El Clon Monday October 25: Summary for Discussion
¡Voy a inhalar hasta que me muera!
(I’m going to inhale until I die!)
But Marisa makes a getaway in her red convertible. She passes a street person who is digging through some trash. Marisa stops the car, gets out and approaches the woman. She calls out: Señora… ¿Mamá? Mamá? [What the…?] The woman disappears into the night.
Who taught Rania to dance? Elaine on Seinfeld? Ni modo. She is dancing for Said and even if he doesn’t seem mad with desire, at least he is smiling politely. Jadiya watches with her friends. She tells them she’s going to dance the way her mother taught her and they are to applaud her when she does. Jadiya then takes Rania’s place in front of her father and dances as her friends clap appreciatively; and Rania goes sulking to Amina.
Said has to leave for a ‘business’ appointment. No sooner is he out the door than Rania screams ‘mucosa envidiosa’ (jealous brat) and sets upon Jadiya so aggressively that Amina has to hold her back. Jadiya’s friends look on in horror, but Jadiya smiles to herself. Mission accomplished.
Lucía intercepts Consuelo in her attempted nocturnal escape from the del Valle house. Leaving like that makes her look guilty, Lucía tells her. Unless maybe Consuelo is willing to do her a favor and be her spy in the House of sKanks…
Leo’s cell phone rings as he and Roberto are leaving the hearing. It’s Malicia. She invites him to Salamandra for a drink. He accepts and also agrees to receive her in his office the following day.
At Salamandra, Diana has overheard Malicia’s invitation and now warns her:
Si fuera tú, no me metería con Leonardo Ferrer. Mira, Cristina no es Clara, Alicia.
(If I were you, I wouldn’t mess with LF. Look, Cristina isn’t Clara, A.)
Butt out, says the Malicious one, or you’ll end up cleaning bathrooms.
Leo asks Cris to join him but she’s tired and has a headache so she begs off. But after Leo and Roberto leave, she tries to call Leo and gets his voicemail. She has a feeling… So she and Vicki decide to follow the men.
Malicia greets Leo and Roberto ever so graciously as soon as they arrive at Salamandra.
Dora is at home telling Estela about Daniel’s testimony:
¡Hubieras visto a Daniel! Le dijo al juez que yo era su madre y muy orgulloso!
(You should have seen Daniel! He told the judge that I was his mother – and he was very proud to say it.)
Lucas shows up at their apartment looking for Jade.
Another Ferrer is out paying a surprise visit. Marisa comes calling at Gloria’s looking for Alejandro. Gloria isn’t happy but she does have Ramón escort Marisa to Alej’s room.
Dora tells Lucas that Jade and Daniel have gone out and she doesn’t know where.
But we do. They are in TOPIM (the only park in Miami) and Jade, in a modest purple hippie dress, is dancing for Daniel.
Back at Gloria’s, Alej has just arranged to meet up with Diana when Ramón arrives with Marisa. She is there to ask him to come back to Natalia. She knows she was unfair, she did things she’s not proud of, and she is ashamed of the necklace incident. She was wrong about him and now she is asking forgiveness. But everything was done for her daughter’s sake, to protect her.
Now the situation is out of control and Marisa needs Alej’s help. Nati is killing herself and killing her baby too. But she’ll listen to him. She loves him.
Alej interjects:
No sé si lo sepa, el hijo que está esperando Natalia no es mío.
(I don’t know if you know, the baby N is expecting isn’t mine.)
No, Marisa didn’t know. She is momentarily taken aback but still pleads with Alej to come back to Natalia.
Ramón rushes back to Gloria and fills her in on the conversation. Gloria runs up to Alej’s room and tells him he’d be nuts to go back and make the same mistake all over. Marisa leaves humbly, saying she understands.
When Alej and Gloria are alone, he says:
¿Qué quieres que haga? Yo sé que no debería pero la amo demasiado.
(What do you want me to do? I know I shouldn’t, but I love her so much. literally: too much)
Marisa gets back home only to learn from Rosa that Natalia has, once again, been kidnaped. (La tiene secuestrada de nuevo.) All Rosa knows is that a rude, angry guy has been calling every half hour. They have her somewhere downtown. Marisa tries to reach Leo and Lucas but they both have their phones off.
We see Alej in his room. He appears to have made a decision. He walks out purposefully and shuts the door behind him. [But what is that thing in his room?]
Said is at Salamandra scanning the crowd. [He and Marisa were supposed to get together but they both seem to have forgotten about it.]
As Malicia serves drinks to Roberto and Leo, Leo asks her what she wanted to talk to him about. She tells him it’s something he’ll like, but they should talk in a quieter place. His office tomorrow.
Alej’s decision has taken him back to the Casa Ferrer. Rosa and Marisa bring him up to speed on Nati’s situation. Since no one knows where she is, he’ll look in the Old Scary Drug Place. Marisa gives him her car keys and he sets out to rescue the woman he loves.
And at Salamandra, Said at last gives Zein his answer: Jade is free. (libre, folks, not gratis. Anything but gratis.)
Cris and Vicki enter the club. Mira con quién está Leo (Look who Leo’s with) observes Vicki tartly. Malicia takes Cris aside. She doesn’t want any misunderstandings, she says. She called Leo because Zein wants to make a surprise party for him. Malicia thinks it’s Zein’s way of making things right with Cris (reivindicar contigo) Cris nods and smiles. [There is no thought bubble, but if there were, it would be: ¡Me las va a pagar!]
Diana observes to Pablo that Alej is taking a long time getting to the club. Then Pablo gets a call from Alej. We hear him say: Where are you? And then: ¿Otra vez, brother? (Again?) Diana snatches the phone. Alej tells her somewhat cryptically that he has a problem and they’ll talk tomorrow. Then he hangs up leaving Diana feeling uneasy.
Clara is at home regaling Caro with the story of sadsack Escobar showing up with his flowers and wine and finding her with Rogelio. When Caro asks how he reacted (¿y qué cara puso?) (literally, what face did he put on?), Clara says:
Bueno, fue una cara como entre estreñido y tener un callo en el pie y que se lo estén pisando.
(Well it was an expression somewhere between constipated and having a callus on your foot and you’re walking on it.)
Rogelio has taken the apartment papers home to analyze them point by point.
This smiling conversation is cut short by an ominous phone call. Says Clara:
¡A Fernando se lo llevaron preso por droga!
(Someone’s holding Fernando, it’s something to do with drugs).
Caro takes the phone and takes charge.
Albieri (you remember Albieri? Little guy, huge ego?) comes home to an empty house. He calls Anita but she says Luisa’s not with her.
Ah, but she is. Poor Albieri, she says to Luisa. He is beside himself (desesperado) looking for you. Wait until I take my revenge, answers Luisa. Then he’ll know what desperate feels like.
Lucas comes upon Daniel and Jade (her face attractively flushed from the dance) in the park. Lucas has come to claim Jade but Daniel is not about to give her up. You shut up, says Lucas. Jade – come with me! Daniel blocks his way, Lucas is prepared to fight for his story, his life, his woman; he punches Daniel in the face and the fight is on. Jade is appalled by their behavior and runs away.
Since Lucas hasn’t spent a lot of time working out with Pablo and the guys in the gym, it’s no surprise that his twenty-year-old counterpart is the one who is ultimately left standing.
There follows a sort of post-combatal truce (If these guys were smokers, they’d be lighting up right now):
Daniel: How would you feel if you were a copy of someone?
Lucas: It’s better than being the leavings (desperdicio) of someone else. I was always an inferior copy, first of Diego, then of you.
Daniel looks thoughtful. Did you feel like that when you were my age? he asks. Yes, he did. And what did you do when you felt that way? Lucas tells him: I felt like escaping, running away. I used to cry. And I wanted to die.
At Casa Ferrer, Marisa takes the call from the drug guy: Yes, I know where that is, she says and sets out alone, despite Rosa’s urging her to wait for help.
The Zombie trio – Fernando, Natalia and Paula – are being held together in a New but equally Scary Drug Place. Natalia is feeling some pains in her belly. She’s afraid she’s going into labor and she begs the drug guys to let her go.
Paula tries to bargain for her freedom by offering to sell ectasy to school kids – you know how much kids love it, she says.
Outside the New Scary Drug Place, Marisa – in her usual skintight, low-cut, miniskirted dress – asks the first scuzzball she meets where she can find El Perro (the dog).
It appears that Clara has already found the hound. She is sitting opposite him, desperately trying to buy time because she doesn’t have enough money to pay off Fernando’s drug debt in exchange for his freedom. El Perro tells her she has 24 hours or her Playboycito of a son will die.
Marisa is led inside and quickly arranges to pay off Fernando and Natalia’s debts.
Fernando and Natalia are set free. Paula thinks she’s included in the deal, but she discovers that her ransom hasn’t been paid. Her captor has other plans for her. [Fortunately, with the Ectasy for Kiddies remark, the writers have inoculated us against feeling sorry for Paula. And her friends don’t even seem to notice they are leaving her behind.]
Alej arrives at Casa Ferrer after an unsuccessful search. If anything happens to Natalia, he says, he’ll never forgive himself.
Clara takes Fernando home. They’d have killed you if it weren’t for Marisa she tells him. He says he saw his band play and the guy who replaced him is good. Not better than you, says Clara.
Natalia and Marisa arrive at Casa Ferrer. At this point the pains are so bad, Nati can barely walk down the stairs. She sees Alej and tells him to go away, that it isn’t his baby. If it’s your baby, it’s mine too, he tells her, no matter who is the father. He says:
No te voy a dejar. Nunca más te voy a dejar.
(I’m not leaving you. I’ll never leave you again.)
Help me, mama, Nati pleads to Marisa. I don’t want to lose my baby.
Marisa takes charge. She tells Rosa to notify Leo and Lucas. Natalia is going to the clinic.
Back in the barrio, Gloria pumps Ramón for information on Alej’s whereabouts and, as usual, when he tells her (He went looking for Natalia), she scolds him for being a gossip.
Across the street Gloria is attracting some eyeball action. As the offending Abdul says to the equally guilty Mohamed:
El haram entra por los ojos cuando el hombre está descuidado.
(Sin enters through the eyes when a man is careless.)
When Dora goes to Cris’s bar to ask Miguel to testify at the paternity hearing – he needs to confirm that he saw her when she was pregnant – he tells her she can count on him for anything.
The mood in the del Valle house is anything but mellow these days. Lucía is downright testy and explodes when Andrea mentions Roberto’s audiencia de paternidad. Even though the hearing is closed and Lucía will be denied entry, she insists on going with Roberto. She has no intention of leaving him alone with the sKanks.
Andrea gets a call from Alej. The baby is 7 months along and anything could happen, he says. She heads off to the hospital.
Natalia tells Alej that the baby is really his. She lied to him after seeing him with Diana. If she had been willing to give up drugs, he would never have left her, he tells her. Yes, she agrees, she destoyed everything. But we’ll rebuild it, Alej tells her.
Lucas has been waiting outside Dora’s apartment all night for a chance to talk to Jade. Just as Dora comes out and tells him that Jade is inside – she was asleep when Dora left – Lucas gets a call informing him that Natalia is in labor. He leaves in a hurry.
In the apartment, Jade tells Estela and Dora about last night’s fight and Dora rushes to check on Daniel.
The clan is gathering at the hospital. Natalia is being wheeled on a stretcher to the delivery room while Marisa, Lucas, Enrique, Rosa, Alejandro and Andrea wait.
We hear a few screams, a few grunts and then we realize we are in the presence of a miracle: from those skinny loins, instead of a scrawny 7-month premie crack baby, we see emerge a large, wide-eyed three-month-old infant that may just weigh more than Natalia. But we don’t hear the baby cry. Says Natalia:
¡Quiero ver a mi hijo! ¿Por qué no llora mi hijo?
(I want to see my baby! Why isn’t my baby crying?
Credits roll.

I was thinking the same when i saw that baby how many months i was wondering it was?
Was it me but Cris was definitely giving Malicia the stink eye and a look that said b*tch don't mess with my man look.
I love how Diana called it and said it to the nasty rat fink Cris is not Clara.
Jadiya is a brat but i have a feeling Said isn't going to want his daughter exposed to that type of nastiness.
Can someone call Horatio and his crew from CSI Miami so they clean up these drug dens popping up all over the place in this novela.
Marisa it took you the last week of this novela to realize you were awful to Alej.?
I still say that Nati and Fernando better not get off lightly from their robbery escapades.
Uh Oh Albieri now you have vengeful scorned obsessed woman on your hands who wants to make you pay. Guess she'll be the one to exposes your cloning.
I too wondered about the size and seeming good health of Natalia's premie crack baby. I also scratched my head (oops, I must have caught Daniel's cooties) over the fight in TOPIM. Yes, I suppose Daniel prevailed, but I'd have expected a healthy 20-year-old to have a much easier time against someone twice his age whose main form of exercise seems to be getting out of bed in the morning.
And what are we to make of the episode between Marisa and "mamá," a woman Marisa glimpsed only from behind and whom presumably she hadn't seen in MANY years? Is this simply supposed to be another example of Writers' Shorthand, like Paula's remark about selling ecstasy tells us we don't have to feel sorry for her? In Marisa's case, the shorthand presumably says "see, she has a history that helps explain why she's the seemingly egocentric, materialistic, insensitive person we've seen throughout the TN." Blech. I think the writers got their pages horribly mixed up. This scene should have come MONTHS ago. Or have the writers simply lost sight of the fact that we're in the Ultima Semana? (Or, even worse, perhaps we're not?)
Oh well, enough ranting. Thanks again for this wonderful recap!
Yes, what is the deal with Marisa and her mother? Will she lower herself to help the woman?
I know that Jadiya is a brat but she sure knows how to push Raina buttons and it is fun to watch. Raina can't be very smart especially since she had to settle for being a 2nd wife in the beginning.
I expected more a showdown from Cris. Well, maybe tonight.
Rosemary
I guess the writer thinks that if it works to do something once, then why not do it again. Hence Nati gets pregnant once, so why not do it again. The zombie teens get held for ransom by a scary drug guy in a scary drug place, so let's do it again. These drug people are very honorable. They release their victims promptly upon payment of the drug tab and ignore the skimpily dressed, obviously rich woman who goes there alone in an expensive car!!
And Nati's baby!! Why show a baby at all? Couldn't you have the doctors looking in horror at something or working frantically on something unseen but to show a 3-month old, obviously healthy baby is bizarre!!
And we have Marisa redeemed as an understanding mom and, perhaps, a forgiving daughter (???). So will we want Lucas to stay with her now? No, no, no, I say. Lucas and Jade MUST end up together! But where does Marisa go?
Guess all the odds and ends will be taken care of. Hope Malicia doesn't get whitewashed, too. We've gotta have at least on unrepentent baddie besides Albieri.
And Lucia might turn him into a penitent!
And finally, what will happen to poor Daniel. Can a human clone be allowed to survive?
Whatever happens, we know our wonderful recappers will keep us truly and entertainingly informed. Thanks so much NovelaMaven and Jean.
I'll truly miss this telenovela and this particular set of recappers and responders to them. I'm not looking forward to not looking forward to another week of El Clon. Lois
Zein - She could start life anew with Zein and forget about Lucas and Daniel (her memory of Lucas). She could stay in Miami living comfortably with a good-looking man with money. She may not be in love with him but neither was she in love with Said and she lived with him for 20 years. I guess she can get used to Zein and at least she won't be alone. Lucas would be hurt by this but he perhaps would concede the loss and move on. This situation could also possibly open a path of reconciliation between Lucas and Marisa.
Daniel - She could live her fairytale by way of Daniel but would probably feel guilty of abandoning the original Lucas with the new Lucas. I don't think Jade would do that to Lucas. Besides, there wouldn't be any economic imperative in living with Daniel. Yet, it may be difficult at first but Daniel is an able-bodied young man who can find work and grow from there.
Lucas - The unlikeliest of her options simply because of his problem with Natalia. There is no certainty with him. Apparently it isn't acceptable for her to live with Lucas while he remains attentive to his daughter. She's uncomfortable with the idea of living with Lucas while he remains close to Marisa. She doesn't want to feel like the other woman. So for Jade it's all or nothing which makes this option unlikely because Lucas would not leave Natalia's side.
None of the above - She could stay alone, be independent for a while, learn to fend for herself and then perhaps think about a relationship at some point.
Well, it would seem that out of the four options, Zein would be the best bet if she doesn't want to stay alone.
What do you think?
I'm with you about Marisa, Blu. Better late (ultima semana) than never, I suppose?
Just hoping well-deserved anvils drop this week. They just have to! Que se caen!
Yes, it was a weird episode.
Juanita,
I was surprised by Marisa and Mamá scene. Was it really her mother combing through the trash? Who knows? Up to now we've only seen her in Marisa's memory flashbacks triggered by Natalia's detox: a crazed woman in the throes of drugs or illness, held down on a hospital bed, calling Marisa's name as little girl Marisa crouches in terror outside the room.
In any case, Marisa has earned telesalvation by confessing her sins and asking forgiveness.
It is much harder to believe in Natalia's epiphany. (I found myself hoping that the hospital wouldn't leave any expensive equipment lying around.)
Blu, I'm with you about holding Nati and Fer accountable for what they've done.
Yes, Jean, there must be a Big Book of Telenovela Rules that frowns on abduction of the same character -- with the same motive -- twice in one novela.
Rosemary, after all the teasers, I do hope we get to see the Cris take out Malicia in one round!
Lois, I agree about Lucas and Jade. They HAVE TO end up together. I said before that maybe part of Marisa's repentance will involve letting Lucas go with her blessings.
This one was a real head-scratcher, like Juanita said. Marisa apparently can recognize her mother, who now looks totally different, in the dark, from behind. Jadiya's friends get a surreal show of her family life, and nobody thinks it's inappropriate. Helpless Lucía seems to be planning a murderous rampage. Several phones mysteriously don't work. Dora and Estela are fending off Jade's suitors. Alejo's bookshelf returns from the fourth dimension, all jumbled up. And to top it all off, Nati's wacky birth scene, which made me feel like I'm watching Star Trek or something: since the baby was conceived in a time warp, after being in the oven for only seven months, it was born already three months old (not to mention clean and alert). I'm guessing it dies from the shock of entering the normal timeline.
By the way, was Said at Salamandra to meet Marisa, only running into Zein by chance?
Was Cris fooled by Malicia's story? I couldn't tell. Remember that her persuasive powers are purely fictional: she is convincing in ways she wouldn't be in real life.
The CC3 captions have been iffy lately. Last night they said Fernando was arrested, rather than held by drug dealers. I think the captioner lost interest.
I'm happy we finally got a clone fight, and that they are now buds again. They have so much in common. The next thing I want to see is Albieri attempting to take care of himself in Luisa's absence, being unable to fathom laundry and wondering where cake comes from.
Juanita: "writer's shorthand" sounds about right. They gave up on coherent, well-paced storytelling months ago and have been stuck on stock scenes and sudden revelations. The writing really doesn't do justice to the production and acting talent on this show. Que pena. At least we still have good writing here on the blog! :)
Luke, How great that you're back for this última semana! I've missed your astute and funny comments. A few thoughts:
"Alejo's bookshelf returns from the fourth dimension, all jumbled up" Really? Is that what that thing was?
"By the way, was Said at Salamandra to meet Marisa, only running into Zein by chance?"
I don't think so. They arranged to meet at their usual place which seems to be a quiet, expensive restaurant, not noisy Salamandra where they'll be interrupted by lots of people. Besides, even if Marisa no longer feels the need to hide their relationship, Said isn't proud of it and isn't looking for witnesses.
"Was Cris fooled by Malicia's story? I couldn't tell." Let's hope not. When Cris smiles, it is usually a radiant, whole body kind of thing. But her smile to Malicia was very guarded. Oh well, we'll find out soon enough!
Thanks for the laughs, your description of the birth scene was too too funny!
I'm still wibble-wobbling over whether the writers will allow Nati to live...
My guess is now that she will live, but apparently will not be called on to pay for her crimes.
How in the Hay are they going to wrap up all the lose ends in 3 days? Just wrapping up Dona Nazira alone would be a whole episode!
Joan
Really enjoyed your wonderfully entertaining recap of last night's episode. The episode itself seemed really surreal to me. Maybe they fired the original writers and/or director because these last few weeks have been very disjointed.
I belong to the Jade and Lucas camp. The protagonists have to live "happily ever after", unless there is something really morally wrong with one of them as in "Rubi".
It does seem that they want to rob us of some anvils, but I must have one on Malicia, Albieri, and the skanks.
As for your and Jean's "absurd undertaking", I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I can only imagine the time and effort you have both dedicated to us. Thank you.
Prinny
Most of what stood out for me has already been mentioned, especially the Super-Size baby that came out of that tiny body. Loved that you said it just might weigh more than Nati. Also loved the Elaine reference. How true! Rania looked like a moving sack of potatoes.
I know it won't happen, but I'd like to see Said and Marisa together. Mostly just to drive Rania crazy. Said just tolerates Rania. In the past, he's had some passion at least for Marisa.
Thanks for clearing up that the thugs had a new drug hideout. I couldn't figure out where Alejo went and why Marisa had to go there alone. She certainly did stand out from her surroundings in the drug lair!
I was pretty frustrated that they left us hanging about Cris' reaction to Malicia's "honor Leo" plan, which she tried to pass off as Zein's idea. She did smile, so I'm not sure she's onto Malicia yet, even after all of Anita's warnings.
Something has to give with Jadiya and Rania. This situation is not sustainable. And I don't understand why Jadiya doesn't calmly and rationally explain how much Rania dislikes her.
You know three hours of onstage time is a loooong time. Think of the last film or play you saw and how much narrative punch can be packed into a timeframe like that.
I just hope they've brought in their A-team of writers and production people for these final episodes. It would be nice to leave this story with a taste of the initial quality that drew us to it in the first place.
I was in love with this novela in the beginning. But for too long now I've been carried along on a wave of "When good novelas make bad choices".
I can't imagine how all the loose ends are going to come together having only a few days til the end.
I will be so pissed off if Chris doesn't give Malicia a dose of her own medicine. And I hope she gets fired and walks away with her head hanging down. Ugh, I hate her!!!!
Ann-NYC
Anybody want to play "threadcount"? That's where we count how many plot threads are still dangling and guess which ones will be tied up---I'm sure not all of them will be. Here are a couple obvious ones:
1. Malicia manipulated and wronged half the cast. Will she pay for it?
2. Is Miami big enough for both Lucas and Daniel?
And a few we haven't heard about lately:
3. Will the hereditary mole Lucas and Daniel share become cancerous?
4. Alejandro has been pursuing ultimate fighting. Will he be successful?
5. Dora went to the doctor for abdominal pains. What, if anything, is wrong with her?
6. The zombie crew robbed a store at gunpoint. Will they be caught and prosecuted?
I expect 1, 2, and maybe 3 and 4 will be resolved. I doubt 5 and 6 will.
By the way, maybe this was discussed while I was gone, but what the heck is Carolina's job? I thought she was Lucas's secretary, in which case she and Clara switched jobs. But she acted like she didn't know the details of Clara's new job, and she has also been mediating between Clara and the police, as if she were a lawyer.
Although she's done nothing except console Clara and fuss about Enrique's chemical dependency, Carolina appears to be a lawyer. It was revealed a couple of episodes ago that that is her job.
The really confusing thing to me is that being Lucas' secretary is a demotion, although her pay will remain the same. In every company in which I've worked the person who sat at the front desk and answered the phone was the receptionist, usually on the young side, and low person on the totem pole.
Of course, as in all TNs, nobody ever does any real work.
