Destilando Amor - Oct. 4, 2007 Rod starts therapy; Sofia gets an attitude check; Gavi rethinks her life; and Aaron still plays with snakes

EPISODE Oct. 4, 2007:
(for those who are reading along on the esmas.com official site, the corresponding summary is for 24 julio 2007)

* After touring the Tequila commission offices and labs, Gavi, Clara, Alonso and guests have lunch and watch the mexican folk dance show.

* Rod meets with Erika at restaurant.

* Isa calls Pancho to ask him to continue to see her. Pancho tells her he can't, Sofia is suspicious so he better stay away for awhile. Isa continues to tease, taunt and pressure Pancho.

* Rod and Erika order drinks. He's nervous and rambles. She makes a joke of having a tranquilizer gun in her purse. They laugh. She then assures him of her qualifications; she explains how Dani convinced her to meet with him here. he asks how to address her - she says however he feels comfortable - he rambles off suggestions - she tells him to call her Erika. He smiles and agrees.

* Pancho agrees reluctantly with Isa and hangs up. He is impactado when he turns and sees Sofia standing there hovering and scowling at him. He tries to change the subject and leave - she confronts him about the phone call with his "lover".

* Rod and Erika start to talk - about her analysis and when the session started - Rod continues to ramble and mumble with nervous energy. He asks her how long sessions last - she says 35 minutes more or less, depending on the client. He asks when he is to meet with her again. She says to make an appointment with her secretary at the office. He hesitates - no good for him. She tries to assure and convince him. Waiter comes over to take their orders - Rod continues to ramble with the waiter. Erika smiles and listens.

* Sofia tries to scold Pancho and get the truth - Pancho turns it around and scolds her for listening in on a private phone conversation and hovering over him like she doesn't trust him. He is insulted and forces her to take his cell phone to check for herself, since she doesn't trust him. He leaves - Sofia cries in anguish.

* Gavi sits alone and thinks. Alonso finds her and asks if she will join them for dinner. She says no, she's not hungry. Alonso sits with her - she rattles off about her childhood memories of life among the agave fields and in town, and her dreams. Alonso is fascinated. He asks why she didn't sign the Montalvo book. She explains that it's complicated. Alonso gives his opinion and the positive comments she's received from the guests. Gavi says that she doesn't want to rely on a man for anything, she wants to earn her own money and support herself and her mom, she loves to work. He talks with her about her possible transfer to a position in Europe, when the time is right.

* Rod opens up to Erika that he's married with one son. Then he starts to ramble off about his tequila business. She listens intently and gets him to explain all the intricate details about the tequila-making process. As he finishes the lecture, she says "time's up". He's disappointed and asks her to stay. She explains her rules and says that she'll see him at the office tomorrow at 12 p.m. She leaves. He grumbles about the appointment at her office and calls for the check.

* Gavi returns to her room. Clara brings her some dessert. Gavi isn't interested - she starts to vent her hostility towards Rod and vows to do all she can to make sure he stays away from her this time, starting tonight. Clara tries to calm her down and give advice to not make any rash decisions in anger. Gavi is furious and determined to leave tonight. Clara tells Gavi they will discuss the future plans in the morning. Gavi is still determined and goes to start packing. Clara stomps her foot and tells Gavi to stop - she has to stay because of Alonso and the businessmen.

* Alonso meets with the men in the lobby, explains that Gavi and Clara won't be joining them this evening. The men are SO disappointed. Gavi and Clara appear and they all start to smile and cheer, especially Alonso.

* At breakfast at the hacienda, James talks with Sofia and Pancho about Rod's change in administration duties. Rod has put James in charge of all the fields and crops. Pancho is insulted with the surprise demotion in duties. He vents his outrage and stomps off (like a little brat having a temper-tantrum). James apologizes to Sofia - Sofia tries to make an excuse, then changes the subject to Rod. Dani told her about his problem with Gavi. She feels guilty for siding with Isa and Minnie against him. James and Sofia discuss Rod and how rude and undermining Aaron was on the business trip. James thinks they should change the subject. Sofia brings up her mistrust of Gavi - James scolds Sofia for never meeting Gavi herself and instead relying on the opinions of Aaron, Minnie and Isa. James tries to convince Sofia to just meet with Gavi and form her own opinions.

* Rod returns to the condo. He makes small talk with Isa - about Ricky, his business trip. Rod takes an inventory of his wine collection and notices that his bottle of Bordello is missing and asks Isa about it. Isa stumbles and makes the excuse that the ladies must've drank it the other night and apologizes. Rod half-accepts the excuse. Isa leaves. Rod goes to his coat and pulls out a piece of paper - he unfolds it and reads it. He wonders where Gavi is right now, in her room or at the bar, and whether she's with Alonso. He laughs at himself for the jealous thoughts.

* Gavi is with the group, making a toast with tequila.

* James explains to Sofia how much respect Gavi had for the family while she was at the house with the tour group. Sofia questions about the mariachi band and the party - James explains to her that it was Gavi's birthday. James tells her how insulting she's been towards Rod; and how rude and awful Aaron has been. Sofia asks about Gavi and Alonso. James says that from what he knows, there's nothing there but a good working relationship. They discuss Rod and how hurt he is. James leaves Sofia alone.

* Rod calls the phone number on the paper. As he starts to leave a message, he hangs-up. He can't do that, he can't continue to bother Gavi. He rips up the paper.

* Dani and Erika talk on the phone about the restaurant session with Rod and when the next session will be. Elvis enters the office and asks Dani if she's talking with Alonso. Dani quickly gets off the phone with Erika. Elvis continues with his jealousy of her and Alonso. Dani assures Elvis that he is the only man for her - he's worried that his nightmare is a premonition like his mama Dolores periodically has. Dani gives Elvis a hug.

* Rod comes to the office. Margarita tells him that Clara decided to join Gavi and the tour group instead of returning to the city. Rod nods and goes into his office. Inside, alone, he laughs and is excited. Aaron enters. Rod informs his cousin that despite his efforts to undermine the sales trip, it was a smashing success. Aaron gets a parting dig at Rod before leaving the office. Rod grumbles and throws something at the door as it closes.

* Casandra is talking to SW on the phone. SW is in panic mode because Hilario didn't return to the apartment all night. Casandra agrees to look for Hilario. As soon as Casandra hangs up and starts to look through her rolodex for Hilario's phone numbers, Hilario appears. She scolds him for worrying SW to death, and her also. Hilario explains why he can't return to the apartment - and about SW, the leach, the stubborn donkey, she doesn't respect him or his friends and won't leave. Casandra listens and agrees to help him out - she comes up with a new campaign to send him on (for a new perfume). Hilario smiles and accepts the work.

* Minnie tells Fedra and Isa the latest gossip from Aaron about Rod and Gavi and the new tequila. Fedra grumbles.

* Aaron meets with Larry the snake - about a new plan to get money out of the corporation without Rod or Bruno or anyone else knowing.

When I have to miss these on Thursday nights, I'm so glad to have your recaps to refer to, JR. One question though - who's Dona Gertrudis?

Thanks for the very nice recap J.R. I'm also wondering who Dona Gertrudis. I'm kinda dissappointed with the "leeway" that Erika is giving Rod. It's like she's letting him call the shots. She's appearing more seductive than firm and professional. But I guess it's the little things like that which distinguishes novela life from real life. The escape from reality is probably one of the reasons it's so easy to get addicted. In any case, it sure makes for some interesting comments and observations.

I was wondering about the Doctora's approach to Rod. Anyone out there with some professional input on this? She did get him to come to the office like a regular person would...
jb

Well, when Dr. E met with Gavi at the request of their mutual Italian restauranteur friend from France, it was at a vacation resort. So I guess Dr. E is amenable to meeting with people just about anywhere as long as she gets paid. :-)

It's unorthodox, but on the other hand, it's not as though anyone's worried that Rodrigo is going to try to seduce her. Or vice versa. It'd be unethical on her part. If they ever decide they want to try dating, she has to insist that he find another therapist first.

Terrif recap.

During Frankie's ranting, he actually threatens to kill any employee who has had the temerity (read huevos) to short change the agave... because the one thinkg he cannot stand is an estafador. "Pot? Kettle here." Forget the anvil, this is one of those Acme bombs, fuse lit...

As an aside, my money is on San Juana. Hilario for all the buff and stuff is just a sweet ranchero boy.
VV.

I too was a little taken back with the doctor's approach with Rod....at first. And that was only because the restaurant did seem a little romantic in it's setting but that was the nature of the restaurant itself and not the mood that was generated by anything the doctor said or did. What she did was perfectly ethical. She met him for the first time in a neutral environment where she laid out to him what the treatment procedures will be from then on (meeting in her office, set appointment with her secretary etc) and when the time of this first "session" was up she got up and left in a very professional manner. She did not probe too much but rather just let him do the talking while she listen and observe.
Sometimes (very rarely) as a therapist (yes I'm one) you will meet with your clients outside your office depending on what the situation is and how it will help the client to progress with their treatment plan....the main thing is that those meetings will always (I know never say "always" or "never") take place in a neutral and public environment that will eliminate any feeling of threat for the client (as well as the doctor of course).

So for now it all seem to be on the up and up......BUT this is novelaland so who knows where it could go :-)

The only shrink I ever saw in action was Tony Sopranos..she fell into the ? category. They gave the therapy a name (she and another shrink), right before she decided to dump Tony in the end. Anyway I kind of had to agree with Tony, some of the therapy just goes on and on and on..endlessly for years and the patient doesn't seem better. Which I guess, is just what happens. I don't know maybe therapy like showing him pictures of Gavi and then electrical shocks would work.

Dr. Phil (hee hee hee), goes and meets with people one to one with a tv crew and makeup people.

Isn't the deal that they are supposed to help people, so if a person was in a crisis type thing..I think it would okay to meet them in a neutral setting, to feel them out and gain their trust. I mean right know there is a lot of Rod hate going around cause he has been a bit overbearing..(Remember Rod, I'm not on that train, cause while I have found many, oh hell most of your decisions stupid..you were spot-on when it came to Blondie)..but the doctor has to form the relationship with the patient.

Que the Hell...just do a Freud only in this case "Tell me about your Grandmother"

Thanks, J.r. Something was wrong with the transmission of the Univision channel last night, so I only saw about 5 minutes of this episode.

Re therapy. I took am a therapist and have not known any therapists/doctors/Psy.D's, etc. meet a potential client at a restaurant to determine if the person needs therapy. Also, in my experience a 40-year-old person would be making his own phone calls. Someone can call regarding their concern; however, is more likely that the therapist would let the caller know that the troubled person must want the help and to make his.her own phone call for help. Yes, therapists sometimes during the course of treatment, will take the hour outside the setting, depending on the client's needs (ie. If client has a fear of elevators, they may take a trip to a place that has one in order to take a cognitive/behavior approach to helping the client to overcome this fear. Or a fear of the malls, so they take the trip; however, not to meet in a formal restaurant to determine if one needs therapy. Also, if they decided to get together in a romantic fashion, telling the client they will have to switch therapists first is not sufficient in the ethical codes and malpractice would be easy to prove. there must be a few years between sessions and discharge from sessions with that therapist. Even then it is discouraged. Anyone interested in watching a movie about this, watch "Mr Jones" with Richard Greer. He has bipolar disorder and falls in love with his psychiatrist. She had to give it "all" up.

When Rod asked for the check in the restaurant. The waiter told him something and he smiled very happily. I wish you could give us a little more dialogue. I thought maybe the shrink paid for their dinner or drinks
I too would like to know who was Gertudis and what did she predict?

Oh dear after last night's episode I'm off to the doctor to be fitted with a neck brace due to whip lash from Rod's behavior. The previous day he goes into a rage in the fields screaming he hates Gavi and is done with her forever, last night he makes a sneaky call to the hotel to talk to her, before chickening out. If ever someone needed mental help it is him.

As for our lady doctor, she was appropriately dressed, no low cut number, and dealt with him calmly and merciful God we were spared endless "I'm a professional" speeches like those in Duelo ;-)

I was surprised with the James and Sofia's chat. I came in late to Destilando and wasn't aware that Sofia had never actually met or talked to Gavi. I thought she must have had some reason to have jumped on the hate Gavi train.

I remember a scene between Sofia and Isadora in the car where Isa asks Sofia what she thinks of Gavi, and Sofia replies, "Me cae bien." (She's OK). As for the restaurant scene, Rod asks for the check and the mesero reports that it had been settled for in advance, by Dra. Robledo, who is a regular customer of theirs. Rod, who had been musing "que fraude" was surprised, and, I think, favorabley impressed.

Sofia had a great reason to jump on the Gavi-Hate Train. It would be much more obvious if she was maybe 12 years old. She didn't have any friends, and then these mean girls came along and acted friendly to her, so she went along with whatever they said so that they'd let her sit at the lunch table with them.

I think Sofia and the other women first laid eyes on "Mariana Franco" at the presentation for Aaron's Turquoise Tequila. So technically, they've met, but they've never had any sort of personal conversation. So it's equally true that they've "met" and they don't know one another.

Sofie knew Rod had hots for a Jimadora..this of course did not work with Sofie's idea of class, she had no idea MariAnne was the same person until the minnie/isa exposure...

Really this all goes back to the Will, sofie probably could have cared less who Rod popped a kid out with, but due to time constraints, her best bet was Isa, Sofie was the one who told her to go behind Rod's back & use the stored sample of jizz.

For those of you..slamming Rod, hey how many times did you ever tell someone you hated them..never wanted to see them again..so on so forth..only to call or "accidently run into them again"?

Yes, thank heavens Dr. Erika is not constantly telling everyone , ''I'm a professional.'' Que???? Dr. Loca from ''Duelo'' certainly talked the talk while not walking the walk. She kept saying that she was a professional while getting in liplocks with Don Loco. Que the hell ??? Dr. Erika seems to be filling the role of HotBabeLawyer [another professional] in ''Heridas.'' She started out a very

professional legal eagle but eventually drove Miranda crazy as she ''counseled '' What's-his- name played by Guy Ecker in a more romantic fashion. If you are a professional, you have to draw a line in the sand. As a high school teacher, I was only 4 years older than the seniors...a few of whom played Legion baseball with my novio. I witnessed some men teachers putting the moves on female students. One of my friends eventually married a former student. This is very tricky business. Sometimes teachers can get very caught up in their students' problems and lives . When students tell you that they would date you, the correct answer is , ''Well, I won't date you because I'm YOUR TEACHER....or in telenovela jargon ''a professional.'' However, higher level degrees do not automatically give people commom sense and ethics. Let's see what unfolds with Dr. Erika and Rodrigoooo.

First impression are lasting impressions and more importantly when making a doc has to make a first impression w/ a patient. In the first 7 seconds of doc/patient contact a pro doc has developed some impression re: the patient and vice versa. Once the dynamics are set it will take work/time to correct. An attractive female doc knows that her male patient may be attracted to her and has to immediately set the tone so that these dynamics don't get into the way of their professional relationship. An attractive doctor meeting her new male patient in an upscale restaurant that she regularly goes to in REAL WORLD would be a BIG NO NO for the following reasons: Most times when men and women meet for the first time in a restaurant is when the two have been set up on a date, ya think that that might tap into the imagination of your male patient for a second or two (Rod was suited up for the occassional, he did not come in sweats or jeans, she did hide behind the BIG MENU for the big reveal, yes ROD I am a babe Doc) I only saw the promo's, but was he a little flustered after the reveal or did he sulk?
Also this is a potential psyche patient, would you give him the address to your favorite restaurant? NOT! Female ethical DOCs try not to do anything that would send out confusing messages to AVOID any misconceptions /problems/stalking. They do whatever it takes so everybody can stay focused. I know this out from experience.

Dr. Sistah VAL

Maybe..like real life..The very Wealthy connected people are treated differently...than let's say Acacia having a BSC meltdown at the ranch..

Cause somehow I feel if one of the famous old families in our country had a meltdown, they wouldn't be sitting in a waiting room reading Reader's digest

Also, given Rodrigo's history, I can see why Dani and everyone else wouldn't be worried about him developing a crush on... well... anyone. :-)

(Which of course would make it that much more interesting if he gets a crush on his therapist, of all people!)

Great recap. That episode seemed to have more than the usual amount of words and phrases that I didn't understand. Especially the scenes of Sophie, first with Frankie and then James. Thanks for clarifying those. Now for my 2 cents about the Doctor and Rod. For some reason I think the writers purposely giving the impression of attraction. Did you notice the way Rod smiled back at her. Who'd be in the mood to discuss problems after that? As far as her leaving in a professional manner, you could hear her high heels clicking for what seemed like a full 2 minutes. What other purpose would that serve other than to reinforce the image of a beautiful, sexy shrink. (Enough to make a man feign mental illness). Meeting someone who you haven't evaluated in a neutral, well lit place might be OK but still risky (just hope that they don't have a knife or a gun). Having alcoholic beverages with a patient you're meeting for the first time isn't too cool. Florida, the law says that it is unethical for you to have an intimate relationship with anyone you have treated for 5 years. Although I know that Rod and the Dr most likely will not have a romantic relationship, I think the writers have every intention of making it appear that way on the surface. That'll give Gavi the same opportunity to get jealous just as Rod is jealous of Gavi and Dr Blondie. We'll see.

I love your recap and also the comments. They all have some truth. Yes, this is therapy novela style. In the real world a therapist would set themselves up for a lawsuit if they discussed your situation with anyone, including a family member. Also, I'm thinking about patient privacy. If a shrink has an account at a certain place, everytime when someone saw you there with her/him, wouldn't that let other patrons know that you were seeing a shrink?
Beckster you are so right about the rich and famous being treated differently. What about the guy who sued that hospital because they treated Michael Jackson right away and the man had been waiting a long time. Here in my neck of the woods, there is no emergency great enough to bypass filling out the insurance papers.

In *my* neck of the woods, so many people go to some kind of mental health care worker that there are long waiting lists. It's no more uncommon or embarrassing than letting people know you go to a dentist or a gynecologist. It's more surprising when someone DOESN'T go.

I realize it might be different in other places.... but perhaps not among the wealthy. Except it probably violates that whole macho thing. OTOH, even if people at that restaurant know Dr. E is a therapist (I can't remember if she's a psychiatrist, psychologist, etc.), they don't necessarily know that she isn't on a date on this occasion. :-)

Uh, just to clarify, it's not actually EMBARRASSING if you don't go to a psychiatrist. We're not THAT crazy in these here parts. ;-) I'm just saying it's commonplace and no one thinks anything of it.

Julie. I am a therapist and I have learned that it is prestigous to "have your own therapist". My clients say, "and when I saw my therapist and told her this......" It's as if it is a status symbol.

Therapist in PA However, this whole thing in Destilando would make the Ethics code turn over in its' grave ROTF. Especially the previews for Monday. Oh My GOD.

LOL, I'm grateful that most people I know are discreet enough not to share the contents of their therapy sessions with everyone at lunch. :-)

I'm also amazed that a therapist who looks just like Paty Manterola always has time to meet with new clients at the drop of a hat.

Lastly, I would like to recommend some family therapy for the Montalvos. I figure if Dr. Erika survives that ordeal, she'll be eligible for a Nobel prize.

In many societies a macho man would never, ever admit to going to a therapist. Its not regarded as a status symbol but a sign of extreme weakness.

So will therapy help Rod ??? Robert Palmer keeps singing in my head , ''Might as well face it you're addicted to love .'' Wouldn't it be interesting if in real life all men were likewise addicted to one and only one mujer and the machinery operated for just that one person????

Yes,It's quite amazing that Erika, the shrink, can drop everything to listen to Rod's "sob story",being discussed at the local eatery..Re-living the days of Londres, the accident, the pregnancy, and his lame reason for marrying TWB(Isadora),would make one want yell taxi please and get the hell out of there..

Erika interest has definitely nothing to do with therapy..Her subtle seductive approach is a pretense to "bed down Rodrigo, but he'll be totally clueless to her advances, subtle or otherwise..He wrote the book on naive..Did he not mingle with the opposite sex in all his years at Cambridge..? Just "hittin" the books,I suppose..

Erika is the urbane, refined, perfect match for Dr. Cafe, but, alas, that would be much too neat a resolution.

I guess we should all be lucky I'm not playing the character of Rod.

One look at the doctor and I'd be saying, "who was I talking about?"
