Zorro Tues. April 17 - Esme's mother escapes from the prison but at what cost?

Esme recaps the situation with her mother and Olmos for Zorro and then faints. Z promises not to let anything happen with her mother.

Montero parades Sgt. Garcia before all the other troops and tells him that he is being demoted in rank for insubordination, lack of discipline and cowardice. Garcia protests that the charge is unfair but Montero shuts him up – he shouldn’t have disobeyed Montero’s order to kill the filthy farmer family. Pizarro comes and reads a proclamation demoting Garcia from sergeant to ordinary soldier and rips off his epaulets. While this is going on, Garcia sees the gypsies climbing up on the roof of the prison. He tries to pass this information on to Montero and Pizarro but they tell him as an ordinary soldier, he has no right to speak and Garcia says the equivalent of ‘Whatever you say’.

Bernardo brings Zorro his weapons and Zorro says that he is going to raise hell at the prison.

Montero tells Garcia that if he disobeys orders one more time, he will be shot even if he is related to the controller of the army.

On the roof, Orange-shirt gypsy tells Renzo and Blue-bandanna gypsy that a soldier saw them and wonders why the soldier didn’t say anything. Renzo says that former Sgt. Garcia is a good guy and helped him when he was in prison and won’t betray them.

The Indians are apparently planning to burn Yumalai at the stake because she shacked up with a white guy instead of killing man-with-one-eye. Alejandro (who seems to have lost his shirt) protests but no one cares. Just as Adriel is about to stick a spear in Yumalai, a whole bunch of guys in big floppy sombreros coming running over the hill. These are the workers from the hacienda that Dolores sent to keep an eye on Alej since she had a bad feeling about the White Buffalo trip.

A melee ensues. The workers free Alej. Alej wrests the spear from Adriel. Adriel says to Alej that Yumalai must die for her betrayal even if Adriel dies with her. Alej channels Yoda and says, “Undignified is the warrior who fights with betrayal,” throws away the spear and he and Adriel start wrestling. Yumalai is still tied to the stake. [Did the Indians bring a stake with them? Did they find a tree with a straight 6 foot trunk, cut it down, sand it smooth and set it in the ground while Alej and Yumalai waited?]

Fernando and Maria Pia are in church smiling at each other while the priest drones on in Latin.

Alej and his boys defeat the Indians. Alej refuses to kill Adriel. Yumalai is freed from the stake and runs over and embraces Alej’s manly (and bare) chest.

It’s the first time in days we’ve seen how Nutty Nun is getting on. She is shivering like she has a fever while Father Tomas and the Cardinal look on. FT says that he has never seen NN so ill and the Cardinal says that maybe she is possessed by a demon. At this moment, NN sits up in bed, screams like a banshee and then falls back unconscious. Sister Carola decides NN is possessed and runs out of the room. The Cardinal suggests sending to the Vatican for an expert on exorcism. [On novela time, how long could that possibly take – a week, maybe?] PT, who has extremely modern ideas about mental illness, says that NN is not possessed. She came to the convent seeking God – not insanity. ‘Whatever,’ says the Cardinal, ‘but if she doesn’t get better, I’m not consecrating the internado into a convent. PT wishes Maria Pia were here and Camba is watching from the doorway.

Olmos is carrying an unconscious Mangle in her underwear around the hacienda. He ducks into an alcove to avoid Dolores.

Alej tells Adriel that he has ‘disturbed the peace of his tribe’ but White Buffalo will judge what he has done. [How can the actors say this stuff and not burst out laughing?] Yumalai also wants to tell WB and all her tribe what her heart is feeling.

Olmos deposits an unconscious Mangle someplace and says he will come back rich and be with her or he’ll be dead with his last thought being the sensation of touching her lips.

In spite of the fact that Zorro had better get a move on since the betrayed rescue attempt by the gypsies is already happening, he has hangs around in the grass until Esme wakes up. He convinces Esme to let Bernardo take her to a safe house that he knows. Esme offers the key to the paper mache mask to Diego but he tells her to keep it and open the mask herself when Zorro brings SK to her. Esme thanks Diego for all he as done for her and Diego tells that she and their son is the reason that he keeps on fighting. They kiss, the Gitana song comes on, they part ever so slowly. Come on, Zorro, time’s a wasting here!

Now Olmos has Mangle covered with a blanket in a carriage. Up comes Gerardo who tells him about Esme’s escape. Olmos is furious. Gerardo has screwed up the plan. The only hope is that the guards kill SK. Because of Gerardo’s failure, Olmos has to return something that is very precious to him and that he was on the point of getting (Mangle?).

A whole gang of gypsies are outside the prison waiting for the changing of the guard. [Some of the gypsies have halberds, a kind of pole weapon used by the Swiss army in the 15th century.] Renzo and his buddies have gotten in to the prison and have surprised Aquirre and and his buddy. Renzo demands that the guards take them to SK.

MP and FS are taking the their wedding vows.

Camba comes into NN’s room with a dish of burning coals and a bunch of leaves. He unties NN and chants something while waving the leaves over her.

The priest is about to declare MP and FS man and wife when Almudena staggers in and says that they cannot marry. FS and MP are impactados.

Bernardo brings Esme to the safe house and takes care of her wound. Bernardo tells her that they must stay there 2 or 3 nights but Esme says she needs to leave immediately. The prison is very dangerous.

Cut to Zorro standing on the roof of the prison. He takes out the guards to the approval of Garcia who is in a prison cell.

Renzo and his buddies get into SK’s cell. SK insists that Hermes escape with them. The gypsies lock Aguirre and his buddy up with the chains that formerly held SK and Hermes. Apparently, the gypsies were to come in shooting and that was the signal for the guards to kill SK but it didn’t go down like that. Aguirre and his buddy are concerned about what Montero will do when he finds that SK is gone and they are in her cell.

The gypsies outside are worried that something has gone wrong. Jonas reveals that he changed Olmos’ plan by having Renzo and his buddies sneak into the prison.

Olmos [who can apparently carry a half-naked unconscious woman anywhere in the town without anyone noticing] has now returned Mangle to her own bed. Olmos curses, then kisses Mangle and swears that someday she will be his and leaves her.

Camba’s chanting and leaf shaking causes NN to dream that she is running around in a long white dress while flower petals fall on her. She wakes up rational and thanks Camba for singing to her (he has a nice voice).

Almudena tells FS that he knows perfectly well why he can’t marry MP or anyone else. FS asks Almudena why she is wrecking his life. After a little back and forth between FS and Almudena with MP yelling for someone to tell her what is going on, Almudena tells MP that FS can’t marry her because he is already married. Esme’s mother, Mercedes, is still alive. MP is super impactada.

In the prison, Renzo, SK and Hermes are waiting for Honas and the rest of the gypsies to make a distraction so that they can escape from the prison. SK is worried. She has a premonition that all is not going to go well.

Orange-shirt gypsy runs into Zorro in the curiously empty corridors of the prison. Zorro tells the gypsy that original plan was a trap and that he and SK should escape by the secret door while Zorro takes care of the guards. At that moment, a guard discovers them.

Back in San Diego, MP begs FS to deny what Almudena has told her. FS doesn’t and MP runs from the church. FS tells Almudena that she has buried him alive.

Montero is chewing out the guards who were supposed to escort Esme but let her escape. He gives them an hour to find her or he will put them in front of a firing squad. When they are gone, he says that Esme had better not be with Diego or he will kill her and rip out her unborn child.

In the safe house, Esme recalls her initial meeting with the gypsies in Spain and the time she saw her mother in the prison. Then she prays to God to keep the gypsies from falling into the trap and to bring Diego back to her arms.

Back at the prison, Zorro is fighting about 10 guards single handed. SK and Hermes escape from the prison [SK is showing quite a rack in her prison outfit]. Some of the gypsies will take SK to safety while others will help Zorro. Zorro is fighting the guards when Pizarro comes into the courtyard and shoots him in the back. He falls. No puede ser! The gypsies look on horrified. The credits roll.

thanks Jean for the wonderful recap.

why does it seem that the best scenes are shown the days that I don't watch.

no! say it ain't so! Zorro can't die!

Jean,

I was thinking the same thing when Esme woke up and asked Diego how long she was out? I started singing the June Carter song "Time's a'wasting."

In my humble opinion, I think it would violate the telenovela laws to kill off the main/title character halfway thru the novela. I'm hoping someone finds him and hides him 'til he's all better. Hey, maybe Esme & mom run off to Spain thinking Diego's dead and when Diego come to, he goes off hunting for her. I'm just guessing here.

I know it's not nice to say this, but I was actually disappointed Olmos brought Mangle back without more than a kiss. I was really hoping he'd drag her off somewhere and we'd be rid of her for good! So much for hoping.

I do think it's a little odd that Adriel wants to kill Yumi for running off with Al when they were OK with Toypurnia doing it. Did they decide that white folks are evil because of FS or is more of an adding insult to injury after she didn't kill FS? Just curious. I guess they borrowed the cannibal's stakes for the burning.

Oh, I think they called the orange-shirt gypsy "Javier." He's supposed to be their best acrobat.

Awaiting tomorrow's episode with baited breath and hoping for an awesome Zorro escape, M

Good call on the halberds Jean. I never would have noticed that.

No wonder Almudena was staggering. Here at work we calculated that in the very best of circumstances, traveling 6 miles per hour from the very bottom of LA to the very top of San Diego it would probably have taken Dena at least 16.7 hours to make the journey. OK, I'll stop snitting about this point once and for all. This week.

I sure am glad the gypsies, especially Renzo, are back in the scenes. They seem to be a never-ending supply of potentially studly men for our viewing pleasure. Do you suppose they will rescue Diego? Maybe Javier will dazzle the soldiers with his acrobatics. I'm dying to know how Zorro gets out of this one.

The whole Indian plot line doesn't make sense to me. I'm confused.

Great recap Jean, thanks!!

I can't believe Zorro was caught! Now everyone will know Diego is Zorro.I do not want to see another Diego being tortured in prison
scene.

Things are moving along a lot more quickly than I expected.

I was afraid that Almudena had been killed in the carriage rollover, I'm glad she survived and glad she stopped the MPia and FS boda.

MPia will be going back to the convent, just as Sister Suplicios is "cured" and becomes her friend - I'm guessing.

Can't wait for tonight and the unmasking of Sara Kali!

I think Olmos got some good gropes in on Mangle before returing her. Just watching him kiss her was about enough for me. Yuck!

Serves Mangle right. As you said yesterday, it's just not nice to fool around with people's feelings like that. She deserves worse.

I wonder if Sara will be able to brush her hair out or if she'll have to cut her hair? It sure looks like a rat's nest to me.

I don't know why my April 17 recap doesn't appear on list of Zorro recaps. I put in "Zorro" as a tag.

This certainly isn't one of those novelas where nothing happens for long periods of time. So far there aren't any obnoxious children either, which is nice.

It would violate all the rules of novelas if the main character died in the middle of a novela. One possibility would be to skip a generation and have Esme's son grow up and become Zorro II but that leaves all the other plotlines unresolved. It is hard to imagine how Zorro is going to get out of the prison without his identity being discovered.

I have a class tonight until 10pm but I'll have to watch the TiVo when I get home to see what happens.

Jean, I've noticed that the recaps don't always get updated on the list very quickly. Yours is on there now. Also your comment about obnoxious children made me remember that Mangle puked. Even with a major hangover that's a big uh-oh in telenovela land. Offspring from her and Monty? Scary thought.

Zorro getting shot has been a big topic of discussion at work today. I can't imagine that after all the whip and swordplay he could pretend to be Diego the fop. We couldn't really figure out how he's going to get out of this mess. As for his identity being uncovered, it kind of spoils the whole point of Zorro-ness if more people find out his identity. Guess we'll find out in a few hours...

Jean, thanks for the terrific recap! I am finally back to a normal schedule and caught up after work today with Monday and Tuesday (hooray for DVR!) Wow, what an exciting episode you had....and more to come. Thanks again.

Jeanne

Great recap! I don't think Zorro will be unmasked. Would ruin the whole novela. Perhaps the gypsies will get him out of there? I purposely never watch the avances as I prefer to be surprised, but sounds like SK is finally unmasked? This, if it does happen, surprises me. I fully expected them to postpone the long-awaited mother-daughter reunion until the last week! Or maybe Esme will already have rushed off when her mom arrives? But she has the key! I also have a class tonight, Spanish Literature and Conversation, but will be racing home at 10:00 to see what happens to the yummy Zorro. I'm also a bit sick of Alejandro's chest. Liked it the first time, but still! Maybe they subsidized his gym membership and want their money's worth! Too bad Mangle wasn't ravished!

thanks jean for the awesome recap.

as for the recap appearing on list it is my understanding you have to get the posted to del.icio.us site. you need to ask blog mom for password. she usually posts them i think she posted something about this before.

i am on pins and needles as to what happens today.

did u notice the major cleavage scene with Esme in the hideout and then a quick edit showed the dress pulled a little higher?

I too noticed SK's prison clothes. I wonder who is it hiding under the mask.

The indian plot is tedious, and Alejandro is such a disapointment. He didn't show ANY restraint, even as a newlywed! I don't find him or his big chest attractive anymore.

Hey funny that yall should mention it but I was ah..... shocked to see Sara Kalis dress/cleavage last night. That low cut bodice almost let her breast fall out. It was when she was about to get into the rescue cart. I swear half her nipple was showing!

Gosh I am impressed with this important piece of information I am sharing. I have sunk so low...... :)

hubby was watching with me and every five seconds he was telling me, did u see that, u could see her (Esme & SK) nipple.

When I first started watching Zorro I was, um, flabbergasted by all the cleavage and heaving breasts, but I think I've become numbed to it. I don't even notice anymore. However, I have noticed that my honey, (who always says "I can't believe you watch this trash"), has taken to moving his laptop into the TV room when I watch Zorro. He says it's so he can be closer to me. Hmmmm, I think I just figured out the real reason! Busted!!!!

ROTFL. I think that's asking too much of my hubby. I asked him if we are going to watch together today and he said no, I let it go yesterday cuz it was finishing.

I wonder if Ferro has noticed all the heaving bosoms and clevage. If I recall, he's become a viewer of Zorro.
