La Verdad Oculta #105: Édgar and Valentín conspire to double double-cross the bosses

Carlos learned of his parentage and ran straight over, Gabriela tells incredulous David; and now Santiago must hear she has a half brother, too. At Santiago's, already privy, he admits to Gabriela that his time-burnished idealized image of her mother was mistaken, as he recently also found out.

Julieta enters, and Gabriela reveals she must change her poor opinion of Carlos now that he's family. Across town at a bar, former pals henchmen Édgar and Valentín re-encounter each other over the restroom urinals. Back at Santiago's, tearful Julieta hears that Roberto killed the maid and Carlos is as much a victim as they.

Julieta's horrified that Carlos must realize his father killed his mother; and the girls now appreciate Santiago's sheltering them through the years. At the Mirador bar, Carlos and Juan José tie on an excellent one, courtesy of limes and the bottom of several tequila bottles.

Juan José toasts his dear mother in heaven and sympathizes with Carlos's tragic lack of one, whereupon Carlos amazes Juan José with his new relationship with Gabriela, which old one fortunately never went anywhere. Even though Carlos was crazy about Gabriela, he assures Juan José nothing occurred between them.

When they toast that happy happenstance and that life is good, even if they're poor but honorable, Carlos objects. No way does he want to be poor: he always loved money! And when Juan José assures Carlos he can help him a lot around the Mirador, ever ready Carlos dares to ask if perhaps he doesn't have something even better?

Back at the cross-town bar, Édgar and Valentín discover they have things in common: family they need to take care of -- and nasty bosses, who coincidentally also have an operation in common. At Alejandra's, she and Asunción agree to use informal address together over their mutual worry at Juan José's lateness.

They're concerned to hear from the office that he and Carlos took off early; and Asunción is glad Juan José has Alejandra now. Back at the bar, the two henchmen hatch a plan to engender distrust between their bosses by way of a frame-up robbery and make off like bandits with the spoils -- with no one the wiser since they ostensibly don't know each other.

Jorge admires Dora's comfortable but modest hotel room, noting they could afford to live in luxury for a month on the money David gave her. Jorge intends to make sure Dora stays there until she's back at home with David; he won't lose much being away from his little pastime of a shop at home. He's enjoying being with Dora now.

Later at Alejandra's, she's frantic at not raising Juan José at David's or anywhere and is just about to phone Leonardo, when suddenly the strains of mariachi trumpets waft through the curtains. Peering over the bedroom balcony affords her a view of two drunken, happy men, belting lyrics and backed up by a full roving orchestra.

At Adolfo's penthouse, in supposed consideration of his health, Dante aggravates him by offering to make Édgar talk; but Adolfo needs the jewel information too badly for ham-fisted methods. Back at Juan José's, Alejandra is relieved the boyz are alright and makes Carlos stick around to sober up before leaving.

Asuncion stumbles out from bed, and Juan José sings Carlos's praises to him. Back at Dora's hotel cafeteria, Jorge opines David could set Dora up in a nice business like that; and she asks him to check tomorrow what happened with the letter she wrote.

Next day at the women's jail, Mauricio reassures Elsa she's a good person when she frets she must have done something to deserve her terrible luck; she earnestly apologizes for her past indifference toward him. Mauricio reminds her he'll always be by her side as they join hands against the dividing interview room glass.

Elsa's distraught for Caramelo to hear her jail status will send Caramelo to social services. Meanwhile at Juan José's, the social worker emphasizes Alejandra's good reputation doesn't change Juan José's. And since none of them can manage to meet the legal requirements, despite good intentions, Caramelo will go to an orphanage.

In a restaurant, Jimena urges Bertha to hurry and marry Adolfo as soon as possible to become rich when he cacks. But Bertha's still pondering the horrible effect hearing of their impending marriage had on Carlos; and though Jimena insists Bertha should forget Carlos, Bertha isn't convinced.

Juan José and Alejandra have a plan when they visit David, Gabriela -- and Abelardo at Mario's. Meanwhile out on the street in the city, Dora takes Jorge on a double-decker bus tour and plans a rooftop luncheon with a view. Back at Mario's, Juan José and Alejandra delight Abelardo with the idea of him being Caramelo's temporary guardian.

Abelardo views it as an honor and a pleasure. On the tour bus, Dora dives under the seat in irrational horror of being seen by someone at the Mirador as they pass. At Mario's, David and Gabriela also love the idea of Abelardo's guardianship and insist that Abelardo move into the house with them there at Mario's.

Jorge is really loving being back in the city; and Dora is ecstatic, too -- especially considering that in the short time David's known she's his mother, he's given her enough love for a lifetime. In the kitchen at Mario's, joyous Abelardo's singing and whipping up a sumptuous feast for everyone's lunch.

At the rooftop restaurant, Jorge astounds Dora explaining he phoned and learned the letter she wrote was successful in its mission to put Adolfo in a fit of anxiety -- and in the hospital, in fact. At Dante's, he charges goon Carmelo to make Édgar confess the location of Gabriela's shoes, while conspiring Valentín listens attentively at the door.

And back at Mario's, the family is just enjoying Abelardo's feast at the dinner table when suddenly Gabriela spoils the mood asking "Mario" for a photograph of her mother.

Good evening. :-) Here are the You Tube links for Episode 105:

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Thank you for the wonderful recaps of Thursday and Friday's episodes Aribeth and Vivi. Spectacular pictures and of course, the summaries were spectacular.

Jeri, of course I loved the title and picture of the wily co-conspirators. But, beyond that: "his time-burnished idealized image" and "engender distrust" brought this marvelous recap to another level.

Although pleased, I was puzzled as to why Abelardo was made Caramelo's guardian. Wouldn't David and Gabi have been a more obvious choice?

Things continue to deteriorate for Elsa. I fear nothing will improve until and if Leo steps in. Someone in authority needs to champion her cause.

I love that Édgar is turning the tables on his reprehensible boss. He is crazy and cagey enough to do it. I honestly don't ever recall rooting for a murderer before so this is new territory for me :) I wonder where Susana is? I'm sure he didn't hurt her.

Ale's character is growing on me. She appears to be developing a sense of humor and a kinder disposition.

Thanks again Jeri - I can't wait to see what happens next.

Diana

Jeri- Fantastic as always. Your ability to condense whole scenes into pithy sentences always impress me.

LOL! That Gabi is never satisfied. Now she wants to see a picture of Mama-Ho, not knowing she's a carbon copy. Wonder how she'll react? But at least it's not like Santiago treated her any different because she looks just like wild Marta. He was equally strict with Juli.

There were some great funny moments this episode-- the drunken serenade; Jimena comparing Bertha to Ana Nicole Smith (the blond model who married the old dude who kicked the buck soon after and left her all his wealth); Dora and Jorge on the bus and him putting his little hat on her as she tried to hide; and the over the moon look on Abelardo's face as Ale and JJ asked him to step in as Caramelo's guardian. He was beaming.

Diana- At first I wondered why JJ and Ale were not asking David and Gabi and I thought of two reasons. 1) They don't want Cara to get attached to a new mommy and a daddy figure, starting a new Elsa-like nightmare. 2)Gabi's situation is legal. She's not living under her legal name and she and David aren't legally married.

It was so sad to see Elsa behind prison glass. Not even a visiting room like JJ had where you can touch people. Also sad that she seems to think this was somehow her destiny. :( They need to get her out soon.

I'm intrigued by this team-up of Valentin and Edgar.

Gabi's situation ISN'T legal. Sorry for the typos.

Thanks Vivi. You're right of course although I seem to recall that Abelardo might have had a few dustballs (if not skeletons) :) in his closet. But no matter, he's a wonderful man - I don't think I've ever seen him smile so brightly!

It would be natural for Gabi to want a picture of her mother. I'm not sure how she will react to the mirror image.

I'm looking forward to brighter days when all the secrets are revealed and the bonding can begin, particularly between Carlos, Juli and Gabi.

Diana

Diana- He was a drinker, lost his job and family, but I don't think he ever went to jail or has a legal paper trail.

Good morning, noveleros. :-) I had to laugh at Carlos daring to ask Juan José if he didn't have something better for him to do. I guess daring runs in the kids of Márta, eh.

Fabulous recap, Jeri; I was not watching as closely as I usually do and had missed some things.

I don't understand the new tactic
with regard to the letter. I know
it was sent with the intention of scaring Adolfo which it did. Dora did not sign it because she is still afraid. Yet I thought the
guys were talking about finding
her handwriting on an old application at Mirador. If so,
this would identify Dora. Thanks for clearing up.

Jeri, beginning with Saturday 2/19,
I will be viewing via the links
through the end of the novela.
As I posted earlier,I'll be attending a language school in Antigua, Guatemala for 6 weeks.
I don't know if I will have time to watch entire episodes, but I
can read the recaps, and I will have all episodes recorded at home for my return. I really appreciate your assistance and that of Aribeth and Vivi throughout
the duration of LVO. Your writing and comments have made the novela both very realistic and larger than life simultaneously.

I also would like to know if anyone else has/had difficulty
hearing the restroom or bar conversations accompanied by the
background music. Muchas gracias.

Hola, ladies! Jeri, thank you for the recap!

Screencaps:
link

Floridia, have a great time in Guatemala!

Jeri, for an episode where not too much happened, you made it a real happening!

Floridia--have fun and enjoy the weather, soak up the sun and humidity--oh, I guess you are used to that.

The sound tracks on all the novelas seem to be completely unrelated to the action. Sometimes they even have swelling concert-sized strains when two people are talking and something impactante is about to be revealed.

Yes, we all get annoyed by the loudness, especially when they are filming in outdoor restaurants. They can't seem to block the ambient sounds, then they add sound.
Newbie-O-K

Thanks for the very kind words, ladies. :-) So...who thinks Jorge is going to eventually propose to Dora?

Jorge does appear to be sweet on Dora, but most times it seems fatherly. He's just having a blast. This is probably the most adventure he's had in decades! Plus, she's also got Limon and Abelardo as options. :)

Jorge has grandkids still young enough to take to theme parks, so I think he is not old enough to be fatherly to Dora.

I think they might be setting up the situation for a proposal. When Jorge suggested Dora let David set her up in business, he volunteered to go into the business with her.

They were talking about opening one back home; but on the other hand Jorge made it clear his store is a hobby and he's going to see Dora's situation through in the D.F. -- and that he's enjoying being there with her.

Kinda interestin'.

Sorry, I do NOT want to see Dora with Jorge and definitely not with Límon. I know that Abelardo is fond of her, and he lost his family, so this could give him another start on life. My ALMOST first choice for Dora is Fausto. I want the 2 parents to live out their lives together close to their children. As I mentioned earlier, they are making Dora too old and almost senile-like complete with shuffling feet often in those horrible shoes. She looked fabulous at David's wedding and had on great stylish shoes in which she maneuvered well. Don Jorge, while kindly, is too much of an old fogey, and I think it would make him look opportunistic to capitalize on Dora's financial success via David.

BUT IDEALLY, I would like Yolanda for Fausto, but she has been so tainted with the Marta scandal and
the framing of Fausto. If she had had a crush on Fausto that would have made more sense than Don Mario.

HOWEVER, if Yolanda can be redeemed
to team up with Fausto, than I would select Abelardo for Dora.
They worked together for years; they know each other well, and he
loves the Genovés family dearly.

Too bad Piedad is not alive;
I would team her up with Jorge.

Gabriela, of course, will need to
reconcile with Yolanda after blasting her out over phone, and of course she will appreciate her kindness and affection for her half brother.

Limón still needs a lot of work

Newbie, thanks for your input re the background noise.

AND ....now that Abelardo is moving into la casa G., that would
be perfect for the Dora/Ab/ hookup. He can still run his end of the business, and she can run the domestic end with the assistants of servants. Perfecta!

Limon is OUT when it comes to potential mates for Dora. He needs to learn how to read first. He couldn't even put out the effort to improve himself to keep Caramelo; how can he marry Dora?

I don't see Abelardo with Dora. I think Jorge is the best one for her.

I wish Fausto, Mina & Yolanda would find love, too but it doesn't seem likely. I'm actually hoping Carlos will dump Bertha once she comes running back to him (and she will). Maybe Carlos could hook up with Mina?

Do Alejandra & Bertha know that Gabi is their prima?

Hello everyone!

Jeri, Vivi's right, you say so much with your concise sentences. I particularly liked this segment, "whereupon Carlos amazes Juan José with his new relationship with Gabriela, which old one fortunately never went anywhere." Well said and so true!  Thanks!

I was thinking about Gabriel Soto in this novela, he has had very little screen time. His part is loving, but l can now see why EY wanted JJ. If you were an actor, the part of Edgar is much meatier than even JJ.

Floridia, you have lived two lives. Once as a New Englander and now as a Floridian, completely different cultures. Did your interest in Spanish begin in South Florida? On your trip, I have used Jeri's links and a phone for much of LVO, but for posting, it isn't bad! On grandchildren and gifts, I too like to give or spend small amounts, in fact, Michael's is perfect because they have inexpensive crafts, which is so much better than expensive toys and more educational.

I would think a single guy would not be a social services option for a little girl.

Well, a problem with a Dora/Abelardo match up is that they worked together for many years with plenty of opportunity for something to spark, but it did not.

Abelardo is a super guy, but he does have skeletons in his closet of his own making. What I would not mind is if his wife reappeared and he has the chance to redeem himself with her. It would make him feel better about that.

In fact, not sure if Abelardo is actually divorced either. As far as Santiago goes, I think he might be a one-man woman, despite the fact Márta was a bad one. He's still in love with the girls' mother.

If I remember well, Abe's wife died years ago (after the divorce). No kids. There was a conversation between him and Fausto in the make-up room that I recapped a few weeks/months ago. But I'm not sure about it.

I would love Mina to find love - why not with Carlos?

Bertha isn't redeemable because she feels no guilt or remorse for anything she has done. One might argue she did feel badly that she hurt Carlos. My response is she didn't feel badly enough not to do it. She made her choice - Adolfo. I fervently hope she ends up alone and peniless, forced to do something completely degrading. Work!

No sympathy - sorry - Diana

Mina and Carlos are both beautiful people, but they have no karma to work out. I think Carlos might make Bertha jealous by dating, though.

Yolanda will probably be happy just being Carlos's mother; although she dresses lovely, we have not seen her with a man in a romantic sense -- either in flashbacks, dialog or on screen.

Sandy, IIRC from La Fea Mas Bella, single people are allowed to adopt in Mexico. In that show they had an adoption fair where prospective singles went to meet adoptive children in a party atmosphere. It was nice; one of the characters adopted a child.

I think they are playing Bertha very young and immature; and in fact, Magaña is youthful and pulls it off quite well.

As Gabriela said in dialog recently IIRC talking about Márta, we all make mistakes. Santiago would love to have Márta back, despite her being a bad woman, I'm thinking. And Bertha seems younger than Márta was.

Aribeth, I'm not sure either. I don't remember Abelardo saying his wife died...

Wonderful recap Jeri. I wonder how long will the show keep up hanging about whether or not Édgar killed Susana. Interesting plan that Édgar and Valentín have concocted. We'll see if it works.

JJ and Alex had to find out the hard way that just because they married that doesn't change anything and that Caramelo would be removed from the premises. Interesting that Abelardo would be considered to be her temporary guardian. Now I wonder will JJ apologize to Elsa for being so mean to her over the custody.

I wonder will Fausto/Mario let Gabi see the picture of her mother so she can she how much she resembles her.

Before I forget, I wanted to mention how funny JJ and Carlos was with the whole drunken scene and Mariachi Band playing. Carlos mentioned he loves money. He and Bertha are a perfect match LOL.

With Elsa's downbeat, tragic view of her doomed, luckless destiny, I'm back to wondering if they are going to kill her off again.

And then, of course, Mina could have Mauricio, who she said is "just her type" way back practically Day 1.

I found it: episode 72, around 4:40-4.55

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmzkAozB_xk

Sandy: after the assassination attempt our beloved David became a side character and he turned into a meatier Medina 2.00. The scriptwriters all around the world seem to prefer drama, and they think there isn't much drama for Dave anymore. Less drama = less screentime. Qué pena, because he's so lovely nowadays. In the meantime JJ's custody/blackmail/love battles got more screentime - which I don't mind because he's played by TBL-OMG (the best looking overaged Mexican galán :) - sorry, Fernando :P), but the writers screwed his character up. Though the forgiveness/bromance situation helped him much, and I admit, I find this storyline absolutely adorable. Unkempt, happy MM and EY drinking, giggling, crying and singing off-key together. Swoon.

As for the custody situation: the writers chose Abe because he was the least likely option. David (= the writers) was even joking about it. :) Viewerville, including me thought Ale and JJ wanted to ask Dave and Gaby to help them.
By the way, I kept saying all the time that if Elsa hadn't adopted Caramelo, the little girl would've not ended up in an orphanage because there were other possible legal guards. Though I was thinking about Gaby and Dave, but I don't mind Abe either.

From yesterday:
Jarocha, thanks for the interesting story. I know women are fertile over 40, and I have a relative who had her first and only daughter over 42. But I have a sister, too, who's together with her husband since the ice age, both are perfectly healthy, yet it took them 6 years and 4 in vitro fertilisations to have a child. (Our lovely Caramelo. I spent the day with them.) Maybe that's why I found hard to accept the fact that fragile, tiny Piedad had such a big, strong boy over 40. :)

Aribeth, thanks; Abelardo does say his wife died. But I wonder if that was a quick answer because he didn't want to go into the whole alcoholism back story.

Yes, those with less drama get less screen time, like David, Juli, and even Gabi. And JJ, and all who get involved with him, provide plenty of drama! But there really are just a LOT of charcters that can't be covered in each episode. Everytime we don't see someone for an episode or two we ask about them. What's happening with Elsa, Susana, Edddie, etc? But Adolfo is the star of the show, so he gets sreen time every episode.

Sandy,

Yes, my interest in Spanish began long after I moved here with my husband, 5 children and 2 dogs,
all of us seeking a warmer clime.
In high school and college in Massachusetts, I concentrated on French, hoping one day to be the belle of the ball in Gay Paris...
which needless to say did not occur.(Qué lástima that I never even got to Paris.) In high school I studied 3 years of Latin, and in college, only one year of Greek.
The final impetus for studying
Spanish came when my youngest child
decided to earn a Master's in Latin American & Caribbean Studies.
Now Spanish is my passion, and almost everything I read will be in
Spanish from now on. So much to do; so little time! I usually return to Boston each summer to visit my friends from elementary
and high school and a few relatives. One of my friends with 4 grandsons loves Michaels. She buys things there often.

Jeri, there was that one embrace
early on in Fausto's apartment between him and Yolanda. It was very emotional where they shared
tragic memories of their "beloved" Marta. I would like to see both
of them with a trusted companion to love. They need to begin to live a happy life without fear of Adolfo (well, I guess everyone does). They both seem to be operating on raw emotion.

Floridia, we're going to miss you! I hope you have a good time and learn a lot and are able to touch base with us time to time. My email address is available at my blog profile.

Diana, on Elsa, “I fear nothing will improve until and if Leo steps in. Someone in authority needs to champion her cause.” In total agreement....where is Braveheart in all of this? Diana, I also agree with your assessment of Ale, she has found her place and role in her relationship with JJ and Asuncion........the sensible one. (been called that myself!) She is becoming a loving, down to earth and needed member of the Victoria household.

Newbie and Floridia, on the sound, nothing will be as bad as Sorti, THE WORST NOVELA SOUND EVER! It is harder to understand Spanish when the ambient sound drowns out the conversation, but this type of situation has been rare in LVO, thank goodness! (I flirted with the idea of taking a CD of the bad sound in Sorti to a Nashville music studio to get their critique, but never did!)

Pirate Babe, “Now I wonder will JJ apologize to Elsa for being so mean to her over the custody.” She needs an apology. I must say that JJ did go down during his wedding and give Leo some pertinent info, he gets credit for that, a complete apology would be the cherry on top.

Aribeth you are too funny...”the best looking overaged Mexican galán” I’m glad you created the moniker...... “MM”.......our Carlos is in the running for “best looking” galan ever in my book! Also, I understand the importance of drama to the development and onscreen time for an actor, I’m just amazed the Gabriel Soto agreed to this! He must not have a “Hollywood” sized ego!!

OT......Congratulations to Nashville artists Lady Antebellum (5) and Miranda Lambert (1) for their great showing at the Grammys!!!!!!

Jeri, thanks for the wonderful skillfully written recap of another conversation laden episode. I tend to get lost in these episodes so I appreciate your help.

Regarding Abelardo, I once thought he might be interested in Dora but Dora seems to be in her early seventies and Abelardo in his late fifties...not a match for me. Funny how we like to find love for our characters... for me, I want to see Mina with Mau or Mina with Carlos.

LOL at Carlos wanting a promotion to a better position from J J before even starting work since he likes nice things. Sounds like I might have to pair him with Bertha if she ever redeems herself. She is reconsidering marrying Adolfo, again, at least. One point for Bertha.

Psycho Eddie seems bright but I don't know about Valentin. I'd love to see them pull one over on evil Adolfo and Dante. Seems like they were trained and worked as police until they went to the dark side for more dinero and thrills. At least they didn't join up with the drug cartels. Sort of scary that these trained officers are going to crime in Mexico and other places.

LOL, Gabi is still in the dark and after more info about Marta. Just tell her everything, already. Hope it happens in tonight's episode.

GinCA

Jeri, I just found your email;
I have a list of people I will be sending short emails in Spanish;
I also hope to join a gym,
and I will be attending school 8 hours per day, so there won't
be much time at the Internet cafe,
but I'll have a little time on weekends.

Ginca, You are right about the age
difference between Dora and Abe.
Irma Lozano (Dora) is 68 in real life, and I would say that Mario Sauret (Abe) is in his 50's. Still, they make Dora look too old for her age. JA from STUD is older that Irma and they gave her
a hot guy (Rosendo)to lust after.

By comparison in the US, we have
Suzanne Somers and Priscilla Presley, just a couple of years younger than Irma Lozano. I know that they are both over the top,
but as a rule, you wouldn't catch them playing old, shuffling-feet
personas. I just think that Dora
needs an image boost (similar to her appearance at the wedding)
Perhaps when her fears of Adolfo
have subsided, she will kick up her heels with joy and relief.

Jeri, this line said it all: “he admits to Gabriela that his time-burnished idealized image of her mother was mistaken.” Poor Fausto. Loved reliving this episode through your recap.

Niecie, what a sweet thing to say. :-) Thank you.

Thanks to everybody for reading and the comments and kind words. :-)
