Doña Bárbara - Fri., March 20- Santos lives up to his name; Gonzalo is arrogant and Antonio is insubordinate

Christian Meier fans - Meier's 2005 novela, La Tormenta, will be rebroadcast on Telemundo starting Monday at 1pm on the East Coast.

Marisela tells Gonzalo that she wants to forget all the unhappiness she has experienced up to now. She asks Gonzalo to help her. Gonzalo says that nothing would make him happier. That is what he wants above everything.

Santos finds out from Genoveva that Marisela was happy when she got up in the morning. Carmelito reports that Marisela made a mad dash to the boat and then it left. Santos is sure that Marisela saw him and DB in the clinch. He is angry that this happened when things where going so well between him and Marisela.

DB tells Eustaquia that she isn't going to chase after Santos but he will continually be aware of her trail, her actions, her scent. She wants her name in his ears every day. She says that she will make him need her and she will learn not to need him so much herself. Then DB indulges in a fantasy about how wonderful the birth of her baby will be and how amazed Santos will be at the kind of mother DB can be. She says that when Eustaquia gets better, they will go to San Fernando and buy clothes for the baby and decorate the baby's room.

Santos looks at the empty riverbank and says to himself that Marisela can't be so far away after the wonderful nights that they spent together (flashback). Santos goes on to say that he won't forget Marisela and will continue to fight for their love.

Marisela asks Gonzalo to be patient and give her more time. He says that is no problem. He says that his love for her isn't a game or a passing fancy. He will wait until she feels comfortable with him. He asks her to trust him and to forget everything that has happened before she came to San Fernando. He asks her to think about the life they will have together. "I will try," replies Marisela, "That's all I can promise - that I will try." When Marisela is gone, Gonzalo says that he has defeated Santos. He doesn't know what Santos did but he is grateful.

Pajarote comes to see Genoveva but she tells him to go away. He tells her that she is the only one for him but Geno has seen him cozying up to Celeste Mondragon.

Tigre is in the bar of the hotel with Leoncia and Celeste. Federica and Josefa greet him but Tigre doesn't respond and hustles his women out. Federica says that the next time he comes, he will have to pay double for the insult.

Pajarote asks Genoveva if they are or are not friends. She says that she doesn't see a future in being his friend because he is a flirt (resbaloso) who goes after every skirt he sees. She tells him not to come and see her until he calls her by a name she likes better, such as 'engaged' or 'marriage'. She throws him out of her kitchen.

DB tells her baby what a great guy his father is. She says that she has never loved anyone so much and that is why he will return. She imagines how wonderful their life will be all together.

Santos goes to San Fernando and gets the guard to tell Gonzalo that he is Andrés. When Santos comes into the dining room, Gonzalo asks what he is doing there pretending to be Andrés. Santos says that Gonzalo probably wouldn't have let him otherwise. He asks if Gonzalo is going to have the guards throw him out by force so that Marisela can see what kind of person he is. Santos tells Gonzalo once again that he is a traitor who has lost his ideals in seeking power. Santos says that he has come to speak to Marisela. The guys almost come to blows and Marisela says that she will talk to Santos outside. As he leaves, Santos says that Gonzalo disgusts him and Gonzalo says that he feels sorry for Santos.

Outside, Marisela tells Santos that he did wrong in coming and worse in pretending to be Andrés. Santos says that he wants to explain to her... Marisela interrupts and says that she doesn't want explanations. Santos tells Marisela that it was DB who embraced him at the factory and he couldn't avoid it. Marisela tells him not to bother. Neither he nor DB matter to her anymore. She tells him to go away. She wants to go to bed. "Marisela," Santos calls after her, "I love you." Marisela goes back inside without a word. Santos asks the guard if he wants to make some easy money and assures him that what he wants the guard to do isn't illegal.

Cecilia has cartons of books belonging to the Luzardo family that were sent from the Capital to Altamira and are now in Cecilia's house in Progresso. When Casilda says that there are enough books her to open a library, a lightbulb goes off in Cecilia's head. She says that Casilda is a genius. There is no library in Progresso. She will open one with these books.

A montage of dialog-free scenes indicate that two weeks have passed.
Pajarote brings a balloon to Genoveva but she pops it with a knife.

The new library is about to open and Andres has published the first edition of the newspaper. Dr. Arias says that Progresso is progressing and Andrés says that has only one name - Santos Luzardo. Santos modestly demurs.

A nice shot of Santos.

When DB gets a blanket to put on Eustaquia, she finds the picture of the rapists. She says that they are all dead except Sapo.

Gonzalo sees Marisela getting her daily rose.

Gonzalo asks if this is how she is keeping her promise to forget Santos. She asks if he is spying on her. He says that has he doesn't need to spy on her to know that she accepts a flower and a note every day from Santos. Marisela says that is her business and it's only a flower. Gonzalo replies thats gifts of flowers have meanings. He says that her acceptance of these ridiculous gifts from Santos indicates that she still has feelings for him. He suggests that the best thing would be to throw the flowers in the trash. He moves towards the flowers and she tells not to dare to touch them. They're her flowers and she will decide what to do with them.

Eustaquia tells DB to tear up the photo and close that chapter of her life. She should start a new beautiful life with her child. DB says that is what she is doing; living day to day waiting for her baby and and the love of her life to return. She tells Eustaquia not to ask her to forget about the rapists. She says that she only needs to get rid of one more of the bastards to free her from so much pain. "They all paid with their lives," she tells Eustaquia, "and Sapo won't be the exception."

Gonzalo tells the guard that if he sees him bringing flowers to Marisela again, he will be fired from his job and Gonzalo will make sure that he never works in any government agency again. Antonio overhears this.

Facundo gives Sapo the information for his interview with Gonzalo. He tells Sapo that he and Gonzalo have an acquaintance in common - the Minister of Communications. Sapo tells Facundo to get a letter of introduction from the Minister of Communications. He says that the time has come for him to meet this little son (hijito) of mommy and daddy.

Antonio tells Gonzalo about his upcoming schedule. Gonzalo says that he wants to take time on the weekend to go on vacation with Marisela. Antonio points out that Gonzalo has received invitations to various events in Progresso - the grand opening of the milk processing plant, a new library and a newspaper. Gonzalo is surprised that the newspaper has become a reality since he hasn't spoken to Andrés about it. Antonio says that it would appear that they found support from some other place because Gonzalo's office never provided any. Gonzalo says that he sent Santos' proposal to experts for analysis. Antonio tells Gonzalo that he doesn't have to lie, he knows that the proposal hasn't left the office. It was just been filed away.

Dr. Arias comes to see Eustaquia. He tells DB that she isn't getting better and he fears the worst. DB says that she will do anything, pay anything to save Eustaquia. Dr. Arias says that the only thing he can do is order more specialized tests that would have to be done in San Fernando. DB says she will take her there but her viejita can't die.

Gonzalo asks Antonio how he dares to say that Gonzalo filed the papers. Antonio says who else would have put them in the file drawer. Gonzalo asks how Antonio came to be looking in that file drawer. Antonio replies that he was looking for something else and found them by accident. Gonzalo accuses Antonio of sticking his nose in his personal business. Antonio says that he tells things as they are- Gonzalo doesn't want anything to do with Progresso and even less to do with Santos Luzardo. Antonio goes on to accuse Gonzalo of acting out of jealousy and mentions his reprimand of the guard who brought Marisela flowers. Gonzalo replies that Antonio's job is to keep quiet and do what he is told. Antonio says that he always says what he sees and if Gonzalo doesn't like that, he can take Antonio's job and give it to someone else. Antonio says that his friends and family come before any job and Santos is like a brother to him. At this moment, Marisela comes into Gonzalo's office and ask if they are arguing.

Santos and Juan Primito are eating mangoes. Santos tells JP that he wants to bring Marisela some mangoes but Cecilia told him to wait a while. Santos asks JP's opinion. JP agrees with Cecilia saying that Marisela gets furious when she is interrupted after she has asked to be left alone. JP asks Santos to take him to San Fernando to give Marisela some mangoes if she doesn't return to Progresso soon.

Gonzalo tells Marisela that they weren't arguing. He apologizes to Antonio and tells him to say what he feels and says that it won't happen again. When Antonio leaves, Marisela asks what they were fighting about. Gonzalo says that it was not a big deal but Marisela doesn't believe him. Gonzalo says that it was nothing they can't solve and nothing that Gonzalo can't forget out when Marisela is by his side.

Melesio is angry with Altagracia. Genoveva and Melesia ask him why and he says that it is because the alcaraván is calling again and Melesio is sure it is because María Nieves has gotten Altagracia pregnant.

Melesio says that he will solve the problem and goes for his shotgun. Geno looks thoughtful. [Why haven't MN and Altagracia gotten married already?]

Eustaquia doesn't like the hospital in San Fernando. She says that it is cold and expensive. DB says that Eustaquia has to get better so she can help with the baby since no one, including the baby's father, will come near her as if she had the plague. DB says that she doesn't need anyone but Eustaquia. Eustaquia is her mother. Together they can take on the world and get this baby thing going (sacaremos a este bebé adelante). She tells Eustaquia to be good and do what she is told.

Sapo comes for this appointment with Gonzalo and sees Marisela, "Look who we have here," he says. He tells Facundo that he met Marisela in a clothing store where she refused a gift from him. "You were [he uses the familiar form of the verb] unfriendly and arrogant. You remind me of someone that I knew a long time ago. Someone I can't forget. Someone whom I had to tame (amansar) by means of affection (a punta de cariño)."
[Why are these bad guys so short? Meléndez was a runt, too.]

Iciliy, Marisela asks if he is Fidel Castell and when says that is who he is, she asks him not to use the tú form of the verb to her (no me tutee) and that her name is Señorita Barquero. Antonio comes in and asks if everything is ok and Marisela says that there is no problem. These men have come for their appointment with Gonzalo.

Gonzalo welcomes Sapo and sends Antonio out to get coffee. Sapo says that this is a courtesy visit to get to know the Governor. Gonzalo says that he isn't the Governor. Sapo says that he could be Governor in a short time and take the reins of this state or isn't that what he wants.

The ternera husbands and future husbands are sitting around talking about how Santos has almost ruined Altamira by supporting everyone else's projects. Melesio appears with his shotgun and says that now all María Nieves does is talk. He hasn't made Altagracia an honest woman and the alcaraván is singing again.

Mujica offers a pompous toast to Santos: "May your pacifying and philanthropic labors endure forever. And let's hope that they fall like the softest and most refreshing downpour on the worst days of summer." Dr. Arias agrees that since Santos came to Progresso, there have been many important changes such as the fact that Pernalete has trimmed his ambitions and is acting according to the law. Mujica is called away and Dr. Arias says that Santos seems more enthusiastic and interested in life. When Santos asks if he was ever otherwise, the doctor says that not long ago, he was afraid Santos would become an alcoholic like his cousin Lorenzo because of DB. Santos replies that it wasn't DB. He refused to see his own mistakes but when he finally accepted them, he went on with his life. He asks Arias how DB is doing. "Ay, Santos!" says Arias, "You are still interested in that woman? Don't tell me that you want to go back to her."

Antonio tells Marisela that he has brought coffee to the 'Governor.' He says that he doesn't like the high-handed way Gonzalo behaves with outsiders. Both he and Marisela have left the office when DB comes in.

Sapo tells Gonzalo that he wants to invest in this area and needs the support of government officials that are eager for development and determined like Gonzalo. That is why he and his assistant have come to visit. Sapo ends the visit and says that Gonzalo will hear from him very soon.

DB is snooping around Marisela's desk. She finds the flowers and Santos' notes to Marisela. She says that Santos sends flowers to Marisela and not to her. Marisela comes in and asks what DB is doing there. "He loves you," says DB crushing one of the roses, "He loves you more than me."

Thanks Jean! I'm just now catching up on DB and your past couple of recaps. I like the picture of Melesio, he looks fed up. As you note, why haven't MN and Altagracia gotten married yet? I wonder if the alcaravan is singing for Altagracia or for another unmarried ternera?

I like the character development of Marisela. She has turned into a strong heroine who doesn't let people push her around.

I thank you again for that nice shot of Santos. Also, I recommend La Tormenta. That novela was a lot of fun, romantic and sexy. It run long and it drags at times but that is true about most telenovelas anyway.

I'm pretty sure that it is Genoveva who is pregnant and that Altagracia and Maria Nieves haven't gotten married just so we could have this story about everyone focusing on Altagracia and MN while Geno and Pajarote resolve their relationship.

I also think that Santos is going to have money problems that are going to be exploited by Sapo or DB. We have gotten hints - Santos going through piles of bills; the vaqueros saying that Santos is running his hacienda into the ground supporting everyone else's projects. Let's not forget about the oil.

And do we think Marisela has gotten pregnant from having sex with Santos? If DB weren't already three months along, I would be sure of it and they would deliver at the same time and there would be some baby switching or kidnapping but who knows?

There are so many babies in this novela!! When the soldiers were searching for the rebels who were hiding under the terneras' beds, we saw that all the terneras (except Gervasia, I think, who was married then) slept in the same room. Now there are three married couples, two unmarried terneras, Melesio and three babies all living in Melesio's little house!

Good points Jean. Even though they all live so closely together they are unusually unaware of Genoveva and Pajarote's underground love affair. I suppose they are just too busy with their own babies. Maybe with all those babies the family is severely sleep deprived.

I was wondering about Marisela too. Has she shown any of the classic TN symptoms yet?

Jean, your photos are fun! Thanks for the detailed recap, too. I think your guesses are right. I'm thinking Marisela will be pregnant. Doesn't the heroine get pregnant the first time she has sex?

I like that Marisela has a spine. But, she's vacillating between common sense and impetuous immature reactions. Average for her age, I suppose.

Gonzalo has the same denial syndrome that DB has. He gets the same wide eyed look when he's caught red handed. Then of course he lies.

Looks like DB's church lessons are really taking hold ;-} DB's thirst for vengence hasn't been tamed one bit. At least she's finally figured out that Santos loves Marisela more...

Cap'n Sylvia, I guess the only symptom she has shown is mood swings :p

Heh, heh. Mood swings is about it. No fainting or nausea or wanting to eat green mangoes. No alcaravans singing so far.

Hmm... La Tormenta, eh?

Will have to check that out. Thanks for the tip!
