La Traición, Fri, June 27 - Grand finale
So this it, folks. All things considered, they wrapped it up better than I thought they could in one hour. It’s been my privilege and pleasure to recap this novella. As I have said, I intend to go back and do recaps of the early episodes. If anyone wants to be notified when one is posted, send your email address to: jmbickal@yahoo.com and I’ll let you know.
Soledad gives Dr. Dan his ring back. She says that she has caused him great pain and asks him to forgive her. Dr. Dan says that he sensed that he was losing her. He asked what caused her to make this decision? Soledad says that she doesn’t want him to feel that way because of her. Dr. Dan says that for two years he ran away from love and lived like a hermit. He felt that way until the day Soledad came into his life. She lit up his life and now her words have left him in the dark again. Soledad says that she is just an ordinary woman with faults. She doesn’t deserve to be thought of that way. Dr. Dan says that she is the woman of his dreams and he loves her. Soledad thanks him for all his feelings and for all that he has done for her and her family but she can’t lie to herself, she can’t deceive herself. She says that she needs to tell him that she has always loved Hugo. Dr. Dan struggles to be able to speak. He says that he always knew that Hugo’s part of the story hadn’t ended yet. He asks if Soledad knows why he didn’t leave her. He says that it was because deep down he hoped that one day she would love him a little bit. Soledad says that she does love him. He is her friend and the love she feels for him is very special. “I know that I have lost you,” says Dr. Dan, “and I have to let you go away from me.” He embraces her and says that at least he has always has her smile and that is something that no one can take away from him. Soledad thanks Dr. Dan for understanding and says that she wishes she could return his feelings but it’s too late for her. The day she met Hugo she gave her heart to him forever. Dr. Dan asks her forgiveness too for not telling her he was divorced. Soledad says that is not necessary. It is all in the past. Dr. Dan has to live in the present now and be happy. “No,” says Dr. Dan, “I just lost the woman of my dreams and I don’t know how to get her out of my heart.” Soledad tells not to do it then. There will always be a very important place in her heart for him. She leaves. “Goodbye Soledad,” says Dr. Dan, “goodbye forever. I hope you are very happy.”
At the cabaret, Eloisa tells Paquito that Manuela is Dr. Dan’s wife brought to town by Alcides to discredit Dr. Dan with Soledad. She says that the plan failed when Hugo unmasked her. Paquito says that he knew she was wicked (‘una fiera,’ literally, ‘a wild beast’). Paquito says that compared to Manuela, Eloisa is a sweet dove (‘una dulce paloma’).
Manrique comes to talk to ‘George’ when she is on break. He congratulates her on the magnificent way she plays. He introduces himself and we find out that Manrique’s first name is ‘Elias.’ He tells Antonia that he wanted to take piano lessons from her but he understands that isn’t possible. He says that he has found someone else to give him lessons or at least he hope so – Antonia de Obragon. He says that he has had problems with her family but he likes her. He says that she is a woman of strong character, like him but a completely a lady. He tells ‘George’ that he finds Antonia very attractive. ‘George’ looks at Manrique like he is crazy.
At Arturo’s house, Gladis walks in and sees Arturo’s stump. “Santo Cielo!” she exclaims, “What happened to your hand?”
Manuela goes up to Paquito and asks him if she isn’t what he needs for his cabaret. Paquito says that he likes what he saw. “Then pay me,” says Manuela. Paquito puts some money in her cleavage as an advance. She leaves with Paquito gazing after her open mouthed. Eloisa comes over and closes his mouth. She tells him that she doesn’t like Manuela. She has a bad feeling about her and thinks that Paquito shouldn’t have hired her. Paquito says he thinks Eloisa is jealous. Eloisa denies it.
Arturo says that now Gladis knows about his shame. This is why he will never get married. His medals and his family name don’t matter because he is a monster. Gladis asks how this terrible thing happened. Arturo says that Alcides chained him up in a cabin full of gunpowder and he had to cut off his hand to escape. Gladis asks why Alcides did this. Arturo says that Alcides knew that Arturo wanted to kill him. Arturo wanted to take vengeance on Alcides because he killed his sister Beatriz. Gladis looks like she is having a heart attack. Arturo says again that Alcides de Medina killed Beatriz. It’s too much for Gladis. She says that it isn’t true. Beatriz is alive and will return very soon. Arturo tells Gladis again that Alcides killed Beatriz and she isn’t coming back. Gladis screams in denial and now she has lost her mind. She repeats over and over that Beatriz is coming back and she will wait for her.
At the cabaret, Paquito is paying the staff. Eloisa is tired and wants to go home. Paquito says that they have to talk. He asks her what she said to Alcides because Paquito thinks Eloisa touched his heart. Eloisa says that Alcides is not doing well. She says that Paquito doesn’t know the horrible things that Alcides went through. Things she wouldn’t wish on her worst enemy. Paquito tells her not to exaggerate. Eloisa says that in addition, if Alcides keeps up his obsession with Soledad, it will end very badly.
Alcides is dozing in a chair at the Hacienda. “Alcides,” says Soledad, coming into the room. He sits up, “I knew you were looking for me,” she says. Alcides asks Soledad how it went with his brother. Soledad says that she only went to see Hugo to clear her thoughts. She tells Alcides that she has made a decision. “What is it?” asks Alcides smiling at her. “I want to be yours,” says Soledad. She says that she has been thinking about it a lot and Alcides is the man for her. Alcides puts Soledad in his lap and says that she is the love of his life. They start to kiss and suddenly Alcides sees in the mirror that he is alone, holding nothing. It was a dream, a fantasy. In a fury, he throws a bottle and breaks the mirror. Reality hits him like a physical blow. “I’ve lost her, (‘la perdí)” he says, “If she’s forgiven Hugo, I’ve lost her.” He chokes back tears, “I’ve lost her.” Then he gets calmer and speaks to himself in the third person, “Just a minute, Alcides, just a minute. If she isn’t for you, then no one can have her.”
Ursula tells Soledad that she saw Boris and Marina naked in bed. Ursula says that Boris betrayed her. Soledad says that it seems very strange. Boris has always been a very honest person. She suggests that it could have been Marina trying to keep Ursula and Boris apart. Soledad says that Marina is capable of anything. Ursula say that she would like to thing that Marina was behind the whole thing but she has doubts. Ursula says that she can’t believe Boris. She can’t. Soledad hugs her and says that tomorrow they will go to the Hacienda and confront Marina. She will have to tell the truth.
The next morning Arturo is looking for his mother. He finds her in a chair, dead. There is a bottle of some powder by her chair. She has killed herself. (She changed out of her nightgown into a black dress to kill herself.) “What have you done, Mother?” asks Arturo. He kisses her forehead. “Alcides de Medina, I swear your time has come. I swear it.” (We can start the body count: one down. Although she didn’t kill anyone, Gladis knew what her son was up to. She was a nasty piece of work.)
Paquito is stacking up money in his office. He tells himself that he is a genius and very soon he will be rich and Eloisa will marry him. The door opens to the judge and two policemen. The judge tells Paquito that Deborah’s body has been found. The judge says that he understands that Deborah worked for Paquito. Paquito flashes back to finding her body. The judge says that she had a wound in the neck in the shape of a hook. Paquito says nervously that he doesn’t know anything about it. The judge tells him not to be nervous. He isn’t being accused – yet. The judge notices a hand peeking out from under a sheet. Apparently, Paquito didn’t check his office for dead bodies before he started counting his money. The judge pulls back the sheet to reveal Manuela’s body with the same kind of wound in the neck. Paquito desperately says that Manuela just came to town and he just hired her… The judge orders Paquito arrested for the two murders. He is taken out protesting. (That the last we see of Paquito – two down.)
Alcides tells Hercu-less to prepare everything as he as instructed. He says that there is not time to lose. Herc starts to object. “No buts, (‘no hay peros que valgan,’ literally, ‘there are no ‘buts’ that are worth anything.’)” says Alcides holding Herc by the neck with his cane, “this is your most important mission for me.” Alcides tells Herc to go and he goes. Eloisa comes in asks why he sent for her so early. Alcides tells her to go to the treasure vault and get all the gold and jewels she can carry. She asks what she will say? “Eloisa!” yells Alcides, “do what I tell you and don’t ask questions.” Eloisa say that she recognizes his expression and asks him not to do anything crazy. Alcides tells her to be back in an hour or he’ll cut her head off.
We hear Soledad calling Alcides from downstairs. Alcides tells Eloisa to go without letting Soledad see her. Soledad comes in with Ursula and the baby. Alcides smiles and says that this is a nice surprise. He wasn’t expecting her. Soledad says that they are looking for Marina. Alcides asks why. Soledad says that Marina laid a trap for Boris to make Ursula think that they were still together. Alcides replies that that is completely false. Marina and Hercu-less have been lovers since Marina came back to the house. Ursula gives a sigh of relief.
A: Soledad, no one can touch you here, not your family, not your employees, not your living, not your dead. No one can lay a finger on you (‘nadie te puede tocar ni con el pétalo de una rosa,’ literally, ‘no one can touch you even with a rose petal'). (Soledad and Ursula look at Alcides like he has lost his mind.) (to Ursula) Don’t worry, I’ll see to it that Marina gets what she deserves.
S: Fine. If you’re taking care of it, I’ll be going.
A: Soledad wait. I have something very important to tell you. (he smiles) You’re leaving this house, of course you are, but you’re leaving with me.
Hercu-less says good morning to Margot. She slaps him and asks where he was the previous night – with that slut? Herc says that he slept in the hotel because he wanted her to calm down. Herc says that he is there to say goodbye. He’s leaving with his boss. He says that Alcides has gone mad and is going to kidnap Soledad. Margot says that Herc will go to jail or be killed. Herc says that he doesn’t have an alternative. If he betrays Alcides the way he did with Arturo, he will be a dead man.
In his house, Arturo gets his gun out.
At the Hacienda-
A: Please don’t be upset. Eloisa will be here any moment.
S: Eloisa? Why Eloisa?
A: You’ll know soon enough.
S: We’d better leave.
A: Soledad, the only way you can leave her without me is if I’m dead.
S: What? Alcides.
A: Soledad, you got engaged to my brother, Hugo. You finally told him yes.
S: Hugo told you?
A: No, no, he didn’t tell me. I found out on my own.
Hugo (in a spiffy red jacket) tells Boris in the forge that he didn’t know that making swords could be so profitable. He counts how much the collector paid him. Boris says that the collector ordered more. He tells Hugo that he deserves it after all his hard work. Hugo says that Boris has worked hard too. Margot calls to Hugo (for whatever reason, this was obviously shot when the actors weren’t in the same place). She tells him that Hercu-less told her that Alcides is planning to kidnap Soledad. They are at the Hacienda. She says that Alcides plans to take her away from San Marino by force. She begs Hugo to save Soledad and her Herc. “Let’s go,” says Hugo to Boris.
Marina comes in to see Arturo. He asks what she is doing there. She says that Alcides threw her out of his house like a dog. She has come to offer information in exchange for money. Arturo tells her to tell him all she knows. Marina says that Alcides is leaving the Hacienda with Soledad. He has kidnapped Soledad. Arturo asks how she knows this. Marina says that Hercu-less told her. “Excellent,” says Arturo, “the whole family will be there together.” Marina asks to be paid. Arturo asks her to wait a minute and he will pay her well. Marina says that she hopes he will be generous. Arturo opens a drawer and there is a hook, a la Captain Hook. (Arturo must have taken the one from Dr. Max that he initially refused or gotten another from someplace.) Marina says that the information she gave Arturo is very valuable. Marina is looking around. She notices Gladis and asks what is wrong with Arturo’s mother. Arturo (holding his hook behind him) says that his mother is dead. “It the fate of everyone,” he says, “to die. By the way, here is your payment.” He stabs Marina with the hook simultaneously flashing back to killing Deborah and Manuela. “Now it is your turn, Alcides.” (Three down.)
Eloisa has come to the Obragon house and tells Antonia that she wants to see Soledad. Antonia says that Soledad, Ursula and the baby went out. Eloisa says that she will wait for Soledad in her room. Antonia starts to ask why when the guard comes to say that Elias Manrique has come to see Antonia. Antonia tells Eloisa to wait and goes to see Manrique. Eloisa goes right inside the house.
Manrique says to Antonia that he is a man of few words. He has come to insist that she accept his offer to teach him to play the piano. (Cut to Eloisa going into Soledad’s room and opening the door to the treasure vault.) Antonia tells Manrique that she has only heard bad things about him. Manrique says that he isn’t proud of what he did. He regrets it and want to make it up to the family, especially Antonia. Antonia says that she isn’t interested and turns away. Manrique says that he won’t bother her for very long. He has a terminal illness and not much time left. He begs Antonia to fulfill at least half of his wish and teach him to play the piano.
At the Hacienda-
S: Alcides, Please. Let us go.
A: Soledad. Be patient. We’ll leave soon.
Hercu-less comes in and says that everything is ready. The coach is waiting.
A: You see. Now all we have to do is wait for Eloisa and we can leave.
S: Eloisa will go to the police. You know that she is my friend.
A: Money is her only friend, my love.
S: Alcides, you’re not well. Please, calm down. Let us go.
A: My brother always gets the best part (We see Hugo coming up the stairs, gun in hand.) This time he won’t.
Alcides simultaneously shoots the guns out of Hugo’s and Boris’ hands.
S: You’ve killed him!
H: You’ve gone crazy!
A: Don’t worry, my love. I have the world’s best aim (all those watermelons didn’t die in vain!) (to Hugo) One more move like that and I’ll forget you are my little brother.
H: You can’t take Soledad. Not with me here.
A: Who said I was taking her?
H: I knew you would do something crazy when you found out that Soledad and I had reconciled.
A: (to Hercu-less) What are you waiting for? Tie them up, stupid. (to Soledad) You’re dressed as Snow White (she’s actually wearing pink but Alcides has gone crazy so maybe he’s seeing things) You are more beautiful than ever. (He holsters his guns.) Eloisa won’t be long.
Eloisa is stuffing a bag with treasure. She says that she has to hurry before that witch Antonia finds her. She finds the tiara and says that this time she is taking it with her. She sees Michelle’s sword and picks it up. “Poor (stupid) thing,” she says, “to think that you are buried down here.” She says that she has to hurry. She puts the sword down and in doing so, she cuts a trip wire and is shot by an arrow.
At the Hacienda-
A: Eloisa is taking too long. We’d better go. We’ll come back for Eloisa. Let go.
S: No. I’m not moving from here.
A: (talking like a little boy) My love, let’s go. Soledad, what do you call a person who is capable of killing his own brother? A fratricide?
S: No, please don’t.
A: Let’s go.
Hercu-less goes to where Hugo and Boris are tied up. (Hugo either knows that it is useless to argue with his brother or we don’t have time for that.) Herc tells Hugo that the knot he tied can easily be undone and he leaves Hugo’s gun with him. Alcides says that it is time to go and Herc says that he is just making sure that Hugo and Boris can’t escape.
Antonia says that she agrees to teach Manrique to play the piano. Manrique thanks her and says that she doesn’t know what this means to him. Antonia says that she does know. Dr. Dan appears. Manrique leaves. Ester comes running out and says that someone is in Soledad’s room calling for help and the door is locked.
Eloisa has made it back to Soledad’s room with an arrow in her stomach. She manages to break the arrow off. She tries to close the door to the treasure vault but at that moment, Dr. Dan and Ester break in. Ester, Antonia and Lucas ask where the heck that door came from while Dr. Dan tends to Eloisa.
E: Daniel. Don’t let me die.
DD: What happened?
E: (gasping) Stupid Michelle …
DD: Michelle?
E: Michelle is down there…
DD: Michelle is down there?
E: She got her revenge. Daniel, don’t let me die…
DD: Calm down.
E: Don’t let me… (she dies)
Dr. Dan says that Eloisa is dead. Everyone is impactados. Lucas says that they have to inform the authorities.
(Four down)
Alcides, Soledad, Ursula, the blanket named Aurora and Hercu-less are outside the Hacienda.
S: Alcides, please, listen to me. You are acting very strangely. You’re not yourself.
A: Soledad. Life is strange. Death is strange. Love, it’s all strange. Please, get in (the carriage).
S: No. I’m not going anywhere. I’m not leaving with you. I love Hugo. I’ve always loved him. You can’t make me.
A: Of course I can.
S: Then you’ll have to kill me because I’m not leaving with you (‘con tigo no me voy.’).
Alcides tosses Herc his cane. He smiles very strangely and kisses Soledad. She slaps him. He grabs her and kisses her by force.
A: You are mine. You are mine and no one else’s. You are mine.
Arturo come up, “Alcides!” he yells. Alcides pushes Soledad away and tells her to take cover. Arturo shoots Alcides and then Hercu-less. He shoots Alcides again and Alcides falls to the ground. The baby is crying. “I hope you rot in hell, Alcides de Medina,” says Arturo. He turns to Soledad, “Now it’s your turn, Soledad. It’s nothing personal but you and your daughter must pay.” Ursula begs him not to do it. They are innocent. Arturo raises his gun and he is shot in the chest by Hugo who is standing behind him. Arturo turns towards Hugo and Boris who just stand there while Arturo raises his gun again. This enables Alcides to get his guns out from underneath him (he was lying on his back) and shoot Arturo several times. (Five down)
Hugo comes over to Soledad and asks if she is all right. “He killed your brother, Alcides,” says Soledad. Hugo kneels beside Alcides. “You won again,” he says, “You won the last battle.” Hugo takes his hand. Alcides calls Soledad. “I’ve always loved you,” he says, “Always,” He kisses her. “My only sin was to have loved you.” He dies. Hugo leans over and closes his eyes. “He was shot in the heart,” he says, his eyes full of tears. (Six down, I guess)
Ursula interrupts to say that something is wrong with Aurora. She thinks the shots frightened her. Hugo says that she is very cold. She needs to go to the chamber. They run into the house leaving Arturo and Alcides dead (and presumably Hercu-less) dead on the ground.
In the treasure vault, Ester asks how it is possible that such a treasure could have been under their house. Lucas says that it has to be Jeremias’ treasure. The judge is there too. Dr. Dan is holding Michelle’s sword. He tells the judge that he knows this sword. It is Michelle’s and he has bad feeling about that. An officer says that they found a will in one of the chests in which Jeremias leaves all his fortune to Soledad. Impactados looks all around. Boris comes running in and says that Aurora is very ill.
At the Hacienda, Soledad asks that nothing bad happen to her baby. Hugo is operating the thermal chamber. “Nothing bad will happen to our daughter. It’s just that this time she has had a very serious attack. It was too much pressure: the gun shots, the screaming.” Soledad says that she must live. Dr. Dan arrives. Hugo says that baby vital signs are very weak. Soledad begs them to save her. Dr. Dan says that there is only one thing left to do. He says that a blood transfusion is the only thing that can save the baby. Hugo says then let’s do it. His daughter must be saved. Dr. Dan says that it is risky. Since he hasn’t had time to finish his tests, if Hugo and the baby’s blood aren’t compatible they could both die. “Do it, Doctor,” says Hugo, “I will do whatever it takes to save my daughter. I am ready to take the risk.” Dr. Dan says that he needs Soledad’s authorization as well. Soledad asks what their chances are. Dr. Dan says that he won’t know the results until the transfusions are over.
Five years later. Soledad is on the steps of the Hacienda reading a letter she has written:
Dear Daniel:
It’s been five years since you left San Marino and your letter brought back such memories. I am very glad you know that you are married and happy with your wife. I am pleased that you decided to name your daughter, Soledad, after me. Here in San Marino, many things have happened. For example, Boris and Ursula got married and have two precious babies. In addition, Boris and Hugo are world famous for the swords they make. Margot bought the tavern and runs it with Hercu-less. Their latest show is doing very well. My father finally recovered. Mother and father forgave each other and spend their time writing love letters to each other. It’s a way of showing how much they love each other. They finally made their peace with Hugo and they get along very well. Every year we visit Michelle’s grave in her city. We remember her with great affection. It was terrible for us to find out that she had died at the hands of Alcides. We gave Jeremias’ fortune to charity in the city. You can’t imagine how big a hospital we have now with lots of doctors. I didn’t deserve that inheritance since I’m not Jeremias’ daughter. With respect to my daughter, Aurora, she is so big and pretty and she loves her father. I am very happy.
Hugo comes down the stairs of the Hacienda with Aurora as a little girl. He kisses another baby.
H: Our life couldn’t be any better. Our daughter was finally cured. Huguito was born healthy. We love each other.
S: Our dreams are a reality. I love you.
H: And I love you. I love you.
They kiss.
Fin.

For me, a better ending would've been for alcides and arturo to kill each other in a duel with pistols and have gladys caught in the cross-fire. then the sugar sweet ending with Hugo, Soledad and their two kids would've been even more perfect.

I do wish he hadn’t died, but I suppose it was necessary. At least he told Soledad to get out of the way before getting shot, and he saved Hugo from being shot by Arturo. So he redeemed himself in that way.
At the beginning of the show, it was taking so long for Soledad to dump Dr. Dan that I didn’t see how they could tie up the rest of the loose ends. I kept glancing up at the clock trying to gauge it all out! And then at the end, when Aurora still needed her blood transfusion and there were only two minutes left, I was about ready to jump out of my seat. But of course the letter to Dr. Dan five years in the future explained it all. And they had another baby—a boy! How sweet.
Well, all I can say is there were a lot of deaths! Lol. I wish Eloisa hadn’t died; as Paquito said, compared to Manuela she was an angel. And speaking of Paquito, are we to assume he spent the rest of his days rotting in jail? Or that he was hung?
I think the finale was pretty good. I still feel cheated out of a big reconciliation scene with Soledad and Hugo, rather than just a few words and a short stock footage love scene. And I still don’t get the earring thing. But La Traicion has been a great experience, really fun and exciting to watch. Thank you again for your recaps, Jean! I will be sending you an email.
I also agree that the final was actually quite a bit better than I expected. I got the little epilogue ending I was hoping for, so that was nice. I'm still shocked that we never did get a wedding or more importantly, a reconciliation dialogue between Hugo & Soledad. Those omissions strike me as real abberations from regular novela form, but establishing new patterns isn't necessarily a bad thing, either. I do feel a little cheated about the lack of reconciliation scene, though. We had all been waiting so long to hear those words from Soledad!
I had a couple moments of unexpected impact during the show. When Alcides' woke from his dream and was groping empty air, my skin literally crawled. He was so pathetic to me in that moment that it surprised me. Also, when Eloisa tripped the crossbow, I actually gasped. I think I was so sure she would die some other way because the treasure room just seemed too obvious. Obvious, maybe, but also entirely appropriate.
I almost cheered when Hugo showed up in his red jacket. He hadn't been seen in the red jacket since the early part of the show; it was such a confirmation that he was truly his old self again. "Red Jacket Hugo" is BACK!!! YAY! Consequently, I was a little bummed when he & Boris ended up tied up at the hacienda, but then I remembered the lesson we learned long ago: No villians in this show can tie a proper knot, ESPECIALLY Hercules!!!! ;-)
I also got a big giggle out of Boris showing up in the treasure room, which was already quite full of visitors by the time he arrived. He didn't seem to bat an eye at all the moolah. And how convenient of Alcides' to just leave the copy of Jeremias' will lying around to explain the existence of all the booty. Too funny.
Thanks again, Jean, for enabling us to come together on this wild ride. It was truly a pleasure & privilege to meet & dish with all of you. Hope to see many of you on the PdG board in the days to come. Adios!
I hate to be the only fly in the ointment but, i was very disappointed in the entire last week of this show. After all of the chemistry between Mario and Dana what happened? Were they disappointed that the novela ended so poorly? The magic seemed to be gone! At the end I expected Hugo to go to Soledad and his daughter and embrace them but he went to Alcides side. Could they have at least held each other for comfort when they had to put Aurora in the chamber? How about not being so stiff in the final scene? After all these characters went through to have each other it seemed very bland and banal.
I feel cheated out of a decent ending especially after they wasted so much time in the middle with long silences and irrelevant story twists. I am sorry for venting but if this is the best that Telemundo can produce I don't think I'll be revisiting "tu canal".
I apologize again but I loved these characters and the settings and the costumes! These writers should be flogged! What a waste of talent and resources.
Marie Celeste, I was also thrilled to see that Hugo wore his red suit coat for the final showdown with Alcides. And I loved how Herc redeemed himself so he was worthy of Margot.
I may have to get hooked on PdG so I can “visit” with you all. I’ve been reading some of those discussions and now I’ll have more time (maybe). I was looking at the mabouchita site and find that I can read the Spanish dialog (barely). I’m getting serious about learning Spanish.
It was so creepy to watch Alcides become mad (it must have been his hand that picked up Soledad’s earring, no?) I did notice when he referred to himself in the third person and I thought that wasn’t a good sign.
Speaking of madness, congrats to Gladis for her mad scene! I didn’t think it was so odd that Gladis changing into her black dress because sometimes people committing suicide want to appear at their best and Gladis would want to be properly dressed (including clean, ironed undies) even in death.
Cindybin, I was also counting the minutes last night and deciding where I would edit the scenes so there would be time for a wedding or two. As the hour wore on I knew this was one fantasy that would have to be written in my head.
Yes, I’m sure Paquito was headed straight to the hangman’s noose since San Marino justice is swift and most often flubbed. In this case, Paquito is just going to be hung for the wrong murder. I could have felt more sympathy for him except that he murdered that waiter in cold blood so many months back. By the way, do you suppose whoever ever found the suitcase full of money in the tavern realized this was the investor’s money since it was in Hugo’s suitcase?
Oriana, I understand your frustration, but given how disjointed and excruciatingly slow the past four days were, I was just grateful we were given an ending where we learned that all the good people were happy and all the evil ones were killed off.
Adios, and I’ll miss the discussions with everyone who showed up to talk about LaTraicion.

The magic went out of this novela long before the last week. It happened when they canned the original writers around capítulo 65, changed the story line, got rid of a bunch of characters and introduced new ones.
While Alcides 2.0 was a great character, I missed having the psychic connection between Soledad and Hugo and between Hugo and his brother. They made catalepsy into a fatal disease, which it wasn't, unless you got buried alive. I never wanted Hugo to be cured of catalepsy the way he was. Soledad was his cure. If he was with her, he was ok. But no, they had to do the stupid flower thing. I could go on but I won't. I thought I was done grieving but I guess I'm not.
At least I can make a soft landing with PdG. I also splurged and ordered the bootleg DVD's of Gata Salvaje and El Cuerpo de Deseo.
I've posted before that Gata (Mario's first starring role, I believe) was the first novela I ever watched. I came in in the middle and it took me ages to figure out what was going on. I didn't even realize there were captions for a while. Anyway, I have always wanted to see the whole thing.
I'm still not sure how I'll like ECDD but I'll give it a try. Even with that goatee, how bad can Mario be?
After this start you've got to learn Spanish and we'll recap Lola Calamidades together!

I have to admit last night I shed a few tears when everything was said and done. I really enjoy the novela tradition of warpping up the story, I cannot tell you how many shows I have watched of the years and because they didn't get renewed, I have been left hanging, no closure. Cindybin like you I would have loved to have seen Alcides live; but then we would have had to fight over who got to save him form his obsession with Soledad.
I will miss LT and all of you. Several times over the course of this show the recaps and comments were were more fun and interesting then the show itself. Jean I will also be sending you an email. I look forward to reading your recaps, I missed the first episoded, I came into the story when Hugo was running around in the Ugly Hat,
I also want to add my heart felt thank to yous for a job well done.

I didn’t miss not having a wedding or even a big reconciliation scene between Hugo & Danna since I usually am kind of let down by the perfect romantic endings of most telenovelas (I know, I guess I’m strange!) But since we saw Hugo’s and Soledad’s love for each other all along, even when they were at odds with each other and Soledad was refusing to give in to her feelings, I didn’t need to see the syrupy make up. I knew they would be truly happy together with their children.
I thought Oriana’s comments were interesting, because I too had wondered if maybe Mario and Danna had some problem between them at the end that resulted in their scenes together being limited. The heat between the two of them was always a big draw for me and it didn’t seem to be there at the end. But then it seems several scenes were shot when the actors involved were not in the same place, not just Hugo & Soledad.
Simultaneously shooting the guns out of Hugo’s and Boris’ hands was kind of cool (though unbelievable).
My nitpick on the finale is that I think the Alcides storyline was ended too abruptly. He talked about fighting fairly with Hugo and that it was an honor to do so. He found out a few episodes ago that Soledad had forgiven Hugo, but just suddenly realized that meant he had lost her and he snapped? At least they let him save Hugo & Boris from Arturo with his dying act. Soledad allowing his final kiss was sweet.
I though Eloisa’s end was done well – her greed was what finally killed her. And including Michelle’s sword was a nice touch.
Again, thanks so very much Jean, and I agree it’s been fun reading everybody’s comments and sharing this show!
Like Oriana, I too felt the last week of the show was really flat. And as Cindy said, I feel they cheated us out of a moving Hugo-Soledad reconcilation scene. You'd think everyone involved with the show, especially the writers, would have put a little more effort into making at least the last week something special. But maybe by then they just wanted to get the show overwith. Que lastima! Over on the Telenovela-World forum someone said something to the effect that Telemundo had edited LT down, so perhaps that has something to do with why the show seemed so disjointed in its ultimas semanas?
I just realized that Antonia dressed as George looked like Lucille Ball in one of her disguises.
Ursula was telling Soledad that she saw Boris and Marina naked in bed. Excuse me, but they were clothed. I guess we weren’t treated to the X-rated version.
Didn’t anyone notice Arturo carrying around that enormous hook which he used to slash the hookers (Jack the Ripper, San Marino style)? Aha, Marina finally chose the wrong person to extort money from.
I got a kick out of Arturo’s death scene where he was scripted to die like Rasputin (I thought he was never going to hit the ground). And I laughed when Soledad told Hugo: “He killed your brother, Alcides” (in case Hugo had forgotten Alcides’ name).
With everyone in Treasures R Us I hope they disabled any other trip wires. Marie Celeste, I also enjoyed that Boris was so single minded he didn’t even take note of the king’s ransom of wealth.
I also have loved checking in on the discussions daily to see everyone’s comments. I guess we won’t have LaTraicion to kick around (or adore) anymore!
Nancy
I don't believe that the actors have to like each other to play lovers convincingly. For whatever reason, the writers/producers just gave lip service to the resolution of the most important part of the story.
Concerning Alcides courtship of Soledad. I think there are two ways to look at it:
1. Sloppy writing. They set up this rivalry but didn't do anything with it; or
2. They on purpose made Alcides clueless on how to win Soledad. All Alcides ever did was try to get Eloisa to plead his case. He barely ever went near Soledad. It was always an obsession, a dream with him. He wanted Soledad to just fall into his arms.
The irony is that is the way Hugo got Soledad. As she said, she loved him from the first day she met him. Hugo didn't have to do anything. Soledad just fell into his arms. It was never going to happen for Alcides.
I agree that Alcides snapped pretty quickly and you would think that he would have gone after Hugo, not Soledad but whatever. They only had an hour!
thank you for the recaps. I really don't know how you did. Before LT I was watching Pasion and it had a different person for each day. Even though they did a superb job it does not come closer to what you did with LT.
My comments on the "gran final":
In your last comment you said the writers had just one hour. I'll have to disagree with that they had 5 -6 months?
The ending was too rushed. How did Boris know how to find these people in the treasury vault?
He was at Alcides' for all the shutting. What about Paquito? Ok he was not a white dove but, he didn't killed those women.
Would anybody ever know that Arturo killed them and that Paquito was the one who stole the money?
Esther never publicly repent for being a witch.
I thought they were going to call the new baby Alcides.
Ursula and Boris' children were both white.
Anyway, I agree with all of you that it was better than I expected.
Adios y gracias a todas ojala nos volvamos a encontrar escribiendo nuestros comentarios en otra telenovela.
The scenery is so beautiful, I definitely have to put Columbia on my list of future vacation spots. More motivation to keep improving my spanish!
I remember Hugo's (or was it Alcides'?) brown topcoat and tophat and the little round sunglasses because I thought they were really cool.
The pictures also reminded me that I wish they had done more with Los Burques.
That was Hugo in the top hat and little glasses. That was his 'disguise' when he came back to San Marino with old Dr. von Chirac. I think it's my favorite of Hugo's costumes in the novela. (My least favorite being his camposino outfit that he wore for what seemed like ages after he got dug up.)
I had a tiny hope that they might bring Los Burque back in the final but they didn't have a wedding where it would have made sense.
I thought that the old part of Bogota in those pictures, where they filmed a lot of LT, looked a lot like the old part of Quíto, Ecuador where I was in Feb. I guess all old colonial cities look pretty much the same. I've never been to Colombia, but I would definitely recommend Ecuador.
I never watched this novela though it did look great (too many other things on my watch), but gosh I just have to say that you are one dedicated and tough cookie for doing these recaps on your own, complete with screen shots. I always noticed the recaps post daily without fail. Kudos to you, and maybe someday I will see the novela, of course I will think of you!!
First, an image of that whole article was posted a couple of weeks ago and I believe Dánna said that they had to reshoot 30 scenes, not 30 episodes.
But, someone on TW just posted a link to the scene where Jose, Lupe and the little girl Aurora testify at Hugo's trial for reping Beatriz. This was cut from the 2/11 episode. Here is the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuA_LUXpV04
Here is the link to the same scene as it was broadcast here. If this is typical of what how this TN was edited for the US broadcast, we wuz robbed!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1S3RjW01bA
I hope that at least the scenes from the final episodes that got cut make it out there eventually. I'd really like to know why it was important that Soledad forgot her earring. Or what was said during the "comprometidos" conversation - amongst other things.
First and foremost, I would love to join the rest of the group in thanking Jean for this awesome undertaking! I didn't realize they got rid of the original writers. That alone would explain the mess they created. I don't blame Oriana for venting. I think we were all crushed because this started off so wonderfully. At least they tied up the bulk of the loose ends. Talk about a body count!
Sue, I too wondered why the heck Boris and Ursula's kids were white. I suppose if Ursula was a mulatto, there was a decent chance the children would be white. I have a friend who is only 1/4 black, and it takes you a minute to realize she's got any African blood in her. The kids are just plain white. One other thing that jumped at me: When the heck did the crossbow get re-loaded???? Alcides only set up the one, Eloisa certainly didn't re-load it, and it's not like those things have a magazine so they have multiple rounds! They could have just as easily had her accidentally back into Michelle's sword and had the same effect.
Alas, I had a feeling that the Burkes wouldn't make an appearance. I think I saw the actor's name (Guille that is) in the opening credits of "Paraiso," so I figured he wouldn't be coming back. Along those same lines, I wonder if the rest of the cast were all getting ready to move on to their next projects (the writing on the wall had been coming for a while). Dana is probably gearing up for Lola Calamidades, and all the nut and fruit easting of Mario makes me wonder if he's trying to beef up for another role. They weren't awful, just not as good as they'd been in the past.
Jean, from what little I saw in the promos for ECDD (I may have to start watching that one at some point) it seems quite promising. I think you will see a lot of Mario acting like Andres Garcia (kind of like Nick Cage and John Travolta did in Face/Off, but only going one way) as it appears that he's playing two characters - one body, two souls. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it if you have time to post it here or on PdG. Thanks again for all your time and dedication ;)
As you may have heard, Mario's dog Mambo has a role in this one too! There was a clip on YouTube of Mambo with his trainers for ECDD and Mario mentioned it was a family affair 'cause his dad and his dog were both in it with him.
I was a little surprised with the last scene of the show with Soladad and the letter. She did not have a wedding ring on, and never referred to her and Hugo as being husband and wife. He did not appear to have a wedding ring on either.
The last scene with Ursela and Boris was cute . Ursela looked very beautiful. I too think that they should have had Urselas and boris babies look a little tanner. Look how dark Hugito is, and also The baby that played Aurora.
I think that it may be possible because many people who live in Colombia are of mixed heritage, and their children can pull from a wide gene pool.
As an African American, I was approached by a Colombian girl at my college who told me that her grandmother was my color. My skin tone is dark, but this girl had hair that was similar to the thickness and texture of Soladads. but she didn't look like she had any black in her family ever. I also have a Spanish friend who said that her Dad though hispanic, looked black, and her mom was fair. She is also fair but married a dark skinned african american. Their children don't look like they have one drop of spanish in them,so many things are possible.
I hope I have not offended any one because I truly believe that black white, red or whatever hue you might be - it's all beautiful, and
I embrace all cultures and nationalities.
My last comment is that the Mexican and Colombian novelas seem to be different. The Colombian ones seem a bit more violent, and The Mexican ones seem to all end in a nice ceremoney in the catholic church.
Margarita: Not that they would care about this on LT but I got the impression that the crossbow that killed Eloisa was a different one than the one that killed Rebeca and almost killed Eloisa. It seemed to be in a different place in the treasure vault. There was a very short trigger cord.
Nancy
Looks like Guille wasn't the only one to move on to "Paraiso." From the previews for tonight's episode, Andres is in it playing an unscrupulous Doctor. Guess that's why we didn't see him returning to San Marino to look for Michelle.
Anonymous 12:11 - Wedding rings in the 1890s were not a requirement among married couples. Granted, it was usually the poor who did without because they couldn't afford them, but sometimes the rich simply found a ring they liked and that's what they used, regardless of the style or the finger they placed it on. There is a lot of symbolism in the plain gold band, but even a lot of purists opt for something more elaborate if that's what they like. I seem to recall that conservative Jewish ceremonies require the use of the plain gold band for the ceremony, and then a lot of folks will buy something fancier to actually wear. Catholics don't actually pay that much attention to the look of the ring (mine was upwardly curved so it matched my engagement ring), though most prefer something a little more traditional. Neither Hugo nor Soledad were all that concerned about tradition (starting with the kid out of wedlock) so I wouldn't be surprised if they just picked out their favorite family heirlooms for the ceremony (or the ring Hugo had already given Soledad that he wore around his neck) and left it at that.
Quick thought about the "Snow White" reference - This was years before Walt Disney, so Alcides was probably referring to the character in the actual Grimm fairy tale - pale skin, long dark hair, red lips, etc and perhaps that Soledad's dress was a very pale pink, enhancing thus the look of her pale skin. Regardless, I agree that Alcides was just delusional.
Jean, did you get my email on Saturday requesting early LT recaps, if and when you decide to do this? I’ve decided to go to the maboucita site and check out the Spanish recaps. I’m going to try to limp through some of the first LT shows to see what I can glean. But your recaps are so much more entertaining!
It’s fun that we can’t quite let go and are still thinking of comments to post about La Traicion. I’ll never forget my first love!
Nancy
You will be happy to know that I have already started working on the recap of the first episode.
I noticed that in the early episodes Mario was very clean shaven while at the end, he had the day-old stubble look. I wonder why they changed.
I agree Nancy, it is fun that we are having a hard time letting go. Today I catalogued all the episodes I had been taping since about mid-May, when I really got hooked. Before that, when I was only watching Victoria, many times I would pop in a tape and start it early if I was going to be busy and couldn’t watch. Obviously it got some of LT, depending on how soon I hit “record”. In going through these old tapes today, I found parts of two LT episodes from April that I didn’t know I had! Woo hoo! It was like getting a surprise present! I went through the recaps to match up what episodes they went to. One is from April 14 and joined in progress right when Hugo kisses Soledad on the forehead and says he is a different Alcides and then walks away. I finally got to see his “vengeance-is-mine” expression! Yikes-—he was almost as scary as Alcides! The other tape is from April 24 starting where Soledad tells Hugo he is always hurting her. I have a few others from early May that are joined in progress and then go right into Victoria as well, and then I stopped taping Victoria and focused only on LT through the finale!
I so hope they rerun the entire series and don’t cut anything out. I’d love to record the whole novella.
Please let me know if you email me again and I'll be on the lookout for it. Thanks!
Nancy
He absolutely carried himself in two distinct ways when he was in the Hugo persona, and when he was in the Alcides persona.
To me Hugo's eyes always seemed to smile, and a clean pureness, and honesty always shined through. But he played Alcides so earthy and sensual even to the most minute details.
When he was in the cave after kidnapping Soladad she ran her fingers over his lips, and he didn't kiss her fingertips or anything, but when she ran her fingers over Alcides' mouth he sucked them so seductively that it just made you see the difference in the brothers.
Jean thanks for the history about the rings, It bothered me. \With No ceremoney, or rings it was hard for me to connect the dots though I know that they loved each other very deeply. In my mind I guess I'm always looking for the closure that comes in most novelas of the wedding scene.
I really did like this better, minus the ring situation, because I always want to know what happened afterwards.
It bugged me at the ending of La fea mas bella, because I wanted to know where they lived, If they worked etc.
Margarita- I never thought about what Alcides meant about Snow White. You are probably right and didn't have to do with what she was wearing, which was a very light pink.
Ah, what could have been, had the original writers stayed on, and the plot not become so messy! Pero, así es la vida, y las telenovelas.
Hugo was simply stunning in that red coat! He was a little underwhelming when he asked Sole if she was ok after the shootout w/ Arturo y Alcides. Why didn't he rush over and take her in his arms? They both played it very restrained.
Poor Alcides, he was such a tortured soul. I wish he could have been saved. A reformed Alcides would have been a lot fun.
The Network 54 pics of Mario were fantastic! He was looked even more handsome than on television. I would simply melt away if I saw him in person, much less ask to take a photo or get an autograph.
Adios to all "La Traicioneras", it's been fun. See ya at PdG!
For a bit of useless trivia, I just saw an episode of "Decisiones" with Dana Garcia (Soledad), Salvador del Solar (Arturo) and Indira Serrano (Ursula). It also featured Solar's old costar from "Sin Verguenza," Alejandro de la Madrid, and a woman named Ana Beatriz Osorio who looks a lot like the actress that played Manuela, but is definitely someone else. The episode is called "Mecanismo Ilusion," and is about a woman who marries a man from a foreign country where poligamy was practiced. You can find the episode on You Tube with Hebrew subtitles.
