La Fea Más Bella #183 1/8/07 Lety rides the calandria and Fern drinks, drinks, drinks.

  • Yet again, Carolina gives Lety the day off, because she has to make personal calls. Tonight: the beauty queens will dress in regional costumes. "Lety, do you know where Aldo is?" "He has a meeting with Humberto." Carolina points out this Freudian slip: that's Fern's father's name, not Aldo's...
  • Fern badgers Alicia, who has said there are phone messages for the president of Conceptos, but none for him. He's very sarcastic. He points out that, by contract, he must work at Conceptos for six more months, and then he'll get back what's his, and the first thing he's going to do is fire "someone." "I'll give you hints so you can guess. Somebody without a moustache. Somebody without glasses. Somebody with dyed hair." Alicia is guessing all the other female employees, he says no no no. "A gossip with an empty head. An oxigenada who says she's studied 6 semesters someplace!" As usual, her affect is nil. Alicia may be voluptuous physically, but she's emotionally flatline. Her retort: "I wish you luck getting "yours" back, but it's going to be very hard, because the business has disappeared. And remember when I got here, you told me not to mess in your affairs, and now you want me to work." "I'm expecting a call from Lety, and from somebody you know very well: TOMAS MORA, you crafty little thing you, you tried to get his money..." He's quite nutty in this scene.

Fern asks if the others have heard from Lety, no they haven't, Simon ostentatiously speaks English to "Don Ferrrni." Fern asks Simon to come into his office.

Simon asks how Fern's doing and goes into an operatic effusion of support. Fern says "I hate this song! Please just go to my bar and get my car. Just go, I don't want to shout." They do a little "go-get-my car" dance.
  • Teresita tells Marcia: "We two have to take care of business. Fern is useless, who knows what planet Omar is on, Humberto spends 24 hours a day dealing with the creditors, Ariel is with the lawyers trying to find a solution to the Lety problem." Marcia says she's working hard and Conceptos is getting good inquiries, but Teresita is very worried.
  • Omar greets Fern with approval: "How nice to see you here on time, recently bathed, perfumed, in a clean shirt, true you have no tie, but - to be president, first you have to look like a president. Any news of Lety?" "No, I'm sitting here waiting for a call which might never come, and you're nattering on about my tie, it's stupid and superficial." Omar says "Queen Teresita" specially asked him to keep an eye on Fern, to rescue him from his life of drunkenness and remove Lety from his heart.

"How will you do that?" "On the computer there's a list of wonderful women [sketches curves in air] who'd die for a chance to go out with a couple guys like us (especially me), with divine legs, lips as sensuous as your own ..." "You think that will make me forget? And are you suggesting Lety is not a woman?" There is a review of Omar's ugly nicknames for Lety, and Fern says Omar is a poor emissary because he has misunderstood his mission - he's actually supposed to be getting Fern back into Marcia's arms, but nobody is going to get Lety out of his heart. "Anyway, I'm desperate, because mother suggested Lety might be going out with somebody new." Omar laughs, "Your mother is hallucinating. That's absurd! Lety will never get another miracle... that's an advantage of your falling for a fea." Omar derides Fern for thinking a fairy-tale prince, handsome, faithful, with a horse, will ride up and take Lety away, will share his dreams with her, etc etc, in order to make her his woman -
  • Omar's sarcastic comments are in fact intercut with shots of Aldo being exactly that kind of prince: he shows up with a calandria (horse-drawn carriage) festooned with balloons and takes Lety off to see a barely-begun building on the beach - "my broken dream" - it was to have been the first of his chain of restaurants, "The Taste of Life." He shows her where the traditional fireplace would have been, the kitchen... She doesn't like that he's using the past tense, as if it were all a dream. Did he give it up because of what happened with his spouse? Is he showing her this now because the upcoming meeting with his father is bringing up old memories? He kisses her hand ardently, she looks upset. He says, "Maybe I can resolve things with my dad, but with Leonora I can't, she's dead." He gets upset and hustles her back in the wagon.
  • Fern tries to throw Omar out, saying he needs to be alone. Omar's parting words: "When are you going to realize she doesn't want to talk to you? She just wants to destroy us." Fern says she's a good person and he believes in her blindly. Talk to her mother, Omar advises. Fern again tries to throw him out, saying, "We're not married, you're not my guard dog."
  • Julieta puts a nice chile in front of Tomas. Erasmo complains about this "digestive tube in human form who is here three meals a day, he'll leave us in ruin." The phone rings: it's Fern calling Julieta! "Lety hasn't called me, has she called you or Tomas?" "Yes, she talked to Tomas, do you want to talk to him?" "NO NO NO - but she needs to know, the business has such bad problems, she has to talk to me." "Tomas says she doesn't want to." "Beg her to give me another chance."

She passes the phone along and Tomas tells Fern: Lety now owns the whole shooting gallery. Fern goes wild, blames it all on Tomas (because he believes Lety and her parents are honorable people), and after hanging up starts drinking straight from the whiskey bottle. He forces Omar to do the same. I must say, as the daughter of an alcoholic, that I do not find Fern's drinking funny at all. It's bothering me quite a bit. Omar proposes that, rather than he and Fern conning Lety, perhaps she had been conning the both of them from the very beginning! Fern remembers Psychic Guy saying, "Lety is happy."

Omar and Fern take it into the hallway - Omar complains: "You feel betrayed, you're a victim, you have the face of a wet dog, begging for compassion." Teresita and Marcia are in the background as he continues. "I lost money too, Fern." Fern mocks him - Omar only owned one percent - and says again, he'll get it all back. Escaping, Fern says, "I'm going to church to get an exorcism."
  • In Acapulco Renata, one of the beauty girls, wants to drop out of the contest because her parents can't be there. Carolina sends Lety to talk to her. The girl bluffs at first but then admits that her parents decided to go on a vacation to Alaska rather than come see her. "I'm not important to them, so what difference does it make if I'm pretty?"
  • Julieta peeks in Lety's diary. She pretends to be dusting when Erasmo startles her from the doorway, saying he's going out to answer some help-wanted ads and hopefully find work. He leaves, and she opens the book, asking pardon of God and Lety. "I have to know."

She begins to read: "Nobody gives me a chance to show how much I can love - the driving force of my life and sentiments must be my work. It's the only thing that will save me: to be the shadow and the breath (or encouragement) of Don Fernando..."

Thanks, Melinama, and wow! The speed of light....¡que bueno!!!

I am getting annoyed with Fern's drinking, too. It is definitely not enhancing the plot. One brief scene was enough.

Simon's English was amusing, but the funny thing was his attempt to say "Excuse me" and messing it completely up. I listened at least twice to figure out what the heck he was doing. Then it was hilarious.

I had a mini culture shock when I realized Omar was talking about curvy girls who were 90-60-90, which must be cm and the equivalent of our 36-24-36. I had forgotten there might be a measurement difference....

Finally, Julieta is looking at the diary. Of course, as several have noted, it has only been three days. She suffered a long time knowing about Fern's betrayal, so Julieta is going to see a lot of info there. Yikes.

I couldn't help but wonder if Luigi's pink hat would be better on Caro. Maybe they'll give it to her later.....

Thanks again, Melinama!

One more thing (as always)....yes, that was a nifty scene with the horse-drawn carriage alternated with Omar talking about a scene like that which was simply imposible for Lety, since she's such a fea. Hear, hear, writers!

Do I sound disjointed? That's how LFMB is hitting me at the moment. Still love it. Aldo is looking better by the minute.

Thanks, Melinama. Great recap. Also, a huge thanks to all you other recappers. I can't imagine having to do this project that takes hours every week. It would be like having a term paper due every week. Many thanks!!!

The psychic guy did say something about Fernando trying to destroy himself. By diving into the bottle that could be one way and, no, it's not funny at all. I don't think it was meant to be funny this time.

Finally, the diary is being read by Julietta. I wish I could move in next door to her and have all those wonderful meals. Julietta is the perfect Mom image.

Poor Robopop. Having read about the age discrimination in hiring in Mexico, his chances for a job are slim to none.

A note to all the other Fernando Fernatics; we need Aldo to be interested in Lety to show other people back at Conceptos that another man could find her appealing. Remember, even Fernando was talking to PG about the beautiful women he has been used to being around before Lety. This will open his eyes, too. Not to mention the boost of self-esteem for Lety herself. I'm liking Aldo more and more, but my heart will always be Fernando's.

Like another here, I see nothing amusing about being liquored up in the office or getting under the wheel of a car(drinking),as Fern is doing..I love his character--but it denotes much weakness on his part of not dealing with issues unless alcohol is involved. I know personally what alcohol does to marriage and life in general when abused.I was married to it for 18 years..Not funny.

I don't know what it's going to take in the character of Omar to come down from his high horse.A big part of this tedious long drawn out ending is to see payback to certain characters who have verbally assaulted our Lety..I feel in the near future our Lety will have a re-awakening and in a professional manner or not, take care of "those" we love to hate here on LFMB.She may forgive them, but first stop beating down Fern and forgive him..Mo

I can't help feeling sorry for Fern surropunded as he is by clueless self involved people who just can't except or understand his suffering. And, they certainly aren't doing anything to help him just standing around commenting on his drinking and not doing a thing about it. It does look like the PG might be right about him destroying himself. I was glad to see Julieta start to read the diary but I thought if she really wanted to know what happened she might have been better off going to the most recent entries. It looks like Fern goes to Acapulco tonight so I'm curious as to what made him go. Did Julieta tell him or the Gang that he might find Lety there or is it going to be just a case of blind luck?.

Thanks Melinama for voicing what so many of us must be thinking....that Fern's drinking makes him more a candidate for a 12-step group than the answer to Lety's dreams.
If this were real life rather than a telenovela, I'd advise her to find someone else...but yes, I really want the two of them to get together in the end....without alcohol! Judy

The alcohol bothers me as well especially because he is using it as a crutch. That bottle he was swigging out of looked like REALLY cheap tequila plus he had the ever present flask. I also noticed lately that Lety, who acted like a drunken fool on the plane to Germany with just a shot of whatever she drank also seems to be slugging back big glasses of wine since she fell under the influence of Dr. Phil.

Maybe Fern just decided to take a ride to the ocean to clear his mind, after all he's been drinking all day in the office and getting no repect from the co-workers. Mexico City is not on the water,so maybe he needs the salt air. Did anyone notice last night in the preview for tonight's show the boat,as Fernando drives onto the beach with bottle in hand? None other than the boat seen with LFMB number one therapist,Aldo.

Finally, finally, Julieta is going to read the diary--so much a part of this storyline..Who's next.Fernando? Maureen

On another subject, I was just thinking about the death of the director of LFMB and the announcement that it will end in a few weeks in Mexico. Maybe his death sped up the finale. The seven day a week extended schedule for LFMB may have contributed to his heart attack. People shouldn't be driven like that.

On another note, it is nice to see Lety in normal clothing and showing a little skin. Robopop would have a fit. We hardly even notice since we're so used to normal people dressing this way but what an improvement.

There's a tribute to the director on Youtube.com by some of the actors, writers, etc.of LFMB. He was so cute..Mo

It is indeed nice to see Lety's wardrobe changing to clothing that looks more typical and appropriate for the situation and climate. She was wearing some lovely open-toed sandals with medium high heels when she swung her feet in the carriage last night. That really tickled me.

I expect the rigor of production they used could have quickened the director's death. It is most likely that he had an underlying heart problem, too. (My husband has congestive heart failure and wears out very quickly. When he pushes himself he suffers. He's really stabilized it, but he has learned how to eat, exercise and take care of his need for rest. He's retired and it helps a lot at 70 years old to slow down just a little. He hasn't given up everything, just the very long, intense days. For years we had no idea he had CHF then it was diagnosed when he was about 61. They gave him less than two years to live but he really got on top of it). I hope the cast and crew are finding ways to relieve their stresses over losing their colleague in addition to production stresses.

Angelica Maria's last name is Hartman?
Permalink posted by I : 9:48 PM

La fea was a BIG hit so the producers have made the novella last longer... the only problem is that THAT had bord so of the vewers....

Yes, that's correct. Angelica Maria's (Julieta) surname is Hartman. It's unclear, but some have her born as María de los Ángeles Ortíz Hartman(in American conventional order) and others have her listed Angelica Maria Hartman Ortiz (in Mexican order). Her official biography seems to say that she was baptized as the latter, because there was no saint for only the name Angelica (and if you are Catholic, you know traditionally your children must carry a form of the name of a saint). Her biography says nothing about the Maria de los Angeles part, but she's listed as an author with that name at the SF Library and cross referenced with the name Angelica Maria so, go figure. It would make sense to me, though, that they legally named her Maria on the civil birth certificate in New Orleans, but started calling her Angelica, so baptized her as both in order to get that saint in there. Maybe she was baptized in Mexico, so they didn't care what the US certificate said. Anyway interesting research subject if anyone feels so inclined to look up her actual birth record in Louisiana!!

Kris, I wondered if she was born in NOLA, the record registries might still have problems because of the hurricane. The aftereffects have been long-standing for many kinds of services, and if records were stored in NO and not in Baton Rouge, there might be no evidence. Just a sidebar thought. (My brother in law lives in BR, and they lost all their bank records for a while since the servers were in NO).

Jeanne

Yeah, I entertained that thought as well, but as far as I heard there is no loss of the historical records, just maybe a delay for the processing, depending on the parrish, so should still be available! If those records were damged or destroyed, I'm sure it would have been a huge component of the media events...

The 2011 discussion for Capitulos 183 & 184 is at this link.

First let me say 'thanks' for the lovely recap. i too am a daughter of an alcoholic father and the drinking on Fernando's part was getting to be too much today. That scene in the bar just dragged on and on.
On a positive note, I'm glad that the diary is finally found and being read!
Also that Lety is looking more relaxed, and looked lovely in the native dress. Aldo's positive affirmations and philosophy of life is rubbing off on lety--as she is helping others with their confidence. One of the best ways to help yourself, is to help someone else.

I get a kick out of Omar's ties--diagonal stripes with a striped shirt--not really a good look.
Maybe Luigi could give him some tips.
Aldo coming out of the surf, as Nando is stopped on the beach 9in his car) was a bit much. LOL
