Corazon Salvaje Wed. March 3 - Shipboard Romance Sprouts Everywhere

Heaving bodices, twisted corsets, Shirtless savages, oh my!

Are you playing with fire? Regina asks Aimee. This hombre is Juan del Diablo . She is looking for this man and just this kind of trouble.

The red lips are on Juan’s mind. She is identical me . She will be mine whatever price , Aimee.

Next Morning Juan bursts in to the twins’ room and says Santa Regina! Said saint hides behind her clothes. He calls her modest (recatada). What do you want. Absolutely nothings. She is so mad at this so he in this cabin (camarote) there you are with a man alone. He climbs on her bed and taunts her and laughs at her that she told her sister and father that he is a gentleman.

Federico the fop shows up on the deck with the troop of “Ladies” and introduces himself as Federico Martin del Campo in his best contrived Castillian accent. The leader introduces herself as Madam Marlene.

Juan and Regina argue over whether she is a Santa or not. she orders him out of her cabin. He says he will go if she will stop yelling . He taunts and teases and laughs all the way out the door after grabbing a quick kiss of the hand. He laughs all around the hall.

Madeline flirts with Federico but applies the big fan when Rodrigo’s voice booms out that he is here with his daughters to walk the deck but one is always late. Federico walks off with Aimee.

Jimena is in the bedroom with Regina and Jimena tries to tell her fortune by reading her hand again. Jimena picks up the book Madame Bovery and asks Regina to read it to her, enchanted with the lyrical words.

Madeline eyes from behind her fan, Rodrigo trying not to really meet his eyes but he is certainly aware of her bevy of beauties.

Back at the beach hut, Rosenda is torturing her dying father, insisting that he needs to tell her the secret of Leonarda. He gasps out the few details of the humble fisherman with whom her sister had a child. . .

Leonarda looks at the locket with Rodrigo’s picture in it that hangs around her neck.

Rosenda tries to pry the name of the fisherman out of the dead blue lips of Celestino. After her Papa stops breathing, she decides no one knows this fisherman story and she can use it as an uncomfortable fact for Leonarda. She rudely bumps the swinging hammock of her dead father as she rises to make her plans.

Renato and Papa Noel meet in a restaurant. Noel says you know your mother and I cannot live together. . Dad thinks he would be better off in California but Renato wants his councils and advice and presence to learn from. Long suffering Noel receives this only show of love in his life with grace and . They talk about the girls retuning and Noel suggests he is glad Renato is coming and maybe is interested in her but he says no no but she is my best best friend ever. Oh, oh, poor old Santa Regina.

The gypsy deck has Jimena’s step-auntie, Griselda and the bald knife carrying wild eyed one, I think this is Servando, although I can’t think who is is likely to serve using his large knife like a toothpick.

Aimee returns to the suite with Fed the fop looking for Regina who is not there so they decide not to stay alone .

Leonarda says she is sorry for the loss of Rosenda’s father but did he confess something to Rosenda before dying . No no nothing but years ago I knew of your sister’s tale. . .

Juan has flash backs with his father and after of the swearing to avenge the dreadful treatment of his parents by the evil Rodrigo.

He sees FobFed and Aimee on the deck she pretends she do ‘t know him but Juan reminds her that he has known her father for years . She blushes, Federico looks out trumped and off balance. as we go to commercials.

***
Aimee says the exchanged some words. and Juan says we exchanged more than words. They leave Jimena drops down on Juan and who tries to stop her. Regina comes to the rescue. JUan grabs her

Leonarda dance the who knows what circle dance . Leonarda demands her fidelity for certain privileges but Renato interrupts with the news that his father will return.

Juan continues to taunt Regina who resists . Juan notes that the two girls could not be more different.

The daughter of Celestino the cochero Renato and Papa Noel give condolences . Leonarda announces her protection of Rosenda. Arcadio is at the door says a . They yell about Arcadio.

Back on the boat, Aimee tells her father, this unknown man approached her when she was feeling so bad but she went right to her room. Regina helps her sister and says we have been tied up for so many years with out social opportunities we are so in-experience. Fed tells that Juan approached her with so much Inappropriate confidentiality. Regina tries to intervene. but Federico assures Rodrigo that he is the appropriate gentleman to protect these innocent vulnerable girls on board. So he secures the contract from the to be their escort.

Leonarda rubs jewelry on Arcadio’s cheek, what do you want to buy from me now he snarls apparently the feel of jewels turns him on. She tells him that Rodrigo is coming home. Arcadio is not pleased, he has liked his power base up to now with the absent Rodrigo and Noel. Leonarda is worried that Renato’s humanistic management style will lead to trouble for bad boy Arcadio.

Rodrigo tells Aimee she can go with Federico while he looks across the room with more interest . He approaches Madeline and says he is sure he knows her. She assures him he is wrong.

Back at the Finca Leonarda offers the jewels to Arcadio who says the only thing he desires is her.

Renato asks Rosenda to go find his mother so he and Papa Noel can continue their talk with Mommie dearest . Rosenda goes looking with a candle for scandal and sees Leonarda and Arcadio in grimy embrace. She looks as offended as I feel but satisfied to have more ammunition for later.

**
Regina decides to use Federico the fop to carry, position and reposition the camera half a dozen times. She decides to take pictures of the bevy of senoritas. Madeline is afraid and would rather leave the girlies alone with Federico to take a lovely picture. He thought words about making her his wife in spite of driving him crazy. the money will be worth it.

Rosenda is lucky to have found the money pit of knowledge with Leonarda and can’t wait to improve her position.

Federico take a swig from his silver hip flask in exasperation, as he momentarily hides from Regina. Aimee shows up in the half-mast lavender dress in contrast with the virgin white lace that Regina wears up to and including her neck Regina is surprised that she has has gotten away form her punishment with Papa. Aimee insists she used her best enchantments on big Papa. Aimee defends her passionate nature and her need to live in danger. In contrast, to you who are a Saint, Aimee sings a hallelujah chorus as saunters off giggling provocatively all the way.

juan things about the sisters and the rejections He finds Aimee and gives her a big wet kiss again . She protests only after the hot kiss and he says who will come to help her. She admits to thinking of him and . Juan would like to talk to her father to make sure she can be his. He wants to tell her father that they are going to marry as soon as possible. Not the kind of danger she had in mind obviously.

**

Juan says lets go talk to your father. No we cannot make him accept this immediately. . Aimee says her father expects formal comportment and manners . She accuses Juan of being jealous of seeing her on the arm of Federico the fop. He presses for going to the father again and she continues to insist this in not the right moment. He picks her up and with delight she protests, let’s not be precipitous. and He teases that he really wants to see her father to tell her of his intentions. I can be the devil but it is all the fire that I need to live. they kiss and promise to meet later in the dark. Juan is apparently that naive that his Aimee will be his.

Rosenda insinuates to Leonarda that she couldn't find Leo when she must have been off talking with Arcadio. Renato offers his hand and says to his mom that Rosenda is so sad for the death of her father she should sit with us tonight. And Leo acts like that is a capital idea and Rosenda quickly joins the table.

Jimena is trying to read the Madame Bovary book on the stairs sounding out the difficult words, when Juan grabs her asking what she is trying to do on this . She tries to read his hand and runs off after grabbing the book.

Renato reminds his parents that he remembers the night a youngster named Juan came home with Papa almost drowned but what ever happened to him. Leo swears she doesn’t know what happened to this useless beggar . But Noel says he had money and some food and then suddenly disappeared completely.

**

Last scenes: Juan and Gabriel work on papers He tells Gabriel he is really young and needs to enjoy himself. Gabriel says you are also worried about business. He has his reasons for returning to Mexico which Gabriel will learn in good time. He does tell him that his main mission is to ruin Rodriogo Montes de la Oca.

Said Rodrigo is admonishing Regina that she better get ready to marry someone like Fop man. Aimee teases that she should like Federico, he has the air of such good family. Rodrigo warms to this theme that Federico has a good family name, he is educated. and socially acceptable. Regina presses that she has always dreamed of marrying for love. but doesn’t say who, silly girl.

Juan continues to press for vengeance in his cabin while Rodrigo with the girls says name and prestige are all that count while love has already died. Regina says who are you talking about, who was this love? Looks like most of the subplots are set to roll and now

Next time: I know passion , swoons Aimee. Juan comes into the bedroom and looks like a first class hot night is at hand (it’s about time)... Looks like you got the hot scene straw, Connie.

Thanks, Cheryl for the funny recap. So nice to "see" you again after MEPS.

I am trying to look for something nice to say about tonight's episode. Let's see, Roderigo's diction is excellent. Rosenda, the bad maid who is the daughter of Hammock-man looks like pretty serious trouble for everyone. Papa Noel's big hair gave him a bit of a look of Leon Trotsky, no? And where o where did they find all of that rare polyester fabric with which to make the ladies' outfits?

As you have all written before, here in CSland the anachronisms abound but the recaps are precious.

Tonight's horrible special effects-ocean was almost mesmerizing if you watched it carefully. It might present real possibilities an object of contemplation after a couple of tequila shots.

My only real question about the episode is; did the prissy woman—Leonarda?—who is waiting for Don Roderigo to return, have sex with that slime-wad with the disheveled bad wig? EWWW and mega-ewwww.I have heard of liking your men dirty and bad but that might be taking things a bit far.

Iron Elna O'Velvet

Can I ask you ladies a dumb question? Maybe i'm not the brightest lightbulb out here but what is the fixation with Pirates? Did it begin with Pasion? Or is it influenced by Pirates of the Carribean?

Does Juan become a pirate or a privateer here in Corazon Salvaje? I have not seen any indication of such. There would also be no need because he is now wealthy and is only preoccupied with revenge against the Montes De Oca Family. When I browsed through the Alborada recaps, there were no references about pirates in that period.

Sorry if I spoiled your fun.

Ibarramedia

I have a question and maybe Jarocha can answer it. If Salvador Mejia is so powerful in Televisa, Why the heck can't he get more sophisticated special effects? The ship with the very obvious fake ocean drove me nuts tonight. Can't he use his power and influence to get better stuff? Carla Estrada probably had a bigger operating budget.

Ibarramedia

Oh my. Is that "Emiliano" from ENDA in the long curly wig playing some sort of messenger?

Mildred
Kansas

Hot time tonight.. Let's get rolling.
The slime ball with the bad graying wig looks like a bad Johnny Cash impersonator.
Thank you for the recap.

"Candle for scandal"--OMG, Cheryl, that was hilarious! Excellent recap of a craptastic episode. I'm afraid my beanie will need some serious tune-ups as we sail along the seas. Who knows what the beanie will require when we get to shore?

I've recruited my daughter to watch with me. She's speechless.

WTF is going on with Regina's camera? Are we witnessing the early days of paparazzi & soon, Leona's penchant for doin' the dirty with the dirty will be splashed across the front page of the daily news when Regina slips in, sets up, & snaps a few incriminating pictures?

Iron Elna: Leon Trotsky! Ha! I was thinking Beethoven after a rough day of composing.

Juan is a jerk. He acts like a total a$$ when he's with Santa R. & he can barely keep it in his pants with Sluta A.

Ibarramedia: I'm not fixated on pirates (I'm a history nut so the romantic notions of castles & pirates are creative devices, not based in reality...the filth alone would nauseate most) but Pasion was a terrific romp, made all the better with FC as a swashbuckler. It's all in fun! (IMHO, any way)

Maggarita
:->

Ibarramedia, I think the fixation with pirates was ignited by Pasion, probably by sparked somewhate by Pirates of the Carribean. Who can deny the influence of bad boy, bare chested Johnny Dep? The previews of sweaty chested, hunk-infested Pasion, got womankind all hot and bothered. That said, show us anything even remotely related to swashbuckling, say a row boat or a beach, and we go wild. What can I say?

Thanks for the great recap CherylNewMex. I hope I can do tonight's steamy love scene justice.

Boy, that Aimee is certainly a little ho. I wonder if she will get pregnant? Wow, the excrement would hit the fan for sure.

That Rosenda is a piece of work. Just like her mom.

So has Johnny Cash and Leo done the deed yet? I'm unclear on that.

Why were the "ladies" sitting in the sun with no parasol? I would have been fried to a crisp.

Is it over directing, overacting, Juan's cackle is over the top along with Aimee's coquettishness.
How many episodes is this forgettable epic? I don't think the word subtle (sutil) is in Mejia's vocabulary.
Oh well, I have Amor Real & FC at 4:00.
And the recaps are great.

Cheryl: Thanks for recap.

Elna June: I couldn't find anything good about last night's episode. It was just plain Boring.

I'm also afraid we are going to see way too much of Aimee in this novela. I just want to Fast Forward every scene with her in it.

This is the first time I've seen Elizabeth Guitierrez, la mujer of our heartthrob, William Levy, in anything. She looks tall, willowy and Latin Barbieish, that is, like a Barbie doll, with a nose that has been overdone. But, the acting isn't too bad.

So what else could I say about the person who took William away from us.

It's 103 episodes, ¡¡¡¡ayudame!!!!!
¡¡¡¡auxilio!!!!
Wonder if there is any chance they could chg time slots with sth tolerable?

Welcome Mildred! What part of Kansas are you from?

Variopinta:
"How many episodes is this forgettable epic?"

135. At least. (It's going to end on 16 of April.)

I think Elizabeth Gutierrez does an great job in this novela. I fell in love with her and her character - platonically, of course. :)

Yes, it seems Elizabeth and Cristian de La Fuente are the only ones disobeying the director's instructions to overact. Keep up the good fight Elizabeth and Cristian! We're with you!

Do they ever cancel a telenovela? Last night's epidsode wasn't even funny. BORING as someone has already said. There's NOTHING endearing about these characters, and I've already had enough Juan/Aimee pawing scenes to last the novela. I can't imagine there will be anything hot about a love scene between the two of them. Of course there's always Leonarda and Johnny Cash .. now there's hot, NOT.

Lola

Thanks Cheryl. I thought I would give the show about a week and read the great recaps here to see if I would actually tune in. So I had the time last night and thought I'd give it a try. All I can say is OMG! Our kids at the high school here do a better job of acting.
Everything about this TN is over the top - costumes, acting, plot. It would be fun if they did it a little more tongue in cheek, but the only adjective that comes to mind after watching is "cheap". I may try a couple more episodes, and I like Christian, but I don't know if I could sit through 130 episodes of this thing.
I put my hopes back to Mi Pecado to fill my ENDA/Sorti losses.

Is this novela still running in Mex.? I got 103 episodes on the televisa site but maybe that's the episode they are showing in Mex.

Variopinta:
Yes, it's still running in Mexico.

I don't even know the end date - Esmas says that La duena de tu amor starts on 19 April, but a few weeks ago there was a rumor that La duena needs more time + the ratings got better so CS's going to be extended to 150 episodes.

On the other hand, in this week's episodes the narrator always warns the viewers "no te pierdas las últimas semanas de tu telenovela".
So I guess it means 135 episodes.

Cheryl,
It's wonderful having you back. You haven't lost your touch. You captured the hilarity of this raucous romp perfectly. The boat on the ocean was too perfect. I honestly don't think the creator of this has any intention of us taking this seriously.

The years have not been kind to Arcadio.

Carlos

Pasofino,
May I respectfully disagree? I don't think we could ever see too much of Aimee.

Carlos

Carlos, you haven't changed a bit! LOL!

Carlos: I hope you mean naked, because that's what it would take to get me to pay any attention to her. And, of course, that would just be out of idle curiosity.

Variopinta how much more of this forgettable epic ROFL i read that it was extended too oh the horror.

Jarocha said it improved when the original director left to direct on the set of La Duena so we just might see some overacting on that show too.

Elizabeth Guiterrez had a good novela on at Telemundo last year call El Rostro de Analia she is a very good actress.

I don't think they cancel novela like that anymore on Univision on Telemudo they will cut a novela short or move it into the afternoon no matter even if it has big stars in it.

Lately that hasn't been Univision policy so we are stuck with another fabulous Mejia masterpiece.

Thanks to all you early risers who could see the zany aspects of this episode. When you are the recapper, it is hard to see the funny fake ocean movement and other details trying to get the vocabulary through the iintensely loud background sound tracks. Elna June, I am still rolling in giggles about seeing Leon Trotsky from now on when Noel is on the screen. I am a Noel fan since he seems to be the only truly kind person but I fear he is slated for being the butt of Leonarda's and many readers' snark.

I think the Pirate fever just has so much fun in store but what happens when the ship finally bumps into the dock at Vera Cruz? I will miss the pirate costumes personally along with the close atmosphere of the cabin and deck scenes.

Oh, and Arcadio as Johnnie Cash is so perfect. This gang really has got game today! Making fun out of a dismal scrilpt and character undevelopment. Oh well, as we have seen before, bad scripts and dreadful acting can be fun to rip apart.

Carlos, I finally picked up a paperback copy of 2666 this week so it looks like a many months long project. The print is so small I will need to read it in real daylight only.

When I was in Oaxaca in December Salvaje was in a post boat ride phase with all the characters we met this week plying their trade for all they are worth. I love Eduardo and Fernando whether they are in good plays or not. I notice though that Jamie Camel seems to only be in better stories or at least funny ones. This one could use more obvious humor.

OH, and I forgot to wish Fernando Colunga happy birthday on March 3. I have it in my iCal to remind me every year. He ws born in 1966.

According to IMDB, Eduardo Yañez will be 50 on September 25! I think he looks totally fit in this although it is a stretch to believe he is a 20 something as Juan. The age inappropriatemess of so many characters continues to be so silly here although now Leonarda and even Rosario look more appropriate as does Rodrigo.

How many fans will Aimee chew through on this TN? Maggarita, I agree. Juan is a bit of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde isn't her? I'm guessing Leo did the dirty deed with Arcadio. He didn't seem in the mood to settle for anything less. Now Leo's got cooties. For real.

How is the gypsy girl supposed to sneak around with all the jingling her costume makes? They may as well put a cowbell on her (this TN needs more cowbell!!!)

Gracias for the recap, Cheryl! :)

I got parts of the episode last night, and Maggarita ITA Juan is an abnoxious jerk. What kinda galan is he? And he's eventually supposed to end up with Regina or stay with Aimee?

Btw, I saw a book of CS at a library the other day. It is based on the 1993 novela, I think. Just caught my attention so I thought share. :)

LOL, Pasofino everytime I see Elizabeth Gutierrez I start burning with envy too! Won't lie, she is pretty, but why oh why does she have to be with William.

Ibarramedia, I'm not too into pirates besides the fabulous Johnny Depp. To be attractive in that attire, that was brilliant.

Daisy, I'll be joining you on Monday with high hopes for Mi Pecado. Hope it's not a let down.

Hey there, Elna! I feel like I haven't said anything to you in awhile. How's it going?

Variopinta, rotfl counting down already?!

Oh my god! ROTFL! Now I will have Christopher Walken in my head all day. We need more cow bell!!!!

To Melissa, I zapped your comment off the page. Please remember we do not indulge in malice toward the real person on this blog, per orders and rules of Mama Fiddler.

But please don't go away mad, we want your input in general. Thanks gang!

Ooops, sorry! I'm not mad - I feel bad now that I did that.

Cielo de Levy i'll be joining you and Daisynjay to check out Mi Pecado which will be Maite Perroni's new novela. MY ENDA is ending on Sunadya three hours first hour a repeat of Fridays episode.

I don't know if you get Telemundo but if you do maybe you should check out Perro Amor it's starting to get really good. They have the cutest dog on it called Onyx, what can i say i'm a sucker for dogs.

Melissa, thanks for being a good sport. No harm done.

Juan is being a psychologist's dream with his bag of suppressed and not so suppressed and definitely unresolved neuroses. But this character has had such a rough life already. I don't see any smooth sailing for him anytime soon either on the high seas or in port. Hope they don't crash into the dock in Veracruz.

Great recap, Cheryl!

Juan is really a doofus, he has this revenge agenda, and the first loose woman he meets, he wants to marry her?

Not only were the boat special effects distracting (it looked as if they shot this on a stage, filled in the ocean, and moved the camera up and down), but what about the twins' special effect? Over and over, they show Aimee's face and Regina's (double's) hair from the back. Or vice versa. So they have to shoot every scene twice, and splice in the dialog. Once in a while they show both in the front, which is harder to do, with a split screen, so they can only do it for a second or two. Obviously, they can never show the two close together with both faces. The actress playing both is doing a pretty good job, but to me, this constant showing of one of them from behind makes the acting feel stilted.

I don't think Leonarda really likes Arcadio, but he has a lot on her, and she's grudgingly allowed him to have his way a few times.

But Aimee is HOT! I love how her charms overflow, her eyes, her lips, who cares if she's bad? In fact, one of the best things about these period novelas (for the guys) is the "escote".

Oh the lure of telenovelas. I want to check out Mi Pecado too and the Telemundo stories have generally been of such high quality, alas! I am such a sucker for them already and I constantly hear of new ones but I am already watching 5 so I feel like a slave in telenovelalandia. And Carlos has persuaded me to read R. Bolano's opus 2666. I will barely have time to walk Willa down by the Rio Grande and frankly my pool lessons aren't going so well either! Now if I could only hook another TV set up near the pool table, I could practice during commercials or slow parts of the story.

Lol, Cheryl...there sure were some twisted corsets last night :)

I was surprised that Aimee isn't opposed to the idea of getting married, just doesn't want to make daddy angry on the ship. I suppose back in Mexico it will be easier to run off. I'm inclined not to like her, since it seems to me like she's offering up her sister so that she doesn't have to get stuck with Fed.

Ibarra: if you're wondering why we went for the pirate theme again when there don't appear to be any actual pirates in this tn, then I offer that (a) there's a boat on the ocean and multiple shots of men in puffy shirts, some with head scarves and (b) it's fun :)

Cielo:

Great to hear from you too. I have been trying to ride the high seas on CS, but I suffer from severe motion-sicknesses, which combined with the bad acting and time-costume-ship-and-hair-color-anachronisms have left my fingers paralyzed.

I am, most of the time, truly rendered speechless by this telenovela.I may suggest it as a possible aid to other meditation teachers who are looking for ways to shock their students into moments of silence. It has sure worked for me!

Glad to see you surviving your Levy withdrawals. Hope school is going well for you as well.

I am surprised to actually see Elizabeth—seems an odd pairing with our Handsome Billy, for sure.

Un abrazo de tu amiga,

Iron Elna O'Velvet

Maggarita:

I, too, am a history geek—go History Channel! My favorite junk-reading is always historical fiction (not romantic historical fiction). ROTFL at the image of Papa Noel as Beethoven on a rough composing day.

I have one more hope: maybe Emiliano from ENDA will stop his constant whinging now that he has a dashing curly wig to wear every day.

Cheryl: Welcome Back! You haven't missed a beat - a wonderful recap and very witty title.

The comments have been great.

My love of pirates started with Pasion. That is still my favorite telenova.

I'm sitting back and enjoying the cruise. I think you said it perfectly. I love EY and FC no matter what they're in too! This is campy and it's nice not to have to take this too seriously. Mi Pecado looks great but dark and as brooding as ENDA is. That's enough angst for one night. I'll be watching both.

Diana

Elna June you're already rendered speechless i hate to see how you'll react when you get further into the story ROFL from your descriptions.

There is a new telenovela starting at 9:00 on Monday on Telemundo. It's called "Donde Esta Elisa?" It's about a teenage girl who disappears, and in the search for her everyone's secrets get exposed. It has a good cast and sounds interesting.

OT, if I may. I don't know how many Jaime Camil fans hang out on the CS board. He got Twitter about a month ago, and he's like a kid with a new toy (Camil? Acting like a kid? No puede serrrr!). It's fun watching him have so much fun.

You don't have to join Twitter to see his page. Check it out (click here).

Cheryl, thanks for the recap. It makes me happy when the recapper confirms what I thought I heard.

Good thing about this episode? I liked all the fluttering fans as the ladies drifted about the deck. The use of fans was always supposed to be a big Spanish thing, so nice to see this charming custom put to work.

Hubby was calling scuzzy bad guy Johnny Cash as well. I squealed with glee when the evil gypsy man appeared. It's our old buddy Lopez from La Fea. He also played bad guys in Mariana De La Noche and other TNs as well.

Ibarra and your question about the attraction of pirates? Waylon Jennings put it this way: "Ladies love outlaws." I also think there's an influence from novels and movies in the 20th century: Captain Blood, Treasure Island, Errol Flynn, other swashbuckler works. Before our action movies got so high-tech, life on the high seas was an attractive venue for adventure and danger.
Queen Elizabeth I had her sea dogs, privateers like Drake, Raleigh, etc. All the gold and other treasure being shipped from New Spain over to the Spanish Crown was a temptation too hard to resist, so again, lots of adventure there. (I believe pirates were free-lance guys, while privateers had a license to plunder from a government. Y'all correct me if I'm wrong.)

The Pirates of the Carribean series brought the old swashbucklers up to date and created an attractive image for a new audience. We know the reality had to be grimy and harsh, but the image of power, freedom, gold and rum continues to create a romantic fantasy lifestyle.
La Paloma

I'm gathering that this telenovela was set in the 1870's. I think this was long past the glory days of the Caribbean pirates when it was almost legal due to the competition between England and Spain. Of course there are still pirates as we know from Somalia.

So far, I find this telenovela very boring.

Lynne

Vivi in DC, so glad you picked up on the Christopher Walken! That skit and "The Continental" (would you like some fine cham-pan-ya?) were my favorite skits he ever did on SNL.

Elna June: if you like historical fiction, try Anya Seton's "Katherine" & "The Winthrop Woman." Well written & her research is top-notch. "Katherine" is responsible for my obsession with medieval English history.

Anon 2:03: you've got it right with the pirates & privateers and Lynne, you're right with the timeline. But if our lovely ladies are wearing polyester & our hero will soon be sporting a do-rag, who are we to quibble with historic inaccuracies?

Maggarita
:-P

Maggie and Elna, glad to know you 2 are also history buffs like me. :)

Kat,La Paloma and Cheryl I understand now. Carry on. Hombre, there were one or two times that Aimee and Regina were side by side, not one after the other. Regina when she was on the right side had a slight imprint or halo around her image. Almost like a light ghosting. You really have to concentrate to see it. I like Rosenda, She's a hot young babe. I noticed she had that stupid earpiece partially hidden by her Princess leia-esque croissants.

I know Carla Estrada was careful not to use that on her period stuff, at least the chopped up dvds did not show it.

They should have used cotton or silk in lieu of polyester which I think was invented in 1941. Good eye ladies. I did not notice that.

To those of you who like military history or pictures in general, I'm linking a site that is graphic and video heavy. A lot of very nice pics, some pretty 'gruesome ' videos. Your mileage may vary. It has Military and some police from Albania to Zimbabwe.

Ibarramedia

Ibarramedia, I have loved pirates all the way back to Tyrone Powers and Errol Flynn (my favorite). They are sexy, exciting, dangerous, but then, in the movies they always have a wonderful heart. I'm sure real priates were filthy brutes. Movie pirates are smoke'n hot!

I'm reposting the timeline Jarocha and I did yesterday since some people are asking questions.... I said yesterday i was going to combine it into one cohesive timeline, but I'm feeling lazy today. Too much work to do.

Aribeth: The story started on 1850 and Maria del Rosario's grave said she died in 1851, therefore we are clear that Juan was born in 1851. Benito Juárez died in 1872, that's why I said at the most Juan must be 21. If he was 8 when the twins were born and they were... say 18 now, then they would be in 1877 and that's already the begining of the Porfiriato (Porfirio Díaz's time on the presidency chair) with Juárez being already dead for 5 years. During this time (1876-1880) Diaz had troops on Veracruz to stop any revolution attempt (which did happen on june 1879).

Not only did Rodrigo read a paper about Benito Juárez doing stuff in the presidency but I doubt any rich man of the time would have gone to settle with his daughters in Veracruz during a time were there was so much tension and fear of a new war. It makes more sense that he went during Juárez's presidency, when the country was much more stable and Juárez had invested alot in Veracruz. Mexico would only be stable again until mid 1880's once Díaz had managed to control it completely.

Of course, there's not much sense needed for this novela.

I spotted Doña Barbara in the bookstore & thought to myself, how difficult could it be, they made it into a telenovela. WRONG, I can't get past page one, where did all those words come from, I never saw them before.

That's the answer!!! Take dramamine before watching this classic.

¡¡arrgh!!

Cheryl, thanks for the recap. My head is spinning; I'm not sure I'm getting all the ins'n'outs of this plot. You get a gold star for following so closely and writing it up so accurately. And to all those who have put brain energy into figuring out the timelines & relationships, gracias! The only history I noticed was the mention of Maximiliano y Carlota about 3 episodes ago, which would have been just pre-Juarez. As for the genu-ine polyester, it only adds to the comic book quality of the whole production. I really don't think ladies wore that kind of decolleté in daytime and certainly not outside the company of a chaperone.

I've given up hope that this will get better, but I'm hanging in there; it's my hour on the rowing machine and distracts me from the even deadlier bore of exercising.

I loved Christopher Walken as The continental on SNL what a scream.

Cielo de Levy:

"Btw, I saw a book of CS at a library the other day. It is based on the 1993 novela, I think."

No, the 1992 version is based (loosely) on the book. It was written by Caridad Bravo Adams and it was published in 1956. The story was adapted 5 times in Mexico: 2 movies and 3 telenovelas were made.

Thanks, Cheryl , for your excellent, as always, recap. It's so nice to have you back in the family. Diana~~I'm with you. I am just riding the waves and enjoying the costumes , furniture, and Big Ed and suspending my disbelief. As for the pirate thing, I am with those who mentionned Errol Flynn and those old films about romantic pirates and fair ladies. Johnny Depp does not do it for me, but I do enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World and have to go on it every time we're there. I used to read romantic historical fiction. I love Anya Seton. Beatrice Small is good and racy. I also liked Kathleen Woodiwiss and Julie Garwood. Now, I don't have much time to read novels since I began to watch the novelas a few years ago. I watch Zorro once in awhile at 1.oo pm [Osvaldo Rios is muy hot as Zorro's dad.] I also try to watch Amor Real at 4.00.

Thanks Cheryl and welcome back. I haven't watched the episode yet, but your recap will help me understand it better. I do have one question about Federicos nick name "Fop". What does that mean? Forgive me if I'm overlooking the obvious.

Elna, I am living off of youtube videos, magazine articles, and interviews of WL for the time being. Great to hear from you. :)

Aribeth, thanks. I was wondering whether it was the other way around, but got confused cause it said something about the novela on the book. :)

fop is a dandy, vain

Thanks for telling Joanne what fop means Variopinta, I was out all evening. I think I must have read too many English novels in getting degrees in English Lit, and a lifetime of enjoying the literature. Fop is a very handy word to describe guys like Federico in just three letters. Good night all.

Cheryl: Great recap. Lots of terrific snark! Sorry I'm late, but it was great! Thanks!
