La Fea Más Bella #149-150 12/30/10 Setting up the dominoes.

Capitulo 149.
Read Chapel Hill Fiddler’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Ali calls Tom and sets up a date tonight, so she can get Ariel off her case. Ariel reminds Marcia he plans to sell his shares in Conceptos. Marcia tells him that Lety’s novio works for Filmo Imagen. Ariel tells Ali that she’ll end up selling her body to survive, with one guy or another.

2. Fernando gets the call that Conceptos won at Cannes. He runs past Marcia to Lety’s office to share the excitement with her. Marcia follows and is she mad!

3. Marcia tells Fern that she knows he took Lety to Mesón, and Lety was muy cariñosa with him. Marcia thinks it’s out of line for Lety to be at a place like that, and she tells Fern to put Lety in her place. She also reports that Ariel plans to sell his share of Conceptos. She suggests that then he’ll stop competing with Fernando.

4. Marcia orders Lety to take her wedding invitations to Saimon, to rub it in that she’s marrying Fernando and Lety shouldn’t be cariñosa with him. Fern tries to stop Lety and he says, “I know what you’re thinking.” She answers, “You don’t have the slightest idea.”

5. Fern tells Omar that Ariel plans to sell off shares that are embargoed, and Lety put a condition on making the balance report – that he cancel the wedding. F: And I can’t handle the idea of marrying Marcia. O: Are you seriously considering canceling? F: Yes.

6. The witches calls Le Noir and finds out Ali was there with Tom. They report it to Lety.

Capitulo 150.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. The witches tell Lety about Ali and Tom, and Lety pretends to be hurt. Lety is furious when she calls Tom, and she gives it to him with both barrels. Fern and Omar hear it, and they assume it’s a fit of jealousy. Omar tells Fern to talk to her calmly, get her to do the balance, then crush her like a tick.

2. Fern tells Lety she seemed very jealous, and Lety denies that.

3. Tom resigns Filmo Imagen for ethics violations. He remorsefully says goodbye to his chances with Alicia, when Lety calls. She knows about his date tonight with Alicia, and he hides in the bushes. Verrry interesting! Then she arranges a date at Le Noir with him just to torment Fernando who is listening from his office.

4. In Lety’s fantasy, Fernando tells her he’s dying of jealousy, and it’s for her, not Conceptos. He doesn’t care about the company or the meeting, only about her. Fernando remembers PG’s words again, and again he chooses Conceptos.

5. Lola tells Efren that he can’t claim half of their house until they are divorced. Her motive is that she can’t force him to pay child support until they are divorced.

6. Fernando tells Omar, “Game over!” If Leticia is going to clarify things with Tomás, she is going to clarify things with him, too.

Reminder. No Fea on Friday.

The second half of the second episose is entirely blither. Fernando concludes that the company comes first, and then it's all blither until the last 40 seconds in his office with Omar.

Today's episodes were a bit of a breather after the intensity of the past week. But today laid the groundwork for some intense moments down the road.
1. Ariel finds out the company name, Filmo Imagen, and he plans to investigate it.
2. Marcia heard that Lety was cariñosa with Fern at Mesón, and Fern ran past Marcia to Lety with the Cannes news.
3. Fern found out that Ariel plans to sell off his shares. Even the false balance won't hide the embargo when Ariel tries to sell the shares.
4. The parents arrive tomorrow, and the meeting is only four days away.
5. Lety is holding the doctored balance hostage.

The world is crowding in on Lety too. The wedding is only days away, and she can't avoid the reminders - the dress, the parents, the invitations, the talk of the house.

I did a double-take on Arte Johnson's picture. LOL! And welcome comic relief amidst the rapidly escalating tension of this phase of the story.

Did I hear correctly yesterday that the two eggs at Le Noir cost 450 pesos (about 40 dollars)? Because they were "French"? (I don't know what French eggs are. I think that was the waiter's idea of a little joke.) When Tomas was mooching another breakfast at Lety's the next morning, I couldn't help wondering if he had a new appreciation for all the free food he gets at Chez Julieta!

I think today's theme song should be from "My Fair Lady" with Lety singing "Just you wait Fernando Mendiola! Just you wait!"
And why doeen't Alicia smack Ariel? He kept going on and on about pimping her out to his friends. It shows his lack of morals, ethics, feelings, and respect for others. At least Fernando has those once in a while.
Fernando imitating Alicia, priceless!
Happy New Year to all!

DRAT! For some reason my Univision station is off the air probably due to the storms we are having. At least these were just filler episodes.

I too wish Alicia would just turn around and clock Ariel but I guess she doesn't dare because he is Marcia's brother and an owner of the company.

Was talking to some writer friends about the different ways men and women see themselves and it struck me that Fern's concern for Conceptos and his presidency are absolutely correct. Men define themselves by what they do not by who they are. Go to any party and watch men meet each other and see how fast the start talking about their work and positions. It's also why so many men have problems when it comes time for them to retire. Since Lety has so little experience around men she doesn't get it and that just fuels her rage.

Actually Lety's behavior, hiding what she knows and planning to extract revenge on Fern and Omar is not really consistent with female behavior. Most women having found that letter would have confronted Fern immediately or gone and keyed his car, ripped up his clothes, tossed his stuff out the window or like Elin Woods taken a golf club to his car. While women might think about revenge it would be more driven to sock it to him personally. Stealing the company involves hurting too many other people. Just as women writers often get men's reactions wrong male writers are guilty, even more so of the same thing hence so many novela heroines getting on the revenge train.

Your comments about male vs female behaviours are generally true -- but Lety hasn't really had the typical female experience and she has been defined by and valued for her business acumen. So maybe it is logical for her to exact her revenge in an atypical way.

Halftime over -- back to the game. Imagine! Syracuse in a bowl game after so many years.

Güera from Syracuse

Even if Lety confronted him, what would the end result be? He would still marry Marcia within a week.

And let's imagine that he even canceled the wedding (though there has been NO evidence that he would have the cajones to do that. What would the end result be? Remember at Meson, he was ashamed to be seen with Lety? I don't mean the kisses he refused. He was not even willing to introduce her as a business associate, nor even hold her chair. If he's too gutless to even be seen to accompany her, would he somehow have the guts to go public with their relationship?

And since we're engaging in fantasy, let's take it to the limit. What if Fernando even went so far as to marry Lety? Then what? His love is weak and selfish. He comes first in everything. He doesn't even THINK about how his decisions will affect her. When a crisis arises he throws her under the bus. What kind of marriage would that be?

Now, about the balance. Maybe she will doctor it and maybe she won't. Regardless, the whole financial mess will come to light when Ariel tries to sell his shares.

No matter what Lety does in the relationship, confront him or torment him, either way she loses. And no matter what Lety does about the balance, the family will find out about the embargo.

The only ingredient that will make ANY difference in the outcome of any of this is Fernando - what he does with Marcia, what he does with Lety, and what he does with his father. Will he man up or continue being a selfish child?

And Syracuse is doing well, Güera. I wrote a longish note and it got zapped by the computer.

Only caught the last few minutes today. Out of town guests, a birthday and a funeral are all competing for my time but wanted to thank everyone for the interesting discussions, the recappers for all their hard work past and present, and Paula for creating this unique site where re-treads and newbies can enjoy this incredible telenovela together.

Paula, we learned a fun slang expression in Llena yesterday. One character accused the other of smoking a ton of pot "tú fumaste una silla de mimbre!"
Somehow the thought of smoking a wicker chair just cracks me up. Hope you never have occasion to use it....but if you do...you're ready.

Happy New Year everyone.

I don't know. If Lety had confronted him about the letter right away, before she started confusing and scaring him with her passive-aggressive behavior, I think he might actually have had an epiphany - realized what was really at stake, stepped up his game, broken things off with Marcia, admitted to his failure as president, and faced the music.

I know that sounds like something that could happen only in the ultimos capitulos of a standard telenovela, but it wouldn't have to be a quick and simple ride to the finish, any more than it would be in real life. The stress of having to rebuild one's professional reputation, and being an outcast within one's family and social circle, would be a story in itself. And they'd still both have a lot of maturing to do.

But yeah, it really is too late now. Seeing this side of Lety gives Fernando good reason to fear taking a chance on her now. I really hadn't thought of that before Marta pointed it out - she's a different Lety.

Paula,I guess I didn't quite understand what you were going to do with Thomas' picture. That was too funny.

I paid closer attention to some of the minor scenes today. Thomas who, I don't usually care for was a hoot with his Elvis hair and impression. I also thought Don Erasmo was a stich when he was making fun of Thomas.

Always enjoy the Fernando /Omar give and take. Also enjoyed the Lety /Fernando confrontation in his office when he acuses her of being jelous. He got so close to her face it almost looked like he was going to kiss her.

Also got a kick out of Fernandos line to Omar after Lety left the office, noting she didn't even have her "Facial tick,"

Thanks again Paula. Melinama as always your recaps are so much fun. And thanks Amanda for the second part.

Pata, I really love the pictures that you contribute to these recaps. Thank you. :-)

Paula,
Could you clarify the order of events that are happening? Lost in translation to me are 1. The Cannes (which was today) 2. The Cannes Party 3. The Boda 4. The Meeting.
They are all together time wise, but I can't understand which order they are suppose to happen. I do know it has been said, but I can't figure it out. But I do know the Cannes was today and they won.
Best scene today was when Fern told Marcia, just a second, went running past her, and STRAIGHT to Lety. Wheee so much fun.....If only Marcia wasn't hot on his tail, the scene could have gone on.......
Diann

Diann, I'll label the days for the sake of clarity. Remember that Fea almost never has weekends. Conceptos works 7 days per week, just like a novela cast and crew. But they got back from Cuernavaca on a Sunday, so that will be a reference point.

Mon. Lety found the letter.
Tues. Yuri event.
Wed. Lety buys the car.
Thur. The date at Meson. Tom & Ali date at Noir.
Fri. They win Cannes (today's episode). Tom is scheduled to date Alicia Friday night.
Sat. Fernando's parents arrive.
Sun. ?
Mon. The event to celebrate Cannes.
Tue. The board meeting.
Two days later, Thursday, is the wedding.

I think Lety's continued fury is a little more understandable if you consider that it was only three days from when she found the letter until she rejected him outside Meson.

But don't rely too heavily on that schedule. Novela time is really warped.

Novela time is always all over the place but sometimes it helps to have a least a clue of how much time has passed. It always made me laugh that the horse commercial got made in two days yet Luigi and Co seemed to spend weeks in Germany to do their FIFA work.

I've made no secret of the fact that Lety annoys me. It struck me the other day that part of it over and above her annoying mugging and self pity is that her actions now make her look as deceitful and dishonest as the man she is trying to destroy.

A while back someone posted all the trite things that are stock in a novela and how LFMB avoids them. I have two things to add to the list;
1 - There is no faithful priest hovering around dishing out advice although PG guy could be a substitute.
2- Nobody is unfairly or fairly sent to prison although Lety, Tomas and Fern could all have been sent because of their illegal activities.

Paula,
Thanks for the order of events. Ok now I know the meeting is suppose to happen before the wedding. I think there is going to be something major at the meeting and now I don't think Fern will marry Marcia. Just my thoughts, I know that YOU know though!!!
Also, thanks for putting into perspective that there really has been a short amount of time between Lety finding the letter and Cannes. It kinda explains why she still is SO angry.
Diann

I am not sure that Lety or Tomas have done anything illegal unless you count cooking the books. As I undertand it, FilmoImagin is their company.

I want to comment on the general feeling that Fern should throw the company over for Lety. It sounds romantic, but his parent worked all their lives for the company. They depend on it now. I don't think it is romantic to throw all that away because he has a girlfriend. Personally, I think it is more responsible of him to keep the company afloat. His methods are lousy, but they appear to be the best he can do.

This plays in to why Lety an Fern would be happy together even though their backgrounds are so different. They thing that interests and holds them both is the business. That tie is stronger than social class.

Actually what Lety, Fern and Tomas have done is extremely illegal. FI is a shell company created to hide Conceptos assets from their creditors. Tomas has remarked several times that what they did and are doing is illegal but Lety just ignores him when it is convenient for her to do so. Fern has unwittingly set the Company up to be stolen by Lety and Tomas. Then of course at the time he believed he had a faithful side kick not the vindictive vengeful, woman his actions turned her into.

Paula since Fern can't seem to get the right end of the stick at the moment does his next major gaffe occur before or just after the forthcoming junta. I can't remember when it happened but it was another one of those major turning points.

decie girl, I'm not quite sure which gaffe you're talking about, and if I did know, I'm not sure I could give you a good answer without spoilers. You can e-mail me if you'd like; paulah88@hotmail.com

Hi All,
Will anyone here be watching Triunfo de Amor?
Starts manana. (As the thousand commercials for it have aired over the last how many weeks)
I have to see what all this amor for William Levy is all about.
I have a difficult time believing he could replace my Jaime!!! :)
Diann

Diann

I might give it a try. It has a pretty good cast but I can not stomach Levy so how long I stick with it is anyone's guess. He gives me the creeps, there is something about his eyes that is very unattractive to me. No way could he ever replace Jamie and his beautiful expressive eyes.

Decie girl,
Okay, I will be watching those eyes.
You are right, I don't think anyone can replace Jaime's eyes. (Or his lips. HeeHee)
Diann

Or his energy.
Or his expressive face.
Or his beautiful movement.
Or his exuberance.
Or his humor.
Or his quick-thinking improvisation.
Or his undeniable presence.
Or his intensity.

The list goes on and on!

Paula,
I agree with you 100%
And the list DOES go on and on.....
Diann

Love the Tomas Mora/Arte Johnson side-by-side. Funny stuff and a nice momentary reprieve from all the angst and misunderstandings.

Lety's fantasies are usually very fun but her fantasy in this episode was sad. I realized that if Fernando had really done what she imagined she wouldn't have believed him anyway, so the fantasy was more about what she wished her feelings could be rather than what she wished Fernando would say.

Thanks everyone for the recaps and screen shots.

When I looked for a picture of Arte Johnson in the bushes, I discovered that Avila (Tomás) resembles him A LOT. Check these three photos, especially the first one.
The most similar,
also this one,
and less so in this one.
