La Verdad Oculta #24: The Judas Kiss; aka The Roberto Handshake
Leonardo is finally shown in his actual office at the AFI (FBI) headquarters, where Ramón brings him news of the diamond theft in Los Angeles -- and of the jail break. Ramón suggests a fatigued-looking Leonardo could retire to his ranch; why not -- Leonardo is wealthy, and he could make Ramón his foreman, Ramón points out.
Leonardo remains silent and proceeds to the smuggling-truck topic, where Ramón reports the witnesses fingered the one-eyed man again. At the condo, an irritated Adolfo makes plans for Félix to escape to the beach house for a while to avoid compromising Adolfo.
At the club, Julieta tries to convince Gabriela to accept Carlos; but Gabriela's interested in neither him nor David: they have too much money and can't be serious minded. Meanwhile, David sits impatiently in a Manzanillo disco with whining Bertha, wishing he were working, as he originally intended.
Carlos tries to make time with Gabriela at work, but Yolanda interrupts with a visit. In fact, though, Carlos becomes a little misty when Yolanda reveals she loves him -- as if -- he were her real son. So he asks Yolanda the favor of setting up a meeting at her place between Gabriela and him. He's more and more fascinated by her.
At Santiago's, unhappily mulling over the blue clubs ring, he flashes back to his 1980's vapid good-time girl, Márta, who didn't quite understand her family obligations in favor of free love. The doorbell rings, shattering the reverie; and it's Leonardo, who announces his serious intentions toward Gabriela.
At Juan José's, Elsa is teaching Caramelo to read when suddenly there's a huge crash from the kitchen pit and clouds of black dirt. Juan José shouts that there's a cavern opened up down there. And even more shockingly, in a moment through the hole deep below appears a woman in a lighted hard hat.
Alejandra's hat spotlights Juan José's amazed face -- and their instant mutual intrigue. They're both suspicious and defensive at the same time. Alejandra claims to be contracted to the city and conspiratorially confides that if he's looking for well water, she won't turn him in. As she leaves, a grin spreads across her face; while Juan José remains pole axed.
Adolfo takes Félix to the club office for some traveling cash, but there's a problem: Leonardo shows up, and Yolanda and Félix try to get out of his way. Adolfo miffs clueless Carlos, throwing him out of the office so Félix can hide out.
When Adolfo learns Leonardo came to pick up the girls, he dismisses them early to get rid of Leonardo. But before he exits, Leonardo stuns Adolfo, asking whether he's heard of Santiago Guzman. Adolfo nervously remains silent.
Later at the condo, Adolfo worriedly admits, to Yolanda's despair, that Leonardo must be probing into his past. If he finds Santiago and reopens the case, Santiago might seek out Mario in his own defense -- and learn Adolfo's been blackmailing him.
At Elsa's, Juan José adds insult to injury by explaining away the kiss as excitement of the moment, discovering Gregorio's treasure well. But they get happier thinking about all the gold; and with the help of her calculator, Elsa thrills herself and Juan José figuring the likely amount at more than $15 million dollars!
Back at Adolfo's, when Yolanda points out Leonardo visits the girls at home, Adolfo realizes then it must be that Leonardo found out about the diamond shoes! When he blames Carlos, Yolanda insists it was Adolfo's fault for involving innocent people.
Just then Carlos enters, furious that Adolfo went over his head and dismissed the waitresses early. That's his job! They got busy and couldn't cover it. Adolfo blows him off and exits, and Yolanda further disappoints by refusing to help Carlos meet with Gabriela. She's a good girl and not for him.
At Gabriela's, Julieta is just hoping Leonardo picks them up every night so they can get off early all the time, when groggy Santiago emerges in pajamas and figures Adolfo knows Leonardo's a cop.
He becomes very heated to hear Gabriela had dinner with Carlos without asking permission first. She reveals sadly that David's not as sincere as she thought, and her dad insists neither one of them is right for her.
When Elsa visits the architect studio to collect a payment, Mina learns from her without letting on that Roberto lied about the house sale to Alejandra and in addition took Carlos in with him as a buying partner. Mina's curious whether Juan José could use some renovation work, but Elsa demurs and claims not to know.
David, Bertha and Roberto arrive home from Manzanillo; and when suffering Mario makes a brave show and emerges to greet them, Roberto shakes his hand -- privately thinking darkly how it's just too bad he's going to have to kill the poor guy.

Adorable "meet cute" of Juan Jose and Alejandra in the cave. I've already warmed up to them as a couple. I feel a twinge of guilt about Elsa, but as they say "these two are destined for each other."
Didn't expect those shoes to turn up so quickly. Hmmm, maybe Marcos is going to get rich too. Glad for Marco's girlfriend's sake that the shoes have no foul stench from being in the dumpster all that time. :>
pirate babe, I'm assuming the murder plot will effect Santiago, playing Mario. Poor Santiago; he's had boatloads of trouble in his life.
The real Mario will be off to Switzerland soon; he's getting really sick. I hope they have some miracle cure for him there.
Niece, aw, I know where you've been! You've been a fan of "The Holiday," haven't you? (Meet cute.) I like that movie.
So, did anybody besides me notice that until today, Leonardo was never in the AFI office? Ramón was always meeting him in his home office.
I kind of wondered if they didn't have enough budget for the set or something. It occurred to me that they just got rid of the prison set, so maybe they have the budget for the AFI set now or something.
Roberto is beginning to scare me. The man is two inches away from a journey of no return, the dark side. Poor Mario,he was freaked out as well.

Oh, Marta is not what I expected would be the love of Santiago and Mario's lives. But I guess her beauty blinded these men to her less than desirable qualities among them what looked like loud gum chewing and hair twirling. Gabi closely resembles her mom in looks but definitely not in personality.
I love that Leo is causing Adolfo great angst.

There has been one short scene in the office in episode 10.

I love the first meeting of Alejanda and JJ, and also like the fact that Marta wasn't a saint at all.
I love this NT, too. And I'm afraid Roberto was just awaiting his true calling; he has a talent for the dark side, IMO.
GinCA, those two were funny; each one of them demanded to know what the other was doing there and postured like they didn't have to answer questions themselves.
Alejandra lied that they were being contracted by the city, and Juan José let her think he was digging for water.
I liked her conspiratorial approach when the co-worker went away. She came close and said, like, "...so you're digging in an old well, aren't you?" He went along with that.
Then she said that the aquifer had receded way down long ago and he probably wouldn't find any. But that if he made his calculations better, she wouldn't turn him in. Probably they're not allowed to dig wells there now in the city.
Also when he claimed he could do what he wanted on his own property, she said they were eight meters below the surface, and he only had surface rights and not subsurface rights.
Alejandra said they'd seal up the hole tomorrow with cement, and nothing more would be done if he was careful where he was digging.
Then they both stuck their heads into the hole from their respective sides to get a look and incidentally get their faces very close. It was suwheet. LOL
Aribeth, I guess I missed that or forgot about it! Well, then, they must have had him working at home just so he could solidify his relationship with Santiago and the girls.

Confession time: in spite my efforts against it, I became a Carlos fan. Marcos Méndez's interpretation of this insecure, childish goldenboy is adorable.
I also like Galilea much. She's neither a Daniela Romo, nor a professional actress, but first, I've seen worse protagonists, second, judging from her interviews she seems to be a nice person.
Her transformation into Slutty Marta was hilarious.
Was that also revealed before, and I forgot?
It’s been six hours since I returned from visiting my dear friend Amanda (aka Tida) in Venezuela. Amanda and I have shared many travel adventures, from Haiti to New Zealand, but this is her first State Department post, and my first time visiting her in one of her new overseas homes. As Venezuela, with its unfriendly government, is not a popular destination for Americans, this was a unique opportunity I could not pass up. We spent much of my time there on the beaches of a Venezuelan island chain in the Caribbean, with all of the other Venezuelans celebrating a long holiday weekend. It was spectacularly beautiful and relaxing. You can stop reading here and just look at the pictures: http://vinette.shutterfly.com/1441. For those wanting to learn a bit more, read on.
The highlights of the trip included the aforementioned beach trip to the Los Roques Archipelago. Our posada (guest house) put together a cooler with lunch, snacks and drinks for us each day and arranged for a boat to drop us off on a different island and pick us up each day. The boat captain and mates set up chairs and an umbrella in a spot of our choosing and left us to our devices. It was heavenly. The Santa Teresa Hacienda/Rum Factory and rum tasting; majestic views of Caracas from the northern mountainsides; and spending time with Amanda and her State Department friends were other highlights.
The most interesting and surprising things about Venezuela lie in its contradictions. It is a Socialist country (run by a quasi dictator) that depends on oil revenue and whose most profitable industry is plastic surgery. I have never seen so many fake boobs, enhanced buttocks, plumped lips and tightened faces outside of a Latin American telenovela (soap opera). And it’s not just a luxury for the rich; the middle class and the poor alike see the addition of silicone parts as a necessity of life. So much so that after seeing the many propaganda billboards with a heart encasing the slogan “Hecho en Socialismo” (made in socialism), I suggested that plastic surgeons make a t-shirt version with two strategically placed “hecho en socialismo” hearts, and give it to their patients!
Venezuela pays homage to its colonial and post-colonial past constantly by celebrating its countryman, the great liberator Simon Bolivar. Yet virtually no buildings or structures remain from the era. Caracas is a city of brick and block high rises that looks very little like most major cities of Latin America that have maintained many of their colonial churches, municipal buildings and old homes. Murals and billboards across the country tout national pride, but the systemic corruption and sense of entitlement fostered by the government has resulted in a workforce that takes little pride in customer service, hard work, or a job well done. But there is also much hope. There is no denying the amazing wealth that lies beneath the earth of Venezuela; the incredible natural beauty; and the hope and promise of much of its population. It was Amanda’s housekeeper Gema, a middle aged woman who came to Caracas from Trinidad over 30 years ago, who reminded me of this. For her, Venezuela has been, and is, the great land of opportunity for herself, her two daughters and her granddaughters. I wish all the best for her, her family, and the other welcoming Venezuelans I met.
Niecie, that is an excellent point! I'm also worried now about Elsa: she seems to be left in the red-shirt category. That is, like on Star Trek when the crewman in the red shirt always is the one who gets killed.
She's at lose ends now, and I hope Carlos and Roberto don't plan to set her up to be the victim that puts suspicion on Juan José and puts him in jail again.
The only reason I see Marta falling for Mario is because of the money, unless Mario was extra debonair in the 80s. Santiago definitely was NOT.
There are various reasons why people fall in love and whatnot, but Marta/Mario and Marta/Santiago is such a mismatch that it's causing cognitive dissonance.
I'm trying to understand what was it about Marta (besides her beauty) that made both Mario and Santiago fall in love with her, because personality and intelligence wise, Marta is deficient.
I feel so sorry for Elsa. I too hope there is somebody great in her future. They had better not use her to try and put JJ back in jail. I hate to think of anything bad happening to her.
I can't decide if Marco is going to get redeemed at the end of this (he treats his sister like dirt and did awful things in prison and sells drugs after his prison break) or is he going to really go to the dark side. It looks like for sure he will find out about the diamonds in the shoes. Right now I can't stand this character.
Loved the first meeting between Ali and JJ. Hope there is more soon.
Maybe Leonardo will eventually wind up with Juieta. I would like to see her with someone nice.
and whose most profitable industry is plastic surgery. I have never seen so many fake boobs, enhanced buttocks, plumped lips and tightened faces outside of a Latin American telenovela (soap opera).
LOL. And in the same time: it's sad.
(Hecho en Socialismo. Yeah. My country was socialist for 40 years, and while the system definitely had its merits, our economy and society still bear the burden of it.)
Jeri, I must first comment on "...the kiss abruptly ends, leaving Elsa suddenly bereft and perplexed, listening to Juan José's stammering apologies for his perceived effrontery. It won't happen again, he promises, to Elsa's crushing disappointment." Your words conveyed Elsa's heartbreak and dashed hopes perfectly.
You capture every nuance, every suspensful scene, i.e. "The doorbell rings, shattering the reverie.." masterfully.
This was absoultely fantastic Jeri.
I had no idea Leonardo is wealthy. His lifestyle and unaffected demeanor gave no indication. Family money perhaps? I laughed how Ramón was right on top of that. An idyllic ranch vs. their dangerous, all-consuming job? I can't blame Ramón for suggesting it at all!
"Carlos becomes a little misty when Yolanda reveals she loves him". He does have a heart and a conscience, now he just needs to discover them.
I really like Galilea. I would never have known she wasn't a professional actress. Actually, I would have preferred her for Juan (after Elsa of course). :)
I loved the way Juan crawled further out of the hole to watch Ale walk away. Of course, she knew he was looking. Lucky, lucky lady.
Great comments everyone!
Welcome back Vivi. What a spectacular trip you had!
Diana
Yes, LOL, Ramón was funny. He was right on top of that, as you so aptly put it. He's headed for a cushy ranch foreman's job, he hopes.
And it will be nice for whatever lucky girl gets him, whether Elsa or Julieta -- or who else?
Regarding Márta and Santiago and Mario, she was a humorous surprise; but I don't have a problem with those two falling in love with her at all.
Young men are often trying to get with ladies like Márta, IMO; they're obsessed with anyone who can keep their plumbing in top working order.
And then later they think about making her toe the mark; tsk tsk.
First, congratulations for flying in that small plane but the photos from the plane of the islands and the crystal clear aquamarine water are beautiful.
I have heard that Miss Venezuela is usually a winner or finalist in the Miss Universe beauty contest and that she has had some plastic surgery enhancement but I didn't realize it was a national obsession. What a contradiction for a socialist regime.
Thanks for sharing your fun trip.
GinCA
When JJ said he'll accompany Elsa home Asunción said "Tardate lo que quieras", in English: I don't know, maybe "Take your time as long as you want." And he even winked, making JJ very frustrated. :)

They were so cute together both trying to hide what their real purpose was in being underground. They looked so good together, but then I also think that Elsa and JJ look good together. Maybe Carlos can be a possible prospect for Elsa?? He did think she was pretty when he went to her apartment.
So, another reveal. Marta was a real good time girl. She acted like a real airhead, and yet she was Mario's love of his life, and Santiago/Fausto married her. That was an interesting scene, and I agree with GinCA I also didn't expect her to be like that.
Jeri, I was also surprised that Leo was wealthy and has a ranch. So why isn't he living the better lifestyle, but instead rented his current apartment.
I agree with everyone, Mario looked sort of scared when he shook hands with Roberto, lol.
I am going to keep saying this, I just love this novela. Everyone is perfect in their role. Even the pairing of the couples is perfect.
Margaret
They made a solid point about it the day they showed him doing his own laundry, saying he had no domestic help, and Gabriela remarking about it to her dad.
But he does have a washing machine; he offered Gabriela and her family the use of it...
Can I just say how much I love Leo. I love how he has all the bad guys in his sights and squirming, but I do fear for his safety, like I fear for Mario's (or Fausto playing Mario). Roberto is turning into a really evil character. He gave me the chills shaking Mario's hand. I feel like Leo's wife's murder had something to do with this smuggling gang. (Or was something about this uncovered last week?) He is so passionate about putting them away, at the expense of being with his daughter at his hacienda, living the good life with his money. I really want him for Julieta. She's so sweet.
I got a big kick out of Gali's transformation into slutty Marta. :) That was a surprise. Marta was a bitch. I agree that it's an interesting plot twist to not have her be a saint. I also agree that Gali is doing a great job playing her demure obedient part, and then hamming it up as Marta. I don't know many of our US non-actor tv hosts that would be able to pull off acting so well. In Fausto's conversation with her about staying away from Carlos and David and being upset she went out with Carlos after declaring her interest in David, I wondered if her resemblance to Marta makes him extra worried she will turn out like Marta- using her beauty to lead men on, snag powerful men, and break men's hearts.
Leonardo's supposed to know him as Fausto Guillén, as far as I know. I love Leo, too. I'd be with him in a second. He makes me feel safe.
In this episode when Ramón bemoans the glut of miscreants besetting the population, Leonardo answers, "...that's what they have US for!"
And I forgot his wife was...murdered? If his wife was murdered, that could be a candidate for the reason he came to the D.F., incognito as a working-class guy.
Right now Julieta's twisting in the wind; but I think Roberto could hurt and endanger her, and then she'd be glad of Leonardo's rescue.
I think Santiago's got a lot of baggage remaining where Márta, Mario and David are concerned. But he seems to still have enough sense left to work with Mario and grant Gabriela a relationship with David if that's what she truly wants.
It seems he can draw a favorable comparison of Gabriela to her mother. They are different. I couldn't help thinking that Galilea sure remembers the '80's, LOL.
I have been thinking that Juan and gabby would make a great couple, both are gorgeous , kind & humble. Alejandra seems nice but
extremely stiff & dull for Juan , she would be better suited for two emotion David. Anyone else agree ?
