Juan Q -Wed 3/19/08- Tears, Jeers, and some recuperating of past years

We just heard the doc telling Juan Pau’s ok, but baby didn’t make it. Juan tells the doc that this can’t happen, Pau is in good health, and this meant so much to her. Doc is sorry, but this can actually happen in 30% of pregnancies in the first trimester. She still is resting, so when she wakes, we’ll tell her. He says this is going to cut his palomita to pieces (puñalada).

Yadi asks Juanito what he’s doing, he says he’s protecting himself and the baby from the thunderstorm that’s coming. Yadi says none coming so don’t use my linens to play with. He swears Dona Nidia said one was coming, into the house even. Yadi says that’s because she’s going to make it happen. Juanito is amazed that Nid can make thunderstorms. Yadi confirms and what a big size too.

Juan struggles with whether he should call CL, he says maybe she doesn’t want him to like last time when she tried to kill herself, but then he thinks that this is a different situation, both father and mother have the right to know about this. But then CL was so upset when he saw them together earlier that he might just come here and do nothing more than annoy (poner el gorro) on his Palomita, and what if she ends up sick. He decides instead he should call Juanito.

Yadi answers the phone. Juan asks what’s up and Juanito tells Juan things are under control now, there was a terrible storm in the house. Yadi tells him to make sure he says it’s a game or Juan’ll have an attack. Juan says he’s going to be late, and Juanito can tell that he is sad about something. He says he’s with Pau and then gets all misty eyed and tells Juanito he’s the best thing that ever happened to him. He tells Juanito that here the sky is falling so he just wants him to know that he loves him. He cuts it short to talk to the doc who tells him Pau is awaking.

Nid is wondering why Pau is taking so long. Anga says right now she’s doing something more important and Nid wants to know how he knows that. He tells Nid he did her a favor and arranged a meeting between Pau and Juan. Ever since he’s got to know her, he’s seen how unhappy she is with that good for nothing CL and that she doesn’t love him, so he thought if he could help he would, so they wouldn’t end up like the two of them. He couldn’t change what happened between him and Nid, but maybe for those two who are still young. She wonders if he’s going to complain about her more he says nope on the contrary, Anga is proud of Nid. She is surprised and says she’s going to start thinking that he’s madly in love (chocheando-this can also mean senile, so both meanings actually could apply). He says it’s not that, rather she is maturing and confronting her errors, so he’s very proud, oh and it’s sexy.

CL calls Consuelo who tells him she isn’t home nor has she called, he gets snippy with her and tells her to call if she hears anything.

Pau wakes up and asks the nurse what’s up with the spawn. Nurse pushes it off on the doc who will inform her. She wanders out in total avoidance and allows Juan to come in who tells Pau that sometimes God needs little angels in heaven. Of course Pau knows what that means and she cries on his shoulder. Very sad and scary. I just can’t help but think of the irony, that of course in telenovela land we are supposed to kind of want this to happen so she could leave CL in good conscience. Kind of perverse to think of this as a positive, but I sort of expected it. Oh well.

Anga tells Nid she’s as sexy as she was when she was 16. In fact, her eyes shine as bright. Nid suddenly has to go because she has a lot of things to do and well Pau isn’t going to show up. Anga offers her the plate of Gods, and some human tortas. She isn’t sure about that, she thought maybe they’d just let down their hair, he says they need the tortas to recharge their engines for peace negotiations. So that's what folks of that generation call it.

Pau blames herself for working too hard and not eating well, or she should have been in a better mood. Juan very sweetly tells her not to blame herself, this happens to many women, and this is just life and God’s way. He reminds her how much she was willing to do for this child, giving up many things to have this child. She says this child was her reason for living and she would have wanted to tell him how much he was wanted over and over again. Juan reminds her that this is not necessary to tell face to face, that the love of a mother to her baby is automatically felt, and that connected with the baby and will be with him throughout the universe and that God has his reasons for these things. So very sweet.

Cl sucks it up and calls Anga for news about Pau, he coldly says she’s not around but should he leave her a message. Cl says no thanks.

Ivy goes in to see if she can do anything for Fer. She fakes she doesn’t know. He yells at her and tells her leave him alone, she obviously knows, he’s not married, he’s had no honeymoon, and she’s probably thrilled to see him miserable, so get out now. She tries to say she’s not, and he doesn’t buy it and leaves instead.

Pau calls CL. He mocks that she finally shows signs of life and wonders where the hell she is. He yells at her incessantly for planning this tryst with Juan and how could she do this to him, this is the worst and he regrets that she’s the woman he let carry his child, ouch. That is soooooo low. Juan listens to her getting more and more upset. She finally hangs up with out telling CL the reason for her call.

Marely confronts Yadi about the inheritance and her secret ways. Yadi says she wasn’t a part of it and she is nobody to tell of her mother’s secrets. Yadi accuses Mar of exacting revenge by giving over the money to her half sister and putting her mom in jail. Mar says that’s not what she’s doing, but her Mom has to answer for this.

CL asks Ivy what he’s done wrong. She’s like huh? and asks in your life in general or about a specific error in mind. He thinks that all of his women ended up playing him. She says maybe the idea that your women are YOUR women is the problem. You think? She tells him he shouldn’t act like they are his property. She says that he doesn’t need consolation, instead advice, so she’ll give him two. Don’t try to understand the un-understandable and stop drinking by yourself. He thinks he should just go off somewhere, she says this time that trick won’t work. She accuses him of thinking only of himself. She thinks he should start anew, but somewhere else.

Juan shows up and gets a greeting of surprise from Ivy who wonders how he is, that he looks agitated, and when he says he’s looking for CL, she warns him that he’s in rare form partly because of Juan. Juan doesn’t need her to announce him, he goes in without being announced. CL is impactado to see him too and asks if he’s there to rub in his face that he took the business or the wife. Juan says neither, this has to do with you two, and Pau lost the baby.

Back at the hospital, the nurse tells Pau that her “husband” left for a little while and that he went to tell someone personally what happened. Pau is impactada and figures he went to find CL.

CL says this is all Juan's fault, but Juan says not true, he couldn’t do anything that would hurt Pau. Cl wonders why he had to come back, you damn goat sucker. (Maldito Chupacabras -did you see it?). Juan continues to hold the high ground and shames CL for blaming everyone else for his problems and not running to be by his wife's side when she is so destroyed - if he loves her so much. Next they calmly walk out of the office and Ivy rushes up and asks to go down with them. Cl tells her she isn’t going anywhere. He calls her a gossip and calls her on it that she stayed just to find out what happened to tell everyone tomorrow. He calls her a snake, (Vibora) and lets the elevator shut in her face.

Pastor and Fer are having coffee. Rughead wants to know why Fer is so sad and they canceled the wedding. Fer doesn’t want to talk about his problems. Pastor guilt trips him that he has no confidence in him. Fer finally just says that Mar just doesn’t care for him enough to forgive his past errors. Pastor wants to know what they are. Fer stays composed and decides that he’s tired so he better just go. Thank heavens he doesn’t spill the beans to Pastor. Surely he’s spying for Ivy, Viboro.

Mar and Yadi are worrying about their Mom now as it’s getting late. Marely calls the market and Mama answers - they are worried about her and think she should come home because of the hour. Nid says nope, Pau hasn’t been in touch, but she’s decided to be honest so, she’s going to wait all night if she has to, to tell Pau what’s up. Just then Anga begins kissing her shoulder, and she reaffirms that she’s not going anywhere just now. They make out.

Mar finds out from Juanito that Juan is with Pau and that he’s very sad and will be home late. Juan shows up at the hospital with CL who is annoyed that Juan was called the husband. Juan and he again exchange words, that Cl is arrogant, and Juan may not be educated but he has valor, something CL could never understand. Cl walks away after calling him naco and an imbecile. Even the nurse thinks he’s a jerk. Juan tells himself each day he really thinks more that Pau doesn’t deserve that idiot.

Mar and Yadi say goodnight to Juanito and speculate what Pau and Juan are doing, Yadi thinking they are having a great time, and Mar thinking Juan is a gentleman and Pau is pregnant so no way are they getting it on. Yikes, that would be pretty classless since you put it that way.

Back at the hospital, just when you think CL will finally console his wife, what does he do? Blames her for killing his child. She did it on purpose and she must be satisfied now. Ugh, how awful. He yells accusation, after accusation, after accusation at full volume at her and she begs him to leave that this is enough, he is upset like her and doesn’t even know what he is saying. Yes, he does, sorry Pau, but he is a first class A-hole and I certainly wouldn’t even give him the benefit of the doubt here, but that’s just me, I guess. He mocks her saying she was sooo confused but clearly those were lies, and that he can’t believe Juan would be worth all this, and he’s not going to just leave. Finally, I guess Juan hears her screaming and he rushes in and ushers CL out.

Anga tells Nid how long he’s dreamed of having her in his arms again and she says the dream will come true, but he says he doesn’t just want her in his bed, he wants her tonight and every night for the rest of their lives. Awww....

Moni is on the phone with Gustavo. Laura tries to convince Mon to go to Miami, it’s her future. She fights it and doesn’t know if she should go. Wah wah, ok, I’ve had enough of this, just stop it already, this guy is hot, nice, lives in the US in Miami for gosh sakes, she’s known him for years, and he clearly has the means to support himself and her very well. This is a no-brainer except in messed up Querendon novelaland!!! Oh well.

Outside, CL is yelling he wants Juan dead, and that oh sure, now that his wife hates him and killed his child, the path is clear for Juan to waltz on in. Juan tells him he’s not that kind of guy, and CL should be crying for his dead child and supporting his wife instead. Farell says no one tells him what to do and begins insulting Juan. Juan tells him not to go there, but he does anyway, and they end up scrapping despite the nurse's pleas. We end with Juan holding CL smashed up against the wall.

Thanks for the recap! I was hanging on every one of Juan's sweet words to Paula last night and enjoying how calm and collected and mature he seemed talking to CL who had regressed to psychopathic infantilism.

Odd, this is the third non-baby in this show - first Monica, then Nidia, now Paula.

Wow, what a trampoline episode, down, then up, then down, then up. I think Alexis Ayala rivaled the phone-throwing Sergio Sendel last night. I thought his head was going to explode. He is a world class jerk. (Did y'all get a load of him pouring his booze into a snifter the size of a fish bowl?) I thought Ivonne's comments to him were very interesting.

And Juan, what a guy! I'm more in love with him than ever. He was awesome with his calm reassurances to Pau and the way he manhandled CL out of Pau's room. I think our Juan has made the leap from lovable rascal to a real hero.

Gotta say, there is some really good acting in this show. Even Pau brought a tear to my eye.

Nidia and Angarita...yahoooo!!

Thanks Kris! I was really hoping to be able to read your take on things over my morning tea. I especially enjoy your personal comments. Wonderful recap!

Kris, I too thank you...and for those idioms...I didn't have a clue what "poner el gorro" meant. Yes, Cesar Luis was loathsome but it was also a good illustration of how crazy-making jealousy is....and it wasn't surprising he thought the worst when Paula and Juan disappeared from everyone's sight. She'd rejected him and also shown great reluctance to be pregnant...so even though we were supposed to find his reaction awful...under the circumstances it wasn't surprising...even for a nice guy, which clearly he isn't. Anyway, the long slow setup made his ugly rant quite believable. Just sayin'....and yes, I loved Juan's assurances except for the traditional "God just needed some more angels up in heaven"...I hate that response to someone's loss. I don't find it comforting at all. But maybe that's just me.

Kris, thanks for the great, speedy recap of a very sad episode with not too many high moments from my perspective. Thanks, too, for the vocabulary.

Cheryl, you mentioned last night you hope this means we lose Delirio. I second the motion. He’s become more tedious than most any other character I’ve ever seen on a novela.

Bright spots are still: Marely, as several noted last night, who is really getting a chance to shine. She has just grown a backbone to match her loving, caring personality. Tough love for Nidia; and Juanito (the baby, too, but as someone noted, her vote doesn’t count yet). Marely should end up with Juanito just because. Maybe she can adopt him. (sigh)

Last night’s episode with CL screaming at Paula about losing HIS baby, as if she did it on purpose, brought back all the terrible memories of 1985 when my baby girl was stillborn at 23 weeks and my ex-husband screamed at me (albeit in sign language) with just these words. I was too busy working, it was my fault, I didn’t really want that baby, etc., etc. I am hopeful there is a special place in h*** for husbands who do this to wives who have just lost a part of themselves that they wanted so desperately. I hope CL hits ROCK bottom and suffers for the next several months. The heck of it is, he is unlikely to register his own culpability in his situation because is he so self-absorbed. His jealousy is about his power to control Paula and all his women. I once knew a guy like this. (Not my ex). He was really scary—he told me how much he wanted to control his “women.” Ew. CL is like this.

Judy B, you are so right, the response of God needing more angels does not help in this situation. Nor does “it was probably for the best,” nor “you can always adopt.”

Jeanne

Oh, Jeanne. I'm so sorry to hear that you had to go through something so devastating, on top of being blamed for it. That really was an infuriating scene with CL last night. I was beside myself. It may be terrible to say, but Paula's miscarriage is a blessing in disguise, so she doesn't have to be saddled with CL for the rest of her life (sorry, poor little baby).

It is unfortunate that many friends have no idea how to respond to miscarriage, and end up hurting a woman with well-meaning words that come off as ignorant. *sigh*

Juan should be commended for just holding the ass off rather than busting him in the face, which he could have done quite easily. CL looked like a pithy little mosquito buzzing around Juan--no threat at all. Hmph.

Jeanne...every time I think about what you had to go through, I cringe. Paula's just an actress speaking lines. You lived it. When I miscarried I found ways to blame myself, but fortunately no one else was doing it...at least not out loud.
It does seem to be a typical male way of handling sorrow (correct me if I'm wrong, male bloggers). Sadness seems wussy and wimpy so they lash out in anger instead, and women are a handy target...dating from Adam and Eve times. I still marvel that in the Middle Ages scholars were seriously debating whether or not "women actually had a soul". Men did, of course, without question.
And for decades, thanks in part to Philip Wylie, "momism" was blamed for homosexuality and just lately has the genetic component in orientation been recognized.
Hopefully we can get past blaming either women or men, and just take responsibility for our own thoughts and actions, as uncomfortable as that may be. Working on it....trudge, trudge, trudge.

Wow, the "coincidences" of similarities to real life never cease to amaze me with this show. Cap'n Jenny, I'm so thankful that you rose above your traumas and are in a much better place these days.

And Judy, yeah, I do agree that it was believeable (whether despicable or not) from both sides really, because I totally get how a guy in CL's situation, especially with his personality and recent events could feel that way about this loss, and her feeling guilty, so not holding him too accountable for his harsh words. That was painful to watch though, and there is no change in the bottomline that CL is painted as a selfish jerk.

Meli, interesting observation about the non-baby count. Actually too, didn't Ivy fake it at some point too very early on or in a flashback? I think we've nearly covered the female mains. I predict if this art guy works out for Ana, maybe we'll have a surprise there, and well Mar is ripe at some point too. Then we'll get them all flirting with it. Hmmm...starting to wonder if the writers have a bias not stretching beyond the old adage that women only serve one function....yikes! Actually, no, the writers seem fairly progessive given the plotlines, but still...

PS I added a few things, including a lovely video of the "Chupacabra" check it out and see what you think....

Sheesh, and I put 2007. I 've been out of pocket for a few weeks well maybe months, just goes to show you where my mind was, back in the old year even!!! Anyway, I did place some random comments on old dates a while back that I finally caught up with. Never know if people will go back to look at them though.

I love all the re-caps and appreciate the hard work that goes into them! Thanks ladies!
So can someone tel me.... does Laura have any function in life beyond sitting on Monica's sofa and spouting advice?? I can't figure her out??

Thanks to all of you who expressed your kind thoughts. I know I have mentioned this a couple of times here. It's ironic, because in the nearly quarter century, I have talked about Sara rarely. It's just that his screaming hit me between the eyes and I had hoped he'd tank before he saw her and go in and hold her, comfort her, and things would improve. Always optimistic, I was really sickened by this. Alexis Ayala did a superb job of being a total a**wipe. He made me dislike him so actively I almost turned the television off, forgetting it was just a novela.

Anon, Laura seems to be some kind of artist and she doesn't seem to have a steady job. We wondered if she's independently wealthy or something. She definitely seems to have the job of being Monica's sounding board, all right.

Jeanne

Good grief...I never knew "chupacabras" were supposed to be real phenomena...ended up watching several videos of supposed sightings and whatnot...quite an education you're giving us, Karen.

Oh Jeanne, what a horrible thing to have happened to you. It must so very painful to miscarry, as you and JudyB experienced, but to be blamed as well...ugh. Seeing CL's reaction makes the scenario too real. It was a dreadful scene and I wanted to fast forward but I found myself mesmerized as if watching a train wreck.

The first time I ever heard of a Chupacabra was when I used to work in a kitchen with a bunch of guys from Mexico. That was like the worst insult they could hurl at each other.

Lucky you Sylvia! Now I know why your Spanish is so awesome...hanging out with native speakers is the best. William Harvey, who has written a gazillion "learn Spanish" books said he first learned it bussing tables with native speakers... so you got the right start, that's for sure.
I'm a little too long in the tooth to work in a restaurant but even here in Ohio that would be a great place to pick up the language.

Hee hee, yeah the Chupacabra at least in legend, is akin to Big Foot, or the Wolfman, or even aliens. Seems like there are various reported sightings, and attributed animal slayings, but never any conclusive scientific evidence to establish a definite species. Anyway, he's a fun creature to endear yourself to, unless you have goats of course. :)

Cesar Luis is a vile excuse for a man. While most novelas are filled with dysfunctional characters, I don't think that I've seen one where a character is as flat out abusive as CL is. He is a controlling, manipulating b*stard who is one step away from punching his wife.

I'm glad that Pau is finally seeing him for what he truly is.

Can it be that soon Juan will be in the "seat" now occupied by CL? What a turn of events here...Can't wait until the sleeze is thrown to the street..CL can stand in line for payback to him..Monica is throwing him right under the bus,and Paula will be/or is already there to back up the bus and run him down again..Finally, the "two' have stopped being a doormat for that arrogant, cigarette puffing ingrate..
