Fuego en la Sangre, 01/23/09: Raqui’s Righteous Swan Song

Capítulo 182

As we begin our journey through the loony land of the everlasting “luna llena” (full moon) we find that Jimena has just accused Darth Rico of attempting to rape her and has even shocked the sh—(rhymes with spit) out of the now mute Root. Darth feigns offense and anger at the accusation. “Where’d you come up with that idiocy, you brat?” Jimena says she never dared say it before, but now she realizes she was wrong not to. No, she hasn’t any proof and never saw her attacker’s face, but right before she left town she noticed him sporting a big bandage in the same place she whacked her would-be rapist over the head before fleeing. Rico admits he had a bandage on his head but claims it was from the men who tried to rob him. “I even told Root about the incident. Didn’t I, Root?”

Jimena says she doesn’t believe him and is thinking of reporting him to the authorities just so they might investigate. Darth tells her she can do whatever she darn well pleases, but he’s not afraid of a fool like her or the authorities. He stomps out the door. Root follows her daddy back to the bungalow.

Once they’re back, Darth admits to Root that he did try to rape Jimena because at the time he thought it was a good idea and a way to get even with Sofia. No, he never managed to do the deed, but he’s not giving up on getting even with Sofia for all the humiliation she’s caused them; and when he’s done with the one sister he’s going after the other. Root tells him she can’t believe he’s seriously doing this all on her account, but he insists he is. They’ve got to stick together and strike out at their enemies—and if Sofia insists in running them off the place, then she’ll end up making herself his next victim.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the surrounding hills at Casa de Coyote, Raqui, Soledad and Coyote are chatting together. Coyote congratulates Raqui because he never thought she would dare go after what’s hers. She says she has Soledad to thank because his momma was the one who convinced her. If she’s going to live without fear then she has to confront her husband as soon as possible. Besides, there was something else that was bugging her, a possible other crime that Rico should also pay for. She has the last will and testament of her dead BIL which named his children (Small and Tall Tweedle) as his heirs, but her husband never gave them their inheritance. His brother and her SIL died together in a strange accident soon after signing the will and it all seemed odd to Raqui. She thinks the accident was caused on purpose by Rico himself to take possession of the nephews’ fortune.

Coyote says he realizes that Ricardo Uribe is a man capable of doing anything for money. Soledad bemoans the fact that she fell in love with an evil man and Coyote says even better reason to punish the man. Soledad begs him to leave it up to God and The Law. She warns him that to raise his hand against his father would unleash a series of violent and vengeful acts in which Coyote himself might encounter his own punishment which is what worries her most.

That night Root remembers back earlier in the day to her strange run-in with El Coyote. She remembers telling him that the strong do not feel love, only hate and vengeance and his telling her that she’s wrong, that she simply was never brought up with love in her life. She wonders then what it is about him that makes her feel good being around him, and what it is that connects her to him. At the same time, Coyote is sitting in his truck-a-saurus remembering his own conversation with Root and how she says she was raised to be just like her daddy. He thinks to himself that despite Ricardo Uribe, she is his sister and he would like to save her. He also remembers what his mother told him about what might happen if he acted against his father.

At the Double E (Hacienda de las Elizondo y del execrable Escandon) Juan and his brothers sneak in with a group of mariachis for a surprise serenade. Franco starts singing:

“I sing under [literally, “at the foot of”] your window so you might know that I love you.
You don’t care about me at all, but I’m dying for you.
They say that I’m mistaken, that I should wake up from my dreams,
But they were wrong because you had to be mine. [Literally, “I had to be your master.”]
What am I going to do if I truly care for you? I really adore you and I cannot forget you...”

Crabi and Fernando hear the commotion downstairs and she gripes that the Reyes’ now think they own the place. Fer says he doesn’t know what she’s complaining about since she’s the one to blame: she underestimated Sofia thinking that Sofia would never confront her again but she did and this time she beat her. Crabi doesn’t like his tone. Fer doesn’t back down, though. So Gabi asks him if he plans to stay with her now that she is no longer the owner of the hacienda, or if he's going to kick her to the curb? (I vote for option #2.) He takes a deep puff off his cheroot and stares at her, but he doesn’t answer.

Downstairs the guys keep singing their hearts out. (Bummer for Mariachi. He'd have loved this shin-dig!) Upstairs in her room, Slowfia fights the urge to go out onto the landing to listen. Downstairs the guys have finished their first song but none of the sisters has come down. Juan is majorly bummed and feels guilty that it’s come to this. “Remember the first time we came here thirsting for vengeance filled with rage and pain inside us?” Oscar says yes, but not now. Now they’re filled with love and hope, right? Franco says yes, but now we’ll have to remind them that we love them with all our hearts. (For the love of gawd, who writes this stuff?) Poor Juan figures it’s pretty plain that Sofia still hasn’t forgiven him. He’s even surer of it when only Sarita and Jimena walk down to the landing. Franco tells him not to get depressed; the next song will certainly make her come down. (That’s the spirit!)

Sofia begins to smile to herself and eventually comes down once Franco starts the next song:

“I swore to make you cry, to make you suffer in the deepest reaches of your heart…
Even to wreck your reputation, to put an end to this burning passion, to make you pay with suffering the way I paid.
And I was mistaken, because by being close to you in order to get even, I have fallen in love.
You have burned my blood with fire, unearthing a heart that died from pain. From hate to love there is only a step.
I swore to make you fear to ever even love again. To mercilessly win your love in order only to leave you a feeling of rage inside that you should not be able to forget.
And I made a mistake. It’s true I went from hate to love. Mistaken.
The stars coming down from heaven have deceived me. (Not sure about this line, poetic phrasing throws me, so take pity--)
You have burned my blood with fire, unearthing a heart that died from pain. From hate to love there is only a step...”

Juan serenades Sofia himself. (–Damn! Did Uni finally get wise and dub EY or does the audio tech deserve kudos for working a little sound magic –‘cause EY actually sounds half-way decent this time! Key word here being “half ” of course.) Her little heart goes pitty pat.

Across the way at the Double R (Hacienda de los Robles-Reyes) Rigo and Eugenia are having supper when Saul and Hortensia come back home after picking up groceries. Saul’s hungry too, but Hortensia Henpecker scolds her husband for wanting to eat first without putting away the groceries. (She treats this man like a little kid and, the worst of it is that he actually goes along with it!) He leaves the kitchen to do his “chores” and Rigo tells his mother what’s in store for her if she doesn’t mend her bossy ways. She brings up Quintina and nobody knows what Tía Quinti is up to. Quintina, however, is somewhere having a grey “goose” party with the Gossip Sisters and the male dancers (the goos-ees) that they hired. FF>>

On a higher note (and do pardon the pun) at the Double E, Franco continues to serenade Sarita while they’re alone on the couch in the living room. In another room, Oscar tells Jimena that his brothers have told him that he shouldn’t kid himself, that he lost Jimena a while ago. He sings (if you can call it that) some silly song then to her, too. (Unfortunately, Viewerville left the earplugs at the shooting range. --This is romance? --and what’s that music playing in the background? It certainly isn’t what Oscar’s singing. Note to editing: next time read the damn memo!) When his private serenade for Jimena (mercifully) ends, Oscar says he may have lost his voice some, but he does love her. They kiss and he cutely asks for a little drink of something hard. (Ha! He’s welcome to what’s left of mine. Salud!)

To top off this cacophonous medley of musical madness, we have Juan serenading Sofia alone in her bedroom. (Now, this is acting boys and girls, and definitely why Adela demands—and gets--the big bucks!! Somehow she manages to keep smiling throughout this entire, pitiful scene despite EY’s embarrassing caterwauling. Honestly gotta wonder if she’s smiling because she’s in character or because she’s trying like crazy just to keep from losing control and falling flat on the floor in spasms of laughter. Even my two cats had their ears back, so kudo’s to costuming, ‘cause I’ll be damned if I can make out those earplugs Adela’s got to be wearing!) FF>>

When Juan finishes this personal …er…serenade, Sofia and he nearly kiss, but she pulls away at the last second because she can’t get the image of Root and him in bed together out of her mind. (I’m not so sure it wasn’t his singing.) He’s frustrated as hell with her and says to forget that already. They’ve been this route before. So, in the end he has to settle for a simple “I do love you, Juan.” He tells her valiantly that he’ll fight to help her erase that image and prove to her that he loves her and will forever.

Across the hall, Fernando has Gabi right where he wants her. She’s desperate because he won’t answer her question. He plays the offended husband and claims she’s the one who doesn’t love him, and says that she has never loved him. The proof is that she’s always doubted his fidelity. He yells at her in feigned frustration that he’s not going to be able to stay with her if she’s constantly badgering him about his feelings for her every minute. She says he’s got to understand that she’s afraid he’ll cheat on her with her own daughter. (Doesn’t say much about your choice in men if that’s the problem, does it, deary?) “How can you accuse me of something so low, so despicable, so sick?” he yells. (The b.s. is so deep the woman should have suffocated by now.) “Are you going to tell me now that what Eva told you counts more than my love and dedication to you?”

Gabi is really wimping out. She tells him it’s not just Eva, but Sofia has also insinuated things. “And who will you believe tomorrow? So much jealousy and mistrust! And the worst is that now you believe Sofia! Sofia has taken away your hacienda and is determined to take away the only man who has loved you, the only man who has loved you! Me! Okay. Fine. I’ll make you happy and you can be at peace. I’ll leave this very night!” Gabi can’t handle it and begs him to stay. She says she’s just gotten confused and is hurting from everything that’s happened to her. He walks out and slams the door, then heads straight for his old room where he starts counting the cash in his safe and thinks to himself that he’s fed up with Gabriela; and it’s best he leave for a while. He is thinking he has enough to go somewhere far away when Juan walks in on him.

Fer quickly throws the wad of bills back into the safe and locks it. Juan asks him what he’s doing in there. Fer explains it used to be his room and he needed to get something from his safe. “It’s not anymore. --Why are you getting nervous?” Juan looks over at the safe. “Seems to me you’ve got something outright devious hidden away in there.” Fer says whatever it is, it’s his business, not Juan’s. Juan tells him that since he lives there now, it’s his business also. “Remember. I’m watching you, because I can’t seem to get it out of my head that you’ve got lots to do with all the bad stuff that’s happened around here.” Feo suddenly turns best bud and tells him he should look around him ‘cause he’s not the only enemy Juan has there at the hacienda. Juan could be in for a big surprise. He tells Juan to keep his eyes open and then leaves. Juan curses and kicks at the safe. “Damn it! I nearly had him!” He looks down at the safe again. “Seems to me there’s a rattlesnake shut up in there and I’m going to find it!” (Don’t ya just love that buckaroo Juan-talk?)

Feo retreats to the office in the dark to take a smoke and bitch to himself that Juan had to catch him just when he was about to get his things out of the safe. Now he’s got to keep up the farce with Gabi at least until he can leave and get away from the place.

At the same time, Gabi is lying on her bed and really starting to doubt herself. She’s remembering the fit she threw in front of Eva earlier in the family crypt and what Eva intimated about Fer. “Fernando loves me! He loves me!” “—if that’s what you think, then find out for yourself!” Gabi mentally replays the argument with Feo from a few minutes before and his threatening to leave “this unbearable” relationship. (Gawd, don’t ya just hate it when a perfectly good villana starts to go down for the count?) “Fernando loves me and I’m about to lose him all because of Eva and Sofia! --No! I’m not going to allow it. I’m going to get my husband back!” Feo comes back into their bedroom at that point and she asks him to forgive her. She tells him they’ll live luxuriously somewhere else on the money she’s got. He pretends to give in. (Viewerville wants to barf.)

The next morning all three sisters are worrying over Momma’s sudden plans to leave the hacienda with Fer. She sneers that she’s certain they couldn’t care less about her or where she’s going. She says she’s leaving and she’s going to prove to them that hubby loves her with or without the hacienda and because she’s sick of them and never wants to see them again; especially Sofia who took what belonged to her. Snowfia falls for the major guilt trip and tries to explain to Momma that she never planned to keep the hacienda for herself and was planning to divide it up equally, but it just runs off Gabi like water off a duck’s back. “No. You can have it all. You should all be happy. The way’s clear now for you all to wallow with those miserable Reyes’s.” (Let me help you pack.)

Over at the Double R, Juan is helping Franco get Oscar to stand on his feet and recounting his run in with Fer the night before when he had that safe open. “I almost caught the guy!” Oscar tells them that the last time he saw inside that safe it was chuck full of money, and lots of other things he thinks should be gone through. Franco remembers he told him about the little wooden chest that was in there. Oscar says he never got to look inside it. Juan decides they’ll take care of finding out what’s in it that night for sure.

Speaking of said mysterious little chest, Feo has it open and is holding Libia’s locket while the sicko thinks back to the night he clubbed her in the river and left her to drown.

Meanwhile, Raquel pays a visit to Gabi while she’s packing. “So you’re leaving. I already heard you lost everything because of your selfishness and wicked ways.” Gabi interjects that she lost the hacienda, but she’s got lots left of her own to live a lot better than what she does here at the hacienda. (Somehow Viewerville finds that hard to believe.) She tells Raqui that she, on the other hand, doesn’t have the proverbial pot to whizz in or the window to throw it out of. Raqui pulls out the papers and quickly corrects Gabi. She brags that she has sole control of the entire Uribe fortune and can’t wait to throw hubby Darth out on his impoverished ass. Gabi says she’s not interested in Ricardo Uribe so why tell her? Well, says Raqui, you’ll be interested when you find out about Fernando’s cheating. (You got that right!) Raqui lets the first anvil drop.

Gabi wants to know what she means about Fernando’s cheating. “Fer’s only been with you for the money.” Gabi denies it and says Fer loves her. “Fernando doesn’t love you and he never loved you.” Raqui delights in telling her there’s nobody more blind than those who will not see. “Just where do you think he got that serpent belt from, huh? From my bedroom, the bedroom I used to share with my husband! Yeah, you asked me lots of times if he was my lover, well, he was! We made a fool out of you before and after your wedding! Fernando was my lover. He was always MY lover!” Raqui turns tail and leaves Crabi stewing-in-her-own-juices impactada.

Raqui walks back through the woods and is thinking that she’s going to go back to steal back the belt and take it to the police once and for all. Unfortunately, Darth has been following her and he races out of the trees just then and grabs her. He forces her back to the bungalow at knife-point. “Damned female! Keep your mouth shut! Shut up!”

When they get back there he says he suspects Juan Reyes gave her the papers he’d been looking for all this time and he wants them. She refuses to tell him anything but he takes one look at the big purse and figures they’re in it, so he wallops her a good one and knocks her out cold. He reaches in the purse and finds the papers. “You stupid woman! You were always stupid (he’s got that right) and you’ll die stupid. He rips up some sheets and ties her up.

Meanwhile, Gabi is looking for Fernando to get an explanation, but he apparently left the hacienda early that morning and nobody knows where he went.

Once night falls Darth threatens to torture Raqui unless she signs over the papers and the Uribe fortune. He also wants to know about the person who’s been protecting her but she refuses to say a word. She gives in when he promises to let her go afterward.

Across the way in the hacienda, the Reyes’s try to open Feo’s safe while Gabi’s downstairs in the office knocking down more brandy. (I swear that woman has a wooden leg. She puts away enough booze to give any self-respecting sailor a good run for his money.) They’ve got to hurry up and get it open before she comes back up and finds out.

Back at the bungalow, Raqui finishes signing the papers but, of course, Rico refuses to let her go. He says she is just as innocent and trusting as ever, though she had him outsmarted for a while with that affair of hers. When Raqui plays dumb he tells her he knows all about her affair with Fernando and figures he’s also been her protector. It was Fer who stole the snake belt and it was her fault that people discovered he was the one who murdered the Reyes’s parents. Raqui whines that he promised to let her go free, but he says he’s got no reason to make good on a promise to a whore. She kicks him in the groin and runs out of the bungalow and into the woods.

Back at the hacienda Oscar finally manages to hit on the right combination. The safe is opened and the three of them get ready to take a look inside.

Raqui continues running and is surprised by a momentary glimpse at Death watching her from a break in the trees. It’s just enough time for Darth to catch up to her. He grabs her again at the top of a huge, nasty-looking ravine. He says she's going back to the bungalow to pay for what she’s done to him. She calls him a coward and he gets even angrier. He demands to know what there was between her and Fernando Escandon. Raqui says fine, then she’ll tell him. They were lovers and she loved going to bed with him because he turned her on like Rico never could. That’s enough for Rico. He belts her and Raqui nearly loses her footing on the cliff. She begs him to help her and promises to tell him something he’d never suspect but will want to know.

Rico says talk. Raqui quickly tells him that he has a son with the same name as his. Rico demands to know where he can find him and who his mother is. Raqui is about to tell him the woman’s name but then suddenly begins to laugh hysterically. She says she’ll never tell him and that will be her revenge. He’ll never know who his son is or who his mother was. “Did you hear me, Ricardo Uribe, you devil?” She either pushes herself off the cliff or slips. As she falls through the air she screams at him, “It will be my vengeance, you devil!” Rico’s eyes are like saucers. “RAQUE-E-L-L!!”

How is Raquel the sole heir to the Uribe fortune when Benito and Octavio were supposed to be?

Last chapters! Yea

Anon. 2:50pm - Good question. The only thing that makes sense to me is that she's essentially the executor of the estate and so she would be the one to hand it all over to her nephews. Or there is some other legal technicality in Mexico that they would have assumed Mexican citizens understood. If I missed something then somebody else maybe could clarify better.

Sofia deserves an acting award for looking at Juan lovingly without laughing outloud as he serenaded her! Yikes - whoever told him he could sing???

I thought Oscar's singing to Jimena was equally bad and yes, there was an awful lot of background noise during the awful moment!

Whatever possessed the dim-wit Raquel to confront Ricardo on her own after all the offers of help she had?

Wow, Jardinera, what a rip-roarin' recap of a rip-snortin' capitulo! I guess Coyote didn't even have to start the deadly chain of events, they've already started, and I can't wait to see what happens next. Root used to think she was bad, but she's nothing compared to the evil of Ricardo (and Feo). I did sort of wonder why Raquel, when she ran out the cabaña, had to go into the woods. I sort of thought the cabaña was pretty much in the front yard of the hacienda, so why didn't she just run into the hacienda to get away from Ricardo? But she did know how to get down in the end!

Jardinera, thanks for recrap, brilliant and complete as always.
I did notice that when Fern was gazing at Libia's locket and flashing back to her murder, he had an odd expression on his face, not like he was enjoying the memory but just the opposite.
I hope Raqui went to her death honestly believing Fern "loved" their little steamy interludes. Poor thing.
"Creemelo"

Jardinera, thank you. I always love your recaps. And I miss seeing your smiling face in the sidebar. You had a picture up there a long time ago and then it disappeared. Can we have another one?

I actually thought Franco's singing was quite fine—suave & sexy— dubbed or not. The others...whew!! How can these actors allow it? Or is it simply a perverse form of verismo?

I'm loving every minute of the just deserts beginning to unfold. I'm hoping for a slow denouement with lots of deliciously drawn out retribution. It's our payback for hanging in there all these tedious months. Let the anvils fall!

Gawd, all the singing! It's turned into an off-key musical! And why0hwhy are they belaboring this henpecked Saul/Hortensia bisiness? Way too much filler. Did Raquel jump, or was she pushed?...I think that Raquel's money was hers from an inheritance separate from the one due the Tweedle Bros, and That dear Ricky cheated them out of that by whatever means...Those writers made Raqui look even more stupid that she had been- cofronting Ricky alone, with the papers in hand, running into the woods instead of the relative safety of the hacienda...I must have missed the scene where Oscar looked into the safe previously- how did that happen?..All the villans are starting to feel the pressure, I'm expecting lots of unexpected things to start happening. Anyway, things are heating up, a whole shipment of anvils has arrived...

Arounf the globe, dogs were howling in unison. I love E Y but I could live happily never having to hear him sing again. Give Adela the Premio for best actress....she managed to keep a straight face with E Y shouting offkey inches from her face.

Thamks for the humorous and informative recap Jaediners. GinCA

Sorry, Jardinera. Need to put in my contacts. GinCA

Fuego/Dorado dave: Raqui definitely wins the Darwin Award for having been one of the stupidist dim-wits in a novela to date.
==========
Hombre: Rip-snortin' is right and Juan had me snortin' the minute he ripped those melodies to shreds!
=======
GinCA: ITA about EY. The guy needs a manager with real pair! Somebody who could get away with asking him what in Hell ever convinved him he could or should sing in public, especially after that Destilando fiasco.
==========
Agnes: "...a perverse form of verismo" -- or a humbling line of small print in Jorge's large contract! But no complaints at my end about Pablo Montero, as long as he's being filtered by the studio's audio wizards. > ; ? )

Creemelo: Something tells me Raqui was certain Feo was just as high on her as she was on him. I don't think she had enough brain cells to know the difference. She certainly believed Rico all those years, at least till near the end.

Great recap, Jardinera, and thank you for it. I watched and was grateful again for the FFWD>>> button!

I, too, was howling during our Rogers & Hammerstein segment. Howling from laughter and pain at the same time.

Raquel definitely wins the dimwit award. All that hairspray affected her brain. I knew this would happen, because who goes running around in broad daylight or confronts your evil-doing enemies on your own?!? Hel-lo?!???

BTW, I believe Raquel lost her balance and that's what caused her to fall.

And .....If there is any semblance of a CSI team (ha!) part of Rico's snake applique should be found clutched in her hands. I watched it, frame-by-frame, to make sure about what I saw. The snake-head was ripped off when she fell backwards, leaving an empty spot on his upper arm of the jacket. We only need mutton-chops to figure that one out. Please?

doris

Doris, wasn't he threatening her by dangling her over the precipice? And she was begging him to pull her back up/not push her over?
"Creemelo"

Cree/ Doris: I thought so possibly but then she started with that screwy laugh and I thought she figured he would kill her anyway, so maybe she slipped and maybe she didn't care at that last second. So I went back and added doris's option, too.
> 8 ? }

Thanks for the recap Jardinera. It is fun watching anvils start to fall. I had hoped Raqui would have at least screamed. Then the brothers Reyes may have been able to stop her death. But as we know, she wasn't the brightest woman. It's unfortunate that her last episode had her acting beyond stupid in her solo confrontation with Darth.

As Agnes mentioned, it will be fun to watch the wicked having to stew a bit before they die. And the off-key musically was amusing. I just don't understand with the singers Uni has available why have those who can't try?

Great recap!

Okay, less singing more swimming. That was awful except for Franco.

Doris, I also thought she tore part of the jacket.

Molly in OR

Good one, Jardinera! I thought after Juan's first bit of singing: "Wow, did he take some singing lessons?" but after the second bit I thought: "He was more fun singing out of tune in Destilando when it cracked him up." And I too was perplexed when they had Oscar singing one song while loud instrumental music of some other kind entirely was blaring away. And another full moon! And Raquel: yes, by all means, carry priceless irreplaceable papers around with you and wave them in the faces of people who have a great deal to gain by destroying them. It's the land of no telephones and no xerox machines.

Okay guys I just had a brainstorm!!!
Remember how Feo confronted Darth a few weeks ago and accused him of causing the ruin of his (Feo's) parents? And Feo said "your parents were fools" etc etc.
Well! What if Feo is somehow related to the other side of the Uribe Family that Darth cheated out of their inheritance?
Does anybody see where I'm going with this?
Because remember Feo's snake tattoo?...
"Creemelo" Buahahahaha!!!!!

Thanks, Jardinera~~~That bedroom is Action Central....home to Sof and Ferd, then just Ferd for awhile , then Root [with Ferd visiting from time to time], and now Juan. You'd think that Ferd would be really nervous about Juan inhabiting the room where his safe holds proof of all his dastardly deeds, including Libia's necklace. However, Ferd has lots of selfconfidence and considers himself super smart. I can't wait to see how these crazy writers kill off the villains . As for Raquel, maybe she thought that she could fly.

Man, didn't see this one but what a recap! Even with off-key singing and maudlin lyrics sounds like this was a whopper of an episode.

Always enjoy your way with words, Jardinera..."truckasaurus" is a hoot. (I vote for option #2) and "for the love of Gawd who writes this stuff?" were also favorites.

You were having a great time writing this and it shows. Thanks amiga.

I forgot to add, Raquel's acting in this episode was down there with Flash Gordon c. 1938. And just when you thought Adele's face couldn't get any more insipid - it does. My opinion of EY has gone seriously downhill, but the brothers have gotten better, doncha think?

I agree my opinion of EY surely has gone downhill but so has my opinion of the hombre that plays Oscar. I thought he was rather good in La Virgen Esposa but the writers surely have made a fool of him here.

Karen: I wondered why couldn't Raquel just go with Juan to Puebla City to a lawyer right away-- guess Raqui couldn't ride double on Capricho and stay on..... I Juana Brain had none to suggest it, let alone to use Sofia to drive them there.....

I was actually rooting for Raquel for awhile, too, and hoping she'd come out of this but she'd slept with the Devil willingly and had to meet a nasty end. Best thing was the way she got Rico right where it hurts by pricking his ol' male ego and telling him how rotten he was in bed.
==========
Susanlynn: I was laughing at the end. Raqui reallly did look like she was flying through the air like a drunken Tinkerbell at the end. Looked like the crew were catapulting a wooden dummy to make the shot!

Melinama: "Raquel's acting in this episode was down there with Flash Gordon c. 1938" LOL! I'd say the musical production didn't even rise to those levels! "The Little Rascals" and Froggy did better jobs at both. Sad testament to how desperate we are to be "entertained" nightly and to the quality of Looneyvision's directors.

Molly: How about no more singing UNLESS they're in the shower?

=========
JudyB: Hubby swears these things are written with a lovelorn 14 yr. old mind. I'd add by frustrated wallflower would-be poets. I swear I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry with this one and with all the horse-braying and yowling/howling I admit I did both at the same time!

Hola Jardinera y compadres de C2 - Here I am in the middle of Mexico City enjoying reading the recaps of FELS, Tontas y Cuidado y Barbara and what do you think. Jardinera, you are in the stratosphere of recap heaven. I enjoy everyone's writing so much on this journey when I can't see the eposodes. I have followed the discussions abit but am really saddened that I didn't get to see Raquel and her silly red wig cast themselves off the cliff. Did the wig take off by itself or stay in place. Good glue? Do tell. This telenovela has taken magical realism to a new desperately whacky high or is it low...

I just got off the phone with Mariana Karr. I had hoped to go to her restaurant that some of you will remember I visited and saw her last year. Alas, Caray Caray the restaurant had some difficulties and was in such a precious building that they closed some months ago but plan ot re-open in a new spot in February. Alas, I won't be here but back in NewMex with Willa.

I think my Spanish is really improving since I could easily understand MK and she has a strong Argentine accent which I find one of the most difficult in the Spanish speaking mundo. She is wrapping up the filming of Juro Que Te Amo in a week or so then on to open the restaurant in new quarters. She was again so friendly and lovely and we spoke for 20 minutes or so. What a treat, I just had to share with all my CarayCaray buddies.

Cheryl: Wow! How lucky you are to have developed such a close relationship with one of our fav Uni actresses!! Your Spanish must be terrific for her to spend so much time speaking with you also!

Here is the link to Youtube if you want to watch the episodio.

However, if you just want to see the dramatic death scene, its 182.5

Que te vaya bien, amiga!

Jardinera - I think your DH is right. Mrs. Snyder's eight grade English class is writing this script. Either that or monkeys.

Cheryl - You got to meet Marianna Karr?!? Oh, how exciting!!! I hope you continue to have a great time down there in Mexico.

doris

Cheryl~~~Glad that you are enjoying your trip. Wow! I love Mariana Karr. She was so good in Alborado and Pasion. I am marking time with Fuego waiting for Fernando to return to the screen. I went out to dinner Saturday night with one of my best friends who teaches Spanish. She gets a big kick out of my addiction to the telenovelas. She just laughs and shakes her head when I talk about the funny names the recappers give the characters . I explained to her that it keeps me occupied and out of mischief. I could have worse obsessions .

CherylNewMex Meeting Mariana is like meeting someone from Hollywood on a personal basis. She is seen worldwide. Great to have those kind of connections. :)

Shall we raise a glsss of Tequila in honor of Raquel?

Ibarramedia

You guys are a tough crowd!

I thought the bad singing was done with a wink and a tongue in cheek, knowingly. Like no one expects them to be good but nevertheless charming in the attempt! They charmed me anyway. Granted, it doesn't take much from them. (singing in the shower or in the swimming hole would be super charming, good idea)

Loved the detailed re-cap, thanks. Aint it great now that things are really moving!!??

Poor lamb Raquel. I'm sure it was that wig that did it, to her brain I mean.

BTW, I want to share that I saw "Pepe El Toro"(1952) last night with Pedro Infante and though I didn't recongnize him at first, Joaquin Cordero as his freind. I saw these movies (a trilogy) because of Chachita from "Cuidado.." who was a young actress playing Pedro Infante's daughter.

Our Don Agustin almost stole the show from Pedro Infante, super attractive and expressive actor, muy simpatico. The movies are fun but be prepared for heaps of tragedy to go along with the comedy.

Next up, a couple Cantinflas movies, suggestions?

I thought Oscar's and Juan's singing was ear-hurtin' bad. Whether it was done with a wink or not, it wasn't fun.

Isn't it funny that the more awful Feo is to Gabi, the more desperate she is to hold onto him?

I never bought her story about "I've always needed to be loved," it doesn't make sense... in the first or second episode, shortly before Bernardo died, he complained that she hadn't been affectionate with him in a long time, and she basically told him that he was being disgusting.

Creemelo - interesting idea about Feo being related to Benito and Octavio. They didn't know him, but he could be from an estranged part of the family... still, it's interesting that Feo didn't thought-bubble about it at that time.

Lastly, Raquel's death - at first I thought she pushed off from the cliff, but on replaying it I saw three long scratches on the shoulder of his jacket. My guess - she was holding on for dear life, and slipped. I don't think he wanted her to fall just yet. He seemed genuinely miffed as she fell away from him!

As for the money thing - I think the money that Raquel has sole control over is from her own side of the family. It must be a nice chunk of change.

She never realized that Ricardo had no money of his own because she thinks he "bought" the Robles place. (She never showed the slightest sign of knowing he killed anyone, nor even that Gabi had given him that belt, so she must have showed up later on.)

I believe the nephew's inheritance is a separate issue having nothing to do with Raquel, other than that she's familiar with the will. I remember the nephews telling Jimena and Sarita that they couldn't get the inheritance until they got married, but Raquel seems to think that he should have given the money to them sooner.

So my guess is that they're legally entitled to it already; Ricardo can't access it himself but he and/or Raquel are responsible for letting the boys have it. (Executors, no pun intended.)

Ricardo probably made up that marriage rule hoping to get his nephews to marry the sisters so that he'd have a way to get to the Elizondo money too. Then he'd find a way to become the heir of all of that if the two adorable couples all happened to die in the same accident.

I had wondered why Raquel was worried that he would be angry when the nephews ended up not getting married. I wondered why he would care so much whether they got married to the ELizondos or not (Raquel didn't seem to know either). This would explain it. He was really keen to roll the Elizondo's fortune in with the Uribe fortune and then inherit both.

(I don't know why that subplot got dropped. I guess he's had his hands full trying to get the Robles hacienda back.)

Whatever little money Ricardo ever had on his own would be the stuff that he has personally stolen or swindled from the Robles, the Escandons, etc. That money must be long gone.

(Whew - sorry to be so long-winded... I'd been thinking about it all weekend, but didn't have time to write anything until tonight.)

Julie/Creemelo: Really like both your theories. Maybe both of you are on to something that will come out in the next few weeks.

As for Gabi needing love, it seems to me it all depends on what she considers "love", maybe rather than love she means some kind of slavering devotion with a nice chunck of sex mixed in to spice things up. Augie saw through her and gave her his own version of devoted parental love, but it was anything but slavering. On the other hand maybe his drinking irritated the hell out of her early on in life and then the accident and the death of her mother changed her emotionally and one disappointment after another, say Juanjo's rejection and the boring marriage to Bernie and that finally led her down that road of no return, i.e., with Rico and Soledad and the rest is herstory....

That helps Julie! Thanks for laying that out.

I've been watching the whole time...but as we all know, it's been a loooong time.

Randy: I won't say they weren't charming in the attempt, but I'll stop and go no further.....
> 8?}

Randy, I am charmed rather than gagged by the Reyez boyz singing. I have actually heard Juan/Eduardo sound pretty good and he is probably the least trained of the three crooners. At least watching this just from a little window in YouTube it was kind of sweet in all three cases and I definitely found it spoof level performances. In the interest of full disclosure, however, I must divulge that I forgot to pack my foil lined beanie and there are no branches of L.L. Beanie here in Mexidoon. So, you decide whether to believe me or not. I think I am too fanatic a fan of Eduardo Yáñez to ever be totally freaked out with whatever he does. By the way also, EY is always profoundly intelligent sounding in the interviews I have seen so I vote for bad script to defend my hero.

And thanks for the YouTube version of this episode, Jardinera, and she did keep the crazy wig on all the way down, must be some powerful glue.

Hey, Cheryl: glad the link worked down there for you. I will say that to give AN her due, 'though I have never heard EY due a public interview, I have heard Adela and she also sounded extremely impressive. I realize it's different strokes in play re: the Singing Amigos, but just for my money, 'though it doesn't wreck my respect for their acting talents --their ability to take me to and through a romantic land and time in a galaxy far, far, away -- somebody just needs to warn us so next time we can turn down the volume and simply put on the CC. As it was, I think the hubster and I were so incredulous and laughing so hard in between snarks, we were too impactados to find the remote, let alone hit the button.

fos:

Sorry, I missed your post. Welcome and WTA (we totally agree!)

Great recap Jardinera. Welcome to Fuego The Musical! I didn't get to see the whole thing this morning. I felt bad for Raquel. she wasn't really a bad person (she just had bad hair.) I hope Darth gets the snot kicked out of him before he dies.

JULIE - Those three long scratch marks you saw on his jacket (the sleeve, right?) are where the creepy snake was sewn on the sleeve and when Raquel grabbed the snake head on top 9of his shoulders, she ripped the whole thing off his jacket. My TV screen showed the distinct mark of stitching being ripped out. (I sew a lot, and know about this-LOL)
That's why I hope, when they find her body, she'll still be clutching a piece of that snake and the crackerjack CSI team (ha!) will put 2 + 2 together....and not come up with 3.

doris

Hey Randy, Have you noticed in any of the Cantinflas films that a very young and very beautiful María Sorté, aka Eva of the sobs, is Cantínflas' frequent girlie foil. She was a stunning beauty, didn't cry a lot in those days. Must be hard to be older and be given these silly woman who cries roles. I can't remember which of the C. films she has been in since they all basically seem the same to me. I think Cantínflas was the Jerry Seinfeld of his time with MUCH ado about nothing. But they are cheerful and fun and a chance to see the underdog triumph.

Woops - sorry, Doris! I missed that part of your comment about the applique! And when I was watching, I was so busy looking at the rip on his sleeve that I didn't realize I wasn't looking at a snake any more!

Glad you are having a good time, Cheryl, and able to keep in touch! What's it like to be someplace that isn't covered with snow? I don't remember!

As for Gabriela - she was already rotten before her mother died. In the flashback to the night of their accident, she was berating her mother for putting up with a drunkard of a husband. It was exactly the same self-righteous attitude she takes with people now.

And after the crash, she was pretty quick about moving her father to the front seat. She didn't pause to mourn for her mother. It was all about scapegoating others and protecting herself.

If I hadn't seen that, I would have assumed that the accident was what had changed her, but it seems to me that she must have already been that way. I know bad experiences can change people, but I don't think a brain can rewire itself that quickly!

Fortunately, she is irony-proof, or else she'd be horrified to realize that her mother being married to a drunk is nothing compared to Gabi being married to a thieving murderer.

You are so right Julie. I bet Crabi was born a selfish, abusive, hateful, manipulative, scumbag, ______(insert word of your choice).

This is a little off the subject but Pan's Labyrinth was on HBO this weekend. I think it is by the same guy that does Fuego. It is in Spanish with English subtitles. Besides it being a good movie it is interesting to note the difference in the Spanish spoken in the movie compared to what we hear on Fuego. They use the more formal Vos as compared to the Tu or Usted that we are used to.

On Premios Oye last night, they had a spoof of the 3 Reyes Brothers singing the Fuego en La Sangre song, with 3 comedians impersonating Franco, Oscar and Juan. But you know what? It wasn't nearly as funny as what we saw on the show Friday night, because the comedians somehow couldn't sing out of tune!

Ooo Jardinera, what a great idea! And a nice steamy shower is to good for the throat too.

Julie, remember Benito did have his ice cream stolen by Feo that one day. So if they are related, he already knows Feo is a jerk.

Feo is beyond a jerk. He's totally crazy but is attempting to hide it. He's not doing a bang-up job though. I sure hope that Darth and Feo cancel each other out. I'm not sure what should happen to Root. Darth wouldn't kill her, Feo might, Coyote no, Sophia--maybe. Hmmmm....

Jardinera, I really enjoyed your recap of a very good episode. I for one enjoyed the boys' gallant (if flawed) effort to serenade the chicas Elizondo. Perhaps I enhaned my appreciation by sipping a Pancho Villa while watching. However, I think that any effort, no matter how amateurish, at serenading is incredibly romantic. (Drat, could I be one of those metrosexuals?) Case in point, the serenade sequence in that charming movie Breaking Away. I must admit that the untimely (though not entirely unexpected) demise of Raquel was a downer. Perhaps she should have kept to herself that Ric was not a good lover. When will they ever learn? Carlos

Thanks for the recap as always. I do recall that everyone and their brother told Raquel that she should man up and confront Ricardo. When she said she was going to do so I don't recollect anyone offering their assistance: Juan, Coyote, etc.

Mutton chops won't be able to figure her death out, but I'll bet Coyote and his CSI team do!

Singing in the shower or in the river would be OK by me. Singing to the mujers - not so much...

Let's just be content that it's only the brothers that are singing, that las hermanas Elizondo aren't, too.

I think Juan did offer to help Raquel confront Ricardo at some point but she said that she had to do it herself. (Or, I could be dreaming.)

Thanks, Molly, for reminding me of the ice-cream-stealing incident. Like Feo isn't loathsome enough already!

I don't think Mutton chops could figure it out if there was a note pinned to the deceased naming the killer. With all the unnatural deaths that have been happenig around there you'd think they would begin to think hmmmm, something is not right here, who could be doing all this? But no......

Molly--I too had forgotten about the ice cream cone snatching...and didn't Feo end up throwing the cone on the ground like a spoiled baby?
BTW, instead of the off-key serenade, why didn't they just show 10 minutes of the the Hnos. Reyes kneading bread dough in their undershirts? I could get down with that~~~and no need for earplugs!
"Creemelo"

Creemelo, those pesky undershirts can get so darn hot! I think perhaps they should take them off and have a nice refreshing bucket bath. Whose got the soap!? :P

Doris, I just now saw your doggie picture. Very cute!

Really when you are hanging on the edge of a cliff it is not the best time to point out someone ain't packing. Okay, that isn't quite what she said, but with that attitude he is overcompensating for something!

Good one Connie. What a cute little dog, Doris, what's his/her name? Cheryl, I fell in love with MK's character during Alborada. Perhaps one of the few TN denizens who didn't need a shrink. I thought that she looked kinda sexy smoking those little cheroots, although I could have done without seeing her squatting on her chamberpot. By the way, Bonnie Belle is home and doing well, but the next 8 wks. are going to be a challenge. Carlos

Good to hear Carlos! Does she have to wear the dorky "Elizabethan collar?" My dog would bump into a wall and then backup and try again, bump into the wall, try again. How many times do they have to bump into stuff before they realize "Ok, I'll go a different way."

Connie, yes and she hates it. She cried (literally) till 4am Sat. night. She has to wear the collar for 2 wks. and stay confined for 8 wks. Thank goodness that Tequila comes in big jugs. Carlos

Ha! That's funny Carlos. You might want some earplugs so you don't have to listen to her. Poor baby!

I didn't get to see previews for tonight. Anything earth shattering?

Connie, my cat had to wear one and he would sit and stare out the window. He looked like he was suctioned cupped to the glass!

Now that's funny, Molly. I can just picture it. :P What if we all showed up to work with one of those on! That would be a hoot!

Carlos - that dog is our little Shih Tzu, Alex. We lost him over New Year's but he was sixteen years old and it was his time. He was the best dog, ever, but had CDS (dementia) the last 3 or 4 years of his life. I put him up there since everyone else is showing off their dogs. (grin) Now I have a photo of my most recent quilt.

Carlos: I was thinking of Bonnie Bell being at the vet's, but her loving the Hnos.' serenades when I started writing. LOL! Well, you have the link to the Youtube version and can play it for her now. I'm sure she'd love to chime in....
=========
I'd have a dog too, guys but the hubster refuses. So it's two cats instead. But, I do think the pictures of them all are really adorable. I had a little black and white Boston Bull when I was a kid.
========
Molly: good catch about the ice cream cone. I totally blanked on that one.
============
Teresita: Coyote's CSI I think will be on the job tonight from what I saw of the previews.
=========
Connie: "I don't think Mutton chops could figure it out if there was a note pinned to the deceased naming the killer." LOL! I think Coyote should run for his job if he finds her tonight.
============
Ibarramedia: "Shall we raise a glsss of Tequila in honor of Raquel?" --Yes! Con cara de doble.........

Connie there are people here who would be quite happy if I wore a safety collar at work!

My kids and I were trying them on one day at Petsmart.
