Friday, May 2. Juan Q Where we see different ways to prepare for a job interview

Hi everybody, I’m substituting once more for Jeanne, I’m sorry for the delay. As always we start with a little rehash from last Thursday. This has been copied from Sylvia’s recap.

Nidia and Lorenzo are still on their stupid date when Nidia remembers she has to go home right away, it's time to eat and nobody knows where she is. Lorenzo gives her his phone number and kisses her hand. (Oh my, do we suppose that this number will be discovered at an inopportune moment?)Fer goes to Juan's office and divulges that none other than Marely was asking for details on Juan's mystery woman. Juan is impressed. His little rose garden is jealous! No no no, Fernando corrects him. Marely is neither jealous nor a gossip. Fer suspects that someone is behind Marely pulling the strings and that someone is Paula. Juan smiles broadly, aha!!Juan goes to Paula's office and he's holding a red folder. He preens and tells her he had an absolutely delicious lunch. The snails were exquisite and the company divine. Paula snaps back that she's busy, what does he want?Juan reveals that he has another applicant for the VP job. She is a Very Dear Friend so will Paula accept the resume? Paula opens the folder and is muy impactada at the name. "Laura Berrocal is your friend?" she asks, dismayed and put-out.

Today’s show

Paula is very upset; she can’t believe Juan could be helping Laura after all she did to her. Juan asks her to calm down and explain to him what happened. Paula tells him that Laura befriended her mother just to spy on her. Juan asks her if maybe she is confusing her with somebody else. Paula yells that she is sure it is the same one and adds that she won’t accept her application. This makes Juan mad; they fight about Sandro and Laura’s application. –You accepted CL twin’s application “por tus pistolas” (just because you wanted to. Lit for your guns), and now I’m accepting Laura’s application “por mis pistolas” –Are you challenging me? --No you are challenging me (This sounds so much like the arguments mi kids have “you touched me. –No you touched me. –No you touched me first…”) Finally Juan tries to reason with Paula. –If I take Laura’s application is not to upset you, is because I owe her a favor, can you understand that? –Is Laura the mysterious woman? Juan just looks mysterious and doesn’t answer.

Angarita goes to the Chachon residence. He finds Nidia just outside of the house. He tells Nidia that he wants to talk to her. Nidia says that she doesn’t want to talk to him. Anga says he is trying to help her and she is being rude. Nidia says that she doesn’t need his help –aren’t you looking for a job? Nidia says yes. –Well I’m coming to offer you a job. Cara impactada de Nidia.

Juan is back in his office talking to Fer. Fer wants to know what happened because he looks really bad. Juan explains that Paula got very upset when he asked her to take Laura’s application, because Paula hates her and he didn’t know. Fer tells Juan that he is concerned that Juan has another candidate for the Job. Juan tells him no to worry, Fer has all the advantages, because he knows the company and he is young. Fer is not too sure.

Nidia has recovered nicely from her initial surprise. She tells Anga that she is very upset and she won’t forgive him just because he is offering a job. Anga reminds her that she needs the money and he is not going to beg her to work for him. Nidia takes a softer line and asks him what she would be doing. Anga tells her that he needs a secretary. –Isn’t Yadira doing that? Anga tells her that Yadira helps by visiting the clients and doing the accounting. Kike does the delivery and remolacha is not efficient at answering the phones. He needs somebody to helping with the phones and taking care of the warehouse. Nidia gets excited and accepts. Right then Delirio shows up, he is very upset. Nidia tells him to go inside the house. Delirio refuses and calls Angarita names. Nidia explains to him that Anga came to offer her a job and that she has accepted. As of tomorrow she is working in the Market Place.

Paula is talking to Marely in her office; she is fuming and tells her that Juan is always trying to impose his will. Marely tells her to calm down, what could be so bad that she is in such a state. Paula tells her that Juan had the gall to ask her to consider his lover’s application for the most important job in Farrell. Marely is impactada, and tells Paula that they (Marely and Paula) can’t allow it. Paula tells her that Juan doesn’t care and he said that he was going to call her any way. Marely wants to know who the mysterious woman is. Paula tells her that is Laura, Monica’s cousin, the one that spied on Ana and her.

Delirio and Nidia are still arguing. Delirio tells her that his decision of not letting her work at the Market is irrevocable. He won’t let her work with that “vedulero” (This is a term that means person that sells vegetables, but is also used as an insult meaning that you are somebody without an education) Anga answers that he rather be a “verdulero” that a “mantenido” (This is one of the worst insults a Mexican man can receive, it means a man whose wife works and supports him, it is up there with “mandilon” a man that does everything his wife tells him including cooking and taking care of the kids). They keep on insulting each other. Finally Delirio tells him that he is Nidia’s husband and Nidia doesn’t take decisions on her own “no se manda sola” (she is not her own master). Anga tells him that he doesn’t have to talk to Delirio anymore. He talks to Nidia and tells her that if she wants the job, she knows where to find him and leaves. Delirio promises that Nidia will never take Anga’s job; however, Nidia tells Delirio in no uncertain terms that she is taking the job.

At Farrell, Juan calls Laura. Laura asks if he was able to turn in her curriculum. Juan tells her that yes; she has an interview for tomorrow morning. Laura is very excited and tells him that she is going to study because she wants to make him proud. Juan tells her that Paula was very upset when he asked her to accept the curriculum. Laura says that she knows because they had a problem long time ago, but she says she doesn’t care. They say goodbye with the promise that they’ll see each other tomorrow in the interview.

Pastor arrives at Ana’s house and talks to Yvonne. He asks how is Yvonne doing and Yvonne tells him all about Fernando’s proposal. Pastor tells her to take care and make her decision soon or she might lose him. Yvonne wants Pastor to stay a little longer but he says that he wants to go home to study for the interview. Yvonne tells him not to compete against Fernando. Pastor tells her that he is sorry but that’s the position he has been waiting for and he is the best one for the job and this might be his last chance.

Juanito comes out of Juan’s office and goes straight to Marely’s desk. He pushes Paula out of the way says excuse me and then ignores her. He shows Marely a drawing that he made. It is the drawing of Juan, Juanito and Marely and their house. He asks sweetly if she wants to come home with them. Marely tells him that his Daddy hasn’t asked her. Juanito turns around and asks his dad to ask her. Juan asks and she accepts. They all leave. Paula and Juan just look at each other.

I think some how they stopped at Lorenzo’s house but I don’t know what they did to Marely. Anyway, Juanito tells Lorenzo that they miss him at school and that they are misbehaving to provoke the other teacher’s resignation. Lorenzo tells him to stop it; he should be a good kid and concentrate in his studies. Juanito tells him not to lose hope. They’ll drive the other teacher out. Lorenzo tells them that he is already looking for another job. Juanito says that he’ll go to the car (I guess Marely stayed there). When they are alone Juan asks if Doña Pepita is back. Lorenzo says that she is not and he is not going to beg her to come back.

At the Cachon residence Delirio has been trying to rope the rest of the clan’s help to stop Nidia. Yadira doesn’t understand what the problem is. Finally Delirio tells them that Nidia has accepted a job with “el verdulero” Yadira is very impactada and goes straight to Nidia’s room. Yadira asks Nidia if it is true that she is going to work with Anga. She says yes and Anga is going to pay her very handsomely. Yadira tells her that of course he is paying her a lot because he is in love with her. Nidia says that he offered her a deal that she couldn’t resist. Yadira tells her to think about it because it is affecting Delirio. Nidia tells her that she knows what she is doing and she won’t change her mind.

Juan, Marely and Juanito arrive at the Cachon residence and join Delirio’s pity party. Delirio tells them that Nidia took the job. Marely goes to Nidia’s room and asks her about it. Nidia tells her that she is afraid, but Marely tells her not to be afraid, working is not hard and the first thing she has to do is to find out what is her job description. Nidia tells her that Anga told her that she was going to be answering the phones. Marely tells her that she is sure the position involves more that just answering the phone. She tells her a few more things that she might have to do. Nidia doesn’t like it and asks if she is going to get paid more for doing all of that. Marely doesn’t think so.

Pastor is coaching Anga in how to behave with Nidia. He tells him to be firm and to show her that he is in charge. Anga tells him that he’ll show her who is boss. Pastor’s phone rings, it is Heriberto, he is coming by tonight. Pastor is very excited.

At the Cachon residence, Juanito is telling Juan that Marely looked like she was very upset at Juan. Juanito tells him that he doesn’t like it when they are upset. Downstairs Marely asks Kike if the mysterious woman is in fact Laura. Kike tells her that he doesn’t know and Marely gets upset and leaves. Juan comes down the stairs and asks Kike what is the problem with Marely. Kike tells him that Marely was asking about Laura.

Heriberto arrives at Anga’s house. Pastor is very excited and opens the door. Heriberto thanks Pastor for receiving him so late and for helping him study for the interview. Anga shows up and tells Pastor that his house is not a “congal” (according to the urban dictionary Congal can mean a house or a strip club or a whore house) Pastor looks offended.

Yvonne is trying to help set the table. Paula tells her to sit down, she shouldn’t be up. Yvonnes says that she doesn’t like to just sit around and wait to be served. Ana and Willy arrive and Willy tells Paula that he invited himself to dinner; Paula’s says that there is no problem. Yvonne tells Paula that she didn’t know that Ana had a boyfriend. Paula just smiles.

At the Cachon residence, Juan enters Marely’s room without knocking. He is very upset and yells at her. He tells her to stop meddling in his life. Marely tells him that she doesn’t care what he does with his personal life and to leave her room. Juan tells her that he just wanted to tell her to stop asking questions about Laura and to stop snooping in behalf of other people. Marely is furious. Juan leaves the room and thought bubbles that he needed to put his Rosita Jardinera in her place.

Anga and Pastor are having a similar conversation. Pastor tells Anga that he offended them and Heriberto doesn’t deserve it because Heriberto is not his “amiguito” Little friend but his “amigo” friend and he came to the house to talk about work. Anga apologizes, but he tells him that the line between being friends and more than friends is a very thin one. Pastor asks him what would be the problem if he wants to cross that line, he has the same rights as Angarita to love and have relationships. Anga acknowledges this however he tells him that he wouldn’t like to find them playing “pipis y gañas” in the living room. (I know pipis y gañas is a popular game, but I don’t know how it is play; however in this case Anga used it as to say that he wouldn’t want to find his brother making out in their living room)
Pastor looks disgusted and can only call his brother a vulgar “verdulero”

At Ana’s house Paula asks Willy if he appreciates her mother. Ana almost chokes and tells Paula to stop talking and to eat. She asks if somebody else wants more chicken. Willy says he’ll have more. Yvonne complements Ana’s cooking skills; she calls her an artist of the kitchen.

Pastor is back with Heriberto. Heriberto tells him that he needs his help for tomorrow’s interview, because he doesn’t understand all the big words people uses in Farrell. Pastor tells him that he is conflicted, on the one side he wants to help him; on the other he wants the position for himself. Heriberto understands and tries to leave. Pastor tells him that they could make a pact of mutual help. They promise to help each other tonight and tomorrow if either one wins the other won’t have hard feelings.

Nidia goes to Juan’s room she asks his help in making Delirio understand. Juan tells her that Delirio will understand eventually. Nidia asks also about the mysterious woman. Juan doesn’t want to give too many details. Nidia tells him that she wants to meet her because she wants to make sure that she is a good girl. Juan says that he’ll bring her to the house one of these days. Nidia tells him that she would be very happy to meet her. She leaves the room and Juan wishes her good luck on her new job. Juan thought bubbles that Lorenzo and Pepita have a better chance of reconciliation if Nidia is busy.

Paula goes to her mother’s room and comments that Willy is very nice and she is suspecting that the compliments that he gave to the food were more directed to the chef. Paula tells Ana to stop pretending that there is nothing between Willy and her. Ana finally recognizes that she is falling in love with Willy and that she is afraid. Paula tells her not to worry about it and kisses her good night.

At the Cachon residence, Juan, alone in his room is thinking about Sandro and his real motives for wanting to work at Farrell. He doesn’t understand why Sandro would want to work if he is rich now, but Juan decides he is not going to think about that right now, he wants to relax and tells to himself that he should think on something nice. Of course the images that come to his mind are of the times he spent with his Palomita. We hear the “Hay amor” theme in the background.

While he is dreaming of his Palomita, we are treated to a series of images of all the candidates and their respective background music theme and how they are getting ready for the interview. Fernando is studying, Laura is looking for the perfect power suit and Pastor is trying to teach Heriberto basic math.

The next day arrives and CL is transforming himself into Sandro. Sandro tells him not to blame him if people realize that he is CL. CL tells him not to worry, the people at Farrell are very dim and for them CL is dead. They won’t notice a thing, besides he is enjoying this too much and Sandro is ruining the moment with his worries. Sandro tells him that he hopes this moment doesn’t turn into a bad time. CL tells him again not to worry. He’ll enjoy being in the same room with the two that are responsible for his down fall.

The End.

Maricruz, I haven't had time to read this but I am thanking you for graciously stepping in for me again! I can't wait to read later today!

Jeanne

Hi Maricruz and others,

I am completely tied up with work today and will not be able to read Maricruz's recap until late tonight, darn it! I haven't even seen Friday's episode yet. But thanks so much Maricruz and I'll "talk" to y'all later.

Maricruz, I love your recap and as always the interesting insights into cultural terms. It sounds like the insult to a macho guy using "mantenido" is similar to a "kept man" that we might say here.

About the only thing amusing on this overly long show is the funny insults being slung from character to character these days. It is also interesting to see the different alliances forming between certain characters, like Marely and Paula against Laura. Pastor and Heri are getting closer but with protests from Angarita and who knows what the working environment will turn into at the market with Nidia and Yadira working for Anga. Neither of them seem too disposed toward working hard and he is all about working hard.

I'll reread this before I do my recap tonight, I'm off to finish my Mexican Literature homework. We are reading Augustín Yáñez. Unfortunately, I don't think he was related to our Eduardo of Destilando and Fuego/Sangre fame. HA!

Thanks for the recap, Maricruz!

Maybe Augustín Yáñez is a distant, distant relative of our Eduardo.

I shudder to think of Pastor trying to teach Heri math! Has anyone at Farrell considered Heri for a job as a driver?

OK, I just had to tear myself away from work and treat myself to your recap. I do enjoy the acting, lots of good stuff, but all this filler is wearing me down. WHO CARES about the Laura plotline? Who is making these decisions? WHO CARES about the Pomposos? Thank you for letting me rant.

Oh my, I can only imagine the pandemonium that Nidia will cause if she works at the marketplace. But how dare Delirio forbid her to work anywhere? Doesn't he know her enough by now to realize that telling her not to do something will never work. Silly man.

OK, gotta dash, more later.

Thank you all for your nice comments. I apologize for not been able to post earlier. I try and try to have the discipline to sit at the computer right away on Friday (because I know I won't be able to do it on Saturday) but I can't and always end up doing it on Sunday. Anyway, yes the insults are funny and I also felt mad when Delirio told Nidia that she "no se manda sola". I’m not sure if this is just delirious Delirio trying to control Nidia or something that normally happens in Mexico. I have never asked my relatives that still live in Mexico if their husbands have that kind of power over them. Can a husband tell an employer that he doesn't want his wife to work? Is it legal? I wonder.

So Laura and her role in the plot .... I have a feeling that she will make things difficult for Juan like no one else can. I would like to think the Pomposos would serve some sort of purpose, but maybe I'm being to hopeful!

Maricruz, you are awesome and so is your recap! (You are awesome for graciously stepping in for me so often during this very strange spring). Thanks for the vocabulary, cultural information that is so enriching to us, and just for the delightful recap!

“The snails were exquisite and the company divine” LOL! Juan can’t even stand lobster—how funny that he’s telling Paula this tall tale about snails!

“Cara impactada de Nidia.” This made me chuckle AND I am tickled to know how you would say it in Spanish, so thanks for this!

“Laura is very excited and tells him that she is going to study because she wants to make him proud.” She has not clue how much power Paula has over Juan.

“Nidia says that he offered her a deal that she couldn’t resist. Yadira tells her to think about it because it is affecting Delirio” Yadira is on shaky ground—she who left Kike to live with Topete!

“Pastor asks him what would be the problem if he wants to cross that line, he has the same rights as Angarita to love and have relationships.” Poor Pastor, when will he ever learn to read the other guy’s signals right?

“Ana finally recognizes that she is falling in love with Willy and that she is afraid. Paula tells her not to worry about it and kisses her good night.” Hooray, maybe Ana will FINALLY have an authentic love relationship that doesn’t need to be hidden!

“While he is dreaming of his Palomita, we are treated to a series of images of all the candidates and their respective background music theme and how they are getting ready for the interview. Fernando is studying, Laura is looking for the perfect power suit and Pastor is trying to teach Heriberto basic math.” LOLOL!!! I can just picture how amusing this was with each one approaching from his/her perspective!!

Jeanne

Thanks again Maricruz, this was another of your stellar recaps. I think I will have to use "Cara impactada", it's such a great way of saying it!
