Destilando Amor, Tues 7/31: Our lovers pour on the tequila while Frankie pours on the smarm

Gavi: It's a big city, but apparently it's not big enough that we can't stop running into each other. I could quit my new job, but it doesn't seem fair that I should have to quit because of you, to ruin my future yet again. Don't you think it's time you left me alone?

Rod: Fine. I swear you won't see me, I swear I won't bother you. I wish you lots of luck in your new job. You deserve it. You're a great woman. Everything in that letter was completely true, not a single lie. You'll do well, you'll see. I know I'm losing a great woman.

Gavi: You know what hurts me the most? When I met you, I felt like I was in a dream. I've been dreaming all this time. But nice as it was, it couldn't be. You woke me up. (something like that) I'll never forgive you for that.

Gavi gets in the taxi and rides off.

Rod gets home that night and is greeted by Sofie and Isa. Sofie says she and Frankie want to take him out to dinner for a big surprise. She leaves to get Frankie. Isa tells Rod that Sofie's marrying Frankie. "And not only that, they're going to live in Japan!"

Rodrigo correctly surmises that Isa does not approve of this. She thinks Sofie's not ready for marriage, nor to live so far away. Besides, Pilar's an "older woman" and needs Sofie's company. Rod says true, but his sister has the right to make her own family. Isa wrings her hands nervously as Rod goes off to change. She thought-bubbles that she needs to derail the marriage plans.

Gavi is recounting her many-tequila lunch to Clarita. Clarita's not happy that Gavi turned down the money, while Gavi's not happy he even offered it to her. It just confirmed he believed all the things they'd said about her - that she's only interested in money, that she's for sale, like she has no dignity. Clarita (who seems to have glued something to her temples) disagrees that it's humiliating to take money she's earned. (That's what I'm saying!) They could have gotten their stuff back! She sticks some things onto Gavi's temples and mutters that Gavi's got bats in her belfry (look who's talking) for refusing the money out of humiliation. Living on crumbs is pretty humiliating too.

Gavi retorts that Clarita's dull as a wooden knife. She thought it was her severance check too, until Rodrigo started talking about paying her for her troubles. Then she remembered that he made her a similar offer when she came back from Europe, that he wanted to shack her up and compensate her for her "damages."

They argue some more. Gavi says she'll ask for an advance on her salary to make her feel better. Clarita says it doesn't matter whether she does or not, but if she does, that would be better. :-) She's just glad Gavi met with Rod and they cleared things up. She knew that would happen. Gavi says she's not so sure things are cleared up - he didn't know how Aaron found out they went to Manzanillo together.

Clarita rips the whatchamacallems off her temples and complains about the amount of power these people have to threaten everything, and someday they'll find out the truth of what happened. "So then what?" she asks.

Gavi says Rod went back to his wife. Clarita is impactada but insists Rod is still in love with Gavi. If that family hadn't found out about them, the three of them would be living happily on that island right now.

Gavi says Rod at no time ever said he was still in love with her. Clarita thinks maybe he just forgot! Gavi said they spent all afternoon together, and even when she left he didn't say it. So she told him she never wanted to see him again, and he promised he wouldn't go looking. She thinks he never really loved her. To Rodrigo Montalvo, she was just a little hobby.

Frankie makes his move, and Isa makes hers

At dinner, Frankie formally asks Rod for Sofie's hand. Didn't we do this last week? Rod warmly gives his blessing and says they don't need it anyway; his sister's mature enough to make these decisions on her own. Isa points out they've been novios less than two months - is that long enough to be so sure? Sofia reminds her that her official courtship of Rodrigo was pretty short too, yet they're still together. Isa manages to work her features into a faint yet effective scowl.

Frankie says all that matters is that they're in love. He'll dedicate his life to caring for her. He blings her, and I'm wondering where he came up with the money for that ring. Is it a fake from a gumball machine, or did he borrow money from the guy who owns his apartment, or what? "While I live, you'll never want for anything." Blech.

Isa asks Frankie the name of the company he's going to work for. Frankie says it's Nippon-Pacific Airlines, which has offices around the world (and yet, they insist on having him in their Tokyo office??).

(I Googled Nippon-Pacific Airlines, as well as Nippon-Pacific Airways, and the only thing I found was a small domestic airline.)

Isa remarks that it's very odd that such a company would hire a Mexican to handle their public relations. He claims that he's worked with them for three years and on top of a great salary, they're offering him a chauffeured car, apartment, and countless other perks.

Hmmm... he might be making it sound too good. If I were Sofie I would already be packing my bags. Sofie adds that with her monthly allowance from Rodrigo, they'll live very comfortably. Frankie poo-poos the idea of ever touching her money.

Isa reaches for her wineglass and knocks over Frankie's. No one notices her smirk as Frankie jumps up and the others exclaim in surprise. If this is a ruse to get him to leave the table, it doesn't work. Or maybe she just did it because his lies were making her nauseous.

Rod protests Sofie going so far away. Frankie says it's by far the juiciest offer he's gotten. Rod says his family knows people, maybe they can get him a PR job that's more local. If they got him an offer, would he take it? Frankie begins to answer reluctantly that he appreciates it, but...

Isa interrupts and suggests that Rod offer him a job at the company. "I don't think so," Rodrigo answers sharply. As Isa and Sofie stare at him, he softens and adds that he hasn't really thought about it, but maybe it's something he could consider. Isa pushes the idea on Frankie enthusiastically. Sofie questions why Isa's done nothing but interrogate Frankie all night and why she's taking such an interest in their plans. She warns they won't be manipulated by her. If Frankie wants to work in Japan, she'll support him.

Isa acts wounded and says she's just concerned because Sofie's like a sister to her. She excuses herself to go to the bathroom. Sofie apologizes to Frankie for Isa's behavior. Frankie answers that he understands that pregnant women are moody. "Isn't that right, Rodrigo?" "Yes, I think so," Rod laughs. Grrrrrrrr. Like Rod's not moody too??

Rod asks how long till he starts the new job. Frankie says the guy he's replacing will leave at the end of May. Sofie says this is great - they'll have a whole two months to plan the wedding!

These people are crazy, I tell you.

Frankie gets a call. It's Isa, but he pretends it's the airline guy. He excuses himself and leaves the table, saying in heavily accented English, "I'm listening, Mr. Fuyita-san."

Rod asks Sofie if she thinks Frankie will consider a comparable job offer with the Montalvos. She loves the idea and promises to try to convince him.

Frankie meets Isa upstairs near the restroom. She confronts him about the fake job offer. He plays innocent, gets offended, says he loves Sofia. She says the only things he loves are a credit card, a nice yacht, a sportscar, and all that...

Frankie threatens that if she doesn't stay away from them, he'll tell everyone about their trip to Acapulco. She's annoyed that he sees it this way. She's the person who can give him what he wants. But he doesn't want to talk this way and says she needs to leave him alone, that way everyone can avoid a big tragedy.

Rod wonders what's taking Isa so long. He gets up to go look for her. Alone, Sofie admires her ring and tells herself she hopes Frankie will take Rod's offer (which he hasn't made yet).

Isa says give me a year to split up with Rod. Wait for me, please wait for me. She touches Frankie's face, and just then, Rod comes up the stairs and sees them. He demands an explanation. Frankie says he was just forgiving Isa. He turns to her and says they're going to be a family now, of course she's worried about Sofia. Frankie tells Rodrigo he's got an exceptional woman, though maybe a little stubborn. He goes back to the table.

Rod's mad and asks what Isa was trying to do. Isa asks if he's jealous, but he insists on an answer. She says she ran into Frankie on her way out of the bathroom and apologized for what she'd said at the table. She asks if they can leave, because she doesn't feel well. "As you wish," he agrees coldly.

Back at the table, Frankie repeats to Sofia his version of what happened and adds that Isa was even a little bit affectionate with him AND that he felt badly for Rodrigo because he caught her putting her hand on Frankie's face. He hopes Rodrigo didn't misunderstand the situation.

Sofie gives him some cash so he can pay for dinner. He pretends to be embarrassed, but accepts the money. Rod and Isa come back and say they're going to leave. Isa prompts Rod to pay the bill, but Frankie insists on paying. Sofie thanks Isa for making nice with Frankie (ROFL) and apologizes for being rude to Isa. Isa apologizes to Sofie.

Yeah, everybody's sorry now. But not as sorry as they're gonna be.

Frankie observes that Rod hasn't said whether he accepts Frankie as one of the family. Is he jealous because he saw Isa being affectionate with him? He laughs. Rod stops scowling and welcomes Frankie to the family. They shake hands, and Isa stares at Frankie's smarm bracelet as it dangles under her nose.

Somewhere in Guadalajara

Aaron and Pam are visiting with Pamela's parents, Barbara and Gaspar. Barbara thanks them for coming to clear things up about their living situation. Aaron says he doesn't want them to misunderstand - soon he'll be legally free, and they'll set a wedding date. He invites his would-be in-laws to come visit in Miami at any time.

Barb seems enthusiastic, but Gaspar wants to talk to Aaron... alone. Pam and her mom take off to compare red hair dyes.

Gaspar lectures Aaron, Pam is their greatest treasure and they know what Aaron is like, especially with women. He'd better think carefully about this. If he disrespects her in any way he'll pay dearly.

Aaron assures Gaspar that he's serious about divorcing Minnie, and he's serious about his engagement to Pamela. Gaspar says again that if his daughter sheds a single tear over Aaron, Aaron's going to have to deal with him. Aaron simply salutes with his whiskey.

Montalveña 6-5000

Crispin and Carmelo, aka Shrek the bartender, talk about love. Shrek has bought a box of chocolates and some earrings for SanWanna. He tried to bring them to her, but he got so nervous he couldn't even knock on the door. He asks Crispin to complete the deed. Shrek is afraid he'll end up a lonely, miserable old widower.

At the home for wayward jimadoras

Gavi mopes about the love she thought she had, and how great it was going to be. Rod had enough of a conscience to feel badly about his family's tricks, but he just wanted to pay her off to keep her quiet. Clarita tries to be comforting, but Gaviota gets fired up all over again. "I'm going to show that I'm strong and I can live without him."

Later, Gavi is still moping and sulking. Clarita tries to get her to go to sleep, but Gavi reaches for a bottle and says she wants to get so "anesthetized" that she'll be able to poke herself in the eye. Clarita takes away her tequila. Crying, Gavi says she kept hoping that Rod would say that he still loved her, and that they could win back their love. "But now it's lost... wait, what am I saying? You can't lose something you've never had!"

Tequila: All-natural crying-fit enhancer

In their apartment, Isa begs Rod to convince Frankie to stay. He says that's for Sofie to do, but Isa's worried that Sofie will go too easy on Frankie because she's so in love with him. For some reason, Rodrigo doesn't seem suspicious about Isa's insistence.

Rodrigo reaches for a bottle. Isa's annoyed that he's going to continue drinking. He says he wants to be alone and asks her to leave him alone. "As you wish," she hisses. Hissing might be her super-power.

For the rest of the night, Rodrigo drinks in slow motion, pacing around the living room and drinking some more. He's crying... wait, maybe he's fighting off a sneeze. He pours another shot. Now he's sitting on the floor and crying for sure. Another shot. His face is red. He cries so well I find myself sniffling even though I know it's his own fault for marrying Isadora in the first place.

Next day

At the hacienda, Roman and Crispin catch up on recent events. Crispin says he has two gifts for SanWanna, on behalf of Carmelo, aka Shrek. Roman says she's gone to the orchards with Ines (who??) for some fruit and won't be back for three hours. Crispy can't wait that long, he's got to do some Tequila Academy stuff for Mr. James, so Roman agrees to take care of the gifts.

Crispy asks about Hilario. Roman nervously admits he hasn't heard from him.

In the city, an older man struggles on the sidewalk with big boxes full of books. Hilario offers to help. The man offers to pay Hilario to take the boxes into his bookstore; Hilario says he'd actually do it for free, but he doesn't have a penny and it's his mom's birthday and he'd like to make a long distance call.

Roman looks around the kitchen for a hiding place for the bag of gifts. He doesn't want Ofelia to find them. He hears her coming so he hurriedly (and may I say stupidly) shoves the plastic grocery bag into the oven. Ofelia is grumbling something about SanWanna. In a feeble attempt to keep Ofelia away from the oven, Roman offers to take her to a movie.

And now back to our sob story, already in progress

Gavi's at work. There's a fax for her boss. Susana asks about the "lunch" with her old boss. Like, did he give her her severance? Gavi says no and she hopes she never sees him again. Susana says it's too bad - she wouldn't have figured him for such a jerk.

Just as Gavi is rounding the corner to her office, Rod calls. He apologizes to Susana for ruining her lunch hour yesterday and says that Mariana Franco left some things behind at the office. The messenger is ready to take them to her place and needs an address. Instead of telling him to just deliver the things to the office here, Susy falls for his little trick and gives him the address. "Don't tell her anything," he asks Susana.

Granny Pilar calls Rod. He tells her he'll come by for a chat later and hangs up. Then Dani shows up. He tells her Gavi was very wounded and didn't believe him. She folded his check into an airplane and threw it at him. She was too proud to take his money, she's easily offended. But he's going to pay her back some other way.

Dani is disappointed that he didn't work things out with Gavi. He says it was almost at the point of doing something very crazy. Dani goads him, asking if he mentioned how his wife impregnated herself with his "rendered samples." He says Gavi was upset enough when he admitted he'd gone back to Isa, he didn't want to hurt her further. (Well, just wait till Gavi finds out some other way, I'm sure that won't result in even greater teeth-gnashing!)

Gavi's new boss explains the fax - they've burnt up the crops that were infested at the Rancho Las Maravillas and two others, but there's still a risk and they need to put out a warning to all the plantations. (This actor is a real scenery-chewer - it's fun to see someone get worked up over something besides amor!) Gavi suggests that they go directly to the jimadores as well, since they're the ones who are always in contact with the agaves, and they can tell whether the plants are sick.

The boss wonders how she knows so much about jimadores. She proudly says she was a jimadora herself. Is he shocked? No, he's over-the-moon thrilled (chomp chomp scenery) and very impressed - he thought only men were strong enough for that job! She happily informs him otherwise, explains that she learned from her mother, and there's nothing prettier than to be on the plains and working with the agaves.

Rod pays Clarita a visit at home. She apologizes for the lack of furniture and invites him to sit down on one of the remaining chairs. She explains that their stuff was repossessed. "And you know why," she scolds him. He blames his family for what happened, says Gavi didn't believe him, and asks Clarita to listen. She accuses him of never taking the blame for anything. (Go Clarita!) He says he never wanted to hurt them.

He admits that in some way he did cause all of this. It's too late to fix it now, but he needs to do something because he feels responsible. (That's big of him.) He tries to get Clarita to take the money Gavi refused. It's not a gift, it's money she earned. (That's what I'm saying! Take it already!) He begs her to take it. She takes the check and hides it under one of her saints.

She again invites him to sit down and offers him coffee. "It's the only thing we have," she tells him, really pouring on the pathos! He asks where the furniture was taken. She explains that they have some papers. Maybe Gavi will agree to take the check, take the afternoon off and they can go get the stuff. Rod doesn't approve of this idea - she's needed at her job. Instead, he'll take care of it. It'll be no problem for him.

He insists and asks to see the repo papers. "Okay... because you ask," Clarita says with a hint of mischief. She opens the nightstand drawer and takes out the papers. She weeps and says it's all listed on these pages - all the things they took - the living room, the dining room, even the "etrodomesticos" (she's never been able to say "electrodomesticos," i.e. home electronics). She is especially distraught about Doña Jose's TV. He explains that they can still get it all back if they go right now.

She runs into the bathroom to fix herself up. He looks around and wonders how Gavi can live in such misery. Um, rich boy, you don't get out much, do you? He spies Gavi's latest cassette in the drawer left half-open. He picks it up curiously and reads: "Songs for My Rodrigo." He smiles to himself.

The guys at the country bar are going to be THRILLED when he shows up with this.

Wednesday

Hilario calls Ofelia to sing Las Mañanitas poorly with a band.
Rodrigo demonstrates how to get your things back from the repo man without paying a bribe.

Good recap, I appreciate all the detail, since I missed some of the dialog.

I'm guessing Rod/Gavi are qualified to join an AA group. Although, the tequila doesn't seem to alter their already impaired minds and leaves no headaches, hang-overs, etc. So, maybe it's just good tequila advertising.

TWB is the ultimate control freak! She's trying to manipulate Froggie at the risk of Rod discovering their adventura.

Not mentioning the pregnancy is another notch on Rod's belt of stupidity...

Thank you for a great recap..

Hilario is my hero,as he's out there with obstacles that seem to confront him as he tries to find his way,but he's persistent and I love that..He'll find his way, without SanWanna, I hope..Could that baby of Issy's be his or the gigilo,Frankie?

The on/off Gavi/Rod will go on for quite sometime,as they attempt to sort out their dysfunctional lives..Rod stepped upto the plate last night with the check to help Gavi & Clarita, but will falling back in favor with Gavi work..?Probably not. A new suitor for Gavi would be great to really get Rodrigo going..

I love the way of the mentality of the Mexican men.i.e. married, expecting a baby,no intention of getting a divorce, but still holding on to another woman.Amazing..

We're in ther final chapters in Mexico..Does anyone know where we are here?

I've been reading the esmas.com summaries, and while they are six weeks ahead, it seems there are still a lot of problems to be resolved. I thought I was going to be bored with "the same ole cat 'n mouse" game, but I really liked these last two episodes. They have a lot of appeal to the lower income people who probably form the backbone of telenovela viewers in Mexico. First there was Gaviota's impassioned speech to Rod about how he was probably one of those who feels small without credit cards and wad of bills in his wallet, whereas she has gone hungry many times and knows no fear. Now there is Rod's journey to her little room, which forms such a contrast to his own environment, and next he will enter that world and make a difference. Up to now, only Gavi and Francisco have been given the gift of class mobility by the creators of this telenovela--the other characters have been trapped more or less in their own milieu with only cursory contact with those above or below them. Actually, if you think about it, this whole novela is about social class. Really enjoyed the excellent recap and looking forward to Rod's righteous repossession of the repossessed.

Thanks, Desti Cafe. I was sick last night, which probably blunted my sense of humor, but strangely enough it seemed to heighten my concentration. Go figure.

LFMB was also about class mobility, somewhat - perhaps it's a Gaitan thing.

Is the show really in Ultimos in Mexico already? I thought the show had been extended. How long was it supposed to be originally, because so far here it's only been just over four months. If they're six weeks ahead, that means they're coming up on six months. That doesn't seem very extended to me.

It doesn't seem like they are in "Ultimos" in Mexico. If you know the underlying story, it seems they have a ways to go there as well. Who knows, we may be seeing another Christmas in DF! :)

Julie^^^Excellent recap. The subheadings were helpful. I am just sorry that Sylvia and Melinama missed the ''rendered samples'' comment. I know they both would have enjoyed that one....I know that I did. Frankie can really bring the smarm , can't he ? What an accomplished con artist he is. Watching Isa squirm as he sweet talks and liplocks Sophie is enjoyable. I am looking forward to The Rod [channeling The Rock] as he deals with the repo guys. And Watch out AAron...Pammy's daddy has got his eye on you, Primo. I get the feeling that this is not an hombre you want to tick off. Daddy has the same look in his eye that my hubby had when boys started calling on our daughters. Thanks for the great recap, Julie. Hope that you are feeling better.

Oops. In Mexico, they are more like 8-9 weeks ahead. The ep we just saw was shown there on May 21. But, I repeat, there is still a lot of ground (and impactos) to cover!!!

I'm confused by Rodrigo's attitude about the repossession. I realize he's led a privileged life, but does he not understand the concept of paying for things? I hate that honest people's stuff sometimes has to be seized, but I understand why it has to happen... and while it's nice to see Rod working off some of his anger on Gavi's behalf, he really ought to just pay the debt and then go to a gym and find a punching bag.

Or did I miss some subtlety about the repo? I didn't watch it carefully when it happened, but it looked pretty much the way I understand these things to work.

My impression from the preview was that Rod was going to pay, and then beat the crap out of the men for being disrespectful to "the señora" (Clarita). I could be wrong.

I'm confused about Frankie buying the ring for Sofia when he didn't have rent money & no car..A job in Japon'? Please,he's a con man preying on vulnerable & an absolutely clueless women..I bet Frankie couldn't identify the continemt of Asia on a world map to even locate Japon'...

Did anyone notice Sofia slipping money to Froggie when Issy & Rod were not at the table..??? How humiliating is that..

I thought he had told Clarita earlier that it wasn't going to cost him anything, but maybe he was just saying that because Clarita is gullible and he knows Gavi doesn't want his charity.

Thanks Julie for very thorough recap! There was a lot of dialog and I just couldn't keep up with it, now you clarified it for me.
I liked Isa in this episode, with her hissing she reminded me of a snake that is ready to attack.
I wonder who is going to cook something in the oven with Swanna's gifts inside, it's definitely coming.
Does anybody have any idea what Clarita sticks to her and Gavi's temples? May be I need some of those too ( keep in mind for my next trip to Mexico).
Eve

Really an enjoyable recap, Julie! Don't know if I interpreted that repo statement right myself, but I felt Rod was referring to the amount of effort extended to assisting Clarita, i.e., it was not a bother for a "really busy gentleman," (there's a phrase: "costar trabajo" that is used to relay that sentiment)rather than referring literally to getting the stuff back without paying for it. ?8 > ))

If Isa could plan a day ahead, she would encourage the relocation to Japan, then she would really see Frankie dance.

Exportred--that ring looked like a $39.99 pearl ring from JCPenneys catalog. But Sofi saw it through tears of joy and the eyes of love. . .sigh. (what an easy mark.)

Export, I was also upset with that scene about the money for the dinner. I have always wondered about how these wealthy women let these con artists manipulate them into paying for everything. It seems IMO that the women are so emotionally needy when it comes to a loving and/or romantic relationship that they kid themselves into thinking they are "helping" a stray cat or "loaning" these guys all that cash which these guys say they will reimburse. We know it's garbage, but I suppose when they are psychologically so needy they become easy marks.

Both Isa and Sofia were emotionally deprived females and thus easy marks.

Wonderful, wonderful recap, thanks Julie. exported said "I love the way of the mentality of the Mexican men.i.e. married, expecting a baby,no intention of getting a divorce, but still holding on to another woman.Amazing.." I agree wholeheartedly. But any man, not just Mexican men can afford to maintain that attitude dealing with women like ourselves. We may criticize Rod but in the same breath say how "hawt" he is, how nice that smile is, and what a turn on those muscles are. Rod isn't my favorite character since he keeps me on the edge of my seat wondering what failed plan he's going to attempt next. But, when it comes to Aaron the "serial cheater" (love that description), he really turns me on. I think the difference is that we know that eventually Aaron is going to pay for his sins. On the other hand, unless this novela is muy differente, Rod will end up being rewarded for his stupidity and shortcomings.

jdavis2: How funny! Love that sentiment.......

==========
Just an FYI --
My Mexico viewer connections say they're 10 weeks ahead. I also read in Mexico's "tv notiblog" that "Pasión" starts Sept. 3rd I think. That works out from a Jan. 22 start date there to just over 7 months' worth. That means early to Mid-Nov. for the US I figure.

Is Pasion that thing with Fernando Colunga?

Thanks for that explanation of the "not costing" remark from Rodrigo... I really didn't want to think he was dumb enough to try to get the stuff back without paying the debt...

Yep, Fernando C as a pirate and Susanna Gonzalez as the love interest. --My daughter's fiance (he actually uses business Spanish daily) is waiting to jump in with both feet to the world of telenovelas with the rest of us this fall, just because it is about Pirates. ?; 0 )

In reference to Rod’s comment as he looks around Gavi’s apartment about her living in misery --- I guess he’s forgotten the shack he burned down on his own property where she and Clarita stayed. I wouldn’t call those digs high class.
I hope Gavi is instrumental in causing bankruptcy in the Montalvo corporation, and even more I hope Gramma Pilar ends up having to beg Elvis to take her in. She is so snotty that even speaking to him civilly seems to be more than she can handle. She just gazes off into the distance and gives him the cold shoulder. JudyG

If Montalvo Corp. goes bankrupt, it will be because RODRIGO practically mortgaged the place into oblivion to get his FIL out of jail.

If Gavi has to do something that hurts the plantation or the compnay, she still won't really be the cause of their woe - it'd be more like the final nail in the coffin Rodrigo built for them.

Pilar and Elvis - yeah, I've been wondering what it would take to get her to like him. She did seem to soften up just a tiny bit, momentarily, when he gave her that portrait a few weeks back... I'm sure he'll find a creative way to win over!

Great recaps, you don't miss a beat!
I'm wondering why granny or Sophie haven't asked to meet Frankie's distinguished family. What story would he come up with then?

Lulu

Julie - I loved that you googled the airline that "hired" Frankie!
Haha. Great recap.

Isa should recognize by now when Rod has "Gavi-itis" - he wants to be alone, and drinks all night. He really had a bad case last night, but recovered well in the a.m.

Hilario is so sweet and naive. I hope he finds true love with a wonderful young woman.

Perhaps Aaron's "bad" tequila will bring the Corp. to the edge of ruin, but Rod and Gavi will somehow save it. Gavi will go into the Montalvo agave fields to teach the jimadoras how to spot the infestation, save the crop, and Montalvo Corp. will survive.
Yay!

How is Frankie going to pull off his wedding without any of his family showing up? Oh, they'll miss the plane from Monte Carlo, the Costa del Sol, or wherever it is they "summer".

By the way, what's going on in Vegas with Rod's money that Isa's dad betting?!

Eve

Good question, Eve! Last week (Friday night?) it looked like he was winning... but gambling addicts typically don't quit while they're ahead. A win only encourages them to keep going longer.

I don't *think* he has access to any more of Rod's money - Rod's offer wasn't an open-ended deal. What this means is that if Ricardo incurs more debt, he'll either end up in jail again. If that happens, Rod may or may not be able (and/or willing) to bail him out again.

It's also possible that Ricardo might have to turn to a loan shark and end up getting whacked, or something.

Ricardo promised to get his textile business up and running to pay his debts. If he defaults on this promise (and he is on the merry road to doing so), then the Montalvo cosecha (everything produced on the hacienda) is forfeit, the Montalvo girls are penniless--that's why they're not thrilled with Isa right now-- and nothing will be left but the land itself, which cannot be used as collateral for any debt (thank you, Don Amador) Ricardo Duarte is one of several factors seriously undermining the House of Montalvo.

Oh, I see - so Rodrigo put up the crop as collateral, but Ricardo's supposed to come up with the money to pay the creditors? Oh boy, that's a lot scarier than what I had thought.

(I thought Rod was paying the creditors directly, and Ricardo owed the money to Rod, which admittedly isn't a lot better, but at least would keep Ricardo's irresponsibility private between the Duartes and the Montalvos.)

Weird, complicated financial arrangements also seem to be a hallmark of Fernando Gaitan's work. Interesting.

The only way Rod possibly could get out of that jam I am thinking would be to take over Ricardo's factory management himself and eek profits or to allow the creditors to take the factory if that would settle the debt in the end, but I believe it won't. If Ricardo loses more money he and Rod will both be up a creek unless the Corporation has enough liquidity to bail everybody or at least Rod out. Hopefully by then he'll be totally rid of his wife and won't feel further obligated.

Ah, but the Corporativo has liquidity problems and Aaron hasn't paid back that loan yet, has he? As I understand it, the plantation would take the direct hit from the creditors, not the Corporativo, although without the agave crop, the Corporativo would have to buy from others or go down soon.

May be all of this won't be that bad for Rod ( or may be even worse) because agave's crop ( the collateral) is under some kind of infection. And may be Gaviota with her experience as jimadora will save it. Hmm, would be very interesting.

About the stuff that Clarita had plastered to her temples...I remember in ''Amor Real'' the heroine Matilde and her mother and tia often stuck what appeared to be little leaves on their temples when they ''had the vapors'' and were feeling a little under the weather. I think it's supposed to be some type of stress or headache reliever. ...and let's face it...most of these folks should be walking around with that stuff on their temples...there's been mucho stress flying around. When I watched the previews of Rod's visit to the repo guys , lyrics were running through my head : ''My boyfriend's back and you're gonna be in trouble...cause he's kind of big and he's awful strong...hey la hey la..my boyfriend's back.'' I think Rod is taking his bad mood out on the repo fellows . Head for the hills.

Wasn't the meeting of Pammy,Aaron, her doctor father and mother a little odd. This is a married man sitting there jawjacking about a divorce from his wife, and papa is all ears. There will be no divorce between Aaron & Minnie..She knows too much..What Kool-Aid are they drinking? Are Pamela's parents so desperate to marry off their daughter to a Montalvo, they'll take a married one? Wow..

JC Penney ring on Sofia's hand? That's too funny..Is it customary in Mexico that a brother is asked for the hand of the sister when papa is not around? Wait until the Montalvos meet the friend of Clarita, who's the mother of Freddie, the freeloader from the wrong side of the track,so to speak..

jardinera654: My theory on the wealthy dating/marrying the not so wealthy, is that they are buying control or youth and generally both are aware and accept the trade-off.

Thanks for the excellent recap and all the comments. I'm rooting for Hilario to get a break from the big cold-hearted city. Loved his classic "country boy shafted by the mean city slickers" scene. Too dumb for Roman to put the gift in the oven.
All the over-the-top craziness in this show is too much fun. I'm another one wondering why the Montalvos haven't investigated Frankie a little bit. If he's from such a fine old family, they should know him or at least some relatives who could vouch for him, so que the hell?

You know, we don't know very much about Pammy's parents, except that he's another tequila manufacturer, but I bet he could turn into a real nightmare for Aaron. THAT would be a marvelous sight to behold, particularly if Gaspar were maybe like the Mexican version of guys who are always making offers that cannot be refused.....

Susanlynn:

Leave it to you to come up with the perfect lyrics of another song rocking and rolling in your head!// I was also thinking about Amor Real and those sticker things. You're so right! These characters should all be wearing them as permanent accessories like pierced earrings or something. Ha!/
=====
Desti - You're right, but I sort of figured that, even tho' it's a big leap of faith, that Aaron would actually pay back the loan like he said because he needs all those highly profitable doctored tequila shipments sent out and Rod did seem to be playing hardball this time around. "Course if he's got his head on backwards again because of Gavi, anything could happen......

Alice says:
Ther is so much going on in this
telenovela and so many little sub-plots that could go anywhere. I love it!!!
We won't see another one as good as this that keeps your interest for a long time.
Unless---
I may have to eat my words when "Pasion" comes on and we see
Fernando Colunga again. Swoon.

Thanks for the recap..hee hee hee..our cable froze last night during the commercial when Rod spotted Isa/Frankie & came back with him doing his Garbo & vanting to drink alone...
Glad to know Rod remained as dim as ever...
It is most common in TeleNOvelas for the hero to live in luxury while suffering for his beloved, usually including a wife or girlfriend he has accquired along the way, pestering him for sex, while the heroine suffers great set backs, humilation and misery in general..yet suceeds do to the fact that she is a much better person than the skank he married...The guy only suffers thru his lose of his true love, never the lose of a car, home or 3 squares a day..Yeah it sucks

Also I think this has been uber extended in Mexico..cause this is just the six month point or so in Mexico...so it is not near the end

What's up with the class warfare in these telenovelas? I've only seen a few and like Beckster said, they have a common theme. Is that reflective or how things are, how they want them to be, or what???

After lots of manipulations by Frankie on TWB, I hope it turns out to be Hilario's baby and TWB is deemed incompetent...

I think something happens and the baby needs a transfusion and they find that rod is not daddy and THEN the other three men come forward and try to claim the child ROTF

Well, we know where that engagement ring came from: it was a family heirloom alright, just not HIS family's..... =/8 > /

Thanks for the wonderfully detailed recap, Julie. I lost my original TV remote and the cable remote doesn't work the CC, so I have to struggle through by just listening. Needless to say, all the detail is very helpful!

My thought about the ring Frankie gave Sofia was that maybe it's a family heirloom he "borrowed" from his mother without her knowledge.

As a complete outsider, it seems to me that it's very likely there is a class war in Mexico, with the haves and have-nots being at such drastic ends of the spectrum. And I think as viewers, maybe we're drawn to the strong (rich) men and spunky (poor) women much more than we would if the roles were reversed. Or maybe I've had too much tequila......

Hey, I didn't see your post about the ring before I posted mine, Jardinera. I wondered if I was off in left field on that one, but I guess not!

Yep...these reflect society..except good poor girls do not marry rich boys...

But just think do you really think in this country a migrant tobacco picker could marry into a family on Martha's Vinyard...Not likely..but it is pretty to think so isn't it?

Beckster^^^I am new to the telenovela universe and have only watched a few. I used your formula on my two favs , and it fit them both. In ''Amor Real'', Manuel , the rich hacienda owner throws out his wife because he thinks she cheated on him . [He was the poor bastard son who becvame rich when his father died with no other heirs.]Matilde , his wife, was from an upper class family who had lost their fortune. After he threw her out, he went on a bender and groveled in his misery until the nasty housekeeper Antonia climbed into his bathtub. Matilde , on the other hand, was pregnant and penniless and back with her equally penniless mother and tia. Likewise, in ''Alborada'', Luis , the wealthy aristocrat, pursued the poor, married Hippolita who spent the entire telenovela moving from one bad situation into another looking for a place to raise her son. While all this was going on , Luis managed to impregnate her...twice. Yes, Beckster, I see the pattern : rich man, poor woman.

Hi! Wow this soap opera kicks butt. Except I'm confused... how is Rod physically capable of being the dad? Did he have a breakthrough at some point that I missed? Or is that what the transfusion was all about?

Alice^^^Isa talked Rod into making a donation for artificial insemination a while back when she caught him in a generous mood. However, Isa was NOT artificially inseminated...she was inseminated in the oldfashioned way . She lied to Rod and convinced the doctor to lie for her. There are 3 possible candidates for the real baby daddy : behind Door #1 ~~ Hilario Door #2~~ AAron Door #3 ~~Frankie , who seems to be the candidate most people here think is the baby daddy.

P.S. Do you remember how those of us who watched ''Duelo'' said that if Thelma's baby popped out wearing overalls and Boondockers , Gaspar would quite obviously be recognized as the father ??? Well, if Isa's baby pops out wearing a pinky ring and asking what your sign is in bad French...he/she is obviously from Frankie's gene pool.

Our little sluth Dani along with her sidekick Elvis will uncover all Issy's bed partners and the "bebe's papa,I feel...She has plenty of free time to devote to this mission..She is no dummy.

Yes, when will Rod get around to mentioning the pregnancy? I don't think he will until he's confronted face to face by Gavi..Sometimes,our Rodrigo uses his head only for a hat rack..

...and considering Rodrigo never actually wears a hat, the head's strictly ornamental most of the time...

Did someone bring up the irony that is Pilar? She is totally hoodwinked by Mariana Franco and that supposedly "fine, honorable" family name of Franco, and now she is snowed by Frankie all over again. "Insanity" is supposedly doing the same stupid, dangerous thing incessantly. You'd think if these wealthy social snobs were truly worried about grifter types marrying into the family, that the old lady or somebody would actually hire a detective to check out this dude. "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me!" --Could be in a society of double-standards they only ever suspect a woman of gold-digging.

Mexico has very little middle class unlike in the U.S. It has the super-rich and the very poor.

An upper-class rich guy would not look twice at nor fall in love with a poor girl. He would only look to get into her pants. For marriage he would choose someone of his own class.

Pilar not only looks down on Elvis because he is not upper class, she also looks down on him because he's black. She is so rude to him she deserves to be taken by the gigolo.

If Mexico is anything like Colombia there is a struggling professional class. As a matter of fact, when I taught in Texas about 10 years ago, I met many of them--people with college degrees who couldn't get jobs and were happy to accept a beginning teachers salary even if they had degrees in engineering. My favorite fellow teachers were from Monterrey--they were just so energetic and entrepreneurial.

BTW, if nobody is going to recap last night's episode can somebody who is authorized to post to this blog throw up a header for it and invite comments? I'd love to talk about Acacia and the cell phone from hell : )

Someone brought up the class factor of the two Mexico,so to speak--the "haves & the have not"..Did anyone notice last night when Elvis was on the sofa sharing pictures of his family..??Well,he was trying to share them with Pilar and Sofia, but Pilar's nose was stuck so high in the air that had it rained, she would have drowned..What a work of art is she..Pompus ass to the core..She can't come off that high horse fast enough..

Dest. Cafe..You can talk about Acacia..Our recapper may not be able to recap today,so go for it..

ExportRed, you are too funny! That last comment about Pilar drowning had it rained because of her nose being stuck so high in the air is the best. She always looks like she's sitting on a cactus patch.

Well, after the cell phone set her off, Acacia goes BSC again, and runs out of the kitchen, leaving a perfectly good lunch go to ruin. After a time, James--frustrated at not being able to tell her he's going to investigate some blight somewhere and won't be home for that lunch--shows up and finds her in the barn. What is she sitting next to? Is Meliton buried in there? (I did not see the episode where she killed him, but I understand it took place in the barn.)

I usually love Destilando because of all the craziness, but I must say last night had several warm fuzzies for me. I loved Rod with Clarita! Although I was a little distracted by the continuing versatility of his hair (one moment it’s full poof, then sleek, then half-poof) I though they were very sweet together. (Ok, there was the whole slugfest with the repo-men, but even then he was putting out his arm to get Clarita out of harm’s way).

As I’ve mentioned, although I’m not a big fan of Gavi’s I had to smile at her reaction to Clarita telling her how Rod felt about her. I also loved Elvis and his photo album. Pilar must truly be an ice-encased mummy to not be touched by his sweet spirit. And then finally, I always love Roman and Ofelia.

But Acacia can always be counted on to bring us back to crazy town.

I loved Elvis and his photo album too, because it showed a side of Mexican culture that is really seen--the existence in Veracruz of a population more like the Afro-Cubans or the Panamanians. The character's genuine affection for the people in the album stand in sharp contrast to faker Frankie who is going to diss his long suffering real mom and hire rent-a-parents to meet the Montalvos.

Dest. Cafe. The catus patch & rent-a- parents is quite funny as well..It's good to start a Friday laughing..We have the most articulate, funny recappers & commentators here,I look forward to reading all...

The one thing I would find to spice things up is the gossip of the stars personal lives, but our lady of the manor will not allow..I know about that,as I said something one time and others have to,and it was immediately deleted..Understandable on the guidelines..

Just speculating here, but does anyone think Acacia will not meet a tragic demise,as I feel Sofia will end up back with James, once that dirt sandwich,Frankie is uncovered later on in our show? I feel a tragic end for Isadora as well..It's a thought, but never having seen the original Destilando Amor, wouldn't have a clue..

Can you recommend a website that has info on the stars personal lives?

Just wondering, since I wasn't able to record the last few days--Why do they blame the repo guys for taking away their furniture? Rod even gets into a fight with them and Clarita is over the top with how bad they are. Aren't they in the business to repossess items that don't belong to people because they weren't paid for?

I'm a citygirl, so I don't know anything about farming, country living, etc. But, I noticed and thought it odd, that a big pile of rocks was in the barn. (I know it's Meliton.) Just saying, James didn't even bat an eye...

I believe Telenovela World gives insight(or gossip, whichever you choose to believe or not) private lives of our regulars, but so does YouTube..If you want me to share with you what I've seen on various sites, please email me at business email address: MHINTLFREIGHT@YAHOO.COM

Agree on the repo guys..Where does the sense of entitlement come from? We have it here in USA,but rampant in Mexico,it seems..When ones purchases or leases, you must pay for it..It's called a debt and obligation to do what is right.?

Regards,Maureen

I don't know if you here found Lucy's recap for Wed. night, but I'll clarify the reason for the fight at the repo warehouse there.
=======
Just and FYI for future Recaps:

I think it was hard to find her recap because, as I've found out, the draft function locks in your recap and you cannot post it normally afterwards unless you copy and paste like a regular newly created recap post.

Since the repo/payback part of my recap is still causing confusion (and I admit I got it wrong), I'll go back and make a minor adjustment. Rod did NOT say they weren't going to pay the repo debt... he paid the full debt and always intended to. The next night's fight was because the repo lawyer demanded a bribe, and Rod was offended by the way Clarita was being treated.

did anyone notice that there are more comments on Destilando then la fea and la fea was muy popular.

NO...La Fea reached much higher numbers of comments at times, though this is close
