La Verdad Oculta 038: Dora and Gabi Keep JJ’s Secret

The scene is set, and like any good murder mystery, (almost) all the players are gathered in a luxurious mansion. Alejandra, wearing a femme fatale worthy dress, is seated next to the mysterious and intriguing stranger Juan Ocampo (aka Juan Jose Victoria Ocampo). Next to them sits Don Mario, the generous millionaire, who is at the center of many mysteries, and his trusty right hand man Abelardo. They await the appearance of the (sort of) happy young couple David and Gabi, and the bitter and jealous niece Bertha. In walks the loyal maid Dora, carrying a tray of refreshments, with a contented smile on her face, because today they all celebrate the marriage of her “hijo de alma” (son of her soul/heart), who just might be the son of her very own flesh and blood. She spots our mysterious stranger and that smile immediately disappears into a look of shock and amazement (cara impactada) that tells us, and our hero JJ, that she recognizes who he is. He shifts uncomfortably under her gaze, but neither one of them lets on to the other players that they recognize each other. And here begins our story tonight.

Dora silently puts the tray on the table and walks away. Ale introduces Mr. Ocampo (JJ) as the man who bought the property next door that she is renovating. Mario is jovial and takes great interest. But if he recognizes who JJ really is, he does not let on. In strolls pouty Bertha to spoil the party, wanting to know why David is taking so long. Happy Mario is not surprised that he’s a bit late considering he has to pick Gabi up at her house, and she would want to take a little extra time to get gussied up for such a special occasion. As she can serve no constructive purpose in the conversation, Bertha decides to go elsewhere to pester other people with her uselessness. Namely, the servants, to check on how the preparations are coming. She passes David, Gabi and Juli, who are just arriving, and everyone in the living room stands to greet them. Ale introduces everyone to Juan, starting first with Gabi. As soon as she introduces them, Gabi and JJ flash back to their first meetings in the market and on the bus, when he was JJ Victoria- Version 1.0 (the scruffy edition). Gabi, like Dora, decides to stay silent about it for the moment. When David cheerfully greets him, Juan’s response is tepid. They all head in to the dining room.

We leave our mystery dinner party for a smaller gathering over brews between Carlos and Roberto. Carlos is still shell shocked that David actually married Gabi. She’s pretty and all…but to marry a waitress! He wants to know if Roberto knew this was in the works, but the master manipulator feigns total ignorance. (How is he keeping all the lies and half truths he is telling Carlos, Adolfo, David, Bertha, Juli and his father straight?) Carlos thinks the best way to mess things up for David and Gabi will be to tell David “the truth” (which is really a big fat lie) about what happened between him and Gabi at the beach house. But for now, he’s thinking of finding some amusement elsewhere, and Elsa fits the bill. He’ll go visit her this evening. Roberto thinks that’s a good idea since “un clavo saca otro clavo” (one nail gets rid of another/a new love interest makes you forget the last one).

We next see Leo and his partner Ramon. They have been staking out Elsa’s apartment building, waiting for Marcos to make an appearance. But neither he nor Elsa has been spotted since they spoke to her the other day. Leo drinks his coffee with a weary, far away look. Ramon asks him what’s wrong as he’s noticed he’s looked a bit sad of late. Leo admits it. He went to visit his daughter in Durango, and each time he leaves her and home he gets a bit nostalgic and homesick. Ramon thinks there might also be more, but Leo doesn’t admit to it. They get back to talking about Elsa and how strange it is that she just disappeared after they spoke to her. They decide to continue to question the neighbors.

Back at Mystery Manor, the champaign cork has been popped, nearly hitting Juan in his handsome face, and the festivities have begun. Ale thinks Juan has good luck (which we all know is true), but he thinks the only good luck he has is being there, with her, right at this moment. Mario is excited for the young couple to go on honeymoon, perhaps in Europe. He wants Gabi to get to know all the wonderful European cities—Barcelona, Paris, etc. He turns to Juan, knowing that as a man of the world, Juan must have travelled through these cities. “Sure, sure. I’m like the Count of Monte Cristo. I’ve travelled to places like…France! Yeah, that’s it. France.” Mario lets him off the hook by agreeing with him that France is indeed lovely, but doesn’t press for details. Gabi humbly chimes in that she would love to travel abroad, and has wanted to visit these places, but she’s only had the opportunity to get to know many places in Mexico, due to her father constantly changing jobs and moving them. Oh and she and her sister had that wonderful trip to L.A. recently!

Mario tells her all that’s changed now. She will get to travel! He addresses her as hija, and when she politely addresses him back as Señor and in the formal Usted form, he asks her to call him Mario. He’s her father in-law now, and will almost be like a second father to her. He can’t hide his excitement thinking of the day of the religious wedding ceremony, how beautiful everything will be, and above all how beautiful Gabi will be. David gives her a loving kiss in agreement with his father, and Ale questions what he thinks of all this since he hasn’t really said a word all evening. He answers that anything Gabi wants is what he wants, and Bitter Bertha fumes silently.

Mario stands to make the first toast (brindar) for the happiness of his child (children), and for Gabi to encounter a second family with their family. Both Gabi and David beam happily and stand to toast with his (their) father. Everyone else also stands to toast with them. Abelardo then suggest that, as Dora is as much a part of the family as he is, she should be with them to make the toasts. Mario agrees and speaks glowingly of Dora to Juan, as one of the maids goes off to find Dora. Juan looks a bit uncomfortable at the mention of Dora, but is saved from another uncomfortable encounter with her when a maid brings word that Dora isn’t feeling well and prefers to stay in the kitchen. Abelardo makes a nice toast, and then boorish Juan decides to jump in. He stands and makes a toast to life- that although not always happy, at least we can hope for justice (justicia) at its end. He gives Mario a hard significant look as he says these words. Everyone else looks a bit taken aback by such a strange toast for newlyweds, but Mario seems determined NOT to let anything or anyone rain on his parade this special day. He toasts with Juan, but David looks concerned. Ale wonders out loud at the toast since it doesn’t seem like life has been unfair to Mr. Ocampo. He lies that it hasn’t, and especially not now that he’s sitting here next to her. He struggles back and forth with using the formal or informal address (usted/tu) with her. They share a goofy grin and privately toast their combined luck. David and Gabi share an intertwined toast and kiss. Mario chuckles in delight at all the young love in the air. Bitter Bertha pouts and sulks.

Roberto meanwhile is having his second encounter with an Avila man this evening. Adolfo is not letting him off as easily as Carlos did, however. Adolfo is roughing him up and shaking him by his lapels after hearing Roberto has been barred from entering the Genoves house. “What did you do?! Something stupid right?!” Roberto swears he did nothing. That Mario somehow got it into his head that he was influencing David to do some idiotic thing (tonteria)- a sham wedding (boda falsa).

At the mansion, after-dinner drinks are being served in the living room. Gabi and the men are the only ones present at the moment and Gabi and David hang back canoodling near the bar. Mario calls David over to speak with him on the couch, and Juan finds his moment to move in and chat with Gabi. She eyes him suspiciously as he approaches. “Isn’t your name Juan Jose Victoria?” He asks her not to say anything and that he’ll explain later. Their conversation is cut short by David’s return.

At Elsa’s, Carlos has come looking for some distraction and is pounding on her door calling her name. Viewerville is very happy at this point that JJ made her move to the hotel. We are even happier when our favorite hero of the show, Leo, comes walking up behind Carlos, wondering what his business is there. He recognizes Carlos as the owner of Club Sagittarius and reveals they are conducting an investigation that involves Elsa’s brother. If Carlos sees his “friend” Elsa, have her get in contact with them. He and Ramon leave a bewildered and annoyed Carlos standing at Elsa’s door.

We cut to a very worried Fausto who is calling home and can’t reach his daughters, who should be home at this hour. We then see one of them, Gabi, strolling by the Genoves pool with her new husband David. She wonders why he’s been so quiet the whole evening and asks if he still thinks something happened between her and Carlos. If he still doubts her, she thinks they should just end things now before they go further (religious ceremony, living together, starting a family, etc.). Since he’s looking at her lovely face at the moment, no rival is present, and no little devil (Roberto) is whispering in his ear, he tells her how much he loves and adores her and wants to be with her. He kisses her passionately.

At the front door of the house, Ale is bidding Juan good night. Neither seems to want the evening to end and they make plans to see each other tomorrow, about the construction of the house of course. “Hatsa mañana.” She closes the door, but then leans against it, grinning from ear to ear.

Mario and Juli are in the living room, having a drink and a chat. He wants her to also think of this house as hers, and she thanks him. He wonders if she plans to still work at the club, and then offers her a good position at one of his other hotels anytime she wants one. (Do it Juli!) She thanks him enthusiastically. Mario tells her he will have Abelardo take her home, who is at that moment in the kitchen asking Dora how she is. She begs off, saying that she’s not really sick but mainly tired. Plus, she didn’t feel it was her place to be there making the toast with the family. Abelardo thinks this is nonsense considering how loved she is by David and Mario. Dora is agitated, refuses to listen, and begins to head to bed. Ever the gentleman, Abelardo tells her how wonderful the dinner and the preparations were, and thanks her. She smiles and walks away happy. He leaves to take Juli home, and Mario wanders off to bed with a spring in his step and a song on his lips. It has been a very happy day for him.

In his bedroom (recamera) upstairs, David finally looks like he’s enjoying the day. He excitedly tells Gabi that they can keep this room as theirs or they can take a bigger one in the house. Gabi doesn’t understand why they would need a bigger room, when this one is already larger than her whole apartment! The talk of bedrooms seems to have made David frisky. He wraps his arms around Gabi from behind and kisses her neck. She, a bit nervously, tells him how important this all is for her. There has never been another man (implies sexually) in her life, and he is the first man she has ever fallen in love with. He leads her to the bed and assures her that he understands this perfectly. She looks him directly in the eyes and tells him that he’s extremely important and significant to her. (Note this David. She is saying she is not messing around here. This is serious for her. So get it together!) He tells her that she’s also important to him. (Actions, not words, David.) If he’s acted like an idiot, it’s because of jealousy (celos) and because he love her so much. She wants them to leave all resentments (rencores) and the bad moments behind them. (Are you listening , David?) He agrees. They exchange sweet nothings (tu eres mi vida, te adoro, etc.), and begin to suck face. We go to commercial and I begin to wonder if they are not going to wait till after the religious ceremony to consummate the marriage afterall.

We’ll have to wait and see how far things go with David and Gabi. First we head to a couple that’s in dysfunction mode at the moment. Juan returns to the hotel after his evening at Mystery Manor with the lovely Alejandra, to find pouty Elsa who has fallen asleep on the couch waiting for him. She needs to talk to him. He tries to head off an argument by saying he was with some guys doing business (he’s got that cheating spouse thing down pretty well). She’s not interested in that and asks him to sit and talk. The head games begin. He sits next to her, gives her an appreciative look and tells her she looks very pretty. He wants to know if she happy and likes the place. She tells him she is and does, but she wants to go back to her own apartment and space. It’s where she lives, and she thinks it’s best that way. Juan brings up the trouble Marcos could cause for her, plus he just doesn’t like her living by herself. Especially with all those guys sniffing around her like that architect (Medina) and Carlos. She tries to reason with him once again. She’s a decent woman, and if she goes out with someone or someone visits her, there’s nothing bad in it. Juan’s answer: “NO ME GUSTA!” (I don’t like it.) Wrong answer buddy.

Elsa is ticked off (rightfully so). He can come and go as he pleases, but she has to follow his rules and do things as he wants her to? Hell no! She gets up in frustration and tells him he has no business trying to impose his will (voluntad) on her. She leaves the room in disgust.

It’s the next morning and Mario is waking up feeling a bit weak after all of yesterday’s excitement- tricking his children into marrying each other; straightening out his hardheaded son; soothing his daughter; physically throwing a scoundrel out of his house; and planning and hosting a celebratory dinner (that’s a lot for a guy on death’s door). He tells Abelardo how happy, excited and filled with emotion he was. They laugh at how confused, jealous and silly David has been, but Mario is sure they will be happy together. He wants Abelardo to send for the lawyer (notario) so that he can change his will and leave half to David and half to Gabi. (What about Ale and Bertha?). Abelardo wants to know when Mario’s going to talk to the two of them about their parentage (David being his adopted child and Gabi being his natural child), but Mario begs off until Santiago/Fausto returns and they can see about continuing with their plan. Abelardo wonders in Faustiago will follow through. Mario doesn’t know, but it’s the only way to save his fortune for David AND Gabi. This way, they won’t have to break the news to Gabi that Faustiago is not her father, but Mario gets to be close to her and leave her his fortune. It’s a win-win for everyone. (Surely, Faustiago will see it that way. Right?)

David enters and greets his father with a kiss. Mario, ever the proud papa, comments on how handsome he looks, and David inquires about his health. Mario says he’s just tired, but he’ll be up and about soon. He’s surprised that David isn’t still in bed (ahem)… David smiles and tells him not to go imaging things. Last night he took Gabi home a bit late, but only because they were talking (so, that’s what the kids are calling it these days). Mario hopes it wasn’t so late that Gabi can’t come over to have a meal with them that day. David assures Mario that he’ll speak to Gabi about coming over and have the chauffer pick her up. Mario wants her to come over a bit early so that he’ll have the opportunity to sit and chat with her a while. He just enjoys her company so much! (Jealous David should be getting a bit worried right now about his dad’s interest in his wife, but I guess he knows his dad is not the type.) After David leaves, Mario says to Abelardo what a good boy he is, and this is the first time he’s seen him truly in love. He was just lead astray for a bit by that shameless (sinverguenza) Roberto.

Bertha tries to stop David on his way out, wondering why he’s acting like this sham marriage is real. Roberto told her everything and she will not take that woman living here (as if it’s her house). David tells her that Roberto is an idiot and Gabi is his wife and will live in this house. Bertha, knowing the right buttons to push, wonders if it’s not important to him that Gabi and Carlos went away together to that solitary beach house. David turns into the Hulk and approaches her menacingly telling her to butt out of what’s not her business. And she better not dare mention it again!

Limon and Juan celebrate their purchase of the hotel. Limon tells Juan that Mario doesn’t seem like a bad guy. He treated him really well and seems to be a nice, simple guy who doesn’t put on airs. Juan agrees that he does appear that way, but thinks it must all be an act. He thinks Mario is two faced- acts nice to your face, then plunges the knife in your back when you turn around. He wonders if Limon thinks that what Mario did to him was so nice. Mario declared to the police that he saw him speaking to the maid. He wonders if that should have been enough justification for them to throw him in prison. (Hello JJ! He DID see you speaking with the girl. And it was Adolfo’s accusation, a bad lawyer, and the police who put you in prison. Not Mario’s truthful statement. Oh, whatever. Continue with your revenge rant.) Limon tries to get him to see that what’s done is done (ya pasó), but Juan won’t listen. He spent eleven years, ELEVEN YEARS, locked up for a crime he didn’t commit. Eleven years of suffering for his mother. Eleven years of not being able to be with her. He’ll never forget, NEVER! This rant is interrupted by Caramelo, who’s looking for Elsa. Seems she’s packed her bags and left when they were all sleeping. Juan is sure she’s returned to her apartment and leaves to bring her back.

Yolanda has once again, and unwillingly, returned to the Guillens’ apartment to find out if the girls are indeed selling Adolfo’s diamonds. She rings the bell and while waiting for an answer, drops her purse and is helped by gallant Leo, who’s on his way out. Knowing who he is, she gets nervous and flustered but is saved from further interaction with him when Gabi comes out. Leo, as always, gets a wistful look on his face when he greets Gabi, and asks if her father has returned. He then excuses himself, with a parting smile for Gabi. Yolanda asks Gabi if Leo lives in the building and Gabi confirms it. They head inside for some girl talk. Yolanda has heard the gossip that she’s getting married and has left her job, at least that’s what she heard from Adolfo. Gabi confirms this and that she is in fact already married, as of yesterday. Yolanda feigns surprise and asks for the details. She continues to act surprised when she finds out the groom is David Genoves. She then asks after Juli, and when Gabi tells her Juli went out to buy a few things, Yolanda fishes around to see if they’ve been spending diamond money. Gabi telling her that they have to buy things like the wedding dress on credit at the small neighborhood stores; that she does not intend to buy her father and sister a fancy condo and does not consider David’s money to be her money; and that she and David intend to live with Mario, does not fit with Adolfo’s picture of money grabbing jewel thieves. (Give it up already. They don’t have the diamonds!)

Leo enters his office, looking a bit depressed and distracted. Ramon shortly follows. He got information from one of Elsa’s neighbors about where she works. They’ll head there next. Ramon brings up another case they’ve been working on—diamonds that were reported stolen in L.A. (what a coincidence). One of the diamonds showed up here in Mexico, and the description of the guy who sold it matches with the description of Marcos. Leo is now more determined to find him, but once again seems distracted. He finally tells Ramon about Gabi marrying David, and Ramon’s answer is “I told you so.” Women care about money (la lana). You should have told her that you’re rich too. (These guys just don’t get it.)

Another guy who just doesn’t get it, Adolfo, is having a smoke and a coffee, when Yolanda enters saying her own version of “I told you so.” He was wrong. Those girls don’t have two dimes to rub together. They’re still living their poor lives, buying cheap clothes on credit. Adolfo is still not convinced. They’re just clever (listas), pretending in order to throw them off their scent. Yolanda insists and Adolfo glowers. Meanwhile, the real jewel interceptor and seller, Marcos, has just happily bought his trailer truck (camión) with some of his diamond money.

At Genoves Manor, Mario is so eager for Gabi’s arrival that he is waiting outside to open the car door for her and usher her in. Gabi as usual, looks a bit bemused by his attentions, but she treats him amiably. They head to the living room as he tells her she is now the owner/woman (dueña) of this house. He explains that his nieces also live there, but he hopes that Gabi won’t mind and that it won’t be inconvenient for her. Anyway, one day the girls will get married and move out. He wants them all to get along with each other. Gabi assures him she doesn’t mind at all, and that she’ll do her part to make sure they get along. He can’t contain his glee and tells her what a great affection he’s already developed for her. She says she feels the same for him. They smile at each other.

The one niece we know will do her part to make sure Gabi’s home life is not a happy one, has arrived at Roberto’s apartment hopping mad. Bertha wants to know why Roberto told her David and Gabi’s marriage was a sham. He says he didn’t know. His fake judge was ready to do the fake marriage. He thinks Mario intervened and brought the real judge. Bertha is once again amazed that good guy David was going to go through with a sham marriage, but is even more confused about why he’s now going along with the real marriage. The door bell rings, and it’s Adolfo. He’s VERY pleased to see Bertha and knows exactly who she is. She excuses herself and leaves, but Adolfo is left speechless and impactado. “Vaya. Vaya.” (Well, well.) He obviously likes what he saw. He wants to know if she’s a friend of Roberto’s and tells Roberto to invite her to the club that evening. (Dirty old man.) Now back to business. Adolfo wants to know how plans for killing Mario are coming along. Roberto admits it’s more difficult to plan now that he’s banned from the house, but Adolfo urges him to figure it out. He’s in a hurry (me urge) for Mario to disappear. Roberto better follow through if he doesn’t want problems with Adolfo. Uh oh!

David is seeing Gabi home to her door and she’s gushing about how wonderful and caring his father is. “And me? What about me?” She rewards him with a kiss and by telling him he’s the most marvelous man in the world. They are in the middle of sucking face in front of her open apartment door, when a shocked, scandalized and angry Fausto arrives. “GABRIELA!!!!” Uh oh!

Thank you, Vivi! Haven't had a chance to watch the show yet, but I wanted to post the You Tube links:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Also, I wanted to mention there's a correction to the previous summary: Dora said she fell in love when she was 17 years old, not 17 years before. Thanks to Newbie for rechecking the recording. :D

Vivi: Thank you for the great recap and for being so generous with you time and talent.

I loved watching Bertha having a real hissy fit. No wonder she can't find a boyfriend.

That was some dress that Alej had on. No wonder poor JJ is so smitten. JJ needs to stop taking his stupid pills. Surely, one day soon he will realize that Mario is really and nice guy. I am not sure he can do anything about Elsa. She is not one of my favorite people in this TN.

Thanks for the translation of vaya, vaya. I hear it all the time in these TN and could never figure out what it meant.

Rosemary

Loved the recap Vivi. You, Jeri, and Aribeth have an excellent way of engaging the reader with your descriptive paragraphs. I especially loved this line: "Mario wanders off to bed with a spring in his step and a song on his lips. It has been a very happy day for him." So Dora and Gabi both didn't out JJ yet. He should be grateful for that. I also want JJ to drop his revenge scheme on Mario. It wasn't Mario's fault he was put in jail. He only told the truth of what he saw; JJ talking with the maid before her death. I knew Elsa wouldn't stay at the hotel long. JJ can come and go and date whomever he wants but Elsa can't. I would've left too. I wonder since Gabi isn't available anymore if Leo will maybe take a liking to Juli?

Vivi, I like the moniker "Bitter Bertha." A lot was covered last night, and you did a terrific job recounting it in all its nuance. Thanks.

It's a delight to see Roberto and Bertha get the shiv. But now these two are probably going to put their heads together (because she doesn't know he's out to kill her uncle) and the evil folks are always smarter than the good folks in these things.

To me, JJ and Alejandra seemed to glow at the dinner party. Elsa doesn't have a chance. She should take Limon's advice. And speaking of Limon, I think Dora will become his other half.

On JJ's vengeance plan, I think he's enraged most by his mother's suffering all those years and dying before he got out. Plus, if I were a good, humble employee for a company, and the owner testified only that he saw me earlier with the murdered person and the owner did not help me obtain good legal counsel, and I was sentenced to 20 years, and I spent the next 11 years without even a visit or show of consideration from the owner, I would be enraged. I think JJ’s motivation is about having control -- now he's calling the shots. Even though he doesn't even know what the shots are, now they are all pawns in "his" game. At least, until he looks at Alejandra and goes all gooey. :>

Shame on JJ for his controlfreakdom with Elsa. Elsa, remember how nice Medina looked in that white robe and give him a call. It's much better than sulking. Whew, glad she wasn't home for Carlos' booty call intensions. But then, maybe it would have shown her once and for all who Carlos really is.

Niecie- I love your assessment of why JJ has some right to be mad at Mario. Great analysis. But why doesn't he focus on Adolfo, who actually lied to the olice about seeing Juan throw the girl over the railing? I also hope that Elsa can move on to Medina, but she has loved JJ for a long time (8 years). She, more than any of our other love sick characters, has a right to be heartbroken and needs some time to adjust. I really felt Leo's depression this episode too. He needs his daughter near him and a good woman as well.

Niecie- I'm actually more worried about Bertha and Adolfo teaming up, than her and Roberto. I'd like to think that learning they are trying to kill her uncle (who has been nothing but good to her) would give her pause, but she wants him dead as much as they do! She wants her inheritance from him and freedom to do whatever she wants (not like Mario controls her now).

Vivi, what a wonderful detailed and humorous recap. I loved your describing the opening scene to our Agatha Christie novela. Thanks so much. And I didn't realize David had driven Gabi back that night so there was no wedding night and no ....

Yeah, Dora and Gabi came through for J J, thank goodness. Hope Gabi doesn't say anything to David about J J but she probably won't until she has a chance to speak to J J whenever that will be...another secret.

Well, now we know you can't take J J out into public and for company. He needs to just look pretty and keep his mouth shut. I can understand his pent up anger but, unfortunately, he couldn't control it, especially, when he forcefully broke Mario's champagne flute. And his toast was totally not appropriate. He needs to cool down if he doesn't want to blow his cover.

Elsa is making problems for herself, as well. She doesn't want to seen as J J's sister so she is not taking his brotherly advice and she is courting trouble from Marcos and, unknowingly, Carlos, by returning home. I don't think Carlos will physically harm her but he is manipulative and devious.

I wondered why Adolfo was so animated in seeing Bertha at Roberto's... eeww, dirty old man? Well, Berth, he is rich and you are idle.

I continue to really enjoy this novela and looks like Fausto blows a fuse when he returns home. Well, I guess he had to learn sometime.

Vivi, beautiful, well done recap. I too felt like we were in an Agatha Christie novel while at the “Mystery Manor” boda dinner, there were so many sub-currents swishing around. Almost everyone was hiding SOMETHING! Also, I loved your play on words indicating the yet unrevealed parentage of both David and Gabi. “Mario stands to make the first toast (brindar) for the happiness of his child (children) and “Both Gabi and David beam happily and stand to toast with his (their) father” Yes, child/children, his/their said it all!

I for one am thrilled that this wonderful man Mario, who has the best interest of his “daughter” and “son” at heart, will (maybe!) have a few days/months of happiness before he succumbs to his illness. His unselfish joy for the novios was a pleasure to watch. Also, if Mario hadn't intervened in the false wedding, I would have had the unpleasant experience of watching a "galan" that I didn't like or respect for the duration of the novela......at least David came through at the end.

I need to start a “lie” diagram for this novela, I’m not sure that I’ll be able to keep up with all las mentiras that have been told by the characters, bad AND good. Juan Jose, you in particular have several “big ones” floating around, hope you have a good memory.......you too, Roberto!

Here's my 2 cents worth. I think David is Doris' son from that love affair when she was 17. I think Abelardo is sweet on Doris.

Is this only the 2nd TN that I have watched with EY but his roles always seem to have vengeance on the mind. Is that type-casting or what?

Barbara- I think we all agree that David is Dora's son. They've given us quite a few clues there. I would like for her to end up with a nice man too, and Abelardo is great. But Limon seemed to notice her too. :)

Thank you for the recap, Vivi!

Niecie, that was a great analysis.

Barbara:
Welcome here, woman, I was just thinking about you yesterday! :)

Is this only the 2nd TN that I have watched with EY but his roles always seem to have vengeance on the mind. Is that type-casting or what?

Hell yes.
- 1990, Yo compro esa mujer
Rodrigo Montes de Oca ruined my father, venganzaaa! But oops, his daughter (Leticia Calderón) is so cute...
- 1994, Guadalupe
The Zambranos murdered my whole family, so I'll ruin all of them! But oops, the long lost daughter (Adela Noriega) is so cute and loves me so much...
- 2006, LVO
Mario Genovés, venganzaaaa! But ehh, Alejandra is HOT!
- 2008, Fuego en la sangre
Bernardo Elizondo seduced and murdered my 17 years old, pregnant little sister. Venganzaaaa! But oops, his oldest daughter (Adela Noriega) is so cute, despite the awful wardrobe and the constant weeping...
- 2009, Corazón salvaje
Rodrigo Montes de Oca! Hate! Venganzaaa! But oops, his redhead daughter is the best lover of the seven seas. And the blonde one is quite cute...

Funny, Aribeth. This isn't officially vengeance or vengeance which lasted most of the novela, but remember E Y's role as Rodrigo Montalvo in Destilando Amor. He actually married a woman he didn't love (the bleached bimbo) as revenge/ vengeance when he unjustly thought his true love was a prostitute. Then he spent the entire novela trying to win his true love back but was encumbered by a wife. Haaa. haaa....but I do love that novela.

Oh, the good old Destilando. I loved the first 15 episodes, they were well directed, fast-paced, passionate and epic. But unfortunately the next 155 ones were boring and disappointing for me. By that time EY was very attractive and sometimes so cute that I could've eaten him with a spoon, but his character was an ultimate childish dumbass.
Anyway, the DA cast was great, and I liked Martha Julia, the slutty Barbie doll very much. :) It's interesting that our energetic, lovely Mina played that miserable girl in DA who slept with her uncle.

By the way, Destilando - have you seen this Cristina show?

Should of known it was Vivi doing the recap--it just went on and on deliciously detailing every move they made. Can't add a thing except a big thank you.

The only thing that jumped out at me was that Bertha was on Team Baddies now. She's going to be the in-house spy for poor Roberto who can't get in any longer.

Well, Papa is back. I have a feeling that Gabriela's marriage to David will compel him to come back to the make-up table. I wonder if the Diamond-Hustling-Duo will run into him at the house.

Methinks the trailer will become more important as time goes on. Why would they spend so much time on it and so little time on the guy that got caught with the last diamond--who wasn't as careful as Yolanda's pawn shop pal.

Thanks so much Vivi for the detailed recap.

I have been wondering. Can't Carlos find a woman from his own social class. He and Roberto must be real losers when it comes to attracting women and to keep them interested. Now Carlos is after Elsa. I sort of liked Carlos before because I thought he was serious in his liking of Gabi, but now his true colours are showing. He is just like Roberto a menace to good women after only one thing, yuk.

Well, well. Looks like Adolfo took a shine to Bertha. It's her lucky day. I really want to see that pairing, lol.

Caramelo looked so cute in that dress.

Margaret

Aribeth, thank you for the Christina D A links. Wish my Spanish were better in order to understand the conversations but such fun memories: Rod and his bumblebee shirt, Frankie the gigolo and, of course, E Y looking fine and more.

Margaret- I think you're on to something about Carlos and Roberto not being able to maintain relationships with women in their own social class. We've seen Roberto with Ale. He amused her for a while, and that seems how he managed to get her to go out with him. But it became clear that he sort of creeps her out, and she never felt much of anything for him. And all that even though he was always on his best, most polite/normal behavior around her. She still sensed that there was something wrong with him.

We've then seen Rob and Carlos with those two hot chicks by the pool. Probably not rich girls, but likely not as poor as Gabi and Juli either. Definitely "women of the world" (easy). Carlos seems to have an easy time with these girls (he's got money and a certain charm/they provide sex). But there is no challenge there for Carlos. He, like Roberto, seems to like to hold power over women. And Roberto still strikes out with these easy girls because he gives off a creepy/scary vibe.

Poor girls are easier to manipulate, control, and hold power over. Both of these guys have been controlled, put down, and verbally (and likely physically) abused by their fathers. They are emasculated by their fathers and can't stand up to them. Their fathers serve as poor role models (unlike David's). They do to these women what they see their fathers do to women, and what their fathers do to them. So far Carlos looks like he could be redeemed. He seems capable of love and empathy. Perhaps having Yolanda in his life helped. Roberto on the other hand, is totally immoral and depraved. Perhaps not having a mother contributed.

Vivi, thanks a million for fun-filled recap. What an episode, and your recap made it all the more interesting.I was glad when David showed up with the girls for the celebration dinner. He seemed so mad before.I also agree with Niece's assessment of JJ's anger.11yrs is a long time but loosing his mother was just too much. What he should remember and I believe Elsa put it well,is he met Don Goyo in prison and ended up been rich. The money will not bring mama back but it will sure make life easy. Forget this vengeance stuff,it will only make him bitter.
Poor Elsa,he still insists on treating her like a little sister.I would move out too. That dinner party was nice.It seems sides are been chosen.Good and Evil.Bertha is seriously flirting with dark forces. I was so glad when both Dora and Gabi decided to keep JJ's secret. They both know he is a good person.Ale deliberately dressed like that to drive JJ crazy.Good girl Elsa doesn't stand a chance. Bertha has a nerve doesn't she? telling David his marriage is false and she was not going to allow Gabi in the house.Isn't she a squatter herself? Where does she get off ordering anyone away from the house.I am sure Adolfo has plans for her.It would serve her right too. she is nasty.
Thanks again to Vivi,Jeri and Aribeth for allowing us to enjoy this show with your descriptive narratives.

I loved your recap, Vivi!! I hated it to come to an end, it was so interesting.

I know I sound like a broken record, but I think JJ cares for Elsa more than even he realizes and will end up with her.

He may be very attracted to Ale, but I think she is too sophisticated for him. I don't think he stands a chance with her.
I think he was also attracted to Gabi. I thought she was more in his league.

But I think Elsa is the best one for him. I guess I'm the only who thinks this.

Just had a chance to watch the show, and it was lovely. Thanks again for the gorgeous recap, Vivi. :-)

David and Gabriela got along so beautifully; and Alejandra was a total knockout, not to forget EY; but he always looks edible.

What I would like to forget is Adolfo's leering interest in Bertha. They're perfect for each other, but yuck-o! Can't stand to watch.

Juan José really has no idea what he's doing on any front; he should stand back and take a good look at the landscape.

What can I do but throw up my hands at his jealousy toward Elsa; bad, bad Juan José!

Ann, if they change the front credits with Juan José and Alejandra as a couple, then your scenario might have a chance. ;-) Until then, I wouldn't wager on it.

Thanks, Vivi, for that excellent recap. Tonight, I was finally able to watch last week's episodes, but this episode didn't record for some reason. I'd really like to see Elsa and JJ end up together, but it looks like that is not going to happen.

Ann,
I agree with you, Ale is too sophisticated for JJ. She is a beautiful, educated, hardworking, yet kind and loving woman. I can't imagine that she would find JJ, a man who can't even get his revenge scheme directed at the right person, interesting after the "honeymoon" is over!
It isn't so much that Elsa is RIGHT for JJ, it is that Ale seems WRONG for him. I think Aribeth (?) posted earlier that this director or producer has changed novios before in his novelas. You're correct Susanlynn, the opening credit pictures are a bit problematic for anyone who happens to be less than enthusiastic about the JJ/Ale pairing! At least this makes the novela interesting for me, I usually root strongly for the main couple to finally get together, this time I'm rooting AGAINST them (ha!) .....oh well, maybe things will change.

Vivi, I loved your thoughts on Carlos and Roberto and women. Maybe there is a chance for Carlos, after all he was trying to prevent Roberto from throwing or knocking the woman off of the hotel banister in the beginning. It would be nice to see him grow into someone who is good.

Oh yes, I'm glad that Gabi kept her cool at the party and didn't blurt out that JJ is using a different part of his name, but I hope that she eventually tells Mario or David of her suspicions, her first loyalty should be to her family, not some guy she met in a market and then later on a bus....my thoughts anyway. Gabi is a great heroine, she seems to really "get" people quickly, we don't have to worry about her instincts.

Thanks all for the recaps!

Well, I guess I am one of the few on Team Ale. I don't think we have seen enough of JJ and Ale together as themselves yet to judge. Of course, I am biased since I like the actress.

On Telefutura, they are just finishing a replay of Querida Enimiga, which has some LVO actors, including David/Alonslow. After that, my DVR shows that they are playing Mariana de la Noche again. This is the one novela with Ale as the main heroine if anyone is curious. I should warn it is a Meija production, but I think the gothic storyline does make it better than many of his novelas.

Vivi, read with interest your analysis on Carlos and Roberto and women. It was right on target. Their own fathers are such horrible examples to grow up with, no wonder they both have such warped views on women and their roles. Now I clearly see why they are friends.

Margaret

Pascal, I am a fan of Alejandra and Juan José, too. I did notice MdlN was replaying, but forgot she was in that; thanks.

I like JJ and Ale too. They definitely are attracted to each other and generate mucho heat. I think it's up to JJ whether or not they can go the distance. He needs to put his mind and skills to being and doing something productive, instead of focusing on some half-assed revenge scheme. I think Ale respects hard work. And she needs to lose some of her snobbery, although she is a good person at heart.

I wonder how she and Bertha will react once they find out that Gabi is their true cousin? Hopefully, Gabi and Ale will have become friends by then.

I had hopes that JJ and Juli would hit it off, since both of them have such a fun loving attitude. But he didn't seem to notice her at all during the dinner. But how could he notice anyone else when Ale had that dress on? :) And maybe that would just make too many women that JJ would be attracted to. Lol! Already he seems kind of flighty and horny with his interactions with Elsa, Ale and Gabi. But that's also understandable considering he just left prison.

Vivi, this was spectacular. What intricate detail! Also, the embedded vocabulary was greatly appreciated.

There were so many sweet, poignant moments in this and you captured their essence beautifully: "He can’t hide his excitement thinking of the day of the religious wedding ceremony, how beautiful everything will be, and above all how beautiful Gabi will be"...How lovely to have Mario so happy in his final days. I am hoping for a miracle so that he will have more time to enjoy his family.

"But if he recognizes who JJ really is, he does not let on." Exactly!! I can't tell if Mario recognizes Juan or not. Frustrating...

I'm constantly delighted by the mentioning of actors in their previous roles: "It's interesting that our energetic, lovely Mina played that miserable girl in DA who slept with her uncle". Thank you Aribeth! That was such a sad, depressing storyline and the actress was amazing. I would never have realized it was "Mina" in that role.

Vivi, thank you again! I'm so appreciative of your efforts.

JJ and Alejandra could be a really good pairing. He needs more sophistication and she's got that. She needs to unwind and be more playful and he's got that. Sometimes opposites do attract.

How ironic that JJ's scheming to ruin Mario, but it's Mario that "saves" JJ during the dinner party. When JJ was trying to riff about France (and hilariously stumbling)in response to the question about him being a man of the world, Mario simply changed the subject.

Vivi thank you for your wonderful recap and I loved your insightful post about Carlos and Roberto. I completely agree with you that Carlos can still be redeemed but we'll see.

As for the Elsa/JJ/Ale debacle, I stand firmly in team Ale. Not because I don't like Elsa because I do and I think EY has good chemistry with her too, I just don't think Juan José has been in his best behavior towards her and fails to see her as something else than a little sister he needs to protect. She needs a guy who would respect her position instead of imposing his will on her and I think that guy is Mr Medina. It must be quite hard after living alone for so many years to suddendly have someone come in and order you around as if he was your dad, uncle or like JJ likes to think of himself: a brother.

I can already see Ale putting JJ in his place if he ever tried that sort of thing with her. She is not only strong (which I think Elsa is too) but she has certain attitude and confidence that I think JJ finds alluring and even a little intimidating.

One plot point that requires a steel beannie from me is the Victoria Ocampo last name. I know both last names of characteres are never used in novelas but in real life we always used them for formal introductions, like for the dinner last night with the Genovés family, not to mention Ale should know both of JJ's last names since he is her client and there's also that contract signed which should have both last names on it to be valid (unless he only had one, meaning he wasn't recognized by his father or mother or that he was from another country). Ale could decide to stop doing any work at the house tommorrow and JJ wouldn't be able to ask for his money back!

Jarocha

Jarocha- I love you dropping in and giving us these cultural lessons. I knew all about the two last names (mother and father's), but the fact that not using both makes a document null and void is new to me. It makes total sense, but it's not something us one-last-named norteamericanos would even think of.

Vivi and Jarocha--Good points.

One of my very good SA friends complains that the custom of a woman in the United States (and some other northern European countries) dropping her maiden name when she takes on a married name. It makes it almost impossible to keep track of old classmates--especially if they marry a second or third time--or trace family lines.

He thinks the Spanish custom of a woman keeping her maiden name and adding her husband's when she marries is much more enlightened.

After all our parents gave us first names that for good or bad are supposed to go with our last names (harmony, aliteration, family tradition, etc.).

I agree 100%, except in my case, where I flat out did not like my maiden name and couldn't wait to have it disappear.

complains that the custom of a woman in the United States (and some other northern European countries) dropping her maiden name when she takes on a married name

Oh, I hate it. In my country -né means Mrs. For example, Kovács János's (= John Smith) wife is called Kovács Jánosné.
Nowadays women have a choice.

1. She uses her maiden name. Most husbands aren't happy about that. Kiss Júlia. (Julia Little)

2. She uses her first name and the surname of her husband. Like my mother did. Kovács Júlia. No, that's not her name. She's Georgina. :)

3. Husband's surname + né + her maiden name.
Kovácsné Kiss Júlia, like my sister. It's freaking long and when both of them are lawyers or physicians it makes their life more different:
dr. Kovácsné dr. Kiss Júlia :)

4. Husband's surname, hyphen, her maiden name.
Kovács-Kiss Júlia, like a friend of mine. Too long.

***
5. Men can use the name of their wife as well.
Kovács-Kiss János.

I like the Latino solution of the problem though here we often mock the Spanish names that are longer than the Fifth Avenue. :)
Juan de Dios Montes de Oca San Román Aldama de la Cruz.

Hmmmmm....in my HUMBLE opinion, it isn't a contest between Elsa and Ale, JJ has shown no interest in Elsa, none what so ever. I find Ale to be a very educated, hardworking, accomplished woman. In real life, I think that, LONG TERM, she might become bored with JJ, as they say, "after the fire is gone!" JJ has been wonderful to little Caramelo, Limon and a great big brother to Elsa, but his mental candle burns dim to me, hers burns brightly. Maybe I'm projecting my thoughts onto Alejandra and certainly there are many "opposite" couples in the world. Novela novios do seem to live happily ever after, no matter what their differences, good for them!

Niecie, I agree with you thoughts on Mario, he was such a dear during the novio dinner. He seemed to hesitate a moment, then made everything good by skipping over JJ's comments on France....Mario is a jewel!

Vivi I think two last names helps alot to identify the person: For example, there must be alot of Juan Pérez but one could be Juán Perez Hernández, Juan Pérez García, Juán Pérez Guillén, etc. So that's why it's important for official documents to put both last names as well as all the first names the person may have. Just by knowing you grand parents names you can find alot of family you didn't know before, it's happened to me alot.

I have four names in total, two first names and two last names (as it is the most common here) and when I was in Canada and had to write my name I used to take a pause to decide if I should write both of my last names or just one everytime I had to handle some paperwork. You should have seen the look of my teacher when I first introduced myself, she was young and it was her first time with an international group.

Aribeth: I find it very interesting that the family name goes first, I remember this also happens in the chinese culture. The hyphen sounds the best to me but I'm used to long names hehe. It may seem hard but it's quite easy to get used to knowing everybody's names, some combinations sound very good to my ears.

Sandy I agree, that Ale seems like someone who could tire of JJ but I think he has alot of sweetness and a type of humbleness she may not find easy in her usual environments.
