Destilando 4/18 - In which Aaron anticipates bonbons but gets spinach, and then gets socked again.

  • The Montalvo family is in their skyscraper in Mexico City. They've gathered for a board meeting. It begins with champagne as Aaron and Minerva smugly announce their pregnancy. Aaron's mother (who was Hipolita's weevily mother in Alborada) squints happily as she daydreams about her son raking in all the spoils as per Amador's will.

Rod happily and graciously toasts the parents-to-be.

  • In this very same skyscraper, on the very same floor, Gaviota is being interviewed by Aaron's henchman Medina. Rod is but a few feet away, pacing back and forth, trying to get Roman or James on the phone. He wants them to hire more detectives now that he remembers Gaviota's real name. She's right behind him when he is whispering her name and saying he's desperate. What a tease.

  • Gaviota (aka Maria Franco Villarreal) tells scads of lies to Medina. She took this curriculum, that curriculum, she was in management at the Holly Hill Hospital in London and ran a chain of Italian restaurants in Paris with Benvenuto Verduci. And of course, "I speak English and French and a little German." She says she doesn't have her papers with her; Medina says if she's chosen she'll have to come up with the documents and her references will be called. "I left Europe to work at home because I was tired of being cold, my nose was red and my teeth chattered." She pointlessly tells him the lengths of various rivers - the longest is in Mexico. He asks if she's an experienced editor. She says not really, but she learns fast and is very responsible.

  • Counting the little chicken before it's hatched... Aaron's mother doesn't want to be called Granny, rather, something affectionate like "Tita." Aaron says he will name his son Aaron. Have they not considered that 50% (approximately) of births are female?

  • Aaron's executive secretary, the mature and competent Elvira, enters the boardroom with papers; Rod laughs incredulously to think of his cousin with such an unsexy secretary.

Aaron calls her an "android" but boasts he'll be choosing his next secretary bonbon from a bevy of beauties; he suggests Rod come interview them with him. "Will you be 'casting' in a motel?" "No, first I select one, the hotel comes later." Minerva is watching and thoughtbubbles: "You'll be surprised to see your new secretary." She has told Medina that she, Minerva, will be hand-picking the final candidates.

Minerva leaves the meeting for a bit to sequester herself with Medina and pick over the job aspirants' resumes. "Is my husband choosing a model or a secretary?" "He's fussy about appearances." Minerva looks at Gaviota's resume and snorts, "I remember her, forget it, with her body he'll make her a Vice-President in a week."

  • TWB tells Sofia she loves the new deluxe apartment and hopes it will keep Rod in the city. Sofia reveals the "macho" will Amador left behind - it's winner-gets-all in the race to produce a little (male) heir. "So you HAVE to get pregnant." TWB fears that will be difficult since she and Rod have never had sex - she's tried everything. "The only thing I haven't done is disguise myself as a jimadora"

  • At the hotel, Sra Flavia busts Gaviota. Sarcastic rhetorical questions: Why are you so late? Are you in fact sick as your healer mother feared? Did you go to the doctor dressed like that? Gav tells a bunch more lies and gets away with it. Nancy wants to hear all about the interview. "I didn't meet Aaron but I got his card. Tomorrow I'll be his new secretary."

  • In the boardroom, a Powerpoint presentation: "Montalvo tequila around the world." I say, in chorus with Sofia and TWB:, "The tedious ciphers are over, I hope." In conclusion, Montalvo had its biggest, most profitable quarter ever.

Aaron rubs it in: "Dad, in my first time out I did better than you ever did." Dad doesn't mind. Aaron and Patricio will bring the business to new heights.

The lawyer says, "Don't forget the importance of the excellent agave crop, for which Rod deserves the credit."

Aaron wants to make more expensive, upscale tequila to capture a wealthier consumer base.

Everybody wants Rod to stay in the city. He demurs. "My parents never left the land and I won't either."

Aaron asks lawyer Videgaray about the mysterious undisclosed provision in his grandfather's will. "It can't be revealed for three more years."

  • Gav gets home from work. Clara marvels over Gav's hair and imagines what a wonderful vision she must have been, entering the interview in her magnificent white dress with gold ribbon (over which Clara slaved all night).

Gav admits she didn't wear the romantic white dress : "It's meant for an elegant party, not work." She shows the suit she bought "as an investment" and tells Clara she had to tell a lot of lies.

Clara is horrified to hear the only true datum Gav presented at her interview was her contact number. She even fears Gav could go to jail. "Ma, I had to, I want to be an important executive." "This isn't the way! I'm disgusted. I don't want a chapucera for a daughter." [slapdash, botched]

Gav gets mad. "Should I have told the truth, that I'm a migrant worker, that I don't even know my own father's name."

They make up, even though Clara's still worrying that all those lies will come back and bite Gav, and maybe Rod will show up. "If he does, he'll find Maria Villarreal, a woman very different from the one he knew."

  • Granny, Sofia, TWB and Rod are in the apartment, which it turns out is a belated wedding present. Rod says it's an unnecessary expense. "Not if you visit more often."

After Granny and Sofia leave, TWB starts wheedling again and Rod curtly says it's no use, he isn't going to be staying, in fact they'll be leaving shortly. "But I like being near my parents." "Come here whenever you like, I don't have to come with you. Anyway, don't unpack, we're going back to the hacienda tomorrow." He wants to leave in the morning but she begs for an extension to the evening so she can shop.

  • Isadora's parents arrive as Rod is leaving. Her dad admits he's bankrupt.

  • Aaron is muy impactado when he sees the passel of feas his wife has chosen. He throws their resumes on the floor in a snit. Medina says they are well qualified and intelligent. "You know perfectly well what kind of secretary I want, and she doesn't need to be smart, I have Elvira for that." He says there isn't time for a new announcement, and why did Medina make such mediocre selections?

Medina admits it was Minerva's doing.

Aaron chooses the least ugly one and gives her the job, saying "don't think of making an alliance with Elvira, much less my wife. Everthing that happens in my office is secret."

Rod arrives and, once again, Aaron rides him about his "problem" saying, "I'm glad the jimadora got you over that hump - she must be a real professional." Rod socks him again, saying, "Gaviota is the love of my life."

  • Finally, at the hotel Gav is driving her friend Nancy crazy with her impatient waiting for the call offering her the Montalvo job. Since Aaron has, however reluctantly, hired somebody else, the call, obviously, doesn't come.

Gav decides to be proactive: she'll go see Aaron.

I love the suspense that is in progress with Rod and Gavi almost within touching distance of each other. But I know that it's too soon for them to find each other. So it looks like we're in for a very interesting twist in the story. Bring it on ....

Thanks, Melinama! Early on I realized that these things are like roller coaster rides and the only thing I could do was to hang on till it was over and just enjoy the ride. It looks like this one is a monster, too!!

The first thing Gaviota is going to ask Rodrigo is--if he is still married. Of course, that's something he's had a YEAR to do, or at least to START the fight! (Since he's so in love?) That's why she left in the first place. I guess Rod having no common sense just adds to the ride...

Thanks, Melinama~~~It was very frustrating to watch Gavi being interviewed while we watched through the open door as HotRodrigooo paced in the hallway. Are they playing with our emotions or what??? And all that lying on a resume and in an interview..uh-oh. However, seeing HotRod sock AAron at the end of the episode was very rewarding. I'd like to see AAron punched at least once in each and every episode..that's good television. I noticed that in the previews TWB was in a lingerie store shopping for red panties. Does she really think that they will do the trick? My father-in-law [charmer that he was] used to say, ''I like red no matter what it hangs on.'' Maybe TWB is hoping that the same will be true of HotRod, or perhaps, she is thinking of the effect that red has on bulls in the bullring. Ole!!! ...Good luck with that , Isa. HotRod seems pretty steadfast and staunch in his devotion to his jimadora...Isa may have to resort to drugging her prey like Jos did. Thud.^^^Susanlynn, looking for the red cardigan

Wonderful recap! My favorite part, aside from Aaron getting punched, obviously, was the interaction between Clarita and Gaviota. I'm not sure why, but I like it when they are on screen together. Runner up is any time Aaron is foiled or frustrated. Who was it said his face does muscular gyrations previously unknown to humankind? Well they were right.

Rod...as we used to say in high school about the big lugs, cute but an airhead.

Thanks Melinama!

I almost felt sorry for TWB last nite***sneaking off in corner***, and I was squeeked out by the Sofie, "Ride em and rope em" conversation with TWB, ewwwww that is your brother. Here is an idea Sofie, get a frickin job. She is in MX DF and using up limited oxygen that more productive people could be using..Arrrrggggg.

Now Aaron, he is sooooo ready to snap. What is up with Sexateri boinking? Why doesn't he just do the time honored practice of rich guys in Mexico (and elsewhere) of getting a real amante...You'll never get ahead Aaron, being such a lazy slacker.

Beckster~~~Loved your insightful comments....right on the money and very pragmatic. My favorite line : ''Rope 'em and ride 'em.'' Succinct and to the point. Do you think that our little rodeo hopeful will be successful in her attempts to do that ???? I hope not....I do not want that to happen. ^^^Susanlynn, saying no to the yeeeehaaa for Isa

p.s. I have a friend who is a fireman whose favorite expression is : ''That guy is such an oxygen waster.'' Good call on Sofie, Beckster.

I can really identify with Aaron's HR guy. I used to work in HR in another life and one time was tasked to find a secretary for one of the VP's. He was a notorious jerk with a reputation for boinking the help. He told me that he knew we had to hire based on merit, but if the candidate wasn't a complete and total fox he would NOT agree to hire her. Needless to say we went through several very beautiful "secretaries" with varying degrees of capabilities. He flamed them all out, one by one, by being rude to them, bringing them to tears, and basically torturing them one way or another. Finally, just after one of them quit, he had to go to Europe. I interviewed a woman, Faye, who was fantastic; she had all the required skills, was very bright, a Southern belle, and an ex-beauty queen...from 30 yrs. ago! She reminded me of Flo the waitress (kiss my grits!). So I called the jerk in Europe and told him we found the perfect secretary for him, I gave him all the details but I left out her age and he didn't ask. He was fit to be tied when he returned. He tried all his tricks to piss her off, make her cry, etc. but no matter what he did she always one-upped him. She raised several sons and knew how to deal with bad little boys. She was exactly what he needed and was his secretary until he got rich and retired.

I think Aaron needs his own Faye.

Beckster, oxygen waster is the perfect name for so many of these folks-especially at Duelo! So right, Sofie needs to try working for a living. It would be a good thing for TWB and keep her out of those lingerie shops.

Gav and Clarita have good chemistry as mother and daughter. Kind of a push/pull, but also alot of love.

I love all the other-novela flashbacks that Clarita has. I wasn't expecting to see Gabe/Demian from Mundo in this show, but with the magic of flashbacks, there's just no telling who you might see. ;)

I'm on board with this notion of having Aaron getting punched in every episode. Bring it one!

Sylvia~~Interesting story about your former life in HR. That must be a difficult job to do. It's hard to believe that there are still bosses like Asshat AAron out there. I used to have a boss [head of the English / ESL/ Language Dept] who was creepy. He was always sidling up to me in the halls commenting on my jewelry, clothing, shoes etc....Ewwww....Never once did he say anything about my teaching abilities. He also occasionally fell asleep in meetings. What a prize. The college finally somehow got rid of him after about 10 years of incompetence. His secretary Shirley was a jewel , organized, polite, competent [a tiny, lovely whitehaired sweetheart]. Shirley saved his a** on many, many occasions, but she couldn't save him from himself.

susanlynn, I was watching during the presentation and your comment on Duelo about boring meetings with powerpoint came to mind.

I am very curious as to what the rest of the will says. I hoping time flies.

Yes, I wonder what is in that special portion of the will. Also, I am hoping that Minnie is carrying a girl. That will make AAron go ballistic which would be fun to watch. I like to watch A and M snarling at each other in their constant struggle to be the big dog.

p.s. Funny you should mention the power point meeting. Today, I sat through a power point speech by my Korean student. However, it was interesting and welldone. Many of my students are great with technology. Now, the power point presentations by my bosses...not so interesting.

See basically I am kinda despicable cause I like Aaron...he is soooo slithery, if you shook his hand you have to go wash them.

I don't mind him getting smacked around, cause he does "facial tendons of fury", I bet he has to sleep with one of those dental things to keep from grinding his teeth.

I think he is kinda hawt in a totally lets screw the company into the ground kinda way.

Aaron's mother is way too serial she looks like she has been after te family coffers for a very long time.

Aaron's dad on other had looks like he loves Rod more that his son, maybe Aaron is not his son and he knows it and there grandad knew it thats why there is another will.

Well hot Rod's sister is more like Pilar... u know the kind that will do anything to preserve the family name and coffers. This kinda makes me wonder what Pilar has been up to...je!je!je it would be scandalous if her sons were not fathered by her husband, because he refused to play bed bingo with her and gavi being his love child and the only heir to the coffers LOL!

I'm new to the novela world and addicted already. Even though Rod and Gav are my favorites, for reasons unknown I also like bad guys like Aaron and Isa. (In mundo de fieras I loved sour puss Mariam). That is not to say that I like wicked ways because in real life I despise those characteristics. However, on the screen it is entertaining and adds excitement. I don't mind if Aaron gets punced in every episode because it's he has a neon sign over his head that reads "hit me", "hate me". So, whever he comes on the scene I can't wait to see whose buttons he's going to push. We all know he's not going to win in the end so I thought that was a very interesting comment from the person who said that he may be adopted or something else that makes him not entitled to the inheritence. In fact, I'm willing to bet that his baby will be a boy. That will be a distraction and buy time and keep the suspense going. I'll bet that this story is happening over a period of 4 years. For most of that time they will have us thinking that Aaron has qualified. Rod and Gav's boy won't be born until the final episodes.
