Cuando Me Enamoro #13 Monday 5/9/11 I'm Glad I Never Had a Prettier Sister

Actually I never had a sister so didn’t realize that if one is self-absorbed and spoiled and wanting unearned recognition like Mommy Dearest dishes out, everyone else in the world is bound to be a disappointment. But then it is fun to help MD humiliate and foil said lovely sis. Feel free to correct, add, alter etc. I did this pretty fast and have been away from the details of the story since last week. Names still elude me at times. All help is good help.

We replay the insults and threats by Fina, Mati, y Renata about the reveal on the romance between Mati and Renata. and Roberta’s frustration and worry with the new beau preferring Renata. We start with Iglesias and Guerra harmonize on the CME theme song which is the highpoint of every episode for some of us.

Roberta’s girlfriend and she talk BFF talk about how yummy and desirable to be with Jeronimo. Mom only finds fault with old Jero and tells her to concentrate on getting Mati and foiling the unlovable Renata. Roberta, all dolled up, kisses MD and says she will go off to enjoy the bonbon Jero. MD makes faces, she’s really got her ugly face down pat.

Carlos calls Jero from Spain, telling him he has told Loria about Rafa. Jero says he is a bit nostalgic but only feels their lives are distinct. separate. He again swears revenge on Roberta for causing Rafa’s death.

Yes the horsey romance scene is easily out-sexed by Mati’s pantalones.

Jero and Roberta have a sexy kiss more sex on her part than his in front of the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

Adriana and Renata rehash the dinner party. Renata, ever hopeful, plays down the problem. It seems she can’t get a grip on how hateful Mommy Fina really is.

The doctor enters his office and advises a tearful sad Agatha who wants only the truth. If these tumors are cancerous she needs to know and needs to prepare for what ever unknown. Thanks to Dr. Carlos Loma, we know this to be uteran cancer so her tears are warranted and Adriana is going to be needing a new family...

Love the red bustier (pronounced bustiYAY) so chic for a young VP, one would think that Augie can actually see said garment when he invites her out to eat. To eat? she demures, he hopes it isn’t a bother so they can continue the “business” discussion. She suggests a restaurant where they can meets, didn’t catch the name.

Regina, her mother and Ines discuss the dinner at the Monterubbios. Guess she hasn’t heard how savage they are, but Who’s Afraid of Virginia....” I mean Fina.

Gonzo and Honorio guy-talk about how fine a woman Regina is when Constanza comes up also in sexy dress. Does Gonzo have any memory of meeting the young Regina? He seems puzzled but not sure.

Mati wants to go eat and shows a bit of jealousy in Renata’s protestations that she just has to do this business lunch.

Ines introduces herself as Regina’s collaborator/coworker as she meets Constanza and Gonzo and they go off to the foundation where Regina is delayed because of media filming about the foundation’s work.

At the foundation Regina is crying into the camera about wanting to find her lost daughter Regina. Gonzo has strong, strange feelings. And little wonder, Fina is fuming around the bedroom of I’m not sure who while deftly berating the maid. Notice how you can always tell the bad people by how shabbily they treat the hired help.

The brother and sister meet and are charmed by Regina who thanks them for their interest in her beloved foundation and its mission.

Picture and song only scene of Roberta flirting with Jero as they visit the lovely center of DF (Mexico City). eating ice cream, laughing, thanks for no inane dialog. Wow vengeance can wear a handsome face, neither butter nor ice cream would melt in Roberta’s mouth and Jero keeps his poker face and game on too. ***

Augie awaits Regina’s arrival as he is every bit the connoisseur smelling the wine cork and then suavely presenting Regina a long stem red rose that so perfectly matches her bustier. I love punctual women he says, what a romantic way with words. She relates that she is happy to find people that will help other people fall in love with the gastronomy of her country. He demonstrates the wine and she finds it delicious. They flirt over the properties of the wine. He invites her to learn all about good wines UNDER his tutelage. He urges her to come to the winery soon to see for herself.

Gonzo appreciates and flatters Regina and her mother who is so young and lovely too. they are all in a swoon of flattery and friendliness. Constanza and Gonzo invite the ladies to dine but Mom chines in that her daughter is physical therapist too dedicated to her work and has no time for lunch. They hope for another day. Fina interrupts Gonzalo’s happy time on his cell phone . She can’t find the guest list in his office, he tells her where it is, she finds it and he turns his attention back to the pleasanter room full of nice women.

The manor managers Matilda and Lazaro argue over her naive wish to win over Jero. She tosses in his face his love for a doctor that turned him down (gee who could that be?). He warns that Matilda is cruising for disappointment in setting her sights on the patron, Jero. Matilda dreams her foolish girl dreams of being the lady of the manor not paying attention to the shawl she is being dramatic with is just a tablecloth not a great lady’s lace manta ...

Augie and Renata talk about going to the winery to see the operations while in the background Jero and Roberta are being seated in a not far enough away table. Makes you wonder with all the hundreds of fine restaurants in DF, it just makes you wonder...

Adriana eats lunch in the office with uncle Honorio and Mati. She talks incessantly of her mother raising her alone Mati compliments that her mom sure made her a hard worker.

Agatha cries and looks at a picture of her long lost love, Ariana‘s absent father perchance? I didn’t catch the photo while I was typing, anybody get a good look? Hopefully she is writing a letter to finally tell Adriana who her real father is.

Regina and Ines talk about how Constanza had indicated that the handsome Gonzo’s wife Fina is a nasty piece of work. (A testament to her great acting ability that Rocio Banquells who appeared as a saintly mother and wife in Pasión is such a complete devil here, It’s hard not to spit on the tv screen but with all the dust here in bone dry NM, I wouldn’t be able to see the action to finish this piece.

Ines gets a call that her son has been rushed to the hospital so she and Regina rush out the door.

Gonzo and Constanza talk more about how lovely and noble Regina is. Gonzo comes up with the great idea to invite Regina and Inez to Mati’s party . Oh, great idea Gonzo. The irony isn’t entirely lost on Constanza.

In the ladies room, Roberta smirks into the mirrors, hears Regina entering while blabbing into her cell phone, so sis Roberta hides in another stall so she doesn’t have to face her. She primps on the way out with another sneer. Meanwhile Augie spots Jero and has the waiter send a bottle of wine over to Jero’s table. They discuss that the wine was one of Rafa’s favorites, it has such promise. Augie knows the impact of his gift. Just to add my 2 cents, He did intimate to Rafa that he was wiser and Rafa would just screw up launching his wine with out his help. That wasn’t so GOOD. They discuss that they are both with exceptional women without saying who they are with. they go back to their respective tables to await the exceptional women.

Roberta carps at her BFF that she doesn’t want Jero any where near Renata until she Roberta can snare him for sure. Roberta carps like a Fina clone that Jero isn’t giving all his attention to her. Right then to prove her point, Renata walks behind them and Jero can’t sit still he says he’ll be right back, Roberta snaps that she will have to eat her whole meal alone but Jero doesn’t seem to hear as he rushes after Renata who step into her pumpkin coach with just enough time to hear Jero’s yell to stop. She does turn and see him from the rear window but is distracted by a phone call, we go to break wondering if she will talk on the phone, stop the car, both, neither, so much action, whew!

Jero turns back empty handed, the call Renata takes turns out to be Mati who wants to know who Augie was and then talks about how he now feels better about Adriana and her complex life with sympathy. Renata calls her an great gal (tipazo) and compliments his understanding way with his employees.

Jero questions the hostess about who was the thin beautiful woman who just left. The hostess shrugs. Carping voice revved up, Roberta is not pleased that he dashed off but he mildly makes the excuse that he saw a friend Adriana and tried to catch her. It’s not important. Roberta pouts and fumes.

Renata remembers the stolen kiss with Jero then is really kissed by Matias and given yet another rose.

Gonzo calls Roberta who is in her car and tells her to add the two new guests to the party list, tells her he loves her, she loves him too but thought carps that he loves her but adores Renata.

Adriana and Renata talk and she tells who she saw out of the back of her cab. Adriana decides this calls for a good throw of the old Tarot cards, were they in her pocket?? After a shuffle or two, Renata draws a card and Adriana insists that someone is coming into her life to change her definitely. Off in his hotel room, Jero is swearing some day he will see her face to face again. He gazes at the profile of Renata in the photo of her with Regina while seeming to ignore Roberta for the moment.

Roberta and BFF talk poolside about how Jero is who Roberta must have, and why? because he is more of a man than she has ever known. I’m thinking about poor ghost of Rafa who so sincerely loved her, the only one really, while she could not feel it with her heart of ice.

And the sprint to the finish line. The hospital scene with Inez son with tape under his nose, I didn’t catch how he got that way but the doctor states that studies and observation are needed, they get the name of a specialist, the identity of which makes Regina tear up with knowledge. Edit: Again our sage medical advisor, Dr. Carlos Loma has deemed this to be TNICL (telenovela induced childhood leukemia) with a 90% cure rate.

Renata and Matias enter a bar finally the bustier looks so appropriate. They talk about how worried she is that she lost contact with Rafa. They joke with the bartender that her friend or novio didn’t come in Mati says he must be friend since he himself is the only boyfriend. Cristian the bartender suggests don’t they want to stay for a drink. They decide to stay and Cristian calls Jero and tells him that the lady came in with her boyfriend asking for Rafa and Jero takes off.

Augie talks with his slicko business partner, who is the drinker (was this the doctor partner of Rafa who was taken in my Augie?) his wife hears the plans to substitute wines or is this some other bait and switch?. Sorry, I missed some of this obviously dastardly plan. Edit: DD (Drunk Dr., thanks Dr. C,) is encouraging Augie that his plans to take over the hacienda are so likely and is talking about clearing out the staff and substituting new workers who won't interfere with plans to hoodwink the public. Maybe we will see rotgut wines slipped into to the product line.

Jero arrives at the bar too late to catch up with Renata/Adriana.

Mati and Renata argue more about Rafa, Jero berates Cristian the barkeep for for not calling him fast enough , which he did but they left when he was going to the wine room, (bodega). Jero sees a call on his phone from Roberta and puts his phone away without answering.

More carping back at the home ship, Gonzolo and Fina argue over more guests and who they are. When Regina appears on Televisa and Fina gets that OMG ITS HER, look on her unhappy face, it all starts to add up.

Next steps: Renata and Jero finally meet and talk with dreamy looks on both sides. Looks like Roberta is going to press herself further on Jero and shows up at this door. Maybe stalking is in her future endeavors? Buenas noches, amigos.

Cheryl, would be more than happy to send some of our rain in the Midwest your way. We've had our fill here.

Thanks for the recap. I'm still hanging in on this TN because I love Silvi and some of the others, but the endless setups episodes are getting to me. Hopefully this isn't just the actual pace of this one.

Part of my sometimes boredom watching is that the bad-guys in this one just aren't "delicious" enough. Not that we want murders racking up, but they just aren't e njoyable to watch and there's sOOOOOoooo much whining instead by said characters. Whining does not a villian make.

At least we get to see Jero and Nata finally meet. And then I'm sure desparate sis and mom will start to weave their web of misunderstandings? Maybe things will pick up then.

Cheryl, thanks for the recap. I have to agree with daisynjay that the villians don't have the "usual charm" like we saw in Eva or Llena.
Do enjoy Renata and looking forward to more interaction with Jero.

Excellent, Cheryl. I'm so glad that you are back recapping. This show suits your style well... I'm sure that I mean that as a compliment.

Medical observations:

Since it was determined yesterday that Honorio is Adriana's missing daddy, he is happily married to Constanza but they are childless, Agatha has cancer of the uterus and delayed seeking treatment... Well, it's likely that Agatha is a goner leaving Honorio and Constanza as Adriana's parents.

Inez's kid had a spontaneous nosebleed. Even non-medical TN fans know that:

child+nosebleed=leukemia (100%)

Fortunately the cure rate for leukemia in children in TNs is about 90%.

Carlos

Cheryl, thanks for the recap and it good to see you are back in the states safe and sound.

Dr. Carlos is grumpy this morning with the downer diagoses. They better get DD on fast or you will have the whole cast doomed. (Just kidding)

I think our villian Agustin has plenty of charm!

Roberta is charmer, no wonder the guys alike Renata more.

Rosemary

Thanks, Cheryl, for the excellent recap. Your comment about "Makes you wonder with all the hundreds of fine restaurants in DF" reminded me of similar nonsense in "El Clon." We all got to refer to places as TOBIM ("the only bar in Miami") and the like. So far, we certainly have TORIDF (the only restaurant in el Distrito Federal), TOBIDF (referring to La Mentirosa, the only bar in el Distrito Federal), and perhaps something about the borracho doctor being the only doctor in wherever it is that Rafael had his vineyards.

Daisynjay, I agree that these bad guys/gals don't seem nearly as interesting as those in other TNs, at least not so far. Fina is just a one-dimensional caricature, IMHO. There may be more promise for Augustin.

Carlos, thanks very much for all the telenovela medical info, and also the bit about Honorio being Adriana's father. Somehow I missed that.

Rosemary, I was promised Alfonsina (DD) early on and now... no Alfonsina. The other DD (Drunk Dr.) mentioned her to Augie during their phone conversation but...

Juanita, I don't think that it's been verified that Honorio is Adriana's dad but I was convinced by those who think that he is.

Carlos

Thanks Cheryl!

Mommy Fina was rummaging around in Renata's bedroom looking for something to "get her" with. She grumbled because she didn't find anything. "Fine", she said, "then I'll just have to fabricate something".

Love the "butter or ice cream wouldn't melt" in Roberta's mouth - so true! LOL!

Audrey

I am so enjoying the cinematography on this novela. Some of the best I've seen. And everything looks so natural - it seems REAL rather than the exaggerated fantasy-land so many novelas create. I just love the sets.

The characters seem like real people too. It's very appealing to me. Maybe this is why the villains don't seem to bad, they aren't so exaggerated. I like seeing a villain frustrated most of the time. But Fina has already done some pretty heinous things so far.

Audrey

Thanks for all the helpful comments amigos. Daisynjay and Pata, We do love our intense baddies, don't we. I am surprised at how whining has ramped up so fast. Roberta seems oblivious to her privileged life and we were shown only one or two instances in her chlidhood of feeling sympathy for Mommy's mistreattment of Renata. Jero seems like he will be trouble as he pursues his revenge but I hope Carlos will bring us some "Meester James" sweetness, I like that actor so.

Rosemary, thanks for the welcome back. I really felt safe but am sad abut the Tamalipas problems. Have you noticed how the Mexican citizens are beginning to march and protest this heinous situation, they are fed up. I hope it leads to the government taking the controls back from the narcotrafficking would be dictators.
It seems that the childhood crush and adoration Renata had for Matias has not translated into the steamy heat we would all like to see. Both Jero and Augie are more ardent suitors but Augie doesn't seem to interest Renata, she seems surprised at the attention.

Carlos I so appreciate your medical contribution here including the TN odds of diseases we see often. And thanks for your kind comments. It is good to be back. These people make it easy to slip in to my sarcastic vein which doesn't always happen immediately, no down time with this TN. I will go in and make some corrections to those scenes and hope for our little bloody nosed guy, he's so cute. Oh, and Carlos, did you see the picture or did I miss some other clue that Honorio is Adriana's baby-daddy?
Juanita, I love the TOBIM tag. I wish they would film a scene at our CarayCaray Queen Mariana Karr's restaurant with her as chef. That would be ironic and she could use the work. Besides her empanadas are unforgettable.

Ahhhh, amiga Cheryl you have such a way with words. I'm thrilled that you are recapping again. You describe this perfectly: "they are all in a swoon of flattery and friendliness". What a great combo understated snark and complete accuracy. "Thought carps", hee! Excellent.

I don't understand Fina; if Jero is a successful and wealthy businessman why wouldn't she want Roberta to make a play for him? Is the Monterrubio fortune that much more? Seems to me that if Rob hooks up with another rich guy, plus her own share in daddy's money, wouldn't that be better? Just thinking aloud here.

ITA with y'all that these villains so far are very run-of-the-mill. Perhaps they seem more so because they are following our dastardly duo of Fedra and Lowrenzo who displayed such flair and panache in their villainy. I miss them. However the villains in this one show promise, so I remain optimistic (but realistic that Fina is no Fedra).

Name of restaurant not important as there is clearly just one in the entire DF. TORIDF works for me.

Nope, didn't get a good look at Agatha's old flame.

Carlos, thank you for your medical prowess in explaining the kid's nosebleed. (No, I am actually NOT being sarcastic here, I really mean it.) Also agree with you about Adriana and after last night am fairly convinced she is Honorio's progeny. Poor Agatha, I like her so far; too bad she's inconvenient.

Thanks Cheryl! Smashing and funny recap!

Ack! Too many sick people! Why do we need a sick child in the mix?????

I agree with the speculation that Adirana's mom will die & that the letter she is writing is to let Adriana finally know who her father is. It has not been established by the show -- but I agree that the set up of sick single mother followed immediately by the happy couple who only wish they had a child is too obvious not to mean that Honorio is the missing dad.

Great recap, Cheryl. I loved your side comments -- eg you can always tell the bad people by the way they treat the help & Fina's really got her ugly face down pat.

The doctor in Baja must know that his wife still has a thing for Mathilde's brother. He was so obvious with the flowers & affection in front of the ex the other day and today he is trying to get Auggie to fire the whole staff -- including the handsome, brooding, ex-lover foreman.

Sylvia,

"Poor Agatha, I like her so far; too bad she's inconvenient."

Exactly.

Carlos

Carlos, I saw your explanation about Honorio being the most likely suspect baby-daddy and agree with the logic. It also would set up the sweet Adriana to have the lovely Constanza as a loving mother since the death certificate is all but signed on the real mom.

Audrey, thanks for catching whose bedroom, Fina was ransacking. The room is so hotel severe and gender neutral, I couldn't decide between her getting Renata which we know is a foregone conclusion or Roberta's room so she can keep ahead of her wayward man stalking tendencies.

Güera, I just re-watched the scene where the Doc was talking to Augie on the phone and you are correct. Augie tells the doc that the hacienda is as good as his so which personnel should they keep. Doc says Alfonsina knows everything about the vineyards so she stays but everyone else is replaceable (sustituibles). Now why anyone would want to replace an entire working staff is beyond me, but I think your theory is that the Doc is trying to stick it to Lazaro and I would agree with that. OK I just thought of a reason why Augie might want to fire the staff - if he utilizes shady or underhanded practices in his winemaking or growing then surely Lazaro would notice. Augi concludes the conversation by saying they will get rid of the staff. But good news for Carlos, Alfonsina stays!

Renata's bedroom is "gender neutral", very funny.

Augie is going to be pithed when he finds out Jero is staying.

Rosemary

Cheryl- Great to see you back recapping and Stateside! Wonderful recap. I am trying to catch up to this novela too, and slowly getting there.

Carlos- I agree with your diagnosis of the little boy (Adriancito from Eva Luna). As soon as the mom got off the phone with the school and told Reg he had an uncontrolable nosebleed, I thought, uh oh! Another case of tn leukemia!

"Poor Agatha, I like her so far; too bad she's inconvenient." LOL! So true. So true.

Cheryl, I have thought for several years that only way to fix the problems in Mexico is for the people to have another Mexican Revolution.

Rosemary

Another minor detail. I may have misunderstood but I thought Roberta was telling her friend on the phone that she didn't want Jero to meet Renata yet. That's why she was hiding from Renata at the restaurant. Her friend reminded her that Jero would eventually meet at Matías' party. Roberta said that was OK as she would have Jero well hooked by then.

In other words I don't believe Roberta knows Jero has met Renata yet.

Audrey
Audrey

Vivi, Hey Lady, nice to hear from you. I too love the death by inconvenience of poor Agatha but Adriana has such a better fate in store Besides she hasn't aged as beautifully as Constanza so Constanza wins! HA.

Audrey, good catch, I think you are right that Roberta does not know about the airport scene since she and Renata aren't ever chatty or close.

Audrey Audrey (sorry I couldn't resist), I think you are correct. Roberta does not know that Jero and Renata have met. Man oh man she is going to be beside herself when she finds out. Serves her right.

Rosemary, Augie will be pithed. Well said!!

By the way, I grew up having a prettier sister. Sometimes it could be tiresome but never did I behave like Roberta. Well, nothing beyond the normal way that sisters in their adolescence stick it to each other that is. On the flip side, she once told me that she grew up always being jealous of me for whatever reason, probably because she is 2 yrs younger. We are best friends so I guess we survived the formative years.

Cheryl, "Besides she hasn't aged as beautifully as Constanza so Constanza wins! HA." Ouch!

One thing of note, when Renata was on the phone with Matias and he was singing the praises of Adriana, she told him she's glad. In fact, if he weren't her boyfriend, she would like him for Adriana. Foreshadowing much?

Sylvia, I am sure you are the most wonderful of big sisters for your compassionate nature alone not to speak of your intelligence and I think you are pretty too. So your little sister rightly admires you. And, yes, the quip about Constanza just seems to fit into the "survival of the prettiest" subtheme here, I couldn't help myself. HA!

Vivi, thanks for the clarification on this Adriana/Renata confusion. I need to go back and review last weeks episodes to find out how the name Adriana got in Jero's head and therefore now in Roberta's. But, you are so right on that Roberta is going to explode when she finds out who Jero is really infatuated with.

Cheryl, thanks for the great recap.

I continue to love this TN, but one thing that is driving me nuts is the lighting. Maybe someone has commented on this already. The Monterrubio home and empresas are like being in a cave. I keep wanting someone to turn the lights one. WTF?

The lighting in Eva Luna was just the opposite. The lighting of any TN or movie creates a mood, and the mood created by the dark lighting in this TN is very depressing. Hence, I love the outdoor scenes.

OT about la Pola. I missed the first 3 episodes. Last night I got the impression from a conversation between la Pola and her sister that laP and Alejo have already had sex. Isn't she about 14? Yikes! I hope that I'm misinterpreting what was said.

Carlos

VIvi good catch on the young boy being the same boy from Eva. I didn't even catch that. I went back to look and sure enough it was him. Seemed a lot younger though.

Pata- CME was filmed before Eva Luna, so it makes sense that he looks younger. I don't think he has braces yet either.

Cheryl - when Jero was semi-harassing Renata in the bar La Mentirosa (they were each waiting for their separate appointments with Rafael, and both were stood up, obviously), Jero introduced himself to Renata. I think he asked her name. She told him Adriana, because she really didn't want to have anything to do with Jero at the moment. She was still angry over the false accusation of her having stolen Jero's wallet when he had in fact left it in the taxi.

Audrey

I have actually been enjoying the lighting. They been doing that chiaroscuro thing at times - dramatic side lighting of people. And I also have enjoyed how distant wall lights or a lit up background, help create a sense of depth in the room. I think it's making the indoor sets look so much more interesting. I guess I haven't picked it up as being gloomy. Watching it in HD everything is so sharp (but not overly sharpened) it just seems so realistic - kind of 3D.

Audrey

Cheryl, what a sweet thing for you to say! Gracias amiga. I am a very good sister now, but growing up I'm pretty sure I gave my little sis her fair share of torture. We older sisters earn our reputation I fear, LOL.

One thing that I like about CME is when they do their split screen thingies. I know it's kind of cheesy but I really like it, not sure why. I wish I knew what that effect is called. Any TV Production people out there?

Vivi, the Adriana/Mati foreshadowing, more like cramming it down our throats. OK already, we get it and we're all on board with Adriana and Matias.

Audrey, good point about Jero not knowing Renata's real name, so he thinks there is only one R girl. However Regina tried to tell him there is another one and Roberta actually mentioned her sister Renata by name which he totally missed so Jero's obsession with Roberta is already blinding him to other obvious things.

Yep - several people have told or tried to tell Jero about there being two R daughters, but he doesn't listen when he's got his mind fixed on one idea.

I think the multiple video thing is quite well done in this novela. Not cheesy at all IMO. It's way nicer then the old-fashioned half screen or quarter screen. I think it adds a LOT when people are talking on the phone, and having the speaker video come forward. My husband was complimenting the show on how nicely they were doing multiple video work. The mandalas in the background screen crack me up though - LOL!

Audrey

Carlos--
OT on La Pola: I haven't watched last night's episode yet (recorded), so I can't answer for sure, but in the earlier episodes all that happened was a kiss from Pola to Alejo, then one from Alejo to Pola.

Apparently in those days, according to Alejo, a kiss is a major Pecado unless you were married--this coming from a "well-brought" up (i.e.repressed upbringing) lad of 14.
Newbie One

P.S. Can't wait for last night's Cuando. It's hard to keep up with two tns at the same hour and only an antiquated DVD. I'd love to see the REAL meeting between Renata and Jero. Are sparks going to fly or the fire of vengeance transferred to our poor R-2.

P.P.S. Carlos--Those kisses were on the lips.
