La Fea Más Bella #11-12 9/20/10 Fernando Falls in Love With the Business Plan.

Read Chris's original recap. Note, that recap covers Episodes 10 through 13. For Cap 11, start at the paragraph that begins, “Fernando has no recollection of firing Lety.” If you don’t want to read ahead, stop at the paragraph that begins, “The next day Tomás is at the Padillas’ house.” That begins Cap 12.

Capitulo 11
ZOWIE!!! Two spectacular episodes, back to back. Aren't you glad you watched today? I know the Cap 11 scene list is longer than most; this episode was packed!

1. Omar gets through to Fernando. He calls Lety back and flirts back into her good graces.

2. Lola and her ex fight about child support, his gold digger, etc. Lola tells Lety how Jazmín stole Efren.

3. At both restaurants, they talk about Alicia’s night with Omar and the business plan they didn’t create. Ali thinks he’ll be her official novio. Marcia thinks, “Fat chance!” Fernando thinks Omar is a fool for hooking up with an employee.

4. Fernando treats Lety like his hero to compensate for how he treated her earlier. He even switches between usted and tú.

5. Fernando gleefully tells Omar that Marcia agreed to a civil wedding (which allows divorce). He doubts he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.

6. Marcia goes to Fernando’s office to see him fire Lety. Instead he brags about her great work on the business plan.

7. Lety salvages Fernando’s projections, and he nominates her for sainthood. He asks whether Alicia created the committee report. Lety answers that Ali wasn’t able to create the business plan. Fernando has to explain it all to Omar. He’s sure Marcia helped steal the report.

8. Luigi threatens to quit if a commercial isn’t filmed at an expensive location.

9. Olarte reports Fernando’s proposal errors to Ariel. Ariel orders Olarte to help him confront Fernando.

10. Ariel finds Lety sleeping at her desk and he bullies her. Fernando lets her leave early, and she’ll finish the proposal adjustments in the morning.

11. Omar slips out of Alicia’s clutches to accept a better offer.

Read Chris's original recap. Note, that recap covers Episodes 10 through 13. For Cap 12, start at the paragraph that begins, “The next day Tomás is at the Padillas’ house.” If you don’t want to read ahead, stop at the paragraph that begins, “Alicia goes on a dinner date.” That begins Cap 13.

Capitulo 12

1. Lety warns Fernando that his business plan is extremely risky. Fernando tells Lety to attend the meeting against Ariel and Olarte. He needs her and he promises to protect her.

2. Alicia whines to Marcia that Lety is in the meeting and she’s not.

3. Ariel ridicules Fernando for bringing a lowly secretary to the meeting. But Lety steamrolls him and Olarte. After the meeting Fernando and Omar congratulate each other for Lety’s success.

4. Tom lets slip that Lety is paid as a secretary. RoboPop goes to set matters straight. When he hears Fernando bragging about her qualifications, he departs in peace.

5. The cuartel meets and Juana tells fortunes over lunch. She says Lety is in love with someone who will change her life, and she will change his. See the transcript. To throw them off the scent, Lety tells them it’s Tomás.

6. In the executive meeting, Fernando makes Olarte report all his financial activities to Lety. When Marcia objects, he tells her that it’s not healthy to have people who don’t believe in their president. He makes a thinly-veiled threat to fire Olarte.

7. Alicia enlists Olarte’s help to get rid of Lety.

Spanish Lesson: Juana tells Lety’s fortune.
Watch the scene and try to figure out how the words they say match the English translation. Make a list of new vocabulary and phrases you want to learn. I got stuck on a few spots. I'll correct them after I check the CC's. Or I'd welcome help from anyone, on the items marked "?".

Juana: Leticia, you have a novio you haven’t told us about.
L: Ay! No, that’s not true! I don’t have a novio.
J: I see a man who is very important in your life.
L: Well that would be my father.
J: Lety! You’re in love (romantically) with this man! Don’t tell me you fell in love with your father?
L: Noooo! Don’t even joke about that.
J: Well then, there is another man who is very important in your life. A mountain of things with him awaits you. I see a relationship that is very strong. That will be a shock to the very soul. A relationship that will change his life, and yours too.
The cuartel wants details about this man.
J: I only saw that he’s a man. But what a man! "He has his pants in the right place." (Well, he does have a mania for order!) He’s intelligent, rich, and sexy. VERY sexy. Everything is there in Lety’s life. She already likes him a lot. She’s completely stuck in love with him. ("Clavado" - a clavo is a nail, so if something is clavado it's nailed in place and won't move.)
Paula: If you’re so in love, how can you not remember it? Of course you know.
They pester Lety to tell.
Lola: If she doesn’t want to tell, it’s because she’s in love with her boss. "Ponte abusado." [?] Don’t let happen to you what happened to Mireya.
Juana: No, no. Remember that when I told poor Mireya’s future, she asked if she had any chance with Don Fernando. And I clearly told her, it wasn’t going anywhere. In contrast to Lety, the matter is going forward very well. It’s going to change “the” (yours or his) life when you are together.
Sara: Lety! In a little while you’re going to end up capturing Don Fernando!
Lola: When Lety finishes winning Don Fernando, I’m going to win Fernando Colunga!

Juana, after the others have left:
Be careful, Honey. When I say something will change your life, it’s not always for the better. But anyway, this is certain. The person is very important in your life.

Comments:
Two great episodes! Two things I noticed in particular, in Cap 11.

I love how Fernando wields power! He knows he holds the power so doesn’t need to yell and bluster. He talks all sweet and syrupy but his prey can see the sledge hammer hanging over his head. You see it in how he handles Olarte in the meeting. You saw it in how he handled Lopez after Lopez fired Lety. Also Fernando enjoys it so much! Note how much fun he had as he tortured Alicia. The other thing that boy loves is victory. Did you see his face while Marcia realized Lety won? He was puffed up like a rooster.

Thursday I said that what I love about Fea, is that it’s about the process of falling in love, paso a paso. We saw a lot of that in #11. He treats Lety like his hero, he brags to Marcia and struts at Lety’s success over Alicia, he trusts himself into her hands, he’s stunned and excited by what a marvel she is, and he halts Saimon from messing with her and says her glasses are worth more than the whole company. She proved her business genius against Ariel, and she proved her interpersonal genius in how she outsmarted Alicia. An employee with all that, and she is loyal to HIM!

Oh, and one more. Notice that when Lety is helping with his financial plans, Fernando sits close to her and even drifts into her intimate space? IOW business draws them together.

Thanks so much Paula for all of the detail - I know it's prob taking a big chunk of your day. That said, I want to say how much I'm enjoying re-watching the show especially after all of the heavy handedness of STUD. And can I say, Jaime Camil, yes, still tan divino. I know so many of you love Colunga but he's lacking what JC has and that is a wonderful sense of humor. He has the looks the charm AND the sense of humor, which I'm sorry, FC just doesn't have. Just a look with JC can crack you up or break your heart. He's great. I find myself fast forwarding thru the Cuartel scenes however, I really don't need to see those again. But the Lety/Fernando interactions, I just can't get enough of them. Forgot how fast they speak tho. Ay.

In Cap 12, in the meeting, did you notice how Omar placed himself as a human shield in front of Lety? He was doing his part to make her feel more safe.

In the meeting, Lety becomes indispensable to the company. Then she goes immediately to the fortune-telling lunch. i.e. her sudden new value to Fernando is what “released” the next phase, the possibility that he could be her novio. At lunch, right after the predictions, the cuartel suddenly stands apart from Lety. This novela often uses spatial clues, like where someone stands or sits. Her relationship with Fernando puts her in a different class / category from the cuartel. Right after the prediction, she goes into the executive meeting (is this the first time she attends?), and she sits in Marcia’s seat. e.g. she takes Marcia’s place! Marcia sees it, and is she ever pissed!

well, this is a very noticeable difference between Fernando and Armando as characters... Fernando does not take himself halfway as seriously as Armando... he certainly wins in the sense of humor... and ITA that he has better tools to irradiate power and authority... Armando uses mostly his yelling... which he will slowly grow out of during BLF...
But also here in LFMB Fernando has a more noticeable switch right here during this couple episodes than Armando.
Armando does gather a lot of trust in Betty's skills after this 'victory' over Daniel/Ariel. But he does not go as far into 'declaring Betty a saint' as Feernando does here. You can see it when Armando asks Betty where she is going to lunch and Betty says 'the corrientazo' and Armando immediately says 'God bless you!' and poceeds to go out to lunch with Mario/Omar... he is still to be as close to Betty as a person or even as a friend as Fernando is already close to Lety here...
I guess Televisa used the advantage of BLF already being out and they improved/changed some things, like exaggerating the funny stuff to make it more 'family-friendly'. BLF had sense of humor, but it was mostly a side product, brought about (in the characters of Armando, mario and Betty) as very quick punch lines that can be completely missed unless you are watching very carefully or reading the script. Here in LFMB the comedy portion is a bigger piece of the product... and Jaime Camil's sense of humor and ability/timing with comedy fits perfectly into that.

Thanks, Paula for your summary and your insight. I tend to agree with Anonymous. Colunga and Camil are both gorgeous, but Camil shows more humor. Colunga doesn't lack humor, but his personality comes across as "upright", while Camil seems more "bent", if those terms make sense. Camil has a twinkle in his eyes which combines beautifully with Angelica Vale's comedic talents. This TN has a wonderful combination of comedy and emotional/romantic depth. As Donkey told Shrek, it has layers. The comic touches and talent are seen in the entire cast, reinforcing the main story line.
La Paloma

Forgot to mention--Lety's chair ballet in her office, celebrating a tender moment with Fernando--both lyrical and hilarious!
La Paloma

Thanks Paula and Chris. Paula you cleared up a big question for me. I could never figure out why it was such a big deal to be married in the church as opposed to a civil marriage. I never thought about the divorce aspect. Thanks for that information. Also for the Spanish lesson.

Wow - great comments! Thank you again, Paula for everything.

I just wish that they (or Angelica) hadn't added ticks to Betty/Letty.

For me, Colunga is good-looking, and apparently a nice guy in real life, but not the greatest actor. Jaime Camil I think is terrific. And of course tan divino!

right after the predictions, the cuartel suddenly stands apart from Lety. This novela often uses spatial clues...
so very true, great point, paula! this is very noticeable in both BLF and LFMB. and is not limited to the relationship Lety/cuartel.

Thank you, everyone. I fixed the "Spanish Lesson." There was just one thing I still can't figure out. "Ponte abusado." Marta?

Paloma, ITA. Layers and layers. Gaitán's plot and character development are phenomenal in this show.

Pata, so it would seem, if Fernando wants a civil wedding, he more-or-less expects to divorce. And Marcia willingly agrees to it.

Marta, here is another of the spatial things. When Lety is helping with his financial plans, Fernando sits close to her and even drifts into her intimate space. IOW business draws them together.

Already they can read each other. Already they are tuned in to each other.
* A. When Lety shirks the business plan to Alicia, Fernando figures out that it’s because Alicia didn’t do the committee report.
* B. Lety wrote the business plan without being asked.
* C. Fernando was furious when he thought she didn’t create it, since she should’ve expected it.
* D. When Lety isn’t willing to say that Alicia stole her report, Fernando concludes that Marcia threatened her.
* E. Lety is afraid of Marcia’s revenge because Fernando figured out Alicia’s plot. But Fernando only torments Alicia (to remind her of his power), so Lety’s head is safe from Marcia.

Thank you Paula, I have not got to watch yet and am traveling tomorrow, but great comments!

I love JC in this role!

A whole lot of patron/client situations in today's caps. Remember, a client's primary job is to support the patron. A patron's primary jobs are to protect and provide for the client.

1. Fernando fired Lety because he thought she didn't support him by making the business plan.

2. Lety stayed up all night to produce the business plan, what her patron needed most. In response, Fernando swore to protect her from Ariel "over my dead body." Her huge support made him commit to a very strong patron bond.

3. Olarte should've been Fernando's client. Not only did not support Fernando, he supported his enemy instead. So Fernando withdrew Olarte's duties (he stopped providing for his non-client).

4. So Olarte ran to Ariel, his defacto patron. Olarte said now Fernando is his enemy (iow, 'protect me, Ariel!'). But Ariel's answer? "You should worry instead about Lety." iow 'you're on your own, Tutz!' Olarte supported Ariel, but Ariel refused to protect him.

These were very enjoyable episodes indeed. Aside from the scene where Lety steamrolls Ariel and Olarte I think my favorite moment was when Fernando and Omar had their Lety sandwich hug. So cute! She was in the exact position that practically every woman in the office dreamt of. I also liked the conclusion where Lety was "chair dancing" with her little photo of Fernando. Angelica Vale is wonderful with physical comedy in my opinion.

Thanks again to Chris and Paula for the great recap and redux. So far I enjoyed tonight's conversation lesson the best of all, fun stuff.

Paula, I have a question. Was that Heidi in the red wig or another model/actress?

Sylvia, you're right! I missed that. Sure enough, just before the staff lady brushes her hair, we see Heidi's distinctive smile. Also she moves like Heidi. Good catch! I'm watching ahead, and I saw a model in 16 or 17 that might've been Heidi. I'll watch carefully when we get there. Now I wonder; will she makes cameos throughout the show?

One of my favorite shots, right after Fernando tortures Alicia, he does that great imitation of Luigi. What a crack-up!

It was a thing of beauty, watch Lety in the boardroom with Ariel and Olarte. She cleaned their clocks.

That Olarte would be dumb enough to be manipulated by Alicia makes you wonder how he rose to such a high position in the organization to begin with.

And I love how Marcia ends up sitting not just one, but TWO seats away from her usual spot at Fernando's side. Heh.

aguzada (sharp, smart)
ponte aguzada! means 'get smart'

if juana said in the end 'les va a cambiar la vida...' she meant both their (Fer and Lety) lives. If she said 'te va a cambiar la vida' she means Lety's.

yes these episodes were great... I loved where Jaime throws his own wording here and there like when he tells Marcia and Alicia that Lety did the report and Alicia gives Omar a killer stare before she leaves, Jaime throws in an 'Epale!' which is basically 'whoa!', before he tells Omar if looks could kill he would already be down and out.

regarding when Juana told Lety 'te va a calambrar hasta el alma'... calambres are cramps, like when you get cramps in the legs, feet or hands when you don't move them for a while.

Fernando sits close to her and even drifts into her intimate space.
absolutely! and even one time he looks at her and catches himself leaning really close to her (within a few inches) and jumps back and moves at least 1 foot further away than he was.

Thank you, Marta! What Juana said was, "Va a cambiar la vida cuando estén juntos." I think they made it deliberately vague. I'll fix the others later today; no time right now.

Oh, and one more. Juana told Lety the matter is going forward, "y muy requete bien." What is requete? I couldn't find it.

I loved this. At the beginning of Cap 11, he didn't even remember that he fired her. That's how insignificant she was to him. But an hour later, she steps away to get something from her office, and he panics because she's not there. He needs her at his side.

I loved how Erasmo leaned to the conference room door and heard exactly when Fernando asks Lety to introduce herself to Ariel, and Erasmo begins to stick out a finger for each degree she lists, then he hears Fernando ask Lety not to be so modest and tells Ariel all the other things that Lety can do (financial analysis, marketing analysis, even some stock market work)... and Erasmo used the other hand's fingers to count those... Hilarious!! then he just waltzes out telling Saimon he has heard enough, gets outside and tells Julieta that he was very pleased to hear Fernando praise Lety like that... (this was exactly the part of the meeting he got to hear... nothing more...)
and outside tells Tomas that it was not a funny joke saying Lety is a 'secretary'... ( he truly believes tomas was joking about that...)

requete bien means 'super good', it is basically an adverb that exaggerates the next word next to it. like requete alto = super/really high, requete profundo = super/really deep, etc...

someone who 'tiene los pantalones bien puestos en su sitio' (has his pants very secure in their right place) usually means someone who is very sure of himself and knows exactly where he is and where he wants to be.

i had my daughter check on it at home and Juana said 'le va a cambiar la vida cuando esten juntos'... the word 'le' here makes me interpret it as 'life is going to change for (the both of you) when you are together'. If she meant Lety she would say 'te', 'le' refers to a Usted (which Juana would never refer to Lety as Ud) or a 'you all' or 'them all'

Paula, thanks for the summary and lesson, and Martaivett, thanks for the vocabulary clarifications. This is very educational.

I think it's funny how Fernando is starting to adopt Lety's mannerisms. Sometimes he does it deliberately, like when she was trying to talk to him and her eyes were twitchy, and he made an exaggerated twitchy face back and said, "What?" But other times it seems unintentional.

I enjoy the scenes with Omar and Fernando even more than scenes with Lety. They are so funny. Fernando/JC has the BEST bemused/teasing facial expression. His mirth is contagious.

Does anyone know what the heck is going on with afternoon scheduling? According to my program guide, Camaleones is not running at all this week, and they are starting Mar de Amor in its place. This is annoying because I LOVE Camaleones and it's only midway through the series. But then next week the schedule says Camaleones is back and Mar de Amor is nowhere to be found. WHY would they do this? Why not just show only an hour per day or LFMB, and start Mar de Amor in the leftover hour?
