Synopsis, in English, of Pasión (the plot in brief)

As senior recapper I'm taking "first-night rights" since Jardinera can't - she says the show is starting December 3 - and I'm also presenting your Esmas sinopsis, translated, below.

FYI: At the Esmas Pasion site I found this ridiculous flashscreen of our heroine rising out of a clamshell like Dorothy Lamour wearing a strategically abbreviated satin evening gown.

Romantic and ruthless colonial Mexico is the framework of this passionate love story, burning like the Caribbean sun. In the small settlement of San Fernando they are celebrating the engagement of Camila (Susana González), daughter of Don Justo Darién, and Santiago (Sebastián Rulli), the village's handsome blacksmith. The festival is interrupted by henchmen of Don Jorge Mancera y Ruiz (Juan Ferrera), the tyrannical owner of the encomienda, who has decided to cash in on his "first-night rights"

Ah, it starts already!
  • Encomienda from Enclopedia.com: "A system of tributory labor established in Spanish America. Developed as a means of securing an adequate and cheap labor supply, the encomienda was first used over the conquered Moors of Spain. Transplanted to the New World, it gave the conquistador control over the native populations by requiring them to pay tribute from their lands, which were "granted" to deserving subjects of the Spanish crown. The natives often rendered personal services as well. In return the grantee was theoretically obligated to protect his wards, to instruct them in the Christian faith, and to defend their right to use the land for their own subsistence. When first applied in the West Indies, this labor system wrought such hardship that the population was soon decimated."

I guess we could call him a big Mafia-type taxman. When my daughter and I were visiting Koprivchitsa in Bulgaria this summer we visited ancient houses. The fanciest one of all belonged to the taxman.

  • In English we usually use the French "droit de seigneur" since we usually don't do this in English-speaking countries: "A feudal right which allows the boss to have sexual relations with any woman serving in his area who has just married one of his other servants.".

Santiago falls wounded when he tries to keep them from taking Camila away, and she agrees to go with the thugs in exchange for their not killing him. At Don Jorge's house, Camila realizes the man is so drunk that he's fallen asleep without touching her, and she escapes; when she gets to the village they tell her Santiago's condition is very grave and, further, she is forced (by Don Jorge's prideful threats) to keep up the charade that he had possessed her.

A few days later, she is kidnaped by some filibusteros (17th century pirates found in the waters around the Antilles). The captain of the pirate ship, a man known as "El Antillano" (Fernando Colunga), is attracted by her and for a moment has the impulse to protect her from her cruel destiny, but the moment passes and the girl is sold on the Island of La Mariana to Don Timoteo de Salamanca and Almonte (Germán Robles), a bitter old geezer who despises his family and has a Machiavellian plan to leave them in ruin: he will marry his slave and leave her all his money.

[HAH HAH! already this plot is as ridiculous as one could wish for!! - Ed]

Time passes, Camila is widowed and inherits a great fortune. She decides to return to San Fernando and when she arrives is told that everyone thought she had died and that her sister Rita (Maite Embil) has married Santiago.

Soon afterwards she is visted by Ricardo, Timoteo's nephew, whom she recognizes immediately to be "El Antillano." Ricardo recognizes her, too, and feels again this inexplicable desire to protect her. Even though Camila knows that what Ricardo wants is to recover his family's fortune, she also feels an undeniable attraction and soon the two realize they are in love.

It turns out that Santiago still loves her, and up springs a furious rivalry between the him and Ricardo.

[I bet that fortune of hers didn't diminish her charms. - Ed.]

Camila is confused by this first affection that still beats in her heart, but which is now forbidden. At the same time, Ricardo - a man hunted by the authorities - hard and untameable - has woken in her heart a love which grows every day, and her body burns for the first time with the irresistable fire of passion.

>Lordy, I got a hot flash just reading this synopsis! Sure it's absurd but dang, it's also smoldering. Thanks for starting my Sunday off muy caliente, Melinama.

Thank you very much for the synopsis and history lesson, Capt'n.

J.R. :)

cool...it looks way better than what i did and informative, good thing i didn't post and in honor of of Pasión, i have changed my profile to a penguin pirate..Ahoy matey!

Thanks, Melinama--You did your first night rights proud, unlike the villain in this piece.[Here we go again with some incapacitado which seems to pop up ...or not...in lots of telenovelas.] As for first night rights, I wonder how prevalent they really were throughout history. In Braveheart, a young lass went tearfully to her fate with a randy old English lord , and Braveheart married secretly to keep his beloved safe...which resulted in her death. I am very excited about this new show despite the naysayers. I have peeked at episodes on Youtube, and I liked what I saw, so never fear, it will be fun. Pirates, ships, blacksmiths, long hair, fancy clothes, goodlooking men, romance...what's not to like. Thanks, Melinama.....and I agree about the promo picture...someone seemed to think that it would be a good idea to rip off Botticelli's Aphrodite on the halfshell..teehee.

Holy Moley. This is gonna be an action-packed telenovela unless they let parts of it drag on. Thanks for the synopsis. Of COURSE you have the first-night rights, Melinama!

Mary Cherry Fizz (aka Susanlynn)--there are NAYsayers? Who do they think they are? It doesn't even have to be good, it just has to have Colunga.

Jeanne

Jeanne~~~Wellsaid...You are so right !! ''Love exciting and new...Come aboard...We're expecting you-u-u-u'' ~~~Susanlynn, waiting for The Love Boat and Fernandoooooooooo with a headscarf, boots, and a sword

Thank you for the preview. I like the historical novelas best because of the period costumes. Of course, looking at Fernando will be nice, too!

Melinama, Thanks for pandering to, errrrr I mean supporting the feverish excitement that has been sprouting up in all parts of Caray2. And whoever said Fernando isn't aging well a few weeks ago needs only look at the silllyl but effective "birth of Venus" redo poster to see six-pack abs of gold on our golden boyo. Wow. I am anxious to get to know Rulli too, what a handsome thing he is. I hope Caray2's Madrina (godmother) Marianna Karr gets lots of air time. I really like her. I'm reporting on deck, Cap'n Meli, I am Ethel Bonney, stirring up a batch of hot rum toddys to salute the maiden voyage.

Between the talk of hot rum toddies and those 6-packs, I am getting thirsty. I think that Mariana has a pretty goodsized role, and she always brings her personality to her roles. Some of us had an unfortunate experience with Sebastian on ''Mundo do Fieras.'' [handhearts...don't get me started]...but I say...bygones...I'm willing to give Blondie a chance . ''Come sail away..come sail away ..come sail away with me..'' ~~~~Mary Cherry Fizz, hoisting the main sail...or...whatever...my seafaring life is limited to summer trips down the shore, occasionally gambling in Atlantic City, and listening to Asbury Park native Bruce Springsteen a lot

Thanks for the Synopsis Cap'n Meli the Mala. Lordy lordy it sounds like everything an innocent girl like meself could hope for...wench on the half-shell and a couple of angry studs willing to fight for her!

Hi all! I'm crazy excited about this one, it'll be my first period novella that I watch from the begining and don't have to grit my teeth because of the over dubbing (ya'll know of which one I speak!) Anyway, I've been away from the site for weeks and I've just started reading again and I'm seeing allusions to caray2, what is this? If there's more talk going on I want to know about it!

Lori

I've thought of a caption for the publicity poster. Fernando is saying to Sebastian , ''Someone stole both of our shirts. '' And Sebastian replies, ''I think that it might have been that girl in the gown on the rocks.''

Dear Melinama,
Thanks for the Pirate eye candy.
Was there a heroine rising from the water? I couldn't see anything but that body. He just gets better and better. Woof!

I stand by my conviction that Colunga's sagging facial structure can't support the weight of all that hair.

Fernando's face is sagging? Sorry, I didn't notice. I was too busy looking at other parts of him that don't sag! :) Anyway, heaven forbid that he would mess up his face like Burt Renyolds, Kenny Rogers, or Wayne Newton!!!!EEEEKK!!!!

Eduardo Yanez has had extensive facial plastic surgery and he looks great. Brad Pitt had a mid-face and rhididectomy before donning the long flowing locks of Achilles in "Troy".

Sorry, that should be "rhytidectomy". I think. My spelling deteriorates at ngith. Anyway, I like Yanez's face, and I liked his character even more when he quit ripping off his shirt gratuitously.

yes, destilando cafe, I think Eduardo Yanez looks great. He must have a great surgeon, thank goodness! Some men do age well, though, and probably don't have much surgery. (Sean Connery looks great, and Clint Eastwood looks good even with the wrinkles!

Well, if Eddy-boy had anything done, he didn't pay the guy nearly enough because that face, those eyes and that smile are worthy of millions, as in "million dollar smile" cuz it is mightee fine! Those eyes sparkle just as nicely too. The rest of him ain't bad neither, but that smile and those sparklin' eyes.....mmmmm-mmmmm.

Lori, No one answered your question because they are all in a state of ecstasy or confusion is my guess, but Caray2 and even shorter C2 is just a lazy or fast way of writing our site name: Caray Caray.
We have to do this because we need so much time to get our wooden legs, eye patches, and other paraphernalia ready for the inauguration of Pasión which starts in about 3 weeks. I will be stirring up a big kettle of hot rum toddies as soon as I get to port long enough to buy the spices...

From the synopsis, it looks as if most of the novela will be taking place on land. And who besides Ricardo and Mario is actually a pirate?

Well after hours of trying to add a picture to my blogger profile (it always helps to follow the INSTRUCTIONS, no?) I submit for your pleasure the Pirate Lass, Willa. Don't you think her long curly poodle ears look just a little like Fernando's (aka Ricardo) extensions??

Hee Hee, Cherylnewmex, what a cute doggie!! And her curly ears DO look like Fernando's! She will make a great mascot!
