La Fea Más Bella #176 12/28/06 Adios, Mr Mumbles

Tomas is still in the hot seat in the boardroom. He can’t say where Lety is or when she’ll return. Marcia and Ariel think this is very suspicious. Tomas says that if something were truly suspicious, then no one would have shown up on Lety’s behalf, but here he is to answer their questions. The lawyers say Tomas’s presence is not sufficient; they must have Lety present. They agree to reconvene when Lety can attend.

The Bellezas thank Lety for saving their butts. They were very nervous during the history quiz but she helped them get over it. Lety tells them that they are beautiful and smart. They agree but say Lety is way smarter. Carolina hears this and joins in, saying that if they’re impressed now, they should see Lety manage a large company’s finances. The bellezas are very impressed. Lety is thankful for their praise but she says true intelligence is achieved when you learn to understand nature (obviously this is Aldo’s influence coming through). She goes on to talk about letting the beauty of nature take their worries away. Nature is like music; you have to let its rhythm move you along (or something like that). As she talks, Aldo walks up behind her. He signals to the bellezas to keep quiet. When Lety realizes he’s there, she becomes embarrassed that he heard her. Aldo says “Ah so, the student surpasses the master.” He tells her he is proud of her, and we get a nice close-up of Lety’s smile and her tan, which is coming along nicely!

Back at Irmita’s house, her daughter Rebeca sits on her bed where her father is lying. She tells him she forgives him and he mumbles “Great, but what about my son Jorge?” [The ungrateful geezer!] Irma and Rebeca struggle to give an answer, and finally come up with “He couldn’t find a flight.” He sees through the lie and mumbles some more and feels sorry for himself. He says, “I wish I could tell Jorge that I loved him” just as Jorge walks into the bedroom. Jorge joins them at the bed and also forgives dad.

Tomas becomes very nervous at Ariel’s threats of using “alternate methods” to get back the company. Humberto calms him down and tells him to inform Lety of how important it is that she show up in person. Ariel hands Tomas a phone, but Tomas says he can not call her. He must wait until she calls him. He promises to give her the message and deliver her response by tomorrow morning. Humberto gets up to leave and the rest of the board stares at Fern.

Humberto walks out to the lobby and Alicia stops him to get the gossip. Of course, he is in no mood and cuts her off.

Fernando asks Tomas if they can speak alone. Tomas says he’s in a hurry but Marcia says that surely he has time to speak to Fernando, who is obviously is very concerned about Lety [do I detect a bit of sour grapes?].

In the living room, Luigi is entertaining Irmita’s granddaughter. Irma, Rebeca, and Jorge walk in. The look on their faces says Mr. Mumbles is gone [What a gyp, I really hoped the selfish turd would provide a perfectly reasonable explanation for abandoning them before he kicked the bucket.] Irma takes Luigi and the grandkid into the kitchen.

Jorge and Rebeca have a heartwarming reunion chat in the living room. They note how ironic that dad, who abandoned them so long ago, has now brought them back together.

In her kitchen, Irma grills Luigi about taking her phone book from her purse. She figured out that he took her used the book to find and call Jorge. Luigi tries to defend himself, but Irmita stops him and thanks him for convincing Jorge to come home.

Lety, Caro, and Aldo are getting out of their car. Aldo has brought them to the top of a hill to see a beautiful view of city and the water. Lety again tells Aldo how embarrassed she is that he heard her nature talk. She feels like she stole his words. He tells her to fogetaboutit! Just then a tow truck pulls up next to them carrying a smashed minivan. He is impactado.

After a commercial break, it’s suddenly night time and it’s raining. Aldo walks to the car. There are sirens and police lights. He nears the car and looks at a pretty woman lying, presumably dead, in the passenger seat. He screams “Nooooooo!” ...Wait, this is a memory! He snaps out of it, and it’s daytime again. Caro and Lety ask him what’s wrong, and suddenly, but Aldo is acting very un-Aldo-like. He tells them he wants to be alone, and he walks towards the minivan. Caro perceptively explains that everyone has their story, and surely Aldo has one too. He continues to examine the smashed minivan on the tow truck. He gets in and looks at the shattered windshield. Caro and Lety are confused and worried, but they do as Aldo asks and leave.

Tomas and Fern go to the president’s office. Fern asks Tomas to please ask Lety to think about this. Surely she is hurt and probably wants revenge against Fern, but she can not continue her insolence toward the board. Tomas retorts that the board has not behaved very nicely with Lety, so what do they expect? Fern says he understands, but by not showing up, Lety is giving the impression that she is running from them. He asks Tomas to beg Lety to rethink this. Fern walks around the desk to Tomas, and pulls up a chair next to him. He swivels Tomas’s chair around to face him. He tells Tomas that, as a personal favor to Fern, he should please ask Lety to call him. He’s dying to talk to her. Tomas asks Fern to remember everything that he did to hurt Lety. Fern says he will never forget it. He says he will give Lety the message, but he will not defend Fern to her. He adds that Lety gave everything, her whole life, to Fern and his company. She deserves more than their stupid suspicions.

Tomas walks out of the president’s office, and the cuartel pounce on him. They want to know where Lety is and when she will be back. He ducks so that Alicia can not see him. The cuartel duck too. He ducks further, and so does the cuartel, until everyone is sitting like pre-schoolers on the floor. They tell him they are dying form lack of information but he does not spill the beans.

At Irmita’s, Luigi brings up the practical matter of the burial. Rebeca tells him not to worry, she and Jorge will raise the funds required to bury Mr. Mumbles. Irma tells her kids that Luigi is like another son to her. Jorge welcomes Luigi to the family [is Jorge qualified to do that, seeing as how he himself has not visited his mom or sister in 2 decades?].

Caro takes Lety shopping. Lety is still wondering what’s wrong with Aldo. As they walk, Lety complains about her sore legs (from running on the beach with Aldo) and shows Caro how her legs are shaking from fatigue. As they enter a clothing store, Lety tries to get out of it by saying that she does not have money to shop. Caro says she can deduct it from Lety’s pay, because Lety needs to be presentable for upcoming events. Caro picks something up and shows it to Lety. Lety says it’s too “naked.”

Tomas pulls his Baretta trench coat over his head and tries to sneak by Alicia, but she catches him and grabs his coat. He tells her to calm down, but she hits him with the coat and yells that he still has her 500,000 pesos. She will sue and have him sentenced to life in prison. He tries to tell her that it’s really not so bad. He tries to get away but she stands in the elevator door, spread-eagle, blocking his way. She calls him desgraciado (disgraceful) and yells that she will not let him get away with this. Lucky for him, Marcia and Mama Tere walk into the lobby and demand to know what’s going on. Alicia, who is still spread across the elevator door in her micro-mini skirt, is embarrassed. Tomas takes the opportunity to excuse himself and takes off toward the stairs. Marcia explains to Mama Tere that it’s been so long since Alicia’s seen a man that, when she does see one, she loses control. Mama Tere says “what a horror” and walk away. Marcia says she is disgusted that Alicia slept with Tomas. Alicia responds that at least Tomas dresses nicely, while Fern has been with Lety, who is no prize either.

Tomas falls asleep on the bus, and the neighborhood bullies board the bus and wake him up. They mess with him and ask if they sent Lety away to live in the zoo. Tomas says that, as a matter of fact, Lety is in Acapulco working a very important public relations gig for the Nuestra Belleza pageant. Tomas jumps off the bus and the bullies follow him to Lety’s house. As usual, Robopop comes out and saves Tomas from further humiliation.

Robopop asks Tomas why he had to go to Conceptos. Tomas says that they wanted to compare some documents at the office with the documents here at home. Robopop asks if they are satisfied with findings, otherwise, he will go down there himself and set everything straight.

Fern goes to see Omar for the daily rehash. Omar, Mr Busy Executive -- who claimed on Tuesday’s show to have lots and lots of work to do -- is very busy indeed, sitting in the empty vice-presidential office watching t.v. Actually, he is watching coverage of the Nuestra Belleza pageant. Fern yells at him for watching t.v. Omar says that nothing relieves stress like watching the bellaza honeys shake their thang. Fern is not amused. They fulfill their daily rehash obligations; which boils down to: they still don’t where Lety is. As they end their conversation, they stand with their backs to the t.v. Had they turned around, they would see Lety smiling and waving at the camera.

Tomas assures Robopop that everything went fine at the office and they were satisfied with the documents Tomas presented. Robopop says they need to think of plan to earn money, because he does not want to mooch off of Lety and Tomas can not continue to live off his mom’s bakery forever. Julieta agrees that the money situation is not good.

When Erasmo goes upstairs, Julieta corners Tomas and asks him how it really went at his meeting. Tomas admits that it went badly, but then says he can not tell her why. Julieta says she is going crazy with all the secrecy and demands to know what’s going on.

Fern tells Omar to turn off the t.v. Omar, sensing that Fern is in a worse mood than usual, asks Fern if he wouldn’t like to be in Acapulco with the sun and the beach and the bellezas. Her says he just told Marcia that he loves Lety. He yells that he is not interested in any of the Acapulco crap that Omar is talking about.

In Marcia’s office, Mama Tere asks Marcia what’s wrong. Marcia takes a deep breath and tells her that Fern just confirmed that he fell in love with Lety. Mama T laughs and says “Yeah right! That's terrible joke.”

Caro and Lety continue to argue about clothes. Caro does not like Lety’s choices (we don’t get to see them, they’re already in the shopping bags) and her patience has worn thin again.

After some more prodding, Tomas finally spills the beans and tells the story of why Fern created Filmo Imagen… he leaves out the parts with the sex, lies, and Carvajalmarks, but he does tell her that the truth about Conceptos, Filmo Imagen, and Lety’s ownership of both was brought to light at the board meeting, and that’s why she ended up quitting. Julieta is impactada and slightly confused. She’s worries that Lety will go to jail. Tomas explains that, while the dealings were slightly on the unethical side, they were technically legal, so Lety will not go to jail.

Omar goes into Fern’s office to ask if Tomas or Lety have called yet. Fern is sitting at the desk. He shakes his head "no" but is very intently looking at his open wallet. Omar the Imbecile grabs his wallet to see what's inside and then ricules Fern for carrying a picture of the "little gargoyle." Fern calmy gets up, takes the wallet back, puts it in his back pocket, and walks around the desk to where Omar is sitting. Then he GRABS Omar by the collar and slams him into the cabinet behind him. "Call her a gargoyle one more time, I want to see if you dare!" Omar, I think, is so impactado that he poo'ed his pants! GO FERN!! Finish him off!!!

Is this the end of Fern's friendship with Omar?
Will we have a double funeral for Mr Mumbles and Omar the Imbecile?
And since we're having funerals, will Lety finally get to bury her granny clothes?

Thanks a bunch for the recap! My Fern withdrawal symptoms definitely eased last night. I'm glad he was approaching Lety's absence from how it would impact her, instead of the effect on him & the company. And how he didn't try to defend himself against Tomas' charges.

Just when I'm ready to write off Luigi, he has a story arc like this. Like Marcia, I guess the writers are pointing out that they're not cookie-cutter baddies; they do have some decency.

And, hallelujia, Fernando! I was yelling at the TV, "Smack him, smack him!". That shove was almost as good as a smack!

Tomas was a mentsh in the boardroom.

I think Alicia is gaining weight as this show progresses, thus all the comments about her figure. She is wearing an iron corset of some kind so we only see the results below the hem.

Luigi has been very cute with Irma. Hope that human side of his character isn't over now that the husband kicked it (I feel cheated that we never got to hear his lame excuse - maybe it was so lame the writers just sighed and crossed it out).

I am very tired of Lety whining and complaining about a free trip to Acapulco.

I still like Aldo.

Note that Fern STILL framed his discussion with Tomas as being about Conceptos and what was good for the company (and saving his own butt). Bad Fern.

Thanks so much for the recap, Alma! I wouldn't enjoy the show near as much without all of the recappers' hard work. I'm trying to learn Spanish and it's going really slowly.

"Omar, I think, is so impactado that he poo'ed his pants!"

This made me laugh out loud. Which might not be such a good thing since I'm supposed to be entering my boss' expense right now instead of reading about last night's show!

Teri

This show is turning me into a bad person and an idiot. First, I'm giving my husband high fives on the death of Rafael, aka Mr. Mumbles. Then I'm yelling at TEEVEE characters, as though they could hear me. "Turn around you fools, look at Lety on your screen!" "Tomas, you idiot, why are you telling the local riffraff Lety's wherabouts?" I couldn't believe he'd spill the beans to them so easily, when he'd held out with Fern and la Feas.

How close for Fern and Omar! I kept yelling, "Idiots, turn around, turn around you idiots!" That was a big disappointment that she was so close and they missed it.
I thought the scene with Aldo and the smashed van was very strange. I don't like it when they get off the main Fern/Lety track.
Luigi was very sweet with the family. What was he saying to the little girl about the feas?
Thanks so much,
Carrie L.

Thanks, Alma. I loved your last line. The part about the double funeral for Mr. Mumbles and Omar really made me laugh.

Way to go, Fernando. Let that idiot Omar know how far over the line he has crossed. It was good to see Fernando in more scenes. I missed him although I, too, like Aldo. No other man could possibly compete with Don Fernando.

When I first started wathcing LFMB and reading these comments I thought you people were really overboard talking about these characters and what they might do as if they truly existed. It didn't take a week for me to be right in there with all the other crazy for LFMB fans.

Nuts and proud of it.

Connie

Great recap, Alma!

It was really amusing to see Lety waving at the screen with O and F having their backs to it. In the later scene, she was dancing around on the screen in the middle of the bellezas (toward the back of the group) again, and they still didn't turn around and see her. Very nice touch on the writers' part.

I agree, Melinama, that it looks like Alicia is gaining weight. I thought it was just my wide-screen television that stretches the picture so much (new this month) but you confirmed it's her. No wonder she is such a witch--she can't breathe with that corset so tight.

Tomas needs to learn when to keep his mouth SHUT. He was more impressive in the meeting than he's ever been, but that must be the time limit of his ability to think before he speaks--ten minutes or so. After that, the bus ride......I can't help but think that the thugs are going to end up conveying to Fern that Lety is in Acapulco. Hm.

If Lety would send Robopop to the junta room, maybe he could intimidate Ariel the same way he does the thugs??

Jeanne

I guess the best explanation we're going to get for Rafael abandoning his family is just what Irmita accused him of - going off with another woman. When she accused him of that, he never replied.

Luigi talking to the granddaughter about the feas - I kinda sped through that scene so didn't make a great effort to understand, but I think he was pointing to little figures on her backpack and saying that they're like the feas. (Perhaps like a giraffe, penguin, etc.?) Maybe someone else could confirm this because it's little more than a guess.

Julie is right, there are little cartoons on the kid's backpack and Luigi exclaims that they look like the cuartel. The kid is not really interested, though, and says she wants to hear more about Diva, Luigi's dog. Luigi says "well, she's really hairy" and the kid responds "well duh! she's a dog."

I like Aldo much better in smaller doses like this episode. Also, it's nice that we're starting to see more than just his new-age persona.

I am hoping that the thugs run right over and tell Fern where Lety is so he can take the first flight to Acapulco and then we can see him and Lety in the same shot again.

Considering how the gang didn't fare so well in their previous encounters with Super-Fern, I can't imagine them running to him. I can, however, sorta-imagine maybe Fern scaring it out of them, if it even occurs to him that they would possibly know where she went.

St Loopey, I too was yelling at Fern to beat the *_)@%(&*& out of Omar. I thought it was magnificent the way Fern so calmly got up, walked over to Omar and slammed him against the door. Also, like the rest of you, I was yelling at those two yahoos to turn around and look at the TV. It's a good thing La Fea isn't on late at night, I would be evicted for causing so much noise. As for the thugs, I think it would be plausible for them to tell Fern where Lety is. If he was outside her house they might gather around his car like they've done before and obviously Lety's name could come up and there you have it. Do hope that Lety's new clothes are better. I know she's not going to turn into a raving beauty, and I don't want her to, but really it's been long enough now to see her in something a bit more appropriate for her.

That's the scene I pictured, Ellen. I just see them hanging when Fern shows up again to try and get noticias about Lety, and then.....

Lety had a short-sleeved sweater and dress a day or two ago, the first time I remember seeing her in something without long sleeves (except PJs, maybe). That actually looked closer to conventional clothing than anything so far other than the evening dress Caro persuaded her to try. That was when I thought I noted a metal frame-looking brace on her arm similar to some neck/head braces. But, I could be seeing things....

Jeanne

Oh, well, blame my lack of Spanish and complete committment to Fern - I do tend to get blinded by his beauty;) I was just hopefully thinking that he was taking some of the blame on himself for the state of Conceptos & Lety bailing.

And, oooh, the TV scene! The one time you want Omar to leer, and he turns away! I really thought he might be the one to spot her since he spotted F&L's p.d.a. in Munich and distracted Luigi & Marcia from seeing it. I thought it would be appropriately ironic if he, who hates the very looks of her & doesn't understand Fern's love, is the one who keeps spotting her at key moments to aid & abet the F&L relationship.

Tomas' character continues to grow as he demonstrates his loyalty to Lety. He not only represented her at the meeting, but he conducted himself in a businesslike manner - never divulging her whereabouts. He also showed maturity and compassion during his conversation with Fernando - especially when he patted Fernando on the shoulder. I believe the scene he had with the thugs set the stage for Fernando learning Lety's whereabouts.
Did anyone hear a spectator shouting out Lety's name when she was at the scenic lookout with Aldo and Carolina? I think it was a LFMB blooper. Also, the salesgirl in the clothing store looked like the same coffee-bearing employee at Conceptos. I could be wrong.

By chance, would anyone happen to know the actor's name who plays Roman (the main thug)?

Thanks for the great recap. It helps to know that I truly understand as much as I do and to also clarify up the things I don't get at all. Of course, all of your wit and humor is the true reason I come to read your recaps and of course to check out what my fellow fea fans think.

Oh was I ever happy last night. My Fern drought is over and let's hope it stays that way. I am more enamored with him than ever. I think it is because he is finally realizing how things really are. I thought his conversation w/ Thomas was wonderful. I especially liked it when he went around the desk---to figuratively and literally put himself on Thomas's side. I think he's funny when he's neurotic, but he melts my heart when he's sincere. And don't even get me started on how he impressed me when he went after Omar. It is about darn time!!! Way to go Fern!!

When Omar and Fern were in the boardroom, I was convinced that Omar had to have seen Lety on the TV screen. I even called my sister after the show to ask her what she thought. Her comment was that Omar was looking at the TV but he is so focused on people's looks, that he didn't even notice Lety and overlooked her because of all of the bellezas. What do you all think?

I think that Alicia has put on some weight, or perhaps they are just squeezing her into tighter clothing---hoping to maximize the bulge in the bust, but forgetting that gravity can also come into play. Either case, she just looks uncomfortable.

I was (also) basically screaming at the tv. "TURN AROUND! TURN AROUND, YOU IDIOTS! SHE'S ON THE SCREEN! TURN, FERNANDO! TURN, OMAR! TURN SOMEONE!!!" When they didn't and Fern turned it off, i muttered, "what MORONs" under my breath.

I very much hope Fern teaches Omar the Imbecile a lesson. Hopefully with violence. *smiles sheepishly*

My aunt watched the original soap, and said in that one Rafael, AKA Mr. Mumbles, was faking being sick. Hmm. Is that true? If so, that is werid that they changed that. ^-^ I was also happy when he died. I'm becoming so mean.

If anyone is interested, here is a not-too-revealing spoiler clip! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKnazcfaQA0

-Jen

oops. Here is the clickable one, I hope. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKnazcfaQA0

Now that you mention it, I did hear someone shout out Lety's name and expected someone to come into the scene BUT still with a cracked rib and pills for pain thought I was hearing things.

I am ashamed of myself. I forgot to thank all the marvelous, hardworking recappers this week. What a great job you do! I'm understanding more and more Spanish as time goes on but I love the recaps, not only to help fill in the blanks, but because you're such a witty, fun group!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY!!!!

I don't know what happened to Rafael in the original. It wasn't in the English recaps, I don't think. The Rafael story only goes up to the day after he showed up, I think. Maybe it was in the Spanish recaps.

I thought Omar was looking at the TV the second time Lety was on, too. Perhaps he was looking so intently for bellezas that he didn't see the fea. :-)

And sometimes we don't recognize people when we unexpectedly see them out of context. Like when I was a kid and I saw my schoolbus driver at the grocery store. Her name was Fran and she had a large, distinctive beehive hairdo that was already a good 15-20 years out of date at that time; I should have recognized her, but I didn't because she didn't have that great big yellow bus attached to her backside.

A more relevant example might be the time Ariel looked right at Fern and Lety kissing at the resort but didn't see them. He never expected to see the two of them together, especially not kissing and extra-specially not in Cuernavaca.

(There's an opposite phenomenon when you're in a crowded place full of people you don't know; everywhere you look, you think you recognize someone but then it turns out you're wrong. Happens a lot at airports. One time I actually DID see someone I knew at the airport; I was so surprised, I didn't know what to do with myself.)

It does seem like Omar could have been looking right at her and totally missed her, as several have suggested, just because he doesn't expect Lety to be in that crowd and in Acapulco. It's also remotely possible he saw her and just isn't going to say anything because he doesn't want her back to answer questions, though I am not sure why that would be....so probably the first theory is better.

I am getting powerfully tired of hearing Teresita and Marcia talking about all the reasons why Fern shouldn't be in love with Lety, why it's impossible, etc. It really highlights how shallow they are. Omar, also, is very shallow. The three of them thrive on $$, good looks, power and prestige. Nothing else shows up on their radar screens. I was almost sorry for Marcia for about ten minutes when she found out about Fern and the wedding was canceled, but she soon gave me plenty of reasons to re-think that.

Jeanne

BTW, do we have another Monday with no LFMB? I don't think I'm gonna like another three-day hiatus.

Jeanne

I'm with the rest of you screaming at the set twice last night. Once with the TV/beauty pagent and then hoping that Omar would finally get clocked by Fern.

The Tomas/Fern scene was nicely done and maybe Tomas will tell Lety how upset Fern is about what he did to her. I live in hope.

As for the bus thing I also think that Fern will go to the house to see if Lety has called and the dumb thugs will give him a load of s**t about Lety and the beauty pagent.

A word to Lety - shut up with the moaning and take Caro's advice. Enough already with the frump look.

I wonder wehat nastiness Omar is going to pull tonight?

Jeanne,

I don't think we are going to have a three day drought. According to my TV guide LFMB is schduled for its regular time. For me that means 7 PM which is playing havoc with my dinners these days.

To answer Jeanne's question from yesterday (why did I find Rafael hard to understand):

Sound quality was bad, Rafael didn't speak clearly, but a bigger problem for me was... I'm not sure what. I think he was using the past conditional tense, maybe, or some crazy thing like that which gave me problems, or maybe it was tortured sentence structure, or maybe it was a surplus of pronouns. (Some tenses use accent marks, which don't show up in the captions.) Plus, he was speaking cryptically, hinting at his impending death but not directly addressing it. So, even with the helpful captions, I couldn't easily parse a lot of what he was saying.

Thanks, all! (And I am so glad to hear Monday is a "go.") Good thing we have a couple of tvs in the house so I won't have to kick the guys out who want to watch football......

Jeanne

Always one more thing....Julie, thanks for that--your recaps are wonderful,so it's clear that if your tv reception is variable, etc., you really are putting lots into it! Maybe it'll be a comfort for you to know that he isn't very understandable even with a good picture and clear captions ('course, my command of Spanish doesn't even begin to approach yours, either). At least he appears to be out of the picture now.

Jeanne

I missed someone shouting Lety's name, I'll have to go back and watch that part of the episode.

Julie--- I totally know what you mean about seeing people out of context of place. Right after I graduated from college I took a trip to Europe and ran into a high school classmate in a Paris cafe. It was so surreal that I was afraid to call her by name in case it really wasn't her. Of course, when I ran into her at Target the next year I had no problem w/ the recognition.

Also, I now watch La Fea in my family room because the TV down there shows accents and tildes in the cap-text. My living room TV only prints it out in all caps. So it depends on the type of TV. Having it printed out correctly really helps. Of course, the pronouns still get me all confused.

Cathy, I had no idea that captions looked different on different tvs - good to know!

Jeanne, the sound and caption problems I was talking about aren't related to reception - I have cable so it's pretty good. It's that the sound mixing on these novelas (and on American soaps as well) is not always Oscar/Emmy quality, and my ear for Spanish is not so great. I can't believe I used to do recaps without captions; well, that explains why I often got things so incredibly wrong. :-)

Thank you all so much for translating the episode plots into English! I like the humor too! I'm still addicted to Tivo-ing and watching the show, but I'm getting tired of Lety's childish whining and am not enamored with Fernando either, with the way he treated Lety and kept leading her on. Aldo seems nice, but he doesn't look too hot either and enough with the schmaltzy new-age rhetoric!

>She calls him desgraciado (disgraceful)

Alma, “disgraceful” is one of the milder meanings in the King’s Spanish. It can also mean “unlucky”, “unhappy” or as I assume what the beautiful Alicia means “miserable swine”.

But on a darker note, Hamel’s Bilingual Dictionary of Mexican Spanish (Mexicanismos) has a different interpretation. It can mean “Cuckold” or “Child of a prostitute” or “Rotten, wretched son of a bitch”.
-Dave

Oh, I was just going to post about desgraciado but Dave beat me to it. It's useful to know that desgraciado may sound like "disgraceful" but actually means... Another such word is "infeliz". So if some guy is being called a desgraciado infeliz it may sound to our innocent anglo ears like "unhappy disgraceful person" but in intensity it's more like st***d f*****g b****d.

Then "desgraciado" is like how the English use "bloody" as a very bad word when it doesn't seem at all bad to us. Hm.

Julie, I think your ear for Spanish is stellar!

I've also found that the captions differ according to the signal I am getting. My tv with the plain old generic cable, no box attached, the captions are the old-fashioned ones, but on the two newer tvs with cable boxes and digital signals allow me to change the color of the captions, the style, and give way more information like accent marks on many programs. Closed captions styles are partly within the television and partly a function of the caption company that did the production, and partly a function of the cable provider's signal.

Some of you will remember I complained to my cable company about the junk captions. They fixed them about a month ago, so they are almost always perfect. One of the VPs for this region called to talk to me (turns out my receptionist's husband works with him at the cable provider, and she fed them some info from me, too). He told me they had to replace old equipment with newer technology to send the CC signal. They never realized how bad the captions for Univision were until I wrote to the corporate office. Then, they got their local Spanish language programming personnel to confirm it and work with them to fix the captions with the new equipment.

In the old days, there was only a single captioning entity, then two, and now anyone with the right software can caption. There is competition all over. The quality of the captions vary widely. These for Univision are pretty good, compared to some I have seen.

Jeanne

Dave, cool! I never heard of Hamel's before. Since it's my birthday - I just rushed over to overstock.com and bought a copy. Can't wait. Thanks for alerting me to this book.

Happy Birthday, Melinama (since I can't remember how to say it in Spanish....Feliz cumpleanos? but I can't figure out the tilde on the Mac).

Jeanne

I agree with your comments Alma about Rafael being an ungrateful old gizzer. In fact my daughter was over and I said to her how typical of a man - instead of being happy the daughter was there, he was lamenting about the son. I too, was yelling at Tomas for blabbing to the thugs. What the hell?
I have never seen an actor with as much range as Jaime Camil. He can melt your heart with one look. My daughter laughs because every night he does something that makes me say "oh Fernie, I love you so." Sandy

P.S. Also typical - Aldo -spouting that new-age crap to Lety when she's suffering but then when it's HIS pain he wants to be left alone. It depends on whose ox is being gored as my sister says.
