La Verdad Oculta #004 2010/09/03: Who Moved Adolfo's Cheese?

Harry Geithner debuts as Leonardo Faidella

Insomniacs Club

At the scene of the accident, Alejandra painfully limps from the taxi to the microbus. Someone lays Piedad with a head injury out on the ground, and Alejandra is in so much pain she sinks down next to the microbus. Amid smoke and blood, they wait for the ambulances; Doña Piedad isn't moving.

In Adolfo's luxury condo, Yolanda tells Félix that at the Sagittarius restaurant, she saw a waitress looking exactly like Márta. Her family details fit, too, she says. Yolanda pointed this out to Adolfo at the time, but he didn't care, she says.

Thinking back, she says he never should have done "that" -- much less blamed Santiago. When Félix points out that Márta unfortunately found out about their smuggling, Yolanda insists she could have convinced Márta not to turn Adolfo in. They were friends, she says.

But Félix is tired of this complaint: if Yolanda had cared so much about Márta, she should have turned Adolfo in and saved her. But Yolanda liked the money too much, didn't she, Félix prods. Yolanda doesn't answer; but then pointedly comments that he can't bother Gabriela, because he himself well knows Santiago is innocent.

Medics place Alejandra on the rescue squad bay to triage her, while she listens to a medic describe the grandmotherly woman's injuries, amid a din and moaning. Finally someone pulls a blood-stained sheet completely over the lady's face, and they wheel her gurney into a waiting ambulance.

At the Genovés's mansion, Berthe is going out carousing and begs a house key from David. She'll be returning late, she says. David tells her with a knowing look to take care of herself; and before exiting she gleefully pecks him on the lips, regretting there are so few good-looking keepers like him -- to which he looks perplexed.

A phone call he receives alarms David, and he runs straight out. While in her apartment, Elsa phones around worriedly trying to locate Piedad. She finally gives up and calls the authorities, where she learns to her frantic dismay that there has been a microbus accident with serious injuries.

Back at the Genovés mansion, Abelardo tries to comfort a tearful Mario, who learned earlier that day he has an inoperable, terminal brain tumor. At the hospital, David visits Alejandra in bed with a neck brace, who is embarrassed to be transferred to such luxurious digs.

David wants to make sure next time she uses the family cars; with a sweet smile he tells her their house and everything in it is hers, including him. She marvels at this; and as he moves to her side, Alejandra repeats, "including him?" Of course, he says, grinning. He's her cousin, her friend, her admirer -- and he's going to be her driver until she's better.

She grins and thanks him gratefully, and they both agree it's a shame they haven't been close -- but will be from now on. Alejandra offers her hand and says she cares very much about him, and he also says so in return. As he's leaving, she reveals she hurts all over and wonders how bad she looks; and she chuckles when he says terrible.

At a city morgue, Elsa breaks up pitifully when she has to identify the body of Piedad. At Gabriela's, she explodes in frustration when she and Julieta encounter Fausto finishing up the packing. They changed cities every six months as kids, she exclaims. It makes no sense; they can't finish their education!

How are they ever going to be anything but waitresses? Gabriela demands. He never gives any good reason for moving, either. She grills him on details of his decision; and when his answers sound lame, Gabriela digs her heels in. If he wants to leave, fine! she exclaims. She and Julieta are not!

At the mansion, David questions Abelardo about Mario's health, but Abelardo denies any problem. David explains about Alejandra's accident but doesn't want Mario worried about it. Later in his home office, when Abelardo urges Mario to get a second opinion, Mario definitely wants to. He can't die now! he says.

If he does, he explains, David and Gabriela will both be left with nothing! No one must know he's sick, Mario insists -- especially Adolfo. With Abelardo looking perplexed, Mario reveals the conditions of their business contract: if either partner dies before the 20 years is up, everything goes to the survivor!

Mario must stick around for at least six months until the deal is up; and when Abelardo can't fathom why Mario would have put up with such an absurd stipulation, Mario reveals to a shocked Abelardo that Adolfo has him under his thumb, accusing him of the murder of Márta -- the mother of his daughter.

In a warehouse district, a team of AFI agents (i.e., FBI: "Agencia Federal de Investigación) pour out of an SUV and, armed to the teeth, silently stalk smugglers moving merchandise into a warehouse. One crook spies them, but is overcome; and the team, led by detective Leonardo Faidella (Harry Geithner), swarms into the warehouse to capture the others, except for one -- who escapes.

At Gabriela's, it seems Fausto has reluctantly agreed to stay put; he begins to unpack. At the luxury condo, Carlos is just leaving when Félix enters with a determined air and braces Adolfo at the breakfast table with the news their new warehouse has been breached! The cops took everything and everyone -- except for one guy who told the story! he reports.

This puts Adolfo on his feet, exclaiming he had five million pesos tied up in that merchandise! Who in hell knew about it, he wonders. He's been losing too much money lately! Up in Elsa's apartment, she sobs inconsolably over Piedad when the doorbell rings; and it's Carlos, just come from breakfast with his dad.

She's in no shape for company and asks him to leave, but he insists on feigning to comfort her. He pretends interest as she explains the reason for her sorrow -- and offers to help her in various ways. Finally, when she turns him down the last time, he just leaves his card and promises to help if she needs anything.

At the prison, Elsa has come to meet with Juan Jose; but she's crying so hard she can't tell him his mother is dead. Juan Jose mistakenly thinks the sharp lawyer must be giving her a hard time, so is completely shocked to hear there was a fatal accident. He rejects that Piedad could be dead, sobbing and asking repeatedly where his mother could be.

At the Sagittarius restaurant, at Roberto's urging, Carlos asks Adolfo on the phone if he might have a job for Roberto; but Adolfo ignores him. Yolanda enters the restaurant and snags Gabriela to have a private talk; she commandeers Carlos's office and boots the boyz out. She learns to her surprise that Fausto is a night watchman but doesn't learn much else new.

Out in the bar, Carlos explains to Roberto that Yolanda is a former dancer who is just good friends with Adolfo and that Carlos is very fond of her even if she's kind of crazy. Carlos admits he went by the "naca's" place earlier; and together with Gabriela, Roberto points out Carlos has a thing for slumming with working-class girls.

About then David arrives to sit at their table. He asks Roberto whether he's seen Alejandra lately; and Roberto lies that he saw her just that day at the office to talk about the wedding date. When David points out facetiously then that Roberto must know she's been in the hospital since the other day, Carlos sniggers at Roberto -- and happily jabs David for being future relatives with Roberto.

David is just asking after the new waitress when Yolanda and Gabriela emerge from the office, and he calls to Gabriela who comes over and greets him agreeably. From back in the office, Roberto and Carlos can see on the closed-circuit TV that David is flirting with Gabriela; and Roberto digs at Carlos about it until he's in a jealous snit. Out in the bar, Carlos orders Gabriela back to work and David to leave the help alone. After both leave, Carlos swears to Roberto that idiot annoys him more and more every day.

A little later, up in the hotel penthouse, David sits working at his desk when the door buzzes; and it's Gabriela with a serving cart. David has ordered a champagne supper for two. When he tries to invite her to share it with him, he keeps touching her; and Gabriela gets the apparently wrong idea and becomes furious.

Gabriela accuses him of being a spoiled rich guy, feeling free to insult others -- and gives him another smack on the face. After she leaves, he leisurely pours a glass of champagne and ruefully admits to himself that he deserved that.

At the luxury condo, Adolfo tells Félix it's about time they got rid of Mario; he explains that if one of the partners expires before the next six months when their contract is up, the survivor receives everything -- and that survivor should be himself, Adolfo thinks.

Comments:
There was an actual Insomniacs Club in the 1990's.

Univision used to rerun novelas overnight in a big 2-hour chunk from like 2 a.m. to 4 a.m!

It was glorious; I watched some goodies on it, such as "Alondra."

And they called it the Insomniacs Club.

So, by what Yolanda says, it might have been Félix who murdered Márta.

And the way David touched his lips after Berthe kissed him looked perplexed -- but also kind of disapproving, I thought.

David was just the sweetest to Alejandra in the hospital; I am just loving this guy.

I was never a particular fan of Gabriel Soto before this, but I like the David character.

Thank you, Jeri! :) Loved the title.

Insomniacs Club: LOL. I'm a night owl so I think I would've liked those crazy telenovela nights in the 90's.

Here are the screencaps I made:

Thanks Jeri for posting this and Aribeth for the YouTube links. Things are moving along. That is an interesting contract Mario and Adolfo(sp?) has.

That was sad scene when Elsa had to identify Piedad's body and then tell JJ that his mother is dead. Good acting there from EY. I can see why he won an award for this role.

LOL that David admitted he deserved that slap for coming on to Gabi. She showed him she's not that kind of girl didn't she.

I am definitely an insomniac since having to stay up late to watch CS and now this. Sometimes, I'm awake until six in the morning. When I do fall asleep it's only for a couple of hours.

Thanks so much Jeri and Aribeth for starting us off on such a good note this first week of the novela.

Poor Piedad! Poor JJ! Will Ale seek out information about the poor old lady that died and meet JJ that way? I'm also worried for Elsa living all alone again with all those wolves sniffing at her door. Salomon, Roberto, Carlos, and we haven't even met the lawyer yet. Even though she has money to pay him, he might still want other kinds of payment from her. The girl needs some friends. She needs to meet Gabi who can teach her how to deliver some well placed slaps to men who try to get fresh.

The next secret that needs to be revealed is that David isn't Mario's blood child, so I can stop feeling so creepy about him and Gabi falling for each other.

I also thought that Felix is the possible killer of Marta from the looks that passed between him and Yolanda when they spoke about the subject. I had thought perhaps she was an ex wife of Adolfo, but hearing she was a dancer at one of his restuarants and that they were never married, shows just how much she must know about his dirty business and that she would reveal those secrets if he stopped supporting her. Hmmm... More tomorrow. Off to enjoy the day! I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend and the holiday!

So the contraband was cheese not cigarettes or stolen arms, ha, ha. Thank you, Jeri, for the recap and Aribeth for the links. Thanks for clearing up the matter of the Yoland/Adolfo relationship. I was thinking she was Carlos' mom. E Y's acting is racheted down a notch for the better. I found his crying scene very effective, as well. And I agree, Gabriel Soto is very likeable in this role and his nice smile makes him seem less wooden than with some other roles.

Jeri and Aribeth--
Just to let you know that there is another watcher and appreciator of this new novela and your summaries. I've loved Gabriel Soto, wooden or not, since Querida Enemiga (the first novela I ever watched) and Sortilegio. I didn't watch CS, but I do like EY so far.
Newbie

I have a question. I just can't watch this novela, even though it's supposed to be good since I'm already watching 3 others! Watching this one would eliminate taking showers and brushing my teeth from my schedule. I've already given up housecleaning!

The question is this, why is the Yáñez character in jail?

Novelera, Juan Jose was convicted of raping and murdering a woman, but he didn't do it. He has served 11 eleven years of a 19 year sentence. The sadest part last night was Piedad dying and Elsa having to tell Juan Jose. I cried at that because you could see the disbelief and grief etched on Juan Jose's face. Great acting job.

Thanks, Barbara. I've certainly never heard of a novela starting out with one of the main characters in jail. Interesting

Jeri, thanks for recap. So now we actually know who killed Marta, I had a feeling Adolfo was somehow connected, he's so evil. I still wonder if same person killed her and dead hotel girl? I can't wait for when EY's character is out of jail. I did watch Sortilegio and liked Gabriel Soto and William Levy in it, but I also like him in this one. I like the boss/employee possible love match between David and Gabi. I think Elsa may hook up with Juan, but I feel she's too young and innocent for him. He needs someone more experienced and feisty.

Newbie, nice to see you; don't be a stranger. :-)

I wonder about Salomón. He's evil and he has a place in the story along with his evil son.

Salomón would be about the right age to have raped and killed a hotel employee 12 years ago.

He must be in this story for something. I wonder who gave Marcos the name of that icky lawyer, too. They are both predators.

P.S. I've been wondering whether Yolanda actually is Carlos's mom.

When she was warning Adolfo not to mistreat his son, she included a reference to herself.

How she knew personally better than to do that. So she has some issues with a child.

I tried to imagine the first date of Alejandra and Juan José.

JJ: It was a lovely night.
A: Yes, indeed. I have had a great time with you.
JJ: You know, I have to tell you something.
A: Yes?
JJ: I... I like you. Much.
A: Oh, Juan José, I like you too!
*huge smiles*
A: Honey, tell me about yourself. What's your job? Do you have a family?
JJ: Well, I'm a carpenter.
A: That sounds interesting!
JJ: Yes, it's kind of fun. I was the best worker in the prison's workshop.
A: Wow, that's great, in the pris... WHAT?! You was in jail?
JJ: But I was innocent, you have to know that. I spent 11 years behind those bars.
A: My poor darling, that's awful! Why were you imprisoned? For shoplifting? LOL.
JJ: For brutally raping and murdering a beautiful young woman.
A: ...
JJ: Hmmm, this soup is delicious!
A: ...
JJ: Want some more wine?

LOL, yeah...it's going to be interesting!

I was sure as everyone else that the bus wreck was going to be how Alejandra and Juan Jose meet. But no dice so far.

Even if she goes to some survivors memorial or something, how is he going to get out of jail for that, I wonder.

Aribeth, that was priceless. I laughed loud and long over the supposed first date. Juan Jose will win Alejandra over, we just don't know how. Until then, we wait with bated breath in anticipation of their first meeting, but the script you wrote, Aribeth, is just too good!!!

Welcome, Newbie! Glad that you joined us here. How may we call you?

Barbara: Thank you! :))

I'm wondering how old Juan José is. We're used to EY playing 25 years old men, but this time his character must be over 30. However, I doubt that he would be over 35. I got the impression that he was a young and naive boy when he got dumped into jail. Maybe 21-22.
And in this episode we learnt that Piedad was 75 years old.

Thanks for the recap Jeri!

It's interesting that they've killed off JJ's mother so soon in the story. I have a feeling this will somehow lead to his release from prison.

We don't really know anything about Elsa do we? She doesn't seem to be related to any of the other characters and now - without Piedad and with JJ and her brother in prison - she is totally alone in the world. A really bad scenario for someone so young and vulnerable.

I was wondering (how can I put this delicately) what the heck happened to Maria Sorte's face? At first I thought it was just a weird makeup job but I looked at photos of her on Google images and she was quite attractive at one time. I noticed in the her close-ups that her eyes don't match and in some scenes she looks cross-eyed. Is it too many plastic surgeries or just one really bad plastic surgery or something else?

Are we sure Piedad was Juan Jose's mother and not grandmother? If he is supposed to be in his thirties in this show, that would mean that Piedad had him when she was at least fifty, if not older. I'm thinking that was his grandmother, just because of the age difference. Now it is possible that Juan Jose is supposed to be closer to forty, but that would put him in his late twenties when he went to prison and that just doesn't seem to wash. I can see the guy not knowing how to defend himself against lies if he was twenty or twenty-one but not the late twenties. Most men have gotten pretty wise, so to speak, by that age.

In the scene when JJ is in the prison yard talking about how sick of it he is, he mentions he was a naive 19 year old when everything went down. He also said the incident took place 12 years ago and he's been in jail over 11 years. This makes him 31-32 years old. Elsa was just guessing about Piedad's age, but if she was 70, that just puts her at about 38-40 when she had JJ. I don't think there will be some mystery about JJ's "real" mom amongst all the other mysteries, so we just have to believe the two of them as they call each other mama and hijo.

About the ages--Vivi is correct, he was 19 when the incident took place and he's been in jail for 11 years (plus 1 for prosecution, maybe).

Elsa kept saying about 75--which would have made Piedad between 40 (if we say 70) and 45 (if we see 75).

It's still a little old for a first time mother in Mexico. We haven't heard about any siblings. My guess is that she was his grandmother. There are many cases where the mother of a child dies in childbirth or accident early and the grandmother raises the child. I know a friend who actually did this and he calls her mom and she calls him son.

I'm Newbie for always, from Maryland (I can drop that part).

P.S. David should have known better--especially when Gabbie was still on duty. Good for her. It certainly looked like a seduction scene, alone in a hotel room with a guy you really don't know.

So...today is a holiday, and usually that means holiday schedule on Univision.

But IIRC, it doesn't usually effect the midnight shows.

Just wondering if others are seeing our show broadcast as usual?

Jeri- All the shows are coming on tonight.

Xlnt: I first saw Maria Sorté in Entre el amor y el odio (made in 2002) and she already had an "interesting" face by that time. I think she had too many surgeries. Facelift and botox are the typical diseases of the telenovela actors. (Just look at Gaby Spanic who used to be a beautiful, fragile porcelain doll.) But fortunately Maria's a talented actress and it's easy to forget the weirdness of her face. :)

Anon, thanks for the info. :-)

Aribeth, I thought it must be surgery and botox. Gak! Why do they do that to themselves?? Maria Sorte was gorgeous before and I think she would have aged gracefully. I wonder how many of them have regrets over getting things "fixed"? Honestly, her face (and the face of the lady playing Isabel on STuD) looks like it hurts.

I know this is terrible, but it reminds me of a joke my older brothers used to pull on my sister and I when we were little. One of them would be all sympathetic and ask, "Oh no, does your face hurt?" We'd say "No, why?" And they'd reply, "Well it's killing me!" They were such brats...

Thanks Jeri and Aribeth. I don't know what to.
Novelera - I just can't watch this novela, even though it's supposed to be good since I'm already watching 3 others! Watching this one would eliminate taking showers and brushing my teeth from my schedule. I've already given up housecleaning!

I am just like that. But I really like this show so far. Whats a novela junkie to do?

Lynda, what shows are you watching?

Jeri, I am watching llena de amor, hasta que el dinero nos separe, and soy tu duena.

I did not recognize Maria Sorte here but suspected it was her. I think it is the make up for her character. She looks 'normal' in Fuego en la Sangre which was filmed later than La verdad Oculta.
