La Verdad Oculta 79: The ONE Ring…uh, TWO…wait, THREE Rings to Rule Them All!!

Never one to turn down an opportunity to kick a man while he’s down, Adolfo has just delivered a series of body blows to David after throwing the paralyzed young man from his wheelchair to the floor. David is left moaning in agony and Adolfo stealthily sneaks out of the Genoves house, like the rat that he is. He checks in quickly with his new BFF Edgar before speeding off in his car. Edgar waves off the concern of the two other guards, who had been conveniently posted to the back of the house. Inside the house, Dora and the maid Ramona have both heard the shouting and moaning and come rushing to the study. David won’t allow them to touch him or move him, but has Dora call Gabi, while Ramona calls Abelardo and the doctor.

Gabi and Juli, meanwhile, have decided to visit and bring flowers to the grave of their newly discovered mother Marta. They are shocked to discover that the tombstone (lápida) has been smashed. Being totally in the dark about why anyone (especially their father) would have any reason to do such a thing, they can only conclude it must have been Bertha. But, since Bertha doesn’t know Marta was their mother, they are still left baffled. Juli wistfully wishes that they had an image (retrato) of their mother. (You’re staring at her Juli.) Gabi thinks that Yolanda probably has one, but it’s better that Juli contact her since she and that woman aren’t exactly on good terms. Gabi receives a panicked call from Dora, with David’s pain filled groans in the background. David’s fallen from his wheelchair, and the doctor and an ambulance have been called. Gabi and Juli rush to the house.

A bit later, outside of the Genoves house, the servants and the family watch David being loaded into the ambulance, where Gabi accompanies him. Dora explains to Juli and Abelardo that David told her the culprit was Adolfo Avila, who not only threw him from his chair, but also kicked him (lo patear). Abelardo questions Edgar, but he claims he didn’t see nutin’, but he’ll be sure to question his men. Juli wants them to tell Don Mario, but Abelardo assures her he’ll inform the sickly Mario later. The three rush off to the hospital.

Adolfo’s back at home and gets the update from Edgar. David’s been taken away in really grave condition. Adolfo just wants to make sure no one saw him. Not to worry. His boys saw Adolfo’s car drive off, but he’s got them under control. None of the maids saw him enter. “Muy bien.” Adolfo tells him to keep him informed and hangs up with a self satisfied smirk. He then greets Bertha who’s making her way out the condo, and also seems to have retrieved her skirt from Elsa. Before she leaves, he’s got a favor to ask her. If someone asks about his whereabouts that day, tell them that she’s been with him since the morning. They had breakfast together, ate together, and later came back to the condo. The concierge did not see him enter and exit the building, so that’s not a problem.

Bertha wants to know what he did, but should know by now that Adolfo doesn’t answer questions. He gives her some BS answer that, although he didn’t do anything, someone’s always trying to blame him for something. Bertha doesn’t look like she’s buying that answer, but she’s picked up quite a few new tricks since living with Adolfo. She’ll be his alibi, IF he buys her a “depa” (short for departemento- apartment/condo) in Playa del Carmen. Adolfo looks pleased that his favorite student is excelling so well in Amoral Behavior 101. It’s a deal. She can start looking at brochures for her beach condo.

At the hospital, David’s doctor comes out to inform the family of his condition. Continuing his approach to not pull any punches, he tells them point blank that David’s in really bad shape. They’ll keep him in observation and then start him on a rehabilitation regiment. He does believe that he’ll recover (recomponer). What he’s really concerned about is how this happened. When he hears David was attacked by someone, he tells them they’ve got to press charges (una demanda) against this person. While he gives the ladies more details about David’s condition, FaustiMario arrives and is given the rundown by Abelardo. Fausto, to say the least, is ticked off. “No puede ser! Cuando va a terminar todo esto?!” (It can’t be! When is this all going to end?!) He calms himself down enough to join the ladies and play his Mario role.

We go from anguish in the hospital, to despair in JJ’s house. He and Limon are throwing a pity party for two. Limon thinks that sooner or later Caramelo will forget about him. JJ tells him not to say that since he’ll be able to see her everyday. But Limon thinks it’s possible since she’ll make new friends at school, and when Elsa marries Mauricio, they might move to another country and take Caramelo with them. “NO!!!” JJ won’t permit it! Limon doesn’t know how they’ll be able to prevent it, since legally they’ll have no rights. “Maldita sea!” JJ laments that he can’t do anything about this stain (mancha) on his life, for a crime he didn’t commit. But he will, he MUST, find the guilty ones. He can’t take anymore (ya no puedo mas). The death of that girl has ruined his life. First he lost his mother, and now they want to take the little one away from them. He swears that he’s going to get revenge. The two men crumble into each others arms in inconsolable tears.

At the hospital the next morning, Dora and Gabi stand by David’s bedside as Dora explains he didn’t really sleep the whole night, due to the pain. Dora points out to Gabi that this is precisely why she can’t go make a statement to the police. This is why she’s scared. What if it happens again? David opens his eyes and Gabi goes to him. With great difficulty speaking through the pain, he asks his mama to let him speak to Gabi alone. He tells Gabi he didn’t want to talk in front of Dora, because they’re going to speak about JJ. He asks Gabi to call JJ so that they can ask him to loan them his hotel manager, Urbina. Urbina will help her so that she can take control of the Genoves hotel chain (cadena Campo Real) right away. They need her; otherwise the business will soon be in trouble. Gabi doesn’t understand why Mario can’t take control of the business, as she’s seen him looking much healthier lately. David says it’s just for show. His dad is actually really sick and tired (sick and tired of playing two people). He also wants to talk to JJ about Dora’s letter, and seeing how scared Dora is, he didn’t want her there to hear the conversation.

Adolfo and Edgar meet on the street. Adolfo wants a rush job on bumping off Mario. Edgar is worried that after the David incident, it will be much harder and more dangerous to pull something off. Adolfo knows Edgar is taking a risk, and that he’ll be interrogated, but he’ll be paid very well. All he has to do is ensure no one enters that house when the time comes. He’ll be in contact.

Gabi puts JJ on the phone with David, who tells JJ what happened and who did it. David wants to press charges, but there are no other witnesses. He asks JJ to loan them Urbina and he gladly agrees. Gabi cuts the conversation short as David is so weak and in so much obvious pain. JJ assures her he’s there for whatever she and David need. They are going to make sure that those jerks pay for everything they’ve done. After she hangs up, a groggy David comments on what a good person JJ is.

In their apartment, Leo is busy working at his dining table-desk, and Paulita is busy working at her coffee table-desk. He puts his work aside to have a serious daddy-daughter talk, and he doesn’t want her to laugh at him. They both put on their serious faces, arms crossed, as Leo makes his announcement. “I have a girlfriend.” Paula approaches him smiling. She already knows who it is—Julieta. “She told you?” Silly Daddy, of course little Nancy Drew already knew. She sits down across from him to lobby for Phase 2 of plan Get a Mommy. “And when are you getting married?” Well, Leo thinks that will require more time, but Paula wonders what’s the hold up. Leo tries to explain the complex world of adult courtship. He and Juli have to continue to get to know each other, and getting married right now would be a difficult/complex issue.

They’re interrupted by the doorbell. Speak of the lovely devil, it’s Juli. Paula runs excitedly to the door. “Here comes your girlfriend.” Leo tries to suppress a smile as Paulita greets Juli, “Hola futuro mama!” (Hi future mom!) They are even already wearing matching mommy-daughter outfits—Juli in a white top and short denim skirt/Paulita in a denim jacket and white skirt. Juli looks bemused at Leo, but he admits that Paula already knew. Juli wants to know what Paula thinks; is she ok with it? “Of course!” The only thing she doesn’t like is Juli’s noodle soup (sopa de pasta). LOL! Juli’s ok with that.

Juli begins to tell Leo what happened to David, and Leo decides to send Paula to her room so that he can speak to Juli alone. With an, “adios mama”, she’s off. After Juli finishes recounting what happened to David, Leo runs off to see about bringing charges against Adolfo. Juli’s mom senses are already working, and she sniffs out Paula eavesdropping behind the corner. She gives her little cheeks an affectionate squeeze for spying on them.

At his apartment, Adolfo and Yolanda are having tea, when his jeweler arrives and they go to Adolfo’s office. Adolfo takes Roberto’s ring from his safe, where we also see stacks of American $100 bills. The jeweler has Adolfo guess which of the two rings he brought is the real one. Adolfo guesses wrong and is impressed by the extraordinary copy the jeweler has made. Carlos will never know he’s been given a fake. Only an expert will be able to tell that the jewels in the copy are fake. “I’ll put the real one here in the same box with its pair. And the false one here, which I’ll give to Carlos. No expert will be looking at that one anyway.” The jeweler refuses payment because Adolfo is such an important client. While Adolfo is hatching this little plan, Yolanda is listening intently at the door. They are both interrupted when Leo and Ramon come barging in with a warrant for Adolfo’s arrest on suspicion of assaulting David. Adolfo’s not going anywhere until he speaks to his lawyer. “What lawyer? Garnica? We suspect he’s either been murdered or fled the country. You’ve got a lot to answer for and a lot of declarations to make.” Leo’s in no mood for Adolfo’s sanctimonious posturing today, and roughly ushers him out the door. “Shut up and walk!”

The jeweler quickly makes his exit, the maid looks like she really regrets taking this job, and Yolanda scrambles to find another lawyer in Adolfo’s rolodex. But she pauses long enough to make sure her muñeco isn’t shortchanged, and switches the fake ring with the real ring. Ha!

At JJ’s, Chicles’ mom, Lucha, is trying to convince Limon that everything will work out. Limon is determined now to get some education for himself and not remain a dolt. That’s the reason why all of this is happening. She thinks he’s being a bit of a drama queen. He’s not losing Caramelo. He’ll get to see her all the time. That’s what Elsa says, but who knows. Today they’re going to finalize the paperwork. Lucha tells him to cheer up. Elsa isn’t a bad person. Limon is afraid that because she’s so upset with JJ, she’ll use Caramelo to get back at him. Lucha has to admit that when women get ticked, they can do some pretty ugly things (a woman scorned…).

Caramelo comes barreling in, dragging Elsa behind her, jumping and yelling that Elsa is now her mama! “And this paper says so, right Tia Elsa?! I mean, mama.” She excitedly shows Limon the document that he cannot read, as he struggles to hold back tears. Caramelo then insists that Lucha pack her bags right now. Elsa, who has not taken her eyes from Limon’s face, gently tells them that it’s a requirement of the process that Caramelo live with her from this point forward. Caramelo rushes Lucha out of the room to pack. Limon tearily asks Elsa if he can indeed see Caramelo every day. Elsa tells him naturally, he doesn’t even have to ask that question and he doesn’t have to worry. And besides, the parental rights (patria potestad) she’s been given are provisional. The adoption process is much longer. (Meaning, he could still have the opportunity to adopt her if things change.) She gives him a hug and tells him he can come to her house whenever he wants. Right now it’s important that they do this, for the good of Caramelo. Limon is too lost in his own pain to listen and he flees the room.

At his hotel, JJ gives Urbina his assignment to help Gabi run the Genoves hotel chain. No problem. Urbina knows the Genoves business well and is happy to help. Ale arrives and is greeted with kisses and compliments. They quickly update each other on David (horrible), Garnica (still no info), and Caramelo (Ale is pleased Elsa stepped in to help). But JJ is not happy about being separated from Caramelo. Ale tries to show him that there was no other real choice. Did he want them to take her to an orphanage? Like a chastened puppy, JJ shakes his head and admits, no.

Over some delicious looking shakes and chocolate dessert, Bertha tells her fellow skank, uh, friend, about Adolfo’s request of an alibi. Given that the family may or may not be involved in smuggling, and other shady business, Bertha’s friend wonders what problems Bertha may be getting herself into. That beach condo is tempting, but Bertha looks like she’s starting to think of the consequences of getting too involved in shady Avila business.

Roberto has returned to his apartment after a long day of…what, I don’t really know. He listens to David’s message to get in touch and decides to get in touch with Adolfo instead. The scared maid informs an impactado Roberto that Adolfo’s been hauled off to the big house.

At the hospital Gabi is reluctant to leave David’s side to head to his business office to meet Urbina. David feels it’s important that she starts heading the business right away; otherwise they’ll be in trouble. She kisses him farewell and he tells her he loves her.

At Roberto’s, he’s doing exactly what rats do on a sinking ship, fleeing. He’s pulled out his well used suitcase, a stack of clothes, and stacks of US money. We know how well this worked out for him last time….

Adolfo, on the other hand, can’t be caught. He’s returned home to a pacing Yolanda. He spins a tale of falsely being accused by David of assaulting him, and he doesn’t know how the cops came to the crazy conclusion that he had something to do with Garnica’s disappearance. He goes to his office to put the “real” rings away, and returns to the living room with the fake ring. He gives Yolanda the fake ring, out of the goodness of his heart, to give back to Carlos. She feigns surprise and gratitude. He’s just doing it to make them happy, plus he doesn’t need it. Before she leaves to take the ring to Carlos, Yolanda asks Adolfo if he really had nothing to do with what happened to David. Given how much he detests David, he would have loved to. But, no, it wasn’t him. Yolanda is obviously not buying that.

At his apartment, Leo’s assistant, aka Paulita, answers the phone. It’s Ramon, who has a very shamed faced looking Roberto, with his open suitcase and stacks of money, sitting in front of him. They caught him trying to flee the country at the airport. Leo rushes off to work, and Paulita and Doña Gumen commiserate over how ugly Leo’s work is.

At the Club, Yolanda’s happy to see Carlos back where he belongs, managing the business. He tells her she’s the only one who’s ever understood him. (Maybe he should tell his shrink that.) He’s implementing a new management system that he hopes will impress his father. (Oh, Carlos. That is such a lost cause. I see more time on the doctor’s couch.) Well, Yolanda has brought a surprise from his father. She hands him the ring, and his eyes light up like it’s Christmas and his birthday and he’s just received the best present ever. He slips it on and admits how much he likes his ring. Yolanda knows. She tells him to enjoy it and leaves with kisses and hugs. Carlos sits and admires his only visible proof of fatherly affection.

Gabi returns to David’s hospital room from a long day of work at the office with Urbina. Urbina is patient, all went well, and she loves it. David and Dora have no doubt she’ll succeed. Gabi relieves Dora of her guardian duties and Dora heads home. Dora’s happy because the doctor’s given David a good prognosis. She gives the kids kisses and heads to the house to rest. Ale soon enters the room and Gabi takes the opportunity to get something to eat.

David is relieved that Gabi has left the room because he wants Ale’s help getting JJ to come there. When he arrives, he wants Ale to make up some pretext for getting Gabi out of there. Although she doesn’t know what he’s up to, Ale promises to help. At that moment JJ is getting an update from Urbina, who suggests that JJ tag along as he teaches Gabi the Genoves hotel business so that he can also learn. When Ale calls, he agrees to go right over to the hospital. Ale is worried about David. She can see he’s really tired and he hasn’t been sleeping much. He admits he’s in too much pain to sleep, plus he’s really worried about everything that’s been happening and wants to resolve things before anything worse occurs. She's really worried now, and urges him to tell her all.

At AFI, Roberto also looks pretty worried, and he should be because Leo has just entered the room. He tries the arrogant Adolfo approach. “I want to know why you’ve detained me!” Leo’s not having it. He’s the one who asks questions! He wants to know where Roberto was going. He was just taking a trip to NY. What? He’s now prohibited from leaving the country? Ramon shows Leo Roberto’s ONE WAY ticket. Well, Roberto hadn’t decided if he was going stay abroad (al otro lado). Leo then asks about the stacks of American bills. “What? They’re mine. I didn’t steal them, if that’s what you’re thinking.” Ramon points out that there’s $20,000 here. That’s a lot of money and Leo wants to know where Roberto is working. No job. Then where did he get this money? “I’m really lucky.” He won it in a football pool (quiniela). As far as he knows, that’s not a crime. Plus he has his savings (ahorros). In what bank? Roberto claims he guards his saving the old fashioned way—in his house, likely under a mattress. Leo’s had enough of Roberto’s idiotic smugness. He’s done playing “good cop”; it’s time for a dose of “bad cop.” He throws Roberto’s role of setting up Gabi’s false wedding in his face. Roberto claims that is was a joke, David’s idea, and anyway, Mario fixed everything. Leo wants to know if these are the typical kind of favors he does. Does he know Adolfo Avila? He admits he knows Adolfo, only because he knows his son.

Leo asks Roberto if he’s ever done a “favor” for Adolfo. To help loosen the truth from Roberto’s tongue, he gets in his face, grabs him, and gives him a good shake. “Be careful with telling me a lie!!!”

Excellent title Vivi. I thought the same thing when Adolfo admired his duplicity only to be outwitted by Yolanda who switched the fake ring for the real deal. One ring to rule them all indeed.

Who else cheered when Leo grabbed Adolfo roughly by his arm to take him to the police station.

You would think after finding her son on the floor after a vicious assault, Dora would come clean and tell what she knows. I'm really hoping someone will find that letter in Caramelo's backpack. That's JJ's only hope now.

Did Roberto really think he'd skip town with supercop Leo on his tail LOL.

Color me confused. I was puzzled by the third ring. Apparently, I did not understand any of the initial conversation between Adolfo and the jeweler. Sometime before Felix kicked the bucket did he actually hand over the ring to Adolfo? Or did the jeweler make a real gem ring and a fake ring. And Adolfo wanted two real rings so he took Carlos' and now I know he had a fake ring made for Carlos. Since the jeweler appeared at the apartment with three rings, I assume the jeweler brought back the original of Carlos, a replica ring with real gems and a fake one. And the real ring Felix stole from Roberto is still somewhere in his belongings. Hee, hee, The fake ring may be Adolfo's downfall due to Yolanda's switch. Hee, hee.

See why I need your excellent recaps, Aribeth! Thanks, Jeri, for the links.

GinCA

So sorry, Vivi. Its your day not Aribeth's. It's 11 am in L A but I guess I need another cup of coffee. Thanks for the great minirecap.

GinCA

Great title. :) So... Adolfo is the Lord of the Pimps.

Floridia - from yesterday:
I don't think Elsa moved into Mauricio's flat. The seem to be a classic "nothing before wedding" couple, like Juli and Leo/David and Gaby.
Also,
how did you come to know Spanish so well?

Thank you very much, but believe me, while Vivi and Jeri are professionals my Spanish is mediocre at best. I'm lucky because a telenovela's vocabulary is very limited usually and the situations are always the same. Love, hate, wedding, jealousy, babies. (Though LVO is a bit harder because of the schemings and investigations but at least I learnt a new word - contrabandista, aka smuggler.) As for learning this language - from my point of view the English and Spanish grammar and vocabulary are similar to each other, thanks to the huge French impact after 1066. These similarities help much. And thankfully the pronounciation is similar to my language. If it was like English's my head would explode. :)

Thank you Jeri for the links. Can't wait for the recap.

I am confusedas well. Did the jeweller have the 3 rings, 2 real and 1 false? Or did Adolfo have one of the real ones in his safe? I can't remember, but did Felix give the ring that Roberto had to Adolfo?

So Bertha doesn't mind lying for Adolfo as long as he buys her a house at the beach. Looks like she will certainly be heading for jail for giving a false alibi.

Loved how Leo manhandled Adolfo out of his condo. Adolfo doesn't like his suit getting creased, lol.

Gabi thinks that Bertha defaced Marta's grave. If I remember Santiago/Fausto did that.

Little Caramelo is so happy to be with Elsa, she isn't picking up that Asuncion is so upset.

Margaret

Aribeth, Jeri, and Vivi, you have my total gratitude. Recapping this rollercoaster of a TN can’t be easy, with the twist and turns, complex characters, and all couples at a crossroad. Thanks so much.

Pirate Babe, ITA on Dora. I’m still waiting for fire and venom to spew out of her since Adolfo (David's presumed father) just kicked the crap out of her baby boy.

Since Elsa has a job she likes and has grown confident there, I hope she keeps working. It’s sad that Asuncion feels his illiteracy caused him to lose Caramelo, but at least he’s determined to learn to read now.

Both a good heart and brains are the ideal, but if I have to choose I pick a passionate heart. I have brains enough for both of us. :) JJ had to know when he was blathering about paying someone as a cover to adopt Caramelo that that was just plain nuts and he’d already concluded himself that Elsa was the best option, but his mind had to take a momentary flight of fancy to escape his desperation. I’m sure in prison JJ concocted many fantasies to escape the grimness. That’s why he read “The Count of Monte Cristo.” Ale and JJ are good together because when he takes a flight of fancy, she simply presents some level-headed thoughts and, quite a few times, he’s listened and agreed she’s right. After dealing with arrogant and macho guys with brains who refuse to take advice, a guy with a passionate heart who listens is refreshing. At least to me.

Yes, Elsa and JJ need to be in family counseling. She’s angry with him for not falling in love with her (though she’s happy with Mauricio), and he is angry with her because instead of being his girl friday she embarked on her own life with Mauricio. If they are to have dual parenting roles, they’ve got to end this bitterness. First step, they both re-read JJ’s letter to Elsa. JJ’s brain was sharp when he wrote it.

Ale’s not ready for kids, but ironically the first time she showed maternal instinct was with Elsa, when Elsa was crying desperate to get Mauricio’s contact info to save JJ. Ale, that “mujer arrogante,” was very moved and consoled Elsa and gave her the info. I agree Ale’s reluctance to take Caramelo is realistic considering they’re not close though they do like each other. I’m glad Ale is honest – instead of phony & conniving - but I hope she’ll grow to see Caramelo as a daughter. Love sometimes requires sacrifice for the other’s good. What would Ale be willing to sacrifice for JJ? Ale, turn to Mina for advice.

I wonder if the therapist will uncover Carlos’ early suppressed memories of his mother and he’ll see Gabi’s face.

I don’t think a guy with a heart like JJ would let anything stop him from visiting Caramelo. He likened losing Caramelo to losing his mother. Caramelo wants a mom more than she wants a dad, so let’s see how she likes living with Elsa. But then she hasn’t yet experienced a household where Asuncion’s not there to share her favorite junkfood or JJ’s not there to catch her in his arms. It was very sad but I did like seeing the two guys crying over losing their niña. Guys who truly care for kids get to me, with their faults and all.

Hey all- Dropping in for a bit, but am running out again for a party.

The cufflink/rings: Adolfo had Roberto's ring in his safe in his office (see my explanation below from a few episodes ago). Roberto's ring is in a bigger setting than the original one that Carlos had. Both of these of course, are made from the original cufflinks that are one-of-a-kind pieces.

Adolfo then took Carlos' ring and had the jeweler make a copy, so he had to leave the real one with jeweler. The jeweler brough back the real/original (Carlos' ring) and the copy. They look exactly the same (but the fake does not have the same properties or value as the original). So Adolfo has decided to remain with the two originals and to give Carlos the new fake. If you look at the picture you will see that the ring Roberto had made (which is real) is in a bigger/higher setting. With Yolanda's switch, Adolfo now has an authentic and a fake.

Earlier explanation:
Adolfo confronts Roberto about the ring in episode 51. See minute 2:29 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbdHd9TfSZ4&feature=related

It was the same episode that Ale and JJ had their hot encounter at the hotel, David and Gabi had their romantic date, the pictures were stolen and burned, Ale learns Mario is dead and Fausto has taken his place, and Roberto gets the stuffing beat out of him. So a lot went on and it is easy to forget the ring thing. :) I think Adolfo just refused to believe at the time that Roberto somehow came in contact with his long missing cufflink at the Guillen apt. He just filed it away until now when it struck him that if Carlos is wearing the ring, then Roberto really must have found the other cufflink. Now he has to figure out the hows and whys.

Hello everyone! I understand Ale's honesty about Caramelo. She may not be ready for kids like Niece said but if she truly loves JJ and he loves Caramelo, shouldn't she at least think about helping him out?She did say to Mina she wanted her own kids. if I am not mistaken, that makes her extremely selfish. Why was it so easy for Elsa to adopt her and not Lemon? He may not be educated, but he is now rich, has always loved her and is the only parent Caramelo has ever known. The poor baby is craving a mother's love and Elsa fits the bill nicely. Her issues with JJ,however will create problems. What went wrong? In the beginning they were will to do anything for each other.Granted he doesn't love her romantically and he wants to control her but that's life. That should not erase everything else.It sad to see how far apart they have grown. Mauricio is quite a catch.A nice consolation price.she better wise up and hold on tight.
Thanks Vivi for posting a title, waiting for your recap. Thanks Jeri and Aribeth for links for the episode.

Hanna

After commenting that JJ needed humongous doses of ginkgo biloba I’m afraid that I need a dose or two myself! I too am confused about the rings. Adolfo has one original (Carlos’) and two fakes, (Roberto’s and the jeweler’s). As GinCA said, is the fourth with Felix, who is dead? The ring/cufflink stuff has been a little like a NYC street shell game, you play close attention, and you’re still stumped.

Niece, I too think that Elsa needs to keep working and that in turn would give Limon the opportunity to spend time with la niña as her caregiver. After all, Limon and Elsa are great buds. Hanna, like you, I’m afraid that the bad relationship between JJ and Elsa will create “problems” that would eventually bleed over to Cara, they have such a hard time being even civil in the most basic way. They are both so stubborn!

I’m a little concerned that JJ and David will combine efforts in a bad venganza plot. Both are now seething with anger. Oh dear! Guys, let Leo handle Adolfo!

I cried with JJ and Asuncion. Then when Elsa came in and was trying to smooth it over with Asuncion, he walked out. Can't blame him. I don't think Elsa realizes how much JJ and Asuncion love Caramelo. My favorite part of the show was Paula opening the door to Julieta and calling her her future mother. Then a couple of minutes later calls her mama. Leo and Julieta both looked very pleased with Paula's acceptance of their relationship.

Hi Vivi.
I don't watch this but just wanted to drop by and say hi. Great picture quality.

Vivi, we wait with baited breath for your recap--it will definitely be a ringer-zinger.

Meanwhile, to Sandy, GinCa and Margaret: To add to Vivi's explanation--there were only ever two of those azure blue trefoils. They were originally cuff-links belonging to Adolfo. He lost one the night of Marta's murder. The one he had left, he made into a ring and gave it to Carlos.

The other cuff-link wound up in Fausto/Santiago's apartment, hidden in a box behind the tv or something.

At one point Roberto admired Carlo's ring, but Carlos wouldn't give it to him. That made Roberto mad. When he was ordered by Adolfo to break into the Guillen's apartment, he ransaked it looking for the shoes, diamonds, pictures, or anything that pointed to Adolfo.

Roberto found the cufflink. That's the only thing he took (with the key he stole from Juli's purse). He then took it to a jeweler to have it made into a ring like Carlos'. (Remember Leo looking on?) The setting is not exactly like Carlos'. He started wearing it right away, but not for long.

When Roberto got held hostage and beaten purple, I think that's when the ring was taken from his finger. This was apparently given back to Adolfo. So, after Adolfo got Carlos to give him the ring he was wearing, Adolfo has now wound up with both original cuff-links, now turned into rings.

This is one of the main reasons he's not threatened by David, because a) he knows he has both original stone trefoils and b) all the photos are destroyed except Susana's--and he thinks she still has it, wherever she happens to be (we know, don't we).

Ok, so now Adolfo has a change of heart and has decided to make an exact copy of the setting, stones and ring of Carlos' original ring, but not so exact to pass a close inspection, but close enough and planned to give the fake one "back" to Carlos. The jeweler didn't charge him, considering it a gift for a good customer.

Unbeknownst to Adolfo, Yolanda has flummoxed him. The original will soon be back on public display.

Now for a short Spanish lesson:
In my old dictionary, I couldn't find a word for cuff-link. Babelfish says they are mancuernos. My dictionary says mancornar is to join, couple, tie two head of cattle together and a mancuerda is each turn of the rack (an instrument of torture). Your choice!!

Un manco is someone with only one hand or one arm. Interestingly, NO SER MANCO, is to be unscrupulous.

On LVO I hear them saying mantornilla, but I can't find it in the dictionary. Un tornillo, of course is a screw.

I did find the word pasador de camisa for shirt stud, which is pretty descriptive. When I was little, we called them gemelos, or twins.

Does anyone have any other definitions to add?

Hi, Newbie, I think the word you're looking for that they have been using is Mancuernilla.

And now I will pop back out very quickly without reading anything -- I haven't seen the episode yet.

I just pop in from time to time to make sure all is well and nobody needs anything...

Most of this afternoon and evening I've been glued to the TV watching news from back home in Tucson. :-(

Jeri--thanks for clarifing the word mancuernilla. It makes sense.

I had no idea what happened in Tucson until I checked Yahoo news. I was out all day and went to dinner. What a national tragedy.
Newbie-O-K

Just got home a bit ago and turned on the news of the happening in Arizona. Crazy.

Newbie- Thanks for further explaining the cufflink rings for everyone. Two cufflinks, turned into two rings. One fake ring made on the orders of Adolfo. A total of three rings. Adolfo has a fake and a real. Carlos has a real one (thanks to Yolanda).

Sandy- I think David will maintain a cool head and not do anything crazy for revenge. JJ luckily now has Ale who seems to be able to talk him out of doing stupid things and helps him think through his next moves.

Hanna- One of the items that was needed for the social workers in order to adopt was proof of finishing primary and secondary school. Limon does not have this. And he's illiterate. Frankly, I wouldn't feel comfortable putting a child in the care of a person who cannot read or write. There are all kinds of dangerous situations that could arise from this. I totally understand social services rejecting someone because of this, no matter if they have money.

Barbabra- I think Elsa does realize how much JJ and Limon love Caramelo. How could she not? But what else is she to do? Caramelo has to live with her as part of the adoption process. She does not have a choice in the matter.

The recap will be up tomorrow. Goodnight!

Hi, Jeri and all,

My dictionary says "mancuernas"(plural), so that's close to what the show and you are saying.

My question is do we know if Adolfo
was aware of losing the cufflink
at the crime scene or did he just
think he had lost it randomly?
If he had connected it to the murder, I would think he would
have deep sixed it to avoid any
association with it? Or did he
only think of the connection
when David alerted him?
Even so, now that he had them,
I still think he would destroy
all evidence of them...and with Leo's eagle eye,why have any reminders?

Clarification - deep sixed the
other original instead of making
a ring for Carlos.

Vivi, thank you so much for clarifying how Adolfo had the ring that Roberto had. I thought that Felix had not given it to Adolfo and was still on his person waiting to be found. I viewed the episode again and now it makes sense to me. I don't like looking at any type of violence and so I usually FF past those scenes. Now I know why I was so confused about who had what ring and how.

Margaret

Newbie, thank you to you as well for explaining the history of the rings/cufflinks. I read Vivi's post and commented then went further down and saw your post.

Margaret

Vivi and Newbie, thanks for the clarifications on the TREE rings that now are all in Adolfo’s possession. Two were made from THE cufflinks at different times by different people and one is a copy made by the jeweler. I will now watch those rings like a hawk!

Hi everyone! I haven't seen the episode yet. Truthfully I don't know if I'm going to be able to keep up with the novela in the next couple of weeks. I'm in the process of moving out to DF to start my master's degree. I'll try to keep up with the recaps and comments if I'm able to.

I remember what's comming on the show and I know at least one long discussion is going to happen soon :).

Jarocha

Floridia--amiga, this is a telenovela after all. Adolfo deep sixing the cuff link he had left after the murder of Marta would have been too logical. Then, it couldn't be featured in the opening credits as something significant (along with the diamonds).
Newbie-O-K

The recap is up now!

Jarocha- Congrats on grad school and moving to DF. I hope you do keep dropping in on us on Caray Caray from time to time.

I feel like Adolfo refuses to get rid of the cufflink-rings out of arrogance. He acquired those unique/one of a kind cufflinks many years ago. He probably got them in some shady way. He's proud of that. Like those illegal art collectors who can't show people the stolen piece of art they have, but hold on to them and secretly admire it anyway. This happens in real life.

Vivi, I love your detailed recaps and thanks for clearing up the ring matter, I guess I missed Adolfo taking out the ring from the safe. And I guess I didn't understand the instructions Adolfo gave to the jeweler. Curses to Uni, for making me watch at 12 a m when my mind is not functioning....that's my excuse. I usually look at the links but not this time. Thanks again!

I don't think Alejandra is necessarily "selfish" for not wanting to adopt Caramelo or only wanting biological kids.

The only wanting bio-kids things rings true to Ale because she and Bertha made much of the fact that David wasn't really "one of them"/wasn't really their primo because he was the servant's son. I will admit she's become great friends with David, but I don't believe she looks at David as her cousin.

Alejandra doesn't have the same sense of family as JJ, Limon, Elsa & Caramelo do.

I believe that Alejandra WOULD treat Caramelo much differently if she had her own children. She knows this, which is why it's responsible on her part to say "I don't want no parts of Caramelo."

What WOULD be selfish is if Alejandra agreed to adopt Caramelo to stay in JJ's good graces, when she knows she doesn't really care about Caramelo and would put her own bio-kids above Caramelo. Plus, if Alejandra never could have bio-kids, I believe she'd take it out on Caramelo.

JJ needs to figure out if he wants to stay with a woman who doesn't have the same sense of family as he does.

Newbie O K, thank you for the detailed explanation as I just read the comments. You and Vivi are so kind to help me out...boy, was I confused. Thanks again.

Yesterday EY was interviewed in a Mexican show called Vidas Paralelas. His managment is working on mending his image firmly, this interview means either trying to remain relevant OR a new project coming. Anyway, it's a very interesting interview. I was afraid it was going to be a "poor me" and "I know many people hate me but I'm a great guy" show, but it's much more and much better. He talks about himself, we learn many details about his career and the creators asked a bunch of people about their opinion on him, like Galilea Montijo, Maria Sorté, Jorge Salinas, Nicandro Díaz, his son, Gabriel Soto, Raúl Araiza and Mejía.

Basically they all say that Lalo is a guy with a bad and quick temper and a golden heart, he's impulsive, he's a big kid but a professional actor, his childhood was hard, blahblahblah. He talks about his relationship with Mexican press - and a journalist talks about how showbusiness works.

Geez, I didn't know his mother was a warder. He spent much time at her workplace, he got to know many people there and learnt to appreciate freedom. He started to work when he was a kid and had many jobs. For a while he played football and he liked it much. After a match he and his teammates were walking back to the bus when they saw a pretty actress who was just leaving a theater. (No, he doesn't remember her name. The journalist says, but you remember her body, don't you? He laughs: yes, those legs... :)) On the following day they went back to the theatre. And again, and again, and again. A few days later a director invited them inside and he became some kind of utility man. It was an experimental theatre. One day one of the actors couldn't participate in the show so EY was asked to substitute. In the meantime he participated in a fotonovela.

His first telenovela was El hogar que yo robé (a previous version of La usurpadora with Juan Ferrera and Angélica María) in 1981 in which he had a very small role of a barman. Then he made Quiéreme siempre (1981) and El amor nunca muere (1982 - oh, my God, that babyface was lame). Both shows were produced by Ernesto Alonso (RIP), who became his long-awaited father figure. His big break was El maleficio in 1984 (Jacqueline Andere is gorgeous). The he made a few stupid movies and Tu eres mi destino with Laura Flores, who played his mom in CS. In 1987 he got his first protagonist role in Senda de gloria, a historical telenovela of Alonso for which he was nominated for the best juvenil actor's award. (That moustache sucks.) He admits he was a very stupid kid by that time, he was uneducated, he didn't know who he was, et cetera... He spent the night in jail a few times. Then he got married and they had a son. The marriage didn't work but it was fun. The divorced when Eduardo Jr. was 3 years old.
They show the night he won the best actor's award for LVO and he thanks to Televisa and Larrosa for giving him a second chance. He's funny when he says to the journalist that yeah, we actors always say awards don't mean anything for us but when we won them we're way too proud of them. :)
Then he talks about the years when he was addicted to alcohol.

In 1988 he made the successful juvenil telenovela called Dulce desafío with Adela Noriega (Adelita was beautiful but that wedding dress was horrible). After my beloved Yo compro esa mujer and En carne propia he was offered the leading role in a Miami telenovela (Marielena with Lucía Méndez). That was the time when he realized that life sucked, his marriage failed, he wasn't in love with Televisa either so he left Mexico.
End of part one, they story will continue next Saturday.

Galilea seems to be a really lovely lady in real life, too. Listen to her at in the first video, 9:22, she's hilarious.

Vivi, thank you for the recap! I'll read it tomorrow and I'm sure I'll enjoy it much.

Niecie, I agree with you completely.

Jarocha, good luck for your studies! I hope you'll be able to stay with us since I love your comments. May I ask you what you study?

Aribeth- Thanks so much for those videos. I just watched the first part, and it was nice to see the familiar faces of Galilea (who does seem very genuine and animated), Gabriel Soto, and Maria Sorte (Yolanda). Gali and Gabriel seemed very sincere in their affection for "Lalo" too. Much more so than Jorge Salinas (that's the name of his FELS costar right?), who just spewed the same "he's such a hard worker/prepared actor" speech. Gali was funny the way she immitated EY. I'll have to finish watching all the videos some other time, but from the bit I saw, it seems he still has a ways to go to get over his anger issues and to find peace within himself and outside of himself with the press and the novela studios.

Vivi, wonderful recap! Just a few of my favorite lines, “Never one to turn down an opportunity to kick a man while he’s down,” “You’re staring at her Juli,” “he claims he didn’t see nutin,’” “Amoral Behavior 101.” “of course little Nancy Drew already knew.” “Bertha tells her fellow skank, uh, friend, “ and so many more ...fabulous job Vivi, thanks!

Elsa’s words to an inconsolable Limon, “....we have to do this for the good of the child!” I know that Limon, in his state of mind, wasn’t able to really accept this course of action, but if it weren’t for Elsa, Cara would have been removed from their house and sent to a casa hogar. Elsa was kind to Limon with her all encompassing over the back hug, she is doing the best that she can in a really tough situation. She is promising everything good to Limon, even saying that the current arrangements are temporary. The only fly in the ointment is that I hope that Lucha’s “woman scorned” statement isn’t some kind of prophesy. Can JJ stuff his feelings for the good of Caramelo? I don’t know.

Vivi, thanks for the beautifully written summary; I know you were busy all weekend, so it must surely have been a labor of love.
Thanks also for an answer re why
Adolfo kept the cufflink.
Aribeth, thanks for the detailed summary re EY, etc. Does art imitate reality?

Thanks for the recap Vivi! I liked the Amoral 101 thing. I agree, Bertha is a good apprentice.

I feld really bad for Carlos because he is still clinging to the hope that his father will love him and be proud of him. I know Yolanda means well but I think that feeding that hope like she always has done is more hurtful to Carlos since it plays with his mind. I want them to become independant to Adolfo and realize that they don't need them as they are each other's family.

I don't really understand the grudge of JJ against Elsa and Mauricio anymore. I think Elsa is still in love with JJ (sorry but I do) and that's where her feelings come from but I don't see the same thing from JJ to Elsa so every time he feeds that resentment I can't help but feel frustrated with him. I think Limón worries about Caramelo because he was his father, mother, uncle and friend through all her life and while I feel for JJ's suffering I wish he could be more reassuring to Limón instead of acting in ways that make him more worried about rash actions on Elsa's part.

Thanks for the congrats Vivi! I'm a little overwhelmed at the moment. Mexico City is SO different from my cute Port.

Aribeth thanks too! I'm studying International Studies :).

Thanks alot for the video too! I must confess I had never seen a large interview with EY. I thought he looked a bit anxious trough it but I was surprised by how much he shared.

Most memorable things for me:

His chilango accent! It's so thick! I'd never noticed it before.

He swore like three or four times but Televisa only decided to blip "desmadre", heh. He also called a journalist a "gorda asquerosa" which made me laugh because I'm twelve. Oh, EY.

*His mother wasn't just a warder, she was a warder in the Lecumberri prison aka "El Palacio Negro de Lecumberri". That's where our President Madero was murdered during revolution and where the likes of Pancho Villa, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Leon Trotsky, William Burroughs, José Revueltas, etc. were detained as political prisoners at one time or another. It was closed down in the seventies and it was supposed to be an extremely scary place at the time.

His 80's co-stars: Victoria Ruffo (beautiful!) Rebeca Jones (the style!), Jaqueline Andere (WOW!) Laura Flores (that hair!), Julieta Rosen (so pretty!) and Adela in her best looking days. Not bad at all.

The Timbiriche music in Dulce Desafío! I love it since Adela made Quinceañera with Thalía just a couple of years earlier.

Don Raúl Araiza mentioning he had to go get Eduardo and his sons out of jail one night, haha. I'm sure Raúl and Armando appreciated that!

*The Lecumberri jail was made by orders of or HATED/LOVED dictator Porfirio Díaz. Ernesto Alonso produced his epic historic novela "El Vuelo del Águila" about Díaz and to play the younger version of the character he selected Fabián Robles (Roberto in LVO). That was his first role ever!

Jarocha

Thanks for your great recap Vivi. Enjoyed your title and the LOTR reference.

And thanks Aribeth for your Thursday recap! Great comments there too. Put me in the camp with intelligent men. Looks fade but stupidity remains :(

Gabi and Juli were visiting their mom's gravesite but did I miss when they were told Marta was their mother? I know David told Mario/Fausto to tell everything but I didn't think that had happened yet.

Congrats on grad school Jarocha! Best wishes as you transition in to school and the DF.

Vivi: I'll join the chorus of loving your title. I loved your recap and your excllent phrasing, particiularly of the sometimes grim story lines: "Never one to turn down an opportunity to kick a man while he’s down, Adolfo has just delivered a series of body blows to David after throwing the paralyzed young man from his wheelchair to the floor" and "The two men crumble into each others arms in inconsolable tears".

Except for Leo and Juli, not too much to clebrate here except of course for the amazing recaps and always interesting comments.

I'm not sure I've seen Leo as angry as when he throttled Roberto about his role in Gabi's "almost fake" wedding. Not sure his feelings for Gabi have sufficiently dissipated.

Thanks again Viv. Excellent job.

Diana

Vivi--Always at the top of your form--even on the fly. Thank you.

Karen--A quick yes that both girls know Marta is their mother. It all came unravelled when Gabi went to the periodical archives and figured it out and Fausto/Santiago finally confessing that it was true. I'll find the episode for you to watch. It wasn't that long ago.
Newbie-O-K

Karen--I found it. It is Episode #73, Dec. 20.

"She assures him [Daddy] of her trust he's innocent, and he confirms the woman in the grave is her mother. Gabriela's surprised to hear that besides Yolanda, David and Mario, Leonardo also knew -- but didn't tell her because Santiago begged him not to. He anticipated waiting until they had evidence against Adolfo, he reveals.

When Gabriela frets her false name makes her marriage invalid, Santiago insists that can be remedied if she wants -- that David has been wonderful and is a great guy. Wretched Santiago grieves over his life as a fugitive, while Gabriela regrets tearfully she and her sister could have shared his pain." (From the recap.)
Newbie-O-K

Jarocha, I’m so proud of you.....I know you’ll miss Veracruz, but think how much you’ll learn in your new environment. Also, I agree with you on your comment on Yolanda and Carlos, “I want them to become independent to Adolfo and realize that they don't need them as they are each other's family.” I have always had a differing point of view on seeking approval from family members that CAN’T give it, **Get the h*ll out of Dodge, live your life WITHOUT them. They’ll only take you down.** That is why I so loved Mi Pecado, Lucrecia was strong despite her unloving mother. When Carlos couldn’t find work, I think he should have gone to the US and leaned on his contact there, not go back to work with Adolfo as Yolanda suggested. Oh well, no one ever listens to me!!! Ha Ha

Aribeth, thanks for the links on EY, interesting guy.

We have 4 inches of snow and the city is almost paralyzed!

I also want to publicly send my loving thoughts and prayers to the Arizona families who are suffering. So sad......

Thanks so much for the info Newbie. I had forgotten that info so the sisters going to the grave seemed more connected with the David/Fausto discussion than prior episodes.

Thanks for the link for EY Aribeth.

Thank you Vivi for your great recap.

"Hello future mom". Paula is really putting the pressure on her dad to hurry up and get married, isn't she, lol. Well at least Leo is over Gabi, which is good.

Thank you Aribeth for the link to the EY interview and old novela clips. So long ago and so young.

I wonder if those other 2 security guys are suspicious about what happened to David, or are they knowlingly covering up for David. If they are suspicious they better speak up to prevent any attempt on Mario.

The more I look at Roberto and his sliminess I wonder, did Ale let him be intimate with her, and if so, how could she bear him to touch her or kiss her, yuk.

Margaret

Sorry, should read:

"or are they knowingly covering up for Edgar".

Margaret

Vivi, your recap started of with a bang and kept barreling ahead at full throttle. Everyone’s already covered most of my favorite lines, but also “Carlos sits and admires his only visible proof of fatherly affection” nailed so well the pathos of Carlos’ craving for his father’s love. Thanks for explaining “depa.” Not knowing the meaning of that simple little word was driving me crazy.

Aribeth, thanks for the EY interview and summary. I’m always interested in things EY and I’m not surprised that he’s a complex man. Gabi looks like a lot of fun. Too bad Adela Noriega wasn’t interviewed, but I understand she avoids the press.

I think Elsa will continue to do right by Limon and JJ with Caramelo. As Sandy noted, Elsa went out of her way to reassure Limon. A part of her is always going to be in love with JJ (no one completely gets over their first love), but she does love Mauricio. What I think could provoke Elsa though is Ale getting closer to Caramelo because I do think Ale will soften.

Una pregunta ..for the experts....
My Spanish teacher who is from Spain does not know the answer, and I cannot find the expression in a dictionary. ...

This is an expression that sounds like "Proprio or Propio" -- it is used often in novelas. For example, when a person excuses himself to leave the room, the person remaining says this expression. It is an acknowledgement something like "very well," or "ok," but possibly slightly more polite.
How is it spelled, what does it mean, and what is its origin?
Thanks for your assistance.

Floridia-

If you ask somebody "con permiso" (with your permission) and they respond "propio", it's like saying, "the permission is yours/your own". It's pretty unique to Mexico.

Vivi, it was great.

"and also seems to have retrieved her skirt from Elsa / his favorite student is excelling so well in Amoral Behavior 101 / Silly Daddy, of course little Nancy Drew already knew. / lobby for Phase 2 of plan Get a Mommy / She thinks he’s being a bit of a drama queen. / Bertha tells her fellow skank, uh, friend / He gives Yolanda the fake ring, out of the goodness of his heart / Oh, Carlos. That is such a lost cause. I see more time on the doctor’s couch.

-> lol, lol and lol

I loved how Yolanda screwed up Adolfo's cunning plan.

Dora. Adolfo will hurt your family no matter what you do.

Finally Elsa said the adoption may not be permanent. That's what I wanted to hear. Even if she and Medina will end up as Caramelo's parents at least she gave Limón hope. Now the old man has to start learning.

***

As for EY: it seems he still has a ways to go to get over his anger issues

I don't know. He's already 50 years old, but from what I heard when he gets angry he still acts like a fierce teenager. However, until he remains the same extremely vivid, passionate, funny guy onscreen I don't care if he calls every second journalist/rude fan "gorda asquerosa". ;) He isn't in Julio Alemán's league but I wish him the same "charismatic daddy/uncle/villano/episode guest" career for the next 25-30 years.

***

Jarocha:
International Studies? That's one more reason why your English is so fantastic. :) Btw, my best friend graduated in I.S., too. She had to pass two language exams - she already got through the "business English" exam in high school and since she hated German and French she decided to learn Spanish. And I said: Hey, may I join you? I'm tired of German and Spanish sounds cool. So we spent two and a half years in a language school.

Wow, thank you for the very interesting informations about Lecumberri!
I'd love to watch El vuelo del águila but it's one of the many Alonso novelas that can't be downloaded from anywhere. I have Bodas de odio, Senda de gloria and LA antorcha encendida, but no eagles and original Montes de Ocas yet. :)
So... our beloved Fabián got his first role in an Alonso show? That's great. And I know his dad, Fernando Robles played the alguacil in CS93 and he had a role in Yo compro esa mujer.

Newbie,

Just read your response to me of Jan. 9th; How right you are! this is a novela and the most intriguing one I've seen. Still,
it would fit in if Adolfo did not
realize that he lost the cufflink at the crime scene...and then had the remaining one made into a ring for Carlos. Now that it appears to
be coming back to haunt him 20 yrs. later, he is taking precautionary measures.
