Sortilegio #15, 10/26/09: Victoria drops a bombshell and we all have to suffer for it.
Hope you enjoyed the "previously's" because that's all the fun you're getting tonight. Alex and MJ smiled happily in bed ...
... but then he had to go and ask again about Bruno. When she said "I fell in love" Alex sneered, "you said that about me last night, you 'fall in love' pretty easy dontcha?" which is not a good way to make headway with a girl as tetchy as MJ.
"No, of course I won't love Bruno again, I'm furious at him for deceiving me, your family will never accept me, yes I was a virgin, your sister was a snake to say she saw us kissing..." blah, blah...
I can see, though, why Alex would be hurt that when there was trouble with the Pirate Papa she went off with Bruno instead of telling all to her hubby.
Philipa and Pedro are destined to be an item because they were both poor (there's something sure to bind a couple) and from the same town. Victoria is snobby and - because she's intent on absolving Bruno of all guilt - she's going with the "MJ and Paula are evil witches who tell lies and have an accomplice" story.
Paula is impressed that Alex spent 50,000 pesos to get dad out of trouble. Same conversation as usual, to whit: I'm not really his wife, yes you are, they aren't our people, etc.
Alex shuffles down the stairs and there's Bruno on the couch! Since Alex paid so much to him to get him to leave, there is natural indignation...
... which ends in fisticuffs, and mama Victoria comes rushing in to separate them and eventually says: "If you make Bruno leave, I'm leaving too!" She follows him into another room and, making no progress in softening his heart...
... escalates by dropping the bombshell: "Raquel and Bruno are your father's children."
Alex is impactado and spends the rest of the episode moping, drinking, sobbing, etc.
In the kitchen Ezequiel is "telling all" to Philipa - about all the times he's seen MJ with Bruno, and Bruno's continually hopping in through her bedroom window etc., but Philipa tells him to shut his pie hole because they don't need more scandal.
In the midst of all the identical conversations about her fornication "errors" and why she's kept this secret so long, Victoria reveals one entertaining thing: "Bruno didn't want me to marry any other man, he wanted there to be only him in my life." Heh.
I'm looking over my notes and skipping, skipping ... ah yes, moping Alex goes into his study and looks at a photo of his parents as a bunch of celestial sopranos bust out in a "GLORIA!!"
Here on earth, Victoria and Alex cry on a split screen! Commercial.
Paula meets up with Alex on his way out and natters on about Raquel firing Eric and... but Alex drives away, not listening...
... so then she has to tell it all to MJ and that was kind of funny. "Well, yeah, a cat fight, but Raquel hit me first! And she called me names!" MJ goes on again about, I'm not his wife, we'll take care of dad ourselves. "Well, but if you sell the apartment to pay his bills, we'll be out on the street." MJ has no answer for that.
Philipa, who has patiently endured years of Victoria's moping and snuffling and whining about the kids, admits she thinks Alex is a better guy than Bruno or Raquel. Heh.
Eric and Bruno, each in a dashing (?) unbuttoned shirt, go to see some scumbag and pay him to make a recording on Bruno's cellphone implicating Papa Pedro the Pirate in various dastardly smuggling deeds including guns.
Alex and his bud Ferdinand go to a bar where Alex gets sloshed and Ferdinand earnestly stands up for Victoria and the irresistible power of love. Blah, blah, blah. He eventually resorts to saying that what Alex is doing with MJ right now is no better than what Victoria did and asks, did you use a condom? No answer [uh oh, then MJ's pregnant for sure -- Ed.].
MJ is leaving her dad's chalet after a cozy chat with nurse Rosie... when who should pop up but Bruno, cell phone false witness in hand, asking whether she's been sleeping with Alex, and when are they getting divorced. He avers that her staying with Alex is "not in my plans." Then he demands, "Tell him you're having my baby!" and plays the tape for her.
Thank goodness, instead of collapsing and sobbing she grabs the phone and runs! Hurrah!
Bruno sets off after her but is slowed down by his brother-in-law who is skulking (luckily for MJ) in the bushes having a smoke. MJ gets to the house safely and wants to share this latest calumny with Alex but he, for once, isn't having any and mopes off to bed. And cries over his shoelaces because he doesn't want to share blood with Bruno.
After a few more repetitive conversations, Victoria (in very amusing pajamas) knocks on Alex's door and he reluctantly lets her in. She's brought that out-of-print book Ferdinand found for her in some bookstore - she wrote it, it's about her torrid love affair with Alex's dad. She says her husband was a writer, but an unsuccessful one, and she wrote as a hobby, but when it seemed she might have some success she published under a pseudonym so as not to embarrass her husband. Alex reads and weeps some more. Gee, her prose sounds just like a telenovela...
Elsewhere: Eric suggests to Bruno: "You could walk away from the whole mess, from the money and the woman," but Bruno says no, he chose MJ for himself...
Alex goes to wake MJ and asks: "We've had sex twice and I didn't use a condom. Are you glad or not? And are you [shouldn't that be 'were you'?] a virgin?"
She says, "too bad you're such a jerk," and this sorry episode comes to a close.
Tomorrow: Alex and Bruno tumble together down the Stairway of Death but I bet they both survive (not a spoiler).
Labels: sortilegio
Ibarramedia - your predictions of death and destruction based on the family bad blood were great. It will be interesting to see if some or all of it pans out that way.
I just have one question for anyone. How could Alex not know if MJ was a virgin. We saw the scene where she was washing the bed sheets. Did any of the characters mention why Alex would be confused!
(Melinama)
Yes, that must be it. He just needed her to confirm his victory over Bruno.
So part of the MJ/Alex conversation at the end was him asking her when her next period is. (I have never seen a galan ask this!) She said in a few days, and he says he wants her to tell him when she gets it. When he asked her if she was a virgin when they had sex, she looked at him like he was a complete idiot, considering she has told him she was a virgin and I think she felt it was obvious by the way she reacted that it was her first time. She basically asked if he couldn't tell, and when he said no, that's when she "well, too bad you're such an idiot." Good one MJ! :)
Glad to see the galan weeping in this episode, instead of the heroine.

So funny, Melinama. Thank you. Loved this recap and as rsk said, it was better than the episode. Which means the recap is really, really good because I thought this was a good episode, even if it was a bit of a downer on all fronts.
It was good because the secret I thought Vicky would keep until the end, came out. Once again this TN keeps pace with its plot lines and doesn't let it all stack up. It was also good because MJ tells Alex of Bruno's threat instead of caving in to the threat.
Lots of ugly crying and amusing pajamas though.

Any chance MJ will be smart enough to drop that phone in the toilet?
Felipa is cut from the same cloth as Rufina in El Nombre de Amor. The loyal servant who's way smarter than the people she waits on.
I thought the drunken conversation between Alejandro and Fernando was rather good, actually. Fernando was telling him the truth, that sometimes people can't help but fall for the wrong person, that his madrastra is fallible, but she loved him like her own son nearly his whole life.
There were two surprises for me. I didn't remember (if I ever knew) that Antonio was married to Alejandro's mother while he was having the affair with Victoria. For some reason I had it in my head that Antonio was single then and only married after Samuel took Vicky to Europe.
The other surprise (if it was the truth) was when Ale told Fer that he took MJ to bed for vengeance and spite. If true, that puts a whole different light on his character. I believed he was falling for her.
Cubsfan
It's fine that Alex was touched by the beautiful story of Vicki's romance with his father, but did he actually wipe his runny nose on the book? (I hope I'm wrong about that one--I'm a retired librarian and we don't like people putting bodily fluids on books.)
You know MJ's just gotta be pregnant now. It's TN Law. Cool previews--brotherly fight with stair-rolling. Almost as good as the ice rink cat fight.
La Paloma
Alex better not doubt the baby is his.
I can't beleive all this sweet loving was for vengeance. I like a flawed hero. But I did not see this coming.
When she said "I fell in love" Alex sneered, "you said that about me last night, you 'fall in love' pretty easy dontcha?" Alejandro Muy Delicioso Lombardo! For shame! Well, okay... like Melinama said, I too can see where with all his past and present issues and uncertainties about Bruno and MJ, AND his attempted murder, he would be coming a bit unhinged at this point. He doesn't even have any proof that MJ is innocent at all--just her word.
You and me, Vicky. Let's take this outside! Maybe after we go a few rounds, some of that "snob" will roll of your shoulder... Gah, what? Oh no you didn't spill the beans about having an affair with Alex's dad while his poor mom was struggling with fertility issues, so soon into the story?? Wow. As if Alex needs one more burden on his plate while his siblings have none, just easy lives. Meh.
The more I think on it, the more I feel that blood secret should have gone to the grave. There still would have been issues if Bruno, Raquel, and Alex had been told as children, but nothing near the hell that will ensue now. When the Wonder Twins find out, rather than being drawn closer to Alex, surely they will use that to start a worse fight over the family fortune (lawyers, get ready). Their humiliation over their illegitimacy will know no bounds, especially if the town gets wind of it, and "vengeance will be theirs." As it is, Alex is a loose cannon right now, something he has never been. His relationship with Vicky may be irreparably damaged--he called her Victoria a few times last night instead of Madre. Not good.
I don't know why fistfights between Bruno and Alex make me so happy. "What you got on the street wasn't enough, eh? Hold still then, Bruno, while I slam you to the ground--" *CRASH*
Dear Felipa. Always having to be the voice of reason in a household of dingleberries.
Victoria reveals one entertaining thing: "Bruno didn't want me to marry any other man, he wanted there to be only him in my life." This is really getting creepy. Doesn't Raquel have the same sort of feelings about stepbrother/real brother Alex? Ick.
... ah yes, moping Alex goes into his study and looks at a photo of his parents as a bunch of celestial sopranos bust out in a "GLORIA!!" Here on earth, Victoria and Alex cry on a split screen! Commercial. LMAO!
Bruno, really. You are a high caliber villain. You can do way better than blackmailing by a cell phone recording. Boy, what are you doing? You deserved to be thwarted by MJ--ha!
He [Fernando] eventually resorts to saying that what Alex is doing with MJ right now is no better than what Victoria did... How do you figure that, Nando? Huh? Married, having an affair, gets a Baby Daddy and a Non-Baby Daddy at the same time, next to sleeping with a woman who claimed to be your wife after someone tried to kill you. ??? Nando, even with the condom thrown into the argument, you are a marooooon.
Pobrecito de Alex! He is so losing his grip over the worsening horror that is his family, that he doesn't even trust his own eyes or his own judgment anymore. I fear MJ will bear some of the brunt of that fallout. It had to be shock to her when, on the stairs, he acted like she wasn't even there.
(Levy has made sad and tragic expressions an art form. He is so good at looking hurt, and that man-cry... I just want to make it all better.)
The Stairway of Death! And more tight undies! Don't fall the wrong way, Bruno.
Either our boy was talking trash and posturing because he was drunk and so damned distraught, or... maybe he's caught in a time warp, using present tense for past, like in the last scene when he said "ARE you still a virgin?" when he should have said "WERE you still a virgin (when I hit it)?"
This is all just my $1.50, of course.
I thought Alex's sex for vengence comments were probably based on his initial motivation, but were propelled into being verbalized by the alcohol. Haven't we all experienced the stupid talk that comes out of our mouths after we've downed a few. I'm just worried that Fernando is going to take Alex's words and make them haunt him and MJ.
Way-to-go MJ!!! grabbing that cell phone and then running for your life in those skinny jeans.
Bruno's face was so funny as he hid behind his mommy's skirt as she defended him and made her ultimatum about leaving. If he had stuck out his toung and said "nah nah ne nah nah!" I would not have been surprised. :)

Alex and Bruno fighting and rolling around on the floor! Laughing my a$$ off! Reminds me of my brothers when they were young.
Paula almost came out of her shirt. I know you guys were really disappointed. I dont' know Paula actually says words. All I hear when she talks is screech, screech, SCREECH! Ack!
Stephe, my son is safe and sound. I heard from him yesterday and I got to see him on his webcam. My mom's sorority just sent him two big boxes of stuff and he was so excited. I guess they don't get alot of meat there so he wanted canned tuna, chicken, ham or whatever. It's funny how we take that stuff for granted.
Yes, I was thinking about the blog men during Paula's near-wardrobe malfunction. Heheh.
Vivi: That was indeed funny, Bruno making "ha ha" faces behind Mommy. LOL
We'll take care of papá ourselves, hmmm, & who just paid 50 mil pesos?
One would think that Alex would buy condoms by the case.
Maybe it's just me, but why is Alex sooooo upset. Most guys would say, hey madrastra, you go girl, you had it on with my papá?
At least Fernando might think Vicky is a little easier.
At the time of Vicky's affair that produced the twins from hell, she was married to Samuel & Antonio was married to Adriana.
Love the way Roberto always shows up at the right moment. I think he has a pretty good idea about what's going on. What else does he have to do?
Alex’s love “vengence and spite.” This place will be rocking today with this discussion! If we remember, Alex always gave MJ a passionate kiss just as Bruno entered the room. Jardineria made a reference to them “marking territory” in one of her recaps. I’m not going to let all of this concern me. It isn’t where they started, it it where they finish...together and respectfully in love, not a spoiler a educated guess! Besides that, the growth of their real relationship gives us more fun to watch. I feel sorry for MJ, she doesn’t deserve all this anguish, she’s a good girl. I don’t look forward to having the baby’s paternity in question, (yes, she’s PG, I’m sure, it's novela land) but you know THAT is coming, oh brother!
The sound is terrible in Sortilegio. Last night, in the restaurant, the “background” noise was louder that the conversation between Alex and Nando.
Vario: "condos by the case" funny! His shirt and slacks are so tight, where can he hide his supply???????
Connie, glad you son is safe!

If it were me and my parents, I would be in a fetal position right about now.
Man, Raquel and Bruno are going to take this even WORSE.
Too funny...just spilled coffee on my keyboard.
Also, after initial confusion about Alex's revenge sex, now agree with the others that he was drunk and probably talking out of spite. I do think he's already fallen for MJ inspite of himself.
Thanks again Melinama for the great recap!.
Cubsfan.
Alex should write a book, "How To Be A Jerk After The First Time In Five Easy Steps"
1. Ask if she WAS a virgin (the most priceless)
2. Ask when her period should start. Tell her to let you know.
3.Ask her if she loves your brother.
4. Ask her if she has had sex with your brother
5. Answer all her questions with "it's normal", or in other words, "been there, done that!!
This would be straight to Oprah's Book Club on a bullet.

being the red-blooded male that he is, why not? I'm sure there has been some rivalry over girls in the past with Alex & Bruno & Alex is not like Santiago MEPS.
I guess there are many ways to look at the Vicky affair. After the initial shock, he had parents that loved him & a stepmother that treats him like a son & truly loved his father.
IS there anyone on this show that really is worth dating, anyway? What do you think, ladies and gents?
I'm beginning to really DISLIKE Vicky just like I disliked (don't want to use the word hate!) Gonzo in MEPS. She is an enabling mother. Also, she should have taken her big secret to her grave. Alex holding that picture of his MOM and DAD was said it all.
Sandy in TN
-Vivi in DC
A guy worth dating....hum..are you looking for a long term relationship or a "weekend in Cancun"?
Sandy in TN
Vivi: LOL! Sometimes a little shame gets you a lot of game. :D
Stephe: You ask if there's anyone worth dating? Well, if we're just talking dating, I'll go with Paula, Maura, Lisette and Raquel (somehow I'm not too wild about MJ - Alex can have her).
As for whether men can tell if it's the lady's first time, I think the answer is, sometimes yes, sometimes no (I'll leave it to the medical profession to give the details).
Stephe...no on Ulises until we figure out his orientation, just thinking out loud here!
Sandy in TN
Ladies, I don't think Uli does a thing for anybody. I was just trying to help the brotha out. LOL!
OK, person to date..keeping in mind that I am a married GRANDMOTHER, this is quite a mental streach for me... ta da Fernado Colunga! I know, I'm cheating by naming him, BUT...I think that he SEEMS to have more long term character than the offerings in Sorti. I don't want to live in MJ's regretful world for even a minute, and I would do that.
Sandy in TN
I do want to make a comment. I think what Alejandro said to MJ is "eras virgen" not "eres virgen. "eras" means "were you". I taped the novela and went bakc and listened to it over and over again. I think you all agreed that sometimes the sound does not come out clearly.
I enjoy the recaps every day.
La Paloma, as a former librarian myself, I agree Alex' treatment of that book was somewhat questionable. But, I'm glad he's reading it ;-).
Vario, me too. Still pining for FC, the king, or maybe Jorge Salinas and a distant third would be WL. Absolutely no way Ulises, even if he's straight. And Nando doesn't have enough emotion to be a believable lover. Hope I change my mind on that.
Really have to get my mind and my hands back to work here, but loved the daydreaming. You all are so much fun.
Of course Alex is disappointed and angry. His father who taught him ethics in business did a unethical thing - to a business partner, his mother was betrayed by husband and friend. NO this is not the same thing as him and MJ. And I thought he pointed that out to Fernando.
Fernando is just like Victoria! Denying her wrong doing so he can continue to idolize her. Just as Victoria denyies her son does bad things so she can continue to hope he will reform. I think I'll plan -in my own desired script- that they die in each others arms.
The only datables in this TN are Felipa (not Pedro, a loveable loser) and MJ. Fernando appears to be a dolt with only one thing on his mind and Alex is disappointing me today. I was very worried about his manipulative behavior a week ago and he has (temporarily)gone to the dark side. OK, maybe I would give him a dating chance to lavish me with jewels and clothing, pay my fathers debts and let me live in the Technicolor Dream House.
maybe walk on both sides of the street and proud to be unemployed. Ulisses maybe the same as Roberto. Pass thank you. Bruno self-centered ape. Upbringing and financial situation anyone in his position would love to have and he stills feels life has not been fair for him.Pimp Daddy Erick sorry the Saturday Night fever fasion has passed. Sleazy and is willing to commit murder for his homicidal boss. Not someone you want to meet the parents. So other than Alex nope not a one does it for me. Great question though.
Just wanted to comment on the technicolor house....did anyone notice the crazy pink fridge? OMG!
Sorry for the FC PSA, but that's the way I feel.
I'd date Alex any day! I know he's a bit of a jerk right now, but I really believe that he's pretty good overall (even if he's not, with that face who cares?!) Seriously speaking, I think he has his reasons for being suspicious. He just has a bad habit of ruining a good moment with his suspicions. Nonetheless, I can forgive him for that... ;-)
He tries to rein in Raquel, has been kinder than others in the household to Paula and MJ.
But I'd want him to lose the soul patch!
Welcome all new posters! Anon 5:04, I agree with you and I feel for MJ right now. LevyFan...I can't believe I missed the HOT pink fridge, thanks.

Now that could be the beginning of a bad day or not depending on the outcome. Let's give the poor guy a break. He's only gorgeous, rich, sweet, generous & risks his life for MJ's padre plus the 50 mil pesos to bail him out of trouble.
Now I ask you, who knows a man like that?
Don't know if the guys agree, but I think the best looking female in the show is Maura.
