La Fea Más Bella #105-106 11/29/10 11/29/2010. Happy Days.

Capitulo 105.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Luigi tells Fernando he has to leave for Germany immediately or FIFA won’t let them film what they need for Sport Wind.

2. Fernando can’t think up what to put into a card for Lety so he draws her a teddy bear that looks as forlorn as Fernando is when she’s not around. Again he’s very scared she won’t like it, but she’s so moved she almost cries. He’s touched because just a simple sketch makes her so happy.

3. Fernando goes to the cave just to be close to Lety, and he can’t keep his hands off her. His mom calls about the wedding house and Lety tells him MamaT asked Lety to send them chipotle chilies, but Fernando knows she’s lying.

4. They have to shoot the underwear commercial without Luigi, and they need to arrange a location, top model, horse, film crew, the works! All by tomorrow. Their second-string directors are out of country.

5. Sara tells Alicia to book rooms for the film crew in Germany, but she doesn’t speak German nor English. The cuartel actually works. Celso brings two workers who want to donate for Alicia’s poverty, but she treats them scornfully because they don’t donate enough.

6. The cuartel says they will produce the underwear commercial. Fern is moved by their complete support. Lety says they don’t have any other options, so Fernando accepts. Fern walks up behind Ali while she tries to order the cuartel back to their desks, but Fern puts Ali in her place and reminds her that Lety is her superior.

7. In the car, Lety is depressed over the wedding house, and Fernando is angry because Lety lied to him about Teresita’s call. He says, “You’re hiding something from me. I’ve tried to be frank with you and tell you my true feelings, and you go and lie to me.” Lety gets out of his car and walks away with a very sad puppy face.

Capitulo 106.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando kisses his car goodbye and chases Lety’s bus through DF. Hijinks ensue. As soon as he catches up with her, he reprimands her for throwing a tantrum and leaving his car. Fernando bluffs their way onto a movie shoot

2. The cuartel works on logistics for the commercial.

3. Fernando plays the gay hairdresser until the director yells at Lety and grabs her hand, then mild mannered Clark Kent changes to Super Fernando and slugs the director.

4. Ali tries to hock her jewels. She expects 500,000 pesos for her necklace, but the pawn broker offers her 300, punto, and she refuses. Her jewels are all fake, implying that her mother was as phony as Alicia.

5. Fernando and Lety share a good laugh about their day, until they see Fern’s car being towed. They get the car back but get lost. Thugs try to carjack them, but Lety scares them off with her M-16.

The summary for tomorrow’s first hour (Cap 107).
1. Alicia wakens Marcia to tell her the cuartel is making an X-rated movie.

2. The cuartel auditions models, but Alicia tells the models it’s all a joke and there is no job, so they all leave. Ali also locks Jazmín in a dressing room so that Alicia is the only remaining model candidate.

Nothing else happened. Nothing. Tomorrow from 12 to 1, organize your sock drawer. Or defrost your freezer. Or gaze at your navel. ANYTHING you do will be a better use of your time! Tomorrow’s second hour (Cap 108) is much better.

Jenn asked about Jaime Camil's tattoos. Here is a picture of his palette.

Background.

Luigi refers to Omar and Fernando as Pituka & Petaka. They were part of a children’s show some years ago. Here is the Wiki page about the show. I couldn’t find many YouTube clips on them; this was the best I found.

The World Cup, which is held every four years, was held in Germany in 2006, so LFMB tied in with that. FIFA is the governing body of World Cup soccer. In Mexico it’s generally called “Mundial.”

The movie set technician in the striped shirt looks JUST like Exiquio, a guy I know from Chihuahua. What a charmer he was!

In the traffic jam, I give Fernando one point for, and one point against. He had to choose between his car and Lety, and he chose Lety – remember that he loves his car more than Marcia. OTOH he told the Chilango that he had to follow her because she “carries” something he needs to know. He doesn’t consider how upset she must be if she would walk away from his car in traffic. IOW Fernando is motivated by his selfish love; it’s all about his needs, with no thought to how she might be feeling.

For another indicator of Fernando’s selfish love, look at his reaction when he fears Lety found the letter (today and previous shows). He worries that she’ll take revenge, tell his parents, etc. The question of how hurt she would be doesn’t even occur to him. I’ve said many times, Fernando’s prime directive is, “Lety must not suffer.” The problem is, that only works when he NOTICES her suffering. There are many times, such as when he was flirting with Paty Manterola, that Lety suffers and Fernando is clueless because he’s so self absorbed.

Thanks Paula and Amanda. There was so much cartel today that it really was hard to watch. There were a couple funny moments. Actually I thought one of the funniest scenes was when Alicia was trying to find a translator and thought she needed two. One to speak German and one to speak Spanish.

Also when Lety pulled the gun on the car thieves and Fernando ended huddled up with the thugs and Lety had to call him over to her.

Paula I agree with you about the first hour of tomorrow. I work so I know I will be fast forwarding much of that episode when I get home.

Thanks again Paula.

Lety and the gun was hilarious but the rest of the day was just tedious junk. Good observation about Fern's love being selfish. I've always thought it was because he doesn't know how to love. He certainly didn't have good role models. Part of his growth has to be learning to be less self absorbed.

I can't believe anyone would think that the cuartel, plus Simon and Celso would be able to pull off a successful commercial. I did have to laugh against my will with Simon and that odious Olarte bickering about who was in charge.

I think at this stage Fernando cannot be anything but selfish. He is the only child of rich self-centered parents. He is good looking and charming, gets what he wants and does not really need to worry about the feelings of others. But I think falling in love with Lety will change all that. I am surprised he has not asked her to change on even a slight level. Wear different clothes, her hairstyle, get contacts etc. I think that makes me overlook his selfish love. I wonder if this story will play out like Pride and Prejudice where Mr. Darcy when he falls in love with Elizabeth realizes he has to change to be worthy of her. He doesn't have to but wants to and that makes the difference between a run the mill love story and literature! After all he has everything and can marry whoever but if he wants to be with Elizabeth, he wants to change to be worthy of her. Of course Elizabeth goes through her own transformation. Now I have Jaime Camil and Colin Firth dueling it out in my mind!
And Paula, being the Jaime Camil- all-you-need-to-know go to person, what is his favorite color? and most importantly inquiring minds want to know what his tattoo is about!
Jenn

Jenn, rather than P+P, I've heard Fea compared to Jane Eyre instead. I'll let you mull that one over.

Camil's favorite color? You've stumped me. As for the tattoos on his right arm, in order of acquisition:
1. The large word is the name of the Hindu warrior caste.
2. A stylized cross.
3. An infinite knot (I think that's Buddhist).
4. The schmutz, on either side of the cross: the name of Greek philosopher Epicuro de Samos, and the Nietzsche's phrase, Lo que no mata fortalece (what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger).
5. Below the elbow, a ring or "C." I think it's Japanese.
6. He says (I've never seen it), on his right ribs, the phrase, "Live Simply, Love Generously, Care Deeply, and Speak Kindly." He actually seems to stick to that advice pretty well.
7. There is another he didn't mention. It's also on his right ribs and it's about the size of the knot on his arm, but I've only ever gotten a brief glimpse of it.

Here is a segment of a chat he did, where he describes his tattoos. I'll post a picture of his arm in the recap.

And Jenn, do you want to know why I'm such a big Camil fan? It's not por guapo nor por talent though he has plenty of both. It's his exuberance, the way he bungee jumps into life. It fascinates me. It moves me like a freight train passing a bicycle.

A few observations:

Alicia said Humberto & Teresita would be scandalized if they saw the cuartel in the board room. In contrast, Fernando said his father would be proud if he saw the cuartel pitching in.

In the production meeting, notice that Lety doesn’t sit with the cuartel. She is no longer a part of them.

Fernando has always won women with his money, power, and looks, and he has great confidence in those strong suits. But with Lety when he gives himself (the card he wrote, the sketch he drew), he’s very apprehensive that it won’t measure up because nobody has ever valued him for him. But Lety is euphoric when he gives her those things because she just wants Fernando, not all the trappings. Finally someone fills Fernando’s great hunger to be loved. They are sooo right for each other.

Paula you are encouraging this unhealthy obsession with Camil!!And my Spanish is not good enough to appreciate his musings on his tattoos!! I do agree with you that what makes him attractive and even good looking is his exuberance for living. He reminds me of someone I once knew who was also high on life and it is very infectious and you just wanted to be in their presence because...anyway I digress.
You made an important point about how he is confident of his looks, position, money to win over women but not himself without all of those trappings. That is Mr. Darcy!! He was sure Elizabeth was going to accept his proposal because he was rich, handsome, and had status. When she refused him, he did some serious soul searching. I was never a fan of Jane Eyre too dark and the fact that Jane was rewarded with someone who tried to seduce her after he had gone blind and lost his edge. And before you say it, Fernando is not dark he will never lock a crazy wife in the attic even if it is Marcia(I am not sure Camil can play dark, can he?)Yes he tried to seduce Lety but then she wanted to be seduced. Does he loose his edge and become a whimpering lost soul that Lety has to lead around?? What horror??
Jenn

Thanks for the recaps, they helped tie the fun scenes together while I fast forwarded through a few of the filler parts. Mostly I thought it was a very lively episode. Thank you for the heads up for tomorrow. I won't waste much time on the first hour and will tune in to the second.

It's funny how Fernando can be quaking in his boots one second and then play the hero in another.

Jenn, I like your comparison to Pride and Prejudice. So far it tracks quite well. Both Camil and Colin Firth dueling it out in your mind? Whew!! Firth is my favorite Mr. Darcy of all time (so far).

Paula, very interesting commentary on Camil's tattoos. I loved the link. He's adorable.

I have to agree about JC but I suspect his charms are lost on men. He has appeared here in my city several times but not since LFMB or I would have been in line in a New York minute. One of our local papers shut down last year and the entertainment editor wrote a column about the best and worst shows he had covered. He said Jamie's show was the worst and then added insult to injury saying he was also the worst interview he ever had. The guy is Latino who often wrote about cheesy novelas but even he got ticked when a magazine leaked pictures of the long awaited transformation. I chalked up his comments to jealousybac over our tan divino JC.

Decie girl, I'm just curious. The Camil interview that the editor said was his worst - was that immediately after Fea? During that period, um, um, let's just say that was not the most admirable period in Camil's life. Other than that period, he always gives lively, gregarious, entertaining interviews.

And Jenn, I'll have to ignore your two plot questions,
A. "I wonder if this story will play out... Mr. Darcy when he falls in love with Elizabeth realizes he has to change to be worthy of her."
B. "Does he loose his edge and become a whimpering lost soul?"

I could definitely see this story branch either way. And Gaitán is a GREAT story weaver, so he could really do justice to either scenario.

Paula, now you have me hanging! What happened to Camil in the period after LFMB ended. You were too cryptic, please expand.

Anon, from what I've observed, Jaime really does follow the wisdom of his tattoo, "Speak kindly," so I owe him the same respect. By the end of Fea, he'd been working 80-90 hour work weeks for 14 months, if you can imagine the exhaustion. With Fea he went from being a well known name to being the biggest sensation in Mexico. It was too much too fast, and it went to his head. The good news is, within a year he recovered and put his feet back on the ground. In fact, I suspect he came away from the experience older and wiser. From what I can observe, he seems like a pretty decent guy overall.

BTW, I base my conclusions on his own words - in interviews, in his tweets, and in his live chats. I don't believe ANYTHING in the gossip media.

I am falling way behind LFMB in my YSBLF scene translations but for those interested in a slight comparison, I just translated the scenes of the fight with Roman and the gang... you can find them in telenovela-world.com betty la fea forum.

wow, that moment when he gave her the drawing thinking she would not think much of it compared with the gifts and cards, and how she was elated that he had drawn something for her (Moty)... his facial expression of surprise at her elated reaction and his mumbling to himself that she would be so moved by just a drawing were priceless!! I wish there were more moments like this in YSBLF, but in that one it went almost right from the second night together to problems, so not much 'happy days' time ...
thanks for the info about Camil's tatoos, Paula, Love the line:
Live Simply, Love Generously, Care Deeply, and Speak Kindly

Paula,
Thanks for the explanation. I too only believe what is read in his interviews or live chats (twitcams).

For all you Camil fans have you seen this interview? If he does star on Broadway I am there!
