Pasion Friday Dec 7 - Pirate Island
I know I intended to have this up last night, but life intervened once again. I hope Sundays are usually ok with all of you. I’m enjoying the show so far, but as usual with any new show, I stress big time about remembering everyone’s name. Here goes.
I’ll start with
UGH right away on the ship we see a huge rat. One of the pirates comes down to retrieve the two boys, somebody up top wants to see them. First mate (I can’t figure out his name-edit:turns out his name is Mario but that's a little too Nintendo so I'll stick with First Mate if that's ok) says he doesn’t want to return them to their cousin, who might kill them, but the boys don’t have what it takes to live as pirates. The boys are brought in. Antillano tells them he has two choices: he can buy their freedom and send them home to their mother, but if the rumors of their cousin are true, they might end up dead. Or, they can stay on and learn to be pirates. Well, Antillano says, there is one more choice – he can sell them when they get to La Mariana. It might not be too bad, someone might just want them as servants, but some depraved person might want to use them like women. The boys shudder at the thought. They want to think about the other two choices, Antillano says fine. On the way out, the older boy tells Antillano that he doesn’t look like a pirate, he looks like he comes from a good family, like is a Senor. He rambles on and on before first mate shuts him up and sends him out. First mate tells Antillano that he’s screwing up the negotiations, first he likes one of the women and now he’s giving the kids choices, he’s going to mess it up. Antillano says he isn’t going to mess it up. First mate goes on and on a bit about how much trouble having a woman around would be. He tells Antillano that above all, they have a contract to deliver people to La Mariana and they have to do it. First mate keeps referring to ‘Foreman’, who must be their boss. What a weird name. He says that Foreman won’t just yell at them if they mess it up, they might find themselves dead somewhere in the morning. Antillano seems to agree.
Storms. All the pirates rush around to ready the ship for the coming tormenta. The prisoners down below are thrown about as the ship rocks back and forth, as well as getting flooded by water raining down on them. Camila whines that the storm is a blessing, to kill them so they don’t have to live as slaves. Jimena tells her to not be stupid. Camila says it’s true, she is going to be reunited with her
As the storm rages on, I giggle when I keep hearing the squeals of pigs. Nice of them to get that detail in there. The ship is getting a

They go see Dona Sofia and explain that they lied to
Justo looks through Camila’s room, Rita wants to know what he’s looking for. He says something of Camila’s to show
The doctor says it’s a miracle that
Calm seas. The captain has given permission to leave the cargo hold, the prisoners all go up top and get doused with fresh water. I guess that’s the only bath they get. They are all tied to one of the other prisoners, so they shuffle around in twos. Camila and Jimena discuss the storm and captain Antillano, Jimena thinks he isn’t so bad if he offered to pay for the kids’ freedom. He’d be sending them to death back home, but I guess he’s so great for offering that. Whatever. They just think he’s cute I’m sure. The prisoners keep shuffling around in a circle and getting water thrown on them. Jimena notices Antillano staring at Camila. Jimena tells her to try and seduce the captain. Camila whines that she can’t do that, she has to save herself for
Antillano and First mate discuss the lovely ladies, who look far from lovely covered in dirt. Antillano greets the ladies. He tries to wipe some dirt off of Camila, she grabs the towel in her mouth and spits it on the floor. He says fine, then, be that way and he walks away. Jimena reads Camila the riot act for screwing that up so bad. Camila, who is starting to piss me off, gets all high and mighty and says whatever.
The boys tell Antillano that they decided that they want to go back home, not become pirates, so Antillano says fine. He’ll pay for their freedom, but then it’s up to them to find their own way home. There’s no way they’ll make it home, I guarantee it. Anyway, the boys are very happy. They ask about Camila, Antillano says it appears that she isn’t interested in his help.
Isla La Mariana – obviously the slave trading hub. Lots and lots of people tied up and tied together all over the place. I guess this is how things were back in the days of slavery. Camila looks back at Antillano, who has stayed on the ship. He looks at her too. I think she might be regretting being such a bitch. Somebody inspects the prisoners one by one, then hands First Mate a bag of gold. First Mate hands the rope holding the prisoners over to the buyer. As First Mate walks back to the ship, some guy right in front of the camera, wearing a red bandanna, is digging for gold up his nose. Finding something he likes, he pops it into his mouth right before the camera cuts away. Mrs. Ferro just about hurled her dinner up from that one. Of course we had to call Hijo in from the other room to see that part, he thought it was pretty funny. First Mate delivers the gold to Antillano. I guess the buyer was just the auctioneer or something, tomorrow will be the open auction for all of the slaves, tomorrow Antillano will pay for the kids so he can set them free. First Mate asks if he is going to buy the women too. He says no. First Mate is looking forward to a free night tonight, Antillano says they are leaving at noon tomorrow, anyone who isn’t back on board gets left behind.
The slaves are led to a holding cell, the guy yells at them to clean the bugs off and food will be brought later, this is where they will spend the night. The ladies rush to the water in the corner and wash up.
A mysterious hooded figure approaches a building and knocks, it is Ricardo Antillano. Some old guy opens the door. Antillano tells him that he’s glad La Mariana belongs to the French because he’s in less danger, but his mom still worries about him. I’m not sure what this place is, a church or a monastery or something? Antillano is dressed like a monk. He tells the guy to ‘tell her’ – whatever this place is, his mother is here. I was expecting to see Dona Juana but it’s some other woman. Her name is Mercedes. She is very happy to see him, as is Lisabeta, a young woman there, maybe it is his sister. Mercedes says it has been so long since she saw him, he says it has been a month. He can only stay this one night, then he has to leave again.
The next morning he has breakfast with his mother. He says he is going to see his godfather and find out the details of
The slave market is an ugly scene. All the people for sale look like hell, they all seem as if they have been in a ship for a week.
Lisabeta is apparently blind, she is being helped to breakfast by a servant and has a cane. Mercedes says that Lisabeta is the only one who visits her. The conversation leads me to believe that Antillano has been accused of something and everyone believes he is guilty except for his mother and Lisabeta. I think Lisabeta may be the daughter of Antillano’s godfather, or maybe his cousin, we don’t know yet. Lisabeta says something about being ‘his only heir’ and turning out to be a woman and blind. She must be referring to her father, who is maybe Antillano’s uncle? I hope this gets sorted out soon because I’m confused.
Camila comes up for sale. She yells to the crowd that she was kidnapped, the auctioneer punches her to shut her up. He moves on to sell one of the other women, letting Camila watch. On the street Antillano and First Mate confirm that Lazaro has the money to buy the kids. Antillano has his monk costume on, when he and First Mate separate they go through a mock ‘blessing’ to keep up disguises. It’s funny. At a door, Antillano tells the guard that he is Fray Diego de Lujan, looking for Don Gaspar de Valdez. That must be his padrino.
Jimena comes up for sale. Lazaro looks on, so far he hasn’t done anything.
Don Gaspar tells Antillano that the French have not granted clemency or freedom to any of the previously accused outlaws from Spanish rule, so he is still accused of whatever it is he has been accused of. He says “I didn’t kill that woman!” Don Gaspar tells him whatever, but they have to ask for a special pardon or whatever, but meanwhile he has a price on his head. Not only for murder, but also for piracy. Antillano says he has no option. Don Gaspar asks if he works for John Foreman, Antillano says yes. DG asks why he doesn’t retire, change his name, go somewhere neutral and open up a business? Antillano says he doesn’t have enough money for that. I guess Foreman owns the boat, not Antillano. Don Gaspar says the war will be over soon enough.
Some guy bought Jimena I guess, he takes her away. Camila looks on in horror. Now the boys are up for sale, they are a big deal because they can read and write. Jimena waves at Camila as her carriage rides away. For whatever reason, Lazaro is NOT stepping up to pay for them. We don’t know why, though, since that’s the end of today’s show.
Monday – Antillano says he is going to buy the women and leave them as servants for his mother, so when he goes back to

“I know her fiancé was almost killed and she had to get naked with creepy Don Jorge and she was kidnapped and she’s in the bottom of a ship with a pig and rats and was raped by a pirate, but jeez, quit your whining” ROTFL!!! This is a classic Ferro line. I love it!
“When they get there, Antillano decides that his shirt is too wet and takes it off. I hope all you ladies were watching.” You bet your sweet okole we were. It’s about time we got some of the perks.
“Rita can’t keep herself from gushing over him when she comes in.” This muchacha is already annoying the heck out of me. Someone needs to shake her and tell her to quit that stuff, especially the eye-rolling every time anyone mentions her sister.
“Camila whines that she can’t do that, she has to save herself for Santiago” Apparently she doesn’t understand how it works. It’s too late for that. Someone needs to take this chick aside and explain it all to her.
“Mrs. Ferro just about hurled her dinner up from that one. Of course we had to call Hijo in from the other room to see that part, he thought it was pretty funny.” ROTFL!!! He’s what, 8 now? Do you REALLY want him doing that at school to show all his friends?
“Lisabeta is apparently blind, she is being helped to breakfast by a servant and has a cane.” Yeah. “Apparently” is the key word. She’s definitely a sighted actress playing blind. I’ll do my professional best to refrain from comments about her cane use (except that the “technique” she was attempting to use didn’t come into use until after WWII, and not with that kind of cane, and most folks who are using a sighted guide don’t use their canes at the same time—it’s one or the other. But I’m not going to comment, am I?)
Ferro, for the record, hubby is sitting behind me and wondering why I’m cackling so loudly.

The big rat was a nice touch, he looked like the best fed one of the bunch. I don't know how I managed to miss the nose picking detail, but I'm just as glad that I can't record right now. Thanks for all the laughs.
For the record, I felt obliged to alter my name too. What a slave to fashion I have become. Willa wasn't as amused by the pigs as I was, she only wants horses or other poodles, looks like it's horses to me. See ya around the blog, I'm glad your wit and sarcasm are going to help us get a grip on this new show, looks like some rough seas ahead..
I don't hate Camila yet, I like her angular look (Hipolita and Whosis in Amor Real were too softie looking for what they were going through). I'm sorry the writers had her saying, as she circled on board the boat with water being thrown on her, "I want to go home." Like the others don't?
Anitllano's excuses for why he is still a pirate were so lame. I suppose this is supposed to keep us from hating him as he does evil pirate things but they were very unconvincing.
I KNEW Rulli would cry and cry. I didn't like him in the last one and I don't like him in this one. OK (to borrow your construction) you were lost on a desert island for four years and came home for a couple days and your sweetie got supposedly raped by the Massah and then disappeared and you got stabbed and you're paralyzed, but quit your bellyaching. How about some of that manly toothclenching instead?
Camila is the helpless, whining, and stupid heroine, how dull. If she hadn't run off crying into the woods, the pirates wouldn't have nabbed her. (This could've been less predictable.) Even after her last few days of hell, she prefers to be sold and do ?!??!, than to take her chances with Antillano.
The writer is a woman, right? But, the women are less valued in almost every way possible. Though, I'm hoping Sofia may end up being brave and killing Don Jorge...

Nice storm that, lots of lightning, thunder and rain but completely flat seas. What a miracle.
Hoorah, Fernando flesh within one week! Thanks for pointing that out Chris, as if we would miss it; still it's nice to know you're looking out for us.
Yep, that Camila is a whiner. She's no Marlena Favela, that's for sure, but I haven't given up on her yet.
Schoolmarm, please DO comment about the blind details, and I will comment about the lame nautical details or lack thereof.
Griping aside, I'm really enjoying this show. Even though the sound quality is weird sometimes, the fight and storm scenes seem convoluted, and I want to slap Rulli's face every time he sheds a tear, it still has that something that intrigues me.
And while I know it's not fair to pick on a low-budget show for bad special effects, I really didn't need to see that toy ship floating around in the bathtub during the storm.
Here's to hoping that Camila will get a spine, that Santiago's tear ducts will dry up, and that we'll be treated to more scenes of Capt. Ric w/o a shirt. Those things combined will make for most enjoyable viewing.
In total agreement on the ship in the tub "special" effects. I could do without those as well.

I am liking Pasion so far and seeing the Fernando without his shirt was a plus but to go below when your ship's in trouble??
At that point, wouldn't you be abandoning ship and what about steering the ship? Who is manning the wheel?
I must admit that Camila is a lily-livered lass and I am very disheartened. I hope she toughens up..look at what Hipólita Díaz went through in Alborada and did we hear her whine and complain? No, she was a saucy wench and that is more to my likin'
Begad, we get to see a real bilge rat, mind you. Now that is what I would call Don Jorge: a bilge-sucking rat.
Fair winds me mateys, until the next episode. Jan Z. aka Sealegs Eliz.
I'm really sorry I deleted this episode before I had a chance to check out the booger buffet - I missed it the first time around.
I too hope to see Camilla toughen up and quit whining. I like Dona Sofia--she's not lacking backbone.
Thanks for the recap!
La Paloma
Sistah Rita should get herself some red coloring (maybe cook down some beets) it would keep her face from being so sour and disgusted every time Camila's name is mentioned like when Santi moans pitifully for his lost lover. She might find it fun and festive like I did. Might do wonders to improve her grumpy mood.
But who cares what these wenches do if Anillano sheds clothes often. Bring on those silly tempests in a teapot! He obviously doesn't like getting wet. And we don't want him to be unhappy, right? I'd hold the warm towel to comfort him.
ricky looks SO good dressed like a monk. thank goodness i've never seen a monk so goodlooking, or it would be hard going to confession. i thought the blessing scene was funny...hehe... i like mario!!
in reg to cami's whining, i guess that's just going to be part of her personality in this novela. she's probably not going to be as strong as hipo. but then again, there's a place for everyone in novela land...even for the most annoying, eye-rolling, eyebrow-raising, witch-sister rita.
the pig and rats part was priceless..
