Guapos Wednesday 5/14/08 The first shoe drops on two happy lovers

This is probably the most important episode of Guapos yet, and I don't know if I can do it justice in a hurry, as I promised to substitute today. There is almost not a single funny moment. Connie has been cranked up to 150 on the rat-bastard meter.

SONETO XLVIII By Pablo Neruda 1959

nacen y mueren muchas veces mientras viven,
tienen la eternidad de la naturaleza.

This poem, which I Googled, will feature in the episode later.

Here is a bad Google translation.
I don't really want to try to translate the poetry.

Karla summons Braulio for Luci. Luci wants him to make Mili disappear. Braulio says that will never happen. Regina will protect her always--Regina has adopted Mili. Luci says that Regina has gone crazy. Brau says that Mili will not know the truth about Connie, but Mili will still bear the name of Belmonte. Luci does not believe him, but he shows her a picture of his sister. He says that unlike you, she had all her dreams destroyed. She didn't have a father who bought her a husband. Brau seems to know the truth about Alex, but I don't remember how. Anybody?

Luci talks to Rosario's picture: I hate you, Rosario.

Alex is lying in bed the night before his wedding. He gets up and takes a book, whose title we can't see, and he begins reading aloud. It is the above poem, which I decided to google, since I figured it must be well known. Who would have thunk that Alex had a literary streak? Mili is seen waiting for the morning, as if the two souls are together.

In the morning, Luci has donned a babushka and sunglasses. Connie asks her why she's wearing the disguise. Well, she's got a wedding to stop!
Anyway, Connie comments that Nestor can't be coming that early for the shoe-shopping expedition. Luci tells him that his mother has gone crazy and adopted Mili. She does not reveal that she knows the truth about Mili. She's your little sister! Connie is impactado.

Mili packs for the wedding. The girls give her a new blue bracelet for the old saying. Her something borrowed will be Valeria's dress. They were wearing their blue uniforms, so I first thought they were going to give her those . . .

Brau brings breakfast to Granny, who wonders where Mili is. Has she forgotten to kiss me good morning already. Brau puts her off by talking about the detective. He says he had an altercation with Luci, and Connie is planning something against Mili. They must prevent any harm to Mili.

Connie comes in and sends Braulio out. He thunders at Regina: Mom are you crazy?

Luci follow the Hummer carrying Alex and Mili. Alex and Mili sweet talk in the car. She is nervous and so is he. Isn't it bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other before the wedding?

Back to Connie. He asks Granny how she could commit the stupidity of adopting "that servant." Oh, Connie, you are going to pay! Granny says it's for the girl's wellbeing and for her own happiness. She has rights to make Mili her daughter.

Mili and Alex arrive at the church and meet with Padre Cosmo. I suppose it's also bad luck to have a priest named after a drink made popular on Sex and the City. Mili says this is her best gol. She goes to change. She says to Alex: Don't disappear. He buys all the flowers from a flower stall outside the church.

Luci sneaks in behind Alex's back. That kerchief made her absolutely invisible!

Back to Connie and Granny. He says she's lost her mind. How could she have done this behind his back. She says since when does she need his permission. Granny says that she is his mother, and he should respect her. He says everything was better when she was locked in her room. He should have put her in the manicomio years ago. Connie, you're already up to 150: Want to try for 300? He says she's become a big obstacle. She says if you do anything to Mili, I'll . . . Collapse. Yes, Granny collapses. Call 911 or whatever they have in Mexico.

Mili looks at her dress and we hear the music of doom.
One of the best scenes I have ever witnessed unfolds. It is hard to believe that Alison Lloz is only 15. This performance is outstanding, and Luci was great too. Luci is combining evil with her sick protective love for her son.

Luci comes in. She says that Mili can't marry Alex. Mili still thinks she's saying this because of class differences. No, you don't understand, Luci says. You can't marry him because you're the bastard daughter of my husband! Mili looks sick. Luci shows her a picture of pregnant Rosario. Mili pulls out her own picture. She says that Rosario looked so happy in the picture.

Luci says "see why you can't marry Alex?" He's my brother, Mili says, looking sicker.

Back home, Connie calls for an ambulance, and they try to give Granny a nitroglycerine tablet.

Back at the church, Mili asks why they didn't tell her sooner, so all this wouldn't have happened. What will she do with all the tainted grand love she has? Luci tells her that Connie doesn't know any of this, and Mili can't tell him. She should keep the secret for Alex's sake, so Alex doesn't find out the sickening brother/sister truth. Mili flashes back and realizes that she heard Regina speak of Rosario, and she could have figured out the story long ago if she had known her mother's name. (continuity goof? Didn't Mili know the name? Remember that weird gravestone scene?) Mili goes crazy with grief and rage. (I just checked back. On March 7, Mili had a conversation with Braulio where she seemed to know her mother's name was Rosario.)

Luci says that Alex will be back any minute: Don't let him suffer. Go away, far away. If you love him, make the sacrifice. Mili agrees, and Luci kisses her forehead in exhausted relief. Mili is stricken. What was extraordinary in this scene was to watch Mili as the sickening truth sunk in and she knew she had to accept Luci's tortured logic.

Comic relief: Val and Bim/Bo are doing leg extensions at the gym and they joke about Morgan. Val is obsessed and can think of nothing but Morgan. Just like when you're on a diet and you are not to have chocolate, but the only thing you think about is chocolate.

Alex is waiting by the altar. Padre Cosmo jokes that Mili must be nervous. Once he had a bride that had stomach problems and spent a half hour in the bathroom. Alex says puh-leeze! He runs out to look for Mili.

Mili has run away. She is flashing back on that scene with Granny and the scene where she hugged Connie in the library and said she'd be his pretend daughter.
She cries to an absent Connie: I hate you, I hate you!

Alex comes back and tells Padre Cosmo that Mili is gone. He believes it's not nerves, but something has happened to her. He drives around in the Hummer yelling "Miligros" out the window, like a campaign truck. She spots him and hides.

Meanwhile, Mat is meeting with his abuelo. Abuelo says he's sorry he kept the money from him. He didn't want Mat to take the wrong path (look how well that worked). He will now release his mother's inheritance. But he begs him to behave properly. Trust me, says our little Eddie Haskell.

Val comes back from the gym and has a cute scene with Morgan. But they are interrupted by Damien telling them about granny. They all rush to the hospital.

Flor complains to her sister about Alex. She seems to have dyed her hair black for her mourning state. Still has a nose stud. Sis tries to persuade her to forget that bum. Let's go to the Greek isles!

Luci comes home in her disguise. Karla tells her about Granny, and she rushes to the hospital.

Val calls Alex. He answers the cell, is that you, Mili? Huh, asks Val? It's me, Valeria. Anyway, she tells him about Granny and he also rushes to the hospital.

We see Granny getting an operation. In the waiting room, Val and Morgan sneak a hug. Connie interrupts them and wants to banish Morgan to the parking lot. Val courageously stands up with at least a half truth. Morgan was only comforting her, and she wants him to say. Connie agrees, but he tells Morgan to stay away from Val.

Mili has made her way over to the orphanage. She sees Sr. Cachete and says she feels like dying. She started the day so well, but all has gone to hell.

Luci arrives at the hospital. Still no info about Granny. Alex arrives, and he asks for Mili!

The doctor comes out: no info till tomorrow's episode.

Mili breaks in on Padre's planning session for the communion ceremony. Mili says she knows all, Connie is her father. Yes, that's truth says Padre. You mean you knew, she gasps in horror: Freeze, end episode.

Avances, Mili shows up at the hospital and glares defiantly at Connie.

NinaK: Thanks - excellent recap.

I'd have to agree - the scene between Mili and Luci (lying through her teeth) was beautiful. Mili now knows part of the truth about her parentage, but so many of the characters are hiding little bits of it, too.

Alex presented himself as a very sympathetic character in this episode. He appeared to be very in love with Mili and must have been since he was willing to go against the wishes of his family to marry her. Of course, we know that they are not related by blood, and it may be that only Luci, Consti and Nestor know this. Consti is dead set against the relationship because he wants Alex to hook up with Florencia the psycho - presumably to increase his own power and wealth. Luci is just plain mean and is setting herself up to receive a big anvil. Soon, I hope. Nestor is still a question mark. Is he still as much in love with Luci now that he knows she concealed Alex's birth from him?

From lower Ala

Another vote for Allysn being an incredibly gifted actress especially at such a young age. She broke my heart in the scene with loose lips Luci and then again with the padre. She still has a couple of more ghastly shocks to hit, learning Braulio is her tio and that Regina is ill. Look out Connie because she is going to rip into you like a wild cat - rat-bastard that you are.

Luci let connie know a while ago that she knew Mili was his bastarda. They had one of those you hurt mine and I'll hurt yours snit fits. However at this point she is way ahead on the I'll make yours suffer scale.

I wonder ig mili will tell Alex why she ran off or if someone else will. i don't want him thinking she is as flighty as he tends to be. You just know that the
mafia princess is going to move in for the kill ASAP.

As much as I feel like clocking Connie for his attitude to Mili, lately and to Regina I can not wish enough evil karma to hit Luci. She has reached incredible levels of novelaland cruelty in her treatment of a young girl. Just wait until Al finds out what a piece of trash his adored mother is. Then she'll pay and i can hardly wait.

Great show last night and recap! I haven't been watching lately, no time. But, have been keeping up with the recaps. I just started recording the shows again this week and saw the show last night.

Padre Manuel knows that Alex isn't her brother, but she might not give him a chance to talk. I think she'll be hurt mostly that PM and Gloves didn't tell her the truth. But I can't wait to see her confront Connie.

Thank you for the excellent recap of this hot hot hot episode!

I agree that Allison (Mili) did a stunning job. Hello premio! In fact, it was so intense that I was worried that such a young girl would have to conjure up those emotions to do the scene.

Re: the graveyard – I don’t think there’s a name on the tomb. Maybe just “mama”

Comments:

It’s very odd that nobody seems to know exactly what the surgery is that Regina is undergoing.

Vale’s ears stick out!

The puppet looks like Mortimer Snerd.

The photo of Alex that was on the dresser in Braulio’s room wasn’t there last night.

Mili and Luci’s faces were so close together that it almost looked like they were going to kiss. I bet neither actress could see the other in sharp focus at that short range.

Regina know that Al isn't Connie's son, and I think she would tell Mili, but we'll see whether she gets the chance. I thought Braulio knew, but maybe I just think that because he seems to know all the secrets of the family. Andrea knows both secrets, and Damien knows Al is Nestor's son now. So, basically, a whole lot of people know that Mili and Al aren't related, yet undoubtedly for twisted reasons they are going to keep them both miserable as long as possible. That's not a spoiler or anything, just a guess because this show has a lot of episodes left.

I thought Constancio had the best line of the night on Tuesday when Braulio told him that the detective said Mili's uncle is dead..."That's too bad, Braulio. Rest in peace." I was laughing for a long time.

Ugh, Florencia and Mateo. The fact that we are still seeing them, and not even in scenes with the main cast, portends nothing good.

I don't think Mili knew her mother's name before--I thought the grave was unnamed because she died before saying anything to the nuns. Also, I think that when Braulio first discovered his sister's picture in Mili's Bible, he said "Rosario", but when Mili said "who?" he covered up by saying that they should say a rosary for her.

Correct - Mili didn't know her mother's name and the gravestone did just say Mama. Actually if I remember right Connie said that it should say mama that it didn't originally say anything.

Unless Mili says something about the aborted wedding Regina wouldn't say anything and the rest all have their own reasons for keeping still. I think Braulio knows the truth about Al but I don't think he wants him for Mili so he will keep still and be just another person keeping something from her. Padre Manuel can't say anything because I think Luci told him in confidence. Poor Mili so much misery lies ahead. This reminds me of the great novela Maria Jose with the same problem although fewer people knew the mother's big lie.

Everyone, thanks for clearing up the references to Rosario's name. I think I was reading too much into those past episodes, therefore thinking Mili actually knew the name.

The big mystery to me in this is how Mili came up with the story in the first place that her mother died of a broken heart because Mili’s father had abandoned her. If the mother said nothing at the convent, not even her own name, and then just died in childbirth, how could Mili know her circumstances?

p.s. thank you NinaK for including the poem!

I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. I really did. I am changing my title, because the correct translation of dichoso is "happy."

I have been waiting for this moment when Mili knows that Consti is her dad. I knew it was coming.
What I want to know, but no one know probably except someone that already saw the series, will this be the time that Regina doesn't survive and dies. I hope not. She needs to know and spend sometime with Mili as her granddaughter. She (Regina) needs to put her two cents or a whole dollar into ripping her son up too for knowing along that Mili was his daughter and conceal this info from his mother who has been looking for her long-lost granddaughter.
Also, I want Mili to ripped up Consti and do something to him that hurts him. Maybe scratch out his eys or hair or something.
I WILL BE WATCHING TONIGHT.

Thanks for the recap and the Neruda poem NinaK =)

I actually don't think Connie knows that Luci knows Mili's his illegitimate bambina. She had the "you hurt mine I'll hurt yours" tiff with Braulio. She knows that Connie knows about Mili, but hasn't said anything to him, just Braulio. This is all clear as mud, which is why it's so easy to loose track of who knows what.

Braulio knows Al isn't Connie's (though not that his dad is Nestor the molester instead of French Frank) because he was already on staff at Casa Belmonte when Luci married Connie and brought little Alex (who was probably 3 or 4 by then) along. This is why Mili is younger than Al, even though Rosario was already pregnant when Connie broke up with her. Val was probably conceived shortly thereafter, and is probably about 6 months or so younger than Mili. None of the rest of the current staff where around back then.

I don't think Brau will tell Mili about Al unless he is truly convinced they are in love. Dunno if that will happen.

I think the theory of mommy dying of a broken heart might have actually been originated by some nuns because Rosario looked so sad and seemed to have lost the will to live, with the not talking and barely eating and such. She held on until the baby was born - which the nuns thought was a miracle given mom's condition, hence the name "Milagros" - and pretty much let go right then and there. It's the kind of story that gets passed on for so long that people believe it. They probably assumed that she lost the will to live when the man she loved abandoned her (not a strange occurrence when 18-year-olds get pregnant) and drew their own conclusions.

A tiny issue I have (not that I'm big on letting the facts get in the way of a good story) is the fact that these weddings are being arranged left and right without any talk of pre-cana! Roman Catholics love their classes, and pre-marital counseling is no exception. These classes can vary from a weekend to a whole year (depending on how many topics, tests, etc the local bishops require). It was already a stretch that they might have squeezed them in with Val and Mili's respective weddings being planned in one and two months a piece, but overnight???!!! This isn't the sort of thing most priests would go for; especially considering it wasn't that long ago the bride almost walked down the aisle with another groom. I'll get off my soapbox now and back to my suspension of disbelief 'cause I actually do like this TN.

Margarite. Now Connie does know that Luci knows mili is his. They have had several conversations when she refers to mili has his bastarda. In addition there was a scene when she was ranting and he told her that mili had his mother's protection and now she also had his.
