bleached one, but you can tell from the context of the show that it's just a derogatory term for someone like her who has all the phony aspects of a bleached blonde . . .

My mistake - I thought it meant "airhead" and have been translating it thusly all along...

BTW, I love they way they have established many epithet/nicknames on this show. Such as the "giraffe" and the "mustached tlacoyo." This helps me learn more idiomatic Spanish.

Here is a quote from my Mexican friend about the tlacoyo. "tlacoyo- I could be wrong, but I am almost certain that it is fuzzy fruit or veggie. Many fruits and veggies have different names when you go south. they keep their original name in native tongue like Nahuatl. Like the word Aguacate is an original Nahualt word however that is used everywhere now but because it is an original fruit to the area it has keept its Nahuatl name. Nahualt is the Aztec language which is still spoken in central and southern Mexico. So many words we use in our daily language especially are influenced by Nahuatl especially populations from Mexico city or south of there. It think it is funny that Alicia uses it because she claims to be so high class and it is funny that she uses and indiginous word."

Also for Yazmin, there's the "quitamarido," which is "the homewrecker." (or literally husband stealer). (I just confirmed that with my best friend, who happens to be the satellite manager for Univision! She was a Spanish major in college (and not a native speaker), but she started working there many years ago to use her Spanish, and worked her way up. She is completely fluent.

Also, she can help with transmission problems. If you notice transmission problems, as some of you reported the other day with your captioning, you can let me know, and I will pass the word to her. She can track down the right person to fix the problem. (I would have to know your local cable company too).

Sorry for this long multi subject post.

A friend of mine from Columbia said Oxi means airhead--someone with nothing in the brain (Bimbo comes to mind), even though the literal meaning is "one with bleached hair." I think alicia is the perfect symbol for the blondie jokes except that she has a mean and manipulative character as well. Bottom line ---a derogatory term used to describe a phony, stupid woman who has nothing of substance to offer!
On another note--I echo the feeling about Luigi. Why do nice people sit around and tolerate his pathetically inhumane comments? No one seems to have the nerve to speak up to him or tell him off. I guess some (cuartel) are fearful that he will demean them even further and others need his creative expertise and can't afford to offend him (Carola)

A tlacoyo is type of corncake, usually stuffed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tlacoyo

I agree about Luigi - when the cuartel wanted to come up and hug him for winning the award, he was a real horse's ass. And, I wish Irma would tell him to knock it off, since he seems to respect her opinion.

Still lovin Fern, I just can't help myself.

Wouldn't it be easier if Alicia became a hooker? At least that would have spared her that horrible eveing at La Noir. Tomas is out of control and he is making me nauseous. I feel this whole week has been the calm before the storm(the meeting)and I feel we are all in for a bumpy ride. Between this novela, this website and YOutube, I wll probably loose my job and have no Thanksgiving dinner on the table for my family. I think I need an intervention. I'm giving thanks tomorrow for all the wonderful recappers

Amanda, thanks to your excellent recap I now know that Yazmin has no modeling future ahead of her at Conceptos. How lovely to find her ambitions stiffled there!

P.S. What did Fern say in his car during the teasers for the next episode? I heard him say Lety's full name and then could make out the rest.

I think it's okay to translate "Oxi" as "airhead." It implies the blondness, the dumbness, etc. I think we've all explained it pretty well. :-)

As for the preview, I'll to re-watch it when I get home. If someone gets to it first please feel free!

I think we should do an opinion poll concerning what should happen to hateful people like Luigi, Omar, Alicia, Yazmin and yes, even "Maaaarcia"". for example, I like the idea of Omar discovering that he has no problem blowing off any serious relationship with women because he is really GAY and is now hopelessly in love with Luigi, who in turn now hopelessly is in love sombody else( and can't stand Omar).... I think Alicia should have to be PERMANENTLY involved (married) with Tomas, only to discover he has no money, and must go and live with him and his domineering mother! Tomas would then find out the REAL character of his beloved Alicia (shrew) and have to deal with her AND his mother--plus Alicia's BAD cooking!! I'm still working on Ariel and Marcia....

Maricruz, I like your observation. I think what is interesting about Tomas is that when he acquires marking must-have possessions of the in-crowd--like the sports car and the clothes--he becomes absolutely obnoxious and as condescending to people below him. Witness his treatment of Celso last night. What was that about?!!! Calling him "Joven" and to get a move on getting Lety because he..."tengo prisa". He even thought it was funny bossing Celso around. If I were Celso I would have turned the dog loose on him.

Lety, on the other hand, has proven she can grow a spine but still remain kind and loyal to those who deserve such treatment no matter where there are on the social spectrum.

I think the commenters and recappers on the Fea blog are brilliant and should be advising Univision during the taping of their next telenovelas. At the very least, I think Univision should hire someone who regularly reads these blogs so they can get a grip on what we most enjoy and appreciate, what we can and cannot tolerate and what we think are appropriate consequences for villians! Yes, I know the script may already be written, but directors and actors themselves often modify behavior and costuming as they go along.
Which brings me to another point, does anyone on these blogs have any connection to someone working at Univision because I also would love to pursue the idea of a group of us meeting and going to the CRISTINA show at the end of one of these novelas and there is no address/email/phone- nothing on the univision site for contacting Cristina. I think a good idea is to write to her rprivately in advance about a group of "telenovelistas" who would like to get tickets to her post telenovela taping. That way, we perhaps could plan in advance.
I will post this second comment again on tomorrow's blog for everyone to see.

Dear anonymous,

I think what Fernando said in the preview was something along the lines of "Okay, Lety, if you want to play games..." and then he drives off after her.

Sorry I couldn't translate directly. I woke up with a cold this morning and it sounds like I have fluid in my ears so I couldn't hear what he said all that well. Someone please correct me if I heard wrong!

AS obnoxious as Tomas is right now, I keep trying to remind myself that Alicia is to Tomas what Fernando is to Lety. His pining over her photo isn't much worse that Lety's pining over her diary. And while I hate the way he is blindly being played by Alicia, In the beginning Fernando did the same to Lety. Just trying to give tormented Tomas a break. Happy Holidays All and thanks for the recaps.

Rhonda

Amanda, thanks for letting me know what Fern said in the teasers. I like this show so much I hate missing any dialogue.
