Doña Bárbara - Mon., Sept 15: Everybody tells DB she is a monster

Another excellent episode.

Eustaquia is shocked to find out that DB almost killed her daughter. DB asks Eustaquia to be honest and tell her if she is a monster. Eustaquia points out that most women want to love and protect their daughters so, yes, DB is a monster. DB says in justification that Marisela hit her. Eustaquia tells DB that Marisela isn't afraid of DB anymore. She shouldn't be surprised, "La hija de tigre nace pintada," literally, "the daughter of a tiger (meaning a jaguar here) is born painted." It was translated in the captions as, "An apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

Luisana overhears Marisela telling one of the terneras that DB almost killed her in front of Santos. Luisana is overjoyed, "Se fregó la bruja!" "The witch is washed up!" Luisana makes Marisela understand that this is a good thing because Santos won't continue to see DB after what she did.

It looks like Federica, on Josefa's advice, is going to try the pregnancy trap to get Antonio.

Santos sits and thinks and finally comes to the realization that he was completely wrong about DB.

Antonio tells Cecilia to feel his heart and that he loves her but she says that their love is impossible.

Mauricio overhears this and gives Antonio advice. He tells him that Cecilia is madly in love with him but she is a romantic and wants to suffer for love. He advises Antonio to win Cecilia over by using romantic things like poetry.

It's the first day of school and Cecilia finds that Antonio has left her a message on the blackboard.

Luisana goes to the 'well of sighs' where DB and Santos meet for sex. DB has already left but she finds traces of DB's withcraft paraphenalia including the picture of Santos that DB cut from the newspaper. Santos shows up and Luisana makes her move to get Santos back and they kiss but DB is watching. Mauricio has already warned Luisana that DB is dangerous to cross but Lusisana doesn't believe she is any danger.

Yes, an excellent episode indeed. I thought Edith Gonzalez was outstanding. DB is so out of touch with normal feelings that she at first doesn't get it that Santos is upset she pointed a pistol at her own daughter. From the various persons discussing this in hindsight, it sounded to me like she might really have fired had he not stopped her. She tried to backtrack when she started to catch on that she might lose Santos over this action and say that she only meant to frighten her. Her emotions then vacillated wildly between rage and grief the whole episode.

And I was quite pleased to see the liquor plot with Genoveva revealed, although it doesn't look like the sulky ternera is going to have to pay any price, at least not yet.

Do we think the writers mean us to really believe in brujería? Several times she's "called" Santos and it seems to work. If it really is brujería, will it work without the newspaper photo?

And the actress playing Federica is doing a good job. If I had her in the room with me right now, I'd be hard pressed not to slap her!

Hi Novelera: I agree with you on Edith Gonzalea in this episode. DB is such an interesting character.

Genoveva got away without being identified as the liquor carrier but whenever she shows up at Altamira, Luisana is going to id her. I think she is going to pay another price, too. At the end of last night's episode, she left the table and told her sisters/cousins she didn't feel well. That means pregnancy to me.

As for the brujería, I don't think we are meant to believe it is real. DB might believe in it. She calls Santos but he wants to see her anyway so he goes. DB may believe that without the picture she can't embrujar Santos.

Wow, this is a fun novela! DB's complexity of emotions are delivered well and I actually have moments of sadness for her. When Eustaquia (sp?) said DB wasn't normal - that should've been yet another clue that she's going down the wrong path to 'get' Santos.

Again, I liked Maurice and that he was nice to Antonio, giving him advice on how to handle women. LOL! So far, he's doing better than Santos. ;-}

ITA, the brujeria is just coincidental circumstances, looked at as cause and effect. Except when the Bruja actually causes the effect (poison thorn). DB is pretty good at causing her desired effects...

Thanks, Jean. I've caught some of DB the last two nights...pretty interesting. It seems that Santos has many admirers, and he seems to be trying to oblige as many mujers as he can. What a horndog. However, he may be in danger having spurned DB...hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
