La Verdad Oculta #073: Carlos the Fall Guy

An agitated Gabriela on her way to David's room alarms Doris, who then alarms arriving "Mario" and Abelardo by observing Gabriela returned from somewhere looking upset. In David's room, he notes immediately Gabriela's demeanor, and she must explain her shocking conclusions from the article at the newspaper archive.

He reassures her Santiago didn't murder anyone; that Santiago told David himself he was innocent, surprising her. Gabriela rushes away to learn from her dad why he told David but never the girls; and when David reveals what just transpired to Dora, Santiago and Abelardo, a distraught Santiago speeds home to meet Gabriela.

At Leonardo's, he introduces new housekeeper Mrs. Gumen to Paula. He is just discussing with Paula whether she should stay permanently with him when the bell rings, and it's Juan José. Leonardo sends Paula up to Julieta's at Juan José's agitation that Dora wouldn't talk; and he suspects Juan José knows something more.

When Leonardo deduces Juan José could easily have called instead -- Juan José balks, assuring next time he will certainly call first and quickly exits. Yolanda scopes out Carlos's new digs in his absence, unnerving the maid, despite claiming to be "like" his mother. Carlos hasn't laid in a bottle of creme de menthe yet.

Finding Santiago's apartment empty, Gabriela unsuccessfully seeks him at Leonardo's; but instead introduces herself to Paula, who likes Gabriela right away. Back upstairs, Gabriela sits sobbing and must only wait a moment till Santiago arrives, when they both embrace sobbing.

She assures him of her trust he's innocent, and he confirms the woman in the grave is her mother. Gabriela's surprised to hear that besides Yolanda, David and Mario, Leonardo also knew -- but didn't tell her because Santiago begged him not to. He anticipated waiting until they had evidence against Adolfo, he reveals.

When Gabriela frets her false name makes her marriage invalid, Santiago insists that can be remedied if she wants -- that David has been wonderful and is a great guy. Wretched Santiago grieves over his life as a fugitive, while Gabriela regrets tearfully she and her sister could have shared his pain.

Carlos arrives home and warmly greets waiting Yolanda, wondering about her mission there. She wants to patch things up with his father and get Carlos to compromise a little -- such as for example, giving up the trefoil ring; but Carlos is suspicious: why this and why now -- and demurs.

He's unhappy Yolanda confessed his job-hunting failure to Adolfo; but when she reports Adolfo will reinstate Carlos at the club on certain conditions, Carlos reluctantly agrees. Carlos wonders why a good woman like Yolanda doesn't get out of all this, and she will only sadly claim it's too late.

Carlos exits, claiming cryptically he intends to learn why the police are investigating them. Julieta returns home to be faced with the horrifying truth Gabriela just learned, thrusting Julieta into shock and tears -- and hurt that no one told them! Learning the fugitive is really Adolfo, she frets what they will do.

Across town, Adolfo phones and surprises Roberto, ordering him to insinuate himself with the waitresses and get a picture of their father. And he orders that Roberto bribe a phone employee to get Susana's supposed private number. At Julieta's, she confuses and angrily slams the door on visiting Carlos.

He had said he wanted to make amends to Gabriela and ask why Leonardo is looking for him; but she completely stumped him by accusing maybe it's because they perpetrated the shootout -- and a crime that happened 20 years ago! The 20-year figure has him scratching his chin in the hallway alone to the back of the door.

Outside below in the parking lot, Carlos encounters Roberto, who at first razzes him thinking Carlos would be moving in on the near-widow already. But Carlos shuts him up fast wondering if Adolfo sent him there to have Leonardo killed again -- and especially informing him the policeman resides there, whereupon Roberto absconds.

At Adolfo's, Roberto claims no one at home at the waitresses's and failure to locate his phone company acquaintance. Roberto's nervousness disconcerts Adolfo; and Roberto is just re-declaring his loyalty, even confiding he might confess his troubles -- when Bertha descends, interrupting.

Roberto quickly exits, with Adolfo lying to Bertha that he came visiting Carlos. When Bertha irritably objects to Yolanda's presence in his business, Adolfo simply explains she's useful and changes the subject, asking about Mario's illness. She jokes snidely that Mario's sick alright -- in the head!

She can possibly learn the doctor's name; but first she startles Adolfo with some things bothering her: how did Leonardo know she took the photos -- and on Adolfo's account? And when she reveals Leonardo's claims the photos are smuggling evidence, Adolfo quickly fakes embarrassment and agrees coyly that indeed they are.

But not against him, he lies -- but against Carlos! And what's more Adolfo lies that he ordered Carlos from the house for it and that he must loyally protect his son. Understandably, when Bertha is astounded at Carlos's supposed actions, Adolfo insists she keep it absolutely mum and stares at her confusion pensively.

Recovering but still weak David tells Gabriela in his hospital room to prepare herself with Mr. Rubina at the Mirador for learning to manage the Genovés businesses during his recovery, which may be months or even years. She's extremely intelligent, able to do anything she sets her mind to; and he trusts her, David contends.

When Gabriela haltingly points out they are not legally married now because of her false name, David only cares that she belongs to him. He kisses her hand, and Gabriela bends to kiss his lips. At Mauricio's studio, he multi-tasks, discussing the uncomfortable trip situation while blissing Elsa out with a shoulder rub.

The phone rings, and it's Garnica saying his American yachting investors will dock tomorrow; and Elsa is trying to back out of the trip again, but Mauricio's assures her he knows she's still struggling being in love with Juan José. But he loves Elsa and will help her; she agrees she must learn to separate personal from business.

At lunch at Juan José's, he rockets out of his chair on every ringing phone, and it's Garnica (as lawyer) about the trip. Caramelo is excited they will go to the beach early and lobbies for Chicles and Asunción, as well; Chicles gets an invite, and they'll locate and tell his dad at the cantina, because he lost his butcher shop job.

Mauricio et al must catch a different flight than Garnica, it turns out; about 15 minutes apart. At the hospital, the doctor puts David's good progress down to excellent physical condition and is confident his recovery should go well; but he warns for absolute bed rest and no wheel chair yet.

After the doctor exits, David confides to Gabriela the pleasant surprise that Dora is his mother. At Juan José's, Asunción assures disappointed Caramelo he'll stay behind but keep the rats at bay; he'll phone her and send her a letter with his thumb print on it -- since he can't write, they all joke.

Adolfo meets Zaida at a bar, where he declares that Bertha's just a kid, unlike Zaida who's a grown woman. And Bertha's not after Carlos, who doesn't reside with him anymore. He reminds Zaida she offered to help him, and she happily agrees to do him a favor in return for whatever she wants, with his hand on her thigh.

After ascertaining Zaida's not involved with Garnica, he explains the blackmail letter and asks her to find and retrieve it for him. A quick call on her cell phone confirms Garnica's out of town on business. Later in his car, Adolfo makes an urgent call ordering a hit in Puerto Vallarta as soon as possible, without a trace!

Good evening. :-) There's a concept in tonight's episode that, as far as I know, we don't generally have an analog for in the US, which is the "hemeroteca," or a dedicated, free-standing newspaper archive.

In my experience, in the US the newspaper archives are either in the periodical sections of libraries or at the newspaper morgues themselves.

The prefix "hemero-" derives from Greek for "day" as in "daily," like daily newspapers.

Here are the You Tube links for Episode 73:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

P.S. At that link can also be found that "hemero/a" is the root word for "ephemera" and "ephemeral," meaning things that don't last a long time (as in only for a day).

Jeri, thanks for the recap and info on "hemeroteca"

That Adolfo is a mess. I mean I know he's evil but I do enjoy his typically calculated ruthlessness: setting up Carlos as a fall guy, using Bertha, manipulating anyone in his path and ordering hits. In the animal kingdom, he'd be one of those creature who eat his own offspring.

I'm glad Gabi took the news about her Dad well. She also was able to help Juli process this revelation. However, I do see not revealing everything to them potentially being a problem.

Medina is such a prince. He just waits patiently for poor Elsa to recover her heart. TNs need more guys like him floating around for all the girlfriend side kicks.

Well I see from the photos that “our” Leo is in Eva Luna too! Is he a crime fighter in that novela as well? Ha

I don’t know when I have ever seen such a beautiful transformation in a character as what we are seeing in David. He has gone from an impulsive, angry, jealous guy to a calm, loving and trusting husband (kinda husband, when they get the names and boda straightened out!) He even OK’ed Gabi’s working with the managers at JJ’s hotel. She will have a lot of responsibility on her shoulders, but she can do it. I feel terrible for her though, the worst secret, the fact the Fausto isn’t her biological father is still unknown to her. That will be a life altering revelation. I’m so glad that she got to know Mario and liked him, that will help. Her coincidental reassurance to David that he was loved by his adoptive family will be the very words that she needs in the future.

That Adolfo is one smooth operator, he is a sociopath for sure. Too bad, he is an attractive guy, if you like geezers, and I do, at my age I have to! Ha

Jeri, thanks for the recap and especially the information on the free standing newspaper archive. You even provided the root word, a real journalistic move! THANKS

The nephew is gone, boo hoo! His flight had trouble leaving the airport yesterday, but it finally did. It was a nice Christmas.

Adolfo is a fabulous villain; I like that analogy to the animal kingdom, Karen. There definitely is precedent in nature.

Sandy, I've seen Julio in a number of roles; but this is the only time that I've ever found him particularly attractive! I guess I'm with you on that; I can indeed see what they see in him. He's smooth and capable.

David stepped up when he was needed. I think it's been lo many years since he was ready to take over things, but he chafed irritably under Mario's lead and the noxious contract. Like Queen Victoria and son Edward, who never amounted to much because of her long rule.

I think neither Harry Geithner nor Arturo Carmona will ever best Leonardo or Mauricio in any show. If they do, I'd like to see it.

Jeri- Thank you for this lovely recap, and for going above and beyond giving us information about hemeroteca. They kept saying the word, and I got the gist of it, but was too lazy to look it up. :)

David really has transformed into a calm, almost Zen, husband. He really helped to calm Gabi down before she spoke to Fausto. And not a flicker of jealousy when Gabi told him about working for JJ, but instead encouragement. It's also good that Gabi and Fausto had time to talk before Juli returned. Gabi served the same purpose for Juli as David did for her. Did you notice Juli's new hairdo when she returned? Her hair is now lighter, the curls are blown out, and she has bangs. Perhaps she's trying a more "mature" style to get Leo to think of her differently?

I really like that Carlos is starting to make amends (or at least trying), as well as asking questions. Looking forward to when the girls and he know that they are siblings.

Can Mauricio please come to my house and give me a massage? Please..... :) Snap out of it Elsa! The JJ ship has sailed, and you only had tickets for steerage on that ship. The God Ship Mauricio is in your port and is luxury private yacht.

Harry G. (Leo) is playing the good hearted, bullshitter, chauffer/best amigo of the galan in Eva Luna. It's a cute and funny role, but no match for his Leo. And both roles are way better than the slimeball he played in Dinero. I can't believe I love him so much in this, and hated him so much in Dinero.

Steerage! Ha! Good one.

I've noticed before novelas to use hairstyles as a signal of change in a woman's status.

A common one is that her hair comes off her shoulders and on top of her head when she gets married.

Or once she and the galan have consummated their relationship, she gets a sexier style -- which sometimes comes with a lower neckline, as well.

It's one of those symbolic gestures that telenovelas are cultured with.

P.S. Does anybody think that because they made such a point of putting our heroes on a separate flight from Garnica, that Adolfo's hit will take the form of blowing up Garnica's plane -- and not our heroes's?

Thank you, Jeri!

which sometimes comes with a lower neckline, as well

I'll never forget Kat's fabulous comment about CS:
And who knew that a night of love making with Juan could turn a girl from a buttoned up, covered up shy virgin, to a buxom Bridgitte Bardot. :)

I’ve moved from having patience with Elsa to being completely annoyed with her. Vivi, you said it well...“The (Good)Ship Mauricio is in your port and is luxury private yacht.” Yes! REALLY Elsa, you need to speed up your recovery from your NON romance with JJ. He has given you no hope. If you still need to talk a little about it, pick up the phone and call your BFF, leave your reluctant little shrugs at home.

Jeri, there is something fishy about the separate flights. I hope we don't have a crash and then some weeks in survival mode like Sorti!

I've just ruined a 9 X13 dish of 7-layer dip, the salsa I bought for it is sweet. They are putting sugar in EVERYTHING today. I wish I had tasted the salsa before I poured it on...Boo

Aribeth- I was actually the one that made that comment on CS. :) But glad to be associated with the witty Kat any time.

I wondered about Juli's hair change since nothing has happened between her and Leo yet, except that she admitted to her sis that she is falling in love. I hope he gives her some real encouragement soon, and that he doesn't take as long to get over Gabi as Elsa is taking to get over JJ.

The whole trip to the beach seems like a set up for lots of action. Maybe the drama will all start with the separate flights?

So sorry about your dip Sandy. Is there no way to save it? I'm sure it doesn't taste that bad. No?

Gabi's change after "becoming a woman" came in the form of her clothes, not her hair. She no longer wear jeans, only slacks and loose tops, and those lovely wrap dresses that enhance her curves, but don't cling to them like her jeans and t-shirts did.

Vivi: *headdesk* Oh, I'm sorry! Kat recapped the "Juan and Reggie finally did the deed" episode, maybe that's why I was confused.
Anyway, it was a priceless comment! :) Buxom BB, LOL.

I prefer the previous hairstyle of Juli.
As for Gaby, her new clothes are very beautiful an elegant. She's perfect.

Galilea is such a voluptuous gal; amazing how she is so stacked and yet fit.

Sandy, I love those 7-layer salads. I need one of those straight-sided glass bowls. I'd eat it, with sweet salsa!

I feel sorry for Carlos; I hope Yolanda can protect him. She's going to have to come off the fence at some point, and he might be the catalyst she needs.

Vivi and Sandy the ship analogy with Medina is great. I didn't realize Elsa was dragging her feet that badly but as you note she better get on this new boat fast.

I too enjoy David's change and depth of character. This is such a good role for Gabriel. I hope he'll able to get another like this b/c he's been excellent here whereas based on QE and Sorti I wouldn't have thought him up for it.

Funniest scene in last night's episode: JJ at Leo's apartment. First Paula calls him a hothead, like Fausto. Then Leo gives him one of his looks, and questions whether JJ is hiding something from him. JJ's stammered answer: "No, no. Si. Si. No, no."

LOL!

Excellent recap Jeri. I agree what David has really matured in leaps and bounds. I suppose it took him nearly loosing Gabi and his life to put things into perspective.

I prefer Juli's old hairstyle. Perhaps she did change it in hopes that Leo will see her more as his equal and not as a gal pal.

I have to admit Adolfo is smooth which does make him attractive. It's no surprise he's setting Carlos up for the fall. I'm thinking this beach trip will definitely be unforgettable with the hit he placed on Garnica.

I too enjoyed the ship and yacht analogy of Elsa's choice between JJ and Medina, Vivi. Excellent.

Thanks for all the condolences on the 7-layer dip! I plan to serve it anyway for a tailgate today, I’ll notice, but most likely no one else will! Live and learn.... My orange and white UT sugar cookies are great so all is not lost.

There was some satisfaction in seeing Juli blow off Carlos. She and her sister were considered “just waitresses” by Carlos et al, now their stars are rising and his is teetering on an abyss. He needs to start making good decisions now before is it too late.

There are so many laughs in this novela. Aribeth pointed to this yesterday, but JJ and Asuncion with the video camera was hysterical. I shouldn’t mention this, but didn’t JJ pretend to be going to the bathroom while placing the camera at the drop off, that was funny too. EY has a good deal of comedic timing.

Hey everyone. Jeri, We need you to keep giving us a dose of Spanish on the run, plus all the great recaps.

I like the new David, too. I guess we'll have to wait and see if the change is permanent once he's up and about and learns what Avila has done to Gabi's and his family.

Why does Leo need a housekeeper in that tiny apartment when he has Juli at his beck and call (this is rhetorical, not a real question).

Actually, we don't know how or for whom Adolfo is arranging his latest hit--only that it is going to be in Puerto Vallarta. Lots of luck this time; he did such a bang up job last time that he lost his two henchmen and made Leo really mad.

We know he wants to get rid of Garnica and JJ. The separate planes might just be a red herring, or the fact that they arrive at slightly different times will save Medina and Elsa from harm.

What I haven't sorted out is who is going with whom as couples--it seemed at first that Caramelo was going with Elsa and Medi, but now with Chiclet going, it seemed last night that JJ and Ale were in charge of the tykes.

When Medina had to get the separate tickets, he told Garnica "they" would be on different planes, but didn't say who would be on which plane.

It'll be interesting to see the interaction between Garnica and JJ, with Garnica knowing that JJ cheated him and JJ not knowing.

BTW--I sometimes catch the last 10-15 min. of LLena before watching Eva and I may be mistaken, but the young girl who is with the little boy, Christian, sure looked and sounded like an older Caramelo. When you figure that LVA was made what, 3 years ago, and Llena is recent, it could be. Does anyone know who plays Caramelo and the girl in Llena?

Way OT--In Amor real, Matilde and Manuel's son is played by another adorable child. Does anyone know what has happened to him (or know who he is)?

My dad was a UT alum (Engineering '47). Wherever we lived, he was always looking for a Vols game on TV.

I'm kind of inured to everybody razzing Asunción about his illiteracy, but they had another one of those going at the dinner table in this ep; and it turned out kind of cute, with the thumb print comment.

But with all the jokes about it, I just wonder what it's building to, if anything.

Will he just learn how to read -- or will something important hinge on his inability? It's already come into play in a crucial situation.

Newbie, from what I understand, at least in the past, just about everybody in Mexico who is not a "chacha" has one.

Short for "muchacha," i.e. "girl," or maid. If you look at the English word, we don't think about it anymore, but it does mean "girl," too.

I've heard that Americans that move down to Mexico have a hard time locating automatic dishwasher detergent, since everyone who would own a dishwasher has a chacha instead.

Thanks for the recap Jeri. And the info on hemeroteca, I didn't know there wasn't an analog for that in the US. I remember going to the newspaper section of a library when I was in Toronto, we do have newspaper sections in our library's here too but the hemerotecas are much more complete.

I thought Gabi handled the info on his dad extremely well considering how she found out. I also agree that David's change is impressive and I'm glad he's maturing so fast after such a lifethreatening situation.

I feel bad for Carlos because it is now obvious his father doesn't love him and he never did. I can't believe someone would be so horrible to his son but I know there are even worse exemples in the world.

I don't think dishwashers have ever been popular here. I know my parents distrust them for some reason and most people feel that way too. We don't have a chacha but we've had help in the past. It's not so much that we are used to the help here as it is that every month there's always at least a couple of women knocking on the door asking for a job because they need it (just like Susana did in LVO) and sometimes when there's enough money people hire them. Those who earn enough to keep a maid permanently do so because it's comfortable to have help around the house. Those of us who can't, just keep them for a couple of days and then they leave. Most people don't have the money to keep them though, they work for around 150 pesos a day (like 12 dollars) and that's expensive for us but I don't think it would be for an American who comes here to live with a salary or retirenment pension from the US. I think most inmigrants from the US, Canada and Europe tend to live in the nicer neighborhoods so most of the people they'll know will probably have maids.

Jarocha

Jarocha, do you think a guy like Leonardo, wealthy and a single dad would likely have a maid?

I notice he didn't get a live-in one until Paula arrived; but I'd guess he had one once a week or so before that.

Jeri, with all the lying and half-of-the-truths going on, I appreciate the care you take to point out who knows what. I looked up "hemeroteca," but it wasn't in my dictionary. Thanks for the definition plus its roots. My favorite lol today: "Carlos hasn't laid in a bottle of creme de menthe yet."

ITA with all on Adolfo and Elsa. Now I don't feel so bad now about noticing these past weeks that Adolfo wears a suit pretty well and in that bedroom scene way back he looked very fit for a geezer.

I was relieved that David was the first person Gabi went to see after the bombshell. I was afraid she'd go straight to Leo to get more information. But she went straight to David for comfort, to me demonstrating how much he means to her.

I like Juli's former hairstyle better, but the new one is more distinct from Gabi's so may it will help Leo see Juli more in her own right.

I hope Guernica's private jet shows up at the beach so JJ can realize it's the same one on his videotape. Adolfo is mean, crafty, and totally selfish, but he doesn't seem to take delight in being cruel (except maybe with Carlos). Guernica enjoys cruelty; I can't stand that smile when he's talking to JJ on the phone about the letter.

Jeri: I do think someone like Leo would have a maid. He probably didn't mind doing things for himself when he was alone but he might be worried that his daughter would need someone there not only to keep the house clean but to make sure she is alright while he is working. Especially considering how demanding his job is. I bet he would be also concerned about finding someone that could cook. I noticed he usually had take out or would have lunch with Fausto and the Guillén's, he probably doesn't want that for his daughter.

Jarocha

Jeri, terrific recap and interesting info on the Hemoreteca. With this digital age, there may not be any further need for any new Hemoretecas though I think it's nice to have the original in one's hands.

Vivi, your ship/yacht analogy is LOL. Speaking of boats, Elsa's problem is that she wants hers rocked by J J, plain and simple. Mauricio seems perfect in every way except for that for her, IMHO.

When Zaida called Garnica's office, his secretary mentioned he would be out of town without mentioning Puerto Vallarta specifically, I think. So I guess Adolfo finally did something himself and found out that is where Garnica will be so his henchman can make a hit. Hope Adolfo doesn't learn J J is there as well or he might target him again. He knows J J is one of Garnica's business partners on this deal.

Caramelo has never been away from Tio Asuncion so she is having a little separation anxiety... cute. But it was a little cruel when she used her hands as donkey ears and made a little noise in reference to his not knowing how to read or write. But they seemed to thinks this was funny.

Yes, it's amazing that Leo's apartment would have a little room for a housekeeper to stay in. I know there is no space in my house.

So the cliffhanger seems to be this beach trip and the possibility of an assasination and/or maybe a Elsa/J J fallout.

GinCA

Jeri, thanks for the Latin-Greek Cross Reference site...interesting and informative.

GinCA

Jeri, Your recap and referencing are perfect in every way. I love your ironic humor in telling Elsa the JJ ship already sailed and you were only in steerage anyway. She really cannot seem to accept that her young girl fantasies about JJ as a love interest were going to crack and drop to the floor as soon as he was out of jail. Any fantasy must be good if you are in jail so he did not particularly discourage her and his jealousy later about her interest in Mau only helped keep the embers of romantic hope alive. So she is not entirely to blame for being so insufferably moonstruck and annoying.
Loved the "hemeroteca" lesson. I always love when words I think I don't know turn out to be related to words I do know. CarayCaray is best for its educational uses but also provides tears, belly laughs and sighs and shrugs. Almost sounds aerobic, doesn't it?
New Year's Eve is tomorrow evening. I wish you all safe passage, peace and joy.

Newbie- We do not have a caramel apple in our midst. Meaning, the actress playing Caramelo (Karla Lozano) is not the same actress playing Manzanita (Mariana Quiroz)in Llena de Amor. :)

Cheryl, it's always nice when you drop in. :-) Hope you are enjoying yourself down there. I'd love to take credit for the excellent nautical turns of phrase, but they are from our dear Vivi. :D

Jeri, Thanks for the verification of authorship. Sometimes the gilded phrases are flying so fast around here, it is impossible to tell who started something. Dear Vivi, you are always agile and ready with the perfect phrases to please and tease us and tickle our fancy.
I love how this telenovela keeps driving hard down the track.
Mil besos y abrazos y deseo a todos ustedes un feliz y prospero año nuevo.
Cheryl y Willa

Vivi, thanks for doing the research on Caramelo for me. I almost saw the screen tonight with Caramelo's name listed--it went by so fast. Also, I don't catch the beginning of Llena, so I haven't looked there yet. Caramelo has her two permanent front teeth and seems to have lost one next to it--making her about 7, don't you think? She's definitely one to watch in the future.

Sort of OT--I watched Gorda and Flaca while I was ironing this afternoon and they were saying that Gabriel Soto has a baddie role up next and David Zepeda is a good guy in a new proyecto. Interesting.
