Mundo de Fieras - Friday 12/22/06 Bedlam Before the Burial

Candy comes in shortly after Mariangela has found her father dead on the couch. Neither of the two can believe he isn’t really sleeping. They are both shocked and Mariangela cries inconsolably while Candy looks on in horror and disbelief.

Leo attends to Paulina inside the manse. (What do they need him for if their OB-Gyn just left there? Who even called him? Well, at least he isn’t charging yet.) Upstairs he checks Pau’s vital signs and abdomen. He tells them that he does not want to mislead them, but there is some possibility that the baby can be born if they both help and Pau follows instructions.

Jos is trying on all of Mommie Dearest’s jewelry as she tells Mommie that she wants to be sure that Foolish Freddy, before being sent to jail, had filed the new will that made the two of them sole inheritors of Clemente’s huge fortune. Mommie Dearest advises Jos that now she will have to appear the most loving of grieving daughters, and in the meantime she has an appointment to have their jewelry appraised. They may have to sell all of hers, Jos’s and Karen’s jewels because she refuses to let anyone treat them as trashy poor folks no matter what it takes. Jos scowls over her shoulder at her mother when she hears this (and it seems Miriam had better think again).

Otilia decides to let Karen give her a quote on putting a big fashion gala together. She tells Karen that she has only hired her as a favor to her Aunt Dolores. As Karen is leaving Otilia’s office, she overhears Soraya showing Otilia a few new designs. Otilia brags about how poor Miriamcita will soon be selling used clothes on a stool while Otilia’s fashion house becomes #1 in all of Mexico. Karen takes mental notes of their conversation from around the corner in the hallway. (Otilia must not be thinking straight about now, I guess, what with Fickle Freddie in jail, to be putting Mini-Miriam to work for her new fashion house.)

Miriam waits while the jeweler appraises her jewels and then gets the 1st real shock of her life because the jeweler tells her that they are well made fakes and aren’t worth more than a few trinkets. He tells her she has wasted his time and leaves. Miriam remembers then Rogelio telling her about Pedro entering her bedroom, and having the wall safe open, so she now thinks that he was the culprit who substituted her stolen pieces with fakes.

Pedro tells Gabe he has decided to take the scholarship and will be leaving soon. Gabe congratulates him as his “second” son on his decision and hugs abound.

Candy calls Leo to tell him about Clemente and that Mariangela has not stopped crying since she found him. He cannot believe what he’s hearing since he was examining Clemente scarcely yesterday and Clemente was just fine. He rushes over to be at Mariangela’s side. As for Mariangela, the first person she calls to tell about her dad is Gabe. He, Regina, Dolores and JC are upstairs at Pau’s bedside. He tells Regina why he must rush out and asks her to make sure Pau does not find out about Clemente just yet because it would upset her and possibly hurt her chances to bring the baby to term.

Miriam has Pedro come to her office and she slaps him first thing. She accuses him of being the thief who took jewels from her bedroom safe and replaced them with fakes. He tells her he does not know about any of this so she calls him a coward for not admitting his guilt. She slaps him again as he tries to tell her it was Rogelio, not him, who is the thief. Miriam yells back that Rogelio has nothing to do with any of this, but he is now angry as hell himself and tries to leave. (He is too much of a gentleman to slap back.) She grabs him and says he is not going anywhere till he gives her back what belongs to her. He replies that he cannot give her back what he does not have. She threatens him with jail and he yells back at her telling her (like the mouse that finally roared) to go ahead but his conscience is clear, and that he is fed up with living in this house full of wild she-beasts and is leaving. Then he turns around and slams the door shut behind him. Miriam figures that he really must not have had anything to do with the fakes after all.

Mariangela sadly stares over at her father’s dead body still slouched on her couch. Leo comes in to see if he can offer a bit of sympathy and a shoulder to cry on. He tells her they have to do an autopsy as the law demands, but that it will determine for her exactly what caused his death. He tries consoling her by telling her that we have to realize that some things, as painful as they might be, just have to be accepted in life.

Jos pays her long overdue visit to abandoned Freddy who, by now, has had a jailhouse epiphany, and realizes that she had planned to have him take the fall for the murder from the very beginning. He is not a happy camper when she comes in. He yells through the bars at her, “How come you haven’t come to see me before now?” “I have been so busy. I simply cannot thank you enough--” Jos begins. He stops her, “You’re lying! I realized you had it planned from the beginning the moment I saw the look on your face at the trial after I made my final declaration!” She coldly admits all of it then. “Yes, you were such a fool to take the blame yourself and so I used you. “ “But I am your father, and I did this for you!” answers the incredulous Freddy. “You don’t matter at all. You don’t mean a thing to me!” is Jos’ oh-so-cold reply. She tries to back away but Freddy manages to grab her through the bars and begins choking her.

Jos, however, manages to bite his hand and he has to let loose of her then. He renounces being her father or having ever helped her, and he tells her he never wants to see her again. “Too late! The judge already sentenced you (nanny-nanny-boo-boo!) and you are going to spend a lot of years in jail paying for Edgar’s murder. I only came to find out if you finished changing Clemente’s will so mom and I will end up with all of his fortune. Well, from the look on your face you apparently did.” Infuriated, he throws himself at the bars in a vain attempt to grab her again, but she backs away just in time and gives him a finger blow-kiss from her lips. “Bye-bye, Dad!” As she turns to walk away she looks over her shoulder, smiles and adds,” May you rot in jail!” Freddy starts screaming through the bars, “You will pay for this, I swear! –Jailer! I need to talk to someone!!”

Gabe is driving over to Mariangela’s in the Beemer (I guess he left the Jag with Jos), when he gets a call from Freddy who is frog hopping mad. Freddy tells Gabe he must speak to him as soon as possible because he has something very important to tell him. (Out with it already, Freddy!) Gabe tells him he can’t take the time right then because there has been a tragedy. Freddy asks what happened and Gabe tells him that Clemente is dead. Freddy is impactado. “He can’t be! He can’t be!”
Jos gets back home and tells Miriam about the incident at the jail. Miriam tells Jos about the jewels being forgeries and Jos feels it could not be Pedro. He would be too scared to try it. She wonders if it was Clemente instead, since he knew the combination to Miriam’s safe. Miriam agrees it was probably him and says she is glad then that the damned jerk is dead.

Gabe arrives at Mariangela’s just a bit after Leo, and she runs into his arms totally forgetting poor Leo is even there. Leo slumps, mumbles his good-byes, and shuffles out the door unnoticed. (The guy just cannot buy a break, can he? --Leo, forget her. She has half a screw loose anyway, falling in love with a guy old enough to be her father and then some. And, no, hair dye at that age doesn’t change the fact, either.)

Miriam cautions her daughter that they will have to pretend to be extremely pained over Clemente’s death. Jos tells Miriam she is tired of pretending about Clemente. Miriam says they will have to for a while longer. As they get ready to walk out the door to change into their mourning clothes, Jos cheers her mom up by reminding her that after this they will never have another financial worry in the world. With Clemente’s fortune, they are now fabulously wealthy. “You’re absolutely right, daughter!” As they open the door to walk out, Miriam immediately begins wailing over her dearly departed husband. (Helena Rojo’s dead-pan timing is impeccable again. --Thank God there is some true comic relief about now.)

The very dignified funeral for Clemente has started. Everybody from Saroya and Diana to Candy and Cortito are there. The priest is praying over the coffin when Jos, Miriam and Karen make their dramatic entrance right next to it, and Jos begins wailing at the top of her voice over her dead “Papito!” Gabe is upset to see her act this way, as is everybody else it appears. Jos looks over to the grieving Mariangela and accuses her at the top of her lungs of killing her father. “Are you happy now? You killed him! You did not know how to care for him! You damned bitch!” Mariangela screams back, “I am not the cause of my father’s death! He had love and care here!” Karen takes her turn and lashes out at Mariangela. She tells her that her grandfather’s death will forever be on Mariangela’s conscience. Miriam starts yelling then that if she "would have only let us bring him back home this would never have happened.” Candy has had enough and she starts screaming back at them to defend Mariangela’s care of her ailing father. “I witnessed myself how you behaved toward him! Mariangela cared for him and was the best daughter ever!” Miriam yells back at her to explain then how and why he died. Candy rushes over to try to hit her. Bedlam ensues and Jos and Miriam are ready to oblige Candy when Gabe comes into the middle of the fray and holds Jos off. The others hold back Candy just in time. Then Leo jumps up and yells over the ruckus to inform the whole crowd of mourners, “Though this is not the time or place, the autopsy report states he died of drinking impure alcohol.”

Jos and Miriam act shocked and immediately accuse Mariangela of giving her father the tainted alcohol even though she knew he was an alcoholic. Mariangela says he only drank while he lived with the two of them because he had felt so alone. With her, there was never the need for him to drink. Miriam screetches back to Mariangela, “Then explain the results of the autopsy!” Gabe finally has had enough (haven’t we all about now) and tells Jos her father’s body is being laid to rest here and deserves respect. If they cannot control themselves, they need to just leave and now. (Thank you, Gabe! It took you long enough!) Jos won’t leave the spotlight, but at least her wailing at 150 decibels finally ends and she continues to “sob", bent over Clemente’s coffin. She has made her entrance and her point.

Saroya whispers to Diana that Jos lacks good judgment. (That is an understatement.) Rogelio steps over to Diana just then and asks her what game she is playing. Diana tells him she isn’t talking to him right now. He warns her to be careful, but she tells him he better cut out the threats unless he wants his daddy to find out how he earns his living now. “Just the look on Gabe’s face when he finds out you’re the owner of a strip joint! Now get lost because we do not want to see you or to have you near us. (Slam! Bam! Pow! What a classy putdown. Diana 2, Rogelio zip.)

Leo returns home after the funeral and tells Silvestre that it is over between him and Mariangela. She is free to be happy with whomever. That whomever (Gabe) is comforting Mariangela by her father’s coffin. He tells her how happy Clemente was living with her and that she gave him the peace that he could never find living all those years with Miriam and Joselyn. --For their part, Jos goes up to change her clothes. She is going out to party. Miriam gets agitated and says she should not be seen out and about like that with her father just laid to rest. What will people say? Jos replies that with all that money of Clemente’s in her hands, they can think whatever they want. (PAR-T-Y DOWN!!)

Mariangela comes to visit her parents’ graves the next day to put flowers on them. Cecilia, who was Aurora’s nurse at the hospice, appears. She says she cannot talk then, but she gives Mariangela the address where she can come find her so they can chat.

Karen comes to see Pau and "accidentally-on-purpose" lets it slip that Clemente has died and was buried. She upsets her with this news and JC enters the room. She excuses herself and says she is so sorry, but she thought Paulina knew about Clemente. JC asks her to leave.

Miriam, Jos, and Gabe are in the library waiting for the lawyer to read Clemente’s will. Miriam is impatient for the proceedings to begin. Gabe says they have to wait for Nicolas. Suddenly, Nic appears and in comes Mariangela with him. He tells the lawyer that Clemente’s final will and testiment gave half of all his wealth and possessions to Joselyn and Mariangela equally. Miriam has to have clarification from Gabe, because nothing went to her, only to the two girls. The notary declares their prior will then to be invalid. Miriam is fuming and she threatens to fight for what is hers by right. “Notario, can’t you do something to stop this hit and run job?” Jos plays the victim for having to share. “First you took my father. Now you are taking what belongs to us. Have some pity and leave us in peace.” Mariangela tells her to stuff it ‘cause she isn’t buying the act. Jos can think what she wants, but she could care less. Jos leaves and afterward Mariangela tells Nic and Gabe that she is willing to give up her share of the inheritance just to be left alone because she doesn’t want trouble. Gabe and Nic both tell her to think about it long and hard because she now has just as many rights as Jos, including the fact she now owns half of the mansion they are standing in. (I know I wouldn’t have to think twice.......)

Miriam complains to Jos that their hands are tied for now, but after thinking it through with a cooler head, she feels it is better for them to leave things as they are. She explains to Jos that if Nic starts an investigation he might discover that she forged Clemente’s signature and that would be worse for them. So, she says they will have to find another way to take Mariangela’s portion away from her.

In Candy’s kitchen, Mariangela tells Candy that she does not want the inheritance and she doesn’t want to live in the mansion although it is her right to do so now. It is too full of bitter memories. Then she tells Candy about her running into Cecilia, her mother’s nurse. She tells her the nurse suspects her mother was murdered. Mariangela plans to let Leo know soon and to go over to get the details from the nurse at her place.

Gabe tells JC and Paulina that he will be moving into the mansion to watch out for her while she is ill. Later he tells Jos, who surprises him when she responds in a very mature and composed manner. Jos tells him he does not have to remind her that they are no longer married or related in any way. She only wants to deal with him on a courteous and genial level for Little Lui’s sake.

Rogelio complains to Tiberio about Paulina’s situation at the mansion now. “It might as well be a hospital!” Everybody is going to be staying there again, even Dolores. What really irks him is that Otilia and Diana now know that they own the stripclub. Ti advises Rogelio that if it means kissing Diana’s feet to insure they don’t lose their business, Rogelio will have to do it.

Dolores meets up with Jos in the main hall of the manse as she is taking a tray up to Paulina. She is surprised to see Dolores there. Dolores tells her she will be looking after Paulina. She adds that she had better get used to seeing her there because she is going to be around a good long while. Jos tries for a truce and says if Dolores minds her own business, Jos will tend to her own. Dolores tells Jos to keep her distance because as far as she is concerned Jos is the one who murdered her brother. Jos glares at her then.

Leo goes with Mariangela to speak with Cecelia. She tells them that in Aurora’s autopsy they found she had been given major doses of tranquilizer. She had been afraid to come forward because she was afraid as her nurse that they would accuse her. She believes the person who gave her the deadly dose of medicines was caught on their security tapes. The woman was tall and thin, but unfortunately they didn’t get a good look at her because she kept her head down and had her hair up. It was definitely, though somebody she had never seen around there before; it was this strange woman who was seen on the security camera tapes going into Aurora’s room.

That funeral was awesome to watch! Luckily, in novela-land, it does not occur to the priest or anyone else to throw the troublemakers out before it spirals out of control...

Good one! What a family.
