Cuidado con el Angel - Nov. 17 - A tale of Christmas blessings and curses

EPISODE 39 - Monday, Nov. 17, 2008:
* Chuy visits Cande at the hospital.

* JM confronts Nellie over her lawsuit for custody of Mayita.

* Chuy finds Adrian at the apartment complex. Adrian looks at the court document and tells Chuy that she has to appear in a deposition hearing.

* Nellie explains her position and intent to carry out on her threat. JM's angry. Nellie is adamant in her reasons.

* Viv is back to seducing Gus. Gus tries to resist but Viv continues. Gus threatens to take the mask away from her if she doesn't leave his house immediately.

* Adrian and Chuy discuss the document and if Chuy will appear at the hearing.

* JM and Nellie continue to argue over the custody lawsuit.

* Granny tells Mayita a quaint little Christmas fairytale (with accompanying animation - of which Granny turns into the angel on top of the Christmas tree). Mayita is still crying and upset. Granny does her best to cheer up little Mayita. Mayita is scared - she doesn't want to lose her daddy, but she also doesn't want to leave Granny. (AW!)

* Adrian tries to continue the discussion. Chuy is uneasy, takes the document and leaves.

* Viv counters Gus' threat with one of her own - she dares him to take the mask, but she then will go ahead and tell Lety everything.

* Chuy at the apartment/laundromat. She's thinking about Amador's offer to make her a 'TV star.'

* Gus and Viv continue to volley their threats back and forth - her seduction vs. his family. She is very convincing and eventually kisses him. (like a viper)

* Chuy visits Cande at the hospital - Chuy places a lot of fruit on the hospital tray in front of Cande and then gives Cande her report on the laundry business. Cande checks out the fruit selection. Chuy then mentions Amador's offer.

* Chuy rides her bike through the city stairs and streets. A man helps her secure her bike on the sidewalk. She checks in with the receptionist.

* Amador is busy in the studio with the crew putting together the set.

* Chuy is excited when the receptionist gives her a badge so she can enter.

* Amador and crewmember move props around. Chuy enters the studio. Amador gives her a warm welcome hug. Chuy expresses her amazement to Amador about the studio. They discuss the production going on and his offer. She's a little apprehensive. Amador acts sincere and wonders if she needs proof.

* Steffie visits JM at his office. They discuss Pat, Chuy and Nellie's lawsuit depositions.

* Amador shows Chuy around the studio - he hands her a script and shows her the part he wants her to audition for. Chuy is impactado. Amador explains that she is to take the script home, learn the lines and return tomorrow for the audition.

* JM and Steffie continue discussing the lawsuit, and that he doesn't want Chuy to be involved.

* Chuy and Adrian are outside in the neighbor talking. Steffie finds them and tells Chuy that she has to appear at the deposition hearings, or she could go to jail. Steffie leaves - Adrian and Chuy are impactado.

* JM sits and thought bubbles in the lobby. Chuy arrives and enters the lobby - JM is impactado.

* Pat is outside his house; Isa and Steffie are talking with him about the deposition hearing. Pat explains that the hearing is private - no audience is permitted. Isa is so disappointed. Pat leaves in his car.

* In the lobby, Chuy and JM wait and sit opposite each other.

* Nellie is in the room with the attorneys and judge to give her deposition.

* Viv plays nursemaid and gives Lety her next dose of medicine.

* Gus and Gabe talk about Viv and her threat to tell Lety about the affair if he tries anything against her and the mask.

* Nellie spews her opinions against JM and Chuy during the deposition. She claims that JM is low-class, immoral and a bad example for a father.

* Attorney and Nellie exit the room. Nellie spouts off to JM and Chuy about her deposition. Attorney escorts Chuy inside.

* In the room, assistant has Chuy swear on the Bible to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

* Isa walks in the garden alongside Steffie, who is on the phone with Nellie. Nellie is sharing all the information from her deposition and about the reactions of JM and Chuy at the deposition hearing also.

* Prosecuting attorney ("Sylvester", MdF) starts to interrogate Chuy before he starts to question her. (Uy!) Chuy sits and listens.

* Gabe escorts Viv to the private office to talk. They discuss Viv's scheme to lure Gus away from Lety and his family. Gabe can't let that happen, Gus is married with children. Viv doesn't really care; she just wants Gus and then she cackles like a witch.

* Chuy's deposition continues.

* Mayita sits down on the outside driveway - waiting for someone to arrive.

* Gabe and Viv continue to argue of Lety and Gus's marriage. Viv tells Gave where to meet her and Gus for proof of the affair.

* Judge believes Chuy's statement. "Sylvester" continues to badger and question. Chuy is frustrated as she continue to answer. She walks out to the lobby. JM enters the room.

* "Sylvester" starts the deposition with more of his demands and questions against JM.

* Mayita waits in the driveway. Nellie pulls up in her limo and calls out to Mayita, why are you sitting there? Mayita says, she's waiting for her mom.

* JM gives his story to the lawyers and judge at his deposition.

* Nellie yells at Mayita to get her to go inside. Mayita cries and says she's sick - Nellie and Mayita argue. Mayita cries for her mom and dad.

* Chuy at church altar praying for forgiveness.

* JM continues with his deposition. He tells about his guilty conscience and that he has always wanted to help kids and teens get away from violence and to safety. He also cries that he loves his daughter and want to raise her. He's not a criminal. He cries so more to the attorneys and judge to let him keep custody of his daughter.

* Chuy works on the laundry in the apartment. Adrian enters and wants to talk about her deposition, JM and his daughter. Chuy asks what is his interest in the hearing?

* Judge and attorneys dismiss JM from the deposition. JM stands in the lobby, thinking.

* Adrian explains his reasons for saying what he did; his suspicions of JM and the hearings. She tells him to stop. Adrian will do that and leaves. Chuy picks up Cuate and talks to him. Chuy takes out the script from the book shelf. She tells Cuate what a lucky dog she is.

* JM and the lawyer discuss that the judge wants to see him in the room again. (evidence of proof?)

* "Sylvester" and mate walk JM back inside. In the room, judge has JM sit down.

* Cande talks with Padre about Chuy having to give a deposition in a custody lawsuit started by Nellie.

* Chuy and Cuate leave for the audition.

* Out on the stairs, Chuy runs into Padre and explains to him the script that she's off to an audition. He's impactado.

* Mayita has a nightmare in her bed. Balbina tries to wake her up. She screams for Cuate and Papa!

* Judge gives JM his judgement - that JM is to retain full custody of his daughter. JM is so relieved and excited.

* Balbina stays and hugs Mayita in bed.

* JM finishes filing the paperwork in the case; he will keep and raise his own daughter. JM hugs Mayita in the castle garden.

Holy lightning recap Eeyore! Thanks for getting this done so fast.

Now, I'm wondering if they're going to arrest Marichuy for perjury. I suppose they could argue that it's her word against JM's, but it's unusual for someone to confess to almost committing a crime when he's trying to win a custody battle, so I suspect they'll assume it was Mari that lied. Maybe once she's in jail, someone at the infermery will actually give her a proper check up and inform her about the bun in the oven! Just a possible option...

Thanks so much for the early bird recap, Eeyore. And there was a lot going on there.

I know I'm shallow, but JM's eyes are so soft and appealing, I would have been ready to give him custody of my own children if I'd been one of the judges. I was so happy for him when he got the verdict. Yay! But I don't think Onelia is going to give up that easily. Can't wait to see the smackdown JM gives her, even though she does literally smack him in response.

Viv is the perfect psychopath as she continues in her plot to poison Lety and steal her husband. That is one cold lady.

Wow, Mayita's crying is really heartbreaking. Onelia and Viv are two stone-cold b****s.

I think when Viv and that guy were discussing taking away the mask, it was a figurative move--he would unmask her as the instigator of the cheating, and he dared her to unmask him.

Beckster, I made a point of listening to the piano music, and it does indeed sound uncannily like the Young and the Restless theme.

Did Mari really lie and say nothing happened--or is it that she is saying that nothing serious happened, which is a subtly different concept?

Eeyore: Thanks for the recap. A lot happened in this chapter.

There goes Stefi sitting herself down is Juanmi's office and sticking her pug nose into his business. You'd think by now that he would show her the door and tell her to get lost.

Mari was sure telegraphing a message to Juanmi - both going in and out of the hearing office. He did a really good job of looking serious and scared. I thought she was trying to telepath to him that everything would be OK. When she prayed later she asked forgiveness for lying because she didn't think that that chamaco deserved the worst thing that could happen to a parent - lose his child.

I still think the relationship between Amador and Mari has changed. When he attacked her in an earlier episode, it was pure violence. He now seems disposed to help her - and, of course, eventually help himself. But, it could also be the oldest casting couch deal ever offered.

Thanks for the recap eeyore. I don't understand why the brothers in Spain seem powerless to stop Vivian. Yes she's crazy but they both can't figure out a way to stop her (come on).

I'm with you Pasofino. Amador is the same, but his tactic is new (the casting couch). A leopard (in our case a wolf) does not change its spots.

Ugh, Gustavo. Obviously he doesn't really want to push vile Viv away, or else he could certainly do a better job of it. He never just said he wasn't going to have an affair with her, just muttered stuff about how men shouldn't have affairs right at home etc. Weak. Anyway, Leti is probably not long for this world; Viv deliberately gave her a double dose of the dangerous medicine.

I don't know how Onelia thinks she can sue JM for custody of his daughter and then go right back to live at his house. He needs to throw her out. I would love it if he installed some nannycams so he could see what she does to Mayita all day when he isn't there.

The story Granny Mariana told was The Little Match Girl, right? It was sad; no wonder Mayita was crying.

Thanks for the recap.

Thanks for the recap!

Julia – I think that was the Little Match Girl, but I don’t know the story, just the title.

I liked this episode because we got to go places instead of hang out at those lonesome rich folks’ houses. There were lots of street scenes, and we got teleported to Spain, the judicial offices, and best of all, Televisa. At least they didn’t have to hunt for props for Televisa!

I’m curious to see if Mari turns out to be a flop as an actress, or is a natural and hits big.

Yes, Julia and Maggie...it was the little Match Girl by Hans Christian Anderson. I still have my book from childhood (as well as the Snow Queen) and still cry when I read it. I don't think I'd read it to cheer up a sad little girl but every once in a while that "granny" throws me for a loop.

In The Little Match Girl, a little orphan girl is huddled on the streets, freezing (I think the original is set in London) and trying to sell matches to make a little money for food and whatnot. It's not going so well, so she lights the last few matches she has for a little warmth, then dies and goes off to a better place where she will be warm and happy, and in the morning people find her frozen to death on the sidewalk with burned matches next to her. I think that's how it went. A tragic little story and I can't figure out why granny would tell it. Maybe Mayita wants to remind herself that she could be worse off?

My guess is that Mari will be starting to succeed as an actress, then when she realizes she is pregnant that will change everything. I can't imagine they would follow up on the perjury, although with Onelia on the case I guess it could happen. Still, though, JM and Mari were the only ones there, Onelia can't prove that the story she heard is true. JM's story was that something happened, but it wasn't that bad, and Mari's was, whatever, she doesn't remember anything awful, so it would be ludicrous for the judge to pursue it further. Not that ludicrous things EVER happen in telenovelas.

The Little Match Girl also had a kindly grandmother who had died and who appears in a vision to her as she is striking the last of her matches to keep warm. Maybe Mayita has heard this story and this is what brings on
her own visions. Lucky for Mayita she does not have an abusive father like the girl in the story, as it was he who sent out her on those freezing nights to sell matches.

Thanks for clarifying the story, J.J. I knew I'd forgotten the details. Maybe Mayita was reminded of the story while she was sitting on the pavement by the street, waiting for her horrid mother to come.

Marichuy sure was friendly with Amador, considering that his attacks on her in the past have been far worse than what JM did, and she remembers them clearly, and he hasn't given her any reason to think he's changed. Not to mention that he surrounds himself with people who won't chastise him for his awful behavior. You'd think she'd be very nervous to be sleeping at Cande's place alone, with that rabid wolf prowling the barrio.

Thanks for the recap, Eeyore. I like your title.

I was thinking about our characters and the situations that they create. I agreed with all of you that Vivana is a psychopath or something worst. This explains her mother Onelia and what she is doing now to gain control over Juan Miguel. All this custody thing is to gain control over Juan Miguel again. She and Vivana had complete control it seems like, but now Juan Miguel sees that there is a different woman out there for him. Juan Miguel has been a victim of both these women since he married Vivana. They most likely abuse him verbally and under estimated him as a man. This would explain his behaviors and decisions. He, to me, is not going to kick Onelia out. Juan Miguel needs to grow as a man first mentally. My social work mind at work again. Juan Miguel will finally grow and self-actualized when he gains courage.

I better close with that on Juan Miguel.

What we need are some comedial characters besides Candelaria. The writer need to add some more than all this drama and tragedy.
We need some characters such as Rocky aka Morgan and Braulio from Al diablo con los guapos or Fernando, Lety, or Tomas from La Fea.

Genevieve

One thing that I want to add that I didn't add is.

At least, Vivana is in Spain playing with people's lives for amusement. This gets her out of Mexico City. Think about it? If Vivana showed herself and said I am alive.

At least for Marichuy, it is a good thing that Vivana is out of Mexico City. Marichuy has alright too much to deal with, at least she does not have to deal with Vivana. Vivana is a psychopath remember. She is capable of anything.
