MEPS, Tuesday 6/23 (#91): Girls Just Wanna Have a Baño That Isn't Haunted

Click graphics to enlarge.
Some scenes are consolidated for narrative convenience.

Rerun of Barb coming back to the table where Gonzo is sitting alone. He's bummed out because his family is desmoronando (falling apart). What would happen to him without her dedication and love? She rewards him with one silent tear of joy and clutches him to her bosom.

Rerun of Aurora cleaning the full-length mirror with "Auxilio" on it. She's praying just to be on the safe side. Santi comes by. Aurora washes her hands before coming out to greet him and acts like nothing happened. She asks him about the dinner. He was mystified by it.

Aurora wants the two of them to take off. He asks if it's because she's bored. No, she says, his family is very nice, but she feels like she's in the way. She'd like to go someplace where she can work and go to school. He'd like that too, but they should wait. He promised Fer he'd stay, and he can't let her down.

Warner Music Group made YouTube remove the audio from the second segment of episode 91 because they didn't give permission for a song to be on YouTube, so I miss some of this part of the Aurora/Santi scene. It went by too fast on TV. Basically, Aurora wants to do something (maybe she's still trying to talk him into going away). Santi tries to talks mushy, but Aurora asks how much longer they need to stay. Worried by her attitude, he asks if there's something he doesn't know. Is she uncomfortable living here? She says she's uncomfortable having to hide her "origins." He knows his stepmom asks a lot of questions. He tries to get Aurora excited about the cheese fair. This seems to help. Now he'll leave her to rest for the evening. Goodnight. He leaves. She looks nervous.

Martina is grating cheese. Venus is pooped. It's hard, complicated work all day long learning to be genteel. Martina tells her not to whine. Venus demonstrates that she has learned the proper way to sit down and asks about Martina's father. He's doing fine. Martina tells Venus about her date with Dr. Carlos. They're novios! Venus is happy for her and supportive.

FrEd takes Lili to her new home, which looks like it might be part of a duplex or a condo complex. It's huge and luxurious and filled with flowers. (Not Miraflores.) Lili is stunned. Fernanda shows up, but approaches a little too fast. Lili is nervous and backs away. At a nod from FrEd, Fer tries again, approaching more slowly for a hug. Lili loosens up and returns the hug.

Fer shows Lili to her new bedroom. Lili loves it. FrEd gloats he knew she'd like a room with ventanales (big windows). Fer is grateful. He tells her that their mission is just starting and excuses himself to do an errand.

Fer serves tea to Lili. Lili asks about a CD. Fer plays it for her; it's Beethoven's Für Elise. Then Lili finds another CD she likes: Cyndi Lauper. Fer puts it in the machine.

Lili warms up, dancing slowly at first. She picks up a remote control and starts singing softly into it as she flashes back to when she danced to this song (which was already old then) as a kid, jumping on the bed and throwing pillows. She hands a spoon to Fer, and they begin low-tech game of Air Karaoke Hero. Their voices become stronger, and soon Lili is jumping around on the furniture and flinging pillows just like the kid she was in her flashback.

Afterwards, Fer fans Lili with a silver platter. (My sister and I have to make do with a crappy melamine platter. And a fan.) Lili wants to do it again. Fer says no, yes (i.e. okay, but not now).

Lili asks for Ed. Fer says he's gone. Lili is confused and asks where did he go? Fer sadly says that he's gone far away. Misunderstanding, Lili insists that he's nearby, caring for them. Fer, also misunderstanding, is touched by Lili's seemingly deep understanding of death.

It's dinnertime at Las Animas. Estiv is at the head of the table, flanked by Venus and Martina. FrEd comes home. Venus offers him dinner. He asks if Martina is ready to get the best news ever: Lili is out of the clinic; she's in her new home and asking for her. Martina goes for her jacket. Venus is sad to see Martina go, but FrEd says she's going too. Venus asks if that's the end of their classes. Estiv says no, and more that I miss thanks to no sound in this portion on YouTube. Venus answers excitedly, and then answers again in the fine-folks way.

Aurora gets a nightgown out of a drawer and heads for the bathroom. The bedroom door rattles. Is it a ghost? Aurora invites the doorknob-rattler in. It's Santi. Ha ha, hilarious, but in all fairness he doesn't know about the second mirror incident. He jokingly scolds her for inviting him in without asking who it is. He jokes about being a ghost who's dying of love for her. Kisses. Then he leaves her alone in her room.

She goes into the scary haunted cavernous bathroom and looks nervously at the mirrors. Yep, they're still clean. Then she hears an owl, or at least I think it sounds like an owl, but maybe it's supposed to sound like a ghost. Perhaps it is Moaning Myrtle. Aurora closes the window, but the sound persists.

Someone is lurking outside the window, dressed in a raggedy black costume and rattling chains. Er, I mean a scary figure is rattling chains, oh noes!! I catch a glimpse of the person's feet, but not enough to guess whose feet they might be. (Maybe it's the maid, or maybe it's Camilo doing double-duty on Operation Aurora.) In any case, the ghostly figure is wasted for now, because Aurora doesn't look. But she's nervous enough about the rattling chains.

Too bad they use modern toilets, because this would be a great time to empty the chamber pot.

Barb is muttering in front of her computer, impatiently waiting for Damian to write back. Damian's looking at his computer too, her last message: "Tell me the time and place. This is your last chance to get your life back. I guarantee you won't be sorry." Damian mutters "No, Barbara, this time things are going to be my way. You'll pay with your own flesh for what you did to me."

FrEd comes back to Lili's place with Martina and Venus. Martina and Lili reunite joyfully; Marti introduces Venus. I can't remember if Lili ever met Venus during her brief stay at the Big Cups, but they seem to hit it off now. Lili can't wait to show them her bedroom.

Alone in the living room with FrEd, Fer tells him how grateful she is to see Lily smile again. FrEd says she deserves it. He owed it to the Jinete of Justice. Fer has to leave, but Lili is so happy she doesn't want to spoil the moment by saying goodbye. She heads for the door, but FrEd asks her not to go.

She asks if he wants her to stay with Lili. He says no; she'll be fine with Martina and Venus. He wants Fer to stay so that he can prolong this moment of happiness at her side. She agrees, and they kiss. Easy kisses, this time. She says she's not offended; she's happy. It was a great show of caring, she says, smiling. And then she leaves!

Aurora comes down the stairs, upset. Babs just happens to be there to intercept her. "It happened again!" Aurora exclaims. She tells her about the bloody writing on the mirror. (I don't hear her say anything about the spooky noises outside.) Babs consoles her, but do I see Aurora throw a suspicious look over her shoulder? Eh, probably not.

Babs tells Aurora she knows what she's feeling. Aurora thinks Santi can help her find out who's doing this. Babs says go ahead, but he won't believe you. The same thing will happen to Aurora that happened to Babs. Santi and the rest of the family will think she's hallucinating, but Babs wants Aurora to know she's not alone. She can count on Babs.

Aurora wonders why this is happening to her. Babs says she wondered the same thing, but the padre told her that only sensitive people like them can have paranormal experiences. It's a pain from her past... the soul is searching desperately for help. "Why'd it choose me?" Babs says that, for example, maybe it's Aurora's mother. Aurora is impactada.

Aurora thinks she can solve the problem by leaving the hacienda. Babs disagrees and says it will follow her wherever she goes. That's what happened to Babs.

She asks Aurora to come back and talk to her about this whenever she wants to, because now they share a secret. "I see you not as my stepson's novia, but as my own daughter.

"Calmer now?" Babs asks. "Yes, ma'am," Aurora replies. "Please don't call me that - call me Barbara. Now we are united by a secret." "Thank you Barbara, excuse me." Aurora leaves.

"Mustia infeliz, your hell is just beginning," Barbara says to herself. Last week, I translated "mustia infeliz" as "pathetic loser." This week, let's go with "pitiful twerp" or "miserable pipsqueak."

Damian is at his computer, gloating to himself. "We will tantear el terreno (literally, feel out the ground, i.e. test the waters), my dear Hyena." Babs is getting impatient, but finally gets his emailed reply. "When I get proof that the charges against me have been withdrawn, then you'll have the good fortune to see me." This seems to please her, but here comes Gonzo. She closes her laptop and tells him she was catching up on email.

Gonzo asks what's worrying her. "Fernanda." He's worried too. She's changed. He plans to have a talk with her. Babs says (I think) that women sometimes don't want to discuss things that they think others will find silly. He knows that she's probably upset about the scandal over Damian, but he doesn't understand why she's taking it out on them. Babs says that Fer probably blames them for what happened. If they – that is, Anibal - hadn't turned Damian in to the police, they could have cleared things up with an internal investigation. But now there's no chance she can reconcile with her spouse.

But Gonzo says they had proof against Damian. Babs says she now has proof he's actually innocent! Babs explains the evidence that proves Damian's innocence. It goes by too fast to catch it all, but it has something to do with a credit card that was used to put down a deposit of exactly $3 million for some kind of cheese-making machine. I guess it was all just a wacky mixup! The company is willing to give them their money back.

Fer comes in and says that Erika is fine – she was depressed, but she's better now. She apologizes to Gonzo for the way she spoke to him earlier. He says he wants to talk later, but not now, about giving away his loot during his lifetime. Fer kisses him goodnight, but walks right past Babs. Babs says goodnight. Fer nods coolly in response. Babs asks if Erika was at home. Fer says yes. Babs thought perhaps Erika had gone to the doctor(?). Fer says no, she didn't feel like going out, and leaves.

"See, Gonzalo? Fernanda's different." Gonzo wants to help Fernanda. Babs says they must repair their error; they shut all the doors against Damian, but they need to make it up to her. They have to reopen those doors by withdrawing the charges against Damian. Gonzo agrees, but first he wants to get their money back. Babs will take care of it. He is grateful. She says she just wants Fer to be happy. When Fer gets back her confidence in Damian, she'll also regain her faith in Gonzo. Gonzo is full of gullible gratitude.

Aurora is just getting ready to go to bed when a shadowy figure passes her window. She sinks to the floor, panting in terror.

Fer is going to bed. Will a ghostly visitor pass her window? She prays to Virgencita to give thanks for FrEd getting Lili out of the manicomio. She sees a photo of her mother and asks Virgencita's help in keeping her mouth shut about Babs being a murderer. "I promised Franco... please help me keep my promise!"

FrEd arrives at home and thinks about the evening's kisses. "Fernanda, mi amor. Your lips have shown me that you feel something profound for me."

Camilo is playing with his horsey. Jacinto rides up on his bitchin' bike. Camilo taunts him. "I got down from my horse because I want you to understand perfectly what I'm going to tell you. So listen up good, loser Indian. Tell your patrón Franco Santoro - because he is your patrón, right? – good, so we understand each other, fool - tell Santoro that I, Camilo Elizalde, know he has control of my father's car. And he can do whatever he wants with it!"

(I can't wait to find out what FrEd wants to do with it!)

FrEd and Estiv discuss the birth certificate. FrEd has no idea what relationship could have existed between his mom and Bravo. Steve reminds him that Bravo hired Manzanares and tried to kill Padre Bosco. FrEd remembers that before his mother's death, she spoke of an enemy and mentioned the enemy again in a letter. Estiv says you don't have to be a great detective to know that Bravo's the big enemy.

FrEd wonders why his mother kept the birth certificate hidden in that box. What was she trying to tell him with this? The certificate says that Artemio is the son of Ana Gregoria Bravo and an unknown father. Estiv says this line of their investigation is closed off, but FrEd thinks the only person who might know anything about this, based on the dates in that certificate, is Bosco. And something about "a shadow of evil that weighs on all of us."

The padre is looking at his Bible. Artemio Bravo, the Face of Evil, enters the room. "Hello, Padre Bosco. I've come from far away. Tell me if this is a bad time." The padre asks, "How can I help you?" Bravo replies, "I want to confess." (The padre looks nervous. Does he recognize Bravo, or just sense that this guy is trouble? I can't tell!)

Next time:
Babs acts like a jerk.

Vague, non-spoilery YouTube advances: Gardenia is in a bad mood. A confession gives me flashbacks to FELS. Babs pays a dreaded visit.

Hi Julie. You are amazing. Not only are your custom publications too, too clever but your whole recap has a journalistic feel to it. Way to go. Thanks for the hilarious recap and visual aids.

Thanks! I had been working on those magazine covers for a few weeks, but couldn't finish any of them in time for last week's recap. Finally, I was happy with all of them except for Daffy Daddy, but I gave up fighting with that one and put it up anyway. :-)

Well thank YOU! I know all your hard work will be greatly appreciated by we, your fans. I was trying to choose my favorite but it's impossible.

Oh Julie...you've outdone yourself. What fun. Loved all the magazine covers but Damian's two were my favorites. "When Mom gets nosy"...
"7 best cell phone replacement plans just in case"....all the quips about unwanted guests and "huge subscriber base"...gad! my stomach hurts I laughed so much.

Loved the Fernanda/Franco kisses and the goofy 7th grade smiles they both got (I fear I'm still a 7th grader at heart) and yes, I think Lili did meet Venus at Big Cups. Venus was in charge of putting on her tart makeup and then helped her escape.

Breakfast is my favorite meal and you made it even better with this awesome recap. Thanks amiga.

Thanks for the recap Julie. You are too awesome for words! My favotites are the Damian ones! I almost spit coffee on my computer. Not too bad of an episode really. What exactly was Esteve wearing. It looked like some kind of short-sleeved shirt with a sweater maybe? I couldn't tell.

I used to feel sorry for Abora but no more. She is just retarded. Instead of cowering in the corner how about opening the window and find out who is out there?

Gonzo is pretty stupid too. I don't feel sorry for him either.

Loved the Lili scenes. I hope she can find some peace and happiness in her new home. Do you think she realizes that it was bought for her and she owns it?

Julie: you way too funny!!!! and creative. Man, I feel so inadequate.

Hopefully, tonight's episode will be a new day in MEPS. I'm getting sick of Babs' crushed velvet Huggy Bear Pimp Wear from the 1970s. And Fer's girl scout dress in that horrid shade of brown...but she's so beautiful, she can actually make it look ok. She would look awesome in royal blue. Wardrobe...stat!!!!

So how long with the old guy linger at the bottom of the hill?

Lili is free!!! Yeah! Here's hoping there's some house calls from a competent doctor to help her heal. But why was Martina back in her nurse's uniform? No need to pretend any more, right? [beanie adjustment]

Abora is just too...too...oh, I don't know...stoooopid? naive? cloyingly sweet? Why would she go to Babs? Why would she automatically think she's insane?

And why is the whole freakin' family still living at home?

Maggarita
:-P

Lili's place does look like a condo. There is a garage next door with a white station wagon in it, so I assumed it was a condo.

The stupid fantasma scene with Santiago & Aurora & he knows about the bloody cross or at least what Aurora said about it.

Flashback to FELS, Aurora tells the one responsible about what is happening to her.

If Gonzo would use a couple of his limited watts, he would realize Babs explanation is highly implausible. If A cheese machine was purchased, why wouldn't he stay & explain it?

I did hear Babs mention sth about an acct in the Cayman's, did anyone catch that?

Wow! Julie, this was a spectacular recap! I loved the magazine covers, and I also loved your witty commentary, lines like "Too bad they use modern toilets, because this would be a great time to empty the chamber pot" and "Camilo is playing with his horsey." ¡Muchísimas gracias!

Variopinta, I did here something about the Caymens but wasn't sure who she was talking about. Damian I would guess. Maybe she set up some kind of account in his name and put the money in there? I didn't get it either.

We discussed a while ago the seemingly unnecessary uses of quedar & llevar, probably as intensifiers.
JudyB, I think it was you that asked for an example, finally I have one.

Se llevó tal disgusto que no vino a mi fiesta. - She was so upset she didn’t come to my party.

I would have used estuvo instead of llevó.

Julie, awesome recap and totally awesome mag covers. Priceless! Daffy Daddy was perfect.

Around these parts, we would say that Aurora is dumber than a box of rocks. Gaaaaahhhhh . . . I FFWD--> through all those scenes.

Martina will be working overtime, taking care of Lili in that gorgeous(!!!) humongous place. At least at the manicomio the meals were already cooked & served and housekeeping did the cleaning. I have a verrrry uneasy feeling about putting Lili in that condo.

Has Fernanda ever questioned FrEd's interest/obsession over helping Lili? And what kind of help will she get in the mini-mansion? I thought Stockholm was the preferred destination. Lack of passport?

Julie, Julie, excellent recap, even if you hadn't done the mag covers, they were over the top! Great way to start the day.
Using youtube, that second segment was pretty worthless, thanks for filling in the silence. Comcast is installing cable on Monday- geat deal-$20 tv, $20 high speed internet, $5 instal, no contract... we'll see...

Abora- enough said. At least her being terrorized allows her to show that she is breathing.

There is starting to be some decent chemistry between Eddy and Fer. How is Eddy gonna thell her that he is not Franco, or is Lili (FREE AT LAST! Well for now, anyway) going to spoil it? And, yes, Lili and Venus had already met, the continuity people must be on vacation.

why did Jacinto show up at Cad's horsey arena? Does he still have a job there, or did he just need his psychological beat-down fix for the day? That condescending ratbastard got in only 3 abject insults that I could determine. He did get off his horsey, tho. 'Cinto should flatten him.

Gonzo- grow some grye matter and synapses...

Julie, too funny, your cover on Damian couldn't have been more perfect. I was trying to figure out where you got this magazine for only 98 cents. Loved the cell phone plans.
You are a clever girl.

I'm very afraid those ventanales are going to be a problem for Lili. Fr/Ed should have put one of his ESWATS at Lili's. Con permiso, have to go get my beanie

Make tha GREY matter.

Babs' explanation involving the $3M in the Caymans account/cheese machine suppliers didn't make sense to me, either. I think it was to further show how stupid and gullible Gonzo is. Still a long way from explaining why Damain went AWOL.

Where IS Marcario? have the zopilotes already picked his bones? If we don't see that, what was the point of that whole thing?

Wow, great recap Julie. Fantastic work!

Hmm, so Ed is going to Padre Bosco to learn stuff about Artemio Bravo, but AB is going to confess stuff to the Padre and the Padre will not be able to tell Ed anything? Shades of FELS!
But, perhaps we'll learn something anyway. :)

Jule, wonderful recap and fantastic magazine covers and advise column. My favorite was the old guy's Daffy Daddy. "Seriously, where am I?" almost hits uncomfortably close to home. You really cracked me up this time.

Never in a million years would I have thought that Girls Just Want To Have Fun would make me tear up. That may be one of my favorite TN scenes ever. At last Lil is free. I'm sure the writers have not finished abusing her, but at least she gets to take a breath of fresh air.

Carlos

Julie, Thanks for the wonderful recap. The magazine covers were great, I'm still chuckling. You are very creative!

I found the Lili scenes and the Lili/Fer scenes very touching. I enjoyed how proud and happy Fr/Ed was as well--he knew he had done good. The Fr/Ed and Fernanda kiss was very sweet.

Now Abora and the Abora/Babs scenes--aBORING!

But all in all, because of the Lili in her new home story line I thought it was a very good episode.
Barbara

please, no more about the Fer/Lili reunion dancing scene. I had to watch it w/o sound, and I knew that it would have been really fun. As it was...

Damian's magazine was my favorite, and I spent the most time on it. I could have gone on for pages with the "advice," but didn't want to overkill the joke.

The Babs headlines were the easiest to come up with; I deleted a bunch with regret, but now I don't miss 'em.

And now that I've given up on Daffy Daddy, I see lots of ways I could have improved it (by making it look daffier). Oh well.

I hope Lili's given something nice to wear soon. She wasn't exactly the sweatpants type, back in the day.

Venus really needs a new outfit as well. And I concur with Maggarita that Fernanda needs something in royal blue (or peacock), stat.

I think Marti is still in the nurse duds in case someone finds them - a nurse's uniform conveys authority in a way that a pretty yellow sundress does not. Though I still think the tightness of the uniform, and the little hat, look more like a "costume" than a uniform.

Julie, thank you so much for some much-needed laughs today. Can't believe you're not happy with the Daffy Daddy cover, it's my favorite. "Why Am I So Sleepy" and "Seriously, Where Am I?" will have me laughing all day. Also loved Bab's "12 Ways to Avoid Having Sex With the Old Geezer" Absolutely hysterical! I hope you know how talented you are.
The Lili/Fer dance scene had me in tears, also. Loved it.

DDave you got me feeling sorry for you so I went over to YouTube and found this which is pretty good:

Following up on a few questions/comments:

Regarding the Caymans account, I think the story was that the $3 mill in Damian's "secret" account (so secret he doesn't even have access to it, lol) was just a coincidence; the $3 million that's missing from Grupo Lactos is due to the alleged down payment for the cheese machine. That's the theory I came up with just now, anyway.

Stockholm was the preferred destination for Lili only when Babs was running the show and wanted Lili out of easy reach. Fernanda researched the place and agreed that it looked okay, but she hated the idea. FrEd plans for Lili to receive therapy in her new home, I believe.

I'm still not sure where Abora is in terms of stupidity. She told Babs about the writing on the mirror but didn't mention the sounds. She also seems to understand that "someone" (and not "something") is doing this, and that an investigation is in order. Of course she's still scared, but not necessarily of ghosts... just spooked at the thought that someone is messing with her. I don't know how much of Babs's story she bought.

We'll see how smart she is based on whether or not she discusses it with Santi and/or does some sleuthing on her own.

All the grownups living in one house: It's not weird in most cultures for a wealthy extended family to continue to live under one big roof, I don't think. These houses were built to be extended-family homes, rather than house just a nuclear family. The layout offers a fair amount of privacy, and if they're all living in a place that's already paid for then they have more money to buy nice cars and clothes.

Of course, it's also good for plot convenience.

I think Camilo was horsing around at Las Animas rather than at home - on purpose, because he wanted to tell Jacinto that he's through humoring him. (I doubt Babs will approve.)

No follow-up on Marcario yet that I know of. Odd. I guess he's in the same mysterious place as the envelope that Bravo left for Bosco and FrEd.

Julie, you still have that unique touch that I looked forward to when you were a regular. Those magazine covers made for a double treat. It was difficult chosing a favorite. I had intentions of voting for the Guilty Guy's advice about the uninvited guest. That is until I saw the Wicked Stepmother's "Beyond the onion, 7 surefire crying techniques". Absolutely a collection of the most creative sayings that I have seen in a long time. I also liked your comment that Gonzo was "full of gullible gratitude". You have a way with words. I ditto everything that's been said about Aurora's gullibility. Why on earth would someone invite in a stranger who is already trying the doorknob? She isn't using even the most basic survival skills. Cowering in a corner in an upright fetal position is a useless tactic. There's so much unfolding right now that Nanda's dress will have to take a back seat to the things that I comment on. Especially since it's obvious that we're stuck with it until the writers decide otherwise.

dorado dave – ITA ; I finally sensed chemistry between FrEd and Fer last night. Lili would have met Venus at the Big Cups, when Jairo tried to enslave her and Martina helped her escape, right?

And oooooeerrrrr….. FrEd looked really hawt last night. FrEd always reminds me of Rock Hudson in those movies w/Doris Day.

Julie – hang on to those ideas you didn’t use. There’s always next month’s “issue” of the magazine covers . . . (grin)

No doubt all Venus' clothes blew up in the cantina fire, but FrEd could buy her some new ones. After all, he did a good job with Lili's new home. I'm just sayin' .... (unless eSteve likes the current outfit)

Something else about the kiss between Eddie and Nanda, I thought their body language afterward was like children with a first (or maybe second) kiss. Eddie almost seemed to shiver with delight and she gave a little skip as she walked out.

Carlos

OOOOHH, Julie! More magazine covers! Yippy skippy! And thanks for the recap, too. Loved, loved, loved the magazines. Hard to decide which is best. The skull & crossbone bullets were especially nice. I could have been kicked out of the library for snorting on their keyboard and falling out of my chair.

Good choice on Sergio’s photo, the one where he looks just a little like James Dean. That’s his smooth look (as opposed to his rough look with the boots, jeans, and almost-cowboy shirt in Vlad’s apartment).

So, Aurora thinks the solution to something scary is to hunker down and hide her eyes? That’ll really help the situation.

“Camilo is playing with his horsey. Jacinto rides up on his bitchin' bike.” So funny. One would think that Camilo would re-think his approach to Jacinto, now that things have changed. It’s equally annoying/satisfying that he never learns from what happens to him. As long as he can look in a mirror and confirm his citrus-self (orange skin, lemon mouth), he’s ok.

I almost jumped out of my recliner and joined Lili and Fer in dancing around the room. A sweet, sweet scene.
La Paloma

Thanks, Carlos, I'll check out that link.

Someone mentioned Venus' clothes, can anyone make out what her tee shirt says? I can't see it well enough here on the small screen.

Also, Carlos, that skip that you mentioned goes with the little knee dip that Nanda does sometimes in similar moments, she did it just after they kissed, before she skipped. I find it quite endearing, and really adds to the body language facet of Sylvia's acting.

Julie, thanks so much for making my day - the magazine covers were priceless. I do think you have true talent. I enjoyed the Gabby mag cover from FELS but I think these are better.

I can hardly wait to see Barb's reaction to Lili disappearing and Dr. O no longer in control. I hope they don't make us wait too long. I wonder who will break the news?

rsk

I've noticed that knee thing that Fernanda does. I like it much better than the excited hand-flapping she used to do. It's more subtle but still conveys a little sparkle.

It will have to be a sad, sad day for Fernanda to lose the knee-dip.

I tried reading Venus's shirt/dress/whatever and gave up. I was able to pick out a few words last week (which I don't still remember), but not enough to tell if it was supposed to spell out a statement or anything.

Julie, wonderful recap and the covers were too funny. I love 13 things you'd never think to throw!

I loved the Lili/Nanda scene, so nice to see some fun for Lili even though it will probably be short lived.

The kiss was to cute. FC may be to old for this role, he knows what he is doing as an actor and it is great! Its nice to have some light hearted moments.

Connie, I am with you, Arora is retarded! Guess there has to be one in each story!

I just watched the link that Carlos supplied. It was edited much differently than the silent version, but much better with sound. It really was quite a touching scene.

Julie, let's hope that she doesn't lose the knee dip...

I do wish that Ed/Fer would charter a plane and take his little harem to NYC for a makeover, including clothes. I think Esteve is even ready for an updated look. Of course, I think Denia needs to stay at home and keep the Eswat team feed and happy.

rsk

I guess I'm the loner here, but I think Colunga is overacting all of his scenes. He's just not made for this role. His facial expressions in this novela are just over the top like in before and after the smooch. But maybe that's the way he thinks he's supposed to act when you're 40 something trying to play a 20 something. But really, even 20 year olds don't look and act THAT immature ang goofy.

Meester James, Acacia and evil Tio.
Meester Santiago, Arora and evil Madrastra. We've seen it already.

Lili, Venus & Fernanda need to go on a shopping trip but they need some good fashion advice, however, the best one to do that is Babs & that can't happen. Erika had on sth pretty awful at a party, it's in the opening sometimes. A red & black printed horror.

Thanks, Julie, for a terrific recap, and the magazine covers were awesome!

Gonzo never ceases to amaze me. Barbara could tell him ANYTHING, and he'd believe it. When they first accused Damian, Barbara herself "checked" the computer, and said there was no doubt Damian did it. Barbara also put in on the news, right after Gonzo said to keep it quiet, but she somehow got out of that one. Barbara can tell Gonzo that Franco's good, he'll agree. Franco's bad, he'll agree. Damian's a crook, he'll agree. Damian's not a crook, he'll agree.

Here are some things I would like to see (don't know if they'll ever happen, but they would be fun):
1. If Barbara finds out that Aurora really IS her daughter. I think Babs' brain would explode.
2. If Gonzo comes face to face with Artemio Bravo. Don't know if that'll happen, but it would definitely be impactado!

I agree the teenage actions don't fit our guapisimo hero, he is much better when he's an angry 40 sth., riding horses & hanging from ships.

Hombre, I think that both of those will happen; Babs will find that Abora is her barely concious spawn, and Arty and Gonzo will met cara a cara. What happens then is anyone's guess.

Babs got Anibal to take the blame for putting Damian on the news. (Actually I think it was more like she cried, hinted to Anibal that he should take the blame, and then he did it.) That's how she got out of that one!

OK, so maybe Colunga is overacting a little, sometimes. It's usually during scenes in which events take him back to his childhood - like kissing Fernanda, for example, or that time when he got really jealous watching her secret meeting with Damian.

Maybe it's Colunga, or maybe it's the director. Maybe both. I agree that it doesn't completely work, but I still think it's sort of cute.

I'm OK when a guy can act happy and excited about being in love at any age. A real life example, Tom Cruise and couch jumping about Katie on Oprah. He took a lot of ridicule and heat for it, but I was fine with it. And Tom is fortyish now, isn't he? I'm happy that Fr/Ed is happy. Barbara

Tom Cruise is a silly boy

Totally OT. Remember our discussion, some time ago, about chiliquiles, prompted by Margarita's handle? Well, Trader Joe's now sells chiliquiles, in the frozen entrees section. Next to things like Tiki Masala and Enchiladas Verdes. They're not bad!

Of all the women on the show, I think Prisicila dresses the best. I'd wear almost everything they've shown on her so far.

What gets me is that nobody ever changes their clothes, no matter how long a day they've had or how many activities they've engaged in, including kicking an old man down an enbankment.

Paula, did you happen to notice the brand name? There's no Trader Joe's anywhere near me, but if I know the brand I might be able to find it someplace else that's only a little bit out of town. (Then again, I can't even seem to get Bimbo locally, so I won't get my hopes up.)

Julie, I can only add to the chorus that you are amazing. I noted that you weren't happy with Daffy Daddy, but it was fantastic and my favorite.

Loved the Fer/Lili singing and dancing (Lili was better).

There's a desperate need for wardrobe changes - Venus has been in her outfit for days and Fer is still sporting her Brownie outfit (credit to Judy). And as others have pointed out, Lili just needs new clothes period.

Think Fr/Ed is a nerd, plain and simple. It's why seeing his delight in a mere kiss is so confusing to us viewers. Gone is the swashbuckling Ricardo of Pasion. He's a mere mortal here.

I liked his caring touch to Venus' face when he told her she would be going with Martina to Lili's. He's not always conscious that his actions may negatively affect others, but knows how to handle problems once he's aware.

Hombre, I'd like to see Barbie find our about Aurora sooner than later as well. I'm curious if it would mean any change in her character or course of destruction.

I liked my Daffy Daddy jokes - I even liked the fonts I used - I just didn't like the cover layout with the nameplate at the bottom rather than the top. I wanted the picture to fill the whole page, which limited my text placement and the colors that I could use.

Now I'm thinking "Daffy" vertically down the left and "Daddy" vertically down the right in neon letters would have looked much better, not to mention daffier. Maybe I'll redo it for next time I have a recap. I'll need new jokes, but I'm sure those will present themselves as Gonzo's mental deterioration continues.

Sorry, Julie. The chiliquiles are under TJ's label, as are the majority of their products.

I can understand Ed being dazed by the kiss since Fern said she liked it (She likes me! She really, really likes me!). But the method of reaction was totally out of place. Not because of his age and class. But it was out of character. Ed is slow and deliberate and thoughtful. Had Vlad acted that way, it would have been totally in character.

Diana, I think you are right. Fr/Ed is a bit of a nerd (which is OK). Some may be confused because he is not the swashbuckler character of previous roles. I think others may be confused because we are not used to seeing our tv nerds so incredibly handsome. I repeat, I think the kissing scene was sweet (and FC was/is hot). Barbara

The California problem. By the time I post all the great compliments have been used. Except I don't think anyone commented on the title, which was fabulous. I laughed out loud.

Julie, that was an absolutely A+ recap. Your magazine covers are priceless. I don't know how you do it!

I know it's the way they do these things: short scenes switching back and forth between locales, but I was SO enjoying Fernanda and Lili pretending to be Cyndi Lauper, and then they had to switch to Abora and Babs. Loved, loved, loved seeing Lili reverting to her joyous adolescent self!

I really don't think Colunga is overacting in his scenes with Fer. Actually, that whole scene at the condo was joyous. Colunga looked adorable when he smiled sweetly at Silvia and asked her to stay a bit longer. He spends a lot of time in novelas looking angry and purposeful or overcome with passion, sometimes. Nice to see just happiness: happiness at finally giving Lili what she needs; happiness at having created a safe space for Lili, Martina, and Venus; happiness at having done this in company with the woman he loves.

I had the impression that Abora really believes the ghost stories Babs is coming up with. I don't think Babs is trying to pin the "appearances" on Santi, just making sure Abora doesn't tell him so he can put a stop to it. Yuck! I'm sick of that whole part of the TN.

I'm pretty sure we're going to get a flashback to Feo and Padre Tadeo with Padre Bosco and Artemio. Unless the Padre can wiggle out of it, and he's a bit wilier than Tadeo, Artemio is going to tell him something awful and he'll have to keep quiet.

Excellent recap and I loved the magazines! Wonderful work!

Julie! I didn't know you were still on here! I hope everything's good with you. I just wanted to share the love: I'm on Mondays over at Gancho. Peace.

Thanks, everybody. It really was fun. I'm sorry I can't do this regularly any more, but my current situation is difficult. I get Univision on only one TV, and I can't tape it, and my schedule is a little unpredictable anyway.

Howdy, Nickster! Yeah, I'm still around... mostly commenting on MEPS though. It's virtually impossible for me to catch Gancho, but I'm getting a digital converter soon and see if that brings non-cable Univision to my kitchen TV. (Doubtful, but doesn't hurt to try.) Then I can watch while I'm getting my dinner.

Novelera, I'm a late poster as well, but I had to add my appreciation Julie for the wonderful recap and magazine covers. Also, whoever described Cadmillo as "his citrus self" had be rolling on the floor! Thanks, everyone for the hilarious comments that makes watching this TN so much fun.

Julie
I was going to get a converter for my kitchen TV, but while at Best Buy I spotted the cutest little 7" TV, so I got that instead. It's also portable, great for hurricane season.
I had some problems getting some channels since I live in a condo & the bldg blocks signals. I rescanned several times in different places & now get all the channels I want. Even get Azteca which is not on Comcast. It's
an Eviant, hardly takes up any space, about $150.00

Julie,

What an incredible talent you have. The magazine covers are just as funny as the old Mad Magazine covers, in fact even funnier, and just as clever. I liked the "7 best cell phone replacement plans" best of all. Outstanding job!

I know that FC seemed a little awkward in the romantic scenes in Lily's condo, but everything worked for me. It is hard to remember back that far, but didn't we all feel awkwardly disjointed in the early days of a great love. All of the condo scenes worked for me, the silly girlish dancing and the Fer/FrEd kiss. It was really so very sweet.

Aurora, as she left her conversation with Babs, was noncommittal. I hope that that means that she is taking everything Babs said with a grain of salt. She should remember that she has seen Babs with Damian so must have an idea of Bab's character, or has she just forgotten all of that?

Julie, again...WOW!

I rather thought that Eddie had more or less been transported in the moment back to a simpler, more innocent age (11yrs. old) and was picking up where he had left off 15yrs. ago when Babs so rudely interrupted everyone's life. Much as Lil and Nanda were magically whisked back in time by Cyndi Lauper. May I was just willingly caught up in the moment. Time for adult games later. Lil's free!

Carlos

Thanks Julie for one of the best recaps of the entire series. I owe my husband an apology. When we were car shopping, he concentrated on the things that really mattered and limited my capability to merely picking the color. He wiggled out of it by saying he thought that is where a woman wanted to focus her expertise. I angrily denied it. He reminded me of every party and event we went to that afterwards the most significant thing I could remember about the women was the color and style of her outfit. I denied it but it really was true. It is a relief to find that this is important to all women. There's a logo that says "dress to impress". Women really need to pay that more attention since guys are so visual.

Notably absent last night was our Gardenia. I know there are some who might not have noticed but even with all the happiness, I missed her. Maybe Eddie put her in timeout.

Carlos

OT - Variopinta - That's great that your digital TV gets some channels that Comcast doesn't even give you! I call it "stickin' it to the man!"

Our one Tv w/built-in digital tuner (and no cable box, just cable) gets Telemundo and now also gets Telefutura since I re-scanned post-digital changeover a week ago. One doesn't get those channels without the Comcast digital box..... or a built-in digituner. The bad news is when DH hooks up the VCR, I lose all the non-cable digital channels, so no VCR and I can't tape anything on that TV. Wah! I'm not ready to pay Comcast yet another $20+taxes for a second DVR in the house. That comes to $240/yr+tax. THAT is shoe money.

Carlos, I noticed Denia's absence too, thinking how the Denia-haters must have loved it. Will she be happy to have the FrEd and Esteve all to herself now? What will she do with no one to spy on and get in a huff over? Maybe she quit and is going to spill the beans about something not knowing that the "bad girls" are gone.

--Beth

Doris, I also discovered Telefutura on my cable after I rescanned after June 12. I'm a happy camper. If my house burns down, I hope it's not between 10 and 11 PM, Monday thru Friday. Don't nobody mess with my Colombian Betty la fea!

I'm trying to think of the things that Damian has done that would necessitate jail time & can only come up with sabotaging the milk. Granted he has done some really bad things, marrying Fernanda, causing Flor to be fired, but he hasn't murdered anyone yet & I don't think he knows about Artemio or that Babs is a killer.

Maybe the writers thought we needed a break from Gardenia.

Thanks for the recap Julie and the wonderful magazine covers.

Most have commented on the important or funny points I would have made.

Paula, I'm also watching Betty. I watched every episode of LFMB and so far haven't missed an episode of this. Do you like one better than the other? I think I liked Fernando and Mario better, but I like the receptionist, her dad, and Nicholas better in this. One day I'll like Leti better and the next day will prefer Betty. I think I like the operatic feel of Betty better than the ballet feel of LFMB. I know, I don't think that made much sense to Hombre either. I'd just like to hear an opinion about this version.

Carlos

Nickster! Is it really you? How is school going?

Hey Nickster! So glad to see you pop into say hi. I miss you own special brand of snark. Hope school was good.

I never saw Pasion. I loved Alborada, Luis was beautiful, but I am enjoying what FC is bringing to the screen here. Last night was mostly just fun, and that was a nice refreshing change.

Julie, those mag covers rocked! You're a talented gal, with a great imagination. Thanks :-}

Stupid is as stupid does. Aubora is beyond stupid, she has no sense, not even common sense...
jb

Carlos, thanks for asking. I hope you'll join us on the TNW discussion.

LFMB was the first novela I ever saw, and nothing will ever compare. You're only a virgin once. With that being said, I agree, each has its strengths.
* The genius of Gaitan comes through in both. Apart from the last 50 tacked-on caps, the plots and much of the dialog are identical, so both have the phenomenol character development and the non-typical and brilliantly developed plot.
* BLF is tighter. But I value the specific additions in LFMB: a week of Hippy Ed, 31 cap's of bliss before the letter, and 10 cap's of Fernando in NY. I think they add important content to the story.
* BLF is more sparse. You have to draw your own conclusions. LFMB spoon-feeds you a little more.
* I like Betty better than Lety.
* JEA did an awesome job in his portrayal of Armando, but ... Remember near the end of LFMB, Irmita said, "That Aldo, he's a nice boy. But you.. you're Don Fernando! That's how I feel about Camil's Fernando. Magical. Nothing else comes close. (I don't say that because I'm a huge Camil fan. I'm a huge Camil fan because of his Fernando.)
* For me, BLF is extraordinary (one of the greatest TN's of all time), but LFMB is magical. I respect BLF more, but I love LFMB more.

"Operatic feel of Betty [and] the ballet feel of LFMB." Wow! What a great way to put it! You're right. BLF really does feel like opera.

Paula, I went over to TNW after seeing your post on Gancho. It gave me the same feeling I had when I found myself all alone in the Atlanta Airport. I was totally overwhelmed. This is the only blog site I've ever been to and you guys make me feel comfortable. Maybe I'll check back over there another day.

Carlos

For the few of us who were Doña Bárbara fans, I watched a couple of minutes of the new Telemundo offering, Victorinos, at lunchtime (my DVR recorded it last night). Imagine my surprise to see our indio fiel, Melquíades, with a crewcut and playing a smooth talking gigolo, getting his novia to cough up some money for his beers!

Also in the novela, but not yet sighted will be Antonio Sandoval and Maria Nieves.

Variopinta, I agree, I think spoiling that batch of milk (and more expensively, ruining the machine) is the only actual illegal thing he's done so far.

And evading justice when he was a wanted man... I think that's illegal too, even if you're innocent of the charges against you.

But that's still redeemable and doesn't rate a big telenovela death.

However, now that he's talking about taking it out of Barb's hide, he might be going down a road where there's no turning back.

Thanks, Julie. The recap and the mag covers are hilarious. I hate to think we wouldn't get to see your other great lines...maybe you would be able to make a list of them for us for more great chuckles. You are a computer genius as well.

Maybe Gonzo"s wattage is sooo looow from all that sleepy time milk Barb has been bringing to him for 15 years. "Why am I so sleepy?" LOL.

I like the besos and the way they are progressing bit by bit and what's to complain if they are from F C, TMBMOE or whatever it is as I get confused with Jaime Camil's initials. I think they will probably be be getting hotter in the future...as Fer has more contact with Franco and especially since he's freed Lili now. I hope at least.

Abora really is like a hold over from FELS. She is as stoopid as the residents of the Land That Time Forgot. I hope she won't be around for the next 80 epis or so. It will be so irritating and we already have irritating with Gardenia and Errika. GinCA

Thanks for the heads up Novelera. Have you heard anything about Victorinos? It's worth a look if Arap is in it...
jb

P. S. The title is great too! GinCA

jb: They've been promoting the heck out of Victorinos on Telemundo. I know because I've been watching Más Sabe el Diablo. It's based on a Colombian telenovela (what else is new?) which was in turn based on a 1970 book by a Venezuelan, Miguel Otero Silva, entitled Cuando quiero llorar, no lloro.

The plot of "Victorinos" is that there are three young men, coincidentally all named Victorino who are born at exactly the same instant in different places. From the promos it looks like one becomes an assassin, one a police officer, and one a rich kid who has turned to drug dealing.

Mauricio Ochmann, who I last saw in Victoria, is the assassin. Roberto Manrique (Maria Nieves) is the policeman and Arap is the rich guy gone bad.

Carlos and Paula: I'm also watching Betty la Fea, and loving it. I joined LFMB in the middle, and didn't understand Spanish that much at the time, so I never did understand a lot of the nuances. I think that's why I like Betty la Fea more. To me, LFMB was just a bit too cartoonish. I especially like Patricia, as opposed to Alicia, and I love Aula Maria, the receptionist. And I really feel for Betty, whereas I thought Lety was just a little too over the top. But yes, I agree Don Fernando tops Don Armando.

(Sorry MEPS fans to be off topic).

Hah Carlos! I'm feeling better now. I too went to that blog site and was just totally overwhelmed. Turned tail and left. Not ready to deal with anything complicated in this 90 degree heat.

Stranger in a strange land is how I felt. And I've been there before...but I was younger then!

Thanks, GinCA. The lines I rejected were mostly lame stuff like "Review: Discount Eyeliner Warehouse." Well, okay, that was one of the better ones. It was just more jokes about how confused Gonzo is, how frightened the staff are, how much fun blackmail is... oh and for Damian there was "101 Inedible Sandwiches for Bachelors."

OMG! I just realized you made those magazines covers! Those are pure strokes of genius--you da bomb!

Wow, I've been scarce on the blog lately, so probably missed a lot but I scrolled and saw those graphics and knew it could only be one person. Julie!! Nice to see you back around these parts! Fantastic job!!!!

I agree with Anonymous 12:43 that Colunga is uncomfortable-looking trying to act like a 20-something. He does suave much better. I agree with all who said that scene of Lili recapturing some of her old spirit was phenomenal - I was glad they just let it run, it was so poignant. I agree with all who say Julie's magazines are da bomb. I especially love Daffy Daddy, he is such a dim bulb. His brain has been obliterated by the last super-nova of lust in his aging loins.

Julie, you're great.

Late to the party, but I had to express my appreciation for the recap and the magazine covers. Those jokes were so right on!
