Juan-Tuesday April 22, '08 A Wildly Fluctuating Job Market
Whew...this was a real rollercoaster ride with jobs lost, jobs regained, romances about to start, romances nipped in the bud, romance revisited. My mind is reeling...join me and get confused!
We begin with a brief review of the scene where Paula gets all tender and conciliatory and Juan is schmoozing, forgiving all her goofs...and hoping for a kiss.
Then we switch to the warehouse where Yadira blows in like a storm, only to find that Kike has been fired. Yadira looks thoughtful...and pained...like thinking is a new experience for her.
Back to warm- as -honey, deep lingering looks between Paula and Juan. Ah the good ol' days. Yvonne breaks it up by transferring a call from "la mujer misteriosa", our randy Laura wanting to make sure Juan shows up tonight, and in comfortable clothes no less, 'cause there's going to be another lesson--in ceramics, of course.
The temperature in the room drops about 30 degrees and Paula gets that little cat's ass mouth that she has when she's unhappy. She wraps up the discussion quickly and informs Juan, who has been babbling on the phone with Laura trying to make it sound like a business call, that there's no need to "hablar en clave" (talk in code), there's nothing between them after all (ouch! thinks Juan) and he's free to enjoy the company of his woman friend. Do I know her?, she adds casually. And actually she does, but Juan doesn't realize this.
We have a little mirror image scene where Juan leaves thinking she makes him feel like the best and worst of men, and Paula confiding to Marely that Juan makes her feel like the best and worst of women. Sorry, Marely fans, looks like Paula and Juan are going to end up together.
However Marely remains a big Paula supporter herself. She's already castigated Pastor for gossiping in the lounge that Paula is taking all the blame for the Campeoni disaster (Not Pastor's fault, no, no, no!!!) and later she will insist on accompanying Paula when Paula decides to go look for Cesar Luis (I guess we knew that was coming).
Ivonne comes into the office to ask for a few days off to have her tonsils out, not wanting Juan to know how seriously ill she is. And Juan asks Pastor to find some work for Flor's mother to do. This woman interests me...we never see her...she's always inside the hut or far away, kissing Flor good-bye before school. Will she always be a mysterious figure?
Now we switch to Topete, tyrannizing the classroom, stalking around with a big stick (ruler?) in his hand, wearing his patched elbow university jacket. The Juanito bullies have chosen Flor as their new target but Juanito defends her, saying when she gets new clothes she'll look great, whereas you will always have your stupid face. Bully numero uno is furious when his two buddies laugh uproariously.
Juanito and Flor continue their gentle flirtation and reassurance while Topete mocks them in the background. Could we hate this skanky guy any more?!
Mme Pomposo flutters around the schoolyard trying to find out what happened to her husband and gets the vague explanation that it was due to "restructuring".
Meanwhile, in the office, Juan discusses Ivonne's "tonsilectomy" with Fernando and wonders why she's so worried about such a simple operation. You think cancer is simple!? answers a stunned Fernando. And we break for an ad.
Juanito is reassuring Mme Pomposo that they'll talk to his dad and get this job switch straightened out...we hate this new guy, he adds...and I think I know him!
Juan and Fernando are still talking about Ivonne's situation. Fernando is understandably worried and somewhat gloomy But Juan exhorts him not to "echar sal" on Ivonne (jinx her) with his pessimism....and to remember, like the sportscasters say, "The last minute is a full 60 seconds!" Besides which, Ivonne is such a piece of work, even the Grim Reaper wouldn't want her! That finally gets Fernando smiling.
We have a brief, unfortunate shot of Alirio, emerging from the bathroom at Casa Cachon, wearing a robe, socks and shoes, vowing to devote all his time to Nidia now that he's back home. He's concocted a story to explain his absence last night, claiming to have been assaulted and left half clothed and utterly humiliated (well that part's right) in the street.
In the other bedroom, Stormin' Norman Yadira is digging out the real reason Kike was fired. It wasn't just because Angarita woke up in a bad mood (de pocas pulgas) but because Kike put the kibosh on Nidia moving in with him. She's furious and is ready to go rip a new one on Angarita. Who better or more qualified?
Juan is musing about his dinner/ceramics date as Fernando smiles knowingly (who says men only talk about sports?) and when Ivonne comes in,Juan tells her to always put through the "mujer mysteriosa" when she calls. And who would that be? Hey, it wouldn't be a mystery if I told you! Then he tenderly tells her to keep her chin up for that "tonsil operation" while Fernando gazes at her with equal tenderness. Anyone see a rerun romance coming?
Brief scenes with a despondent Lorenzo tearing up his textbooks and Paula vowing to go to Canada and find out whassup with Cesar Luis if its the last thing she does! And of course Marely insists on going with her, as I mentioned previously. So what if you're taking my house and home half-sister? I'm on your side.
Now comes a series of scenes between Angarita and Yadira but I'll compress them all into one. She comes in with both barrels firing and the more she storms the more bemused and entranced Angarita looks. Why?...'cause she reminds him of the fiery, tempestuous Nidia when she was younger...in fact she's the "vivo retrato" (spitting image) of the love of his life.
And along with promising to rehire Kike, Angarita ends up telling her how he lost Nidia to Samuel Cachon and how he would hate to see Yadira make the same mistake and lose her true love (Kike) the way he did. Yadira looks thoughtful again (and pained, like she has gastrointestinal cramps). Clearly, thinking is very hard work for her...and not particularly successful either. She denies that she has any feelings for that big lug, as Angarita maintains, she just wants justice...justice do you hear?!
That scene was fun...the scenes with Lorenzo, though, are poignant and painful. He's downgrading himself and his life, berating himself for being a mediocre man, a failure, a dreamer, a good-for-nothing....every insult his wife hurled at him previously and more. Devoted his life to his work and his students, only to be thrown in the street like a dog.
Senora Pomposa sends Juanito out to the yard to play so he won't witness this painful scene, but of course our little guy phones his papa and asks him to come to the rescue.
Which means of course, that once again Laura will be left in the lurch...this time "for a friend who's having problems" although Juan promises to come by later, and throws in some kisses, mua mua mua.
And speaking of kiss-offs, Topete (make that "Torpete") gets a good one from Kike who recognizes his voice and chides him for trying to find his mujer, who clearly prefers her own house to that hovel Topete has her in. Score a big one for Kike! Nacho mutters the classic telenovela phrase "no puede ser". That seems to be in every script ever written.
Back in the "chisme lounge", Julia is quizzing Ivonne. How come you lose your job? then you get your job back? then you're going on vacation? are you getting it on with Juan? Ivonne blows her off and then leaves with Fernando, who later, and with much tenderness, tells her no,Pastor is not going to take her to the hospital as planned....HE is...and he'll stay with her. A sweet good-bye and a promise of better things to come...if that operation is just successful.
Nidia's on the telephone telling Marely that Alirio is back home, after his supposed assault and then we have another mother-daughter scene with Ana arguing that Paula shouldn't go to Canada looking for Cesar...and if she does, well Ana's going with her.
My second favorite telenovela phrase is "quedar con brazos cruzados"...and,well, Paula can't do it! She MUST go, and Marely is going with her. Mama needs to stay and watch over the gallery. Let me do it my way! she insists. Now THAT sounds like the old Paula.
Kike is touched and happy that Yadira ran off to defend him to Angarita, And Yadira, or "Yaditzy" as Dorado Dave calls her, looks quite happy to be ensconced in the chair in the bedroom, chatting with Kike while the baby sleeps on the bed.
So Kike's got his job back, Yadira's got a job at the same place, but will Juan be able to reinstate Lorenzo at the school? He and Juanito do their little beard brush together and Juan heads off to do battle with the principal.
Said principal is tipped back looking at a magazine. Reran the tape twice to see what if it was a naughty magazine but couldn't tell. He flings it aside rapidly though and messes with papers on his desk as Juan bursts into the room.
There's some "cover your anatomy" bushwa going on with the principal assuring Juan that the orders came from above, he was just "following orders" so Juan vows to take it to the next level. He will be heard!
Besides, adds the principal, Lorenzo didn't protest his dismissal. That's because he has something this school doesn't! fires back Juan....DIGNITY!!!
Switch to Nidia on the phone, tremulously telling Ana she'll be out of the house in a few days and she'll get all the necessary papers to Paula. Don't rush, replies Ana. She's got so much on her mind...take a couple of weeks.
Cheering up, Nidia wants to commiserate with Ana about the loss of the gallery but hey, the news is good...Ana has a new partner and things are going great. Nidia is immediately jealous...I suppose this new partner is handsome, mature and loaded, right!? And indeed he does seem to be.
Well, we leave the Pomposo house with things still looking bleak. Lorenzo is staring at his chess set and suffering the effects of too much rum.
However, it's all celebration at the Cachon household. Alirio of course is jealous that Angarita has saved the day for Yadira and Kike (he stalked off with his breakfast earlier) but the mood is cheerier at dinner (except for Marely) with Yadira and Kike happy and cosy, Juan extolling his "rapprochement" with Paula and...taking it to the next level, saying he has the money in hand (a little lie, though he is making headway with the female loan officer) to make an offer to buy the house from Paula.
Marely, the one specter at the feast, grumpily tells him he can't make an offer to Paula tomorrow...because she's going on a trip...and Marely is going with her.
And we end with Juan looking muy, pero muy impactado.

I love your title. There are certainly more job changes than one can count lately including jobs lost and regained on a whim it seems.
And what is wrong with Marely's brain. I am always impressed by her sweetness but how can she have no negative feelings about her father rejecting her in favor of her half sister who wasn't even nice to him until he was dead???
Remember, Marely has Juanito pulling for her also...
Yes, Sylvia, the time difference (I'm in the Midwest) does make it seem like I'm a wizard, but really I just start writing the recap as soon as possible after the show 'cause data moves very fast through my mind....and then departs! Same reason I always pay my bills (and mail 'em) as soon as they come in. Otherwise chaos ensues.
Cheryl, love your good heart and I'm sure Willa was as comforting a presence as you were to your friend.
I gave a talk once about the lay hospital ministry to a group, adding at the end two stories about the comfort a dog, in one case, and a cat in the other, gave to the seriously ill. That generated more animal compassion stories than you can ever imagine! As the Italians say, "The more I see of man, the more I love animals" Glad your Willa is such a treasure.
Anonymous #1...so you think Marely has a "hidden agenda", eh? Well, yes, she probably would love to see Paula with Cesar Luis, if she could be happy, but she's kidding herself if she thinks eliminating our "harpy on jet fuel" would win her Juan. He seems to be hopelessly in love with Paula, and by telenovela rules, these love-at-first sight passions MUST and DO last forever.
But hey, I could be wrong...sure wouldn't be the first time!
Yes, a positively dizzying episode. Whew! I forgot to look at Paula's shoes. I doubt she will be wearing open toes in Canada.
Go Sharks!
I can't take credit for the "cat's ass" mouth...I think one of our other recappers used it...but it is so apt. And since we have a cat who settles down on our laps however she pleases! I can confirm that it's an absolutely accurate description.
And oh, would that you were right about Marely and Juan ending up together!...she's such a sweetie and I still remember how cute she looked dancing with him in one of the earliest episodes.
I'll join you on "Team Marely" but I think we may lose the championship, good buddy.
I'm Mike Martin in Yorktown, VA. My "medio-Cubana esposa" and I are well and truly hooked on this show.
There are a few comments and a lot of questions that Emilia and I have for you, but let me start with two comments for now.
1. THANK YOU all for the recapping!
2. I believe the opening sequence is prophetic in that Marely "aces" Paula into the passenger seat of the convertible.
Well and truly appreciated, believe me.
HOPE you're right on the meaning of Marely slipping into the convertible first; but then the next sequence shows Paula in the passenger seat I think.
But again....hoping you and Dorado Dave are right and that Team Marely wins!
AAANNNYYYWWAAYYY......
I commented on yesterday's too just now. There was a long list of hardships we've been through - I sure hope the issues go better for everyone. I know I've acknowledged some of them, but if I missed any, it's because I've missed reading about them, not because I don't care. I always wish the best for every one of us. Hope that goes understood! :)
Mike and Emilia, welcome to our happy little family!
“Yadira looks thoughtful...and pained...like thinking is a new experience for her.” ROTFL!
“he's free to enjoy the company of his woman friend. Do I know her?, she adds casually. And actually she does, but Juan doesn't realize this.” This will be another interesting twist, like when she discovered that her mother’s new partner (whom Paula herself found in the first place) was Monica’s cousin.
“Sorry, Marely fans, looks like Paula and Juan are going to end up together.” Drat.
“Paula decides to go look for Cesar Luis (I guess we knew that was coming).” Yep. Like Ana, though, my first thought was that he’s sent these “feds” to shake her out.
“Juanito and Flor continue their gentle flirtation and reassurance while Topete mocks them in the background. Could we hate this skanky guy any more?!” Nope. You said it all. Personally, I'm waiting for Flor, Juanito and all the bullies to decide Topete doesn't suit them and then let him have it as a group, united in a common cause.
Alirio’s exit from jail was pretty spectacular. Made for some belly laughs at my house, not just from the jail director.
“Stormin' Norman Yadira is digging out the real reason Kike was fired” LOL! Yep, she’s well qualified to rip someone a new one.
Hooray for Kike for setting Topete up for jealousy with such flair!
I left a comment on Friday’s just a short time ago, if anyone is interested. In case you don’t all look, though, I want to acknowledge Maricruz’s spectacular job of recapping and her graciousness in taking over for me so many weeks. There will likely be a few more before it’s over but I can start recapping more now, too.
Jeanne
We're always happy to meet more Juan fanatics.
Can't imagine where that will lead, but there are sure to be lots more complications before this baby wraps up.
Keel-hauler, you've been busy girl! We know you're with us heart and soul so don't worry.
