La Fea Más Bella #234 3/19/07 in which the cuartel goosesteps and Lety reflects on the virtues of her finance company.

Aldo's new book is out. "I can't ask more from life!" (But as we know, he does.) Lety dodges his most ardent embraces, there in the kitchen with the poofy hats on.

The cuartel wonders if Lety will invite them to the Expo - it begins tomorrow. "We've been so supportive she has to invite us!" "Have you forgotten what jerks you were about the Aldo gossip?" asks Irma.

Lety drives up; when the creepy cuartel asks why she's alone, she says Tomas has gone to get his new car and Aldo has to go to the publishers, then says "tomorrow is very important here at Conceptos." "We've worked so hard for you - but we'd work harder if you'd invite us to the Expo." "Of course I invite you." "Fern's coming back today, y'know."

Aldo and Julieta are still in the kitchen. She confides: "My husband's not an easy guy to get along with, he doesn't warm to folks, he criticizes the whole world, he hates all Lety's male friends but Tomas - he's jealous. But he fell for you right away." She hints at the tough stuff they've been through and says Erasmo invited Fern into their home "because he was Lety's boss," but then the bad stuff happened.

Erasmo shows up, Aldo teaches him to say "chefs" instead of "cocineros" and suggests he stay and help Julieta cook since he (Aldo) has to leave. Erasmo says he doesn't cook or do kitchenly things and instead asks to drive Aldo to the publishers.

Tomas drives up to Conceptos in "Cornhair's" car. Lety: "Where did you get this? You can't have been enough of an idiot to get the Airhead's car back for her?" "Well, I did, but not for her - there were problems so I got it at a good price."

Meanwhile, Oxy is on the meeecroboooss. While the cuartel is musing on the sidewalk ("First the cellphone, now the car, with Tomas she's won the lottery!") Alicia spots her car and barks at the microbus drive to let her off. She sobs and breathes all over it, stroking it, crooning to it. Celso says maybe it isn't hers, the glove compartment is different. She ignores that. "My precious little car, but why is it here?" "It's Mora's." "Oh, no, it's mine, I recognize the smell..." They tell her again that it now belongs to Tomas and she frowns, commercial impactada.

After the commercial, Omar is sleeping/drooling on Luigi's shoulder while Luigi finishes the commercials. (Babearse = dribble, drool, slobber on yourself.) Alicia is still discussing the car with the cuartel (sigh). "What happened to Marcia's car?" "None of your business." "She (Alicia) probably hocked it to pay her debts." "No, I didn't, because I don't have debts. It's safe." "She doesn't have money to buy gas." "No, I just like to experiment with new things. I took the microbus to see how ugly poor people like yourselves get around."

They say it's not that she doesn't understand that the car is Mora's, she just doesn't WANT to understand.

Alicia goes into the office and marvels at the new colors of the secretaries' area (sigh). "These are divine colors, and Divine Justice has brought my car back."

Tomas, in his office, talks to his photo of Alicia, asking "would you like to go out for a spin?" - she barges in and he hurriedly turns it so the Einstein side is facing outwards. I think we're supposed to notice his haircut resembles Einstein's.

Alicia: "I died of pleasure to see my car back, not even a scratch on it, how'd you do it?" "The lawyers hadn't been able to sell it and wanted to close the case so they accepted my offer."

Alicia assumes he did it for her and says, "oh, I'll give you a little something for it each month, you'll be very flexible of course because we're such good friends." His cellphone is plunged deeply into her cleavage - only its antenna is showing. "I never stopped appreciating you."

"You don't have to pay me anything!" "I can't take it without something in return, I'll give you a token payment, not right now of course because I have bills to pay..." He repeats she doesn't have to pay anything. "Ay, Tomy!" She grabs his head and thrusts it down into her bosom, the cellphone antenna is probably sticking into his ear. "You're GIVING it to me?" "No, I can't." "Why?" "Because I bought it for myself."

She drops him on the floor. "First you promised me money for the car and took advantage of my innocence. Then you gave me that check with the bad signature. You've ruined my life and taken what's most precious - my car! No, Mora, it's MINE. I paid for it with the sweat of my - well, with the sweat of my ex-husband's brow." "Well, I could take you for a spin." "No way, you're not even getting me to the street corner." She slaps him.

The phone rings, it's her dad. She says, "This is going to be a long phone call, hope you have time - remember that cockroach who deceived me? He's swindled me again. (Estafar = swindle.)

In one of this show's ever more vapid and hopeless attempts to make the cuartel amusing, they goosestep into the office. They admire the redecorating (sigh). They find out from Alicia that Marcia will be back in time for the Expo.

In Tomy's office Lety asks acerbically why he brought so much trouble on himself by buying Alicia's car. Eventually he abandons the "it's a good investment" line and admits he just wanted his chica's attention. "I thought I'd share it with her, but she didn't like the idea." "You won't get anywhere with her unless you flat out give her the car, and that would be the biggest mistake of your life."

(Sobar: handle, suck up to.)

Annoyed, he parries - "You're nervous because Fern's coming back today." Annoyed, she parries: "Maybe I'm nervous looking at your hair which is the same color (orange) as the walls."

Tomas calls Fern "Mandiola" (bossy) again and taunts Lety for not being over him. "Tomas, the difference between you and me is that I learned my lesson, but you're still hung up on a lost cause." She marches out as Tomas says: "Don't march!"

In the publisher's office, Aldo is handed the first copy of his book, hot off the presses. Erasmo is impressed and reads the introduction out loud and yadda yadda about food and sacred familial sharing blah blah blah.

Simon brings Tomas the Conceptos water bill. Tomas says it's pretty cheap and delivers a little PSA about public water systems.

Lety queries her diary: "Will Don Fernando come back ready to show how much he loves me, the way he promised before he left?"

Fern arrives. He's nervous and asks if Marcia is back. Alicia says "she wanted to be back, but no airplane wanted to take her." "Those pilots, how temperamental they are" he jokes. There is forced laughter. "I'm waiting for a VERY important call" he squeaks like Luigi, and again forced laughter. "My joke wasn't that funny. But really, I'm expecting a very important visitor." [Oh dear, I suppose this is going to be the NYC chica -- ed.]

He leaves and the cuartel gossips: "Did you notice, he didn't ask about Lety?"

Lety, in her office, asks PM for the guest lists and when she hears Fern is back, asks hopefully: "Did he ask after me?" "No, he didn't ask about Marcia either." "No little message?" "No."

Simon dances in with the day's mail, expecting applause. "I have the usual tragic notices from the bank for [Alicia]." He sidles up to PM but then rebuffs her. "We're still mad at each other?" she asks. "Yes." "OK, then starting today I declare myself completely at liberty. There will be a lot of real sexy guys at the Expo."

Alicia grumps that people of PM's low level won't be invited to the Expo so of course we have to hear how Lety invited them all.

Simon says he doesn't care, and after he leaves, PM cries. He then gives Lety the statement from the credit company which is financing her car; she holds it up to the camera and says they have the best rates in town. Simon is oh so interested because he might want to buy a car some day. The camera lingers on the letterhead of this mortgage company. [I fear this is the future of TV. - Ed.]

Erasmo asks Aldo, "Is it hard to write a book? Because I have a great story to tell, it would be a bestseller, it's about my Uncle Lazaro Solis."

Simon gives Tomas his cellphone statement. He opens it - the size of the bill makes his hair stand up on end (that's a little joke). He is dizzy and staggering as he shrieks, "That woman never stops talking!" Simon says he'd have thought a Vice-President of Finance of Tomas's caliber would never have lent his phone to somebody like that. "I have to get it back! oh, but then she won't have the phone or the car... I know! she promised to give it back when I paid her salary, so I'll pay her."

Fern and Omar embrace, then race towards the Seat of Power. Fern says, "With the redecorating this has to stop - we can't go leapfrogging over the desk and breaking things. We'll seat ourselves in a democratic, civilized manner." They play chinchupu for the honor of the Seat of Power and when Fern loses he mutters about the short straw.

They tell each other "I missed you." Omar: "You stopped calling me!" "I was busy, airplanes, meetings..." "And that bonbon you met in NYC?"

Fern tries to talk about the Expo, but Omar says "This is not your priority of yore. Aren't you going to ask me about your little gargoyle and Domensain?" Fern ignores the jab and continues trying to talk about work, but Omar persists. "Are you serious?" "Do I have my joking face on? "You've grown up?" "All I care about is that the campaign goes well and we pay our debts."

"You don't fool me, I know you better than you think, I changed your diapers when you were a baby..." "OK, Carvajal, it's true - I'm dying to know about Domensolin." "DomensaEEN. OK, welcome back." They rise and embrace and then Omar slips into the Seat of Power, citing the "you snooze you lose" rule.

"My intention, Carvajal, is to convince Lety I don't care any more. I'm doing pretty well, eh, a good actor?" "I don't want to worry you but all this time, Aldo and Lety have been together upstairs, downstairs, everywhere, enchanted with life."

The Golden Circle of Goodbye zeroes in on Fern's impactado look of dismay.

Is it just me or is Alicia getting on everyone's "last nerve"? We are seeing the results of her 'seis semestres en una universidad blah blah blah.'
Has anyone else noticed that the Monster Shell painting seems to have shrunk, and that Irmita emphasizes her dialogue with "dichos" (idioms)? Mkes her dialogue trite and boring. There are a few happenings which develop the plot here, but much of what happens is 'filler', so I wonder where in the filming a new director took the place of Sergio Jimenez ( is that the correct name?).

Why was la fea mas bella extended? When all that is added is fillers?? I watch El Mundo and I don't think there are fillers there. It is constantly tense?
Fern was supposed to prove his love to Lety when he returned so why is he pretending to ignor her? Instead of rushing to her arms and telling her that he will give up marcia and move out on his own, as one way to show his love? Instead he is antagonizing her more. Unless!! It isbecause he is upset that she was with aldol, even tho he was with carla at the same time? If this is the case, will he at least let her know why he is mad, instead of repeating the bad to worse communication between therm.

I think Fernando is going to follow Crazy (like a fox) Carla's advice and try to make Lety jealous. He's forgotten his first reaction to the plan, that it might not be a good idea to mess with Lety's head! I see lots of trouble ahead for all concerned. One small note on the car fiance issue...I believe when Lety bought her car she also inquired about low interest rates for employees of Conceptos. She then was going to set up a plan with the car sales people so that other Conceptos folks would have a chance to buy a car and that is what she and Simon were talking about.

As for the product placement, you are absolutely right. From what I read this is much more prevalent in the Latin market than English-speaking market. I just read that the new show "Dame Chocolate" (on Telemundo) is being sponsored by Clorox and Ikea and they will be having product placements throughout, for example people cleaning with Clorox. I hope they will not go as far as to have the people exclaiming over the virtues of the products!

BTW, I've been meaning to post something on this new show. I think that because LFMB was so successful, someone was casting about for a show with a similar plot. It is about an ugly poor Mexican girl who is a relative of a rich chocolate factory owner. She is left the secret formula, so the cute boy (and his mother) who run the company in Miami need her to keep their fortune, but they don't necessarily want her. Sound familiar?

Anyway, the actress wears a rubber nose (a la Cyrano) and Bugs Bunny teeth! Sound familiar too?

What's different here is that the Mexican family comes to the US to live a la the Beverly Hillbillies, literally. The Granny character wears a Granny Clampett wig. On one recent episode, the poor girls come to the mansion and are spooked by automatic lights and flood the bathroom with the bidet.

This show may get better, and I am watching it sporadically, but I don't know if I will stick with it.

i didn't see this episode, but even still, i cringed at melinama's description of the advertisement for moneylenders. i can't believe i enjoy a show with not only obvious product placement, but having actors do actual commercials in character. it's so cheesy and bizarre. anyway, thanks for the recap. lfmb was on for a minute while i was doing homework, and i saw the chinchampu bit, which was funny. however, if the company is in such financial dire straits that they need to do this big expo, why are they painting and redecorating the offices? did i miss something? anon above mentioned Sergio Jimenez, but my understanding was that he passed away right before Christmas, and i believe we are still in September or October, fea-time, right? well, welcome to fillerlandia, it's a loonnng journey to the end.
-christina

Nah rest easy you are in Nov...fea time...like about 3 months to go, & yes the advertising does get worse. The reason TeleNovelas get extended is ratings, if the ratings are high they can extend them and milk more advertising revenue, cd's, dvd's. So yeah they gotta feel it up with something. This leads to a lot of WTF? They are already re-running LFMB in Mexico at 5:00pm m-f. So if crap sells just keep churning it out.

oooopppss
I meant fill it up not feel it up...Freud would say my slip is showing

thanks for the recap. On the previous recap the lady said she was watching the mexican version of la fea am kinda wondering if we are missing anything.Alicia kinda looked nice when she had on the coat.

I was told we are 3 months behind la fea in mexico. That ended february 23, so we have to May 23. therefore right now it must be middle of December??

No it is no where near what was being shown in Mexico the middle of Dec. I was there, I would say at 2 to 3 weeks for that. so I guess it is like 3.5 months behind

Too bad Fernando is following Carla's advice to make Lety jealous. Brilliant on Carla's part to suggest that, though. As Fernando messes up yet another chance to reconquistar Lety, Carla will be there as the consolation prize, and happy about it.
Omar is smarter about women than Fer is...how sad.

I thought that it was so funny when Alicia thought that Tomas bought the car for her. What happened to Marcia's car that she borrowed? Why did she have to take the bus when she had Marcia's car?

Does anyone else wonder how they got the money for the big decorating project when they were on the brink of financial disaster.

And Lety marching with the cuartel like school girls was stupid.

Re product placement - during the summer when the American telenovela Fashion House was on they were ridiculous. One character would say "What's that lipgloss your wearing?" and the other gal would say it's Maybelline's new blah blah blah and at one time they were doing a Garnier Nutrisse shampoo shoot.

We have obviously hit the point where the new director took over but unfortunately no one filled him in on the time line. Fern and Marcia went on business trips for 20 days and come back FOUR months later if the flipping calendar pages were right.

Aldo finishes his book and gets it published? Sorry guys but as a writer I can tell you that the bare bones minimum time to get a book published is a year and with a big cookbook which requires photos it would be longer than that.

The redecorating obviously took place over night if the reactions of the annoying cuartel are anything to go by.

Simon is still P O'd at PM and i don't think he would last 4 months. Even three weeks amazes me.

The porno shell does seem smaller and also, mercifully, blends into the decor a little more.

Fern and Omar how I missed seeing them together and predictably Omar wants to talk about the babe while Fern is trying to ignore Lety (very bad move on his part). He was doing such a good job of it that for a minute I was really worried. In some ways i can't blame him after all he is under the impression that she slept with Aldo and he isn't going to risk showing her any vulnerability.

Summing it all up this was a total filler episode. Since we were 14 weeks behind Mexico we now have 54 days to go - and to think that this show was originally written as a 60 episode novela.

Anyone taking bets on the expo day lasting a week or more?

OMG I know that Lety and Tomas are good buddies but do they have to shop in the same store. Those matching jackets would have been bad on one of them and on both they were hideous. What happened to Lety's horse blanket coat that she was wearing outside? Oh and she is still wearing those dreadful white stockings. interestingly enough o read a fashion article the other day that said it is NEVER good to wear white stockings unless you are a nurse.

Jeeze you'd think that since Lety knew Fern was coming back she would have made some effort to look her best but no she makes herself worse than ever. I'm with CC what on earth does he see in her?

Did it strike anyone odd that Fern asked if marcia was coming back. You'd think he'd know since she relentless tracks him down. I'm hoping that once CC appears he will move out of Marcia's or that we see the biggest cat fight in history while the real threat sits on the side lines in an ugly heap.

Not for nothing but um I imagine that ALicia gets her bills at her job for comedic effect cuz I am not allowed to get personal mail at my job.

Fern & Omar playing chinchumpu was kinda cute.

The mini ads & the out of the blue PSA in this are very annoying, please no more.

Okay I went and checked the summeries on the ESMAS site...this episode ran like Nov 21- Nov 22, cause the stop and start points aren't the same as here.

P.S. When Fern seemed unintersted in Lety I too was worried but good thing he was only acting.

Last night, I rebelled against the show and decided not to watch, I feel cheated and I'm getting very upset because the novela is not taking it normal course, in stead we are watching everlasting not funny not smart conversations of the cartel or we are watching Alicia boobies... I mean, Aliboobie complaining about everything. For the looks of it, I did not miss much, I think for now on, I'll just read the blogg and if I notice that something good is going to happen then I'll watch. BTW anonymous 12:35 the redecoration project was already paid for, it was something that supposedly was already in the books by the time the big scandal broke. It seems that they forgot about it (with the change of president and all) and then when Alicia called the decorator to change “her” office, the decorator reminded them about it.

Maricruz

Anyway we count it this show should end June 1. Rather than count weeks days makes it seem that things will go faster. I'd like to think tonight might be more fun since there will be a Lety Fern scene and that she dog arrives at Conceptos but the constant use of the cuartel who have long ago lost any charm for me and hangdog Tomy and his mamsota have me grinding my teeth and wondering why I just don't tape it and fast forward. Alas I'm such an addict I can't risk missing something- anything that will advance Lety and Fern's love story.

Diane

Thanks for the vocabulary notes, Melinama. I've been dealing with a month-long sinus infection and just don't have the energy to look up words anymore (I know, how pathetic!!!) so I really appreciate your work.
In contrast to the first anonymous blog, I enjoy Irmita's "dichos" because it's another way of learning the language. I try to write them down if they don't go too fast. Judy B.

Within the whole range of annoying things about this filler episode, the one that struck me the hardest was the "instantaneous" publication of Aldo's cookbook. I know things are easier/quicker with computers, but still...Aldo only finished the manuscript the other day. What happened to the editing and layout process, not to mention the actual printing and binding. Not that reality makes a dent in that parallel universe we call telenovela land. I wouldn't mind it so much if Fern and Lety could get their acts together.

Sergio Jimenez passed away just after Christmas. We (US) have not reached that point in the novela yet. When we do, I'm sure there will be a memorial to him in the captions or something.
We are at Nov. airing in Mexico. The production traveled to NY to film in the beginning of Nov. and you see today was the first day the characters returned to Mexico. the shooting is of course a few weeks ahead of the airing, so there you have it.

Melinama, thanks for the delightful recap!! I chuckled through it, and believe me, it’s been a day (maybe even a week) when I needed those healing chuckles.

“Meeecroboooss” -- whoda thunk there would be southern drawls in Mexico?

“She grabs his head and thrusts it down into her bosom, the cellphone antenna is probably sticking into his ear.” -- ROTFL!

BTW, I just realized that Omar calls Lety names to Fer, and Tomás calls Fer names to Lety. I hadn’t noticed the parallels. At least Lety doesn’t come up with stalking schemes and force Tomás to implement them. He wouldn’t have time anyway because he’s busy with his own stalking.

“.But really, I'm expecting a very important visitor." “ [Oh dear, I suppose this is going to be the NYC chica -- ed.]” -- Melinama, I think we can almost count on it. ¡Caray!

“The camera lingers on the letterhead of this mortgage company. [I fear this is the future of TV. - Ed.]” -- On US television, they are only a tiny bit more subtle about product placement. And not always that much more subtle. (sigh)

“They rise and embrace and then Omar slips into the Seat of Power, citing the "you snooze you lose" rule” ROTFL!

Jeanne

I have come to dearly love Omar with his idiotic schemes but thee are times with is relentless calling Lety a gargolita that I wish Fern would pick up the nearest hard device and smack him with it. At least Fern continues to challenge him every time he does it. Last night when he did it again Fern quietly told him "Her Name is Lety" Every time Fern makes a bonehead move like going along with CC's plan and i want to kill him, his discussions with Omar always redeem him in my eyes.

I guess Oxi must be getting up earlier in the morning since the bus isn't as crowded anymore and i agree that the reason she isn't swanning around in Marcia's car is because she can't come up with the dinero for gas.

One small question - when Marcia was in London why was she in a hotel when Helmet Head and Don H have a house in London. Surely Mama T would want to know what was going on.

am sorry people i just started watching the novelas especially this one and i cant figure out who sergio jimenez is.....someone out there help

corncerned

sergio jimenez was th director. He died in Dec or Jan before finishing the show.

I thought the same thing about Aldo's book. Not remotely possible to take a first draft and make it into a complete printed piece in 1-2 weeks. Only in telenovela land......

As BORING as last night's episode was, the one thing we can be grateful for is that we were spared watching Erasmo tell some mind numbing story to Aldo about his uncle! Again, I had to feel sorry for Aldo..can you imagine having to deal with Erasmo and his "best selling stories"?? Believe me, for all of you who can't stand Aldo, I think he paid big time last night dealing with RoboPop! ;)

I guess I just didn't get the significance of the goose stepping.?? It just seemed weird to me. Obviously, there must have been some significance, but I have reached the point where I sort of zone some things totally out, (if they seem too silly). Right now, that is a Major part of the show, it seems. Maybe things will pick up during the Expo....sure hope so!
I just have a very bad feeling that Fern is going to screw things up AGAIN and push Lety away. sigh.

After seeing Lety march into Conceptos with the cuartel, I realized that she is acting more childish than ever. She would be great at a daycare center where she can march and still be the leader. It was a good thing that no other handsome men were around because they would have fallen madly in love with her after seeing her march.

I am confused (again)! What happened to the winter coats they were wearing? Did they ditch them in a downstairs locker area? Outside they were dressed for cold weather but when they got upstairs they were wearing their usual warmer weather clothing!!!!
If Fern was suppose to be gone about 3 weeks, what was the deal with the calender pages turning?
Was it 3 weeks or several months????

I'm still loving this show but am getting more and more confused!!!

Carrie L.

I did find it interesting that Aldo was teaching Erasmo to say "chef" with a hard "ch" (like in "church" or "choo-choo"). Is that how it would really be pronounced in Mexico or is this just how Aldo thinks it should be pronounced in English?

Also I agree there must be a hidden coat-check closet on the first floor since no one exits the elevator with their coats on! (Maybe that's where Celso sleeps?)

LAURA

Forgot to add that I think I've figured out the subplot here:

Conceptos is obviously intersecting the Twilight Zone! (Maybe they once did commercials for the series?) I think that picture of Einstein in Tomas' office is what helped clue me in. (Relativity...time and space...black holes?) This must be why time moves ever-so-slowly on meeting days (nearest the Twilight Zone intersecting vortex) and yet passes so quickly (20 days turn into several months yet pass as mere hours - while does anybody really know what time it is?) when characters are outside of the office. I think the vortex also must be sucking IN commercials from outside the confines of the show! Maybe making coats disappear as well?

LAURA

It would be "Chef" with a hard Ch in español (como Chevere!)
