Sortilegio, 12/04/09: No More Mother Goose

Capítulo 47?

We return with a quick rehash of the night past to Merida, the land of rumba and rumbles and of the risqué rich, just as the scurrilous scandals of the lurid Lombardo lifestyle are about to leap from lip to gossiping lip. As Viewerville straps itself in for another ride on the dark side, the Mexi-trash Twins are discussing Bruno’s bed-ability and Maura is advising licentious Lisset that fooling around with a sociopath like Bruno is a dangerously stupid thing to do; Paula is telling Mary Jo about the run-in at the Jacuzzi with Raquel and Roberto and gets a scolding from her big sis for daring to put herself in a compromising social situation by goofing around with a married man; and Bruno is meeting with the newspaper reporter, Saldivar, to give him the salacious scoop on Victoria’s extramarital affair with Antonio Lombardo, explaining how it led to her having his two illegitimate children, one of which is (duhn-duhn-duhn-duhnnn!) he himself.

Bruno gives the reporter the details about the affair taking place while Vicki was still married to Samuel Albeniz and adds that he and his sister are currently getting DNA tests done to prove their right to be recognized as a Lombardo. The reporter notes that this will destroy his mother’s reputation and is curious that this doesn’t seem to bother El Bruto; but Bruto slides right by that with practiced arrogant ease. He ignores him and says he can go with what he has in the gossip column [nota, nota sociedad] and then once the DNA results come out in a few days he should give the story four columns’ worth (twice the normal size for a story). He emphasizes that he is to keep his name completely out of it. The reporter takes offense at this questioning of his professional ethics, then says he’ll have to get his boss’s permission to run with the story because of the Lombardo’s power and influence. Bruno leaves the reporter a thousand pesos for “coffee” as incentive and takes off.

At the lab, while waiting on Raquel to finish her Do Not Ask test, Vicki mentions to Bobo that Raqui told her about wanting to get a divorce. Bobo says he’s objects to the divorce, but it’s not because he’s still in love with her. With his best poker face, he tells her that it’s simply that he doesn’t feel he has a reason to divorce her. (Whoring is obviously not gender-specific.) Vicki asks if Raquel has reasons, but there’s no time for Bobo to answer her because Drama Queen has just rushed back in to complain that she’s had to avoid the (huff-huff-n-puff) supposedly questioning stares of the staff. Of course, she then turns around and immediately makes a big to-do with the nurse not to go spreading tales to the press. This irritates Bobo. “--Why’d you do that? You just gave her the idea!” They quarrel about it on the way out. Vicki rolls her eyes and Bobo shakes his head. He knows by now that he might as well spit into the wind. (Viewerville’s women immediately turn to their significant others to plead for assurances to mercifully kill them in their sleep before letting them turn into anything even closely resembling Raquel.)

At Lombardo, Inc., Alex informs Fernando that Gabriel didn’t show up for his therapy that morning at the hospital. It seems he and Meche grabbed their things and disappeared off the map. Alex thinks they were warned, but Nando is inclined to think they were threatened and ran away. It could have been Bruno, Erick, or even Chucho since Chucho told them they might end up in jail if she came to work there once Alex found out. Fernando then mentions he finally got the ever-elusive judge who performed the sham marriage to answer his e-mails. The guy is about to go on another safari but Nando doesn’t know where. Alex hopes that Bruno doesn’t find out where he’s going before they do. The two discuss the lawsuit and reckon that the judge dealing with their case will be discreet about the results of the DNA tests.

Fernando then mentions he’s coming over to the house later to discuss plans with Victoria for the archeological complex they want to develop. He’s excited just being near her. (I take time out to breathe deeply into my paper bag.) Alex gives him an atta-boy for his persistence. (Sorry, but I say this puppy is sick.) Alex changes the subject then, and tells Puppy Boy that he threw Bruno out and that Bruno rather rudely reminded him about divorcing MJ as part of the deal they struck. Fernando tells him that he has no reason to comply with such absurd demands from crazy Bruno. Alex reminds him that he was desperate and would have sold his soul to the Devil himself. Nando tells him he can’t do it because he’ll just be playing into Bruno’s hand if he does. Alex seems to have a plan, though, and he says that two can play at that game. (Viewerville lets loose with a sigh of relief and thinks it’s about time and then some for Alex to ditch the Marquess of Queensbury for Machiavelli.) “--If he can play dirty, then I’m going to play the same game.”

Back at the Lombardo manse, Pau, MJ and Papi Pedro are merrily chatting away till MJ reminds Paula that it’s time to go home (wherever and whatever that is now). Pau entertains them with another temper tantrum because she knows that this time there’s no way she can avoid having to exchange the luxurious Lombardo lifestyle for Papi Pedro’s pocilga. [cuchitril = hovel/ pocilga = pigsty, both words being totally interchangeable in Paula’s dictionary.] MJ tells her she doesn’t need her arguing with Raquel every time they run into each other. (MJ needs her space and Paula—for all her good points—is a regular pain in the ass when it comes right down to it.) Pau screams that her sister is just being selfish and stomps out of the room. (Hubby interrupts this tender scene with a snicker to remark that Pau would probably machine-gun a bus full of crippled children to stay there.) Pedro says it would be fine if she could stay at the Lombardo’s, but Mary Jo says she doesn’t want him left alone, even though he reminds her that Chucho lives with him now and he is not alone. She keeps the possibility open for later, depending on what happens once Pau moves back in with him. (Ok. So just what does she expect to change her attitude? As the ditty goes, “How ya gonna get ‘em back on the farm once they’ve seen Paree?”)

At the same time, Bruno calls the house to have Zeke pack up his things and have Erick bring them to him at the hotel he’s moved to.

Outside, Erick, gripes to Arturo about Alex firing him and throwing out Bruno. Artie tells him if they were thrown out there had to be a reason, but Erick insists Alex did it just for the hell of it. Buttlick goes inside to help with Bruno’s things.

The Rolls drives up and Raqui, Bobo and Vicki get out. Drama Queen, still fuming, storms off to the chalet. Vicki complains about her daughter’s nasty personality. Bobo agrees and says the problem is that she doesn’t think of anyone but herself. Vicki tells him they need to talk further about his situation.

The first thing Raquel does is call up Uli to bitch about her embarrassing predicament with the results of the DNA test and Bruno’s going public. She’s also having a hissy fit over the fact that Roberto knows about the two of them. Uli asks if he actually said something to her. She shouts at him hysterically that he didn’t mention Uli by name, only that he knows she has a lover. They’ve got to see each other ASAP!

It’s much quieter on the terrace where Bobo and Vicki are discussing his and Raquel’s possible divorce. Vicki is opposed unless they simply don’t get along with each other. (That’s a tactful way of putting it.) He’s agreed, he says, obviously tiptoeing through the pesos here. He skillfully avoids any mention of the truly hellacious relationship they have. Vicki asks why they’ve never had any children. Bobo blames it all on Raquel, saying that in the beginning she never wanted any and then things cooled off, the relationship got rough and stale. In the end, it just wasn’t right. Vicki asks if they could wait with the divorce until things blow over. He can stay in the chalet and she can move back into the main house. Vicki also wants to know if he might have some “female friend” of sorts. He answers in the negative. Just then Paula, MJ and Pedro come outside.

Vicki and Bobo walk up and she gives a warm greeting to Pedro. He laps it up. (If I were Pete I’d be pinching myself and wondering why the Ice Queen’s suddenly melted.) MJ mentions he’s moved to Merida. Pedro and MJ explain the new pottery business that he and Chucho are starting. (Yawn.) Vicki offers to help anyway she can. (That’s reason enough for another pinch.) Bobo offers to take Pedro and Pau back home. After they leave, Vicki offers Mary Jo to let them come back and live there in the bungalow again if they like. Mary Jo says she refuses to take advantage of the family that way. Vicki accepts her conscientious answer. The conversation turns to Mary Jo’s mother and MJ tells her she died when she was about three.

Meanwhile, Fernando leaves the office for home but first he asks Mari where his sister is. Sainte Mari says she had a phone call and disappeared and has no idea where she went.

Nando’s kid sis, who I not so fondly think of as Crotchya, is paying a visit to Bruno at his new digs. From the looks of it, Bruno is looking forward to a little afternoon delight with his favorite juvenile delinquent. They share a little statutory romance and he warns her to be discreet about their relationship. She lies about her chats with Lis and denies ever having done something so ridiculous. In between kisses he persuades her to get him the file of Alex’s uncle, Roman Villavicencio, out of the company archives so that he can use it to win his lawsuit against Alex. “--Lawsuit? What lawsuit?” (Golly geez! Older men are so intriguing……)

Speaking of Alex, he’s on the phone with his attorney. Lic. Quiñones tells him, yes, he can give his money to whomever he wants: a charity, the Church, or any beggar off the street. Alex mentions he remembered Quiñones saying that Bruno might have a card up his sleeve. LQ says yes he did, and then mentions that the judge chose a lab that he trusts, so he doubts the news of their DNA tests will get out.

Pau and Pedro enter the apartment building. Pete’s making excuses for the “simple” accommodations. Pau takes one look around and crinkles up her nose. (It’s rough, but not exactly the roach motel that Meche or Julia live in.) She finds her room and slams the door in Pedro’s face. Chucho winces. She takes one look around her new bedroom and begins to bawl. (That Tequila Sunrise paint job would do it for me. Ugh! Just looking at it is enough to give me a hang-over. On the other hand, what’s to complain about, Pau? He gave you the t.v.) The two men commiserate over Pedro’s parental predicament.

Mary Jo continues discussing her family with Vicki. She tells her that her dad’s not a bad guy. He has just had an unfortunate life. He became both father and mother to the girls very early in his life. Vicki wonders why they visited her mother’s grave so rarely. Supposedly they left his hometown and transferred her mother’s remains when they moved to Saqui. MJ says she thinks he never visited the grave much afterward because the whole experience was too painful for him. Vicki still thinks it’s odd to have moved the remains to Saqui and then avoided visiting the grave. MJ says she hadn’t really thought about it before.

Alex comes back from work. He kisses Mary Jo passionately. (Come to think of it, that Italian hairdresser does know a few tricks. Kudos.) Vicki smiles and excuses herself. He tells Mary Jo that whatever happens, he loves her more than life itself. She doesn’t like the sound of that and says when he says things in that tone she gets frightened, since it usually means something pretty ugly is going to happen. (Probable divorce alert!) Alex says he just wants her to know that he would never leave her. They kiss and hug again.

Meanwhile, Buttlick is outside in the patio area of Bruno’s new no-tell hotel waiting to deliver Bruno’s personal things to him. He hides behind a pillar when he sees Crotchya leaving. The clerk comes outside and tells him which suite Bruno’s in.

Saldivar is now trying to persuade his boss to let him go with the Lombardo story. The boss tells him it’s dangerous. If it isn’t true it will open the paper to a major lawsuit and could lead to them shutting the entire paper down. Saldivar says his source is 100% reliable and the story is true. He suggests that they print it initially as gossip; then when the DNA results come out they can give it four columns. He’s sure the paper will sell like hotcakes and that the story might even go national. His editor demands to know his source or he won’t go with the story. Saldivar eventually gives in and tells him it’s Bruno Albeniz. The editor nearly has a heart attack when he hears it’s Sra. Lombardo’s own son.

Bruno tells Buttlick to go to the company and demand his severance pay. Buttlick says fine, but complains he’s still out of work. Bruno tells him he’ll still be working for him and getting the same salary as before. Bruno tells him to visit his cousin and find out what they’re saying around the barrio about Meche and Gabe. Afterwards he’s supposed to go back to his house and wait for him to call if he needs him for something else. For now he can consider himself on vacation. Buttlick heads out and Bruno calls the front desk with a request for daily deliveries to his room of every national and local paper they can get him.

Back at Lombardo, Inc. Mari is trying to tell Katia that she can’t just up and leave during working hours. The smart-mouth little brat tells her to lay off because she’s nothing more than the secretary there. Alex is the only boss so, “Ubicate!” [Figure it out and get real already!] She could care less about Mari’s bitching. Again Sainte Mari says nothing. Katia tells her she’s going to bathroom to avoid getting coughed on. Erick walks into the reception area as the blond bimbette-in-training walks out sucking on her lollipop. He explains he’s there for his severance check. After Mari gives him directions to Payroll, he asks her who the girl was that just left. He says he thought he’d seen her around the Lombardo’s. Mari tells him she’s Fernando’s sister. He makes a mental note of one more reason to consider his boss something akin to a loose turd.

As it turns out, Crotchya is really down in the archives asking for help from one of the employees to show her where the dead files are.

A bit later, Felipa and Vicki are on the back patio discussing Mary Jo’s mother and the fact that Pedro rarely visited his dead wife’s grave. Felipa suggests that he killed her and then wanted to stay away from her and the site of the supposed crime. Vicki laughs that she’s been watching too much television. Felipa admits she was just kidding around [pura vacilada]. She thinks it’s more likely his wife might have cheated on him or was mean and he only brought the remains back to give the girls a place to pray for her. “If she did cheat on him there was no reason for the girls to have known.” Just then Vicki notices Raquel is changed and walking towards the carport. They wonder where she’s going now. Felipa suggests it’s to see Meowra. Vicki shakes her head in utter frustration.

Raqui starts yelling for Arturo and finds him catnapping on the floor in the back of his cab. She wants the keys to the Beemer and he worries about why he can’t drive her instead. She asks him why it matters. He tells her that they just fired Erick and he’s worried that he’s next. She is surprised that Erick got fired. Artie tells her that Sr. Alex fired him and threw out Sr. Bruno at the same time. She screams at him for the keys and peels out of the driveway. Vicki notices that she’s driving herself. Felipa says, well yeah. Vicki asks why she answered like that. Felipa catches herself and says she was just agreeing with her.

Upstairs MJ and Alex are sharing a little down-time playing board games. She stops and says she’s worried because it’s not the first time he’s made little asides that make her think that something bad is going to happen to them. He fudges a little and says he’s just worried about the problem with Bruno and the trial. She asks if it’s got to do with money and he says yes. She tells him she doesn’t care if he’s a poor man or not. He says he’s still got to defend what’s right and just or his life will turn into a fiasco. He tells her to forget about all that and they begin the smooch-fest all over again.

Across town, Raqui shows up outside Uli’s place and notices Bobo’s car parked out front. She curses and calls Uli’s cell to find out what’s up. Uli’s inside asking Bobo why he’d ask such a question when his cell rings. He tells Bobo it’s his wife calling him. He answers and Raquel tells him they had a date and to get rid of her husband. Uli refuses. He says he brought a friend over and they’re having a pleasant conversation, so it’ll have to wait till later. (I think that’s the gist of it. The CC went out here.) She hisses at him to get rid of both of them. He hangs up on her. She is ready-to-explode impactada. She mumbles to herself about WTF is going on with Uli and then walks away in a huff to wherever she parked her broomstick.

Inside, Roberto demands an answer. “Did you use a condom with Raquel or not?” Uli says he doesn’t remember. Sometimes he did but at other times he didn’t. “What is the problem?” Bobo, he says, certainly didn’t use a condom when he forced himself on her the last time, did he? If she did get pregnant, he sneers, he and Roberto can share paternity. Bobo does not appreciate the tasteless attempt at humor; he calls Uli a shameless S.O.B. Uli doesn’t understand the concern here since they’re both bi-sexuals. Bobo gets mad. “Because you messed around with my wife!” Uli pours them both another drink and mocks him. “My wife. My wife. Heh-heh. How macho-o-o!” Bobo grabs him by the collar and yells at him. “You continued sleeping with her and had unprotected sex!!” [hacerlo a pelo] Uli apologizes for upsetting him.

Bobo gets up and looks around the apartment. “Nice apartment.” Uli lies and says he pays for it all with the money he got from Maura and the Mario Aguirre scam. Bobo says he doesn’t believe him and then accuses him of taking money from Raquel. Uli gets defensive. “So what? You yourself would have done the same!” Bobo says but this is his wife they’re talking about. Uli wants him to calm down. It’s over and she doesn’t really interest him. Anyway, he’s just passing time till his girlfriend returns from Spain. She’s worth a fortune and he’s going to marry her.

Roberto tells him to stop making things up. Uli insists he’s not making things up. He has a girl from his past that he plans to move on. He says she’s always been in love with him. She's half nuts, but he knows how to keep her under control. (I couldn’t catch the next sentence. It was all Chipmunk.) Uli says he’ll never believe it, but it just happens to be Mary Jo’s twin sister. Bobo sucks in his breath as Uli gives him a brief family history of the Samaniego’s. “The girls mother didn’t die. She met a wealthy man and ran off with him. After he died she hitched up with another man. It turns out, incredibly, that Mary Jo and Sandra are identical! As alike as two drops of water.” Bobo’s eyes are like saucers. “Does Mary Jo know about her?” Uli say no and nobody else does either. “Only you!” He told him because he loves him and because he wants them to stay friends.

Back at the manse, Nando is finishing up in the study covering the details of the (yawn) archeological project for Vicki, MJ, and Alex. MJ is thrilled to be able to help with it. Zeke interrupts to tell Vicki she has a call from Dr. Hernan. She gets up and shares an uncomfortable stare with the other puppy-dog in her life before taking the call out in the living room. Alex looks a little sheepish.

Vicki tells Hernan about the trip to the lab with Raquel. He asks her out for dinner and says it might help distract her a bit. (Dunno. A date with this guy would be more like a sure cure for insomnia than for a case of the blues, or is that just me?) She declines politely by saying it’s not the best time to be seen out with a man. He says it would have exactly the opposite effect and their being together would show she has support. He insists and she finally gives in.

Back inside the study, Vicki’s two-legged puppy-dog is pacing around. Alex sighs and says there’s no reason to pretend now since MJ knows about Fernando’s feelings for his mother. Fernando asks MJ what she thinks about it. Mary Jo gives it her blessing and says age doesn’t matter. It’s what inside that counts, yada, yada, yada….. We get the same chitchat about their being able to live in an exotic clime somewhere together. (Damn, that’s so tacky! Tell the truth, MJ. If their May-September romance were such a happening thing, escaping to never-never-land wouldn’t always have to be a part of this discussion, now would it?) Alex fawns over Mary Jo and her lovely view of life. (Time for a Red Bull.) She smiles and tells Fernando that love makes us all invincible. (Hubby gets disgusted and says make it two.) MJ and Alex continue to smooch.

On the other side of town we find Chucho telling Pedro that he can’t believe that Paula would act that way after they spent all their time fixing up and painting the place. (Dunno. Maybe it’s the color scheme, Chuch.) Pedro says Pau does have her good points. He figures the problem is that she just got used to living the good life and now he can’t give it to her. Pedro says then that he’s worried that she hasn’t come out of her room since she got there. Chucho says well, maybe they’re just worrying about nothing and she’s simply taking a nap. Pedro goes into check on her. She’s in bed, pouting and playing possum. He gives her a kiss and walks back out. Pedro is having a crisis of conscience. He feels rotten that the place isn’t up to her new standards, but Chucho tells him to give her time and eventually, when she gets over the tantrum, she’ll get used to the place. Pedro can only hope. Chucho cheers him up by reminding him that they start their new business the next morning. FF>>

Later that afternoon, Crotchya goes back to Bruno’s hotel and hands him over the file he wanted. Bruno kisses her and then dismisses her. He’s got to read through it right away because he’s meeting with the lawyers in a little bit. She’ll have to wait for her “reward” till after.

Outside the manse, Fernando is getting ready to leave and telling Vicki good-bye. He professes his love. She tells him it’s not possible for them. He says it is unless she doesn’t want it to be. Either way, he will always be waiting for her. Felipa walks out and sees him kiss her good-bye. (Totally cringeworthy.) Vicki turns around and asks her not to say a word. Felipa says she won’t, but it hurts her to see her so sad. They share a hug. FF>>FF>>

That night, Alex and Mary Jo share a peaceful sleep. It’s just as well, since the next morning all hell is about to break loose.

Fernando rushes into Alex’s office with the morning’s paper. “Have you seen the news?” Alex reads the headline: “Something very odd is going on in the Lombardo Family. It would seem that the well-known construction magnates have doubts about their background as Raquel and Bruno Alebeniz, as well as Alex Lombardo, were seen entering a genetics laboratory where DNA tests are done. This would suggest that one of them is going to surprise us with a name change.”

Alex throws the newspaper down and wonders how the Hell they found out. “Who could have gotten access to that information??” Cue the cricket chirps. Nando has no idea. He makes a quick call to Lic. Quiñones and asks him if he read the morning paper. The lawyer says yeah, and he’s just as puzzled as Alex about it. Obviously, this is a serious breach and says the judge had chosen that lab precisely to avoid this sort of thing. Alex tells him to get to the bottom of it and fast, then hangs up. He tells Nando that the lawyer doesn’t think it was either the judge or the lab that gave out the information. Who else? They come to the same conclusion simultaneously: Bruno, of course.

Vicky and Mary Jo are having another polite chat when Zeke comes in with the phone saying Bruno’s on the line asking to speak to Mary Jo. She panics and refuses to take the call, but Vicki says go ahead. She wants to listen on the extension. Mary Jo takes the phone and waits till Vicki secretly picks up in the other room. Bruno asks Mary Jo if she’s seen the newspapers. She says she hasn’t and asks why. He tells her that there’s a bit in the gossip column about him, Alex and Raqui going in for DNA tests. “Why are you so mean, Bruno?” “—Because you have to pay for everything you’ve all done to me. –Did the bastard ask you for a divorce yet?” “The divorce? Why?” “—When I gave you back your life by giving you my blood I asked Alex for two things in exchange: his giving up the presidency and divorcing you.” MJ and Mama are both saucer-eyes impactada.

Thanks for the recap, Jardinera. Funny and snarky!

MariJo must have gotten new hair extensions. It looks a lot better than the old rat's nest. Her clothes looked better, too. More like they came from a decent store, or did I imagine that?

”Vicki also wants to know if he might have some “female friend” of sorts. He answers in the negative.” At least Bobo can't be accused of lying. His double standard (You can screw me but you can't screw my wife) is ironic. : rolls eyes :

Paula needs a reality check regarding her living accommodations. At least she has a roof over her head. A little bit of community volunteer work with the homeless might serve her well. Sheesh! Get. A. Grip. Paula.

(From Thurs. comments) ”Gabriel's doctor only tells Alex that Gabe comes for therapy twice a week” So apparently there are no HIPAA rules in Mexico.

Excellent recap, Jardinera!!

I'm really curious about Alex's "playing dirty" and what it means. He was asking the lawyer about whether he had full rights over the dinero right now. Maybe he plans to give a lot of it to someone so Bruno gets bupkis. He could put it into the archaeological theme park Fernando and Vicky are planning.

Was glad to see Vicki listening in on the "real Bruno" as he snarled at MJ. Unfortunately, he got in the business about the divorce before Alex had a chance to prepare her. This seems likely to cause a rift between them.

Again I was having urges to slap Paula. Her father and Chucho knocked themselves out decorating her room. This is the man who brought her up from when she was an abandoned infant, and this is the thanks he get. I know there's a lot of disparagement of Pedro here, but the poor guy is a well-meaning soul. I think the desertion of his wife scarred him for life.

Tks Jardinera for the detailed recap since I fell asleep.

Who could have leaked the info to the press " I have no idea" Geez, I can't believe they even asked the question.

Is the reporter out to get a real story or make one up for pay? He sounds ok & I just bet he is there when Bruno goes down.

Thanks for the recap Jardinera. If Vicky (or Vacky as Susanlynn calls her) had any reservations about the wickedness of her son, she now has heard the demon speak.

Yes, Paula is a brat but as Jardinera said how you expect her to be excited about the new digs when she's lived at Casa Loca. And, aside from the new place, to have to hang around her Dad and his friend ... what young person wants to do that for an extended period of time. Finally, Pedro and Paula manage to get themselves in trouble. Perhaps being together is not the best solution for either of them.

Bobo is still a mystery to me. Useless tells him about Sandra b/c he loves Bobo but plans on marrying MJ's twin. Que??!!

Doris - HIPAA rules never seem to apply in novelas. They spill important info often and as of late more novela priests I've seen have done the same.

Novelera - I too hope Alex really does play dirty. It will be interesting to see what he does and hopefully it won't be too late to start now that MJ knows what Bruno's demands were.

Variopinta - I hope the reporter is there as a witness to Bruno's crimes.

How in the world does Bruno think he has severance pay coming to him. Last time i checked he sold his VP position for 500K because he thought he was running off with MJ.

Then when he came back he hasn't done one ounce of work. Unless he considers the board meetings to tried to get control of Lombardo Construction work?

Paula is a ungrateful brat, and community service would do her a world of good.

Katia is just a stupid skank.

Vicki now you finally hear with your own ears how selfish and evil your precious son is.

On Monday's avances Alex tells MJ they will get a divorce. But i think his plan is to remarry her official this time. So she won't ever be able to say they aren't really married.

Jardinera,

Totally awsome recap, one of my many favorite lines: “They share a little statutory romance.” Another: “It’s rough, but not exactly the roach motel that Meche or Julia live in.” So many more really cleaver lines, thanks for my weekend fun!!!

Does our hero have a plan? Please, please, please, Alex, fight fire with fire!! You need to drop the “honor” plan and go for all out war...

What the que? Roberto, who is sleeping with Ulises, is annoyed that Ulises is sleeping with Raquel, his wife, who he plans to divorce, and just “slept” with, if that is what you call their last congress. My head is spinning with all the sleeping around subplots.

Vivi, our hero had the chance to “come clean” with MJ on all the stuff that is going on, but he didn’t. Everyone in the entire novela needs to be attached to ankle bracelet lie detectors, all are holding a “little” back, except Filipa and Cuco!!! We’ll just have to be happy with the baby steps that the love birds are taking. I’m so glad that Vicky was in on the Bruno/ MJ conversation. Fun episode!

Jardinera:

You have outdone yourself, my dear. Truly your magnum opus recap, at least of all the recaps that I have read in my mere 8 months in Carayland.

Doris: Amen on the better clothes for MJ.

Doris, Novelera, et al—Paula is SO entitled, and Pedro falls for her stuff, every time.

The last five minutes oflast night's episode show made the whole telenovela worth it for me.Watching Vacky (ha-ha Susanlynn)as she hears Bruno confess his evil-doing was a five star moment for me.Yeah!

And, Vacky, I am warning you sister, I had better never hear another word of denial from your eggplant-colored lips. And while I am on the subject of your lips, that lipstick really ages you girl. If you are going to walk the walk with your hot young thing then make a stop at the Lancome counter next time you are in DF and get something a little more lively!

Elna June you're a riot but all so true. Maybe she borrowed the lipstick from La Loca on ENDA that's her favorite shade.

Don't you hate it when your love life is in the crapper, and you're forced to hang out with some lovey dovey couple in the first blush of love? Yeah, I felt Nando's pain.

Get a room you two! I actually think Vicky was giving them that very hint when Alex came home and those two forgot anyone else was in the room. Sweet seeing them have some down time playing games and spooning peacefully while sleeping.

Knew it wouldn't last long though, and of course Alex not coming clean with MJ means she was unprepared to Bruno's latest verbal assualt. At least Vicky heard the "real" Bruno this time.

-Vivi in DC

Elna June,

I can't believe you noticed her lipstick too, I've been trying to think which color she needs to try to freshen her look, maybe a terracotta color, brighter but not too bright?

Yes, Vacky, copter over to DF and visit the Lancome gals, they'll fix you up!!

Anon:
OT/Right back at you. Just replaying all the laughs you have sent my way. ENDA is VERY intense, no? And Carlota seems to take evil auntie to whole new depths. What is with the purple thing???

Sandy:

Terracotta lipstick sounds good. I am not crazy about the auburn in Vacky's hair (wig??). I think her lovely olive complexion would be heightened by some peachy shades on the cheeks and maybe her natural black hair.

Love hanging out with you kids on Saturday afternoon...

This is just my take on the color purple. I've always associated it with violence and rage , especially when people are hit and get bruises they eventually turn purple.

La Loca is always in a fit of rage, she makes mad dog Bruno look like a boy scout.

As for Enda being very intense let's just say i need to take anti depressants to get through it.

Hard liqour to deal with the stupidity of some roles on Sortilegio but yet i am in it for the long haul.

Thanks again for the detailed recap.Dear son called right in the middle of the episode and I missed some important little tidbits it seems.
I try hard to feel sorry for Paula, but sometimes she just crosses that line where you just want to slap her back to reality. Girl, MJ is selfish? Duh...one more time. MJ is married, well sort of kind of, to a Lombardo. Gives her a bit more rights to stay in the house, and want some alone time with said hubby/hunk. Repeat after me:You are an in-law. Translation, no requirement to have you live there and partake of the riches. Maybe if she would just be quietly, achingly sad MJ would garner more sympathy with her. Of course, I'm sure she'll be back.
I don't mind the idea of Fer and Vicki. Of course being closer in age to Vicki I wouldn't turn away from the possibility of such a wonderful specimen either looking my way. But I can see with all of Bruno's embarrassments now, she's probably going to not cave in to her feelings in case their relationship would become tabloid fodder too. I think she's thinking of Fer and not wanting to hurt him that way.
That whole conversation with Bobo and Uli...methinks we are getting set up for a baby Rack? Then let the games begin as to who is the baby-daddy??
I agree with all that those last few minutes, which thankfully I got to see, were priceless. Vicki, who knew there was a devious bone in your body? But boy what an earful you got while listening in. That should drop kick out of the park any doubts she had on her dear evil Bobsey twin being misunderstood or have an ounce of a heart.
Oh, and by the way, HIPAA is a US only set of regulations over medical records, etc. Almost glad the rules don't exist there.Makes these shows more fun.
There will definitely be a lot of fussing and fighting next week for sure.

This comment is frivolous I know with all the pain and suffering on ENDA, but the Spanish is so clear, it is a joy to watch. I'm just watching the last 10 to 20 minutes as I get in position for Sorti, but I feel like a native, I understand everything. Sorti can be VERY hard to decipher.

Anon, I'm with you on the purple!

Just getting up to date on the last two days. Thanks to Connie for a great and hilarious recap of Thurs. epi. Also good to hear that Kat's opening night went well.

Jardinera, thanks for that superbly written recap, with lines such as "I take time out to breathe deeply into my paper bag."

Bobo and Uli make me, as they say, throw up a little in my mouth. Now that my senses are so beaten down by the Mexitrash, I guess I look forward to Sandra's arrival. I worry that sweet MJ will be so happy to meet her long-lost sister that bad things will happen.

Anonymous said "Katia is just a stupid skank." That's true, in general, but I do give K. props for finding her way in the old files. I don't like her at all, especially as Bruno's little minion.

Sweet love scene with Alex and MJ. Also sweet that Vicki got to hear Bruno being his hateful self.
La Paloma

Jardinera, you are brilliant. You and your husband are an extraordinary couple. God bless you guys for all the laughs you give me. :-) Really, you guys are amazing.

I didn't catch the entire episode, but I am super
glad that Victoria heard the conversation between MJ and Bruno as well.

Still haven't read all the comments but will definetely get to them in a few minutes.

Great news everyone!

Fernando Colunga nad Lucero (Alborada, MEPS) are coming back together in 2010 in a new TN called " La Duena de tu Amor" produced by Nicando diaz. It is another remake but still...

Why can't they make original tn anymore. For the past few years all the tns have been remakes.

http://telenovelashunks.blogspot.com/

Hi ya! Well looks like luck may finally be on Mary Jo's side now that Victoria decided to do a little detective work on her own and listen in. I never saw it coming and that made the whole episodio for me worth the price of the toothpicks.
=========
Got to say about the two adoni "basking in the afterglow" was a classic of a keeper, Connie. Two gorgeous bods but might as well be tainted meat.

Jardinera- Thanks so much for the great recap. I meant to thank you in my earlier comment, but my dinner guests were just about to knock on my door and I had to run. Now they're gone and I can get back to you all. :) I love the fact that you include your husband's thoughts and reactions to the action happening on screen. You guys make a great comedy team. Lol!

"Useless tells him about Sandra b/c he loves Bobo but plans on marrying MJ's twin. Que??!!"
Karen - Sandra has money. Useless needs money to live, preferably UN-earned, so he'll live off Sandra's money. Just like Bobo lives off Raqi's $.

Novelera: I'm really curious about Alex's "playing dirty" and what it means. He was asking the lawyer about whether he had full rights over the dinero right now. Maybe he plans to give a lot of it to someone so Bruno gets bupkis.

Yes, indeed. I think Alex will do something of the sort as well. Possible candidates, MJ, Victoria, and Fernando.

Anon: On Monday's avances Alex tells MJ they will get a divorce. But i think his plan is to remarry her official this time. So she won't ever be able to say they aren't really married.

Sounds like a plan. Sounds pretty smart too, hopefully it's were he's headed with all of this.

It's late but I need to say this was a particularly terrific recap.

Sandy in TN--I agree that ENDA is easier to understand than Sortie, but I think it has more to do with the sound. They must have the actors wear microphones on different parts of their bodies and the rustling as they move drowns out the spoken lines.

Remember when Alex got out of the shower a couple of episodes ago? All he was doing was wrapping his towel around his loins but it sounded like someone was wrapping up fish in newspaper.

Whenever they are shooting outside or in a restaurant, the background noise is louder than the conversations of the persons we are really interested in hearing.

The music gets too loud, too. Well, at least Sortilegio has several hunks to feast the eyes on, even though we may not be able to hear every lucious word, whereas ENDA doesn't (don't get me wrong, I love that TN, too).
Newbie in Md

Newbie, I agree. This recap was too good. Great job, Jardinera.

Hi Jardinera. Let me join the chorus of those who say this was one of your best ever. You cracked me up from the get-go with your wry alliterative opening paragraph. For some reason, your style makes me think of Bette Davis. Sort of an "oh gaaaawd...can you believe what these poor dolts are doing now" stance that leads to all kinds of wonderful asides. Like another commenter, I loved the line about "breathing heavily into a paper bag". And needing to go for a Red Bull....make that two!

And of course I always appreciate the translations. "Nota sociedad" and "pura vacilada" are going in my language notebook. Gracias, amiga.

Doris: I forgot about the magic of hair extensions, but it works! As fof g.a.g. Paula, (LOL!) I think she has more than a little of La Elena running through her veins. I felt sorry for the two old men. They definitely did the best they could to make the place nice and to give it a real homey atmosphere.
===============
Novelera: I think Alex might be thinking of putting a few anvils in place for El Bruto. I can't wait to see what he's got in mind and how it plays out.
===============
Variopinta: Having the reporter in place for a story only to see Bruto gets his come-uppance and report it in 4 columns would be real cosmic justice. ¡Ojala!
==============
Karen: ITA "to have to hang around her Dad and his friend ... what young person wants to do that for an extended period of time?" Wish I'd said that! I also think she needs to find some decent friends her own age. Neither she nor MJ have any, did you notice?
===========
Anon, 12/5/ 6:27PM - Sorry for the confusion in my writing, but since Erick was the one fired, I meant it as Erick getting his own severance paycheck. !: {

Sandy/Doris: IMHO, I think the big fight between Useless Uli and Bobo had to do with his not wanting any kids from another man to have to be responsible for, especially since he despises Raqui so much. Hell, he won't even take responsibility for himself! He was angry that Uli had unprotected sex, not because of disease, since he's screwing around with him too, but because of possible little iligitomo's crumb-crunching through the pesos.
===============
SandyTN: this episodio was a bit more lively than last weeks. Cuko now knows as much as Felipa --and he's not talkin'!
=======
Elna June: It was a "5-star moment" for me, too. In a way, I think MJ will be forwarned about the divorce and will be more likely to plot with Alex to get him some venganza.
==============
ViviDC: "Don't you hate it when your love life is in the crapper, and you're forced to hang out with some lovey dovey couple in the first blush of love?" A great way of putting it, and I think that could be said for Vicki too.
==========
daisynjay: Welcome! "HIPAA is a US only set of regulations over medical records, etc. Almost glad the rules don't exist there.Makes these shows more fun." Isn't that the truth!!

Thank you, Jardinera. This novela is so very snark-worthy, and you have done a great job of capturing the goofy and goofier with wit and creativity.

Is this the same Carla who brought us the three wonderful novelas de epoca? No matter -- I'm hooked.

La Paloma: LOL! Strange how a little line about breathing into the paper bag hits home. We must have been thinking the same thing, and it's like Anon. says, a lot in this show makes me "as they say, throw up a little in my mouth."
=============
Cielo/Vivi/JudyB: LOL! "Hubby" just likes seeing his name in print! He and Mr. 5ft come up with some great off the cuff comments. Something --always--coming from the popcorn gallery makes me crack up with these novelas. They're ripe for it.
==========
Newbie: LOL! "All [Alex] was doing was wrapping his towel around his loins but it sounded like someone was wrapping up fish in newspaper." Glad it wasn't just me and my audio. ITA the sound quality in these things leaves lots to be desired. Just adds to the charm of Mexican telenovela-dom. > ; > )

Hey, Traveling Lady! Where ya been? Guess that's a rhetorical question, huh! Yep, it's the same ol' Carla. Different time frame, but similar timing so there's always a little something exciting happening to keep us waiting for and wanting more.
=========
JudyB: LOL! Bette Davis is an actress I watch any chance I can. I've seen most of the stuff she was in I bet. Maybe it's rubbed off, but when I do the hammy wordplay schtick it somehow just works out to emphasize the ubermelodrama of the schtick in these things we've gotten addicted to. Embarrassing, but true.

Great recap and comments! I felt sorry for the old guys, too. Pau was pretty bratty on that one.

Felipa is holding a tidbit back, I think, she hasn't revealed what she knows about Raq to Vick, has she?

I find the amante friendship between Bobo and Uli interesting. Uli messing around with Raq didn't cause any sexual jealousy or yuck feelings. Bobo felt betrayed but Uli making it up to him by telling him the secret, different.

So true that La Loca from ENDA makes Bruto look like a boyscout. I didn't see much of the Telenovela awards, and didn't really understand, they were for 2009, right? She didn't get best antagonista? Of course, I didn't see any of the other TNs.

Great fun to read your recap this morning, Comadre Jardinera! So right about the mercy killing before turning into a Raquel, or I might add a Pedro. Pedro showed another fine example of parenting skills by trying to talk MJ into letting Paula stay at the Lombardos. And Paula should be added into that list of delusional whiners...
jb

Nathalie, tks for the great news about La dueña de tu amor. Looking forward to seeing my true love FC back, hopefully after Corazón Salvaje

Also forgot to mention I loved Bobo's answer to Vick about him possibly having a novia - he didn't lie, technically.

Jardinera thanks for the clear up and wonderful recap.

Ivy any novela that finished after March in Mexico will be up for the awards for next year.

Nathalie is the same La Duena De tu Amor that Silvia Navarro was up for?

Newbie sorry i missed the sound when Alex was wrapping the towel around his loins. Too engrossed with the visual.

ITA this by far is the worst audio i have ever heard for a novela.

I don't get it, I know they are not Hollywood productions, but we've had water running, motorcycles, loud music, background noise that I have no idea what it is, in all the novelas. I thought there was someone in charge of that, sound tech or sth.

Thank you for the recap Jardinera, I still occasionally read them because I love your style full of details. It trully feels like watching the novela while I read.

Jarocha

Colunga is confirmed for "La Dueña de Tu Amor" but Lucero has said no word, she has been too busy with the Teletón that televisa had yesterday. There's been alot of names mentioned for the main role: Silvia Navarro, Lucero, Gaby Spanic, Yadhira Carrillo, Jaqueline Bracamontes, Ludwika Paleta, etc. The executives of Televisa wanted Navarro and Sebastián Rulli but Nicandro Díaz wanted Colunga and Adela Noriega. Noriega has signed with Telemundo so she won't do it. Navarro has been approached for the role but so far it seems she hasn't said yes as she is busy with a theater play.

David Zepeda will be in the novela, Ana Martin too. No word on the lead or the female villain (there's three villains, one female, two males).

Funny thing is that in "La Dueña" from 1996, the male lead, Francisco Gattorno was 28 years old and he is now the around the same age as Colunga. Angélica Rivera played the main role, it was her big break, she was just 25.

Jarocha

Sorry, "La Dueña" is from 1995.

Jarocha

Thanks, Jarocha. I always love your detailed comments about what's going on in the world of novelas!

Can you post a brief idea of what this novela will be? Is it a novela de epoca or a modern day one?

It's a modern novela. The main character has suffered from a deception and she lets anger consume her and she becomes cold and cruel. She is very rich and she owns an important Hacienda as well as most of the small town near it, everybody there fears her and believes her to be a despicable person. There is another Hacienda neighboring hers that is in shambles and she wants to own it too, but the son of the owner is back in town and he wants to rebuild it, he is very idealistic and a romantic and when he mets her he decides to pursue her to see if there's a good person underneath. There's more but I don't want to say too much.

Jarocha

Thanks, Jarocha. I was hoping for a novela de epoca. Maybe it's true what I read somewhere that Colunga was tired of long hair!

Finally have gotten around to doing what I've wanted to do all weekend, but was too busy: read Jardinera's recap and everyone's comments. What a kick to finally get here. You knocked me over, Jardinera. Loved so many witticisms, but dropped the mouse over "Crotchya." Don't know what you do for a living, but you sure could be a comedy writer.

That kid (Katia)really has become more than a heiffer in training; she's a card-carrying slutty Mexitrash member-in-full and loving every minute of it. Sure hope some of that can be held over Bruno's head for at least a little blackmail.

With the leading questions Bobo asked Uli about condoms, looks like Raquel will be getting preggers for sure, which will probably stop the divorce. Cannot wrap my head around Raqui as mommy though...

I wonder if we don't have an AIDS theme coming up rather than a pregnancy.

Jardinera - It's taken me a while to warm to this one. The lurid, dark side of the classy classes turned me off. I had the same problem with Alborada. I'm always looking for the sunny side, I guess. Or strong, smart heros (like FC in Pasion). Anyway, I'm in now and will be checking these wonderful summaries more often.

TG Adela Noriega has another commitment, I don't want Bracamantes either. Lucero, Silvia Navarro, Spanic, Yadhiro would be fine with me. Just so Colunga doesn't have a virginal part. At his age that is ridiculous. He's a hot middle aged hunk.

El joven Levy is a baby & he is not virginal, a little more realistic.

Traveling Lady, could well be an AIDS theme coming up instead of a pregnancy. Just thought that Uli's comment about not being "sure" he used a condom every time with Raquel(how weird it that from an actively bi guy?) left the preggers door open, but you sure could be right. Going to be anvil time either way.

ITA about the lurid side to this TN; it's one of the edgiest I can remember in the last few years.

As always - great work Jardinera - thanks. In the past we have discussed the Mexican justice system. I had some experience of this this past week. I spent the Thanksgiving weekend in Cancun - got out of there ASAP to see the incredible Mayan ruins.

I caught a taxi back to the airport and the police stopped the driver as he was speeding. He got out of the taxi and came back quite soon. He gave the police 350 pesos - about 25 dollars. I was upset and asked a guy at the airport about this. His nonchalant reply was that this was Mexico. He said it was better for the driver and for the police - oh well!!

Lynne

Thanks again, guys. Glad it was worth the ride. ; ? )
=================
Comadrejb: Paula's tantrums are starting to get to me, too. I figure if a decent novio comes out of somewhere the telenovela gods will make her come around and "mature". I like it when she defends her sister, though. The kick she gave Erick the other day was great.
==========
Ivy: I was thinking the same thing about this "amiga" technicality. Then the camera focused on Paula coming out of the house. UH-OH was all I could think.
============
HGR/Traveling Lady: You mentioned the AIDS thing and I had been thinking that it would be a great punishment for all three in that crazy triangle. Then the thought of Raquel getting pregnant didn't make me think it would happen.
===========
Jarocha: Wow! Navarro is worth watching in anything, and so is Yaddi. They are both favorites of mine, and I don't remember Yadhira, who is closer in age to FC, ever playing opposite him. I think if they're using older actors then that's the pair I'd choose. I think Navarro and Rulli would have been close enough to the right ages and would have been terrific together also.

Hubby will be surprised and saddened to hear that Adela is gone since we only get one Spanish language channel.

Lynne: Great to see you made it back to us in one piece. I was in Cancun a couple of years ago and those kinds of stories are definitely the norm.

Jarocha and Variopinta:

Thanks for the info on upcoming attractions featuring the wonderful Fernando Colunga. I am so knocked out by that man! And I love Silvia Navarro as an actress.

Big grin in anticipation...

Doris - Thanks for your comment and I wanted to state my true question. Though Useless wants MJ's twin for her money, he keeps talking about how he was in love with her. The bottom line is the writers have made both Useless and Bobo so morally dubious that when they say they are in love or love someone, I'm always questioning what does that exactly mean? Will they find women and keep one another on the side so monogamy is never an option for them? Is this a passing thing? Or will they finally declare they love one another? Typically in novelas even if the guy is not a saint (like Alex) true love makes him change he ways (for the most part). Hence the sexual and moral ambiguity of Useless and Bobo makes their statements more puzzling than clarifying.

Also, I think Bobo does like Paula but again who knows what that means. On one hand if he continues to make moves in her direction it could mean true love b/c he is SO about money. The other hand is back to my confusion.

Traveling Lady and HGR - yes, this novela has been more lurid (great word) than what I've seen in the past.

Jarocha - thanks for the novela news. You are always so information. I hope you are well.

Karen: The Paula/Bobo combo would be nice if he wasn't such a slug and was involved with a guy. Paula couldn't handle that kind of background IMHO. Anyway, it's one thing to worry about another woman, but having to be jealous about both a man and a woman???

I'm leaning toward Bobo revealing the nice guy side of his dual personality in his actions toward Paula. I think he's just being nice to her, sensing she's sort of a fish out of water in the Casa de Lobos. He also may have hoped for some inside information on how Alex and MJ and Bruno came to be in a triangular relationship.

I think he also finds her refreshing. She can be very cute and personable when she isn't faced with expulsion from paradise. I don't see them ending up together.

I can't help it; I totally like Marcelo as an actor and always try to scoot him away from the dark side!

Let's please not put Paula (as annoying as she is) into the hands of a violent woman abuser.

Jardinera, this was a masterful recap. The first paragraph alone had was filled with wonderful alliteration and fun, snarky opinions galore.

You noted a few words for pigsty. Friday's episode of Gancho had another - chiquero. Wonder why Spanish has so many words for this.

I've said before that I watch with a bit of detachment, so nothing bothers me, such as Vicki/Fernando, Bruno/Katia or Roberto/Ulises. In fact, since they show the first two pairs kissing, what about a kiss between Roberto and Ulises? Yeah, I know many viewers don't like this, but come on, fair is fair. And these guys are actors. Let's see how far that method acting can take them!

Someone remarked that Paula shouldn't complain since she got the TV. Did anyone notice that's the one thing NO ONE does on telenovelas - watch TV? Alex's mansion should have a few giant HD screens, but we never see them.

And how come the only form of birth control that exists is a condom? What about the pill, IUD, diaphragm? I mean, the women could have some responsibility in this, too, right?

I do like the idea that Alex could give his money away, maybe to MJ, after divorcing her. But could he trust her? (I'm thinking back to Lety in LFMB).

Thanks, Jardinera, for that witty , as always, recap. It was a busy weekend [getting my syllabi ready for next semester, hauling out the decorations, etc] , so I haven't had a chance to ''drop by'' until now. We went to a charity concert on Sat.night [Duprees, Lou Christie, Gary Puckett] , and I could tell that I have become obsessed with these novelas because so many songs remined me of Sorti....''Young Girl'' [change it to ''Young Guy'' for VickyVacky]...''You Belong to Me'' for Burno's obsession with MJ...''Two Faces Have I'' ...hello, Roberto o o ] Nathalie and Jarocha, thanks for the info on FC's next novela. I'm sad that it's not an epoca and that Adela has moved to Telemundo [I think I get that channel, too] because I liked her in Amor Real with FC. I am happy that Corazon Salvaje will follow this novela , and then , I'll have FC's new one to look forword to after that. I'm not too concerned that the Mexican audience is'' not liking it'' [Corazon Salvaje] Remember that they also were not fond of Pasion , but many of us here loved it. Different strokes for different folks...''and so on and so on and scubby dooby doo''...Shout out to Sly.

Hombre~~~You're right about most novelas featuring houses lacking TV sets. The exception to that rule was Destilando Amor. Gaviota's mother was a big novela fan and adored her big screen which I think she lost for awhile when they fell on hard times.

Hombre de Misterio - in CCEA, Marichuy's guardian 'Candi' watched FELS on her TV. (talk about product placement!)

Hombre: When you're right, you're right. Fair is fair, but if it happens on one of my nights, then Katy bar the door. My paper bag will be doing double duty and I may find it hard, but I will give both sides of that storyline. That bed scene the other night had me going. I concentrated on Marcelo's half of that bed to get me through it. JMNSHO.
; > )
===============
Susanlynn: Since we're spending our holiday away, we decided not to put up anything this time. Well, it just makes me appreciate everyone else's that much more, I guess. Snow is due here and instead of digging out the old decorations, that will give me the urge to buy NEW ones to at least put on the door. ;?}

Loved your list of ditties for the Sort characters. Perfect! Did you know you can find old video's of Gary Puckett and the others singing at live concerts on YouTube? Sometimes I've done that for grins and boy does it bring back memories. Great tunes, too!

Okay, let's put it this way - the rich folks don't have TV's. That alone tells us they're not as cool as the poor folks.

One of Adela Noriega best novelas was Guadalupe with Eduardo Yanez for Telemundo.

Anon 6:35 it's hard for me to feel sympathetic with Paula because of her whining and brattiness. As it has been mentioned before, she not the one married to Alex MJ is.

Paula needs to learn to stand on her own two feet and not depend on her rich brother in law.

If she's that ashamed of being with her father move out and get a job.

As for her and Roberto even though she is a couple of years older than Katia. I think Roberto sees her like a younger sister. I don't think he will cross that line either.

That would definitely not sit well with MJ, and Alex who wants to please MJ.

More Bobo defense. The "rape" of Raquel started out pretty scary, but she ended up totally liking it. A case could be made, especially since he's been married to this witch a while, that he knew full well how she'd react in the end.

Please don't flame me as a reactionary female in favor of male domination. I'm just making the point that many couples interact sexually in ways that are somewhat outside the norm.

I have so enjoyed the beautiful relationship that seems to be developing between MJ and Vicky. You know, MJ has never been able to be a child in the family, always the mom. For whatever reason, Vicky's relationship with Raquel is terrible, I think that they can bring out hidden, supressed feelings in each other and end up as best friends. They need each other, hope it lasts.

Novela ~ HEh ..Yes, and Roberto o o and Raq are wayyyy outside the norm. Those two are definitely a kinky couple . Jardinera~ Last night, someone in the audience was videotaping Lou Christie's performnance , and several times he commented that he would probably end up on Youtube [in his green sequined shirt, no less !!!] I've watched several episodes of Guadalupe on Youtube, and...wow....I think Adela and Big Ed must have set a record in that one for kissing scenes...wow.

Sorry ~~~ Novelera ...I'm trying to do too many things at once as the weekend rolls to a close, and I didn't proofread. Jardinera ~ Yesterday was snowy and messy here, but today the roads are clear. I guess we got about 3 inches of very wet snow. The trees did look pretty as did the Christmas lights glowing in the pure, white snow. However, I hate to drive in the stuff and agree with Camus that snow is ''the leprosy of nature'' if I have to drive in it.

Novelera: well put and no reason to even think of considering you reactionary--just reacting. "Outside the norm" is putting it mildly, too! LOL!

Sandy ~ I agree that the relationship that seems to be developing between MJ and Vacky is sweet and will be good for both of them. MJ needs a mother , and Vacky could use a daughter who's not BSC.

Susanlynn: I like snow in small doses. I can appreciate why my Norwegian DIL now prefers tropical and semi-tropical climes like southern Spain and Florida. LOL!

SandyTN: you're probably on to something with this substitute mother comparison. At least Victoria is making the effort. They do both need each other, don't they.

On the new novela with FC, If I had a vote I'd choose Gabriela Spanic or Yadhira, they are closer in age to FC than Sylvia. Yadhira could play the bad girl brought into the light by FC very well.

MEPS was hard on everyone, the actors and viewers, but even trying to give Lucero a break for that, I thought she was stiff and plastic through out the entire thing. She was up against Sylvia in many scenes and that may have diminished her appeal.

I think you guys are right about MJ and Vicky. MJ has never been mothered, and has never been allowed to be a kid. Now she has Alex taking care of her, and Vicky starting to take on a nuturing role with her. And for Vicky, it must seem so strange to have a "daughter" who doesn't just take, take, take. She was genuinely surprised that MJ wouldn't want to sponge off the Lombardos some more and have her Papa and sis stay in the guest house. She even said so to MJ.

Hombre- I think you're right about where/who Alex will give his money to. MJ is a great candidate that he can trust. But I would worry about what lengths Bruno, Team Mexitrash, or even Mama Elena or Sis Sandra would go to to get their hands on any cash that landed in MJ's hands. She would have a huge target on her back, just like Alex has now.

-Vivi in DC

I can really relate to the mother/ DIL thing. It was so nice to have a girl in the family after only a son and husband for so many years. My DIL and I have a big time rolling our eyes and laughing at "the guys". A solid MJ/Vicky relationship would be a wonderful place to take viewerville in the novela, plus I have always liked a little girl power thrown into a mix! Alex really wants this as well.

Karen:
I think that the telenovela's writers have written the two bi characters as bi-moral. Their bi-sexuality is being used as a weird plot device and does not follow any sensible pattern.

I still think Bobo is more into to Uli than the reverse, but I can see how he could be charmed by Paula. Someone with her background is relatively unknown to him and, for all her brattiness, she is courageous, something that Roberto is manifestly NOT. Roberto is weak, manipulative and venal and Paula is strong, manipulative and greedy—let's just say they understand one another.

I hope they do not pair Paula with Roberto because she would be stuck with a lying cheat who is not likely to commit to her.

I still think Marcelo is a hunk. I wish I liked his character better.

Novelera...I was relieved to read your reaction to the violent sex scene between Roberto and Raquel because I had a similar one.

And I think one reason Raquel was pleased was...for once...Roberto was paying intense attention to her. Much of her stridency and shrillness seems to be an attempt to "get" to him...and he always remains cool and detached. That one time, she broke through his cool and the strong emotions, fear, surprise, momentary terror, etc. gave the coupling an extra kick for her.

Yes, it's waaaay outside the norm, but she was pleased by it rather than damaged. So I do not consider it rape. Is the relationship dysfunctional? Yes. And so are the two individuals in it. But, for once, Raquel was the absolute center of her husband's attention...and that is what she's always wanting.

Of course she's also wanting that with Ulysses and with her mother. And ultimately getting just crumbs from all of them. (Not that I can blame them.)

Jardinera, me darlin', thanks for the awesome recap and mah-velously sharp snark. We were grabbing a Red Bull at the same time, you, your hubby, and I. ROFL Thanks for ID'ing the newspaper guy, Saldivar. I didn't recognize him for some reason (was his hair longer before, maybe?).

Oh for Pete's sake, just go ahead and plaster a huge close-up of El Bruno on the front of Merida Today, with SOY HIJO DE UNA RAMERA!!!!! in massive red letters across it. And a "just say no" circle across his face. Gah.

I swear, Raquel reminds me more and more of those whirling dervish folk over in Russia. Legs akimbo, arms straight out from their sides, spinning like a top for hours and hours without getting dizzy.

Yay! No more Marquess de Queensbury!! (Though they're not fooling me... Alex will still have to fight clean-dirty. He'll still have limits. You watch.)

I can't believe El Bruno actually left the Manse without a fight. Maybe that underage tenderloin he's been grilling has taken his edge off.

Crotchya?? LOL! The sound of that reminds me of crotch rot.

Boy, MJ and A-rod were saccarin-sweet, huh? :D My blood sugar dang near hit 600. But I did enjoy it, very much--because I'm not sure which other shoe is about to drop on Monday. Drats.

My favorite scene of the night--Vicky running to listen in on the extension as El Bruno talked his tripe to MJ. Honestly, he needs to get himself to a school for villany, with a quickness. Your grade for this episode, Senor Albeniz, is an F-. Hahahahaha.

Thanks again, Jardinera. Morning, mates. :)

Love the recap Jardinera. Buttlick is my new favorite name for Erik. It describes him so precisely. Haven't had a chance to read all the comments yet. More later.

Good morning y'all. Just a quick check in 'fore I hit the road.
----------
I am excited to see tonight's show because it has to be a great one. Anxious to see how the big "D" is masterfully dealth with.
======
JudbyB: your insights are priceless and always gives one pause. You've obviously kept your sense of humor despite some major bumps along the way.
===========
Stephe: Add "underage tenderloin he's been grilling" to Crotchya's nicknames! LOL! Great way to start my morning, girlfriend!
=========
Connie: I'll miss responding to your comments, but I gotta git. See y'all t'nite.

Great comments everyone! Thanks for updating the list Stephe. I'm not sure which fight was my favorite. Maybe the one in the dining room or the one at the meeting. That one was two-for-the price-of-one.

Interesting comments all around on the "rape?" scene between Roberto and Raquel. I am leaning in the other direction, I didn't see a fun little game between two "game players", but an abuse of sorts. Words really fail me to describe exactly WHAT it was. When the episode ended, Raquel did look happy as if she finally had the attention of her husband and she even in a way tried to compliment him or lean toward him emotionally, but he threw the part of the dress at her, told her to cover herself and stomped out, no love, no giggles, no NOTHING on his part. Then he ran over to Useless's place and said that he had asserted his sexual rights so she couldn't divorce him on the grounds that he isn't a "husband". I guess everyone is correct in saying that it wasn't rape, but it was in no way a mutually fulfilling game either. The issue I have with the scene is that real rapist and child abusers use the "She wanted it, She liked it," as their defense. That theme is even used by defense lawyers in sexual child abuse cases. It is just a scene that crossed a line for me, and I'm disappointed that a WOMAN would go there, Carla I mean. There is lots of wacky power sex in novelas, Alborada, Amor Real, but for me, this one was too much.

Mis dos centavos.

Amen Sandy in TN. The worst of this would be that Roberto somehow is "redeemed" at the end. He's an adult and his behaviour is underlyingly nasty; people don't just all of a sudden become "unviolent." Thus he better not "get the girl," be that Paula, or any other.

It was rape. I don't care what anybody says. It was abusive, it was violent, and it was about power.

Thanks, JudyB, for your thoughtful response to my comment about Bobo and Raquel. It's what I thought at the time, and I haven't changed my mind. You expressed it VERY well, adding that she was pleased to have gotten some response out of him.

I respect the opinions of those who felt otherwise, who lost all respect for Bobo after what happened between he and Raquel. And who's to say the writers didn't intend what Connie and others felt. Sometimes it seems as if these novelas are like Rorschach tests for the viewers!

I didn't mean for my comment to come out so abrupt. I was in a hurry.

Stephe:

You have now carved out a new role in Carayland—our comrade statistician. This list is a scream.

And though you always crack me up,I must congratulate you on a way-beyond-good compilation. Where were you when I was sitting in my B-O-R-I-N-G Stat classes?

All of the dear recappers and many of our regular bloggers have such a way with words...vigate1

Connie, I did not take your comment as being at all rude. You're not the only one on Caray who feels the way you do. As I said in my earlier post, I respect everyone's opinions here and never meant my Bobo comments as saying anyone else's opinion had less value than my own.

Do you think the writers of these shows ever listen to us or read our comments? Wouldn't that be great if they did occasionally?!

Rorschch test indeed!

Heavy test warning/hard stuff follows. Skip this comment if you want to stay lite.

Deep breath. Por favor, no flaming please. There is a difference between rough sex and rape. I appreciate JudyB and Novelera's take on this incident but I must respectfully disagree.

Many moons ago I started a rape crisis center and then ran a battered women's shelter. I later worked with victims of the rape camps in Bosnia.

Over those years we worked really hard to change some of the perceptions of rape and consent, esp. in legislation. For example, in many states a woman could not be considered to have been raped if she admitted to having an orgasm during the incident.

I guess for me it still boils down to two issues—consent and intent. If a person's INTENT is to rape then it is rape. If the woman has not given her CONSENT it is rape. As Connie, Anon. and others have said, To me rape is about power.

Legally the writers in Sorti have presented us with a real dilemma. Raquel's sick need for attention may have made her "enjoy" the sexual assault. But Roberto's intent was, for sure, to show her who was boss.

Of course, there are a wide range of sexual behaviors, but what characterizes those that are "rough" sex or S&M is consent—an agreed upon set of limits and behaviors.

I cannot absolve Roberto of his intent, regardless of Raquel's reaction.

JMHO

Well said Elna June.

I'd have to go back and watch that scene again (not that I really want to) but I seem to remember that Bobo's attitude was "I'll show you who is boss." "Take that you vaca." That was just my impression at the time.

Is anyone getting snow yet? My head tells me we will be getting something very soon. My friends call me "weather-head." Said affectionately of course!

Pobrecita Raquel. I'm beginning to feel sorry for her, not enough to want to associate with her however.

She has an esposo that can't stand her, a lover that thinks she's loca, a bro that uses her & a mother that dismisses her.

It would be interesting to know how the relationship was before she & Roberto married.

The Raquel/Bobo relationship seems to be an abusive one on both sides. Before the crazy rape/rough sex scene (I am still scratching my head over that one), we saw Raquel verbally and physically abusing Bobo (slaps, throwing things at him, etc.), without hesitation- which leads me to believe this has been going on for a long time. We have come in on this relationship a long way into it, remember. These two haven't just met or just gotten married. Yes, what Bobo did/attempted to do was rape. Which, as mentioned before, is about power and control. But Raquel has been abusively weilding power/control in that relationship for a long time (control of money, physical abuse of Bobo, and emotional abuse of Bobo), and I think we are seeing him at the end of his rope. They are both abusive and are both seriously screwed up. Where's Dr. Phil?...

-Vivi in DC

Wow..I'm just back to read the comments that posted after I left for work this morning....Very interesting. Elna ~ You've had some very interesting experiences in your work. Counseling rape victims must be demanding, difficult work. Listening to their stories can't be easy. Our local newspaper just reported that a 90-year-old woman was raped. Dreadful . I wonder what the writers were trying to do by showing us that bizarre scene.

OT--The Plaza lights just came on. So beautiful. And yes, I did get behind a horse on Friday! Ack!

Susanlynn: "I wonder what the writers were trying to do by showing us that bizarre scene."

I think your comment cuts to the core of my annoyance, what were they thinking? As the scene started, I thought it was a "dream sequence" or a joke. When it ended, it was if the scene was copied and pasted into our little novela. In my opinion, a theme like this is a dangerous, slippery slope for a female director. Even bigger, where will Roberto be en el fin!

You know what, there isn't enough "flaming" on this board to light even one limb of my Christmas tree. I love the free wheeling discussions we have here and like Novelera said, I respect everyone's opinions!!

Elna June, wow, wow, wow on your life experiences!!! Glad you're here!!

Sandy et al:

I, too, so appreciate the diverse views, experiences and humor of this group.

Hey, where are our man-citizens of Carayland today? We haven't HEARD from you...You don't write, you don't call...big giggle.

And, Sandy, you probably have it summed up best about the writers, "What were they thinking"?

Alright, I am so done with this topic.;), I promise. Sorry if my comments earlier came across as negative or strong.

I'm done with it too, Elna June, but your post was not at all negative. You obviously have given a lot of thought and have real-world experience around the issue of rape. You make excellent points.

OK, me too...I'm done.

Hi there! Just back myself and I must say I missed some really interesting discussions.
==========
Elna June: If you check back in I sure would like to know in what capacity you managed to get over to Bosnia. I met a lady National Guard and she was heading back there. She was admin and so was her husband. We had a great chat in a doc's waiting room.

BIG OT

Hi, Jardinera:

I was one of a group of North American women who co-founded something called the STAR project. The funding for the project was primarily USAID with some UN money. We were doing sustainable development, technical and peer support work for some of the 10,000 women and kids who were sent through the 'Rape Camps'. I worked mostly at a recovery and relocation camp called Medica Zenica.

I am glad to hear that the folks over there are still getting support. They need it!

I was in Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Macedonia off and on from 1993-2000 (based in London).

I agree with Vivi's comment--both Bobo and Raq are very abusive people.

He has been physically abused by her for the longest time, while up until "the incident," his thing has been verbal takedowns (until she puts hands on him and he grabs her). They should both be taken to task for their actions, not just one of them. Raquel shouldn't get a free pass just because of her lack of familial love (heck, that would give a hell of a lot of people a free pass for bad behavior on this planet).

Bobo's intent at the beginning and during the incident was power and control. Using sex as a weapon to show who was boss. Rape. I don't excuse him of that and never will. However, I also think he seriously let his emotions eff him up, rather than there being some rapist lurking inside him waiting to come out. His characterization throughout the entire story and up to now tell me just that.

At the beginning of the incident, Raquel was definitely a victim. But then, before Bobo could even GET OUT OF HIS PANTS, she was wrapping herself around him and clinging to the man in ecstacy before the screen faded to white (not to black, mind you). Consent. She liked what he was doing and gave him permission to continue. She didn't give in to save her life, or just take it to keep from being injured, or retreat inside herself to not feel it. She reveled in it, took great pleasure in it, and had always wanted that from him (her own words).

For me, Raquel's own viewpoint effectively turned Roberto's intent into rough sex.

I personally know the difference between consenting in order to stop being hit, and consenting because you are turned on. (Orgasm doesn't come into play either way, IMHO, as that is an occurence highly controlled by reflex.) Bobo's actions bother me, but not where Raquel is concerned. Her character is bearing no ill effects from what happened (whereas she bears a LOT of issues from her familial life), and in fact she would request sex with him like that every night if she could get it. And if that's her thing, more power to her. Have fun. But if that's your thing, you are not being raped.

Just my honest and personal opinion. Sorry if it disturbs anyone. I've tried to hold it back and finally just couldn't.

Okay--I'm done with the Bobo/Raquel incident if you all are.

The nice thing about this site is that people can express their true feelings without getting flamed. That scene certainly caused some strong reactions and emotions. We always have great discussions....sometimes lighthearted and funny and others heavy and serious. Spectacular.

I'm done too. I've been waiting all day to hear from my son. It is so frustrating to not be able to pick up the phone and call him. One of the guys in his unit was killed in an explosion over the weekend. I'm trying to find out what happened.

So sorry to hear that Connie. I hope that your son and his unit are coping with the loss, and that you hear from him very soon. Sending very good vibes your and your son's way.

-Vivi in DC

Ohhhhhh... so sorry, Connie. How awful. *hugs* And that soldier's poor family...

Connie~ Here come some more good vibrations ))))))))))))))))))))))))))) I am keeping you and yours in my thoughts and prayers.

Connie: You are one of ours and I've never said anything, but everytime I hear of anything like that I immediate worry about you and your son. I'm praying for you and keeping my fingers crossed he's fine. You get a big hug from me, too.

P.S. My thoughts and prayers are with the unfortunate family who gets that bad news, also.

Connie:

My heart breaks for you—how utterly awful.

All my thoughts and prayers are with you, your son, his fellow soldiers and with that brave young man's family.

EJ

Thanks everyone. You don't know how much that means to me. He sent me an IM last night around midnight my time and unfortunately I was in bed. He said he would be calling me hopefully today. Not sure if he is allowed to talk about it though.

I love the way Alex looks at Mary Jo when she i stalking about the places where Nando and Vic could go living. I think William's face is priceless :) And I love the way Alex hugs MJ in that scene
