Llena de Amor #53 Fri 10/22/10

Brandon wipes OJ off of Ilitia, who surprisingly lets him.

Muneca and the maid free themselves from being tied up. The captions are horrible/nonexistent again today. I am amazed again, for the 100th time, how a major TV network can screw up something so simple. My brother has made recordings of German TV shows to share with us (me and my other brothers) and made the captions himself with some program he got for free. Inexcusable.

Fedra whines about Emil supporting Netty. Spiderus says well, Netty IS pretty… Fedra doesn’t like that at all. Eman comes in and wants to talk to her alone, Spiderus leaves. Eman wants to know if Chema and Jose Maria are the same person. Ominous music.

Brandon and his horrible chango/chilango voice try and comfort Ilitia, she gets weepy and says whenever he’s around something goes wrong, her life is a disaster.

Fedra tells Eman she doesn’t want to talk about that guy, he’s dangerous. Eman says he is the one who killed her parents, right? She says yes and whines on about how he should forget about Chema and pay attention to his own life.

Ilitia cries and Brandon tries to comfort her. He says it hurts him to see her cry. She pushes him out and closes her door. He says to himself that it looks like she has a heart after all.

Eman says the day he was in the fire Fedra kept yelling for Jose Maria to save her son, why was she doing that? Emil walks up and wants to know what they are talking about. Fedra gives Eman a dirty look.

Mari tells Maximo that she isn’t afraid of Fedra, she won’t let her push her around. Maximo is proud of her. He gives her a knife to carry with her to defend herself. She says first Netty gives her pepper spray, now he gives her a knife, what is everyone arming her for? Maximo says for the war! Fedra declared war the day Mari was born.

Emil wants to know who Jose Maria Sevilla. She says you know, the guy who killed my parents. Eman asks if she had a kid with Jose Maria, Gretel heard her cry to J.M. to save his/her child the night of the fire. Emil tells Eman not to say crap like that and respect his mother. I’m having a bit of a hard time following all this, sorry. Fedra says Gretel is sick and anyway that night she was all worried and crazy because of the fire. The fire made her remember the worst day of her life, sorry! She leaves and Eman says he thinks that maybe Fedra isn’t who they thought she was. Emil says he is having that same feeling, even after 25 years of marriage. Well that settles Eman’s parentage, he has to be in his 30s (ok that’s in real life, we’re supposed to believe Fernando Colunga as college aged half the time too).

Maximo tells Mari that her father had discovered Fedra’s secret but died before he could tell him (and others I guess, like Eva and Netty) what it was. Maximo says what a coincidence that he died then, he wasn’t a drinker, he knows that he was pushed. And the same thing might happen to Mari, so take the knife! She takes it.

Muneca and the maid untie Low and the driver. Low begs forgiveness for all this happening, Muneca swears she is going to find a way to help him out of this situation.

Begonia gets test results and is excited. She tells the baby that now they have proof!

Oliver tries to sneak Gretel out of the pension. He says nobody is home, but they crouch down anyway, like that will help. She says they are acting like a couple of criminals, he says they are, they just stole a beautiful night. Aww. They go partway down the hall and Netty comes down the stairs and totally busts them.

Mari wonders if Fedra is really capable of killing her father. She looks at a photo of Fedra with Eman and Kristel, when Eman walks in and says hi to her she gets startled and drops it, breaking the glass in the frame. Eman says he’ll pick it up, he understands she’s nervous about what happened between them. She says it’s not that, she’s scared and pissed off because his mother won’t be happy until Mari is dead.

Oliver and Gretel pretend they were looking for an earring. When Netty sees that she has both earrings in, then they say oh wait it’s Gretel’s belly button ring. Netty wants to know what they were doing that would cause a belly button ring to fall out. Gretel somehow manages to change the subject to say that she really came over to tell her thanks for going with her father Emil to the hospital to see Axel. Netty falls for it and gives her a hug. Gretel takes this opportunity to leave, Oliver follows her.

Mari tries to tell Eman that Fedra tried to choke her, he tries to make excuses or that she misunderstood something, Mari says whatever she’s your mother of course you will always take her side. Mari leaves.

Kristel is suffering from morning sickness worse than any woman in the real world has ever suffered. She acts like she drank a couple bottles of whiskey the night before. Nereida sits and watches her with a smile. It sounds like Nereida agrees to make a tea to kill the baby, but I don’t think that’s right. I think she is going to make a tea to help Kristel feel better, and keep the secret, but first Kristel has to give her a little extra money in her salary. Blackmail.

In Los Angeles, Brandon talks to some guy about the helicopter accident. The copter was new, in perfect condition, there was no reason for it to blow up. If there was more to that conversation please fill me in. The captions suck ass and I can’t understand Brandon’s horrible voice very well.

Doris is reading some magazine about Mexican history, Gladiola shows up and tells her she’s late for work. Doris runs off and Gladiola picks up the magazine. Was this a follow up to some earlier PSA material about Mexican history? My contribution – if you have a chance to visit Guanajuato, do it. Full of history and so interesting and fun. I’ve been there twice and I can’t wait to go again sometime.

Paula is preparing a meal for Maximo, based on the care she is giving to make sure everything is just right. Gretel sneaks in, saying she doesn’t want Fedra to see her. She is smiling and says she finally has good reason, she’s in love! I feel bad saying this, since Gretel is such a sympathetic character, but she has horrible teeth. Being in a family this rich, her teeth should look perfect, like her parents and siblings. What happened here?

Ilitia’s modeling engagement is going poorly. She pouts and the director calls a break. Ilita goes for a drink, some chick stops her, saying she already can’t walk straight, no more drinks! Ilitia whines and feels sorry for herself.

Eman decides he is going to try and stop his mother from ruining more lives. He calls someone to deliver a box of chocolate to Mari. Spiderus is skulking about and overhears.

Mari sits in her room and fusses that Eman won’t accept that his mother is a killer. She says she has to find out who Fedra really is, she has to finish her father’s investigation. She is talking out loud of course, so Gretel overhears and comes in, wanting to know what’s up. Mari instead asks her where she was last night.

Paula and Maximo talk about their past, there was something about a pregnancy but I couldn’t understand if she was pregnant or if someone else was, or what. Anyway Paula has kept this crappy job for so many years to be near Maximo, she wants to know what has he done for their love? She has made such a sacrifice. She leaves in tears, he calls after her but she doesn’t come back.

Oliver and the Comisario discuss how the family Ruiz y de Teresa is surrounded by deaths and it’s suspicious. Muneca shows up to talk to them. She says she needs help, some guy are threatening her family.

Low is pushing Begona around, she must have come to him with the proof. He is mad that she came to his house with this. She wants to know how he can reject Christian as his son but he accepts Ilitia, even though she is the product of an affair too. He wants to know how she knows all that. She says Muneca told her. He says he doesn’t want to discuss this with her. She then drags out the test results to prove his paternity. I guess before she had just shown up and he was pushing her out of the house on general principle.

Fedra is livid that Eman has the gall to order chocolates for Mari, like it’s a crime. She is worried that Eman actually likes her, Spiderus says it isn’t possible. Fedra thinks that it really is happening and is worried. Spiderus says don’t worry, soon Eman will be bringing her flowers….. to her grave. He is going to do something to her chocolates.

Begona tells Low that she is going to tell Muneca the truth and she’ll dump his ass. Her goal is to ruin him. He says the test results are fake. She says check it out, they are for real. Uh oh I think something bad is going to happen to Begona. Then she says the only way out for him is to recognize his paternity, to give her son his name. She says he better decide quickly, then leaves with the baby.

Muneca is trying to get the Comisario to put 15 men on her house for protection, but won’t tell him who is threatening her family or why. Good luck with that. Oliver and the Comisario feel the same way, Oliver says talk or they can’t help. The Comisario says this whole appearance by her here makes him think that the accusation that Low had some contraband was true after all.

Crap I thought I would escape the entire Axel amnesia saga but here he is in his bed. He wants Fedra to tell him why everyone is so worked up all the time, what’s the deal? She says it’s all because of Mari, ever since she has come to the house she has been tormenting Fedra and the others. She says more bad things about Mari, that she wants to destroy the family. She tells Axel not to worry about that, she has a surprise, she invited his girlfriend over. He is as surprised as we are to discover that he has a girlfriend. I see what Fedra’s plan is, I’m sure it won’t work in the long run. I don’t think losing your memory makes you any less gay. Emil comes in and says that they all need to talk. He wants to know what Fedra did to him before that was so horrible.

Gretel is really rocking the tight low cut t-shirt, but those teeth. She is going on an on to Mari about how awesome Oliver is and how awesome their relationship is, it’s so awesome. Mari has a doll, she says she found it in her father’s office. Gretel starts doing a freak out. Mari says there are some things she doesn’t understand. Why did Gretel say she was responsible for Mari’s father’s death? You were there right? You saw him fall out the window?

Fedra gets all defensive, how can he think she would do something against her kids? See Axel? This is what Mari has brought into this house! They argue for a bit and Fedra blames it all on Mari. Emil says he’s starting to question what kind of woman she is, he isn’t quite buying into her I’m so awesome talk.

Mari pushes Gretel for her version of the death way back when. Gretel just freaks out a bit. She has a flashback of Fedra throwing the guy off the balcony. Gretel tells Mari that she saw everything! Mari (and the entire viewership) says “tell me then! TELL ME!” Gretel just acts all freaky. Cripes.

Eman wants Maximo to tell him whatever it is that he knows about Fedra. Maximo isn’t in the mood, Eman says he isn’t leaving. He must know why Fedra is his worst enemy.

Mari begs some more, Gretel doesn’t answer some more. CRIPES. Gretel finally says “the silver lily” and passes out. Thanks for nothing.

Emil asks Axel to leave him alone with Fedra. They are in Axel’s room – they have this huge house, and they have to kick him out of his own room to talk in private? Very selfish. Fedra starts cursing Mari some more, it’s all her fault. Then she insults Netty, Emil says that Netty was by his side the whole time at the hospital with Axel, and where was Fedra? Huh? HUH? Fedra says tell me the truth, is she your lover? Emil says no, because Netty deserves better than to just be someone’s lover. She has class, etc etc. Unfortunately, he says, I can’t say the same about you. Oh SNAP. Nice one. Fedra starts trying to beat him up, then gets all weepy and tries to play the victim. He says again that he is questioning everything where she is concerned, and maybe even her name is fake. She says she told him everything, he says no, she told him a story and he believed it. She says she never held a gun on him to fall in love with her or marry her, he says she’s right, that was his mistake and now he has to suffer the consequences. He says everything is going to be different now. He is going to uncover her past. This was a great scene, hopefully Emil follows through.

Low visits some guy in jail. Low says he’s tired of dealing with flunkies so he came here to talk right to the boss. The guy, named Garduno, says Low shouldn’t have moved the stuff out of his house. Low says he had to and it was a miracle the cops didn’t find it. He says he has done everything that Garduno has asked of him. Garduno says yes and he wants to help him, he wants his people happy. Remember when Low asked him to take care of the woman that appeared with his son? He had it taken care of until Low sent word to call it off. Low says he regrets doing that. He has changed his mind and he does want her gone after all.

Maximo can’t believe how different Eman is from his mother, how strange the world is. Maximo goes on to say that he never believed Fedra’s story about her parents dying and all that. She doesn’t act like the fine lady she pretends to be. Maximo says Fedra broke Emil up with Muneca, who he was engaged to at that time. Eman did not know this. Also, Maximo says, right after that, Fedra announced that she was pregnant, and Eman was born SEVEN MONTHS after Fedra first showed up. Ding ding ding there we have it, officially. Eman is not a Ruiz y de Teresa. The cousin loving is ON. Well now it’s NOT cousin loving but you know what I mean.

Mari tries to wake up Gretel. She calls for help. Axel comes in and immediately thinks Mari did something to her. He is really mean to Mari.

Eman doesn’t want to believe the news that Emil isn’t his father. He says Emil and Fedra were together before she came to the house, but Maximo says Emil found her on the beach, they were married less than a month later, and seven months after that Eman was born. Maximo is sorry for causing him this pain. Eman says that his mother couldn’t have done that. Where has he been? She would do anything. Eman continues to deny it. Maximo says fine, go ask her who your father is. She is the only one who knows, but you don’t have my blood, you aren’t a Ruiz y de Teresa!

Monday – Brandon and Ilitia hit the sheets and this time her parents aren’t around to break it up. More kissing with Eman and Mari, maybe he is seeing the upside to not being part of the family.

Chris, thanks for the super recap inspite of the crummy captions.

I agree about Gretel's teeth, they have always bothered me. I am surprised that Uni hasn't done anything about them. The other thing that bothers me are Brandon's wrinkles, he looks way too old to be playing this part.

I am delighted to see some plot movement finally.

Rosemary

Fantastic recap, I laughed out loud several times!

I am glad to hear it wasn't just me who had trouble with the captions with this episode. I struggled and struggled with several scenes.

I THINK (this is a BIG "think" here) that Paula had a baby but lost it (miscarriage?) and that she has given up the chance to have a family and has "lived in the shadows" to be near Maximo. It sounds like she and Maximo were in love (well, we knew that) and that they would have gotten married except for family interference, due to her "just" being a servant.

I could be really off-base about the particulars, though. I rewound that scene a few times because it was quite a bombshell and I was trying to make sure I understood. So if I got it wrong, PLEASE, someone, clear it up!

Aw, no love for Brandon and his naco voice? I love Brandon. It's a toss-up between Brandon and Emanuel for me. Brandon maybe isn't as much of a heartthrob (he said once that he doesn't have a "galán" face), but he's feisty and I like that.

I looked up the ages of most of the actors, and it looks like Valentino Lanus is 35, Armando (whatever) aka Brandon is 40, Cesar Evora (Emiliano) is 50 or 51, Laura Flores (Netty) is like 47 I think? and the woman who plays Fedra is 45. Doris is 30 and the girl who plays Marianela is early 20s (23?). Yes, it is a bit weird to pair up a 40-year-old (Brandon) with a early-20s girl, but to be fair I think Brandon can pass for 35 (but that still is oldish for Marianela!). Valentino Lanus does look over 30 though—definitely not the 25 I guess they're trying to imply. But oh well. I am happy with all the casting choices now and wouldn't change them for anything.

I guess I've noticed that Gretel's teeth were not that great, but they are all intact and not brown, what more do you want? LOL.

I agree with Rosemary, it's nice to see the plot move along, and hopefully we will now see a Emanuel who knows what he wants, instead of dithering about how he feels about Marianela.

Chris, I have observed that the closed captions are at their worst on Friday nights. Why would it be different one night of the week? Do they have different people doing the job? If so then the Friday person sucks.

Gretel has that horrible telenovela disease of can't-get-it-out-itis. She is as bad as those dopes in Querida Enemiga. Remember they couldn't communicate worth a crap? Same deal with Gretel.

When has Ilitia been a drinker? All of a sudden she's boozing it up? During work?

Why is Eman giving Marianela chocolates when she's trying to diet?

My favorite, "maybe he is seeing the upside to not being part of the family". Oh yeah, finally! I'm glad the secret is out before the end of the telenovela.

This was a fun and lively episode, but also kind of confusing with all the explanations, revelations (and non), suspicions, accusations, etc. Chris, thank you for powering through and making sense of it all AND making it ten times funnier than the original with your editorial comments on the numerous absurdities.

Oh why did you mention Guanajuato? I was there last year at this time for the Festival Cervantino and I have been pining like crazy not to be there now. Boo hoo. You're right, it's a magical place.

Sweeney, I think you may be on to something with your Paula theory.

Chris, great recap. I don't think you missed a thing despite the awful captions. I don't know what the deal is; they're usually fine on Tuesdays (fortunately for me) but Friday just useless.

The tea Nereida offered to make for Kristel is to kill the baby. She made it once before but Fedra tasted it and poured it out.

Sweeney, I understood that scene with Paula and Máximo the same way you did, but I wasn't sure whether the baby was miscarried or perhaps given up for adoption or something. Or did Paula actually abort it? Anyway, they didn't get married, which I think is strange because Máximo doesn't seem like one to take suggestions from anyone. Does Carlota really have that much control over the family?

I am SO SO glad that Emanuel and Emiliano are finally getting a clue. Now if Gretel could just spit it out. Maybe they could play a game of 20 questions so she could just nod. How hard can it be to figure out who pushed LF? Only a certain number of people were in the house, you can probably rule out the children...

Good morning Chris. Always enjoy your exasperated George Carlin type recaps. And Carlos can forward your initial paragraph about the captions to the folks he complains to at Univision. Interesting that they're always worse on Friday. I hadn't noticed a pattern.

"She's talking out loud of course". I've watched these telenovelas so much, that's beginning to seem normal. In fact I'm doing it myself. Help! The Alzheimer's Ward is my next stop, I guess.

Chris, sorry the captions were so awful. However, it certainly didn't affect your recap. It was great - crisp and sprinkled throughout with your wonderful humor, especially "Kristel is suffering from morning sickness worse than any woman in the real world has ever suffered".

Now that Emil is suspicious of and Eman knows he is not Emil's son, how much longer can Fedra slime her way out of the net? Of course, it would be helpful if Gretel would become a bit more cohenrent and tell what she knows now rather than during the final episode.

Let's hope Mari's determination to succeed in her diet thwarts Spiderus' plan to poison the chocolates.

I am crazy about Brandon. His megawatt smile is infectious and endearing.

Diana

Chris- You did a great job of capturing everything despite the caption troubles.

What I understood in the conversation with Paula and Max was that today was the anniversary of the death of their baby (miscarriage). That's why she looked so sad on this particular day and why Gretel asked her why she looked so sad. Not sure if she was a servant at the time when they were together, but she was of low social status and Carlota and the rest of his family forbade the marriage. When she lost the baby, it looks like Max gave in to his family. Then Paula became a servant in his household so that at least they could be close to each other, if not married happily ever after. Very sad actually. I'd be ticked at Max too.

I never watch with captions, but I have been curious what the captions say each time someone calls Mari La Gorda, La Gordis, or Gordita. The Fat One, The Chubster, Fatty, Little Fat One? How do you make any of those sound like a term of endearment in English?

All I can say about the Axel situation is "Head, meet palm." Ugh!

Thanks Vivi, you've clarified the conversation between Paula and Maximo. Makes sense.

I know what you mean about the fatty terms of endearment and I've heard my own friends (Mexican) say that sort of thing to each other, but it's still hard for me to fathom. It's definitely a cultural thing.

Vivi, the captions are in Spanish too. I like to have them on because some characters are hard to understand, and I can process the written words much faster than what I hear. I guess better practice would be to turn them off, but then it would take me all day to write a recap.
Thanks for clarifying the Paula and Nereida scenes, everyone.
I like Brandon too, but his voice, Ugh.
Sylvia I have always referred to the 'I have something to tell you' bit as Lorena and Alonso disease. Those two were the worst, in that show, of never getting it out.

Yes! Lorena and Alonso were the worst.

Vivi, thank you for clearing up the stuff about Maximo and Paula. I thought it was something about losing a child, but missed the stuff about it being an anniversary. That adds an extra layer.

As for what the closed captions say, they just say "gordita" or whatever, since they're in Spanish. (Not sure if you knew that or not?) I read the previous recaps which explained that in Mexico, "gordita" is not an insult the way it would be in the USA if "fatty" or "chubby" were used. (Edit: I see several others have said the same thing about the Spanish CCs.)

Diana, you and me both love Brandon and his smile! It took me a little while to notice him, but now he's one of my favorites.

Chris I love starting my week with your recaps. Always make me laugh and get me moving on an otherwise crummy morning.

Boy the men in the Teresa family show their spines a bit late in life it seems. Now we can add Max to the list. Of course, dear Eman isn't really a Teresa as it has now been spilled by said Max, but they say children are largely a product of their environment too.
Poor Paula.

This week should have some major movement on the couples front...even for a little while (TN law - don't get to be permanently happy until the end.) But it should be fun for awhile. Valentino really brings it to the love scene--wooh! I hope we even get a little Emi/Netty action since I just love to listen to Cesar making his moves with that voice of his. Makes chocolate melt.

Ok, before I hyper-ventilate, better get back to work.

Duh! (To myself.) Of course the captions are in Spanish, not English. Sorry for the silly question. :) I still wonder how a good translator would translate all those fatty terms of endearments without insulting an English speaking audience.

If Mari sticks to her diet and doesn't eat the poisoned chocolates, who does? Too bad that it is not closer to end of this TN so Fedra could grab them away from Mari and eat them herself.

Rosemary

Chris, thanks for another fun recap. I always look forward to your work. When I first joined Caray Caray I was particularly interested in the efforts of the two guys, you and the Nickster. Had it not been for you two, I likely would not have mustered the courage to try it myself.

My heart sank when I saw the state of the CCs on LldA Fri. After a week or so of pretty passable captions, it was a major disappointment. They did, however, improve toward the latter part of the show and were pretty much OK for Dinero and STuD. Perhaps another note to Ms Olivares is in order. Actually, up until Fri. I had planned to write today thanking her for the improvement.

Like Maximo, I was frustrated with Manny. At first he pesters the poor old fart to reveal the truth about his Mom and then gets all bent out of shape when he hears it. What was he expecting to learn, that she wears white after Labor Day? Grow up, Manny!

I'm beginning to wonder if the writers might actually bump off Begoña. She sure could sink Lorenzo and it's still early.

I kinda like Gretel's smile. She looks real.

Carlos

Thanks for the recap Chris. As others have mentioned, you did a great job despite the caption problem. Thanks too for those of you who clarified the confusing parts.

It's really painful seeing Axel being a complete pawn of Fedra's. I hope he doesn't turn on Gretel too.

Sylvia & Chris - ITA Lorena and Alonso were horrible communicators. I wish TNs could vary the methods of withholding information.

here! here! carlos and others sticking up for Gretel's teeth. are we really that brainwashed into thinking that the boob jobs, nose jobs, and all the other hideous plastic plastic surgery, caps and dental enhancement and the rest of the "surgical industrial complex" is true beauty! thank goodness Gretel looks like a normal person.

carolina

That was one thing I really liked about Guapos...that secrets were kept because people had their reasons (evil or protective) for keeping them...not just because no one could ever finish a sentence.

I can understand why Emanuel and Emiliano still have any doubts at all about Fedra...I'm glad they're getting a clue but they both still seem to believe she's basically a good person with maybe a few dark secrets...and they KNOW that she's abusive to Axel, Gretel, and Marianela. Sheesh.

Well, I'm spared any horror at Gretel's teeth. My old non HD TV doesn't show anything amiss. Are they chipped, broken, uneven? Anyway, as I said, not noticeable on my old crappy (but beloved) TV.

Looking forward to the lovefest between Brandon and Ilitia tonight. That should add a little sizzle to the evening. I presume the reason she was drinking is to give credence as to why she would fall in bed with our naco policia.

I thought Gretel's teeth looked a little crooked but it doesn't bother me. She looks normal. As to whether this is believable for her character, I think it's pretty clear that her mom doesn't care and her dad doesn't notice. If it were Kristel the beauty queen who had crooked teeth, they would have been straightened, but Fedra doesn't bother with Gretel much.

Also, I think that unless she needed braces for actual health reasons, Gretel would resist getting them, because she's so annoyed by her family's obsession with appearances (okay, Fedra and Kristel, who somehow dominate the family character).

Yep, looks like Maggie is getting a scorcher tonight. I hope her bursitis has subsided...but if not she can probably just type something like "Brandon + Ilitia!!!!!" with one finger and that will cover it. Although Brandon is not the best kisser...the last time these two smooched he reminded me of a woodpecker.

all right, before everyone thinks I'm so superficial about Gretel's teeth. For one, it's TV, seeing someone with 'normal' teeth is jarring. Two, I don't think I would equate braces with cosmetic surgery.

I had crooked teeth my whole life and the only thing between me and braces was money. When I got older, I saved up and got them. I have never regretted it or thought of it as some vanity thing. So, due to that, maybe I pay attention more because I hated my teeth for so long. To me having nice teeth (clean too, not fake white like Oraney's teeth) is important in the same way as taking showers and wearing clean clothes.

It's funny to see which comments/observations get the most attention!

to clarify, I meant I didn't see it as some vanity thing along the lines of boob jobs and botox and whatever. I actually have a lot less pain in my teeth now that they aren't pushing on each other in strange directions.

Oh, I agree with you, Chris. I had braces for the same reasons...pain and self-consciousness because my teeth were so crooked and jammed together. There's nothing wrong with having braces. But I don't think it's necessary unless your teeth are actually bothering you.

Back when I had braces and for awhile thereafter, I noticed EVERYONE'S teeth, but that interest has waned over the years. Maybe I'll pay attention to Gretel's dental situation tonight and determine my uninformed position on the matter.

I did notice while watching Gancho that Constanza (Laisha Wilkins) has some crooked teeth, and it certainly hasn't harmed her attractiveness, as Carlos will confirm.

I'm really disappointed in both Máximo and Paula. Him, for apparently stringing Paula along all these years. If he was really in love with her, he should have married her at some point. Maybe his family didn't approve, but please. He was an adult, he apparently had his own career, he should have made his own decisions. If he didn't love Paula that much, he should have told her so and let her move on. I'm disappointed in Paula for putting up with this treatment. He's basically told her that he sees her as low-status and unworthy, letting her work as a servant while he sits in his room and does nothing, and she is still in love with him? Ugh.

Julia, yes indeed, Coni (Laisha Wilkins) has a lovely smile... as well as everything else. Well, actually her personality and attitude left a bit to be desired initially. Except for adding a couple of pounds, I wouldn't change a thing about her appearance.

Carlos

Chris...I'm glad you saved up and got braces. That shows your determination (like passing the CPA on your own). I have an overbite that these days would have been corrected by braces, but it was only done in horrendous cases in my day (I'm 70). And an older dentist told me he thought overbites were cute. Hmmmmm...

Julia...I agree with you about the General. He clearly charts his own course and does what he damn well pleases, so there's no justification for his treatment of Paula.

My grandma had braces when she was in her 50s. When she was young it was less common and the family didn't have the money, then she was occupied with raising her kids and paying for their school and keeping the farm from failing, but then later she decided to go for it and have nice teeth.

Okay, everyone in this family has suspicions about Fedra. They have substantial financial means. Do you think any of them will think to hire a detective, who will have access to a lot more information? Or will they just ask Fedra?

Surely the boat must have been registered somewhere. It's hard to imagine a boat catching fire and sinking close enough to land that Fedra could wash up on the beach (I wonder if Bernardo was with her, or if he took a different route?) and no one taking note of the incident. Also simple enough to check government records and find that Fedra Curiel doesn't exist. Unless she stole someone's identity.

I just can't imagine how Emiliano could have been married to her this long and not known anything about her past. If she claimed to have amnesia from the accident and not remember, wouldn't that be even more reason for him to suggest that they have a detective do some searching, so she would know where she came from and all that? And how could he not suspect Emanuel wasn't his son?!

I guess all that time living in Real del Monte killed Emiliano's curiousity. We told him not to drink the water.

OK, Julia, now you've got me to thinking. So Emiliano found her washed up on the beach, nude... now I have amnesia about whether she had amnesia... so how does that explain Smiley? I know she credits him with saving her... was he her faithful manservant? She and Emiliano were married right away after he dumped Netty... she gave birth 7 mos. later and he's never given it a second thought? Is he a complete boob? What am I missing?

I'm confused.

Carlos

I'm confused, too, Carlos. Everyone is confused. I think Fedra likes it that way, although she'd really rather they just swallowed her lame lies.

I seem to recall that someone said they didn't know any details of Fedra's past, that she said she was from a good upper-class family but never provided any specifics and they'd never met any of her family, and she suggested that she couldn't remember everything. And no one seemed to be concerned about this. Because they're a terrible family, even without her, and they're so self-absorbed they don't care about anyone's amnesia.

Chris – just terrific and lots of fun. I love the tone of your writing. And the comments were fabulous today too!

It’s funny, but I was thinking about Gretel’s teeth when I watched this episode. I love her beauty, and that she doesn’t have standard cookie-cutter looks, and her teeth are part of the look that I like. As others have said, she looks real. In fact, the protagonista in the promos for the upcoming 8:00 show looks waaaay too perfect and I find that unintriguing. Yawn yawn yawn.

Anyway, I bet the Gretel actress gets them capped when she gathers some paychecks and then she will blind us with their whiteness and corn-row evenness.

Why did Maximo give Marianela a huge hunting knife? What’s she going to do with that, wear it on her belt?

Does Muneca really know that Ilita was the product of an affair? It seemed to last night that she referred to Ilita as a foundling.

I usually don’t go for the amnesia plot lines either, but I like how this one is playing out so far. As Marianela is the only one who knows Axel’s secret, and now Fedra has set her up as a liar and manipulator, Axel’s not going to believe her. Plus now Axel will be on the Fedra team..

I'm hoping Gretel will help set Axel straight. He definitely seemed to remember her and remember that they are close; when he came home from the hospital he went to her and gave her a big hug and seemed really happy to see her.

And by "set him straight," I don't mean try to convince him that Lorena is his girlfriend. I'm betting that even with head trauma and memory loss he won't go for that tramp...we'll see.

Thanks Julia, I had meant to comment on Fedra's latest ploy with Axel. Lorena, who has already demonstrated a shameless lack of self-esteem by her disgusting display in front of Axel's family, surely won't go along with this humiliating new opportunity for rejection... will she?

Carlos

Kind of off topic but back to the teeth thing, I was watching an Ed Sullivan retrospective on PBS and was struck by the normal-looking teeth on everyone. Actors have such over-whitened, capped teeth these days that when I saw the performers with normal teeth I thought "Gah, what's wrong with their teeth?" Then I realized "oh right, that's what teeth used to look like."

Carlos, Lorena is an opportunist. Remember, she is related to Orangey? I wouldn't put it past her to agree to make a play for Axel 1) for money, and 2) to somehow get revenge against Axel. She's despicable.
