Guapos Friday 6/13/08 Val's a prisoner of love; Mili's a prisoner of hate; Damien is someone's bee-atch on Cellblock D

Sorry, Beckster, but your man Damien is going to be out of circulation for a while. I'm sure he'll wriggle his ears out of his predicament soon enough.

Rehash: At the start of the episode, Connie has brought Rocky in for a man-to-man talk. Rocky is nervous, but he stands up to Connie.

Nestor comes in and discusses the DNA test with Luci. Al overhears and they tell him Luci is sick.

Mili is tearfully telling Hugo how she doesn't want to be the witness at the wedding--she's going to cry like an idiot. We know this is tragic because they start playing the tinkly piano theme from Amar Sin Limites.
(This reminds me of a documentary I saw on director Billy Wilder the other day. They asked him why he kept using the song "Isn't It Romantic?" in a lot of his movies. He said something about the studio's owning the rights to the song, so they didn't have to pay--they were cheap. Did you know that he was born in Poland of Jewish parents, but supposedly his mother named him Billy after Billy the Kid. She had once visited the U.S. when she was younger. If you haven't seen The Major and the Minor, The Apartment, Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Stalag 17, Double Indemnity, and Sunset Boulevard, run, don't walk, to your Netflix queue. I'm not a fan of Some Like It Hot, however, which many consider his masterpiece. The Seven Year Itch is okay. But I digress.)

Anyway, Hugo promises to stay with Mili and take care of her. He's becoming too nice. He even looks better. Is it for real?

Connie asks Rocky why he's ruining Val's life if he loves her. What can he offer her? How long will she stand the miserable life he offers? He offers a deal. If Morgan lets her go to Paris for two years, and she meets other people of her type, and if after two years she's still in love with Morgan he gives his word she can marry him. (I have to wonder why Connie is so careful about Val's marriage this time. Morgan is a lot better than that bigamist he was happy to let her marry a just a few short weeks ago. Well, the writers of this show must have Alzheimer's, the way they forget plot points. Another plot black hole: Hugo hated Al because he thought Al was responsible for the death of his girlfriend. Is that over?)

Braulio sneaks in some food to Val. He suggests she forget Rocky. She says she's surprised to hear his advice, as she thought he understood her. What would she do with all the love she has inside. No, he tells her, at your age you'll forget soon. Val asks Braulio to leave her alone, and she cries.

Connie continues coopting Morgan. Val must really believe Morgan is dumping her for the plan to work. Rocky accepts the plan. Perfecto, Connie says in his best Evorian growl. He has poured two drinks. He says he sees a man in front of him and offers a toast with Morgan, but Morgan says he doesn't drink. Connie tells him he can come back as the chauffeur. In fact, it will better pave the way for their plan to work.

Val is writing a love letter in her room. (No, she is not using a pink feathered pen like Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.) She writes that she will never forget Morgan, no one else has made her so happy. Why was she born rich and he born poor. She will always love him. "Your Vale." Isn't it funny that Val has an English-language copy of Marie Claire on her desk?

Mili and Al are talking awkwardly in the hall. They sit down on the floor. She does not want to be his witness, she's afraid she's going to scream in front of everyone. Al reassures her. They touch hands, and it looks like the hands in the Sistine Chapel. (That is really high-class cinematography. How did they think of it?) Anyway, they rehash again how he is going far away, and they will miss each other, etc. She asks him if he has finished that other thing he was helping her with, and he says it's all arranged.

Nestor and Luci are at the hospital. He opens the letter and sees negative results. Luci asks him to leave Alex alone now. Let them get on with their lives. (I notice as someone pointed out a couple of days ago that there is a scene of Luci and Nestor in the credits now, so this can't be the end.) Nestor leaves in disgust. A nurse asks Luci if she's all right, and she says no, she just sacrificed her last chance for happiness. (Well, she did that a long time ago, when she became a lying, scheming BSC drunk.)

Connie is gloating to Andrea in the office that it's the best day of his life--he got rid of the chauffeur. Andrea tries to get him to help Damien get out of prison. Connie reveals that he's on to her part in the scheme to take the money from the Cayman Islands. Next time she betrays him, he will kill her. No, better, he will disfigure her, as that will hurt her more. I'm glad he is finally wise to her, but why is he keeping her around? I guess he is hewing to the keep your enemies closer theory.

Speaking of the Devil, Damien is in the prison and he's trying to get involved in some deal involving sports bets. I could not really understand whether he was trying to offer money to pay off the goons to leave him alone, or what. He wants to meet with the boss. A really huge guy named Mono comes over and says they have to talk. Damien grins foolishly. Is this where they ask him to put on a dress? We don't know yet, 'cause they cut to another scene.

Yolanda is at the church with Padre M waiting for Gloria. Gloria sits down, and Yolanda proposes that they all live together: Gamuza, Gloria and Yolanda, in one happy family. Gloria rejects the idea, saying she's too old now, and besides she has her job and she lives elsewhere. She seems to be giving a knee-jerk reaction, as if maybe she would like the idea but can't bring herself to admit it.

Back at the prison, Damien is proposing something, and the big guy says he likes Damien's business vision.

Connie is talking to Hugo about Damien. I don't get this part, because why isn't Connie going to punish Hugo for his part in the money stealing? The phone rings, and it's Damien calling to beg Connie to get him out of jail--he was surrounded in the bathroom but he was only saved by one of the bosses. Glad you're making friends, Connie says, but no I'm not getting you out. Sleep with your mouth open? (Did I get that right?) Connie reveals to Hugo that he has hired Mono to watch over Damien, but he didn't reveal it to Damien?

They are interrupted by the arrival of Connie's corrupt detective.

Gloria is sitting on a bench feeling melancholy and thinking about what her mother said. She seems to regret her rejection. Chalupa comes over and asks why she is so sad. She says she so much wants a family and to be loved. He kisses her and hugs her and says he is always there for her. It is really kind of sweet--he is not his usual jokey self.

As we leave that scene, Yolanda is knocked down by a hit-and-run driver. Her head looks pretty bloody. Is it curtains for Yolanda?

Back at the mansion, Rocky and Horacio are in the kitchen telling the staff they're back on the job. Everyone except Karla is pleased. They reveal that Damien is in prison. Just then, Val comes in and Rocky kisses her. He says that he can see his plan is not going to work . . .

Connie's detective reveals his big discovery that Mili's father is dead. Mili feigns surprise and concern. Connie says he's so sorry for her, but isn't it good to know now, and her father was probably a cretin, etc., but they know he's dead . . . just then Alex pops in and says "no he isn't" and produces his own detective. This is the detective that I hired, 'cause Granny made me promise before she died. Throughout all this, Mili is making funny faces whenever Connie turns his back. This is obviously the plot that Alex and Mili were cooking up earlier.

Back out to the garden, where Rocky is smooching with Val, and Horacio is hiding his face behind a small bunch of leaves. Val wants Rocky to take her someplace romantic for more smooching. Rocky isn't making any headway with his plans. Horacio tells him not to be a crazy idiot (menso)--he's ruining everything. Rocky says he's having too much fun being with his chiquita. Something tells me the boys are going to be out on their ear again.

In the study, Connie is disparaging Al's detective--some people will do anything for money, he says. On the other hand, his detective can be trusted. Mili says, no, she trusts Al's detective, and she wants to hear what he says. Tell me, where is my father? Dramatic pause while a flustered Connie tries to figure out what to do. Okay, he finally relents, we'll hear what he has to say, but first I have to speak to him alone. Got it!

The others leave the room. Then Mili and Al burst out laughing. Did you see his face? they say. They figure that Connie is trying to buy off the detective. They now turn a bit serious. Mili says Connie has never had the pants to accept she was his daughter. He's a cerdo (pig) and a cochino (also pig) para jugar (seems to be some kind of soccer term), he's a fonero (don't know) who should be thrown out with a tarjeta roja (red ticket) (soccer penalty lingo). Al says shh. it's not worth it. He's for confronting Connie, but Mili says not yet, he must suffer some more for what he did to her mother.

Braulio now comes in ready to introduce Gamuza's father. This is part II of the scheme, apparently, to pass him off as the father of Mili. I think all this is pretty funny, and it's sweet the way Al and Mili are playing together and with Braulio. It's nice that Al can now be in on the relationship with Uncle Brau. Brau prepares for the showdown with a sinister prediction: There Will Be Blood.

A few more threads to cover in this action-packed episode: Nestor is confiding in Padre M. He learned the test results are negative, and now there's nothing to keep him there. Alex is not his son. Tell me it's not so, says Padre M. Geez, can't he smell a rat where Luci is concerned? Just then, Sor Cachete rushes in to tell them there's been a tragedy (obviously referring to the car acccident).

Back at the mansion, we finally get the grand entrace of Senor Gamuza's Dad. Daughter! Papa! Finally! Connie stares, and my DVR cuts off. Hasta lunes!

I'd have to go back and look at the tape...maybe he did say "boca abierta", but I guess I understood "boca arriba" which would be sleep on your back(or face up).... Which would make sense if someone had evil designs on him.

Interesting catch about the hands being like those on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel...I didn't think of that connection at all.

Thanks for the recap Ninak and all the funny comments.... and have a good weekend.

Another great recap, and thanks all for your answers to my query about Palabra de Muher. To answer your question, JudyB, I've been writing for soaps for about 13 years. Wrote for prime time before that, but one day I found myself a single mom (well, that's my own telanovela ;-)) and I wanted a saner schedule and to live in NYC. Daytime TV was the answer. It's great to enjoy telanovelas as a fan! But I swear I couldn't do it without you guys.

I caught the Sistine Chapel thing too and thought they did a nice job showing how much the two of them are suffering. I loved the bit with them laughing over faking out Connie but I also thought he looked upset when Mili took to her"daddy" so easily. I swear I think he was jealous.

I didn't have one scintilla of pity for Luci when she said she had lost her only chance for happiness. She asked for it and I think much worse is headed her way when Al finds out what a cold hearted witch she is.

Gloria did seem torn but she is stubborn so maybe the accident to Yolanda will loosen her up and she will step up to take care of her little brother.

Looks like skanky Andrea isn't going to get aay with all the stuff she has pulled since it seams Connie doesn't always think with his little head where she is concerned.

Shelly, No matter what most people say I think some of the best writing and acting on TV these days is in daytime. The Sonny/Carly/Michael story on GH is absolutely riveting and the true payoff for all the violence that has gone before.

Howdy =)

Thanks for the awesome recap NinaK! Your DVR cut off before the previews: It's Al's wedding day, and he tells Luci he won't blame her, he won't judge her, he won't hold it against her, but he needs to know if he's his father's son. How this BSC beeyotch can lie to her own kid after such a request ('cause we all know she will) is beyond me. Then again, asking if he was his father's son is not a very clear question. I mean, of course he's his father's son, otherwise he wouldn't be his father. Now if he'd asked if he was CONNIE'S son, that would be a horse of a different color...

In response to NinaK's questions:
1) I don't think Connie actually plans to allow Rocky to marry Val. He's banking on her meeting someone new in Paris and forgetting the guy. He's probably pleased with himself for making Rocky carve his own grave, not realizing it will never work. I do agree that his logic is totally screwed up since he was ok with his daughter marrying a shady politician (who we later found out was married) and can't get over her wanting to marry a nice guy just 'cause he has no money. He's again missing the golden opportunity of appearing as a man of the people who is more concerned with the happiness of his children than increasing the family fortune. If Rocky's smart, he will tell Val about Connie's plan. Then again, he's not that bright and they haven't been very successful at hiding so far...
2) Hugo stopped blaming Al for Carmen's dead after he read her diary and found out she seduced Al (not that Al, was blameless, but she really worked on him for a while before he finally caved). To blame Al for giving in to Carmen, which led to them getting caught and causing Damian to drink too much and drive drunk killing mom and Carmen is just too far a stretch. He wanted to hurt Al for taking Mili from him, but now that he's got her all is forgiven.
3) Much as I'd like Nestor to stick around, I wouldn't count on it considering how long Bobby's parent remained on the credits after they left the show.
4) It looks like Damian was working on some kind of a gambling ring. He got caught by one of the gang leaders (Mono) and backpedaled by offering Mono the bulk of the profits in exchange for protection. He then explains to Mono how much money there is to be made in the prison.
5) It's possible Connie wants to keep his enemy (Andrea) close, but I think mostly he just wants to keep sleeping with her and enjoys knowing she'll stay out of fear. He is a sick puppy.
6) I suspect Connie said nothing to Damian about Mono because he wants him to suffer for a while. One's less likely to suffer if they're not genuinely afraid someone's gonna make them their beeyotch in the shower.
7) Connie won't be punishing Hugo since he can't be blamed for dad's shady dealings. Furthermore, he was kind enough not to warn Damian so Connie could get even with him.

JudyB, I think Connie did say "boca arriba."

Hubby and I are starting to figure out what we'll do after cable goes digital. Quick question for you guys: Among Tivo and DVRs, is it possible to get them to record certain time periods rather than certain shows? Some of these shows (esp on Telemundo) fall outside the hours that are found in the TV listings. Also, can you get these DVRs to not look for stuff for you? My biggest fear with Tivo is that it will record a bunch of junk I could care less about and I'll have to scroll through it to get to what I actually want to watch. Any info would be appreciated.

Hugs,
M

Thanks, everyone, for your fill-ins.

I did figure out that Connie had no intention of letting Rocky marry Val, but I'm not sure that Rocky knows it yet. Maybe he will figure it out and tell Val.

That bit about Hugo's reading the diary now vaguely comes back to me. What would we do without the collective memory of the team?

I did write in my notes "boca arriba," and I just mistranslated as "mouth open," so thanks again.

I'm so impressed you write for daytime soaps, Shelly. I used to be a magazine writer/editor, but I have only written non-fiction. Being able to write something fictional is a very special gift.

Now I write legal briefs. Maybe some people would call my legal briefs a fiction. Ha Ha, I made my own lawyer joke.

Margarita, as for the DVRs and TIVOs, I have no experience with TIVO. I have the DVR that we get from the cable company for a small monthly fee. If something goes wrong with it, they replace it for free. I understand TIVO works similarly, but it has that function you mention where it searches for things. You can probably turn that off.

Once you enjoy the convenience of recording a show for months at a time (like a novela) without having to program, you will love it. In the words of Ron Popeil: Set it and forget it!

As for the shows running over, here's how that works: Some channels have made known that the programs run over, so the DVR knows to record longer. You can see that on the program menu.

On Univision you need a different method. The shows run off the hour, but the cable company doesn't "know" that, so the menu doesn't indicate it. However, since you know, you can set the DVR to record extra minutes. That is easier than the old VCR method of setting exact time. You can just say "record Guapos every day and let it run five minutes over." You CAN set exact times, by the way, but once you see how easy it is to just record a particular show by menu, you will not bother!

If you are also recording the next show on the schedule, that method won't work, as the machine thinks you are trying to record two things at the same time on the same channel. You have to watch the overlap on the recording of the next show. E.g., I am currently watching Fuego on and off, so I set it to record every day, and most days I look at the Guapos overlap even if I don't watch Fuego. I did not do that today. (I don't bother recording the Fuego overlap.)

Another thing to guide your choice: Recording capacity. The TIVOs apparently offer more hours of recording space, and remember that HD programs take up more room on the recorder. If you want to save a gazillion hours of stuff, you might want a TIVO. I hope this rant makes sense to you.

Wow Shelly...whether prime time or daytime soaps, you are in a high-pressure business.

I have the greatest respect for anyone who can manage to raise a family without the help of someone else...hope your kids have a chance to appreciate how wonderful you are (which they will when they have their own children).

NinaK...loved your "lawyer joke". At one time I was a reporter and there are a lot of people who consider that fiction writing also.

We do all see the world from our own perspective and we put our unique spin on it. The police detectives I talked to always laughed about the gazillion different ways crime witnesses described the alleged perpetrator. "Eye of the beholder" and all that.

test comment. There Will Be Blood

test comment. Please bear with me as I try to figure out how to do the links in the comments section. Above I copied and pasted from the main text. I think I will use that shortcut in future rather than try to type in html language.

NinaK, thanks for your DVR info. I don't know that I'll need to keep hours of programming (I'm a believer in watch it and dump it) but am glad I can tell it to not record unless I tell it.

I know from Amazon wish lists and gift guides how easy it is for "technology" to think it knows what you'll like and be completely wrong. I laughed when I tried to get to my husband's wish list and it sent me to his "recommended" list. I can assure you, my husband had no desire to own a copy of "Heartbreakers" with Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt. In the words of Weird Al "I saw Will and Grace one time, one day, I wish I hadn't; 'cause TIVO now thinks I'm gay..."

Now it's just the issue of not being able to record multiple things at once. Luckily, Telemundo and ABC both air a lot of stuff on the web... Or I could just stop watching so much TV ;)

Shelly, during my time on the dentist chair I caught a little bit of OLTL and thought of you. Did you guys add a princess to the script to attract Telenovela watchers? Just kidding ;)

For the record, I can vouch for the effectiveness of using TV to learn a foreign language. People are often shocked that being born in Mexico (with my K-6th education there) and partially raised in Texas I have no distinguishable accent. I tell them it's because Cliff was the only character in "Cheers" that had one. I did in fact learn how to speak English from watching cartoons, sitcoms, etc. For all my mother's berating the evils of television (and as a TV addict I'm well aware of how much time can be wasted on it) even she has to admit we were never closer than when we sat on the couch watching "MacGiver." I did take two summer classes as a child to insure I could spell and beef up my vocabulary. But thanks to watching television, I had a better grasp of sentence structure than people twice my age (my second summer I was 9 and at least 7 years younger than the next kid in my class). By the time we moved to the US full-time (I grew up on the border, so I often spent the night "out of the country" visiting family) I was able to go straight into the 7th grade without having to repeat a grade or take ESL classes. Heck, I was number 4 in class ;) Okay, now I'm just bragging. Seriously though, I think the folks on this board can attest that for most people, it's easier to learn a language when you can hear it repeatedly. Sitting in a classroom will only take you so far.

Margarita, from one TV addict to another, the new DVR owner is tempted to record everything, and then there's no time to watch it all. You end up with a hard drive crammed full of unwatched programming. Then you have to dump some to make room for new programs. I used to record more movies, but now I use Netflix.

You CAN record two things at once, by the way--you just can't trick the machine into recording two things at once on the same channel. You can record one thing and watch another. You can also record two at once and watch a third show on your pre-recorded list.

But you can't record two things and switch to a third live channel for watching. Usually, I only watch pre-recorded shows, because I am spoiled about fast forwarding through commercials.

Oh, yeah, the other good thing is that you can pause live TV to go to the bathroom or get a snack. The way the machines work is they are always "recording" whatever your live channel is, so you can pause and rewind up to an hour even if you haven't recorded the show onto your hard drive.

For my money the best thing I ever did was get DVR. The thrill of being able to just say tape Guapos and never have to go back and set it up like my old VCR is a joy plus the ability to tape two things at once. Whoa that made life easier but you do have to find time to watch all you tape. I'm sorta addicted to House Hunters and have to remind myself every couple of days to go though and watch and delete. My cable company said I would get 20 hours of taping but I think I'm getting closer to 30 which is a God send since I'll be going to Spain for two weeks in August and need to get Guapos, GH, and some of the Olympics. I may even have to press the old VCR into action. Then when will I have time to watch it all. LOL

Hhhm... so I could tell it to tape Guapos and LT while I watch PdG, but not to tape Guapos while I watch Ugly Betty... I'll have to keep that in mind...

I discovered that I can hook up the new TV to my laptop (sort of like a computer monitor) and watch the YouTube episodes of what I missed in a decent size. Haven't figured out how though, and hubby has warned me that the resolution might not be the greatest, so I might be better off watching the little two-inch window on the computer. I don't rent enough movies to warrant Netflix, but I know that you can download movie off the web for a fee that will become corrupt after 24 hours or so (to insure you don't do that instead of actually buying them) and that I actually find tempting. Ever since Blockbuster started carrying mostly new releases (they want you to order everything else like Netflix) I can never find old movies when I get a hankering for them, though I can occasionally find them at the library. This makes me feel a little better 'cause the $2 per day they charge actually goes to a good cause - you know, maintaining my local library ;)

We've discussed that once we have kids, we should probably stop trying to eat in front of the TV and start having dinner as a family. Then we can watch the shows later on the DVR as God intended...

Margarita, I'm confused: what's LT? You can record both Guapos and Ugly Betty at the same time. But then you can't watch a third live show at the same time.

sleeping "boca arriba" means sleeping on your back and not on your stomach, meaning keep your buttocks on the mattresss not in the air!

NinaK - that you so much for this great recap with all the detail! I wasn't able to watch this episode, so it's very much appreciated.

In other news, it looks like our Univision station in L.A. has its captions back. Whew!

oops - make that "thank you"!!

I would think that Nestor will be back, even if he disappears for awhile...we're pretty sure Luci faked the test and Nestor is really Al's dad, so at some point that will come out, right? Of course, if Nestor was in any way smart at all, he would have gotten a sample of Al's DNA himself. Or at least PM should have questioned the test. But then we would miss out on months of deceit and shenanigans.

Mili and Al's plot was really funny. I thought Constancio was going to blow a fuse when, after Mili previously raging about how much she hated her father, upon "actually meeting him" she acted so happy.

Julia I also thought Connie was none to pleased with Mili and faux daddy which made it even funnier.

It occurs to me with so many writer commenting on this show that most of us would do something's differently. Most of us know that the best villain's always have to have some redeeming quality. In this one for all his faults Damian does appear to genuinely love Hugo. Connie may be a cold hearted jerk but he clearly cares about Vale and Mili.

Now Andrea is questionable since she seems driven by greed and a desire to marry Connie and live the good life. Flo is a psycho so there is little or no hope for her because she will lie and scheme and get Daddy to do her dirty work.

Then there is Queen Luci who as best as I can see has virtually no good qualities at all. She cheated in school, she cheated on Francois in Paris with Nestor, she married to save her reputation then cheated on Connie with Bobby's dad and Nestor, she lied to Al his entire life, she ignores Val, she treats the servants like something smelly that she stepped in on the street and her treatment of Mili is beyond terrible. Since redemption is an underlying theme of most novelas it will be very interesting to see if they can do it with her or she will join all other really bad novela characters - in a grave.

Decie, I agree with your analysis.

Connie had me at the first time he hugged Mili after he learned he was her father. I know he has his bad side, but he demonstrates something good that keeps us watching. Luci has yet to do that.
