Triunfo del Amor #25 2/4/11 Guillermo Bares His Fangs To Oz; Max Has Marriage In Mind

Cap. #25

Hello, Boils and Ghouls.  What’s cookin’?  It feels more like Cuentos de la Cripta [Tales From The Crypt] as Viewerville returns to Bernarda’s House of Horrors where Padre JP has just learned of Tomasa’s unexpectedly hasty departure and been introduced to Fausto Candela, the latest addition at Burnie’s creep-filled crematorium. (If you’re getting a good case of the willies from these two, you’re not alone!)  JP mentions there’s a foul smell of something like burned meat (or FLESH!) coming from the chimney.  He’s puzzled because the chimney is spotless, like it’s not been used.  He demands to know what Mama’s been doing in there!  (Forget it, JP.  You wouldn’t believe it, anyway.)  Mama turns around and stares strangely at her son, totally certifiable, as he waits for an answer.

At Maria Desamparada’s (chug-a-lug!) apartment, Linda-Who? is all bent out of shape. Maria and Nathy are giving her the evil eye while being forced to listen to her self-serving rant.  Linda is yelling at them, telling them apparently that what they think doesn’t matter to her!  Osvaldo Sandovaaaaal is going to come back to her; he’ll be hers and she’s not going to stop [no sacar el dedo del renglón= literally to not take one’s finger off the line of script] until she’s managed to get him back where she wants him!   Maria warns her of a little thing I like to term fatalistic payback and says  the hurt she causes others will come back to bite her in the end.  Linda could care.  “ --Enough of that.  We’ve got to get going!”  Nat wants Maria to tell Fabian “Hi” from her.  Linda The Friendly Ho asks “who?”  Nat gets to brag a bit herself about a guy for once.  She explains that he is a friend of hers that works at the Casa de Modas and who also likes the movies.  Linda is impressed that Nat’s been keeping him a secret from her (with good reason)! Nat says a bit snippy-like that he’s only a friend and she, for one, would rather be single than destroy a family!   Message received loud and clear. Linda’s smile does a 180 reverse flip as she and Maria leave for work.

Back at Burnie’s, JP still wants an answer from Mama.   She dismisses the question as absurd. She can’t imagine where he would get such a silly idea! Fausto speaks up and takes the heat, so to speak.  His explanation is that he set a fire last night because Sra. B was chilled and this morning he found a dead animal that must have fallen down during the night and gotten roasted.  He, feeling guilty about it, cleaned the fireplace up earlier that morning.  JP is satisfied and says he’s glad his mother has somebody around to do the heavy scut work there.  Burnie says he’s also to be her chauffeur and she’ll find a new housekeeper right away.  Problem solved.  Fiendish-looking Fausto watches furtively with his one good eye. (Word verification: goosebumps)

At the Sandoval’s manse, there’s a tearful reunion.  Everyone gets sappy about strong family ties that bind.  Feel the love?  Oz does.  Nothing will separate them ever, he says. (Unfortunately for Oz, he’s a day late and a peso short now that Linda The Lurker is on the prowl.)  FF>>

At Televisa, Guillermo is showing Ofelia his secret snapshot of Linda kissing Oz in his hospital room.  Ofelia gets a wickedly delicious kick out of it, especially now that Victoria has unwittingly given her rival a job as a model.  “--Little does she know she’s throwing a scorpion onto her back.” Gui crows about how Oz always says there’s no woman like Victoria and then continues seeing his lover on the side.  Ofelia wonders why Gui took the picture and wonders what he plans to do with it.  Gui says he’s not wasting the weapons Good Fortune sends his way.  Some day it will come in handy.  They then start giggling conspiratorially over their next tryst when hubby Pedro shows up.  He wants in on the joke.  Ofelia lies about their making plans to practice their lines over at Gui’s place.  He says great, since that will free him up to work on some scene outlines [trozos].  Seems the joke’s on him.

Back at the Sandovaaaaal’s, Fernanda is in the garden getting something out of her purse when Cruz comes up and says “Hi.”  Brat-Baby lets the impertinent working slob know in no uncertain terms he needs to learn his place.  She’s not about to speak to a lowly little gardener, she says, and struts away.  The smitten Cruz tells himself that she’s like a wild mare who needs only to find somebody that knows how to tame her--and it’s plain as day that he thinks he’s that somebody.

A bit later that morning, JP pays another visit to Vick at the office.  He’s apparently asked her why she gave Tomasa the money.  Vicki is explaining it was repayment for the money Tomasa lent her years ago when she left Burnie.  “She was the only one who took pity on [compadecerse de] me.  I told her she could come work for me since I knew that she couldn’t stand the way your mother treated her.”  “--Well, I suppose she used the money to leave since she didn’t say good-bye.”  Vicki  can’t believe Tomasa would leave without telling her!  It just isn’t like her! Vicki immediately suspects his mother did something to her and says as much.  JP wants to know what she means.  Vick tries explaining how Tomasa could have argued with Burnie after showing her the money Vicki gave her and then told her that Vicki had offered her work.  “--Your mother might have done something to her!”

JP asks if she hates his mother so much she’d think she was a murderer? (I guess JP has conveniently forgotten the lengthy, tear-filled discussion about the hell she put Vicki through when she was preggers with his bastard kid.)  Vicki essentially says, well yeah!  She could! He warns her that slandering [difamar] is a sin.  Vicki insists that she knows his mother better than he does.  His mama has him fooled, but Vicki knows who she really is and what she could be capable of!  JP, being a Man Of The Cloth,  forgives her for what she’s just said about Mama, and adds he really came to discuss Maria.  He mentions the fact that Maria donated her entire bonus to the Church for the needy.  Vicki essentially says bully for Maria.  JP says he came to tell her this personally so that Vicki would recognize Maria’s value and her many virtues --and her decency.  He doesn’t want her to ever reject Maria.  Vicki looks officiously disconcerted.

Back at Burnie’s, Fausto has passed his dependability test and Burnie is pleased at the way he thought so fast on his feet.  He did well covering up for her about the smell in the chimney, she says.   Fausto offers to introduce her to a woman he knows named Eva who would be terrific as a housekeeper.  She agrees to meet her but won’t promise anything.  He says fine, but first he has a favor to ask: he wants to pray with Burnie.

In the fitting room at the Casa de Modas, meanwhile, Vicki introduces the smiling Linda to Pepino and Antonieta as their newest model-to-be.  They’re to put a dress on her and give her their report.  Pepi and Toni recognize her immediately and are fumble-bumble impactados with the news she’s going to work there.

In another wing of the modeling studio, Max and Maria are giggling in between stolen kisses.  Oscar walks in on them by accident in mid mouth-meld.

When Vicki leaves Linda alone with Pepi and Toni, the two let the unsuspecting tart in tights know in no uncertain terms they know she’s Oz’s lover and they want her gone five minutes ago.   Toni takes charge since Pepi’s literally choking with anger.  Linda’s got her nerve, she says, asking for a job from her lover’s wife!  Despite Toni telling her that they both saw her and Os kissing each other at the restaurant, Linda plays innocent.  She claims they’ve got her mixed up with somebody else.  Pepi demands that Linda swear she’ll never approach Osvaldo again; Toni is a bit more practical.  She tells her to just get out and they’ll make some excuse up for her.  Linda refuses (natch) and says she is there to try on a dress and if they don’t get to it she’ll tell Vicki herself that she’s going out with Osvaldo!!   Pepi and Toni are faced with a nasty stand-off.

Meanwhile, Oscar’s phone goes off and Maria and Max notice him standing there with his mouth open and drawing flies.  Oscar excuses himself and starts to rush away but Max goes after him.    Max explains that he and Maria are truly in love and would appreciate if he would keep their secret.  Oscar, red-faced, stutters out sure thing.

Back in the fitting room, Toni threatens to claw Linda’s eyes out if she dares to say a word to Vicki about her and Os!   Linda tries a sympathy dodge.  “--What a nasty way to treat me on my first day at work!”  Toni hisses back that she’s so obnoxious she’s ready to slap her and throw her out of the place right then and there!   Linda snaps back at her to get her the dress or she will tell Vicki everything now herself!  Pepi and Toni freak at that.   Pepi gets her a dress.  While Linda goes to put it on, he swears to Toni he wants to kill Linda. (We’re right there with ya, pal!)  He has to make do with the mannequin, unfortunately, in the meantime.

Back at Crematory Central, Fausto is ready to fetch Eva for Burnie, but Burnie says she’s going with him.  No way she wants to stay stuck in that place with all the ghosts that haunt her continually.  Fausto takes her arm and explains he can’t because it’s a long ways away and very dangerous.  She says fine, he can take her somewhere she wants to go first and then leave her at her son’s church, the only place she feels really safe.  He says fine and they’re off like a herd of turtles.

In the fitting room again, Linda comes out in the dress (more like falls out of the dress, considering models don’t usually have basketballs for boobs).   Pepi growls that he’s never seen a dress look so bad on a body before.  Linda, though, is in love with it.   Pepi tries explaining that a gown has to lay properly on a model so that the design of the dress --not the model--is shown to full advantage.  Unfortunately, Linda’s multitudinous curves are fighting for top-billing right now.  ”-- This will never do!  Never!”   More man-handling of the mannequin ensues while Linda continues admiring herself in the mirror and Toni leaves to get Vicki.  Once Vicki’s in the fitting room Toni tells Pepi to explain. Linda takes over the conversation....”--Sra., it started out as a game, or rather a harmless flirtation--”  Pepi stops her with a couple of well-timed grunts.  Linda says she thought they wanted her to tell.  Pepi explains that Linda’s ...er...just too well endowed to model for them.  He refuses to work with Linda and that’s that!  Linda whines that she still really wants to work for Vicki’s company.

Toni tells Vicki that, despite her promising pearls to the Virgin, the girl simply doesn’t have the proper qualities [clase=quality bearing] for the prestige of their line [categoría de éste negocio].  (Quick thinking, Toni!  A woman I can totally admire!) Vicki takes the two of them aside and says she’s obligated to give the girl a job. (Yeah, that’s because if she doesn’t, Linda will sue her assetts off and end up owning the company herself!  Good thing for Vick that Linda thinks small.)   Toni says pay her off, give her a gift of some sort and get rid of her.  Vicki can’t go back on her word, though, she says. She asks Linda what other talents she has.  Linda says she trained in cosmetics and hairstyling.  ¡Perfecto!  They’ll put her in that department.  Linda thanks her effusively and then, while Vicki isn’t looking, the three stare daggers at each other.

Back on the set at Televisa, Ofelia slickly asks Oz if he’s heard the news yet.  Oz asks what news?  “--Don’t worry.  You’ll hear soon enough.”  She oozes off the set and pointedly ignores his puzzled expression.

Maria continues to practice the prance on the catwalk for Vicki.  Max walks in.  Vicki seems to be oblivious to the two’s conspiratorial smiles at each other.   A minute later, In walks the infamous Jimena who surprises Max with a major mouth-meld as Vicki beams in approval. Ruh-roh!!  Maria is waiiiit-just-a-friggin’-minute-here impactada as this pushy Puss ‘n Parisian Boots puts her paws ‘n claws on Maxie and reclaims her property.  Max goes with the flow.  Well,  it’s more like he stands there, arms at his side, and lets Jimena have her way with him.  He finally pulls away to get some air and then curtly excuses himself.   Vicki grabs Jime and the two embrace happily.  “--How wonderful to see you again!”  Vicki says she really feels badly about what happened between her and Max.  Jime says nothing really happened.  Vicki says, no matter, they’ll discuss it later.  More hugs and how-are-ya’s.  Maria gets tired of standing there like a third wheel and starts to leave.  Vicki calls her back and introduces Jimena as their company’s star model.  Maria is like well, big whoop!  However, she smiles politely enough to mask it.

Jimena gives Maria the once over. Vicki finally introduces Maria --but only as her new project launch.   Ah!  How long has she been working for her?  Since about the time Jimena left for Paris, says Vicki.  Isn’t she beautful?  She represented us in our designers’ award show and we won!  Yes, says, Jimena a little less than enthusiastically, very beautiful.   Introductions, such as they are, are over and Maria is back to third-wheel status again while Vicki assures Jimena that whatever went wrong between her and Max, it will certainly be rectified and the two of them will be back together in no time. Jimena swears that she didn’t do a thing!  Nothing ever happened, really it didn’t!  Vicki says they’ll discuss it later.  Just promise that she’ll do her best to reconcile with him.  After all, Jimena is the only woman she wants as Max’s wife!  (Duhn-duhn-duhnnn!)   Maria might as well be the dirt under their shoes.

Back on the Televisa grounds, Oz is saying good-bye to some fan and acting wanna-be.  Gui comes up and gives Ozzie a big bear-hug.  Gui then excuses himself and says he’s got an important meeting right now with the studio’s Big Cheese and he’s running late.  Oz asks him what it’s about.  Haven’t you heard?  No, says Oz.  Oh, well, Gui says he’s just been given the lead in the 9:00 telenovela.  Prime Time! Ah, says Oz, a big confused. He congratulates his BFF and tells him he’s on a roll! [tener buena racha= having a winning streak] Pedro walks up and greets Oz.  “--Well, I guess you’ve heard.”  Oz says, yeah, but he doesn’t understand since the big wig had already promised him the part. Pedro says not to worry, because he’s got a hunch they’ve got bigger plans for Ozzie.

Jimena is waiting for Vicki in her office and holding a picture of Max on her lap.  Vicki walks in and starts the heart-to heart with her.  Does she still love Max?  And, truthfully, did she cheat on Max and is that what made him break up with her?  Jimena swears nothing happened, that it was all malicious gossip from some envious rival.  She loves Max, loves, loves, LOVES Max!! More hugs and smiles. (Ugh!  ¡Ya, basta! My insulin level is off the charts!)  Vicki tells Jimena she wants her back modelling for her.  Besides, it’s the only way to stay close to Max, otherwise, she’ll lose him for good.

Meanwhile, Max and Maria are at a nearby restaurant discussing Jimena’s return and his mother’s reaction.  Max tells her not to pay attention to anything his mother says or does.  Maria, though, says she specifically told Jimena that she only wants Jimena as his wife.  “--What does it matter to you what she says?”  Besides, the only woman he loves is Maria, and that should be clear by now.   It doesn’t matter if the whole world is opposed, he’s ready to do whatever it takes not to lose her.  He doesn’t care if his mother never wants to see him again her whole lifelong.  Maria says it’s best now if he tries to talk to her and explain their situation. She’s sure if he tells her they’re in love that she will end up understanding it. Max says fine, he will.  They kiss on it.

Jimena walks into Max and Fabian’s office and she asks where Max is.  Fabian says he doesn’t know.  He went out.  She asks where.  He says he doesn’t know.  She leaves, but it’s obvious there’s no love lost between the two of them.

Vicki congratulates Oscar on the success of the ready-to-wear designs.  It’s just what she asked him for: quality dresses at reasonable prices.  Max walks in on the meeting and interrupts.  He needs to speak to her urgently, but she says wait till they’re home tonight. She’s got to finish this discussion with Oscar.  Max says fine, but he tried, so not to complain if she doesn’t like his decision later.  He leaves.

Pepi is now giving Fab a hard time because he can’t find Max and Fab can’t tell him when he’s due back.  Max walks in at that point and Pepi starts in with a cooking analogy about rabbits:  “When you cook two rabbits, one of them gets burned--if the both of them don’t burn you first. Understand me?”  He walks out spouting something about both of them getting vaccinated.   Max and Fabian can’t make hide nor “hare” of it.  (Sorry, couldn’t help it, it was such an easy lay-up.)  Max changes the subject and asks his BFF for a big favor.  Fabian doesn’t think he wants any part of it.  Max says it has to do with something that could change his life and his future permanently.  Fab’s intrigued.

Across town, Padre JP starts his quest to find his daughter.  The detective in Missing Persons needs the age she was when she went missing.  JP calls Vicki to ask.   Vicki is griping to Toni about the scene Max just caused in her office when JP’s call comes in.   He explains he needs the info because he’s going to correct the error he made veinte años before and get her daughter back.

Meanwhile, Maria goes to the church to pray that the virgencita helps Max’s mama understand that they love each other and that she will be a mother to her as well as to Max.  (The irony of this request is not lost on Viewerville.)

Toni asks what Padre JP wanted.  Vicki catches herself from giving away her and Padre JP’s secret while explaining that he was just trying to help her locate Maria.  Somebody else calls (Oz?) and says it’s to let her know that he went back to the studio to work.  She leaves word she’ll see him at home after she finishes discussing the Miami show.

We see Oz running through a take on the telenovela. It’s a wrap and in the can.  Gui congratulates Oz and says no doubt the role as a lover fits him.  Oz suspiciously asks what he means by that.  Gui says there’s no ulterior motive, he’s aware and it’s obvious [de causa]. Oz says if he’s got something to say, then to be up front with it.  Pedro wonders what the flippin heck [jolines] is up with the two of them.   Gui says coolly, that nothing’s wrong.  It’s just that Ozzie’s a bit upset now that the shoe’s on the other foot and the roles he used to get are going to him.  “--I used to be his extra--”  Oz calls him on it and says not  be so ungrateful.  He got Gui a lot of those parts for him. Gui says, well, perhaps, but it’s obvious that his career is on the down slide now.  Perhaps, he cracks, because of paying attention to his lover!  Oz starts towards him and the two have to be separated.  Oz is incensed.  “--Don’t talk to me like that!  You don’t speak to me that way!” Gui looks down his nose at Ozzie and tells him he doesn’t know how to lose. “--It’s a shame you’re one of those kind, Osvaldo.”  Oz starts yelling about what what an ungrateful jerk he is.  The crew has to hold Oz back.  Gui turns away, his composure in tact, and breezes off the set and out the door.  Oz, though, is fit to be tied!   He tells Pedro he just doesn’t understand why the guy would talk to him like that.  Pedro gives him an assuring pat on the back.

In the meantime, Burnie has got Vicki’s van in her sights just outside the company parking lot and Fausto heads it off, nearly t-boning it off the road.  The old broad snarls and then smiles evilly as Vicki screeches to stop and gets out to give the driver a piece of her mind.  Burnie rolls down the window and Vicki is startled to see who just tried to T-bone her car.  “--Hey!  You were just about to kill me!” “-Je-je!  Killing you is what I’d like to do and maybe some day I will manage it.”   Vicki barks back at her about what she came about.  Burnie says she came to clarify for her that Tomasa left.  She was very emboldened by the money you gave her,  Of course, we argued but she..er...left.”  Vicki screams back that she doesn’t believe her.  Tomasa wouldn’t leave without telling her good-bye!  Well, says Burnie coolly, that’s what you say.  I just came to warn you that I'm fed up with you pointing the finger at me every time that something bad happens.  That was all, she says, and flicks her wrist dismissively.

Back in the barrio, Linda rushes into the apartment in a huff, complaining about Victoria.  “--She is going to pay for it!”  Nat asks what she’s yapping about now.  Linda whines that because of that skinny jerk with his mama-mia’s and the faded blond lady, Victoria was convinced she wouldn’t work out as a model.  Linda was relegated to the dressing rooms to fix up the others.  Nat asks why “the declaration of war” from them.  Linda moans and groans that it’s because she was an idiot and they saw her out with Osvaldo.  They’re friends of Victoria’s and they got the better of her! Nat says, well, yeah!  What did you expect?  “--They even threatened to get rid of me, but we’ll see if they’re able to!”  The phone rings and interrupts them.  Nat manages to grab it before Linda does.  Fabian’s on the other end and is making some kind of arrangements with her and she agrees to race over.  Nat blows off Linda and rushes out the door without another word.

At the Casa de Modas, Fabian is getting off the phone just as Max rushes back in to his office.  Fab asks Max if he’s sure about what he’s doing, especially since he hasn’t let his mother know.  Max couldn’t be surer.  Anyway, she didn’t want to make time for him and he refuses to lose Maria because of it.  Fabian hands him a box with a ring in it and tells him Nat’s on the way also.  Max checks inside and says, “Perfect!”  (Wait a minute!  He sends his buddy out to pick out a ring for the love of his life?)  Just then Maria walks in and says she was told he wanted to see her.  Max smiles at her and gives her the box.  “--Here.  Take this and it will explain it all.    She opens the box and her eyes go wide.   Inside the box is a ginormous gold wedding band. “--I’ve always told you how greatly I love you, but now I’m ready to show you.  We’re going to City Hall [el registro civil = literally the city registrar’s office where they do civil marriages] and Nathy and Fabian are going to be our witnesses.  Because...because you and I are going to get married right away.”  Maria is speechless.  “--Did you hear me? This instant!” She looks up at him and smiles.  He looks back at her.  They get lost in each other’s eyes.  As Viewerville waits for “el sí” Uni decides it’s time to cue the darned kayak!

Thanks for a great recap! This was a full episode with lots of stuff going on and you captured all of it perfectly. I think "Burnie" is perfect. Mind if I use it, too?

I loved the alliteration of "Fiendish-looking Fausto watches furtively..."

I love Toni and Pepino as a pair...not as a couple, but when they are on screen together it's always fun.

I hope we eventually get some insight into Victoria's preference for Jimena. I may have misunderstood, but in the office I felt like they were talking about rumors of Jimena cheating on Max. I know Jimena said they were just rumors, but still.

Finally! I actually felt something for Max. I've been lukewarm on the Maria/Max matchup and I've been taking everything he says with a grain of salt...but last night's impulsive and romantic proposal was just great and I loved it. I know it will all blow up in a few episodes, but it "sold" the relationship for me.

For those of you who've watched more TNs than I: does it usually take a while to get into the story? I came to STuD rather late and was immediately hooked, but all characters had been introduced etc and the action was pretty steady. TdA has finally (after weeks) hit that point for me.

PS: Thanks, Jar for encouraging me to recap. I had so much fun with it.

Jardinera - Thanks for the recap. I caught bits & pieces of this episode and your recap filled in the rest.

I really wish Toni & Co. had let Linda tell Vicki about her & Os. Oh, wait, then that plot would be over & this telenovela would end in six months instead of lasting .... para siempre.

That WAS a big honking ring that Max gave Maria. I had to rewind to make sure I saw what I saw. Vaya!

Welll.... Lili is free(!) and back in town as Jimena. I hope we don't end up wishing she was still in the manicomio with Dr. Obregón. (okay... clearly I've seen too many telenovelas....)

Thank you for such a fun recap. Good episode, even with the exceptionally creepy Burnie and co. smugly describing the cleaning of the chimney. Yikes!

Yes, so good to see Lili (who I loved in MEPS) out and about, but not here screwing up the relationship between Max and Maria. Max definitely growing on me as well.

I can't stand to see how hurt Maria is going to be by what happens next -- the series of things that are certain to happen next.

Jardinera, thank you for the wonderful recap. This show is finally starting to show some signs of improvement.

Fausto is kind of creepy and teamed with Burnie they are just plain scary. I wonder who Eva will be? Another wacko probably.

Pepino and Toni were my favorites last night, too bad they didn't spill the frijoles.

You comment about the strong family ties that bind - really only blind them.

Rosemary

Excellent and I love the introduction! Now we know what the Cryptkeeper's inspiration comes from.

JP is in for a rude awakening about Bernarda someday which will be more traumatizing than learning the consequences of his own sins.

I give it three episodes max before Bernarda abuses the confessional. Nothing new to say about any of the other characters.

Jar: Loved the intro!!

The slicked back hair does not suit Gui at all!

The highlight for me was the interaction between Toni and Pipino.

Like UA, not much to say about the others.

LindaHO is an utter nuisance. I can't wait for Milagros to finally see what a HO Linda really is! Then, we will really have some action!

Gracias, Jar!

Susanita

"I guess JP has conveniently forgotten the lengthy, tear-filled discussion about the hell she put Vicki through when she was preggers with his bastard kid." you said it! As usual, a greatttt read, Jardinera. :)

My sister's been watching the show with me on and off, and she was super excited about Max's proposal. I was VERY happy with Max as well, but I told her, "The only novela that I've seen so far where the main characters got married that fast was CCEA...and then they got divorced right after!" lol! Let's see where this goes with Jimena.

Actually in the 1993 Corazon Salvaje Juan and Monica got married in episode 19 (out of 80). There have to be other examples.

Traveling Lady: ITA...I think Desinformada is in for a world of hurt. She is going to jeopardise her job, etc.

Just exactly what does this Ximena have that Victoria so desperately wants for Mad Max?!

Susanita

Jardinera i enjoyed your recap as usual.

Yea Lili is finally free from Dr. O's manicomo of misery, my question is why did she still look like she was hooked on them.

Sorry i don't see anything about her as looking like a top model either.

The impression i got she's claiming that Max believed some rumors that she was cheating on him from her rivals for his affections.

A man doesn't act like he did with her coldly on just rumors.

St. Bernard every time i see her i think if only they could have casted her in one of those vampire movies with Christopher Lee she would definitely fit in with that crowd.

She did give me a chuckle by the way she spoke to Victoria and then dismissed her.

I loved Pepi and Toni last night i was cracking up throughout that whole scene.I don't know what it is about Pepi from the fake Italian accent and his strutting he just amuses me.

LindaHo i really do hope she can back up all that talk she's been doing because once Victoria finds out the real deal. All heck is going to break loose then we're really going to see if she can back up that big mouth of hers.

Thanks, Jardinera, for another high-quality recap, loaded with laughs.
I liked Antonia and Pepino tag-teaming Linda. It seems to me that someone should write a TN about the humble serving maid who has to clean up all those rose petals and candle stubs that the rich and beautiful lovers leave behind. Someone has to do it and I never see the lovers taking care of the mess.
La Paloma

Hello I am new to this site and only ran across it today but I already kno I'll b a frequent visitor! What an awesome idea bcuz although I am fluent in Spanish I think in English : ) I am loving this novela and have been hooked since the 1st ep! I was drawn in from the commercials when I spotted the gorgeous William Levy and also I love Luis Miguel's vocals and that intro song! My thoughts on Fri's ep are that Vicki acted malicious with regard to Jimenas return, I thought she was supp play a good person but her character can b evil at times, & towards the good ppl at that (ie: Maria, Juan Pablo). Also I was very surprised at Max's marriage suggestion & how abruptly & non romantic things happened, I mean he didn't evn ask her to marry him lol simply handed her a ring box which contained what lookd to me like more of a mans wedding band? Her promise ring lookd btr, frm my limited view atleast. As much as I would like to see it happen jst to spite that unimpressive lookn Jimena & Vickie it doesn't seem genuine to me but we shall see...

Hi, guys n ghouls! All of us Burnie fans --seems this one should have been shown during Halloween.
===========
FoxyRoxy: Welcome! Along with Sara, our resident Spanish teacher, feel free to correct anything I've misinterpreted. Honestly, sometimes there are idioms that you just can't find anywhere and any help is much appreciated. : ? )
===============
Sara: Feel free to go with whatever you please, amiga! I don't think Jimena is being quite honest with Vicki either. I wonder why she and Fabian seemed to be polar opposites during that scene together.

My opinion on the time to hook the audience depends simply on the storyline and the way the characters are written/introduced. They either grab you in the
beginning with a true emotional hook or they don't. There were only three from the many I've watched that grabbed me from the start: El Manantial, Amarte Es Mi Pecado, and Destilando Amor.

La Paloma: "Tag-team" says it all. it was on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn't think of the words. Thanks, amiga! Love the idea about the Rose Petal Maid. Touchet! Ole!
============
Blusa: Toni & Peppy Pepi were fun to watch and I hope they continue to put Linda in her place and keep her in check, too.
============
Doris: That ring was bigger than Maria's whole hand, I think.
==========
Rosemary: "the ties that blind" --Good one!
============
Trveling Lady/Cielo/Urban: I don't think Maria and Max will make it to the wedding. Something tragic will probably happen to stop them. JMHO.
==============
Susanita: I would love to see Millie deal with Linda-HO once she finds out what a skank she really is!
============
I'm torn as to whether that proposal was romantic enough for me. Personally, I don't see the reason for the rush wedding, and I didn't appreciate Max sending Fabian out to pick out a wedding ring for him. He should have done that himself. Screwy writing.

Manuel & Matilde got married very early in the TN, probably in the 1st 5 episodes, But Amor Real is a whole different novela, (A GOOD ONE),my favorite.

Bernarda in one scene made me think of the evil queen in Snow White that gave her the poisoned apple.

Jardinera-Now that I've had time to think about it, I'm also questioning the proposal. Swept up in the moment I thought it was so romantic, but now I can't help but think he's acting like a petulant child who doesn't want his mother to control his life. I'm also thinking there will be something that will keep the wedding from happening. And whatever it is will keep the two apart for a while.

It seems to me there are quite a few villains in this one; granted to varying degrees. LindaHO being fairly mild, Burnie being the worst and Gui/Ofelia being somewhere on the Burnie side of the middle.

WORST/MOST EVIL
Burnie
Creepy Crispy Dude
Jimena (I'm just conjecturing)
Gui/Ofelia
Papa Padilla and Son
LindaHo
Fer
MILD/MORE LIKE ANNOYING

I think what appeals to me about the Pepi/Toni pairing is that they can serve the role of comic relief, but have qualities in their own right. They can be funny without chipmunk editing/stupidity. I think they will be the perfect foil for Linda. I hope they collectively play the quasi-Juliet's nurse role and help get our pair together.

PS: Variopinta-from now until the end of the run I will only see the Snow White Evil Queen when Burnie comes onscreen.

Jar- Another wonderful recap full of great snark! Burnie. Good one. :) One of Burnie's freak-outs was the Clip of the Week again on The Soup. Joel really likes this novela. I think it will be featured many times in the months to come.

Pepi and Toni were my faves this episode too.

I am also sure something will happen to stop the marriage. None of it feels right anyway, as Max has not yet had the valor to tell his family and everyone publicly that he is in love with Maria. He has not asked the nuns for her hand (hasn't he seen the Sound of Music?), and he is taking his very religious bride for a civil ceremony and not a church wedding. There are all kinds of things wrong with this and the writers know this. I am sure that when they get married for real, his proposal will be very romantic and appropriate.

In La Verdad Oculta the main couple got married very quickly, although it was initially meant to be a false wedding. They had both a civil ceremony and then a week later a beautiful church wedding, and have been together since. We will get another bonus wedding for them for sure because it turns out that, unbeknownst to her, her name is a false name and nothing is legal.

As far as novelas that grab you from the very beginning, I have found that it takes a few weeks for the action to get started. Mi Pecado grabbed me right away with the emotional complexities, even though the first two weeks happen entirely in the past. LVO had action and mystery from episode one and pulls one in right away. I think Sorti also pulls one in quickly since it starts right away with a false marriage and assasination attempt.

Wonderful job, Jardinera! It's the little throw-aways that get me:

"Fausto speaks up and takes the heat, so to speak."

"fumble-bumble impactados"

"the two let the unsuspecting tart in tights know in no uncertain terms they know she’s Oz’s lover and they want her gone five minutes ago."

-- among many, many other great lines and phrases.

Variopinta and Sara, Yes, the evil queen in Snow White! And this isn't the first reference either. Remember when the Young Victoria pricked her finger in one of the earlier episodes? (She was slave/seamstress for B after JP had left for the seminary). The needle hadn't yet been poisoned, but the literary lineage was clear.
-----
It's pretty funny that LindaHo will be working on make-up and hair. We've seen her talents in that department already -- María's disastrous makeover???
------
So Fausto. Wow. A crazy supernatural, horror film plot interwoven with the usual TN melodrama. Maybe. Did he make a pact with the devil that he wouldn't age until he had found and punished the person who killed his parents and ruined his life? And if he is out to punish B, what better way to do so than by harming the only thing she cares about (after money) -- JP?

I'm not sure yet where Fausto belongs in the hierarchy of evil. He never laid a hand on Tomasa. He helped B cover up the crime, which is different. (Maybe he thought the laws of man would never be able to punish her enough for what she has done.) I'm taking a wait and see approach with this character.

I simply added him right under Burnie because he creeps me out so much and is way too willing to do her bidding. He may just be doing the grunt work. If that is the case, I will change him to a footnote on the TdA scale of evil.

I am really looking forward to this week and the "wedding" or lack thereof.

ViviDC: Yeah, I think initial interest in a TN is one thing, but the grab-ya gotcha! depends on a person's own emotional experiences and world view. The writers have a hit when right from the start they manage to tap in to the greatest of those the majority of us feel as a whole. Guess that sums up successful storytelling in general, tho', doesn't it. --Anyway, tho' I like the show--I'm still not totally "grabbed" by it even now. I'm waiting to see what nasty stuff with Jimena they concoct for us. Same went for STuD.
=========
NoevelaMaven: I really enjoyed the ghoulish touch they've given us in this TN. They generally only hint at that stuff. I was impressed with the way they did the Ghost of Husbands Past for us a couple of weeks ago. I hope they can continue to make the ghoully stuff work. It's a real switch up and I think we die-hards could appreciate something different like that. : ? ))

Sara: there really isn't any one of the main characters, except for Maria, that I am rooting for all the way. They all have some really fatal flaws --tragic heroes I guess?

Jar: ITA...my money is on Milagros! If we think Victoria is going to give Linda Ho the business, jut wait until we see Milagros in action! Also wanted to add that "Destilando" grabbed me right from the start...plus...I learned about the tequila business in the process!

This is what I am waiting for: who is Eva?! If Eva is tied to Mr. Faustus, then this will be a tag team on St. Bernard!!!

Wowsers!!!

P.S. Foxy...welcome to this wonderful blog!

Susanita

Almost forgot: Desinformada is not so uninformed that she will jump at this chance at marriage. She is a good Catholic girl and I think she will see that Max is not being totally honest in his proposal. Firstly, he is defying his mother. Secondly, this is a quick way out in terms of dealing with Ximena (this chick was really a 'top' model?!)

Those reasons for marriage are totally unfair to Desinformada ( who remains Desinformada to me because of her continued attraction to St. Bernard).

Susanita

It's possible that strained atmosphere we saw between Fabian and Jimena could perhaps be he's the one who saw her cheating on Max?

We all know he's Max's best friend so that wouldn't be surprising, or maybe he saw her with another guy and told Max who caught her red handed and broke it off with her.

Fabian so far other than Jimena has never acted cold or slightly rude to anyone other than her.

I think your theory is a sound one, Blusamurai. It wouldn't surprise me a bit to find that was the case.

I'm with you Jardinera- I find myself rooting for the secondary characters: Nati/Fab; Toni/Pep...even Cruz and Fer.

Blusa: good theory! I bet it will prove to be correct.

Susanita

Susanita - My guess as to why Vicki wants Jimena for Max is that Jimena may come from a higher social & economic class than Maria--one that is equal to Max's, and it doesn't matter to Vicki that she, herself, comes from the same background as Maria.

Blusamari - I like your theory re:
Fabian & Jimena and think you're going to be right.

I wonder what Burnie will do when they all find out--which they have to--that JP was conceived out of wedlock also. I hope she's still alive and kickin' when they find out what a hypocrite she is, especially especially when Victoria finds out.

Great job, Jardinera. Once again some very funny stuff.

I'm thinking a lot like NovelaMaven. I'm betting that Fausto's goal is to completely and utterly destroy Burnie (good one) and that he is completely focused and imminently patient. Of course his vengeance must include that one thing that she treasures most, namely JP, who by my reckoning is his half brother.

I doubt that Maria will ever completely repudiate Bernardo. She is after all, her granny, and we've already seen that the power of la llamada de la sangre is fully enforced here. Thus, I also think that it is likely that Fer will turn out (perhaps battered and bruised) OK in the end since she is MariaD's sis.

So far my favorite lady is Ofelia. No self-delusion there, she has made an informed choice to embrace her dark side.

Loved Pipino's mannequin assault.

Max is still my least favorite character. He seems to have the innate ability to choose the very worst courses of action. A secret civil union? Yeah... very classy Max.

Carlos

Thanks, Jardinera. The novelas that grabbed me immediately were Alborada [my first], Amor Real, and Pasion. All the others took some time to catch my interest. Pepino is my favorite character in this show. I loved his reaction to Lindho...including hiding behind Toni at one point when Lindho advanced on him. Vivi~~~I agree that Joel seems to love this show and especially the Burnie character as she chews up the scenery...good times. Onward. P.S. Does anyone know if FC or Big Ed Yanez have new novelas planned ???

Max should lose the ascot. I guess it's supposed to remind us that he's a rich boy.

I'm conjecturing wildly here, but is it possible that Eva will be Crispy Critter's mom? Burnie did make the point of saying "Eva, the first woman" (As in "wife".) Is it possible that she survived the fire, too?

I wonder if Crispy even knows/realizes JP is his half brother.

Clearly I have too much time on my hands and I'm a little obsessed.

I don't know who Eva is either, I thought she was on another novela.

I suspect that Crispy Critter is using a pseudonym -- Bernarda certainly wouldn't forget the surname of the man who got her pregnant -- and that Eva is also a false name.

Faust approaches Satan this time.

The male villain of Abrazame Muy Fuerte was sucked down into hell after being shot dead and I believe something similar will happen to Bernarda.

UA: When St. Bernard gets sucked down into hell, can't you just hear the bass solo from Don Giovanni as wonderful background music?! Not sure if I want my beloved Mozart 'used' in this fashion, but it would be most dramatic music!

Doris: Good point!

Susanita

I'm imagining some fairly dramatic/creepy music for this.

Carmina Burana would be too obvious, wouldn't it?

Actually, I could see either. One thing about Mejia is that he can use great music at the appropriate times, and sometimes to accentuate the absurd rather well. The question always is does he know when it's over the top?

Urban: The Cryptkeeper is probably one of Burnie's biggest fans about now.

Gracias Jardinera. This recap is just what I needed to drag myself out of bed this morning. I am also betting on a matrimonius interruptus!

I tend to associate Carmina Burana with the film Excalibur which I think is a great telling of the Arthurian legends.

I was thinking more on the lines of stuff that gets put on Halloween CDs with titles like "Creepy Classics".

If Carlos Paramo is or will be a contributing composer, there is potential for something interesting for that.

Sara: The opening of Carmina Burana has probably been overused to death, but it never fails to grab one's attention.

The thunderous and wonderful opening is entitled: "O Fortuna, Velut Luna": Oh Fortune, Variable as the Moon".

Carl Orff wrote so many other things, but he will be forever remembered for this masterpiece.

It might just work for St. Bernard's downfall. :))

Susanita

P.S. I, too, suspect that Eva could very well be Mr. Faustus' mother. They will make a wonderful Tag Team.

Sorry, I should have given the entire opening phrase in Latin:

"O Fortuna, Velut Luna. Statu Variabilis"

The more I think about it, Orff's work is too good for St. Bernard!

Susanita

Vivi i have to agree with you on Max's proposal it wasn't romantic at all and most importantly i think he should have told his family this is the woman i love and i'm going to marry her no what.

He's going about it all wrong and good point about him asking the nuns who raised Maria for her hand in marriage.

Really he's not cutting those apron strings from Victoria if he can't stand up to her and get to treat him like a adult.

It's another immature and bad move by Max now we'll get to see Maria's response tonight. I do believe she has asked him when is he going to tell his family about them.I don't think she's liking sneaking around and hiding their relationship from his mother. This type of sneaking around is better suited for LindaHo' not a good Catholic girl like Maria.

Thanks for the recap Jardinera. Things are starting to come together in this TN. ITA w/those of you who think Max is going about getting married the wrong way and that Maria will not like it.

Thanks for a super recap on Supersunday weekend. ;) :D

I love the Creep filled Crematorium line. Classic and priceless. **Two thumbs up**

I think this marriage is way too hasty and Jimena may mess it up. Something will mess it up. Jimena looks like an obsessed type but other than that she is pretty more han when she played Lili. ;)

I would put Padilla and son up on the wicked list. Remember he raped Victoria. I have a feeling sooner or later his son will get back at his father somehow. But it won't be enough to redeem him. I still look at him supiciously. I too chuckled at the Pepino mannequin 'murder choke'. bi Lol and LMAO. I'm glad that their sort of comedic scenes are not chipmunk fast forward stupidity. Like past Mejia productions.

Ibarramedia

I can't stand that chipmunk-voice crap. There are other ways of making scenes funny. If anything, this series should have gallows humor instead.

The actress who played Tomasa was in the first novela I ever watched, Madres Egoistas. She played the cook (Nati) who was fired by Mariana, the female villain. In the "14 anos despues" part of the story they end up as hospital roommates when Mariana was in for plastic surgery to her face and Nati is in for an emergency appendectomy. Her visitors talk about how evil Mariana was without knowing she's in the next bed.

Karen/Ibarramedia: Glad you made it here despite Superbowl Sunday!

I've been wondering if Scuzzy wanted the money for the watch himself or was upset Papi Padilla stole it and lied about it, or if he is redeemable. The guy is just too squirrely to be redeemed for me.

One other thing is I'm thinking that Cruz may be from a wealthy family and is simply out seeing what the other side is like. Not slumming per say; on the other hand I don't see him marrying into Sandoval nouveau riche-s without having something more to his background than humility and honest work as a gardener.

Jardinera,I was out for several days because of Superbowl activities. I'm here now after a good night's sleep and catching up on the weekend.

The more I see Fausto's evil grin with him looking up with that cap on his head, the more he gives me the creeps. My instincts tell me that he is major bad news. Almost similar in appearance to Coyote's mother from FELS but not blind. Fausto unlike her seems to reek of evilness like a damien type. Soledad was a good person and a victim.

Just a thought, they could make Linda a swimsuit model. Her features and assets are more suited for swimsuits because it accentuates the curves and highlights the swimsuits. And also because I would like to look at her. ;) Ok Please don't throw rotten eggs and tomatoes at me. ;)

Ibarramedia

I would love it if Cruz were a prince masquerading as a pauper because that would at least mean that eventually we'd see him clean-shaven and in nice clothes. However, I don't see this going that way.

And I hope Pablo's next CD is ranchera. I am so not a fan of nortena. He must have done the last one for the paycheck.

Linda would make an appropriate swimsuit model; I was shocked at the fitting scene when I realized how tall she is.

Fausto is currently on a low flame and I can't wait for "Eva" to show up.

Yep. Linda is 5'10"

I wonder how tall Fernanda is.

Ibarramedia

Thought you might like to see pictures of Fausto Candela aka Juan Carlos Franzoni, anything but creepy
