El Clon, Monday, June 28 - Summary for Discussion

¿Llevas doce años buscando a eso muchacho, soñando con el, imaginándolo, viéndolo donde no estaba, y ahora que lo encuentras entonces no lo quieres ver?
You spend twelve years looking for the kid, dreaming about him, seeing him when he wasn't there and now that you find him, you don't want to see him? says Luisa to Albieri who is having a very tough time explaining why he and Luisa can't go over to Dora's.

Osvi is too burdened with his troubles to dance with Dora. He tells her that he isn't feeling well.

Finally Albieri tests Luisa's reaction to the truth,
¿Luisa, tú qué harias si yo hiciera un clon de Lucas? Luisa, what would you do if I made a clone of Lucas? [he uses the preterite perfect subjunctive of 'make,' - hiciera, which leads Luisa to think that he is talking about something that hasn't happened. If he had used the preterite anterior subjunctive - hube hecho, it would have been clear that he 'had made' a clone of Lucas.] Luisa doesn't say that making a clone of Lucas without his knowledge would be a fantastic scientific achievement. She says that it would be stealing Lucas' identity. Albieri says that he can't talk any more due to fatigue and leaves.

Fernando can't get his head around the idea of his mother going out with a younger guy. Clara says that when he sees the Chump to tell him to bring her share of the Euros or she'll rip his girlfriend's hair out (le arranco los pelos a su amante).

Osvi finds Karla and shows her the notice from the court. He says the notice is to appear in a month to be sentenced [he doesn't even get a trial?]. Osvi tells Karla that he has done everything she asked. She mentions that she has met Roberto and it turns out that the comadre of Osvi's mother works in Roberto's house. Karla thinks that she and Osvi can come to an agreement if he produces the phone number of the employee and Osvi promises to get it.

[You remember how on the later Star Trek series like Voyager or Deep Space Nine, the aliens would just have some bumps on their foreheads? Maybe Osvaldo is an alien?]

Nati tells Andrea and Fernando that Alej got fired. Fernando suggests to Nati that they blow a stick to relax. She agrees.

For some unknown reason, Leo wants Marisa to return to the house so that she and Lucas can be divorced in a 'civilized' manner.

Said and Marisa have some pillow talk. Said says that he would be attracted to her even if he didn't have a plan of vengeance. He asks if she is still in love with Lucas. Marisa says that she doesn't like how Lucas behaves or thinks but, 'me siento vacias cuando no estoy con el,' I feel empty if I am not with him.' [I'm sure Lucas' money will make you feel less empty.] Said says that he loved Jade from the first moment he saw her and wants her only for him.

Zoraida is at Latifa's house on her way to the airport to be sent back to Morocco in disgrace. Jadiya wants to go back with her but Latifa has to lie and tell her that Said will bring her to see her mother soon. The Naz scolds Latifa for lying to spare Jadiya pain.

Pablo thinks the story of Alej's firing is very strange and he says that he will see if Cristina knows what is going on. Then he tells Alej that he has booked a fight for him that has a $5,000. prize.

Enrique goes home from work, downs a bottle of scotch and heads out the door.

Alej tells Nati that they have to leave the apartment because he doesn't have the money to pay the rent. Nati will have to go back to her parents' house. Bummer.

Enrique has the first Clone Encounter. He calls Daniel 'Lucas' and when Daniel replies that he is mistaken, Enrique decides that he is seeing Diego. Daniel excuses himself politely.

Daniel shows some really bad taste and hooks up with the skank. I guess this is so we can have a stupid jealousy plot later with Jade. I can't wait.

Leo asks Marisa to return to the house. He says that she is like the daughter he never had and she says that he has been a father to her. Leo, of course, doesn't care what Lucas thinks about this. Meanwhile, Alej has brought Nati home. She goes up to her room and tells Rosa that she wants to be alone.

All the fun is happening at Leo's house tonight. Enrique shows up and tells Leo, Rosa, Marisa and finally Lucas, about his encounter with 'Diego.'

Enrique and Rosa are convinced that Diego's spirit has returned. Leo, Marisa and Lucas are convinced that Enrique has lost his mind.

Alej is moping at Gloria's and doesn't want to eat.

Nati agrees to go to a club with Andrea and Fernando. Nati, ¿Quieres algo que te va a sacar de esa mala onda de una? Nati, do you want something that will get rid of your bad mood in an instant? asks Fer. Foolish Nati agrees and later is leaping around high on something.

Alej has flashbacks to happy times with Nati.

Zoraida returns to Ali's house. She tells Jade that they are both in trouble now. Once again, Jade blames Lucas for not kidnapping Jade. Zoraida falls back on the old, 'don't trust Westerners.' Jade calls Lucas' house and Marisa answers the phone.

The credits roll.

Thank you, Jean. Your recap was the best thing about the episode.

Nicely done, as always, Jean. Thanks!

When Enrique called Daniel "Diego", it seemed to strike a chord with Daniel. Maybe at the moment he couldn't quite remember that Albieri sometimes called him "Diego", but at some level it was familiar to him.

Thanks very much, Jean, for an excellent summary, with great photos and helpful Spanish. I have to say that I agree with Paula--your summary was indeed the best thing about the episode. I enjoyed Enrique's impassioned account of seeing "Diego," but most of the rest of the episode either angered me (Leo's asking Marisa to return to the house), disappointed me (Nati's turning to drugs), or made me yawn (Daniel's encounter with Karla, the scene between Said and Marisa, Jade's anger at Lucas, etc. etc.).

Does anyone know how much longer this TN will run? It had great potential, but the writers are ruining it.

Thanks for the summary Jean, and the Spanish. This episode was mostly bad news (Naughty Nati has no integrity, Leoncito and Karla are their normal selves, etc.), but it had a few fun moments.

The cliffhanger resolution was even less eventful than I had guessed. I find it funny that Albieri asks everyone these counterfactual questions: "What would you do if I were to make a clone of Lucas?" and nobody seems to care why he's asking. "What would you do if I told you I dropped your toothbrush in the toilet? Purely hypothetical question!"

I didn't notice Osvaldo looking like a Star Trek alien (I call them "Foreheads"). Good catch. My favorite Osvaldo moment was when he left the bar, in his "wife beater" shirt and fancy jacket, with a sad face and a wink. He's complicated.

Is it just bad editing, or did Enrique go through three bottles of liquor, plus the drinks he had at the bar? He was remarkably coherent (and alive) for having downed a gallon of booze in an hour. (Then again, I can never tell how long things take on telenovelas.)

I enjoyed his speech about "Diego". With Rosa egging him on, he got very excited about spirits coming back to help the living: Ghost-Diego said, "Sorry buddy, I have to go. Take care." OMG! You know what that means!!!

Luke, I like your "toothbrush in the toilet; purely hypothetical." That certainly makes your point very clear!

And Star Trek alien "Foreheads" are fine, but I prefer TwoHeads:
"Zaphod Beeblebrox, is that really you?"
"Sure it is! Count the heads!"

Jane, Thank you for a great summary with pictures and translations. Very helpful.

Lucas, I'm still laughing over your toothbrush in the toilet remark.

The anonymous note gave more info re Jade and Daniel than this first-time viewer wanted to know.

Anonymous- I removed your comment as a bit too spoilerish.

However, I ask myself that question all the time - if this is a faithful remake of the Brazilian novela, why is it considered such a classic? The Brazilian version might have had better production values, acting, or music but presumably it has the same incredibly slow moving plot, which is the real killer for me. The same things keep happening over and over.

Jean, thank you for the recap, etc. I appreciate your Spanish lessons. Do you teach Spanish in real life?

It was a strange comment by Marisa about Lucas. Does Lucas feed her anger, evilness, etc.?

I feel so sad about Nati. I hate to see where this is going but I hope it ends well.

El Clon was projected to have 135 episodes and tonight will be #95, so if projections were correct, we have 45 more to go.

Rosemary

Thanks all.

Luke - I love the toothbrush in the toilet analogy. LOL!

You have to wonder why Luisa didn't ask what the connection was between Albieri wanting to make a clone of Lucas and his refusal to go visit Dora and Daniel.

Osvaldo is about the only character that has matured.

Recappers thank you for the Spanish lessons they add so much to the understanding of the episode. What I imagine is that the tn will just clunk along, then wind up the last weeks with a lot narrative moving months of action to the final two or three days. Frances

I thought I heard that Clon had been extended to something in the 140's, but now I can't find it, so I'm not sure.

Over on the TNW forum, they talk a ton about the comparisons between the Brazilian and this one, always "that was so great, this is so awful." I confess I skip over most of it, but the complaints seem to be that this one is too superficial and lacks the magic. I don't see complaints about this one's plot going nowhere, so wouldn't that indicate that the original was just as bad? You could ask over there, but you should expect any answer to contain major spoilers.

Here is what drives me mad about Alej and Nati. "Our love will last forever. Nothing can separate us." Except unemployment.

I was wrong about the extension. The episode count will not be in the 140's. It'll be 183, per the Globo TV web site.

It's kinda' like going to the dentist to get a cavity filled, and finding out you need a root canal.

PaulaH, thanks for the update. I cannot believe they extended this to 183 episodes. It will run into the fall.

Rosemary

Ow, a root canal! I guess CarayCaray is our novocain, but sometimes I find myself wishing for a general anaesthetic!

Let's hope the Globo site is wrong. The Wikipedia entry, which is very up to date (has the name of almost all the episodes shown so far), says 130 episodes. (Be careful, there are spoilers in this entry.) It also says that El Clon was preceded by Mas Sabe El Diablo and will be succeeded by El Fantasma de Elena. Telemundo just started doing promos for Fantasma, which would be about right for an August gran estreno.
Let's hope!!

Thanks, Jean. Great summary of an annoying episode.

I can't believe 183. That HAS to be a mistake. I've come to the conclusion that 95 to 100 is about the right length. Carla Estrada, responsible for some great ones, keeps hers at about that length.

The only character I'm liking right now is Cristina. Actually, I always liked her. My fingers are crossed that she's really over Leoncito, but I doubt it. Her new look is great and she's doing something besides obsessing. If only she'd listen to her friend about Malicia.

I actually bit on the plot device of Albieri being close to telling Luisa, especially after he downed a couple of drinks. But no. This novela is all tease and no action.

A little cloud passed Marisa's face when Said told her how much he loved Jade. She's never going to surpass Jade in male devotion.

Tio Abdul is a cartoon. I must say that beard looks real.

Luke, I was also amazed at how much Enrique put away. In real life he would have passed out before he saw Daniel!

I hope the makers of this tn have been reading our comments. Most days, I just fast forward.

Surprisingly, Perro Amor turned out to be much better. The villains get knocked down a notch every once in awhile, instead of waiting til the very end.

ah yes, Marisa must be seething, since both Lucas and Said are in love w/ Jade.

Jean, tuning in late to say thanks for the amazing recap!
Luke, you are correct, Enrique downed 3 botellas plus several more glasses of whiskey or whatever...I doubt whether he would have been able to remember running into Daniel earlier in the evening. For that matter, it's amazing he was able to find his way to the Ferrer mansion.
:o)
