Triunfo del Amor #103 5/3/11 A Night of Miracles and Madness; and the Blast was from the Past.

Reprise:
Padre Juan Pablo warns Bernarda that if she won’t tell María Desamparada the truth, he will oblige someone else to come forward – someone who knows all about Bernarda’s crimes. And Bernarda will spend the rest of her life in prison. Padre Jerónimo appears at the door at that very moment and Bernarda fixes him with a look of intense hatred.

Tonight – What a night!
Back in the familiar hospital waiting room where the Sandoval clan have wept over Fer and little Osvaldo and fretted over Linda and Ximena, they are now huddled in misery while Osvaldo's fate hangs in the balance.

The doctors have bad news for the family. Hemorrhagic shock has left his heart severely damaged. He is in intensive care but his survival is uncertain. Only the closest family members can see him – Fer, Max… Victoria steps forward. I’m his wife, she says.

In the vecindad, Alonso fawns and comforts and blathers to his ‘ternura’ and tells her to look on the bright side of PJP’s revelation. She did get what she most wanted – now she knows who her parents are. María corrects him: JP refused to tell her who her mother is.

Osvaldo’s condition has worsened. The doctors appear with a tragic announcement: El señor Sandoval is dying. The family can go in to say their goodbyes.

Nati is with María and little Juan Pablo in the vecindad. María has just declared that she never wants to see PJP again – not him or his mother (and his little dog too, if he had one!) when a knock sounds at the door. It’s doña Bernarda! Aren’t you going to hug your grandma? she asks pleasantly, if delusionally.

La familia Sandoval – Max, Fer and Victoria – gather at Osvaldo’s bedside. A monitor alarm sounds. Sufrió un infarto! (He had a heart attack!) The medical team calls for a crash cart and as the horrified family huddles in a corner of the room and watches, the doctor shocks Os again and again and again. But Osvaldo doesn’t respond and the line on the monitor is flat. The doctor speaks the words they have been dreading:
El sr Sandoval acaba de fallecer. (Mr. Sandoval has just died.)

Victoria calls his name over and over: You can’t leave me with this terrible guilt, she says. She takes his hand, kisses his brow and then steps back to allow Fer and Max say their farewells.

Back in the barrio, Nati takes the baby into the bedroom so María and the Demented One can talk. María isn’t intimidated or overwhelmed by Bernarda anymore and she gives it to her between the eyes. You may be my father’s mother, says María, and you may be my son’s godmother (though the CarayCaray theologians are disputing this point!), but by withholding the truth about my parents, you gave up your right to be a grandmother. You knew your son seduced my mother!

To the contrary, rants Demente. It was your whoring mother who seduced my son. He was a pure soul until she dragged him into her abyss of fornication!

Cállate, says María, but Demente is on a roll and won’t shut up. María’s mother was a sinner, María is the fruit of sin and is herself a sinner. QED.

¡No! ¡No! ¡No! ¡No es cierto! cries María angrily.

And in the hospital, the doctor draws the sheet over Osvaldo’s face.

But wait…something is happening here… Osvaldo is knocking on heaven’s door…

We see a tranquil white-shirted Osvaldo in a field of white clouds. We hear a baby crying. And then Osvaldo’s voice: ¡mis nietos!

Now there are images of Max and Fer and we hear Osvaldo again: My children need me!

There is Victoria’s image too and she is begging him not to die, not to leave her alone.

Finally we hear Osvaldo himself pleading with God to let him see his family – his children, Victoria, his grandchildren. Then comes his joyful shout: Gracias Dios!

He gasps and sits up throwing the sheet off his face and asks his family: Why are you crying? They tell him: You were dead!

He explains to them: The children brought him back to life!

Celestial reprieves notwithstanding, there’s still plenty of evil afoot. And now we’re back on the dark side. We see Osvaldo’s black camioneta pull up to Guillermo’s retreat. A knock at the door pulls him away from his cognac and his Beethoven. He starts to open the door, then quickly tries to close it again. But his visitor pushes hard enough to enter and knock him down. Leonela! he says in astonishment.

Osvaldo describes his near-death experience, how he felt he was in a tunnel, hearing celestial music and was moving towards a light, longing to reach the light. And then the music was mixed with an infant’s cry – his grandsons! And he knew he still had a mission on earth – to look out for them. He couldn’t leave his family alone in their moment of need.

The family reminisces about Os’s travels with the children when Victoria was busy building her company. They laugh over how independent Fer was and how she was in a hurry to grow up. And look how I ended up, says Fer ruefully. But Victoria reminds her to count her blessings.

Meanwhile Guillermo is struggling to understand Leonela’s apparent resurrection. He bought Osvaldo’s story that the couple had gone away on vacation in the midst of a marital crisis. And she had died. Leonela corrects the record: Osvaldo found out she had a lover – not her first! --. She ended up murdering the lover and was sentenced to life in prison. Osvaldo did his best to free her but he was unsuccessful.

Recently, her new lawyer got the case reopened and they were able to convince a judge that she had acted in self-defense. And that, combined with her ‘good behavior’ and her putting on an act of a suffering mother longing to be reunited with her son got her a Get Out of Jail Free card.

She tells Gui: The only thing that kept her alive all this time was her desire for revenge.

She hasn’t seen Max yet. As for Osvaldo – here Leonela laughs and pulls out her gun and aims it at Gui’s face – Yo misma le disparé! (I shot him myself!)

Back at the hospital, Osvaldo tells Victoria he turned down a chance to make a film in Europe – a chance he would have jumped at in the past – because now his family comes first. He wants to repair the harm he has done, and help Vic rebuild Casa Victoria. And he hopes to regain her love and ultimately, her forgiveness. They clasp hands and Vic’s face softens but she says nothing.

Out in the waiting room, Max spreads the good news. Oscar, with a little nudge from Pip, leaves for dinner with Toni; Fer’s galanes will take her home. Max will stay with his father.

Padre Hottie is in church with María’s painful rejection still echoing in his head. He is surprised when Victoria enters. He notices her face is tear-stained but when he asks what is wrong, she brushes off the question. She picks up The Crucifix That Burns Those Beyond Redemption and it brings back a flood of memories. (It doesn’t burn her though, so for all her flaws, she hasn’t passed to the dark side. Yet.) You were such a good man back then, so sweet, so kind, so understanding – that’s why I hated you so much when I thought you had repudiated me and the child I was carrying – your daughter! When I believed your mother’s lies!

Sadly, JP’s mother is still on the loose and still causing harm. Right now she is in full rant mode: María is a sinner who gave herself to Max without the benefit of marriage, had a child out of wedlock and now is a single mother. (This, of course, is Demente’s own story – except that María didn’t try to incinerate Max, Ximena and Osvaldito and then marry Alonso to give her son a name.)

María tries to defend herself but Demente isn’t listening. She just keeps spewing: You haven’t behaved like a decent Christian woman! You have no right to that child! So I’m taking him right now!

María blocks the door to the bedroom with her body. (And I for one am glad to know that Nati and her pugilistic skills are behind that door with little Juan Pablo!)

Meanwhile Padre Hottie and Victoria continue their aggravating conversation. She bemoans the fact that her prayer to be reunited with her daughter hasn’t been answered. He replies cryptically that he lost a daughter too, maybe twice. Victoria doesn’t know what he’s talking about – he’s always so mysterious.

By the way, she says, I see that María Desamparada rejected you. Now you can understand what an ingrate that girl really is! He wonders how much she really knows about MD. Enough, says Vic. Enough not to be wrong in my judgment of her. That’s why I tried to buy her child.

Whoa! PJP is taken aback. But Vic continues as if bidding for babies were the most normal thing in the world. After all, Bernie did the same thing – she tried to buy little María years ago. (And Bernie, of course, is someone to emulate, right?)

PJP, who specializes in trying to reason with the unreasonable, says: If my mother’s behavior is so horrifying to you, maybe you should reflect on your own behavior; and maybe you should learn how to forgive.

Victoria sets down the crucifix. Forgiveness doesn’t come easily, she admits. She still hasn’t forgiven Osvaldo even though he’s in the hospital.

This is news to JP. Vic tells him about the shooting – they were after the car, it seems. And that’s why she came to see JP: For some reason, Osvaldo wants to talk to him.

Fausto spots el Alacrán lurking outside María’s place. El Alacrán tells him that the boss lady, doña Bernarda, is inside and tries to shoo him away. But Fausto is steadfast. He’s there to protect María.

Inside, Demente rants on. With Little Juan Pablo it’s as if God has given her another chance – a chance to make up for (resarcir) the sin her son committed because of María’s mother. I won’t permit you to take my son, declares María stoutly. No one’s asking permission, retorts Demente. You aren’t prepared to give him what he needs and to raise him properly.

She will raise her son with love, counters María, and with the freedom to choose his path in life. He’ll have the chance at happiness that Demente herself denied to MD.

Demente puts on her self-justifying face – it’s just that her feelings were confused… if only your mother hadn’t seduced my son…but you’re so much like me:
You are the only one who deserves to bear my name!

Forget the kayak. Cue the garbage scow and load it up with Demente, Leonela, Ximena, Roxana, Guillermo, Alacrán, and Padilla. And just to be on the safe side, set out a leaky canoe for Alonso and Victoria.

What is there to say about this epsiode? NM, you did a stellar job making it seem all somewhat logical, but what a carnival ride.

I'm sorry, but that whole LONG hospital scene: first the doctor in all his "clear" mode had me cracking up. He took his moment of drama and really ran with it, didn't he? Then the Oz in the afterlife, okey doke, little cheesy, but I'll buy it. Interesting that with all the "death's door" going on, there was no padre of any kind on the scene. Not sure what that struck me, but it did. So kudos to Oz to take care of all needs heavenly himself.

I do love the idea he said the children brought him back. Yeah, direct dig to her highness Sic Vic there...

Speaking of her highness...what is this woman's problem? I thought this would be her "wake-up" moment to realize what she almost lost and turn her attitudes around - but NOOOOO. I have officially given up on her.

Not sure what the heck is happening with the new Gal in town - except it throws a wrench into Max's life, and messes up his realationship with Oz? We honestly had such a mess going on, didn't really need this new plot line...oh well.

Burnie, Burnie. Those poor little boys - they are really making the rounds and staying so sweet and smiley. So will she be successful with her snatch and grab? How does she think she'll get away with it? Not like she's leaving town...the mind reels.

I want PJP to reunite with Maria and fast, and let Victoria fall off the face of the earth. Then I'll get my happy=ever-after. Those two innocents need to get out of Dodge, with little JP....and they can buy a little dog too!

NovelaMaven, great work and excellent title. I watched this online first and couldn't wait to comment.

My one disappointment with this episode is that the scene with JP, Padre J and La Dementa didn't continue. Perhaps they will do something with Padre Jeronimo tonight.

Love "the Caray Caray theologians are disputing this point!" I hope the writers didn't drop the ball on this. There needs to be a scene with the two padres discussing this matter and Bernarda's blasphemous declaration about being appointed by God, etc. JP can't shove that one in the back of his mind for more than a few episodes.

Brava to Maria for recognizing Dona Dementa's role in this situation (despite not having all the facts). I don't remember what got blipped out of Maria's statement about single mothers, but it's on the online video.

Which is much brighter than Univision's transmission.

I totally expected Dona Dementa to do this; in EPDA this is when Christina found out who her father was. She reacted exactly the same way.

Don't we have a great collection of sociopaths in this tale! Dona Dementa, Ximena, Guillermo, and now Leonela. I suspect that in her way she is more dangerous than Dona Dementa because she can conceal her crazy better. That's scaring even Guillermo, who looked like he just met Satan when she made her entrance. My gut is telling me that Max means about as much to her as Osvaldito means to Ximeana.

Osvaldo is overdue to disclose this to Victoria, whose life is now also in danger. JP needs to be very persuasive tonight.

The near-death experience must be a favorite of Mejia's, as it was so similar to Padre Tadeo's in FELS.

The cross only burned Dona Dementa; Victoria will redeem herself eventually.

NovelaMaven: This was wonderful. My favorites were the title and "Celestial reprieves notwithstanding". Excellent!

I liked Os's return from the brink of death. As Daisy noted, it was a little cheesy but it worked for me. I love how the doctors stood around during the "death" and "revival". They must have few patients to attend to!

Thanks again for the terrific summary.

Diana

Thank you, Novela Maven , for that excellent as always recap. Wow. Os is one tough hombre. I wonder what Dr. Carlos would think of that return from the dead scenario. Poor Os..on top of everything else. his crazy first wife shows up and shoots him. And as for Vicky, time to try a little forgiveness. You cried when you thought the guy was dead. You have a second chance now to change your path, so let go of that bitterness and appreciate at all your blessings. You've wasted too much time already. Tick tock.

NovelaMaven,
Many thanks. Great recap.

I just loved Os' return from the dead. For a second I thought maybe he wouldn't be back!

Poor Fer -- my favorite character after starting out as my least favorite. That says something, I guess, about her acting or the story itself.

Don't recognize Leonela from other novelas. Anyone know the actress?

NovelaMaven - Thank you! Great title, great snark, great recap.

UA - I was thinking Padre Tad from FELS also had the similar experience. Must be a Meh-jía signature.

NovelaMaven: Great recap. Thank you.

As if this novela needed another crazy character! So now we have Bernarda, Ximena, Guillermo and Leonela. Has Alacran killed anybody - what about Padilla?

Then there are assassins-in-waiting, i.e., Fausto and Auntie.

This is a virtual battallion of baddies (although I kind of like Fausto).

Traveling Lady: de acuerdo on Fer. I couldn't stand her at first, but now she has redeemed herself and is tolerable.

Thanks again NvMv: de cabo a rabo you nailed it. Others have already pointed out your bright literary moments; let me just add: "And I for one am glad to know that Nati and her pugilistic skills are behind that door with little Juan Pablo!)" We know this gal can take care of herself and her team (we hope).

And what's with Victoria; she blew her chance to forgive a relatively innocent indiscretion by a guy who's single-handedly held her family together for twenty-some years, at the same time saying: "You can’t leave me with this terrible guilt" A-a-a-a_g-g-g-h-h-h!!! It's The All About Vicki Show. That woman is insufferable.

I cracked up when the credits rolled over the kayak, I saw "Beethoven, Ludwig van" Strange way to list one of the greatest names in history.

Victoria finding out about Leonela probably won't make anything better on that front. She might ultimately understand Osvaldo's motive for keeping quiet but (of course) nobody would have anticipated her getting out of el carcel.

Leonela is going down. I'm guessing that Guillermo will kill her, possibly in self defense.

After seeing Leonela, I suddenly understand why Oswaldo fell for Vicky and married her so quickly. That woman is demonic; she and Xi and Gui are all cut from the same cloth. But it's a different cloth from our other demon, La Doña Dementa

LOL @ Osvaldo's death scene. Why were Max, Fer and Vicky allowed to be in the room while they were giving Os "the juice?"

The doctor was extra super dramatic.

If I were Maria, I'd pack the $%^$ up and move away, with or without Alonso. You've got one woman trying to buy the baby and another threatening to take the baby.

So I guess Leonela did kill her lover.

things are about to get really crazy, max thinks his mom is dead, well he's about to get a big surprise and that poor old priest i think bernie is going to kill him before he can talk. thank you for all the recapping

I don't see Fausto as a "bad" character. The only person he wants to harm is Burnie. He lost his parents and was disfigured for life because of his dad's affair and Burnie's revenge. His own aunt has told him nobody will want or love him. The residents of the vecindad taunted him b/c of his face. Yet he still doesn't hate anyone except Burnie and IMO most of that was fed by Eva. The good characters (Maria, Max, Big JP) have no problem with him.

Now Eva's supposed to be plotting this revenge on Burnie, when is she going to get to it?

The person who knows ALL of Burnie's crimenes is Fausto, not Padre Jeronimo. Does Padre JP know about Tomasa and Sor Clementina?

Great summary of an episode with many "special moments". Thanks anon207 for the cheat sheet

I forget who Isreal is? Anyone?

Poor baby JP. He literally has genes from Hell.

NM once again thanks for a great recap. Others have mentioned your wonderful prose. I particularly your assessment of Vic and the cross (It doesn’t burn her though, so for all her flaws, she hasn’t passed to the dark side. Yet.) Brilliant.

I'm glad others share my concern with yet another sociopath on this show with the addition of Leonela. It will make for quite a body count in the end.

Loved Os's near death (go back to the light) experience.

Israel is the firefighter who died and left a pregnant wife.

NM, that was fabulous. Just fabulous. Wonderful snarky analysis and graceful transitions from scene to scene.

Oz' near-death experience and his return to life was such an uber-cheesey delight. Plus the dr. increasing the power to maximum as he tried to shock Oz back to life. That whole scene made my evening.

"Forget the kayak. Cue the garbage scow and load it up with Demente, Leonela, Ximena, Roxana, Guillermo, Alacrán, and Padilla. And just to be on the safe side, set out a leaky canoe for Alonso and Victoria." Yup. That's it.
La Paloma

Anonymous (11:19AM), Padre Jeronimo does know all of La Dementa's crimes because she "confessed" them and then refused to repent. This is exactly what her excommunication was about, in addition to her blasphemy.

Fausto may not know about Octavio and if he and Eva knew about her attempt on little Maria's life almost 20 years ago that resulted in Victoria's injuries, Eva would have told Victoria long ago.

There was no eyewitness to the murder of Octavio, but Tomasa might have been suspicious.

Monica Ayos (Leonela) is from Argentina and is married to Diego Olivera. I think this is her first Televisa role; the other stuff on her IMDB page doesn't sound at all familiar.

One more thought about yesterday's episode: JP didn't tell Maria that Victoria is her mother because he wants the two of them to bury the hatchet first. Which he prays for constantly (in vain, I'm sure).

Thanks UA - I've seen pictures of Diego's wedding, but did not recognize it was the same woman. Wow.

I love your "bury the hatchet". Vic would bury it right in Maria's skull right now if she could.

Oh, yes, and now for the bleedin' obvious (to quote Basil Fawlty):

When JP told Victoria that he lost his daughter twice her next comment was about Maria's rejection. She also knows that his sabbatical from his vows was to take care of her. She can't solve this equation?

Leonela looks awfully young to be Max's mother. Far from the 1st time a TN character is egregiously miscast as to age, of course...

Thanks so much, folks! I'm glad you're enjoying the recap.

This may be the craziest episode so far. And for me the craziest scene within it was the conversation between Victoria and JP. That the writers create what they surely think is a "transcendental" experience for Osvaldo and his family and then show Victoria a short while later completely unchanged, still clinging to her petty grievances -- well, it is mind-boggling!

I'm also puzzled by Leonela's thirst for vengeance -- she is hardly the injured party! But hey, who am I to question the logic of sociopaths and telenovelas?

And yeah, anon 2:47, the actress playing Leonela looks too young to be Max's mother, but in this novela, the age-discordant ship sailed long ago! I just believe what they tell me!

One of the reasons I stopped watching US soaps is because of the accelerated childhoods of babies and the fact that the corresponding adult relatives didn't age at all. Leonela could be 45 in theory, if Max is 25. Osvaldo Rios actually is 50 off-camera.

As for what her revenge is about I am going to guess it's career envy.

Thank you Novella Maven for an amazing recap start to finish. I loved your title : "The Blast was from the Past"! Genius!

I know I realized how much I loved Oz once we lost him; Why doesn't Vic feel the same way???! And Oz, what are you thinking, asking Vic for a fresh start when you know full well the skeleton in your closet just shot you and is running around town in your car!!? (which seems a little unbelievable--isn't that crime scene 101--ditch the car?). How does he think Vic won't find out and bust him all over again?

Poor Max, it's not enough he loses his firstborn and gets in
a fight with his girlfriend. His crazy mom comes back from the dead and tries to murder his Dad!

Pip, Toni and Oscar are saints. How many supportive trips to the hospital have they made!?

Katy

Thanks for the great recap. Keep the good work. I enjoy reading the recaps even though I don't comment at times.

Another crazy sociopath has join the unfortunates who are bend on revenage and destruction. Poor all the would-be victims who suffer at their hands.

Hoorary and Praise for Fausto, our hero, that come to rescue.

Genevieve

Leonela looks awfully young to be Max's mother. Far from the 1st time a TN character is egregiously miscast as to age, of course...

---------------------

Fausto should be at least 47 years old, if they were being true to ages.

Leave it to our UA to come up with the plausible explanation: "As for what her revenge is about I am going to guess it's career envy." My beanie has been on so tight due to the barrage of complete improbabilities that I missed the obvious. She did say she was an actriz, did she not? Thanks

NOvela-Maven: I loved your last paragraph, not to mention the terrific title! LOL! Thanks again for making a really boring 60min. enjoyable.

Thanks NovelaMaven! Great stuff!

Bidding on babies=classic!
