El Mundo de Telemundo, week of May 16, 2011: Discuss Amongst Yourselves
Urban Anthropologist has kindly been filling us in on the final days of Aurora in which our eponymous heroine lives on as the beating heart in a new protagonista. ¡Guau!
No one seems very excited about Los Herederos del Monte as it plods to its conclusion, proving perhaps that it takes more than All the Pretty Horses and All the Pretty Boys to make a successful novela.
La Pola, the historical novela from Colombia currently being aired on Univisión’s sister station, TeleFutura, has been given a tentative welcome to this page. Nobody wants an Invasion of the Pola Monster but we are open to brief comments and questions about this fabulous new show (as long as we remain a Logorrhea Free Zone).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the past few months, most of our conversation here has been about La Reina del Sur. As of Friday –
There are storm clouds gathering over Transer Naga. Teresa has many enemies but it’s a couple of insiders – both brought in at Patty’s invitation -- who seem poised to destroy her.
First there’s Teo. It is only after the suicide of his wife and would-be killer, Eugenia, that Teresa allows herself to think that what she and Teo share may be love. She seems touched when he surprises her with a yacht (that he bought with her money – what a prince!). [The yacht bears the name “El Bandido” but the script refers to it as “El Sinaloa”, as in the book.] For the first time, she invites him to her house. And she gives him a gift -- an untraceable gun for his own protection. Teo looks as if he expects her to take it out of the case and use it on him at that moment.
After Teo leaves, we are treated to a cheesy telenovela cliché -- not all that common in this show -- when Teresa falls in a dead faint. At a doctor's office the following morning, she learns she is pregnant with Teo’s child. [My favorite moment: the doctor congratulating Pote, whom he assumes to be the father.]
Then there’s Lupe/Veronica, Willy Rangel’s secret weapon in “Operation Sappho”. Lupe seduces Patty by exploiting her unrequited love for Teresa and posing as “Teresa Two”, the other Mexicana. L/V has several narrow escapes but she talks her way out of danger by exploiting Patty’s feelings for her. Patty can’t think beyond sexual betrayal so it never occurs to her to share her suspicions with anyone else at Transer Naga. And Patty reacts to this perceived betrayal by sinking into a profound depression. (Ya no queda ni la sombra de la hermosa Patty O’Farrell.)
Teresa herself is spending more time thinking about Sinaloa and el Güero and asking Pote questions that until now she has perhaps been afraid to speak aloud. On Friday, Pote confirms that it was el Gato who killed Brenda and Chino’s children – her godchildren -- on Batman’s orders.
The repulsive Cucho Malaspina finally impales Teresa – and Teo – on his telefoto lens, makes a small fortune publishing the photos and then goes on television to talk about the private life of “La Reina del Sur”.
L/V delivers documents to Flores and Willy that show the surprisingly vast financial network of Transer Naga and the names of the rich and famous people, the politicos, the philanthropists, the show biz types, the artists, who are involved in some way in the business. This is sensitive info but not enough to put Teresa et al in jail.
But the info L/V steals from Teo’s computer gives the police something they can use – evidence that Teo has been robbing Teresa blind! Now they can pressure Teo into giving them what they need to put Teresa out of business.
The police confront Teo with what they have discovered. If he informs on Teresa, they will shield him from her vengeance, he’ll keep everything he stole, and get nothing more than a judicial slap on the wrist for his own involvement. If not… Teo doesn’t even bother to feign conflicted feelings. Willy and Flores have themselves a rat.
Ironically, L/V is filled with guilt and self-reproach for betraying Patty. It may be that her words to Patty were all lies but their emotional content was not.
There is a delivery en route – 20 tons of cocaine – and between them, L/V and Teo give the cops enough details for them to set up a plan to intercept the carrier and arrest Teresa.
Willy recognizes that L/V is vulnerable and moves to get her out of Spain quickly. “Operation Sappho” is over and L/V is to fly to Mexico in the morning.
Juarez, while doing routine surveillance, catches sight of Teo coming out of the police building; his informant tells him Teo was in the Anti-Drug area. [The informant also tells him a man and woman, both with Latin American accents, are working with Flores.] Juarez reports Teo’s police visit to Oleg . Teo, when confronted by Oleg, claims that he was just following Teresa’s orders – to threaten Flores and explain away the documents. Then he tries to get Oleg off-balance by accusing him of being jealous – to which accusation our phlegmatic and enigmatic friend replies: A lo mejor sí, a lo mejor no. Soy ruso. Con nosotros, nunca se sabe. (Maybe I am, maybe I’m not – I'm Russian. With us, you never know.)
Both Oleg and Juarez are uneasy about the 20 ton shipment after hearing about Teo’s visit to the drug cops but there’s no way to shut it down – the Aurelia Carmona is already on her way. All they can do is be extra vigilant.
Patty, who has morphed into a zombie version of herself, breaks into L/V’s place by climbing through a window. Her frantic search of the flat is interrupted when L/V herself returns. Patty hides in the wardrobe and overhears one side of a phone conversation – L/V’s job is done and she’s packing to go back to Mexico in the morning.
Teresa calls Teo and asks him to come to the office. She has something she needs to tell him personally -- clearly, she wants to tell him she’s pregnant. But before she can begin, he goes on the defensive and blurts out the same lying explanation for his visit to the police station: he was only doing what she asked him to do.
So. We all know that the Golden Age of Transer Naga – and with it, our all-time favorite novela -- is coming to an end. What we don’t know is who will survive to tell the tale. And we don’t know how the Mexican side of the story will play out.
Your turn.

Thinking again about the doctor mistaking Pote for Teresa's partner -- it was a natural mistake to make. Pote has, in fact, become Teresa's pareja -- her soulmate, her confidante, her protector, her best friend. She is more and more estranged from Patty; she cares for, maybe even loves Oleg but they don't see that much of each other. But Pote is Teresa's shadow and we've seen them growing emotionally closer in the past few episodes. For Teresa, Pote is Sinaloa.
I love your recaps, NovelaMaven, even these briefer recapettes. Thanks so much.
I hated Cucho Malaspina's success, but I loved your image of him impaling Teresa and Teo on his telephoto lens.
I'm glad to see that I hadn't mistaken what Teresa said about the name of the yacht--El Sinaloa. When I saw that the name written on the yacht was El Bandido, I was quite perplexed. I guess the egoistical Teo decided to name it after himself.
Did Teresa become pregnant in the novel? I don't remember any such occurrence, but that doesn't prove much. With only ten episodes to go, I'm not sure what the writers are planning for her pregnancy.
Hola, Juanita! Muchas gracias!
"When I saw that the name written on the yacht was El Bandido, I was quite perplexed. I guess the egoistical Teo decided to name it after himself." Good one!
As for Teresa's pregnancy -- yes, she was pregnant in the novel, chapter 14, quite close to the end of the story. And Teo was the father.
I also loved the recap. :)
The yacht says both Sinaloa and Bandido, but the writing is smaller for Sinaloa.
The Pote scenes were great as usual. The actor just has some great comic ability. The fainting stuff was way overdone and silly, I thought, which is rare for this novela.
Juarez has been a pretty useful member of the team. I've grown to really appreciate his contributions and I enjoy his conversations with Oleg.
The Patty scenes were very hard for me to watch. She's just so hopeless and alone on her path of self-destruction. She was right, there really is nothing left of the Patricia O'Farrell everyone knew. I miss the prison Patty! By the way, Telemundo sure doesn't care about not spoiling the show. They ran a preview that tells us exactly what happens to Patty.
Speaking of previews, I groaned when I saw that the writers went to that predictable place with Epifaneo.
-S
Thanks, S! And thanks too for clearing up the mystery of the Sinaloa. I'll have to look more carefully at the yacht next time.
I think Cristina Urgel is doing an amazing job as Patty -- I am in awe of the way she uses her body, how she folds herself up into her despair and stretches and struts in her moments of arrogance. But yes, her Patty is tragic now and I agree, she can be hard to watch.
Thanks for the great summary, NovelaMaven. I think that gun that Teresa gave Teo will come into play at some key point.
As for the previews, I totally agree that Telemundo shouldn't show us these things, although sometimes, it's someone's dream.
I was glad that at least someone on Teresa's side is finding out something (Juarez). And I still have hope that Alberto will find out something. But will there be time for Teresa to react?
Thanks, NovelaMaven, for reminding me about Teresa's pregnancy. I took another look at chapter 14--and at 15 (once I started re-reading, it was hard to stop). Ch. 15 reminded me that Willy had been in the novel (I hadn't remembered that, either), but he didn't enter it until ch. 15. Quite different from his role in the TN.
Like -S and Hombre, I too was bothered by the previews. And, like -S, I groaned when the previews seemed to bear out what the TN's clichéd words had signaled about Epifanio a while ago. As for Patty, either the previews are misleading or the TN has departed from the novel. Either is possible.
NovelaMaven, I remain in awe of your writing skills. Excellent description of what happened Friday and where we are now.
Yes, Cristina Urgel is fabulous as Patty. We've seen so many aspects of her so far: Lighthearted involvement with a Eurotrash boyfriend that ended up with her being shot; mustering up the guts to become La Teniente in prison, taking no crap from any inmates; partner with Teresa in Transer Naga, and now a sad descent into addiction.
That Teo is completely despicable. He's making love to Teresa in her special place - her first home, getting her to believe their relationshipwill progress.
I noted a big difference between the attitudes of Willy and Veronica and that of Flores. Flores apparently lacks a sense of irony and congratulates Teo on a job well done. Meanwhile, Veronica and Willy treat him like something they'd like to scrape off the bottom of their shoes. Teo the scumbag wants "guarantees" about keeping the drug money he stole from Teresa.
Veronica tells Willy after Teo leaves: este tipo es una rata; estoy segura que está tratando de culpar a Patty si falla la operación.
Apparently Juárez has a spy in the anti-drug cop shop - the guy who got into the car with him.
After getting picked up by Dima, Teo makes up a pretty good lie about having promised Teresa he'd go threaten Flores with a harassment lawsuit.
But he over-egged the pudding during his phone conversation with Teresa. She definitely picked up on the desperation and lack of desire to come to see her right away.
Hombre, thanks! I find the Telemundo promos annoying too but I suppose they bring in viewers -- or at least that's what their marketing people must be saying. Anyway, I try not to pay too much attention to them. As Juanita says, they are often misleading. (Still, they were much more problematic in "Alguien" where suspense was everything.)
Novelera, you are too kind. I've said before that your opinion means a lot to me. Thank you.
I like your point about the difference between Flores and Willy and Veronica. Actually Flores does something I thought was impossible -- he makes Willy look good:
"Flores apparently lacks a sense of irony and congratulates Teo on a job well done. Meanwhile, Veronica and Willy treat him like something they'd like to scrape off the bottom of their shoes."
Perfect!
Where everybody gets busy satisfying appetites and some get their just desserts.
Countdown to finale: 5
What an episode for Friday the 13th!
Lorenzo and Angela argue about why she came back and his massive confusion about his feelings. He had been all ready to love her for herself but he lost it when she told him about having Aurora's heart.
Martin loses it, saying he will kill Ernesto. Vickie gets him to calm down to finish celebrating his birthday. She asks if he still wants to have a baby with her and they get busy. They talk about having two children and a house full of happiness.
Federico and Vanessa talk about their divorce over cocktails. She asks about his girlfriend and he hesitates to answer. Catalina comes into the room and she asks “Do you want to celebrate our divorce so Federico can marry his charming girlfriend?” Catalina's eyebrows go up a little and she says she has a lot on her mind. She leaves the room and Vanessa asks Federico if he'd like a hot send-off; she's wearing some sexy lingerie. WTF? But this is like her. They get busy.
Lorenzo has lunch with Gabriel asking how Angela was with her husband. He says “you can't imagine how he made her suffer.” Angela comes in with the partner termination agreement: She sells her share to him and he can pay when he is able to.
Martin visits Satanas in the prison. Satanas tells him that his father was his friend until he betrayed him. Further, that Ernesto makes more friends every day, he is one of them, and Lorenzo is his enemy. Finally when he says “How is he? Still crying for his frozen bitch?” Martin loses it and starts to choke him. Guards pull them apart.
Vickie visits Angela to express her concerns about the situation; Angela tells her they will need a new security tactic. The prison calls her to tell her that Martin is in the infirmary because of a fight.
Federico takes his leave of a lingerie-clad Vanessa, eyeing her with some suspicion. After he leaves she looks at the video recorded by her cell phone and takes on an expression that says she's gonna mess with somebody.
Natalia tries to knock some sense into Lorenzo's head about Angela.
Cesar reports for work and is chewed out. When he says he has a family problem he is told that such things don't exist for work; here there are only cars and drivers. They go to look at the car Cesar will be driving that day.
Vickie is tending the wound near Martin's hairline and he says something about how they have to be together at all times until the Ernesto crap is over. She reminds him that this isn't possible because they have to work, etc. He asks “Why not? At least until this is over.” Then he tells he he's taking a bath; she says she'll make dinner and that she wants to make a paradise for him.
In Ernesto's cell:
E: I knew you'd come someday. I miss you. Do you appreciate that I care for you?
V: I hate being near you. I hate you. Elizabeth was going to give me back the face you stole from me. You ruined everything, you know? You also hate me; you don't love me. You can't know how much pain you caused.
E; Don't talk to me about my love, Vickie.
V: Very well, then we'll talk about my hate. I'm telling you your plan didn't work. You didn't ruin my life. Martin hasn't left me and he won't.
E; OK, fine. Then he will have to die.
V (apprehensive): What are you saying?
E (with a little irritation): This, this. I wrote the ending. I intend to share it with you now. Sometime in a moment when you're distracted, if it can't be me someone will do it for me.
V: Ernesto, you promised me you wouldn't...
E (getting up from the table): If you're not with him I will keep my promise. But if you stay with him, today, tomorrow, the day after.... Someone will call you and you will get the sad news that you are a widow. Do you remember the note about the 5 bullets? One for the other arm, two for the legs, one in the stomach – boom! – and the last in the heart.
V (scared): Very well. Give me a day to say goodbye and leave for good.
E: Is it a deal? (he extends his hand). One day.
V (extending her hand reluctantly): It's a deal.
Angela goes to see Lorenzo and happens to arrive when he's cooking. They briefly discuss business, Lorenzo invites her to stay for dinner. She agrees, but looks confused.
Vickie comes home to Martin telling that he didn't see her at the prison.
M: Did you see him?
V: Yes. I feel better now. We made a deal.
M: A deal? With that sicko? What kind of a deal?
V: He'll leave us alone.
M: In exchange for what?
V: In exchange for me never having an operation. To have this mark until I die. That's why the operation was interrupted. The only thing he wants is for me to have this mark forever.
M: I don't know, Vickie. That sounds strange.
V: No, mi amor. I see the concern in your eyes. Ernesto will not bother us again. We're free to live our love.
They embrace. Vickie looks a little concerned because she just told a whopper; Martin doesn't look like he swallowed it. (No, this wasn't a Burger King placement).
Vanessa lays on her duvet with a sleep mask and her iPod on. Federico marches in and strips them off her. She asks what's wrong; is he nuts? He responds”The crazy one is you. Drop that facial expression because you know exactly why I'm here.”
They argue about the fact that Vanessa sent the sex video to Federico's girlfriend. She asked “Did she like it?” They argue about Vanessa marrying him to make Cesar jealous. He was never anything important in her life and that hurt because he loved her. She tells him she never had sex with Cesar since they were married; Federico didn't believe that. He finally said “Now I know exactly what kind of woman you are” before walking out.
Meanwhile at the race track, Sr. Fuentes tells Cesar to bring back the car, but he keeps driving despite the risk that's yelled at him.
Vickie tells Martin she wants them to live differently, as though Ernesto didn't exist and they were completely alone. He gets a little suspicious so when she gets up he calls Gustavo to request a leave of absence from the clinic.
Cesar brings the car back in and gets fired.
Lorenzo introduces Angela to the new wine he just got in for the restaurant. She takes a sip and comments positively noting that she can't have much because of all the medications she takes. She clearly enjoys the food he just prepared. He talks about starting over. (Huh?)
After the commercial break they move on to dessert, which looks like a mousse au chocolat, something the Urban Anthropologist loves. They flirt over this.
Cesar and Sr. Fuentes talk and Sr Fuentes reads him the riot act, telling him that ruining the car creates work and that he will need to learn a little humility. He's not fired, but he has to learn who's boss.
Finally, after one last hesitation, Lorenzo and Angela get busy. And decide to have a relationship beyond business. Lorenzo tears up the dissolution papers.
Martin and Vickie bathe by candlelight and he asks her if she would like to get away from it all. She asks whether that wouldn't be hard because of his work and he explains that he spoke to Gustavo about it. He wants to take her far away for a while. She tells him she lied about the promise to Ernesto and tells him the truth, adding that she would die if anything happened to him.
After the long commercial break, Martin and Vickie tell Vanessa and Catalina that they're going to go away for a long time to be away from the death threats. Catalina thinks this is a good idea and promises to “take care of things here”. Vanessa says she'll miss them but she'll feel better about their being safe. Gustavo calls Martin to let him know that all the arrangements have been made. Catalina's phone rings and we hear a male voice talking about Ernesto's killer being ready.
Ernesto is strangled in his cell by a prison guard.
Vanessa has her thong in a bunch about a movie offer she turns down. She tells the caller she's a novela actress and isn't interested in doing those kinds of movies. We don't hear the caller's voice, but she then asks “The video?” She doesn't like the answer. Catalina comes into the room and asks what's wrong. The video that Vanessa sent to Federico's now ex-novia has come back to bite Vanessa on her surgically enhanced butt: It's been put on the internet and has gotten a half million views in three hours! Catalina laughs ironically and comments about looking on the bright side: Federico loses the girlfriend and Vanessa could have a whole new career. However, now is the time to rejoice because someone is killing Ernesto.
Satanas comes back to the cell and finds Ernesto dead.
Comments
This novela went into the interesting area of moral relativism: Catalina and Federico started out as straight-up villains who are now doing bad to do good, while Vanessa had never gone completely over to the dark side. Perhaps part of the “controversy” is that they won't be punished for their sins.
Having said that, there are still some unresolved situations. Vanessa's first husband is still on ice, we still don't know whether Blanca and Cesar will remarry or whether Ines and Roque will marry. Gustavo and Natalia haven't walked down the aisle yet and we should anticipate that Lorenzo and Angela will take things slowly for a while. Cesar still has to find out that his boss is his biological father.
Lots of things need to happen this week but we still could have a tragic ending.
Thank you so much UA!
Love your summaries and comments!
You are really catching all of the details in what can be a very complicated story.
I'd also like to thank you for your efforts, Urban A, in recapping the final part of this novela.
I only watched the first two weeks, but I'm sure there are people watching Aurora who don't comment and who appreciate your excellent recaps of Aurora.
You're welcome. I rarely give up on a novela once I've watched about 6 weeks of it and I almost bailed on this one. With only this week left I want to see what they call "controversial."
Revelations
Revelation 1: Teo is even worse than we thought. Now it turns out that besides stealing from Teresa and betraying her with the cops, he has a lover! Juarez sees him meet up with the beauty (and later, Juarez tells Oleg). Teo is giving us a dictionary definition of the Spanish word "cinico", which doesn't seem to mean cynical the way we use it, but is more like two-faced combined with brazen, especially when he tells Teresa he wants her to be Mama to his girls.
Meanwhile, Teresa, having told only Pote about her pregnancy, is getting advice about children from just about everyone. Conejo thinks it's okay not to have kids, she doesn't, though her sister has seven. But her sister had a migraine followed by no appetite each time she was pregnant, just as Teresa does now. Are you pregnant, Teresa? No, course not. Same thing with Oleg, he senses she's pregnant, she denies. Oleg also gives her a priceless Faberge egg which has been in his family for generations.
Revelation 2: Ratas, upset that he's not allowed out of the house (because Don Epi thinks he'll kill the other candidate), finds out that Don Epi is actually his father. Also, Don Epi has a low opinion of Ratas. This doesn't look good.
Revelation 3: Patty follows Veronica/Lupe, thinks she and her lover are having an afternoon delight in a hotel (it's actually just a picnic lunch, Mexican style), and when they go back to Lupe's for her to pack, Patty gets a really good look at Willy, the wheels start spinning (slowly), and she realizes that Willy is a cop. And therefore....so is Lupe! Willy calls her Veronica, and Patty starts to go ballistic.
And what a time for that, as the customs people seized the cocaine, Teresa has to pay $50 million to the Russians for the lost cargo, Teresa realizes someone inside must have leaked info, and Teo blames Patty!!!!!
Terrific summary, Hombre! Yes, Teo is really a piece of work. Probably the thing that got to me most was his talking to Teresa about being the mother of his kids right after he had had hot sex with someone else. A close runner-up to this is his telling Teresa that if police/guardia civil/whatever were tipped off about the drug shipment by someone in Transer Naga, it clearly had to be Patty.
Speaking of Patty, Cristina Urgel had some amazing scenes in this episode, especially the dawning realization through the haze of drugs that she'd been duped by Lupe, and that she didn't even know Lupe's real name. I found the confrontation scene heartbreaking.
One thing that puzzled me is that Lupe leaves her apartment without even noticing that Patty's car is parked right in front of the building. Duh?
And though I have nothing much to add about it, I have to say that I loved the scene between Teresa and Oleg.
Juanita, Lupe/Veronica told Willy that Patty's car was outside. I think Patty supposedly left it there from the last time she was there, and took a cab when they broke up, or something like that. She didn't realize that Patty had left and come back (not sure of the chronology here).
Muchas gracias, Hombre, for clearing up that mystery.
BTW, my capcha word to post this message is logyn--I wonder whether I get a special fancy screen :-).
Last night was really quite an episode. The Patti part was heartbreaking. Also that even Teresa isn't supporting her is sad. Until recently I didn't understand why everyone was against Teo. Well his real character has finally come out. What a creep!!!
Once again, I loved the interaction between Oleg and Teresa. His giving her the Faberge EGG was a bit symbolic. He also understood that Teresa was either pregnant or wanted to be with Teo. The fact that she has denied it to him and Conejo (she almost never actually lies) makes me feel she might abort it. She certainly is picking up Teo's strange vibes, which is probably why she hasn't told him.
Also, the scene when she tells Oleg about her childhood was really moving. Again terrific acting on both of their parts. I didn't quite understand what she said about their getting together if they had met at a different time, or place?? Or something like that.
One question --hombre in your excellent comments, you said Teresa is going to give the 50 million to the Russian mafia. I undestood that she was going to give it to the Colombian, or was is just that she called him to let him know what happened with the shipment?
RE the police reaction to Teo:I wrote in a posting that never appeared last week that I thought the way Flores related to Teo was interesting. He has always been respectful, even when Eugenia commited suicide. That must be the class thing.
I have no idea how this will end. I wish Oleg and Teresa could wind up together and live happily ever after in some safe and warm/sur place. but I know this would never happen. As for Patti, I see no hope for her, which is too bad as I have come to like her. It is sad to see her lose her spirit.
NJ Sue, you're right, they have to pay the Colombians. It's the Russians who didn't get their merchandise.
As for what Teresa said to Oleg, it was something like, "We met too late". He then said "If it had to be late like that, our feelings for each other will be strong enough to last 1000 lifetimes." This isn't exact, maybe someone else can provide the Spanish.
Hombre, thanks so much for the terrific summary. Very perceptive comments, Juanita and NJ Sue. I was knocked out by the ensemble acting last night, but especially by Cristina Urgel's Patty.
P.S. NJ Sue -- have you been working on your Italian lately? :)
OK, it's now official. I hate Teo as much as Gato and Ratas. At least they were up front about their desire to do her in.
I agree, Juanita, telling Teresa he wants her to be the kids mama is beyond disgusting. Did you all notice that Teresa commented on how nice he smelled, and he quickly came up with some excuse about a shower in the middle of the day. Clearly, he had lots of practice with these excuses during his marriage to Eugenia. Also, there was something nervous about Teo when he met with Teresa that aroused her "spidey sense", although she kept trying to dismiss it.
I agree, the scene with Patty finding out about "Lupe" was heart wrenching. The Patty in the TN is a much more sympathetic character than the one in the book.
Oleg said that he'd have to help Teresa control her dos alas rotas; i.e., Don Juan de Aljarafe y la demente de Patty.
Teo looked like he was sweating bullets when Ramos told how the agents went directly to the drugs without using lasers, x-rays or anything. Teo also freaked out a bit about the $50 million Teresa plans to repay Sanchez-Godoy. There probably isn't enough left after his luxury digs in Miami and New York. And, just as Lupe predicted, he puts the blame on Patty.
The conversation with Oleg and Teresa was terrific! I loved his descriptions of life growing up in the Soviet Union: mucho sacrificio, pocas libertades y mucho socialismo y pocas patatas
My impression of what Teresa meant about her relationship with Oleg was that they met at the wrong time for a carnal relationship. I interpret this as her not having recovered from Santiago's death when their friendship began. He said that they meant more to each other than mil amores. This is very, very true. A deep and close friendship, whether with someone of the same or opposite sex, can outlast lots and lots of love affairs.
Novelera, thanks for the correction about Oleg. My notes do say "1000 loves", but I misread them and put 1000 lives:)
It was also sad to hear Teresa talk about her mother being a prostitute, and that she initially was going down the same path.
We know Teresa is good with numbers. Although Teo has successfully snowed Teresa about his "investments" so far, it's only a matter of time before he slips up. (He's already started, with the amante).
Countdown to finale: 4
In which Death makes a few bad decisions, delusions reign supreme, and anything can be other than it seems
Diana enters Lorenzo's restaurant and sends a text to Vickie's phone that says he (Ernesto) knows wherever they go and they will be followed. Martin will lose his Sleeping Beauty.
Felix enters the restaurant and finds Lorenzo and Angela together. He tells them that a client has informed him of an orphaned infant that needs parents because of multiple health issues.
Diana meets with her private eye and tells him that she doesn't care if she has to deplete all her funds, she wants them followed. There should be no corner of the world they can hide in.
Ernesto didn't die. In the prison infirmary he tells Satanas that Martin tried to kill him. The police arrive at Martin and Vickie's place and arrest him for attempted murder. After they mirandize him he tells Vickie to contact Angela to have her come over and to not be alone.
Angela sends Gabriel to Vickie and he brings two bodyguards.
Somehow Ernesto has a cell phone (how was that possible?) and he sends a similar text message to Vickie. She is to leave Martin or Ernesto will kill him. “And you'd rather be dead than see him die. Really?” Just as she's starting to shake with fear he phones her, now from his cell.
E: I'm only calling to tell you you betrayed me. You were going to Europe because I ordered you killed. It's not going to be like that. The only thing I want to hear is that you are leaving Martin.
V: No, no; he's leaving alone and I will disappear after that. We'll be far apart after that like you wanted.
E; What do you take me for? Do you think I'll believe that (XXX) thing? You'll try to escape from me but you can't. If you leave with him I will kill him.
V: No, no. I know you're capable of anything, Ernesto, but you're not a killer.
E: You are mistaken. Many years ago I killed someone very like Martin, of the same blood. Kill the father, kill the son.
V: What are you saying?
E: I killed Sebastian Lobos, Martin's real father. And destiny tells me that I will also kill the son.
Blanca visits Elisabeth in the women's prison to tell her that she was investigating Diego Fuentes. She shows photos to Elisabeth, who confirms that this is Cesar's father.
To the tune of this series' Satanic-sounding chorus, Vickie paces around in her apartment thinking about the last conversation she and Martin had about Ernesto. Finally she turns on all the gas jets and writes a suicide note:
I, Victoria Hutton, leave this note to admit that I ordered the killing of Ernesto Podesta. Martin Lobos is innocent. I planned this alone without Martin's knowledge. I had to end the hell we were living in. Martin must be given his freedom. This will leave everyone in peace.
Martin, I'm sorry, but your freedom and your life are the most important things to me. I hope someday you will be happy. Lamentably, our love only brought us misfortune (desgracias). To the last moment I never stopped loving you. Yours into eternity, Vickie.
She folds the note.
Martin is on the way home in a cab. He's smiling as he reviews the bouquet of flowers, box of chocolates, and something else he's obviously bought for Vickie. Satanic-sounding chorus starts again as we see Vickie lying unconscious on the floor.
The cab stops, Martin pays the driver and almost runs out to enter the building (Why is the gate open and no bodyguards there?). He sees Vickie, drops everything, and turns off the gas jets.
Martin puts Vickie in the back seat of his car and looked at the suicide note as he gets into the driver's seat.
Lorenzo and Angela, same issues about their unwanted attraction and the llamada de corazón vis a vis Angela and baby Aurora. Neither believed in this stuff before. Yadda, yadda, yadda.
Martin brings Vickie into the clinic, Vanessa gets a call about and nearly gets hysterical. After ending the call she tells her mother and Federico that Vickie tried to kill herself and it's a miracle she's alive. And it's all Ernesto's fault. She wants to kill him with her bare hands. Federico restrains her and tries to calm her down while Catalina looks like she's asking herself what went wrong.
Cesar is racing against his father.
Diana visits Ernesto in prison. She's wearing a strapless yellow dress. She can wear yellow like nobody I've ever known.
E: Are you telling me she wanted to commit suicide?
D: That's what the detective told me. They haven't left because of this.
E: How is she now?
D: They got her to a clinic and the only thing he knows is that she survived.
E: I want her far away from Martin, but I don't want her dead.
D: How did you expect to do that?
E: I told her that if she didn't leave Martin, I would kill him.
D: Don't count on me. I want Martin alive and if you try to kill him forget about me helping you get this woman. (gets up to leave)
E (grabbing her forearm): You better help me or I will name you as my accomplice.
I didn't get the conversation between Cesar and Diego after the race but their discovery can't be far off.
Angela is singing a children's song to Aurorita using a plush cat as a puppet; Aurorita is happy and Lucero approves. Lorenzo watches from the doorway to the next room.
Martin is at Vickie's bedside. When she finally wakes she tells him what happened and that Ernesto told her he killed Sebastian.
Furthermore, that he did it for pleasure.
Martin intends for Vickie to rest and not have to think about this garbage. “You don't know how much I love you and I would die if you died.”
Vanessa charges in without knocking; Dr Williams is behind her looking like he wanted to stop her. She ignores the men and gets mother hen on Vickie. Martin tells her that Vickie needs peace and quiet. Vanessa tells him he can't understand because he doesn't have children.
Va: I am her mother. You're talking to me about love? Really? Do you really think your “love” can compare with the (---) like mine?
M: This isn't about who loves her more; it's about Vickie needing rest.
Vi: The only person who bothers her is you. Look at her; look at her face, her mental state. She used to be full of life. You want to kill her! You have been hurting her; your love has brought her hurt.
Vi: Mother, stop it now! Martin's love is the most best thing in my life. If you can't respect that, I'm asking you to leave.
Va: Have you been listening to me, Vickie?
Dr W: Vickie needs rest now so she can recover.
Vanessa exits in a huff with Dr W behind her. Martin tells Vickie that love is the most important thing in life.
Cesar talks to Martin on the phone; he must have been describing the arrest. Diego chews him out, telling him to keep his problems out of work. Cesar tells him it was his brother with a serious matter. Sergio asks whether everything is OK and Diego tells him “No, nothing has happened here.” He continues to rip Cesar for not keeping his problems out of the office. Sergio asks “Isn't it bad enough you treat me like that?” Cesar mans up and tells Diego that he's right. “I'm alive thanks to my brother. My brother risked his life for me. If he's having a problem I'm going to be there for him. I prefer that to having a heart of stone like you. I quit.” As he exits Sergio looks at his father and shakes his head.
Martin goes to Gustavo's office and apologises for having accused him of Sebastian's murder. He tells him that Ernesto said he did it. He's not sure whether this is true or whether Ernesto is saying this to frighten him, but he's sure Gustavo didn't do it. He doesn't know what's going through Ernesto's head, but now he has to think about the future. Gustavo promises whatever help he needs.
Vanessa got back into Vickie's room. She apologises for what she said before and says that when Vickie has a child she'll understand. That despite her mistakes she loves Vickie above everything. She and Federico leave and Vickie shocks all of us by telling Catalina that she never thought her love for Martin would be his death sentence. She asks her to help her separate from him.
A shocked Catalina tells Vickie that she doesn't think she can walk away from Martin. Vickie tells her she was ready to suicide over it and she's ready to do whatever it takes. She's afraid of Martin being accused of murder again and Catalina admits that she was the one who tried to make that happen. The idiots bungled it, but next time they won't fail. Vickie begs her not to because Martin will be accused. Just please help me get away, she asks. Catalina tells her she will only so that neither of them will end up dead.
In the hospital cafeteria Martin explains what a close call it was to Lorenzo and Angela. He asks that they investigate Diana and Angela says they also have find out who is following them. She suggests that Vickie not return home with him when she's released. Obviously their security measures were inadequate. Lorenzo is shocked at the revelation about Ernesto being Sebastian's killer and the false claim that Gustavo was.
Martin informs Vickie that she is going home to her mother's tomorrow. It looks like he and Federico have a plan.
Blanca tells Cesar that she has to tell him something about his boss. “What boss? I quit. I don't ever want him in my life again.” Hmm... has he compared notes with Maria Desemparada?
“He is your natural father.”
Lorenzo and Gustavo talk about Sebastian's death. Gustavo knew him many years ago when they both gambled in underground casinos. Sebastian owed him a lot of money and he asked after it repeatedly. When he ended up dead Gustavo assumed that someone else to whom he owed money was responsible and he never gambled again. That was why he objected to Aurora's relationship with him and took her away. Lorenzo is furious, accusing him of writing the end to their love story.
Vickie tells Martin she's listed to his song. He tells her that she inspires him. Love talk. Williams enters with a file that has the test results. Vickie es embarazada!
Natalia hears the story. Gustavo admits it. When has asks him why he never told anyone, he admits he didn't have the courage. Lorenzo calls him a coward and orders him out of his home. He never wants to see him again and he doesn't want him to see Aurorita. Gustavo leaves without argument. Natalia tells Lorenzo he can't prevent him from seeing Aurorita because she is his blood.
Vickie and Martin talk about how this baby is a sign that they will always be together and that all children are miracles.
Comments
For all the bizarre turns this story has taken, there are a few logical conclusions we can draw about two of our villanas:
Elisabeth: Diego, her first lover, turned into a new edition of her overstrict, perfectionist father. As ludicrous as this sounds, it's very common to repeat history this way. Most who do this don't realize it until it's too late.
Vanessa: Like many women who don't find love or believe in it, she is looking to deny it to her daughter. She -- a famous actress -- loses both her husbands and lo and behold her mousy little daughter lands this hot doctor! Like most narcissists she wants to share the misery. This does not exclude the possibility that Vanessa doesn't like getting older and having a married daughter points in that direction.
As for Diana, she's in a folie a deux with Ernesto. Together their toxicity is exponentially increased because their obsessions are escalating.
Finally, since Catalina is a woman whom you don't mess with, I'm wondering whether she really ordered the murder of Ernesto or whether she has something else up her sleeve that we won't like. Diana doesn't seem to be backing off and we have no idea if Catalina is having her watched. The stalking may have escalated at her order for a motive similar to Vanessa's attempt at isolating Vickie from Martin.
Tons of action, tons of flashbacks, not much dialog should make this recap short. Patty faints. Flores calls Willy, they have to meet to strategize with the drug seizure (they still can't tie Teresa to the drugs). Willy leaves Veronica to watch over Patty. They have no authority to kidnap her, detain her, etc.
After he leaves, Patty wakes up, knocks down Veronica and takes the gun. Vero knocks her down, takes it back. Patty runs out to her car, jumps in, as does Vero. The car screams around corners as the two beautiful Sapphos yell at each other. Vero says "I had to pretend to fall in love with you for the mission, but I really DID fall in love with you!" Patty: Enough lies! Over the cliff goes the car. Both girls fly out, and if this were real, they'd both be dead. But one's alive. We'll find out who tonight.
Ramiro (Ratas) is gonna change, now that he knows he's Don Epi's son. He even puts on a suit. We'll see about this one.
Teo meets with Flores, who tells him Patty knows everything! Teo's upset, and even more so when, after Flores leaves, Juarez steps out, saying "so you're the mole". Teo, however, has that untraceable gun, and he shoots Juarez at point blank range. And apparently misses. Juarez misses him, too.
Teresa misses Mexico.
I'm definitely NOT going to miss tonight's show!
Excellent short description and comment jumping off point, Hombre.
At this point I'd like to see Teo turned over to Ratas in Culiacán for a little bridge action.
Don Epifanio listens to Ratas' filial declaration and tells him, between puffing on his cigar: no te creo ni el padre nuestro. I love these Mexicanismos. I don't even believe it if you said the Our Father prayer.
Hombre, I backed up that scene of the car going over the cliff several times and only saw Patty thrown from the convertible. I even said aloud to myself: "bye-bye, Lupita".
Not as smart as he thinks he is, Flores compromises Teo by insisting on meeting him in person.
Nino Juárez says: Sabía que el topo era el gilipollas de Aljarafe. Apparently topo (mouse) is used instead of what they use in Latin America: sapo o soplón for an informant.
Yes, indeedy, that quote by Chekhov regarding drama held true in last night's show: "If a gun is introduced in the first act of a play, it must be fired by the final act".
Novelera, I'm no language expert, but I thought a mouse was raton, and topo is a mole (including a guy inside an organization who's getting out info). I think topo means mouse in Italian, though, like Topo Gigio :)
Hombre, great snappy recap! Thanks!
And thank you to you and Novelera for the brief excursion into Romance linguistics. Apparently, the Latin "talpa" (mole, zoo.) shows up as "topo" (mouse) in Italian; "topo" (mole, zoo & mole, spy) in Spanish; and "taupe" (mole, zoo. and spy) in French.
I also saw only Patty being thrown from the car. But then I saw Verónica on the ground too. So we have to assume she was thrown clear of the car even if they didn't show that scene. (I hope I'm not confusing this with a preview. Si sí, pues lo siento.)
I LOVE the language lessons here. I studied Italian many years ago and, without looking it up, was thinking maybe the European Spanish speakers used topo for mouse also. Mole makes a lot more sense.
I love the language lessons too, Novelera -- many times they're more interesting than the particulars of the show (although not in this case!)
But looking at our conversation, I had to add: "taupe", of course, finds its way into English via French as the color word (brownish-gray, ie mole-colored).
BTW, Lupe/Veronica absolutely did fly out of the car - first. It was only about two seconds after it went over the edge, you see her green/blue shirt, flailing arms and you hear a scream. It's quick, but easy to see of my tv (big screen). Patty flies out a little later. But tonight we'll find out what happened next.
Countdown to finale: 3
In which some more chickens come home to roost while the roosters fight on
Blanca and Cesar argue about her revelation; he doesn't want to believe it. Furthermore, he doesn't want any more complications in their lives.
Angela tells Felix she doesn't love him and is in no condition to enter the arrangement he is thinking about (I thought they were divorced).
Despite her agreement with Martin about not telling anyone about her pregnancy, Vickie told Catalina. Furthermore, she told her that she won't leave Martin now. Martin enters with an old-fashioned ice cream sundae for her “better than anything we serve here.” (He's a keeper, Vickie!) Catalina takes her leave and exits.
Sergio arrives at Blanca and Cesar's with a suitcase. His father threw him out and he's asking if he can stay the night. Blanca consents before Cesar can answer.
Federico and Vanessa talk. She tells him she doesn't want a divorce. She loves him “en mi manera”. He walks anyway, telling her she only loves what she can't have.
Gustavo is sitting at his desk, a half-empty liquor bottle and a glass for company. Natalia comes in to ask when he's coming home. He asks whether she thinks he killed Sebastian; she tells him no but that he's made a lot of mistakes. She loves him and doesn't like seeing him like this.
Diana talks to the detective and a female who looks somewhat familiar. The male says they have important news and the female is apprehensive about continuing. Diana asks why as she is offering a lot of money and asks what the news is.
Martin and Vickie talk about their plans, which appear to include moving so Vickie won't have to deal with stairs.
Diana asks “How is it they're having a baby?” She is furious.
Vickie asks Martin how she will continue working and asks if he's still jealous now that she's pregnant.. He says “more, because now there are two.”
Diana tells the female that if she's afraid thanks and good riddance, giving her a white envelope (presumably containing her last payment). After she leaves, Diana tells the guy “Victoria Hutton must die.”
Martin looks as though he was eavesdropping on this despite being in Vickie's hospital room.
Dawn over New York City.
Martin and Catalina talk over a desk. He and Vickie are being followed. Both Catalina and Angela are having Diana followed and both sets of people know she visits Ernesto. A nurse at the clinic has leaked information to one of .Diana's people. Martin says that if Diana were taken out of circulation Ernesto couldn't do anything because only she has access to money. “We both know that money can buy people, “ he says. Catalina acknowledges this. Martin tells her to guard Vickie like gold and make sure that nobody gets into the building. Catalina tells him she knows what she's going to do.
Viewers must be wondering what that is.
Diana tells the detective that she is nervous about the decision she just made. He tells her that as long as Vickie is in the clinic, killing her will be impossible. Security even screens new patients. She says it will then have to be outside of the clinic. He tells her that Vickie is being released today. Diana says that even if she can't have Martin, neither will Vickie.
Angela tells Lorenzo that there is little evidence against Ernesto but a lot against Gustavo. Lorenzo talks about how Gustavo messed with their lives. He and Aurora could have been together raising Blanca, etc. He catches himself and says “I don't know why I'm telling you this.” Angela says “Why not?” She has always known she is living with a ghost and she can deal with it. She loves him and for the first time she's living in the present instead of worrying about the future.
Martin comes to Vickie's room to tell her she's being released. Catalina comes in behind him. There will be people guarding Vickie. Martin has refused bodyguards.
Lorenzo and Angela talk about their relationship and get busy on her desk.
Vickie realizes she isn't headed home and Catalina tells her she's taking her far away for her safety and that of the baby. Vickie borrows her cell phone to call Martin. She tearfully tells him that she's going away, she doesn't know where and this is the last call she can make to him. Martin freaks when he realizes she ended the call. Vanessa and Dr W are in his office with him. It doesn't look like Vanessa knew what Catalina was planning.
It turns out that she didn't know, but she and Martin are OK with this for the moment. They are hatching a plan. She tells him that she appreciates his love for Vickie and that she is very strong, and she's been very brave since the acid burn. “If it had been me I couldn't have gone on.” She exits and Martin makes a call to have her guarded.
The female who met with Diana is escorted into Martin's office; she is the nurse who leaked information. He begins interrogating her and she claims twice that she doesn't know what he's talking about. Dr W opens the door and several policemen enter. The stool pigeon begins to sing.
Vanessa goes down to the parking lot and gets into the detective's car. She lets him know she's onto him. He looks uncomfortable.
Diego shows up at Cesar and Blanca's place to retrieve Sergio, whose mother told him where to find him. Sergio reminds him that he told him to leave, but Diego claims he just lost his temper. Now let's go because we're wasting time. Blanca tells him he's the one wasting time coming there. He responds with a sarcastic rhetorical question and Cesar gets in his face saying “You don't talk that way to my wife.” He says something about not knowing why Sergio came there because he has no friends. Sergio tells him that Cesar is a friend only to hear that he has no concept of friendship and he is immature. He has too much to learn and should come home, although “your mother doesn't understand.”
Is Diego Vanessa's brother, separated at birth?
Sergio responds that with a father like him he wishes he were adopted like Cesar. Diego says they are both stubborn kids who think they know everything when they know nothing about life. They have a lot to learn (gee, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?) . “We'll see about that” is Cesar's response. I didn't get Diego's next question but Cesar said (sarcastically) “Because I have such good genes.”
Vanessa leads the cheap detective into her apartment, makes him a drink, and says something about how her daughter will be out for a while. She sits on the bed and does a Sharon Stone. He looks at her and says something about her enjoyment of life. He hesitates because she's married. She explains that the divorce will be going through in a few days and she hasn't shut the door on having another romance.
Angela and Martin talk; now that Vanessa is distracting the detective they should concentrate on Diana. She advises him to avoid his father for the moment because he's too impulsive. Martin is impressed with how well she seems to know Lorenzo. His cell phone rings and Lorenzo's number is on the screen.
After the commercial break the detective is totally taken in when a furious Federico enters. “I'm out five minutes and you get another man? You are the worst; I curse the day I met you.” He exits and Vanessa tells the hapless gumshoe that it's OK; the divorce is final in a few days. Federico stalks out past Martin and Angela, saying something like “Women, who can understand them?” As he slams the door Angela shakes Martin's hand and tells him to be careful.
Hapless Gumshoe is caressing Vanessa's bare arm as Martin sneaks up behind him with a pistol that he points to his head saying, “Now I'm going to tell you what you have to do.”
We assume it's a little later when we see Diana in her car. She's on her cell phone saying she's arrived at Martin's apartment. The man answers “Perfect. We have Victoria alone. Martin could get here any minute.” After telling her where the keys are he says “If you want to kill her, now is the moment.” She gets out and enters the dark apartment.
Ernesto is in his cell with his cronies, including Satanas who says “We're at the hour and the minute of the encounter. Is everything ready?” Ernesto responds he is unable to communicate with his people outside. A guard calls his name from offstage and the others leave. Ernesto is informed he is being transferred to a maximum security facility.
Diana walks closer to the bed, pistol in hand. Police charge out from the next room ordering her to drop the gun. Before she does Vanessa throws off the covers and gets out of the bed. “Entregate!” said a cop; “Entregete, zora!” says Vanessa as she tries to grab Diana, who grabs Vanessa by the hair saying “You'll let me out of here or I'll kill her” as Martin watches.
In Brooklyn, Cesar is with Natalia and Lorenzo. He tells them that he doesn't want parents like Elisabeth and Diego, he wants them and wishes that they were his bio-parents. Natalia tells him she loves him even though she didn't carry him. Doorbell rings and Felix comes in angry. Angela is participating in a police trap with Martin and he will blame Lorenzo if anything goes wrong.
Back in Martin's apartment Diana is dragging Vanessa to the door, left arm around her neck, gun held to her head. Martin is in front of them:
M: Diana, don't go. There are more police outside. This can be over; let go of Vanessa, por favor!”
D: You can't negotiate with the heart, Martin. I've always had men kissing the ground at my feet. [yelling] You hear me? Look at me!
M: Yes..
D: Never did you tell me..
M: Don't hurt her; let's negotiate.
D: I was in love with you from the first when your mother introduced us. She was a good woman, a big success. I love you with my whole soul [Ed. Comment: She has one?]
M: Diana, por favor, let's talk.
D [yelling gets increasingly hysterical]:The only thing you're interested in is seeing me dead in a box. You never took me to the movies or wanted to meet my family. Never took care of me when I was sick. Never told you I had an abortion and now Vickie is pregnant?
V: Vickie is pregnant?
Vanessa twists to the right, elbowing her in the midsection and grabbing her wrists. Diana yells “let go of me” and the gun goes off. Shocked faces as we break for promos for La Casa a de Lado and La Reina del Sur.
We return to see that Diana is the one who got the bullet between her prime assets. She looks at the blood and says “It doesn't matter that I'm dying. Life has funny turns, Martin Lobos. How are you going to be happy now? Watch me die; it's your punishment, Martin.” Dead. Por fin.
Vanessa takes a few steps toward Angela and asks “Is it true? Is Vickie having a baby?”
Angela nods and Martin says “Calm down, Vanessa. The nightmare is over.” Vanessa says “not yet.”
Angela replies “I have news. Ernesto has been transferred to a maximum security facility. He will have no contact with the outside. So yes, the nightmare is over.”
Venezia, Italia:
Catalina and Vickie enter a luxury hotel. Catalina asks her whether Italy was in her dreams. She says “Yes, but with Martin.” Catalina tells her all in good time. She is confident that Martin will get everything in order and he will be with you and the baby.
She forbids Vickie to call him and doesn't know how long they will be there. I still don't trust her.
Cesar visits Elisabeth in the prison and tells her he has identified his sperm donor. He hasn't told him of their relationship and Elisabeth is shocked that Cesar describes him as he does. One wonders whether she remembered him correctly. A lot happens in 28 years.
Vanessa now knows that Catalina took Vickie to Venezia and Martin proposes to go there.
Angela and Lorenzo kiss in the restaurant. Blanca comes in and calls “Papa!” in a disapproving tone. She's still a brat about this.
Vanessa seems to have finally accepted that Martin is the best thing that happened to Vickie. She's still adjusting to the idea of becoming a grandmother.
Catalina is impatient with Vickie's constant viewing of her photos of Martin on her digital camera. Room service delivers their breakfast. They receive invitations to a masked ball. Vickie doesn't want to go and tells Catalina to have a good time. Catalina tells her she makes her good.
We'll see.
Martin takes his leave of Gustavo saying he won't be back for a while because he and Vickie will have the honeymoon they never had. Gustavo reminds him that he is the son he wished he had and tells him this is the absolute truth. They do the man-hug.
Cesar and Sergio talk about Elisabeth, who is in a psychiatric hospital. Sergio asks him about his father and a few sentences later Cesar tells him that Diego is his father. Sergio is impactado.
Lorenzo tells Blanca they can't leave things “this way.” She's still being a brat, accusing him of trying to forget her mother, etc. No resolution.
I found it interesting that although Oleg is pretty sure that Teo is the mole, he doesn't tell Teresa. Instead he tells her to look inside her team. I wonder why?
I am also interested why Willie seems so upset at coming so close to capturing Teresa. He should really be jubilant that all his work has paid off.
NovelaMaven,I am ignoring Italian as it only confuses my learning Spanish. Right now I am trying to read LA REINA in Spanish. Why do you ask?
Countdown to finale: 2
In which we still don't know who will have the happy endings
Blanca continues to argue with Lorenzo about his relationship with Angela. He tells her he's not in love with Angela but likes her. Blanca is still being childish about this.
Cesar fixes hoagie sandwiches for himself and Sergio and tells him that he didn't go looking for his sperm and egg donors; it was fate that put them in his path. Sergio is happy to have a brother, as he was an only child. Martin calls Cesar to tell him goodbye for a while, as he's going to Venice. It ends with “I love you, brother.” He tells Sergio that he and Martin would give their lives for each other.
I don't like the sound of that.
Martin is taking his leave of Clara when Blanca comes in and makes a remark about loving forbidden people; apparently Vickie told her that Clara has the hots for Martin. Clara exits so Blanca and Martin can talk. He rips her a new one for being so selfish about their father's new romance, saying that “We have our lives and our children. They're both adults and do you want dad to just take care of Aurorita by himself?” She doesn't look convinced when he exits.
Clara and Angela discuss Blanca's attitude. Angela is disturbed by it.
Vickie tells Catalina she doesn't want to go out, she's going to take a nap. Catalina is impatient with her.
Cesar talks to Lorenzo about Blanca and introduces him to Sergio. Doorbell rings and it's Diego. Cesar introduces him to Lorenzo. He asks Sergio to come home because his mother is ill. Sergio agrees on one condition, that he hire Cesar back. Diego tells Lorenzo that Cesar is very talented and will make a good racer, but his temperament... Lorenzo agrees that Cesar is temperamental. This looks like a reconciliation.
Catalina almost begs Vickie to go to the masked ball with her. She will get her a Juliet costume. After talking about growing old among other old women, yadda yadda yadda, she succeeds. There is humorous Italian music in the background, so we can breathe easily.
Vickie is standing on a bridge looking out ahead, drinking in the night view of Venice. A masked man in black (no, not a Zorro costume) approaches and begins singing. It's Martin! He gets onto the bridge. Movie kiss.
Blanca is visiting Aurora's grave, Lorenzo arrives with a bouquet of flowers. Blanca lays down conditions for Lorenzo's relationship with Angela, going on about her being married, etc. Finally she tells him to explain it to her mother. He muses about having the right to be happy.
Vanessa and Federico are in Gabriel's office with the baby. Vanessa accuses Federico of stealing him: he changed the first diapers, bought him his first toys, etc. In a later conversation with Natalia she tells her the same stuff and Natalia realizes that Vanessa loves Federico.
Martin has told Vickie about how everything went down. It wasn't the ending anyone wanted, but they are now free.
Diego visits Elisabeth in the psych hospital. He asks about her life. Did she marry, have children? One disastrous marriage and no children with the husband. “But with you, yes.”
Martin and Vickie relax in the hotel.
Ernesto still has a photo of Vickie. As he kisses it he threatens to regresar.
Angela and Lorenzo get busy. Gabriel pursues Clara, but gets slapped.
Cesar and Blanca talk like an old married couple. They are taking care of Aurorita at the moment along with their twins. Gabriel arrives with Elisabeth who is now out of the psych ward on parole. Egad.
Felix walks in on Angela and Lorenzo. She tells him he knows their marriage was over long ago. I couldn't make out his exit line. She tells Lorenzo that despite taking a trip with Felix she knew their marriage was a sham. She doesn't love him and couldn't have sex with him. That she only wants with Lorenzo.
Apparently Ernesto hasn't been transferred yet because he gets a visit from Natalia who asks “Where is the Ernesto I used to know? The guy who was good, peaceful?”
E: It didn't work for me. First, you got involved with me to forget Gustavo. Second, you got pregnant by me to marry Lorenzo. That did you good. To live by his side, help with his problems. No. Tell everybody that I'm not calm and have no peace. To sleep with their eyes open because I will come back with far more hatred than before.
Cesar is on the phone with Diego about work. He's happy as he leaves. Blanca doesn't like being alone with a killer in the house.
Cesar wins a race.
Angela gets a job offer – to be a judge in D.C. Clara advises her to take it.
Vanessa is trying on a nun's habit; she accepted a role as a nun in a new novela! This is about the video, of course. She and Federico talk about their relationship and pending divorce, but they are far more likely to stay together.
Cesar and Blanca eat in a Subway fast-food place. As far as they know Diego doesn't know that he is Cesar's father and he wants to wait to tell him.
Angela brings a giant plush bear for Aurorita. Lucero seems to sense something is up.
Blanca and Cesar go home to find Diego with Sergio. They talk shop pleasantly for a minute or two before Elisabeth arrives saying “Hola, hijo!” and hugs Cesar. Diego is impactado. They talk privately. Cesar is apparently a lot like Diego was in his youth. Diego tells him he can go far as a driver, not just because he's his son, but because he's good.
In Venezia Vickie and Martin are in a club owned by Catalina, who introduces Martin as a person who writes as intensely as he loves. He takes the stage and starts by talking about Vickie, then asks her if she will marry him “under God.” She is excited and everyone applauds. A very mature gentleman in the audience appears attracted to Catalina.
Note: The finale writeup may be a little late because I will be out at a Hitchcock screening tomorrow night.
Teresa has to identify the body, not knowing if it's Patty or Lupe. It's Lupe. Willy (having hidden so Teresa doesn't see him) feels guilty, it seems the people he loves keep getting killed.
Patty is in a coma, and Flores tells Teo he'd better make sure Patty doesn't talk to Teresa before he or Willy get to her. Sure enough, when she wakes, Willy's right there, threatening her with life in prison for driving drunk and drugged, causing Veronica's death. She'd better keep quiet. She agrees, but Willy is doubtful, and so are we (knowing Patty).
Meanwhile, Teo is cornered by Juarez, who yells out that Oleg knows Juarez has been following Teo. But when Juarez jumps out, Teo shoots him without thinking, and Juarez is dead. The cops conveniently cover this all up, putting out a news release that Nino Juarez had a heart attack and died in a hotel visiting a prostitute, but I doubt this will hold up.
Back in Mexico, Ratas hires "Popeye" to assassinate Antonio, the speaker of the house, who is set to be the next President. He's giving a big speech tomorrow, and Don Epi even gives Ratas a VIP pass to be there. Popeye wants to kill the speaker and all his bodyguards, but Ratas wants a targeted hit. Knowing the risk, he promises Popeye if Popeye dies, Ratas will pay the money to his Mom (but do we believe Ratas?).
I don't know why the cops care about whether Patty outs Veronica as a cop. If she does, Teresa will think that Veronica was the leak, and would suspect Teo less. This would be good for the cops, wouldn't it?
Thanks, Hombre, excellent mini-cap, as always!
I guess he must be a good actor, because I despise Flores so much. He didn't get Teresa to blink when he got in her face about the seized drugs, which bothered him a lot.
I was surprised that Popeye (funny that Ratas pronounced his name "Popayay", but I guess it looks that way to a Spanish speaker) took the assignment from the obviously unbalanced Ratas. Also learned a new idiom: Popeye said: A quien hay que colgarle los tenis. Literally hang up his tennis shoes - figuratively bump him off. I didn't quite understand Ratas' response to Popeye's quite reasonable question: How am I going to prevent the four bodyguards from killing me after I kill De las Casas? Something about their not shooting into the crowd. But Ratas's plan is as full of holes as swiss cheese. Ratas seemed to seal the deal by questioning his manhood: ¿Tienes miedo a la calaca? This refers to the Mexican feminine image of death as a well dressed skeleton.
Flores mimicked Don Vito Corleone telling his loyal assistant (forgot his name) that he was going to offer Patty something she would not be able to refuse.
I feel that Flores' plan to arrange a heart attack with a prostitute was his revenge on Nino Juárez for the backfiring of his plan to finish him off that ended in Juárez with a big chunk of change and a reduced sentence. I liked what Teo said to him when he heard this. ¿Y ustedes me acusan de delincuente?
Willy obviously is not as cold as he's tried to be so far. He genuinely grieved Vero's death and blamed himself (rightly so). Also, he told Patty that Vero had been ready to quit the assignment because she'd fallen in love.
Loved the spanish expressions you transcribed, Novelera. Concerning the pronounciation of Popeye, you remember the character in El Cuerpo del Deseo named Abigail? Spanish is almost perfectly phonetic so it was pronounced:
Ah be guy EEL.
Not only does Ratas' plan seem weak, he is so careless and wacko that he has probably left evidence of his dealing with Popeye that would lead the police to Don Epifanio's nephew/son and implicate DE in the assassination/attempt.
Too bad for Veronica/Guadalupe but her demise was predictable.(Two novelas for that actress and dead before the finale in both of them.) In fact, it was clearly a more elaborated version of the unnamed woman in the book who is killed in a car accident that Patty has.
You're right, Hombre. I hadn't really thought it through, but having Patty tell Teresa that Vero was the mole would make Teo's position stronger. Maybe the cops didn't think it through either. Or maybe they just want Teresa to continue to think her operation is water tight. They don't know that Oleg is flashing warning signals to her that there's a leak.
Like all of you, even Willy said it, I don't know what Teresa sees in Teo. She's going to be responsible of her own down fall. Teo cheated on his wife with every woman he could, even with Patty. Teresa knows that. What makes he think she so special? I think the cops don't that Patty doesn't know Teo is "el topo." that's why they are so worried.
Yes, Jean, I do remember Abigail, the housekeeper. It just sounds so strange to our ears when a word we've always heard a certain way is pronounced completely differently. Italian does the same thing with Abigail. In Verdi's opera Nabucco a major character is Abigaille, which is pronounced much like the Spanish pronounce it.
yes, Telemundo just loves their product placement - Subway.
only 2more episodes, and yet there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.
Nice job, Hombre!
Sue -- Welcome to the conversation!
I think the police are anxious to hear what Patty says when she regains consciousness because they don't know how much she knows. She told Willy and Verónica: "I know everything." But they don't know for sure if that includes Teo's role as infiltrator. And the cops still need Teo. True, they were able to cut into Transer Naga's profits. But they still don't have enough to arrest Teresa -- or anyone else in her organization.
When Nino Juarez confronted Teo, he tried to extort "millions" for keeping his mouth shut. Maybe Juarez, rat that he always was, figured it was time to jump off the sinking Transer Naga ship. But he didn't count on drowning.
NovelaMaven, thanks for bringing up Juárez asking Teo for money. I had forgotten about that, but I remember being conflicted about his motives. As I watched, I wasn't sure if he really was going to strike a deal with Teo or wanted to draw him out of hiding to shoot or capture him.
So now im outed as an Italian speaker. When I was recently in Mexico I was conversing with a cop who asked when I was going to Teotihuacan. I said "domani," I didn't even remember Manana. the cop actually said "domani is italian." I really have a terrible time speaking Spanish, but the Italian has really helped my understanding. In the end, I probably won't be able to speak either language.
I got the feeling that Juarez was using the money thing as a survival technique, not that he really meant it. I actually felt sorry that he died. It's amazing how we've come to change our feelings about some of the characters since the beginning...Juarez, Willy,Pote, Patti.
I don't understand whyFlores and Willy don't have enough on Teresa yet. They have Teo's documents, as well as his input. What more do they need? I wouldn't be surprised if somehow Willy turns...
Novelera and NJ Sue, I also wondered whether Juarez was playing for time with Teo but then I realized there was no reason for him to engage Teo at all, no reason to tip his hand by confronting him. He just had to whisper in Oleg's ear as he had been doing all along. The fact that he challenged Teo directly showed he was trying to change the rules of play. The only team Nino Juarez ever played for -- and ultimately died for -- was Team Juarez.
For which the writers have serious explaining to do.
Martin and Vickie marry in a gorgeous church, but where is her white dress? The ceremony is in Italian.
Lorenzo arrives at Angela's house with Aurorita only to have Clara tell him she accepted the position in DC. She left a letter for him saying she needed to get away because he couldn't commit. He leaves and we see that Angela was just hiding.
We FF 8 months and Lorenzo tells Natalia he's written to Angela 5 times and the letters have all been returned.
Vickie is almost at her due date. Blanca calls her to explain she's divorcing Cesar. She can't handle the car obsession and the fact that his hands are never clean. Martin tries to talk to Blanca, but she's not having it. Vickie has a contraction, but it seems to be a false alarm.
Lorenzo visits Angela's office and Clara hands him a letter.
Cesar is racing; Blanca, Natalia, Martin, and Vickie are in the stands. Cesar wins, Sergio brings out a double magnum of champagne, Blanca goes down to the track for the photo op, Vickie's labor begins. Somewhere above a black-clad helmeted individual is watching them.
Lorenzo leaves Aurorita with Clara and goes to DC where he sits in Angela's courtroom until the verdict is read. Reunion after the courtroom clears.
Vickie and Martin are in the delivery room with a female OB. Blanca and Cesar are in the waiting room where she wakes up from a doze. She panics because she had a nightmare the producers didn't share with us.
Back in the delivery room; it's a boy! A montage of photos with Vanessa, Federico, Arturo, Cesar, and Blanca.
FF two months...
Martin tells Vickie that the past two months have been the happiest time in his life. Tomorrow will be Vickie's operation to fix her face. She asks him what happened to Ernesto and he tells her that Ernesto died.
However, he didn't. He also appears to have busted out of the prison along with Satanas. They discuss Satanas' knowledge of electricity and that tomorrow will be the day. “You are a real friend, not like Lorenzo. The Lobos men are a curse.” They shake hands. Ernesto no longer wears the head bandage; he looks rather bad.
Lorenzo and Angela decide to live together.
It's the next day and Vickie is prepped for surgery. Martin is in the operating room. It looks like Elisabeth is about to operate. Vanessa and Federico are in the waiting room. Ernesto and Satanas are in a stairwell or the basement. He makes a comment about how his alleged death has made them drop their vigilance. Vanessa is getting apprehensive and Federico embraces her. Cesar and Blanca are there with them.
The lights go out, first in the corridor and then in the OR. There is a brief moment of panic when the doctors fear that the equipment isn't working. Ernesto and Satanas escape to their car. Angela and Lorenzo have just arrived and she recognizes Satanas. Lorenzo asks her to get out of the car and get upstairs. He follows, but loses them.
Vickie's bandage is removed. We're not shown her reflection, but Martin smiles.
After the commercial break, Elisabeth applies some cream and Vickie looks like new, everyone is happy. When they're alone Martin and Vickie talk about a new beginning.
Cesar and Elisabeth talk in the cafeteria. She actually sounds like a normal person. She finally says something about having to ask one more person's forgiveness.
Angela breaks relationship news to Clara. When Clara leaves, there is a knock on the door. Angela opens it, thinking Clara forgot something and Satanas walks in with a pistol. “I've had to kill you for many years and this time I won't fail. Where there should be a heart there is probably a stone.” Elisabeth is behind him.
After the commercial break Satanas tells Angela she's about to die, Elisabeth breaks a vase or something on him, Lorenzo charges in and beats him into unconsciousness. The police come in behind him and drag Satanas out. Elisabeth tells Angela that she was shocked to hear that she had Aurora's heart because she always thought that Aurora was the source of her own disgrace. However, she now knows that everyone writes their own destiny. She now wants to pay her debts and start from zero.
Somebody remind me how many deaths she's responsible for.
Martin and Vickie talk about moving into his grandfather's mansion. She is ready to return to her real career but doesn't want to lose any time with Martin. Her cell phone rings and it's Clara, who tells her that now that she's cured she needs to know that Martin stayed with her out of pity. She and Martin are lovers and it's time she knew that. She asks to speak to Martin. Vickie hands him the phone and says “It's your lover.”
We see that Clara is at the end of a pistol held by the masked Ernesto, who must have hung up the phone.
Martin denies having a lover and fears that Vickie doesn't believe him. She does but can't figure out who could be doing this since Ernesto is dead.
Ernesto ties Clara's hands behind the chair, telling her not to try anything and nothing will happen to her. She asks who he is and he laughs why he made her make that call. He says something about nobody else knows how to live (?). He steals some cash off the desk and splits.
Cesar turns down a job offer to stay with Diego and Sergio. They all seem happy at this.
Angela brings Lorenzo breakfast in bed and he says Aurora's name in his sleep. He wakes up and explains that he dreamt Aurora told him that she's happy he found someone. Angela's phone rings and it's Gabriel, who must have found Clara in the office.
After the commercial break, Clara apologises to Martin for the call but she was forced. She has no idea who did this because she couldn't see his face. They speculate on who it could be since Satanas has been arrested and Ernesto is dead.
In the jail Angela makes Satanas talk. When he speaks of Ernesto in the present tense, she presses and he admits that Ernesto is alive.
Martin and Vickie are at an amusement park with the baby. Vickie gets on the carousel with the baby and holds him on a horse's saddle (Why do people do this?) The carousel goes around; Vickie waves to Martin on the first two passes. Ominous music begins as the third pass happens in slo-mo and the horse is unoccupied. Martin jumps on the carousel and walks through it as it moves, looking for Vickie. His phone rings. It's Lorenzo telling him that Ernesto is alive.
Martin asks the carousel operator if he's seen Vickie and Martincito. I don't like the looks of this guy. We next see him with Cesar, Blanca, and Lorenzo (how did he get there that fast?). Martin's phone rings and it's Ernesto who says “Now isn't the time for you to talk, but for me to. And for you to hear the sounds of death.”
He aims a high powered pistol at Martincito as Vickie screams “No, Ernesto, don't!”
Ominous music with loud percussion that sounds like gunshots.
Teresa visits Patty in the hospital. Patty says if you take me home now, I have something important to tell you. Teresa does take her home. Patty tells her 1) you know Teo sleeps with other women, right? 2) Lupe was Veronica Cortes, DEA agent, but I just found out 3) Yes I drove the car off the cliff on purpose, to punish myself, but Lupe died instead of me. Teresa lies down with her, comforts her, kisses her, forgives her. Teresa feels that she (Teresa) never chose her destiny, she was just pushed into it. Patty just wants to sleep. Later, Teresa finds Patty dead in the bathtub, having slit her wrists. Rest in peace, Patty.
Oleg is suspicious about Juarez's death. He has his guys dig up the body, and sure enough, no heart attack - there's a bullet hole in Nino's chest.
In Mexico, Ratas is smarter than we thought. Popeye makes his way through the crowd, gets close to Antonio de las Casas, shoots him in the head (we're not sure if he's dead, but he's close), and Ratas whirls, pulls out his gun, and kills Popeye! He's a hero! I'm not sure if Don Epi will believe this, but in the meantime, the President has called Don Epi, who is apparently now going to get the job.
Teo is Teo. He, Flores and Willy don't know how much Patty told Teresa. Willy is sure he was mentioned (he wasn't), and toys with leaving Spain (but doesn't). Teo is pretty sure he was mentioned (not really), and goes to "comfort" Teresa. But he bugs her over and over with, "Just what did Patty say?" and "Did she mention Lupe?". Teresa is getting a little suspicious of Teo. On the one hand, he's been acting weird. But it does seem that Lupe was the mole, not Teo or Patty. Of course, Teresa hasn't talked to Oleg yet, and Oleg definitely suspects Teo.
I'll admit it. I was in tears last night, both during the scene where Patty and Teresa talk about their relationship and when Teresa got into the tub with Patty's body.
The scene with the two of them was, as always between these two good actors, just riveting. Patty says, regarding Teresa getting her out of the hospital: Eres mí cuata again playing with mexicanisms. Patty: A veces la vida se desquita concediendote lo que deseas, referring to the fact that the "treasure" she and Teresa located in the cave led to her own bad behavior.
So very sad.
I was also somewhat impressed with Ratas' cleverness in doing away with the assassin who could connect him with the plot and making himself into a hero simultanously.
Boy, Teo is digging himself a deep hole obeying the orders of Flores. Again, Flores is not as smart as he thinks he is. As Hombre noted, the outing of Lupe/Veronica only makes Teo's position more secure. But, when Flores insists he question Teresa, he risks losing his own chess piece. Teresa's antennas are up!
One more thing, and it seemed so natural and that it had suddenly occurred to Teresa. She didn't take the time (I thought she said; I would have said I forgot) to tell Patty that she was pregnant. When you lose someone you love, you always regret things you should have done or should have told them, or should have called more often.
Hombre and Novelera, I loved your comments on last night's show. I was also very moved by the Kate/Cristina scenes -- so gorgeously written and acted.
I was surprised the police were sloppy enough to leave Juarez's body intact -- I would have expected them to cover their lies by cremating him (no matter what the grieving widow wanted).
And in Mexico, Epifanio is now the party's presidential candidate. Yikes. He has to know that Ratas was behind the shooting of De las Casas. Is he going to give the word to Batman to solve the Ratas problem? Because the more prominent Epifanio becomes, the more Ratas becomes a liability. Or will we have to endure the pestilential Ratas right up to the bitter end of the novela?
Thanks very much, Hombre, Novelera, and NovelaMaven, for your summaries and remarks about last night's episodio. The episode was so packed with important happenings that I sat down at the computer to try to write about it last night, but by the time I did so it was after midnight and....zzzzzz.
Special thanks to Novelera for including several Spanish expressions that went by too quickly for me even to write down.
The three of you have made just about all the points I would have made, and a lot more! One thing I found interesting that you didn't mention was that when Willy told Flores he was returning to Mexico, Flores asked him whether he could really bring himself to leave this case, and, after pausing, Willy admitted that no, he couldn't. He gets more interesting by the day. I've almost totally forgotten about his being The Chump on "El Clon."
And anyone who wants an illustration of the expression "if looks could kill," should just watch Teresa's expression in the final scene with Teo.
why was polita all white? did they take her for dead and cover her in lime, or was it because she was hungry and got into the flour? i couldn't tell what her response was.
it was kind of a surprise that alejo was informed of the truth about the letters. did his parents hear that she had actually died from the plague?
yay for narino and his vaccines!
-mai tai
I think Don Epi knew what Ratas was up to when he gave him the pass to be close to the candidate. Patty was a true friend. She preferred to die before betraying Teresa. Probably was a human reaction, but I think Teresa was too harsh with Patty when Teresa told Patty she was sick and tired of her. Patty was a very low point in her life and Teresa dough the hole deeper. Flores is an arrogant idiot. I don't know how Teresa doesn't see how desperate Teo is for information. First he tries to blame Patty for the leak, then he tries to deflect Oleg's suspicion by telling Teresa that Oleg is jealous and now he wants to know what Patty said about Vero. On a side note... Is it healthy for Tere to be drinking tequila like a fish while she's pregnant?
Hi mai tai,
"Why was Pola all white?"
She said she was dying of hunger and grabbed a banana; when she did that, the flour fell down on her and she got covered in it.
Did Alejo's parents hear that la Pola had died of smallpox?
They heard of the family's illness and assumed she had died:
When they got to Domingo's house in Guaduas, he had just received the letter from Santa Fe saying that Pola's family was sick. All of them -- Alejo's parents and Domingo -- assumed that in the time it took for the letter to arrive, the whole family must have died.
