Destilando Amor - April 17, 2007 Grumbles, Mumbles and Daydreams

*Sofia talks with Minnie and Granny about the men in the family (Aaron and his mistress secretaries; Rod; and Grandpa) - Granny finishes her thought about how honorable and trustful Grandpa was with her and their marriage; Minnie and Sofia are about to leave when Granny blurts out "not that I know about" (in reference to Grandpa having any children with mistresses, I think.)

* Sylvia shows Aaron the want ads in the newspapers for his secretary position - he can't be bothered and tells her to take them away and leave him alone. He grumbles to himself.

* Gavi and Nancy are at the hotel front desk - Nancy is laughing about Gavi's idea to go apply for the secretary position with Montalvo Inc. Gavi is serious about going to apply over lunch - Nancy laughs - Gavi is determined and focused.

* Minnie stops by the offices and talks with Sylvia about Aaron. As Minnie heads for Aaron's door, Sylvia shows her the want ads and asks her for an explanation. Minnie is surprised. Aaron comes out and says hello to his wife - they make small talk - Aaron pats Minnie's belly and tells her to go home, relax and take care of their baby. He re-enters his office and shuts the door behind him, in Minnie's face. Minnie and Sylvia talk - Minnie walks away.

* Minnie meets with the Human Resources Director (HRD) about the secretary position for his husband. She asks about the hiring process - as he explains, she says she wants to help select the perfect secretary for her husband.

* Gavi returns home to apartment - mama Clara has dinner ready and waiting on the table. Gavi smiles and shows mama the want ad.

* Back at the ranch, Rod is buried in paperwork in the office. Isa enters to say dinner and everything is ready. Rod says go ahead without him, he's busy. She tries to distract him and pull him away. He pushes her away - She leaves.

* Gavi and Clara have dinner and discuss the ad for Aaron's secretary at Montalvo Inc. Clara glares at her and thinks it is just a way for her to get close to Rod. Gavi says Aaron is Rod's cousin and working for him would be totally different. Clara grimaces as she recalls meeting the family as a young girl. (PERSONAL SIDE NOTE: Tell me I'm just seeing things but I think Fernando and Adela made cameo appearances in these MLDB/Leave it to Beaver flashbacks; Adela - the young girl in long wavy hair at the table in scene 1; Fernando - one of the young gents laughing at the table in scene 2.) Gavi laughs as she assures her mama of her intentions.

* Dani is at rehearsals at the theater; On break, Sofia calls her on her cell phone - Sofia tells Dani everything is ready for the family conference, except for Dani being there. Dani laughs and reminds her sister that she really doesn't care that much about the business. Sofia then brings up Isa and Rod's marriage problems with Dani - Dani gives her opinions - Sofia is upset and hangs up. Sofia then grumbles to herself.

* As they clean up their dishes, Gavi and Clara continue discussing the secretarial position with Aaron. Clara is still upset and doesn't want Gavi to apply - Gavi tells Clara her dream of getting them a bigger, better place to live. Clara is still worried about Gavi meeting Rod again. Gavi does her best to assure her mama.

* At daybreak, Gavi wakes up to the sound of the sewing machine. Clara has been up all night working on something - a dress for Gavi to wear to her interview. Gavi smiles and thanks her mom for making it for her - Clara said she used one of the dresses she saw on "Contra Viento y Marea" as an example. Gavi sighs as Clara takes the dress to the other room and gets breakfast ready.

* Rod and Isa in the car - Rod remembers Gavi working in the agave fields. Isa interrupts his daydream to grumble about the drive.

* Nancy laughs as Gavi shows her the dress her mom made for her to wear to the interview. Nancy tells Gavi to be careful with the boss lady (Flavia), she's on the warpath. Gavi wonders what she can do to cover so she can leave early.

* While Isa sleeps in the car, Rod is driving along amusing himself with memories of Gaviota - he finally remembers the conversation where she tells him her name is Teresa Hernandez. He says the name outloud and Isa wakes up. He covers for his outburst. Isa goes back to sleep.

* Gavi goes into Flavia's office. Gavi asks for time off, due to the illness that she picked up from her mom, who was sick with it on the ranch. Flavia isn't interested in the excuse and refuses the time-off - Gavi says either let her leave or she will infect everyone here including the guests and turn the hotel into a quarantined hospital. Flavia tells her to leave and get well. Gavi happily leaves the office.

* Nancy finishes helping clients. Gavi runs up and happily tells her it worked, she can leave early today. Nancy shows Gavi a photo in a magazine - Gavi is surprised.

* On a pit stop on the highway, Rod is near the car - he calls James on his cell phone - as he starts to tell James that he remembers Gavi's real name, Teresa Hernandez, Isa appears and listens intently to the conversation.

* Nancy and Gavi go shopping - Don Bernardo comes over to help Gavi select the perfect (and affordable) outfit to wear to her interview.

* Isa turns into the jealous wife while listening to the phone conversation. She walks over to Rod and starts to ask him about the call - Rod snaps back that it is in reference to his search for Gavi. Isa shuts up and goes back around the truck to climb in.

* Clara and the apartment owner have lunch together and Clara grumbles about her worries for Gavi and the job interview at Montalvo Inc.

* Gavi pays Don Bernardo for the outfit - Don Bernardo leaves to finish the transaction - Nancy builds up Gavi's confidence and says how elegant she will look for the interview.

* Rod and Isa arrive at Granny's mansion in the city. Granny and Sofia happily welcome them. They sit down. Rod starts to mention James; Sofia turns sour and doesn't want to hear it. Rod asks about his cousin and aunt and uncle. Granny says Bruno is in the office - Rod is about to go when Bruno and Fedra appear and say hello. Minnie joins the family as Bruno and Fedra fill Rod in on Patricio's trip for work. As they go to the dining room, Minnie excuses herself - Isa accompanies her.

* Outside, Isa tells Minnie that Rod remembers Gavi's real name, Teresa Hernandez. Minnie is shocked. Isa is outraged.

* Nancy accompanies Gavi to the hair salon.

* Out on the terrace, Sofia talks to Rod about Granny and Grandpa's marriage and their parents. He listens as she continues to give her opinions over him winning the contest and having a son before Aaron and Minnie. He tells her not to worry about that. That's all she can do, she tells him - she frustrated by the situation and doesn't want them to lose everything to Aaron. He tells her to have faith in him. Maid enters and interrupts - Rod tells Sofia that he doesn't love Isa and never will.

* Fedra, Bruno, Granny and Isa are at the table. Maid tells them that Rod and Sofia are out talking and will there shortly. They wonder about the conversation and his search for Gaviota. Isa starts to lose her appetite.

* Rod and Sofia discuss Gaviota, her pregnancy with his baby, the real reason she went to London. Sofia tries to convince him to give up and stay with Isa. Rod says Gavi is the woman he loves - Sofia says if he divorces Isa, it could ruin the family financially.

* At the company, an interviewee tries to ask Sylvia for help with the application. Sylvia is busy and brushes her away. Gavi enters the lobby. The receptionist hands her an application and gives her instructions.

* Sylvia meets with Minnie in the hall. HRD finishes with an interviewee. Minnie talks to him about the interviews and reminds him that she wants to offer her opinions about the person hired. She walks away. He calls the next lady into his office. Gavi sits in the lobby and fills out her application as the other ladies talk about their work experiences. Gavi remembers her false identity in Paris and London and the clown she met on the street - she decides to write the name 'Mariana' on the application.

* Gavi takes her application back to the receptionist. Receptionist tells her not to worry about the photo. Gavi says thank you.

* Clara plays for protection for Gavi and keep her safe at the job interview.

* Minnie talks with HRD about the interviews. As she is about to walk away, she spots Gavi standing on the other side of the lobby.

* Granny, Rod, Bruno and Fedra arrive outside the company's building.

* HRD asks Gavi into his office for her interview.

* Rod, Bruno, Granny and Fedra enter the offices - they greet the guard and receptionist. Minnie greets them and escorts them back to the conference room. As Rod fumbles with a file in the lobby, Nestor greets him. Someone greets the HRD who is in the middle of Gavi's interview (Gavi turns to see him).

Thanks, J.R.! Great suspense near the end last night. I'd totally forgotten about that faked name on the passport.

I didn't notice Adela in Clara's flashback, but I thought Fernando was sitting at the dining table. He had his head turned away from the camera, but it sure looked like him. I've noticed that a lot of the heroines in telenovelas are redheads : Adela in Amor Real, Lucero in Alborada, and now Angelica in Desti. Also, has anyone else noticed that the hacienda's livingroom and staircase are Manuel's from San Cayetano in Amor Real? The bedroom that TWB sleeps in was Matilde's in her parents' house, I think...same balcony doors. Now, why would Gavi decide to go to work for AAron ? Has she ever met that snake? And how long will they string out the plotline until Gavi and HotRodrigooo finally meet. I have a funny feeling that there will be a lot of near misses to make us sigh and stew. Isa's outfit [the pedal pushers and lowcut shirt] made me think that she was trying out to be the next Pussycat Doll. ^^^Susanlynn, looking for some kneehigh boots

Thanks for the great recaps!

Can anyone tell me why Gaviota and Clara address each other using the formal "usted" since they are supposed to be mother and daughter? Did I miss something?

Thanks! Ali

I "visit" Destilando more than I watch it and rely on the recaps to fill in the details. Seems to me that Clara, Gavi's mother, has a childish or childlike persona. Any backstory on this?

About the ''usted''...A Domincan student of mine told me that children address their parents with ''usted'' as a sign of respect. He said that it would be very disrespectful for a child to use ''tu'' with a parent.

Agree about Clarita..she does have that wide-eyed look, something seems to be a bit off there. I was having a serious LOL moment when Rod was using the phone and TWB, was behind him...AssHat..why do people always do that? I don't want TWB to know what I am saying so I will simply turn my back and scream....It's like little kids that put their hands over their eyes so no one can see them!!!!
^^^Becky, wearing my knee high boots and on my way to borrow "Thelma's riding crop"

I guess I totally misinterpreted those Leave it to Beaver flashbacks. I didn't realize that Clara was remembering meeting the Montalvos as a youngster. I thought she was giving her opinion of powerful families based on flashbacks from other novelas. I thought I recognized Edith Gonzales made up early-90's style in the first one, and I thought Clara said something about Esmerelda for the other one. (I've never seen Esmerelda, but I'm aware of it!)

I have an idea about Rodrigoo and Gaviota.
SHe is the love child of Clara and the old man, and Rod's mother( of the poppy eyes) had an interlude with a wandering field hand and had
Rodrigoo. That's why she loves him so much (and why she's so nasty about the lowly field hands.)
This is probably wrong, but it suits me for now.

I've decided I like Rod the Bod better with his glasses and without his hair slicked down. Ohh, and the unbuttoned shirts are nice too.

Another vote for Rod with glasses! He just looks so much more serious and, well, corruptable with them on.

I haven't seen this episode yet but I can't wait to try to spy Fernando in Clara's flashbacks.

Sylvia, Fernandolera #2 behind Susanlynn.

The flashbacks of meeting the family were of other telenovelas. I remember seeing Rosa Salvaje which was the first one shown, and I thought I recognized the rich evil sisters of husband the poor Rosa marries. I didn't see the second novela though. It does kind of make sense since Clarita was talking about other telenovelas. Although the dress she made Gaviota made me cringe. Even for her, how could she think that would be appropriate for an interview?

It looked like a party dress... for a young girl.

I think Clarita's off-ness, or whatever you call it, is just because she's lived out in the country all her life. And I WAS going to say that her cluelessness about fashion was due to that as well, but if she's been watching telenovelas, she ought to know what a businesswoman dresses like. It's a good thing Gaviota is more observant! (She must get that from her dad, lol...)

I guess I was wrong about Edith Gonzales because she's not in the cast list for Rosa Salvaje.

The second flashback was the 1997 version of Esmeralda (not to be confused with the 2004 version from Brazil), and whoever thought they saw the Hot One, aka Fernando Colunga, wow - sharp eyes! Apparently, that was him! Even when I paused the picture, I didn't see any familiar faces. (I haven't seen FC in a novela yet, but I've seen pictures!)

Here's the link to the Esmeralda page on IMDB. I recognized another name in the cast list - Nora Salinas, the chick who plays Carolina in LFMB.

Speaking of LFMB, when Gaviota described the secretarial applicants as "elegant, poised," etc. did she remind anyone else of Alicia Ferreira? Does anyone else think that wasn't just a coincidence?

Sorry to obsess over this, but I just found out that Edith Gonzales was in at least one episode of Rosa Salvaje. So I guess that really was her in flashback #1 ??

Wouldn't it be interesting if Minerva helps Gavi get the job? I think Minerva was looking at Gavi's pant suit with approval. The other women were in short skirts. Aaron would be in shock to have a secretary who doesn't fawn all over him. And we know what she'll do it he makes a move on her!

I think Rod looks good with glasses, without glasses, with a shirt, without a shirt....but he looks best whenever he smiles his big smile............Becky T

I couldn't figure out whether Minerva recognized Gavi or not. Last night I thought she seemed suspicious when she saw her - but now that you mention it, maybe she was intrigued to see someone who was dressed for a job and not for a party!

Sylvia~~You are so polite. I was touched by the fact that you named yourself Fernandolera #2 after me. Your generosity and selflessness has not gone unnoticed and will not go unrewarded. So, we are HotRod-the Bod-rigooo Rangerettes and Fernandoleros??? I spyed Fernandito at the table during Luba's thought bubble --his head is turned away from the camera , but I have watched him enough on Youtube and dvds of Amor Real and Alborada to recognize him from any angle with any hairstyle . I think that with my observation skills , I could be valuable to the FBI or CIA. By the way, I am so proud of myself . This morning my former student from Colombia spoke to me in Spanish ,and I UNDERSTOOD her !!![She asked me when my birthday was.] Then, my Dominican students talked to me in Spanish, and I UNDERSTOOD them . I couldn't believe it ! I really am learning a little something while watching hot dudes. Who knew ??? As for the glasses, I have always liked guys in glasses...HotRodrigooo is too cute in those little wirerims. When he wears them , it's like ''I'm hot...and I'm smart.'' The first time I met my hub was in the high school library. He wasn't wearing glasses, but he had on a lettersweater and he was carrying an ENORMOUS book. I thought-bubbled, ''Wow! Look at that cute guy with the black hair and the broad shoulders ...and look at that BIG book...he must really be smart.'' Then, my thought bubble burst when he told me, ''I always look for a book with a jacket when I have to do a book report because ....I copy my report from the cover.'' Bubble burst. However, it turned out that he was smart.. ..just a little lazy about studying. ~~~Susanlynn, going to look for that old letter sweater

Julie: I thought I recognized The Great One (FC) and also a younger Edith with strawberry blonde hair myself. No, it was not your imagination.
==
Sylvia: I am with you about attractive guys in glasses! I love to make passes at smart guys with glasses. It always made those furtive looks at a girl more seductive, and yes, it was a lot of fun "subverting" the "studious" kind and turning them into "bad boys" for a while......

Interesting that a family who seems to be concerned with appearance and propriety, they don't seem to mind that TWB dresses like a slut.

So cute, Susanlynn, you could work for the CIA/FBI if they were looking for Fernando or Rodrigoooo, otherwise, well,...
jb

Hot Rod -the Bod who looks like a god-rigooo definitely looks better with the glasses on. It kind of lends to the image of the studious (recently lost) innocence of his character.

"Oh No I fear the passes at asses in glasses"...would be lost on Rod cause right now he couldn't find SMART with his glasses and a dictionary....
This does not mean I am not a Rod's Rangerette...it only means the pom-poms are sagging a bit

Did anyone notice the woman who went in for the interview before Gaviota? She looked like Miss Puebla in LFMB beauty contest, the one that Lety befriended.
This is only the 2nd novela I have watched, so what's all this talk about Fernando Colunga? I can't imagine anyone ever taking the place of Jamie Camil.
Miranda

thanks susan, julie and jardinera for the ID help with the flashbacks. I thought I was seeing things as I was watching and writing last night. So the girl in the first scene was a very young Edith not Adela - I knew she looked familiar; and that was our favorite hero FC in the second. And thanks for pointing out which telenovelas Clara was talking about.

J.R. :)

Hi Miranda,

To quickly explain Fernando Colunga, while I'm relatively new to novelas, he was great in "Alborada." Not only did he look great in period outfit (colonial Mexico 19th century), he has an incredible body as well (which was shown often, yeah). Then the character he played was smart and passionate. And he had great male friends too (who were also handsome and smart).

As far as galans are concerned, I'm with Susanlynn, there is no reason I have to pick one. Anyone one of these men is great fodder for fantasy. FC is great and so is Jamie Camil our Hot Rod, Guy Ecker and the guy who plays Omar on LFMB. I'm sure other can give you the merits or demerits of others.

I hope this helps,
Karen

Bravo Edith! I thought that looked like her in the flashback. Thanks to all for the clarifications and info. I'm looking forward to finding out more about Clarita's past -- the plot thickens.

Thanks also for the info about Colunga, although I have no complaints about our current galan. ;)

Susannah

Miranda: Although Alma Latina has not been kept up since 2005, that site has pictures and cross references to various actors and productions and is in both English and in Spanish.
http://www.almalatina.net/telenovelas.shtml

Look at the bottom of the page to find actors/actresses, etc. You can follow their links to publicity pictures of Fernando

Susanlynn, I'm not that polite, just well aware of my own self-preservation. I would never even think of getting between you and Fernandooooo.

I loved the story about you meeting your hub, very cute.

Sylvia~~~Let me just say something...............PIRATES. ~~~Susanlynn, getting whippedinto a frenzy and lovinggg it

I just caught a glimpse of the Punisher just when EY appeared. What a coinkydink!

This novela flashback made me realize I think I have seen tooo many. They are actually giving Rosa Salvaje on Telefutura at 8:00 a.m. Unfourtanely they have replaced the Edith Gonzalez character with some other person.

I saw Esmeralda a looong time ago. I guess that would be my first FC novela that I remember him from. I didn't like him in it, he did stupid things. He was in some with Thalia but don't remember him.

P.S. Rod with his glasses, very very, cute, very Clark Kentish. I just realized how old Rod is, he's too old for me.
