Dinero Monday June 14, 2010 Are We Having Fun Yet?

Well, here we are, trudging through another evening in the Slough of Despond. Pajarito Vicky is still playing the dying swan. Brothers are dying of hunger. Dad dying with worry. And finally the family is thinking a marriage between Rafa and long-suffering Vicky is the answer. Not the romance we're hoping for, right? Nor is the romance between Tia Rosario and Quintana the answer. But that's cooking along right nicely this evening.

Here's how the episode went tonight. Rafa arrives home from his obligatory house call at Vicky's to lament how Vicky's family pressured him into promises he didn't want to make (and Vicky into kisses he didn't want to give). Jaime nervously champions Vicky's cause and even Julieta and Leonor finally conclude that Vicky is the lesser of two evils, particularly if Papa Gaston follows through with his promises to control her stalking phone calls and visits to the office.

Following this, we have twin scenes of Rafa and Alejandra waking up depressed and weary. Looking at the phone. Waiting for a call. Getting a call but Rafa hangs up before she answers. Both drag themselves out of bed with hardly enough energy to get to work.

Alejandra perks up momentarily when Tia Rosario confides that Quintana asked her to be his novia and go with him to a party that evening. Alejandra is immediately on board, happy that someone's love life is going well (or so she thinks). She counsels Rosario to pay no attention to her brother's worries. She has the privilege of loving a man who really cares for her. That doesn't happen every day so don't blow your chances. Off the two trot to Rosario's room to look over outfits. Alejandra wants Auntie to wear a plunging neckline black top she gave her, as well as a little skirt to show off her pretty legs. Tia is hesitant. We'll see where this goes.

Meanwhile Jorge has found the love note Rosario dropped and is aware that a romance is afoot. We'll see how that goes also!

Now to work. Alejandra arrives and has a little heart to heart with Susana. Confides that she didn't sleep a wink last night. Her family is thick as thieves with Marcos and indignant about Rafa. Wanted him to leave Auto Siglo but of course that's impossible. He has to keep working to repay her. So she'll quit. Susana reminds her that the last time she tried to quit no one else would hire her.

Rafa arrives. Gloomy "buenos dias". Alejandra snaps that she wants Susana to get the carpenter back to put up a door since she doesn't want to share space with that man. Or even talk to him. All communication must be passed through Susana. Oh my, it's all so high school romance isn't it?

And speaking of sophomoric...we have another random corrupt cop scene. The bozos are trying to hit up Marian Celeste for a bribe (mordida) because she lacks a licence plate (it fell off a few blocks back). Marian doesn't bite and assures them they're not getting a peso out of her. And they don't.

Rafa finally arrives at the sales floor, startling Pepeto with his old garish tie and signature early days white socks. Seems he's trying to get his former vibe back and we have a nice retrospective of his lingerie hawking days. Ladies, if your hubby doesn't just jump off the bed when he sees this, you'll get your money back! he promises, waving a lacy bustier around in his hands. Pepeto assures him he's the same guy he ever was....a good friend, a fellow who loves his family. But Rafa knows different. He's lost Alejandra....and he wants her back.

We switch to another buddy scene: Marcos and Chavez. The latte wants to know how things are going with Alejandra. Well, she's very affected by the swindle and losing Rafa but Marcos is sure they acted just in time. If not, he would have lost Ale forever. But he's sticking like glue now, and eventually she'll be his. (Let's hope he's wrong, wrong, wrong.)

Back at Auro Siglo, finally the junta begins and Alejandra's in a foul mood with most of the staff. However the General's sales have been good. Ditto for Bebe and Dandy. Jose Tomas (Pepeto) comes in for a drubbing however. He excuses his poor performance on first month blues and promises to do better next month. May God hear you but I don't think He's listening snaps Ale. Another poor performer was Ramirez who blames it on the beating he got. But what about all those other months of poor performances? asks Ale. Has he been mugged every month of the year?

And up jumps our separated socialite Rosaura, championing the cause of the poor. You're the "mosca en la sopa" (fly in the soup) of this department retorts Ale. You haven't made one single sale this month. Rosaura's plea is that separated folks, or those suffering heartaches, should have the same 40 days grace period as women who've just given birth. Another argument that doesn't fly, but it does give everyone the chance to point out that certain people have canceled meetings and been in bitchy moods ever since their love life went sour, so why not grant that same slack to the sales force? The incipient revolt is quashed by the arrival of Señor Beltran.

He wants the sales figures for the month. And Ale indicates that Rafa should be the one to give them. He's as positive and encouraging as Ale was sarcastic and downbeat. He affirms the good work of the sales force, gives the numbers for the sales off the floor (not good enough, gasps Beltran) but indeed it is, because together with the institutional sales, Auto Siglo has more than made it's quota for the month. Beltran is ecstatic to learn Rafa has closed the Celeste deal. Applause all around from the staff. Rafa points out that a significant part of the institutional sales were thanks to Ale and Carbones de Norte. Insignificant applause. Ale's not winning any contests here.

And neither is Marino. Although he tried to get hold of the monthly prize earlier (a watch), practically wresting it out of the hands of Susana, it seems the fellow with the highest sales figures was none other than Dandy. So he gets the watch. And Rafa, with his big institutional sale, gets a fancy new telephone, more appropriate for the fine executive he now is. No problem programming in the old phone numbers....just change the chip. It's what's inside that counts, explains Beltran.

Best part of the evening was the long shot of Dandy's surprised but ecstatic face when he learns he's the month's winner. And there we end.

Previews:
Ale hands in a letter of resignation again.
Rafa vows not to let her quit.

Vocabulary:
Me costó un trabajo arreglarme = I had trouble even getting dressed (Alejandra dragging into the day)
Como me veo? = How do I look?
una persona que no es la indicada = not the right person (Ale talking about Rafa)
mujeriego = womanizer (Quintana)

mordida = bribe , (also can mean bite)
hacer cola = wait in line
que gacha es la gente, de veras = really, people can be so nasty (cop complaining about Marian Celeste's treatment of their bribe attempt)
Dios te oiga = May God hear you
feroz paliza = terrible beating (Ramirez' excuse)
siete y pico = just a little after 7....Ramiro's excuse for trying to get his late sale credited
asi se habla compañera = now you're talking comrade (General affirming Rosaura's confrontation with Ale
escote = neckline (usually plunging or cut very deep...at least on Univision)
cohecho, soborno = also words for" bribe

Dicho of the Day

Camarón que se duerme, se lo lleva la corriente (lit. a sleep shrimp is carried away by the current) (fig. You've got to keep on your toes.) And looks like Rafa IS keeping on his toes. He closed the Celeste deal. He hasn't married Vicky yet. And he hasn't lost Ale. Not really. Hang in there Rafa!

"The slough of despond", Judy that was just the beginning of another great recap, ending with your great vocabulary lesson. Thank you so much.

There were some cute little moments tonight but we are still not out of the wooods. I did enjoy Susana with Trapito. Those two are cute together. He has such a crush on her and she treats him with such kindness and fondness. And Dandy's face was priceless.

We haven't seen the cops in a while. Still don't quite get their little scenes. I tuned them out Judy, so thanks for explaining it.

Judy, thanks for a speedy, entertaining recap. Your vocabulary was exceptionally good this episode (which means there is a lot I didn't get until you explained it to me!).

This episode seemed a little slow after our events of last week. Maybe we need a little breather while they set up our next rollercaster ride.

Susana or Dandy alone but especially together are so fun to watch. Just wish we could see more of them. I was so glad that Marian didn't take any crap from those cops. I haven't missed them one bit.

Flashbacks to Rafa at the beginning showed us how much shorter his hair was. Wonder why he hasn't cut it for so long. Ale has had a lot of short skirts before, but the hemline on this dress was really distracting! Kept waiting to see if we would have a wardrobe malfunction. If Ale had reached above her head for something, oh my.

Good Morning Pata and Barbara. I was in the Slough of Despond myself last night. Felt like my brain was filled with sludge (very hot and humid here and the back porch where we have "my" TV and the computer is not air-conditioned. Combination of teaching class in a non-air-conditioned gym and then wading through Dinero was a real trudge.

Thanks Pata, for explaining that Trapito has a crush on Susana. Well, who wouldn't? She really is charming.

Barbara, risky hemlines and plunging necklines (escotes) seem to be a staple of Univision. I remember when I first started watching (to learn Spanish) I was startled by the tight clothing, cleavage and industrial strength eye makeup on even the news anchors! yikes...not exactly Connie Chung in pearls.

I DID enjoy Marian Celeste firm handling of the cops. Clearly she's an intelligent, assertive woman, in addition to being gorgeous.

Judy: I am sorry that it was so hot and uncomfortable for you yesterday, but your marvelous recap was not at all encumbered by the heat! Wonderful and witty. Like the romances "cooking along right nicely", your recap simmered and stewed perfectly. The vocabulary and dicho were stellar.

I have to echo Pata's cheering of "the slough of despond". What a wonderful line! I laughed at the title which by all accounts has not yet occurred (at least for Ale and Rafa). Enjoyed your nod to high school romance and "sophomoric".

Pedro Fernandez had a special this past weekend. I watched a little of it and he really does have a beautiful voice. I think he and Ale have good chemistry but it appears it will be a while before they reconnect.

Diana

I agree with Diana. Judy, your recap was as sharp and witty as ever despite your weather. Wow. Teaching in that weather without air conditioning must add to the challenge of the class.

Guess I haven't seen enough telenovelas. I am almost used to the plunging necklines (though Claudia's breasts seem to grow weekly despite Ale's talk with her) and I don't even notice the "industrial strength eye makeup" (LOL) anymore. Ale's short dress was really short. Someone once mentioned that they thought the director or wardrobe person was a "leg man". I think that may be true. And Ale does have the legs to pull off the shortest of skirts.

P.S. " Escote" is a new word for me as well. Thanks!

Hi Barb and Diana. Yep, I'm pretty sure the director is a leg man. I remember the long slow shot of Ale's leg emerging from the car at some point last week.

As for hyper short skirts, the French have a saying for that.... "En veux-tu? En voilà." (you want it? here it is.) I happened to be living in Europe in the 60's mini-skirt era and the gals in the boarding house taught me that one!

Diana...I've always loved "Slough of Despond". I think it's from Milton's Paradise Lost (probably should google it to make sure) but anyway, it tickled me the first time I heard a former English teacher use it.

Oh yes, and we knew Rafa had a good voice but what did you think of those nifty hip moves and dance steps!!! Wow, I was really impressed. The padded shoulders and skin-tight pants helped with the overall effect, but man, that guy could bust some moves. I loved it.

Well, off to teach another class this morning. Dreading the hard floor (linoleum over concrete) and the tepid air-conditioning there (set at 75 which is fine if you're answering telephones, but 10 degrees too high if you're dancing and lifting weights). Okay, basta ya! no more whining.

Thanks for reminding me Barb. I left that out of the vocab list but just put it in.

Another wonderful recap! You recappers a really the best. Sorry I don't post a comment every day, but I do read all of your excellent recaps everyday. I don't know how you all do it so thoroughly and quickly!

I only caught the last half hour, but it seems like I didn't miss anything. At least we didn't have a lot of crying this time (well, except for Vicky's fakey crying). And no random salon scene. Guess the random police scene made up for it.

Mil from NC

Judy- Wonderful recap amiga, with some great lines and vocab. This episode was not as emotionally draining as last week's, but still many sad moments as our lovers are still parting and heartbroken. In the past when they were separated, they were usually angry at each other and so got hyper sarcastic and competitive. But this time, the both of them can barely function. Slough of despond, indeed.

I really liked the little sweet moments that have already been mentioned- Trapito and his love Susana, Dandy and his face when he heard he was this month's best salesman, Pepeto telling Rafa he is the same wonderful guy he's always been. In another novela, the Pepeto character would have turned evil. He was always kind of a shady charcter, but when he saw how successful Rafa became in a legit business, instead of getting jealous, he was inspired to do the same. He does not mind following in Rafa's footsteps and learning from him, and supporting him in his success. There are some great examples of frienship in this tn, and a lot of poiting it out when someone isn't being a good friend (Marino).

Yes, I agree. The director and/or producer is a leg man. :) In the beginning Ale wasn't always in gam revealing outfits. After she came back from her surgery and therapy in the US though, she came back with a more glamorous look, which included a lot more leg, all the time. But she does have great legs. Like she told her tia- she can't hide one of her best assets. Susana is the only female character whose legs we have never seen. When she's worn a dress, it's been a maxi dress. She's called flacita by everyone, so perhaps the director thinks her gams aren't shapely enough. Plus it would be so out of character.

Judy, excellent recap. This time you really did spin gold from straw. When last night's episode ended I asked no one in particular, "That's it? World Cup Soccer is more exciting than that." Thanks for doing a Dr. Judy CPR, breathing some life into a rather lifeless presentation. Rubi, phone home.

Carlos

Thanks Vivi for that thoughtful analyis of the new emotional developments and Pepeto's maturation. At least someone's "growing up" in this one. (Well Dandy is too.) And Carlos...I'm with you. Come back Rubi and give us some laughs!

Mil from NC. Thanks for checking in and for those kind words for all us recappers. As you may have read in Vivi's post yesterday, the el Clon recappers have folded their tents because there was so little feedback from commenters. They are posting a discussion site only.

Knowing people are reading and benefiting in some way from the hours we spend on this helps keep us going. We all have jobs, family issues and sometimes health issues which make recapping difficult but we keep on plugging for our readers.

Good morning all, and thanks for the wonderful recap Judy! I agree with you Judy that the best part of the episode last night was the expression on Dandy's face when he was announced as salesman of the month. Priceless! I wish we could see more of him and Susana, they're so adorable. Especially now when Ale and Rafa are so sad and apart.

They certainly do like to show legs and plunging necklines. No complaints from my husband - it's his favorite part of the show. :) He misses the salon scenes because Ovi is always wearing such skimpy outfits.

And, Judy, we REALLY appreciate it! I think no I know that I speak for everyone here.

Yeah, really slow episode, be glad when we get some more comic relief.

I really hope that Rafa has the nads to tell papa and brothers grim that he DOES NOT love VVV and IS NOT marrying her. Or I at least wish someone would catch her dancing in the mirror and know that she is faking, I mean like the other day when pops and bros were coming up the stairs they were all yelling Vicky! Vicky!, what was up with that, if she really were sick do they think that it would make her feel better hearing them all yell at the same time. Uuuggghh!

From tomorrow's preview looks like Rafa gets Dandy back on his side and they are planning something, hopefully it will ge good. Maybe Rafa will let Dandy in on the Marco blackmail and he, in turn, will say something to Susana soon. Then they can all work together to reunite the loving couple that we all miss!

Judy, thanks for the excellent recap as always. As you pointed out, mordida means a bribe, although literally, it's a bite. Another word that Marian used was "cohecho" which also means a bribe. Suborno is another. Wonder why they have so many words for bribes? :)

My Ale-hair theory was proven wrong, since her hair was down, and she's still on the outs with Rafa. I do have some theories about Susana though (also probably wrong). First of all, since she's actually much taller than Ale, they always have her wear flats, so she won't tower over her. Second, I bet she actually has terrific legs, and again, they don't want to detract from Ale, so Susana always wears pants. Of course her character wouldn't wear super sexy things anyway, so it all "fits".

Hi Tracie and Kat. Tracie, I had to laugh when I heard that the plunging necklines and precipitously rising skirts were your husband's favorite part of the show. I guess the writers figure the only way to lure men away from soccer it to show the goods. Ovi is lovely, I must admit. Certainly better looking than those policemen.

And Kat, I certainly hope you're right and that Dandy can get Susana back on Rafa's side. It's bad enough that Ale is giving him the cold shoulder, but when our sweet Susana stops supporting him, it's just TOO SAD.

Judy thanks for your recap and vocab. The fact you did this in a humid room just increases my admiration for you. I too enjoyed the "slough of despond." What a great phrase.

Pata - I enjoyed your observation regarding Susana & Trapito. Her treatment of her crush demonstrates the sweetness of her character. It's also rare we see a character handle a crush with kindness.

Vivi - another great observation regarding characters. It is exciting seeing a character like Pepeto grow and change for the better as opposed to what usually occurs.

Hola Hombre. Thanks for the extra vocabulary. I'll add it. Yep, bribes certainly seem to be the norm for certain countries. Well, perhaps it's the norm everywhere, although we like to think it's different here. Lobbyists maybe?

Sorry your hair theory is wrong. Not sure about the Susana strategy. Have we even seen her arms? Lot of coverage for our Kama Sutra New Age gal. We'll have to ask Dandy about those legs.

Karen, it's interesting how we get to know people by what they pick up on.

Pata, I think, must be a tender-hearted romantic gal. She has such affection for these characters, finds them so endearing and readily forgives their foibles.

Vivi, I imagine is a deep thinker, always aware of characters' motivations, sensitive to the nuances of their development, on the alert for psychological changes.

Or else, I'm just full of it!

Also, I see Hombre as a scholar, ready to add more info if he has it.

Carlos is a natural stand up comedian who can note and generate humor as easily as he breathes.

Those are just some of my conclusions. Did I hit any targets or am I way off?

Now I'll have to think about Barbara, Mil from NC, Tracie and Kat!

Karen, I see you and Diana as inclusive and supportive. Not only do you find nice things to say about the recaps, you also affirm the interesting observations of various commenters.

Hmmm...I'm on a roll now. Or again, maybe the heat and humidity is making me delirious!

Alright, one more thing. I see Barbara as this mysterious gal who evidently needs no sleep! She posts at 2:30 am and again at 7:30 am or so! Night owl? Insomniac? Or just someone who needs little sleep. Verrrrrry interesting.

Judy, I laugh at my husband too! He just loves the scenes with Claudia and Ovi. In fact, when we first stumbled onto this show we came back to it the next night not only because we thought it was hilarious but also because the preview showed Claudia getting frisky in the bathroom with the Siglo employee who was later fired. Gregg just couldn't miss that! And then I got drawn into the story and months later I'm still addicted..... :)

Hi Judy - Wonderful recap, and I only saw the very end of the episode last night, so I greatly appreciated having it!

I need to ask something off subject. I have written the recap for CS and sent it to Connie who has been posting for me. But I haven't heard from her and it isn't up. Is there any way you could help me with this? I don't have Melinama's email. But if you can, please email me at irainroot@gmail.com. Thank you and I'll try to get back with a comment later!

Ivy

Ivy- I'll e-mail you now.

Judy- You are too kind. I think you've picked out all those qualities in us, because those are qualities you possess. After all, the way we see the world and other people is really just a reflection of ourselves.

Thank you - Connie got back to me and I'm glad she is okay, she will post now.

Hi Ivy. Sorry I missed your request. Glad Vivi fielded it. You DO have Melinama's email though. It's there on the sidebar.

Vivi...you've just confirmed your sinsitivity and insight. "After all, the way we see the world is just a reflection of ourselves." Great wisdom there lady. I'd expect nothing less.

Ivy, yes, I noticed your recap is up. Will go back and read it now.

Tracie, how interesting that that's how you got caught up in the show. And I'm glad you two can watch it together (ditto for Kat and her beau). My husband has no interesting in Spanish TV and neither do my adult children when they're around. But I wouldn't even have known there was a TV station in Spanish if my husband hadn't been flipping through the channels. That's what gave me the impetus to finally study the language.

Judy, we found the show because my husband was channel surfing too. The first scene we saw was Ale chasing Rafa around her office yelling at him and waving her crutches around. We thought it was so hilarious and kept watching (and then of course Claudia showed up wearing next to nothing)! It's so much fun watching the show together. I really enjoy the comedy and romance. Hope it gets back to that soon - these recent episodes have been so sad.

Judy, we also found the show because my husband was channel surfing. The first scene we saw was Ale chasing Rafa around her office, yelling at him and waving her crutches around. We thought it was so hilarious and kept watching (and then of course Claudia showed up wearing next to nothing)! It's so much fun watching together. I really enjoy the comedy and romance. I hope they get back to that soon - the last few episodes have been so sad.

Sorry if this ends up being a double post - my computer is being weird so I re-typed it.

Oops, it did post twice. Sorry!

Judy - like I said earlier, recap much appreciated and you did make it enjoyable where the show may not have been so much! Thank you for the vocabulary as well, I didn't know quite a bit of those. Sorry you are dealing with heat, I just hate that! It's better to have cold because you can do more about it.

I am still not too motivated to watch this, finding it painful still, but I may try tonight.

Now here's my question Tracie. Do YOU ever get to hold the remote? Do you care? Bob channel surfs constantly and sometimes I actually enjoy the ads. But I miss them, of course. And sometimes he doesn't get back in time and we miss part of the show we were watching. An informal survey in my classes indicates the remote is definitely gender-related. I'm reading a book by a neuroscientist called Pink Brain Blue Brain and I'm wondering if the author will ever explain the Remote Differential.

Hi again Ivy. Let's just say I could totally use a dose of the Beach Episode right now. That's been my favorite part of the show...even more so than the actual now-we're-novios-and-we're-making-love section.

Judy, the beach episodes are my favorites too :) And the episodes way back when they were at the wedding.

When we're watching a show that I really want to see I steal the remote and don't let the hubby channel surf. Otherwise I don't care if he randomly flips around. Sometimes you find good shows like this one and get addicted!

Aha...stealth remote control. Atta girl Tracie. "Appropriately assertive" as we say. Hey, thanks for reminding me about the wedding series of episodes. That was sweet too. Why is it that almost-romances and almost-kisses are so captivating?..often more so than the actual romantic culmination.

Hi, just got home and finished reading all the comments. One of the first things I do when I get home is kick off my shoes and go to the Caray site. It has been fun lately to see so many fun and interesting comments. It is fun to know how people get hooked on certain TV shows. Traci I enjoyed learning how you and your husband started watching. And Judy you just hang on to that remote!!

Oh Judy, Judy, Judy---I like it!!
" I see Barbara as this mysterious gal..."
As is too usual in real life, the answer is just mundane. Worked late, came home and after routine chores and dinner, indulged in my little passion of telenovelas and CarayCaray. Had to turn around and be back at work this AM but peeked here first at our Dinero site.

Put my vote for the affirmative that remote control possession must be a dominant gene on the Y chromosome.

Oh Gosh Barb....I'd already imagined this ingenious scenario. One was that you had a night job and so kept odd hours. The other was that you lived in Europe somewhere so you'd be posting at strange times. I had my Barb telenovela half-written awready! Still, I admire your ability to get by on little sleep. I do on recap nights. Bed by midnight (adrenaline still churning) and up at a quarter to 6 but otherwise I'm a slug.

Not all men hog the remote, or channel surf like mad. In our house, we have two main places to watch TV. In the den, Fran has her Tivo, and uses its remote to zip through all her recordings. I have no clue how that works. In the basement, I have a multi-function remote which she has no clue how to work. Usually we just watch our own things, but if we visit each other to watch something together, the remote is controlled by whose "domain" we're in. BTW, I never channel surf, I generally plan the entire evening in advance.

I realize this may sound a bit strange, but we've been married 32 years and counting, so we must be doing something right!

Judy,
" Still, I admire your ability to get by on little sleep." Thanks, I do it, but I don't do it well.
And, "otherwise I'm a slug". Yea right. My impression is you're both a mental and physical dynamo!

Next up all-- my favorite show!

A quick note before the next installment of HQEDNS......

I really love reading all the comments. Maybe I can create some mystique about myself....sadly, life is pretty ordinary here.

I keep hoping that I'll improve my Spanish watching these shows. So far the Spanish I've learned hasn't helped too much - not much opportunity to say "no me toques" or "me costó un trabajo arreglarme" (as I said, my life is pretty ordinary!).

Mil in NC

Mil from NC...Hey, who needs mystique or mysterious? Empathic, supportive, appreciative, warm, caring, sense of humor....those are all adjectives I'd use to describe you, based on your comments.

I would hazard a guess that you're good at relationships, an understanding listener and always....a very good friend.

Works for me!

Hombre. I love it. Separate domains but open to the other. Domain meister rules, however.

In addition to the reasons your marriage works, I remember from other comments that you really love and appreciate your wife, her assertive character, her "spark". I love "hearing" the affection in your voice when you speak of her. (seems this came up during Querida Enemiga days...oh so long ago!)

Barbara...I am both a dynamo and a slug. And I'm both an introvert and an extrovert (well let's say I'm right smack dab in the middle of the Meyers-Briggs scale).

But after teaching a a high-energy class and being Sparkle Plenty for a couple of hours, I really love just kicking back and being quiet on my own. The balance is what keeps me going.

Pata, missed your comment back there. I'm like you, wherever I've been, first thing I like to do after kicking off my shoes is check the CarayCaray site. Always fun, often informative, sometimes very surprising. Thank you Melinama and the Internet.

The almost romances and almost kisses are so captivating! All of the anticipation and the 'will they or won't they' story lines are so much fun to watch.

Ooh, show is starting now!
