Introducing myself
Hi! I've been recapping Heridas de Amor on my blog, Trying to Translate. Now Melinama has asked me to do recaps here for Duelo de Pasiones on Thursdays, so I'm going to give it a shot. I freely admit that my Spanish isn't very good, so if I make mistakes (and I will) please point them out! That's why I'm watching telenovelas: to learn.
So far I've only seen three telenovelas start-to-finish: Piel de Otoño (my favorite), Peregrina, and Heridas de Amor. I also watched the last few weeks of Apuesto por un Amor and Inocente de Ti, and I'm currently watching La Fea Más Bella a few days a week.
Thanks to telenovelas, I've learned how to say all kinds of really useful things in Spanish, like "I am pregnant" and "I want a divorce" and "Who killed Anibal?" So if I ever visit Mexico, I'm all set!

Staffordshire is fine English china. I assumed Omar was referring to Fer's fragile and breakable state. And I agree that we should just enjoy the nonsense and know that Fer and Lety will absolutely end up together.

Ha, I love your new Spanish phrases! My first two zingers (from Alborada) were "Thank God I am the whore of only one man" and "I am pregnant with the heir of your cousin." I've gotten a lot of mileage out of those two. Welcome aboard Carmel!!

Welcome Carmel. Sounds like you'll fit in really well! Those were my primer phrases too. Actually came in handy for me when I traveled. One of our party had recently become a divorciada and spoke of the situation often, and one of our friend's relatives we met was embarazada, and spoke of that situation [no cousin heirs or unknown Daddies but that's ok], so you see, you never know!! :) Again welcome!!

I started off with La Ursurpadora, where I learned the difference between ser and conocer. During Alborada, I learned how to say S.O.B. in spanish.

Thanks, guys! (I've just realized that I should have said Apuesta por un Amor, not Apuesto -- oops.)
Oddly, to me the most common phrase in telenovelas seems to be "Que haces aquí" (What are you doing here?) Maybe it's just me, but that seems to come up at least once every episode. If I ever do go to Mexico, I'm sure that's the first thing they'll ask me!

Carmel, I'm looking forward to your recaps of Duelo. Learning new phrases is half the fun of the novelas!

LOL---Carmel--I can tell that you will fit right in here. We are a pretty randy and irreverant lot. I still understand very little Spanish, but I have picked up a few phrases, such as : ''PERO QUE...PERO QUE!!!''[Luis in a particularly bad mood to Hipolita ...who, by the way, was in an equally bad mood.]...and from '' Amor Real'' the phrase which means ''I swear'' which threw me way off because it sounds like an ''h'' but is spelled with a ''j'' [jurar].When I can't spell new words that I hear, I write them phonetically and repeat them over and over to my Latino students...one guy , Oscar, is very good at figuring out what was ACTUALLY said, but most of them just stare at me , impactado. Sylvia--I liked the phrases you first picked up , too.~~~Susanlynn, still bilingual after all these years

Hi, Carmel, this is a great place for recaps! I especially love the handy words I have learned such as-- sinverguenza, cannala, mosca muerta, and golfa, to name a few. My mom got me hooked on novelas about 15 years ago and I love them. Guess it's because they actually end, unlike the english ones. Becky T.

Now that I'm watching Alborada again (about 1 hr. per week, it's excruciating) I'm sure I'll pick up lots more choice tidbits!
